FORMER HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR OPENS STELLA & NASH CHILDREN’S BOUTIQUE
Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photography provided by Allie Baughman
There’s a cool new children’s clothing boutique in downtown Fishers, and you’ve got to check it out. Stella and Nash just opened their new storefront in August after being an online-only retailer for just a year. Owner Jacquelyn Thompson was pleasantly surprised to be able to make the leap to a storefront so quickly, but then the whole journey into becoming a children’s clothing retailer was unexpected and wasn’t even originally on her radar. Before opening Stella and Nash (named for her two children) online in 2017, Thompson had
been a school counselor for several years, guiding high school students through the college admissions process, intervening with at-risk high school youth and working with at-risk elementary school children. But great things often come in unexpected packages, and they did. “When I had my second child, I’d reached a crossroads, and I discovered I needed to be at home more,” Thompson says. So, her husband, who also owns his own business, encouraged her to start her own business and website. Thompson wasted no time coming up with a plan. 6 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
“It was a no-brainer to choose children’s clothes,” she says. “I treasure the memories of shopping with my mom for clothes as a child, and I’ve always loved fashion.” Thompson’s love for fashion met her love for the Fishers downtown area, and she put plans for the storefront in downtown Fishers in motion. “We used to stop in Fishers when traveling from Illinois to Fort Wayne when the only thing there was the McDonald’s and a gas station,” she says. “I’ve watched it grow into a hub with unique businesses and owners with an amazing entrepreneurial spirit. I’ve always wanted to be part of that.”
The online boutique was already achieving great success, but the real pull to make her dream a reality came after she got tremendous customer response following exhibiting at the Indy Mom Market. “I realized I was missing out on that contact with customers,” Thompson says. “So, when the building on Maple Street became available, I was ready to buy it. I’m so proud to be a part of the growth of the Fishers business community, right in the middle of the hub.” Now that Stella and Nash has celebrated the grand opening of their new store on Maple Street, shopping for the cool kids’ duds has become more convenient for local customers, but the online store is still available. “We still have a huge online following of customers from every state, but now that we have the extra space, I can fulfill the orders from the store rather than keeping it all in a warehouse,” she says. When you come into the store, you’ll see what the rage is all about. They carry girls and boys clothes sizes newborn to size six, and girls clothes in the tween sizes, 7-14, a line which Thompson is preparing to expand. “We carry cute, trendy kids’ clothes at an affordable price. Nothing is over $32, even party dresses,” she says. Thompson seems to have made most of her dreams come true with the store’s opening, but she hasn’t lost sight of two more of her goals. “I want to hear the customers remark about how cute the store is and rave about the friendly staff and great customer service,” she adds. Check out all the cool kids’ clothes for yourself. Visit the store at 11639 Maple Street right in the heart of downtown Fishers. You can check them out online at stellaandnash.com, or give them a call at 317-764-8627.

Gourmet Treats business in Broad Ripple in October 2009.
The secret to the success is simple: they make delicious desserts.
Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
“My mother (Patrice Young, who goes by ‘TC,’) was a wedding cake baker and caterer for years and had a dream of having her own bakery one day,” Colvin says. “With both of us having a passion for baking, we decided to open one together. We are a family-owned business. We have no formal training, just a love for baking.”
“We bake everything in-house daily and deliver (our treats) to our Broad Ripple location,” Colvin says. “Our specialties are cupcakes and custom cakes. Once we get settled in (at the Fishers location), we will be hosting different decorating classes for children and adults.”
Well, SweeTies Gourmet Treats Owner Tiffany Colvin says you can. Her Broad Ripple business at 2101 Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis, has been so popular she recently opened a second location in Fishers at 8902 E. 96th Street. Colvin, a Broad Ripple High School graduate, has loved turning her zeal for making high-quality desserts into a way to make a successful living. She loves what she does, so every day is a sweet treat for her. She started the SweeTies
It was a gamble that has paid off handsomely. It has become a fixture in Broad Ripple and has already taken off in Fishers. “We decided to open the Fishers location because we felt there was something missing here in this area, which is Sweets,” Colvin says. 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
SweeTies sells custom celebration cakes, wedding cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, cheesecakes, pies and more. Customer favorites at SweeTies include Brown Butter Carmel Cake or cupcakes, Sweet Potato cupcake, Fresh Strawberry Lemonade cupcake, Fresh Strawberry Cheesecake and Sweet Potato Pie.

“I like the Sugar Cream Pie, Brown Butter Carmel Cake, Carrot Cake, Carmel Apple Pie, Bread Pudding and Tres Leche,” Colvin says. “Just to name a few.”
Colvin says SweeTies also has a popular food truck.
Colvin wants SweeTies to be her customer’s one-stop destination for all of their desserts. The shop has a popular daily menu, as well

As a kid growing up on the west coast, Ed Gebhart and his buddies would play Cops & Robbers around the neighborhood. More often than not, Gebhart would lead the way on the cop side, tracking down his friends and serving justice to the “robbers.” Today, Gebhart, the new Fishers Police
Chief, is living a dream that he says really began in his childhood and developed more in his early adult years.
things, and I didn’t mind that. I was very drawn to the police uniform itself, even at an early age.”
“Growing up we watched shows like ‘T.J. Hooker’ and ‘Chips’, those early T.V. shows probably inspired me more than anything,” Gebhart says. “My friends and I would go out on our bikes and play Cops & Robbers in the neighborhood and emulate those shows. I was always on the Cops side of
When he was 19 years old, Gebhart went on his first ride along, and he knew right away that his calling was in law enforcement.

“I was hooked,” he says. “I definitely knew where I was headed after that. I’m a guy that likes to be moving around a lot and on my
feet, and the job gives you that.” His resume and experience over the years speak for itself. By the time he was 21 years old, Gebhart was working in the sheriff ’s office in Colorado. He moved to Fishers in 2000, where he has served on the SWAT team, patrol commander, assistant chief and more. Gebhart has decades worth of experience tactically, operationally and on the administration side as well. He even attended the FBI National Academy back in 2012. Experience on both sides, he says, has prepared him for the role he is in today. After serving for two years as assistant chief, Gebhart was officially sworn in on Sept. 7 as the new police chief. He took over the role after former chief Mitch Thompson resigned following a drunk driving incident. Despite the sudden change, Gebhart was not thrown off his guard. Serving as
assistant chief, and working under the previous chiefs, naturally prepared Gebhart for the role he is now in today. He says taking over as chief didn’t really hit him until the swearing-in ceremony. “I don’t feel any different today than I did as the assistant chief,” he says. “I’m a part of a team coming into a job with a great group of people. That is how I feel every day. It doesn’t dawn on me generally that ‘you are the guy.’ But my swearing in was somewhat emotional. I got emotional because you think about all the different people that supported you along the way. I didn’t get to where I am today because of me, I’ve gotten here because of them.” What made the day even more special for Gebhart was being able to share the moment with his family. His wife, Aimee, pinned his collar brass for his swearing-in ceremony. The tradition in law enforcement is that your mentor pins your collar brass, and they atFishers.com / NOVEMBER 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 13
send you off. “It is a big deal,” Gebhart says. “She pinned my collar because she helped me get through a college education, she’s raised our kids, she allows me to go do all these phenomenal things. It is our spouses that pick us up off the floor in a job that can be quite negative at times. There was a lot of emotion for me in that moment.” Looking back throughout his career, Gebhart says police chief was never necessarily a goal he had written down to check off one day. Still, in his 24th year in law enforcement, he has found himself at the helm of a department that he calls his second home. “In 1994 when I applied for my first job, I wrote down that I wanted to be a sergeant and a team leader of SWAT,” Gebhart says. “Those were my career goals. I didn’t think that those higher roles would be a possibility until maybe 2010.”
Gebhart takes over as chief during an exciting time for the Fishers Police Department. The city and the FPD recently celebrated the grand opening of the brand new 48,000 square foot headquarters. The new station is located at the Municipal Complex across from City Hall and even includes a new public parking garage. The amenities are unlike anything the FPD has had in the past, including a full gym, new forensic labs, a huge evidence room, numerous interview rooms, office spaces, conference rooms and more. “It is a good time to be a new chief because it all feels new,” Gebhart says. “Our staff has moved in and are getting adjusted. We are able to bring all of our resources home under one roof. Our child exploitation and computer forensics unit is here with us now. We are all here and working together. I am very excited about what we can achieve moving forward. We are going to continue doing great things as we have before. This new building sets the tone for that.”
Ed Gebhart was officially sworn in as the new Fishers police chief on Sept. 7
Out of the uniform, Gebhart is a family man. If he isn’t fishing, he’s off on camping trips with the family or having friends over to relax and visit. “We really don’t take ourselves too seriously,” he says. “We like to get out of town and away from cell phones and technology and enjoy the outdoors. You just try to enjoy as much out of life as you can. I’m not Chief Ed when I walk through the door at home. My family will humble me immediately.” With 2018 goals already in place for the department, Gebhart says conversations are already starting about the department’s main goals for 2019 and beyond. For now, he assures that the FPD’s focus has been and always will be on the safety and protection of the Fishers community. “We will keep moving along as we always have, doing the right things at the right time for the right reasons,” Gebhart says. “The police will always be there when the community needs them. For next year, we will look back at 2018 and see how we can get better. We will look and see what places that we fell short and can do a better job of moving forward.”

When members of the U.S. military are deployed overseas, their significant others and children are often left shouldering additional daily household burdens. That was certainly the dilemma Fishers resident and Navy Reserve member Elliott Hultgren and his family faced in 2015 when he was notified of an upcoming year-long deployment to Djibouti, Africa. “My wife and I had three kids at that point, and we have four now,” says Hultgren, who currently serves as Fishers deputy mayor of administration. “I realized my wife would be doing so many of the chores on her own, and there was a sense of guilt with leaving a whole pile of stuff in your loved one’s lap. All the little things like house chores and mowing the lawn pile up with children in
the picture.” Mayor Scott Fadness and Fishers Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Eric Pethtel had gotten wind of Hultgren’s deployment news, and began discussing doing something nice for his family during his absence. “Mayor Fadness said we should just send some of our Public Works team to mow Elliott’s lawn and take care of shoveling the driveway,” Pethtel recalls. “It was just a casual answer during a conversation we were having, but that was the spark of the idea, and we ended up going through the legal steps and came up with a plan.” That plan became formally known as the Fishers Hometown Help for Heroes (HHFH) initiative, and, since 2015, 20 Fishers families in Hultgren’s situation 16 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
have received DPW assistance according to Pethtel. The program’s services include driveway and sidewalk snow removal within 24 hours after snow accumulation of more than two inches and lawn mowing and trimming services on an as-needed basis during summer months. Any family living in Fishers with at least one head of its household deployed in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces is eligible for the program for the duration of the deployment. “It may not seem like much, but when you put yourself in our shoes having multiple kids and so much going on, it provides a sense of comfort and support to my wife and to me,” Hultgren says. “It’s huge to not have to worry over the logistics of those kinds of things, like getting the lawn taken care of, and focus on doing what I need to
be doing on my mission.” Pethtel says the Fishers DPW has been able to incorporate HHFH duties into its ongoing city workload without creating any budgetary or staffing issues. “It's part of our daily work duty — we do all the things like taking care of city hall and the city parks, and then we take care of our active military,” he says, adding that the DPW has helped as many as seven military households at one time since 2015. “I’m proud of our team. We have people that are eager to be the ones to do this work for our military families here.” Of all the programs and initiates the Fishers DPW has offered to residents during Pethtel’s 27 years with the department, he says the Hometown Help for Heroes is his favorite. “I thoroughly enjoy being able to provide
this to our local families,” he says. “I have two sons in the military, and I know what it's like to have them away. I'm very proud of our team and their willingness to step up and do this work.” Hultgren hopes the initiative catches on in cities across the country via social media and word-of-mouth. “In the military, you get to meet people from all 50 states. I told everyone I could about this program and from what I could see, no one else is doing this in any other

cities,” Hultgren says. “People were blown away that my city back home was out mowing lawns and shoveling snow. We would love every county and city to adopt this. We’d love for it to be the start of something big.” To learn more about the Hometown Help for Heroes initiative and apply for assistance, call the Fishers Department of Public Works at 317-595-3160 or visit fishers.in.us/685/Hometown-Help-forHeroes for more information or to apply.
PURE AIR ENVIRONMENTAL (317) 760-7873 pureairenvironmental.com
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
As we head into cold and flu season, it’s wise to think about air purification, especially since according to the state health department, 195 Hoosiers died from influenza last year. Pure Air Environmental is an authorized distributor of the Puradigm Air Purification and Surface Decontamination system, which eliminates 99.9 percent of bacteria through the air and indoor surfaces. This includes removing any single-cell bacteria such as staph, MRSA, listeria, salmonella, C. Diff, influenza, common cold and many other harmful pathogens. “This technology really applies to everyone. If you’re breathing, you will benefit from Puradigm,” says Pure Air Marketing Director Jon Hartley. Old-school technology was extremely passive, allowing air to simply pass through your ventilation system while UV light attempted to remove mold and allergens in the ducts only. It really did very little to improve the overall indoor air environment. Hartley describes the Puradigm system as an aggressive, proactive push technology. “It’s advanced now to the point where it’s proactively pushing two million highenergy ion clusters out into your physical environment which destroy impurities and pathogens in 1/76th of a second in the air and on surfaces,” Hartley says. “That’s why it’s so effective and protective.” Not only does the Puradigm air system remove bacteria, but it also has been clinically proven to remove 99.9 percent of mold and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) that are off-gassing from new
building products such as glues, adhesives, formaldehyde and even the plastics and materials that are in building products themselves. VOC’s are a concern as the vast majority have been linked to carcinogens. Pure Air Environmental, a small familyowned business, began five years ago as a radon mitigation company. “Indiana has a great deal of radon gas due to our soil material,” Hartley says. “What’s in our substrate beneath our homes gets up into them and it can’t escape because we’ve built our homes so airtight.” Ventilating radio-active gas from homes is crucial as statistically 21,000 Americans die each year due to long-term radon gas exposure. Protection is as easy as installing a radon mitigation system to safely vent the gas to the exterior. The EPA recommends testing your home every two years as radon gas levels fluctuate due to environmental factors. Pure Air Environmental also cleans air ducts and offers mold remediation services to remove black toxic molds and the toxins they’re off-gassing. You may not think much about indoor air quality, but Hartley says people really should. The EPA recently released a study that showed that poor indoor air quality can reduce one’s life expectancy by 5-7 years. Hartley also cites another study that identifies indoor air quality as the number one threat to our 18 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
children’s generation in the coming years. That’s due, in large part, to the fact that society functions differently nowadays. “Generations ago, people used to open their windows and let their homes breathe,” Hartley says. “Now the thought is on energy efficiency and we seal them up tight. Nobody opens their windows anymore. As a result, they’re not getting that fresh air exchange and building those immunities to bacteria by being exposed to natural environments.” It can be hard to convince people of the dangers of poor air quality because it’s not a tangible problem in front of them. It often times does not alert any of your five senses. That’s why air quality testing is so vital. “It’s important to know what you’re breathing in your home and what you are putting in your lungs because it does make a health difference,” Hartley adds. “Every breath matters.” For more information, call 317-760-7873 or email info@pureairenvironmental.com. L to R: Brandon Leum, Mike Riekhof and Erik Robinson are leading the charge, bringing a full slate of events in November to raise awareness for men's health.

born along with the idea for the men’s health events in November.
Over the years, “Movember" or “No-shave November” has become quite popular in raising awareness for men’s health. Two local organizations are piggy-backing off the idea but looking to dig a little deeper than not shaving for a month.
“Hopefully we save some lives and get men out of that mindset of being too proud to admit they have issues or talk,” says Mike Riekhof, founder of The Peyton Riekhof Foundation. “We want men to realize through these events that they are not alone. There are plenty of us out there who have baggage.”
The organization’s goal of bringing “hope and encouragement to men and assisting in building community to walk with them through life” is one born through Robinson’s own life experiences.
Building a Refuge and the Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope have partnered to bring a full slate of November Men’s Health events to Fishers. Though the events will be held in Fishers, all men, regardless of where you live, are welcome to attend. The goal — to break down the stigma of men’s health issues like depression and suicide and give men an outlet to talk,
Riekhof met Erik Robinson years ago at a faith-based community event in Indy. Over the years, Robinson also attended some of the Peyton Riekhof Foundation’s Night of Hope events. It didn’t take long for the two men to form a bond and a friendship. That friendship led to conversations around men’s health and Building a Refuge was atFishers.com / NOVEMBER 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 19
“I actually wound up in prison from 2012 to 2014 through some bad decisions that I’d made,” Robinson says. “A lot of the stuff I was dealing with leading up to that got worse because I isolated myself. It got so bad that it ended up with an attempt on my own life. When I think about this event and think about how we can get guys there, I think about myself. Mike and I have made it our mission to get the word out about this to everyone.
“The biggest thing we want men to realize is we are not asking anything of them when they come to these events,” Robinson adds. “The only thing we are asking them to do is come. That is the first step. The idea behind the events is creating and developing community. Hopefully, men will build relationships and feel like they can eventually share what they might be going through. But right now, this isn't a Kum Ba Yah event where we will call men out specifically asking them to share. That won’t happen.”

The November events conclude Nov. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harley Davidson of Indy for a “Men’s Cafe with Collaborative Change” get together. The idea for the Men’s Cafe is a laid-back atmosphere for men to share ideas, gain a support system and continue building community. The Finale event wraps up the men’s health month on Dec. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Harley Davidson of Indy. The Finale event will be family-friendly and include BBQ, a live band, college football, Sun King beer and more. Participants will also be able to compare beards for a final photo. Throughout the events, groups from all walks of life will be on hand to meet and talk with participants. “This is not a religious event,” Robinson says. “But there will be local pastors there, therapists, men’s groups, outdoors groups and many other different organizations. We want to provide outlets for men to plug in

Originally from a small farm community in North Central Indiana, Haxton has been around textiles all her life, from custom “I have always had a heartbeat for refinishing clothing to vintage furniture. Upon trying old furniture,” Haxton says. “Even when I her hand at custom upholstery, she quickly was a little girl, my neighbor, who was kind discovered she had a knack for it. of a grandmother-type figure, taught me how to keen chairs. Then, I learned how to “When I, as an adult, took professional refinish wood furniture. intersection in all of those worlds.” With a master’s degree in healthcare administration, Haxton worked professionally in that field while operating a vintage retail shop in Noblesville as a hobby. For this space, she’d flea market pieces and then fix up or repurpose them. However, after acquiring some more upholstery supplies, she found that the demand for her work was much greater than she originally thought. “Very quickly, I started getting a lot of requests for custom pieces to be done, so I shifted in a fairly short period of time,” Haxton says. “I got out of my vintage shop, and I went full-time with custom upholstering. That’s when I really made
the decision to treat this more like a business and not a hobby.” After operating UpCycled Interiors out of her home for four years, Haxton moved the business to its current home on Main Street in Fortville. For her, the storefront space made sense for many reasons. “I was looking for a larger workshop space, and I looked all over,” Haxton says. “I just happened to run across this space here in Fortville. It’s only about 10 minutes from my home in Fishers, so that was huge for me.” Additionally, the space allows for her to host workshops, which is something she had never done before. “I teach decorative pillow design, which is a one-evening class,” she says. “I teach a box cushion construction class, which is a two-evening class. And then, I teach upholstery, which is a six-week series.” In addition to bringing people into UpCycled to check it out, these courses also allow Haxton to meet likeminded do-it-yourselfers, too. “I wanted to teach, and I have so many people that are interested in do-ityourself projects,” she says, adding that those who are interested can find out about classes via the UpCycled Interiors Facebook page. “It’s just super fun to teach people how to do this type of thing for themselves.” By offering such a unique service, Haxton is able to cast a fairly wide net with UpCycled Interiors.

Local Coffee Shop Inside Geist Christian Church Serves Up a Heavenly Cup of Joe Writer / Megan Jefferson Photographer / Michael Durr
Schuyler Glancy was a junior in high school when he started working for Higher Grounds coffee shop. At that time, Higher Grounds’ headquarters is in Fort Wayne, and they had a couple of shops here in the Indianapolis area. Glancy worked at their shop located inside Geist Christian Church, on the corner of 126th Street and Promise Road. Glancy enjoyed his time working at the coffee shop, but he stopped working there when he graduated from high school and went on to college. After college, he worked a couple of different jobs, owned a candle
business and also owned a seasonal ice cream store. An entrepreneur at heart, he was interested in owning and operating something new. Glancy wondered what became of the little coffee shop he used to work at inside Geist Christian Church. He contacted the church and learned that Higher Grounds no longer operated there, and the church was running a coffee shop there themselves and was about to close it, as it wasn’t very profitable for them. Glancy offered to lease the space. Geist Christian Church agreed. Glancy also reached out to Higher Grounds in Fort Wayne to ask about opening a branch in Geist. Higher Grounds wasn’t 24 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
interested in expanding, however, they gave him permission to open a store and use the brand. Glancy was thrilled, especially to be in the exact location where he worked as a high school student. “I think it’s the people,” Glancy says when asked why he wanted to own a coffee shop. “In general, the coffee industry is great because of the people you serve. It’s almost like you get to know your customers and they’re part of your family. Coffee is a comfort drink. You get a hot cup of coffee and have a conversation and it’s just so welcoming and inviting and it’s something I’m really happy to be a part of.” Higher Grounds is not only for Geist
Christian church members, it’s open to the public as well. They are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Because they are located one block down from Fishers High School, it’s a great space for students after school. “We have lots of tables and comfortable chairs for students to meet and do homework and study groups,” Glancy says “Obviously, because we are in a church it’s also a wonderful place for Bible studies as well.” Higher Grounds is located within the church lobby so it’s very spacious. There’s a
friendly, family vibe. There is a nice outside area where kids can draw with chalk. Trails circle the property and lead to a creek that runs through the backyard.
we certainly have a lot of information to provide. Whether you’re coming here for the coffee shop or the church, you have exposure to the opposite, if you want it made available to you. It’s a cool opportunity for all of our customers, just by coming into the building.”
Glancy loves being located within the church. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement.
High Grounds Coffee is located inside Geist Christian Church at the corner of 126th Street and Promise Road in Fishers. For more information, visit them online at hagfishes.com or give them a call at 317863-6509.
“It’s kind of a cool partnership because we have customers who are coming in just for the coffee shop but they also get that church exposure too if they’re looking for it,” he says. “If they are looking for a new church,
