FISHERS FALCONS YOUTH TRAVEL BASEBALL TEAM RAISES MONEY FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Todd Zimmerman, founder of the Fishers Falcons Youth Travel Baseball Team, says his team not only does great work on the baseball fields, but they also help the community. “We (the coaches and parents) are extraordinarily excited about the team each year,” Zimmerman says. “Youth sports is a passion for most of us, and aside from raising kids that grow up with a love for baseball, we hope to be able to instill values of community, good sportsmanship and passion into our children.” Zimmerman stressed that “time is spent at practices and games discussing with the kids about how the names on the front and back of their jerseys represent for
whom we are playing. The name on the front is your community, and the name on the back is your family, and you have to represent them both proudly and in a way they would be proud of.” That is also reflected in the Fishers Falcons Team’s colors, which match the Fishers flag. The goal for the Falcons was to have a motto of “great kids, great families.” “Too often you hear stories of people misbehaving at youth sports games, from poor sportsmanship to yelling at players, coaches and umpires,” Zimmerman says. “We pride ourselves on having good families and kids and work on teaching integrity and sportsmanship. Kindness and inclusion are our goals in addition to playing competitive, strong baseball based on sound fundamentals.” atFishers.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 7
Most of the kids on the teams have played together for several years, and some of the coaches have coached kids on multiple teams. “It really brings an aspect of family and community,” Zimmerman says. “I, for instance, coached most of the kids on the 13U (13 years and under) team with my older son, and it’s a treat to see the young men they’re growing into after having coached them over several years in various sports.” Helping the Community The Fishers Falcons’ commitment to helping the community has also grown this year. “We have an opportunity to represent our community in other communities (as we travel to different towns in the area and even out of state), and we thought being a visible
part of that community is important,” Zimmerman says. “So we pledged we would spend time helping others in small ways, whether it’s visiting a retirement community to speak to the people who live there and do crafts and games, helping people in need in some small way, or just cleaning up a park or baseball field.” This year, the Fishers Falcons donated 50% of funds they raised to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana. “Again, we felt like donating a portion of the funds we raised to a bigger cause was important,” Zimmerman says. “Many of the families in Fishers are lucky to be able to afford to provide their families a decent living, so we thought that if we are in a position to help others, we should take advantage of that opportunity.” Zimmerman adds that the Fishers Falcons partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana “because they are an outstanding organization that helps families going through some of the roughest times imaginable and that touched us. We decided that we wanted to raise awareness, so as part of our uniforms we wear red and white striped socks as a tribute to their organization.” Zimmerman noted that the team has already had some of the kids visit a local Ronald McDonald House, where they participated in cleanup activities. “We’ve also done some canned food drives and visited a retirement community for an afternoon of crafts,” he says. Overall, the team raised $3,300 this year for the Ronald McDonald House and presented the check to the organization. his own — a project to take on with his wife and four kids.
Over the years, those in the Fishers and Geist area have often driven by the old building located off Cyntheanne Road. The two-story home sits on its own lot of land on the corner of Southeastern Parkway and Cyntheanne— right around the corner from HSE Intermediate and Junior High School. What many may not know is the history found there.
“I live about a mile and a half from (the schoolhouse),” he says. “We were going to a parent-teacher conference one day and I saw a realtor putting a sign up in the yard. I started thinking about it more and more and loved that corner and the building. At the time, the owners were using it as a house and decided to sell. So, I called the realtor that night, put an offer in and we got it.”
The old house was actually built in 1901, originally as a school called Schoolhouse 7.
Tappendorf, who works for Simon Property Group, knows his fair share about the real estate industry. After purchasing the building, he originally decided they would rent the house out and he would work it as a landlord. But once Tappendorf started a few renovations to the home, he quickly came across exposed brick and realized the home
It is a piece of history that Curt Tappendorf and his wife Sarah were surprised to learn about after buying the building earlier this year. Tappendorf, for the last several years, had been interested in opening a venture of

might have been something else in the past. “The more we got into this project, we started to understand the history of it,” he says. “I had no idea it was a schoolhouse.” Tappendorf met with HSE Intermediate and Junior High School Principal Tim Mankin and was surprised to find that Mankin had an old binder full of history, report cards and old photographs from the schoolhouse in the 30s. The binder had been given to Mankin back in 2012 by George Underwood, who attended the school for seven years during his childhood. Sometime after the school closed in the 40s, it was purchased and used as a home. “It was all really cool to see,” Tappendorf says. “That’s when the history started grabbing my attention and I thought, ‘This
WE WANT THIS TO BE A PLACE THAT PEOPLE WANT TO FLOCK TO. IT WILL BE A NICE PLACE TO SIT BACK AND RELAX. could be something really special.’ Back in 2006, the property was actually zoned as commercial. We thought about doing maybe a boutique or a daycare, something to put it to good use rather than just rent out for housing. The more I thought about it, none of those ideas really excited me. I decided that it needed to be a coffee shop. East Fishers does not have very much commercial. The focus has been downtown. It was a good opportunity for us to start something out here that is communitybased. We decided to do a cafe and keep the schoolhouse name.” Tappendorf even had the opportunity to meet with Underwood about the venture and get his opinion on everything they were doing with the former Schoolhouse. Underwood obliged and has provided helpful input for Tappendorf throughout the process.
“We have salvaged a lot of the original woodwork,” Tappendorf says. “The bar downstairs is made from all of the original floorboards to face up the bar. We’ve done a lot of reclaiming of the original wood for tables, the mantle and more.”
Tappendorf has partnered with Brickhouse Coffee in Greenwood. Brickhouse will be supplying the beans for Schoolhouse 7 Cafe. Brit Killinger, a local entrepreneur, caught word of Tappendorf ’s venture and loved the idea and vision. The two decided to go into business together as co-owners.
The outside includes a patio and a drivethru for those looking to grab coffee on the go. The renovation also includes a two-story Both Killinger and Tappendorf have made deck for patrons to enjoy in the summer and the cafe a truly family business. All four of fall weather. Tappendorf ’s children have roles, including 7-year-old Tyler, who wants to be a greeter “We want this to be a place that people want at the doors, Ella, 9 years old, helps pick up to flock to,” Tappendorf says. “It will be a and clean tables, while Aidan, 12 years old, will help with trash duties. Tappendorf ’s nice place to sit back and relax.”
Schoolhouse 7 Cafe officially opened later in August to much excitement. Tappendorf fully committed to the idea and completely renovated the property. The cafe has firstfloor seating for about 25 people, where food and coffee can be ordered. The second floor includes “spill-over” seating for those who want to use the space to study, work or have meetings. The upstairs seating also includes a community table big enough to seat 10 people. The table was created from the original floor joists salvaged from the schoolhouse. atFishers.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11

The main title that I really want is dad. So, I’m excited to have this opportunity where I can involve my family and have them be a part of this on a daily basis. The Killingers share that same value system. Overall, we want to make sure people not only get a great cup of coffee but great service and a great atmosphere when they come here.” Tappendorf has been hands-on with the project throughout the entire process, including driving some of the equipment himself to help get the outside patio and drive-thru completed. Along the way, he’s had some naysayers.
Co-owner Curt Tappendorf
“Throughout the process, I’ve heard, ‘It’s not going to work. You can’t do it. It is too small of a site. You can’t get a drive-thru in Fishers,’” he says. “Those can’ts are what motivated me. I wanted to show my kids, too, that if you believe in something, you can make it work. We hope it’s a lasting landmark for a long time and a place that people enjoy coming to.” Schoolhouse 7 Cafe is located at 12125 Cyntheanne Rd in Fishers. Gigi’s Cupcakes Owner Talks Success of Northside Locations Writer / Kelly Wallace Photographer / Ron Wise
A generous swirl of decadent icing tops all Gigi’s cupcakes. It’s called the Gigi’s Cupcakes signature “Gigi’s Swirl” and it’s what local franchise owner Lory Pappas says makes Gigi’s Cupcakes special.
Gigi’s Cupcakes started as a small, singlelocation bakery in Nashville, Tenn. in 2008. The store was opened by Gina “Gigi” Butler, who decided to pursue entrepreneurship after a decade of chasing a music career in Nashville. Butler used family recipes to develop the menu, and the store’s popularity grew quickly.
cupcakes in Nashville years ago, shortly after the store opened, they knew the bakery could grow into more than just a single-location cupcake shop. The Pappas were persistent in visiting Gigi’s Cupcakes until Butler finally began franchising the business. Today, there are nearly 100 locations in 27 states.

partners Paul and Kathy Arduini, opened their first Gigi’s Cupcakes location in May 2010. Gigi’s Cupcakes locations in the Greater Indianapolis area now include 8981 E 116 St. in Fishers and 8487 Union Chapel Rd. #440 Indianapolis, near The Fashion Mall at Keystone. Lory Pappas is based at the Fishers location and Paul Arduini runs the Indianapolis location. Lory says even though she spent several years working as a nurse, she has always enjoyed baking, worked in a bakery in high school and has always baking at home, so the business was a great fit for her and her family. Lory says she often works 12 hour days from 4 a.m.-4 p.m. and jokes that she is the “butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker.” “It’s hard work,” she says, but she enjoys that “no day is the same.” The stores have all become highly successful, and each location not only sells cupcakes and other sweets at the store but is available for catering desserts for special occasions such as weddings, baby showers, birthday parties, office parties and more. Pappas says they try to serve the community by donating leftover cupcakes to local non-profit organizations and has enjoyed meeting members of the community through the business. “I’ve met some really neat people,” she says. Cupcakes currently cost $3.65 each. Cupcake flavors include Wedding Cake, Scarlett’s Red Velvet, Midnight Magic, Strawberry Shortcake, White Midnight Magic, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Double Stuff, Lemon Icebox, Confetti Fun, Chocolate Salted Carmel, Triple Chocolate Torte (Gluten Friendly) and Wedding Cake (Gluten Friendly). Fall seasonal specials include S’Mores, Haystack, Pumpkin Spice Latte and Pumpkin Spice Latte (Gluten Friendly). The store also sells signature stuffed cookies, mini cupcakes and more. Store hours vary. Visit gigiscupcakesusa.com for more information.
Kammy with her father, Jared Hiner
LOCAL TEEN USES MAKE-A-WISH REQUEST TO BRING ACCESSIBLE FRIENDSHIP SWING TO HOLLAND PARK Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Belinda Russell
“Kammy is full of light,” says Jared Hiner about his daughter Kamdyn (Kammy) Hiner. “The atmosphere of the room changes when she enters. She brings positivity wherever she goes.”
genetic disorder. Diagnosed since infancy, Kammy has maintained her upbeat disposition despite suffering from delayed growth and development, seizures and low muscle tone.
“Since Kammy has a critical illness, we knew she would be eligible to be a MakeA-Wish Foundation recipient,” Hiner says. Just like any other the 16-year-old, the “We reached out to the Ohio, Kentucky Fortville resident enjoys music and and Indiana chapter. Over several months, the outdoors. One thing sets her apart our family participated in the qualifying however, she suffers from Wolf-Hirschhorn process which consisted of two home visit syndrome (WHS), an extremely rare interviews plus multiple emails.” SEPTEMBER 2019
When it came to choosing a wish, it took some time for Kammy to decide. Instead of opting for an experience that would impact only herself, she wanted to find something that would benefit a large number of people. “We were out in a park when Kammy saw a child in a wheelchair,” Hiner says. “When Kammy was younger, she went through a period when she used a wheelchair. Kammy loves being outside, and she remembered not being able to use a swing when she was in her wheelchair. That’s when she decided to use her wish
on a swing that would be accessible for individuals with special needs.” The entire Hiner family began to extensively research possible swings. They selected a design known as a friendship swing. It accommodates two people so a parent or other able-bodied person can accompany a physically-challenged child. The multi-thousand dollar swing will be installed alongside Holland Park’s playground equipment in Fishers. A commemorative plaque will be mounted in Kammy’s honor. Kammy and her family are already fairly well known in the area for the yearly fundraiser, Kammy’s Kause. When Kammy received the diagnosis of WHS, little was known about the disease except that it was the result of a deletion of a portion of the fourth chromosome. The Hiners became aware of 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization called the 4P Support Group whose mission is to improve access to treatment information and encourage research. Since 2004, Hiner has organized a local fundraiser where every dollar raised benefits the group. “This year we are trying something different by not charging admission and instead asking people just to donate what they feel the day is worth,” Hiner says. “On September 14, Main Street in Fortville will be shut down from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for a day filled with music from 14 local bands and more than 50 arts, crafts, food and drink vendors. It’s Kammy’s favorite day of the year. She loves it more than her birthday or Christmas. “When Kammy chose an adaptive swing for her wish many people were surprised that she didn’t ask for something like a trip to Disney World,” her father adds. “But why opt for something temporary, when you can leave behind a message? We hope the swing will be a catalyst for people to think of others and inspire someone to do something for someone else.” For more information about Kammy’s Kause or to donate to 4P Support Group visit KammysKause.org. After losing her battle with depression on July 18, 2013, those closest to Peyton Riekhof established The Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope in her memory. The youth-oriented foundation aims to help others struggling with their mental illnesses and to reduce suicide and suicide attempts across this population. On October 12, the foundation and the Fishers Running Club will team up for Stride Over Stigma, a 5K walk/run beginning at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. It will feature organizations with resources on mental health and mental illness. There will also be entertainment and speakers, as well as food and drink vendors. “We all have mental health, we don’t all have a mental illness,” says Mike Riekhof, Founder of The Peyton Riekhof Foundation. “October is National Depression Education and Awareness
Month, and our goal is to help educate about the signs, symptoms and treatment options for depression and other mental illnesses. There will be health care providers available to screen depression and provide resources. Ultimately, we want all attendees to understand that seeking help — either from a counselor, a trusted friend or your community — is a sign of hope and strength.”
Connecting Physical Health and Mental Health Planning for Stride Over Stigma commenced this spring after the president of the Fishers Running Club, Jeanette Payne, approached Riekhof with the idea of planning a 5K to raise money for The Peyton Riekhof Foundation. “We just kind of went after it — let’s do it, let’s get it done,” Payne says. “It’s pushing forward pretty quickly.” Riekhof has had a relationship with the Fishers Running Club for about two to three years. He’s been to a couple of their SEPTEMBER 2019
weekly runs and given talks about mental health and wellness. “We are really trying to tie in physical health with mental health — trying to make them equal,” Riekhof says. “We, as a community, recognize physical health as an important factor in our lives, but mental health often gets overlooked. So it’s nice to tie the two together, and that’s one of the goals of this run.” For the Fishers Running Club, they hope to be able to build resources and give back to the community, just like The Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope is doing. “As a running club, we use running as something that helps with our mental health,” Payne says. “As such, we want to help everybody else find good mental health. We want to reach out and help the community any way that we can by building resources and finding ways to give back to the city and to things like the Peyton Riekhof Foundation so they can continue to help in a bigger effort.”
Payne describes the event as something that is a little more laid back and something where everyone will be able to walk around and find out the resources that are available. “That’s the biggest part of it all, we want everyone to know that they’re never alone,” Payne says. “Whether a phone call or a text or an easy-access way from someone that is willing to help them if they’re struggling.” Riekhof says the name for the run came from the community’s need to get rid of the stigma associated with mental illness. “It’s one of the things that we need to do continuously across the community, get rid of the stigma associated with mental illness and the shame and guilt associated with mental illness,” he says. “As you tie in the name “Stride Over Stigma”, it goes into the theme of what this 5K is all about.”
Benefiting Youth-Oriented Programs All funds raised from the Stride Over Stigma 5K go directly back to the community. Although the foundation doesn’t have any paid staff, it has been able to pay two licensed counselors to lead support groups in both HSE high schools and two junior high schools for one hour each week. Additionally, the foundation is starting a scholarship fund with four other non-profits for families that can’t afford copays or treatment for their mental illness.

“The school has a very good relationship with Community Health Network and that provides care for students who need it on a day-by-day basis,” Riekhof says. “What we are doing is supplementing that by using two private licensed counselors. They’re not fulltime in the schools. We hit both high schools and those support groups contain about 1215 students each, and then now we’re going into the junior highs for the first time.” Since the foundation’s establishment, Hamilton Southeastern School counselors and teachers have been trained, and the schools have added a Mental Health Coordinator. Riekhof says that Community Health Network has become a valued partner in the schools and the city has embraced SEPTEMBER 2019
mental health as a priority. Junior classes across the schools have heard the message of hope for going on six years now. “You are not alone, it’s OK to not be OK,” Riekhof says. It’s Riekhof ’s hope that the 5K can not only provide hope for adolescents and the youth but for the entire community. He views it as a way to educate and create awareness across all demographics around proper mental health and mental illness. “Ultimately, we want people to speak up about their own personal illnesses that they may be hiding from or suffering from in silence and then to seek and find resources and get help,” Riekhof says. “Our mission is to end suicide across all the different demographics that it’s impacting every day.” Registration for Stride Over Stigma is forthcoming. The run will begin and end at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. “Sponsorship opportunities are available, and we are very proud to have St. St. Vincent | Ascension Stress Center as our title sponsor,” Riekhof adds. Visit fishersrunningclub.com/ strideoverstigma to register, volunteer or learn about sponsorship opportunities for this event. POPULAR ALEHOUSE LAUNCHES SECOND LOCATION OFF 96TH STREET Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
before opening the doors in late January of this year.
Following on two-plus years of success in Greenwood, Tried & True Alehouse owner John Gladish is off and running with a second location on Indy’s northside, in the space formerly occupied by long-time Indy establishment Moon Dog Tavern and, more recently, 32 Taps.
“We did a little bit of demo and turned the back dining room area that used to be a live music venue into a family dining space,” Gladish says. “My wife painted almost every wall in the dining room area, and we did some various small things to make it our own.”
Gladish says the location was a natural fit for his concept, which combines what he describes as elevated pub food with a casual, family-friendly aesthetic.
Everything from the food to the music and atmosphere at both locations, according to Gladish, was formulated in honor of the establishment’s name.
“When the space became available, we realized we liked the location and just went for it,” Gladish says.
“Tried and true, of course, refers to things that have stood the test of time and that’s what we’ve hung our hat on, with everything from our menu to music to things hanging on our walls — things that have stood the test of time in our culture,” he says.
Gladish and his team officially took over the space on East 96th Street in August of 2018, and began a six-month renovation process
SEPTEMBER 2019
Food-wise, Tried & True offers a sizable lunch and dinner menu seven days a week, consisting of scratch-made pub food. You’ll find nacho trays, wings, salads, wraps, flatbreads and full-on entrees like the BBQ Bacon Chicken Dinner and the Beef Filet Tips & Shrimp. “Our breaded tenderloin sandwich is our No. 1 selling sandwich entree, and with both locations now we’ve sold more than 40,000 of those in the last two years,” Gladish says. Recent customer favorites also include the Chicken-N-Waffle Bytes, with hand-cut chicken breaded in a waffle batter, then deep-fried and served with maple syrup and a powdered sugar topping, as well as the scratch-made Lulu’s Buffalo Chicken Dip and Southwest Chicken Nachos with homemade black bean sauce.
All ages are welcome for lunch and dinner, and customers can watch one of the establishment’s 35 televisions while an ongoing soundtrack of mainly classic rock music fills the air. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights, and Tried & True recently began hosting live music on Fridays, in addition to Sunday night music on the outdoor patio. More than 50 beers, with 32 on draft, are offered at any one time at Tried & True, including a range of local brews like Sun King, Daredevil and Taxman. “We have the usual strong domestic sellers, but we also want to keep it as local as we can and rotate different local beers out,” marketing director Nick Workman says. Gladish adds that in its first year Tried
&True has gotten primarily positive feedback from northside patrons. “We make everything that we possibly can from scratch, and I think customers can ultimately tell the difference when they taste scratch-made food versus something where there’s a lot of ingredients that have been frozen,” he says. “I think customers are appreciating that part of it.” Workman adds that Tried & True has wasted no time getting involved with the local community through food donation and charity partnerships, recently hosting a silent auction to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children. “We try to do as much community involvement as we can, and we’ve been
SEPTEMBER 2019
trying to help raise money for Riley where they set up a table of memorabilia and stuff, and people can come in and do silent bidding,” Workman adds. Gladish hopes the northside Indy location is the first of multiple Tried & True locations throughout the Hoosier state. “When we opened the first Tried & True, our intentions were to create a successful concept to be able to grow in Indiana, in the Indianapolis area first and then outside of that over the years to come,” he says. “So far it’s going well here on the northside.” Tried & True Alehouse is located at 4825 E. 96th St., Suite 1600, in Indianapolis. church to Orthodox Christianity last year with his wife, Loni.
The 23rd annual St. George Festival on Sept. 20-22 presents “a heritage of faith, hospitality, good food, music and crafts from our roots in the Holy Land, the Middle East and the cultures that make up our congregation,” according to the Rev. Fr. Nabil Hanna, pastor.
“I have the opportunity to really set the stage for what visitors are going to experience. I’m a good talker, and I like that,” Ron says.
The family-oriented festival includes ethnic food booths, a live Middle Eastern band, adult and children’s dance troupes, marketplace and a children’s carnival on the front lawn with shaded adult seating areas. One new feature this year is a return of the indoor marketplace and pastry booth in the air-conditioned parish hall. The Silent Auction is also back by popular demand and will feature different items each day. Shuttle buses will run continuously from offsite parking five minutes away at 10401 East 116th Street. He explains a little about St. George, its history and the church’s ethnic makeup. While the church’s roots are in the Middle East, almost half its members are converts. But they also include immigrants from a dozen countries in the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia. The church’s bookstore will be open daily. Indoor hosts will explain more about the Orthodox faith and the church’s unique architectural design and iconography, which was painted by Greek iconographers after the church’s construction in 2013. Food booths will offer gyros, kafta, chicken sharwama and falafel sandwiches. Platters choices will include lamb shanks, a mezza SEPTEMBER 2019

The pastry shop will have a mouth-watering assortment of Middle Eastern pastries such as baklawa, honey roasted mixed nut bars, galaktoburko, custered filo pastry, kaak, makaroon, and ghouribeh. A complete menu is available at stgfest.org. The times for the St. George Festival are Sept. 20, 5:00-10:00 pm, Sept. 21, 1:00 to 10:00 pm and Sept. 22, 1:00-5:00 pm. The event is free to attend. FISHERS TRI KAPPA DONUT FESTIVAL RETURNS OCTOBER 5 AT SAXONY HALL Writer / Madeleine Mills-Craig Photography Provided
Entering their third year of establishment, the Donut Festival, hosted by Fishers Tri Kappa, will be held at the Saxony Hall Pavilion on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children and those three-years-old and under get in for free.
Siebert says. “We’re able to cover some of those grants that the foundation couldn’t cover. Last year, we raised $2,500 for the grant. One example of the grants that we supported was for a teacher at Sand Creek Intermediate school who did a podcast learning club. She was able to buy some equipment that we were able to provide and help the kids with communications skills. That’s an example of the grants that we’re able to help out with.”
“Your ticket gets you into the event and you can taste all of the donuts and coffee that you want. We actually have voting so that you can vote for your favorite donut and your favorite coffee,” Siebert says. “It’s kind of just a fun morning with donuts, coffee and enjoying some time with each other.”

looking for a way to refresh our fundraising efforts because we’ve been doing one event for over 20 years. Our group was kind of ready for something new. We were debating between doing something with the Donut Festival or a trivia night and people were just really excited for a Donut Festival. We look forward to participating with the local vendors and just raising funds for the teachers.” Tri Kappa decided on directing the funds generated by the festival to the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation because, in the past, they had provided scholarships for students there. The issue was that there were only a few scholarships offered and those offered were for only a few hundred dollars. “We decided to relook at that and figure out how we could impact more students rather than just a student here and a student there,” Siebert says. “We took an opportunity and looked at what was going on in the schools and we found there were all of these grants that were going unfunded. This was a great way for us to refocus and be able to impact more students in our community.” For those interested in attending the festival, tickets can be found on the Tri Kappa Donut Festival Facebook page. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children and those three and under get in for free. The festival is on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets provide an unlimited amount of coffee and donuts at the festival.

ANNUAL USO OF INDIANA FIVE STAR GALA RETURNS SEPTEMBER 14 Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by USO of Indiana
the military, and the 2019 USO of Indiana Volunteer of the Year.
On September 14 Indiana residents will have a chance to support U.S. military members in a unique fashion by attending the annual United Service Organizations (USO) Five Star Gala at the Westin in downtown Indy.
Fishers resident Teresa Becker, who joined the USO of Indiana four years ago with her husband Todd after their son Lee and daughter Jennifer both enlisted in the military, joined the Five Star Gala committee three years ago. Since then, Teresa has helped put together the evening’s auction items, which she says will comprise more than $30,000 in goods and experiences this year.
The Gala will feature dinner and live music from Indy-based band The Bishops, live and silent auctions for a wide range of items and experiences and a special ceremony honoring this year’s Indiana Five Star Medal honoree, Outstanding Military Service Member honorees from each branch of
“It’s a chance to not only give of your time and help our service members, but at the Gala you can meet some wonderful people SEPTEMBER 2019
and have a fun evening,” she says. “For us, it’s been a labor of love because we love our military and feel like they and their families make such sacrifices on our behalf.” This year’s auction items will include a stay at the Waldorf Astoria resort in Maui, a night at the French Lick Springs Hotel, a skydiving session, golf equipment, gift baskets and more. “There will be a lot of nice things to win,” Teresa says. “Coast to Coast Imports in Fishers is giving away an exotic car experience, where if you win you pick out a car at the dealership and get it for the weekend. They’re bringing one of their cars
to have out front at the Westin on the night of the event and that will be fun.”
USO OF INDIANA FIVE STAR GALA
Teresa adds that the Gala is the USO of Indiana’s largest fundraising event, and 90% of all contributions to the organization go directly to operating its centers and funding programs offered to U.S. troops and their families.
When: September 14; Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will commence at 7 p.m. The program will conclude at approximately 10 p.m.
“Todd and I were out at one of the USO centers at the Indianapolis airport a few years ago and said to each other that we want to help serve those who serve,” says Teresa, whose brother was in the Navy and whose father served in the Korean War. “Even though my own kids were off serving and weren’t here, it made me feel like we could take care of other people’s kids that are in the military.”

The USO of Indiana, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created in 1941 as a chartered affiliate of the USO with six centers currently located throughout the state, depends almost entirely on local corporate and individual contributions to keep its programs and facilities operational. Last year the USO of Indiana served more than 124,000 servicemen and women at its locations. “The USO of Indiana centers serve as a home away from home by keeping our troops connected to family, home and country through a wide variety of programs for them and their families, and by providing them with a comfortable, homey place to relax, grab a snack or meal, play games, use a computer or enjoy fellowship of other soldiers while away from home,” Teresa says. USO was founded as a nonprofit prior to World War II as a way to boost military morale through live entertainment, social facilities and other programs and special events. USO currently hosts events and distributes care packages around the world and has created several outreach programs including the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program and the Oxygen Stronger Families Seminars.

ROMAN & LEO ALL-BOYS BOUTIQUE BRINGS SNAZZY CLOTHES TO NEW SPARK APARTMENTS LOCATION Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Michael Durr
About 10 years ago, when Angela and Justin Castelli were pregnant with a baby boy, they headed to the mall, eager to pick out some spiffy duds for their newborn. But the merchandise they found left them underwhelmed. “We didn’t want ducks, trucks, teddy bears and sailboats,” Angela says. “Justin and I looked at each other and said, ‘Are these the only options for boy clothes?’”
“What if I opened an all-boys boutique?” she thought. But after doing some research and finding zero boys boutiques in existence, she let the idea fizzle.
a physical location opened in June 2014 in the Nickel Plate District. Now, more than five years later, her brand is not only surviving but thriving.
“I figured there must not be any demand for it,” says Angela, an 11-year resident of Fishers. In 2013, however, she suffered a benign brain tumor, a health scare that caused her to reconsider the idea.
“Every day moms thank me for thinking of boys and creating a location where moms can be excited to shop for items just for boys,” Angela says.
Those items consist of trendy styles like “Life’s too short,” her husband told her. “You unique graphic tees, skinny pants for boys, need to open that boutique you’ve been and bandana bibs. They also carry fun taking about for so long.” accessories like SnapBack caps, slouch beanies, bow ties and suspenders. ColorAngela shopped online, choosing more At first, her dream was trounced upon by wise, they stock lots of blacks, whites and modern styles. Once her son, Roman, naysayers who insisted an all-boys clothing greys, rather than the traditional mint was born, everywhere she went, people store wouldn’t fly. Angela remained greens, baby blues and yellows that are commented on his snazzy clothes. It seemed undeterred, though, and in 2013 launched reserved for boys. others appreciated Angela’s eye for style, Roman & Leo Boys Apparel & Accessories too. pieces in the form of throwback retro tees of ACDC, The Beatles and Tupac. Many tees are tri-blend, which means that they’re super soft and comfy. “Anything Indiana sells well,” Angela says. For instance, one year she had Colts pajamas that sold out in a day. The “with them Indiana boys on an Indiana night” tee (referencing Tom Petty lyrics) is also wildly popular. “Items in our shop sell out quickly, but being a boutique, we don’t want to carry hundreds of the same thing because then it’s not unique,” Angela says. When she was pregnant with her third child, customers asked if she gave birth to a daughter, would she change the store to 50% girl merchandise.
“I would never do that. Our shoppers love this store because it’s just for boys,” says Angela, noting that though she doesn’t specifically carry anything for girls, that doesn’t stop moms from shopping for their daughters. “They’ll put their girls in little graphic tees and cardigans with leggings and a black headband,” Angela says. “They don’t necessarily want the pink and purple all the time, so my store offers an alternative style that’s tomboy chic.” Roman & Leo, the only boys boutique in the Midwest, carries up to size 8. “What we’ve found is that once boys get into school, many want to wear only athletic apparel,” Angela says. “I’m in the thick of it now with my oldest sons. We
don’t carry athletic apparel styles. Our breadand-butter is baby and toddler wear.” Open Tuesday through Friday from 10-5 and Saturday from 10-2, Angela chose store hours that are conducive for moms to shop while their little ones are in daycare or preschool. Online orders come through during all hours of the night when moms have down time. “Social media is such a mom network because they post pics of their kids and if a friend asks where they got a piece of clothing, they’ll hop online and purchase it,” says Angela, noting that they offer an option for in-store pick-up too. Recently, Roman & Leo moved to its new location on the first floor of the Spark Apartments in Fishers. After outgrowing their first location on 116th Street, they’ve doubled their space, allowing for more inventory, and more unique styles for boys. They are now located at 8800 North Street #115. challenged himself to keep decreasing the time it took to solve a cube.
When Fishers residents Brad and Karen Garrett complied with their son Luke’s request for a Rubik Cube, they had no idea what they had just set into motion. That appeal made at the beginning of Thanksgiving break when he was nine years old has opened up a whole world of travel for the Garrett family plus the opportunity for Luke to interact with people of all nationalities. Now 13 years old, he holds world rankings with the World Cube Association (WCA) in three speedcubing events and is sponsored by an online company, TheCubicle.
“Each time he finished he would get progressively faster learning new algorithms to reduce the number of moves to solve,” Brad adds. “From the time he decided he wanted to learn how to solve a cube, it has been his goal to be one of the top competitive cubers in the world. As parents, we had no idea that competitive cubing even existed.”
“After months of practice Luke told us he was ready to enter his first competition,” Brad says. “This is very out of Luke’s comfort zone so we were thrilled. He entered his first competition on June 25, 2017, in Ann Arbor, MI. He competed in two events, the 3x3 and 2x2 cubes. With 96 competitors he made the 3x3 finals finishing 16th with an average time of 13.46 seconds. When we left that day, we knew that cubing was his passion and that we would be back.”
First developed as a three-dimensional puzzle in 1974 by Hungarian, Ernő Rubrik, the Rubik’s Cube continues to be one of the world’s most popular puzzles. The colorful square has six faces and an internal “Luke said to his Mom, ‘Do you think we turning mechanism which scrambles and could go to the store tonight to see if they unscrambles individual panels. The goal have a cube? I would like to try to solve one.’ is to return each face to just one color. We bought him his first Rubik’s Cube and Luke uses a version called a speed cube he would not go to bed that night until he which is tensioned, magnetized, lubricated had solved it,” Brad recalls. “He watched and modified with rounded corners. YouTube videos for hours until he figured it Unlike many children his age, Luke didn’t out. Once it was solved, he would scramble lose interest in the hobby, but instead, 40 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atFishers.com
Since that first experience, Luke has gone on to participate in competitions of all sizes throughout the United States, traveling across the Midwest as well as Alabama, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wyoming. He has earned more than 70 first, second, or third-place finishes in 3x3, 2x2 and 3x3 One-hand and even takes part in events where the cube is solved with feet. A highlight was Luke’s top 16 finish among over 600 competitors for the first
round of 3x3 and making the semi-finals in three different events at the July 2018 USA Nationals in Salt Lake City.
13-year-old Luke Garrett holds world rankings in the World Cube Association.
“We were pleased when he began to be sponsored by an online cube store, TheCubicle in April of 2019,” Karen says. “Sponsorship includes cubes, gear and recognition on the Team Cubicle website as well as a custom-made USA white jacket to wear to competitions, but the best part is that they monitor social media for Luke’s protection.” In July of 2019, the Garrett family traveled with Luke to Australia where he participated in two international events, Warm-up Sidney and Melbourne’s Rubik’s Presents WCA World Championship. Against more than 900 other competitors from 48 countries, Luke finished seventh in 3x3 with feet, 25th in 3x3 and 30th in 3x3 one-handed. Luke and his team of two other Americans finished in the top four in a relay, Rubik’s National Cup. “Competing is very fun and I don’t see it getting old anytime soon,” Luke says. “The best thing about competitions is improving my personal bests, having fun cubing and competing with my friends. I hope to continue to meet lots of new people going forward.” When he’s not traveling the world for cubing competitions, Luke attends Fall Creek Junior High and participates on the Academic team. In just over two years of competing, Luke’s skill level has advanced rapidly. Currently out of 100,000 competitors registered in the WCA database, he has accrued impressive rankings. Worldwide, he is rated 27th in 3x3, 25th in 3x3 one-handed and 32nd in 3x3 with feet. At Nationals this year, Luke improved his 3x3 world ranking average to 15th (4th in US) with a 6.54 average and his single to 4.95 seconds. He also finished fifth overall in 3x3 and fifth in feet. “There are no words and we could not be happier that Luke has found his passion,” Brad says. atFishers.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 41

enthusiasm and excitement about the school environment,” Chastain says.
Danielle Chastain, principal of the brand new Southeastern Elementary, 12500 Cyntheanne Road, says the new, nearly 93,000 square-foot school has been a big hit in the Fishers community.
The new learning areas in the $22M facility have had an immediate positive impact.
Chastain notes that one of the unique features of the building is that it has a modern learning environment with a greater variety of learning spaces to better address the needs of students.
“We have shared the importance of building community as we build the culture of our learning environment and as we design the learning spaces,” Chastain says. “This has been really well received by all.”
During the design of the facility, CSO Architects really focused on creating a very compact building where a high percentage of the available square footage was used for educational spaces in lieu of circulation space.
The two-story Southeastern Elementary is similar to other schools in the district. CSO Architects designed the building, which was funded through a construction referendum that voters passed.
There aren’t any long corridors in classroom wings at Southeastern Elementary, which is a prominently different feature. The classroom groupings are instead clustered around a student-centered community
The modern learning environment, which opened on August 7, has also touched a positive chord with many people. The welcoming atmosphere in the facility enhances the learning process. “Our parents, students and community members have responded with great

area called an activity commons to form neighborhoods.
The neighborhoods offer a flexible, collaborative and secure learning environment that offers a variety of learning spaces such as a quiet area, a group collaboration area and active learning areas.
“The interior of the building features a high amount of transparency between spaces to support the concept of ‘learning on display,’ and to also allow for passive supervision from the classrooms to the activity commons and small group rooms,” says Jim Funk, principal of CSO Architects. “Each neighborhood also has direct access to one of the three small multi-level interior courtyards. These courtyards bring natural light into the center of the building and offer each neighborhood a direct, secure outdoor learning connection.”
“The most enjoyable part of all is watching the students engage with one another in the space,” Chastain says.
The exterior of Southeastern Elementary has made it easy for parents and school bus drivers, too.
The Southeastern Elementary building has five of these neighborhoods, each with six classrooms, three small group rooms, a STEM room, restrooms and storage.
Outside the building is a designated parent pick-up and drop-off lane that features a two-lane wide drive around the parking lot. It creates enough space to keep vehicles off the main road during the peak morning and afternoon hours. The bus lot is gated and doubles as a hardsurface play area for students during the school day. Chastain adds that the first days of school went very well. “We have observed a great deal of joy in learning and building relationships this week,” she says. “This is simply the best part of being in education.”
