LET’S PLAY BALL! LAUNCH FISHERS ADDS TONY MONTELEONE TO THEIR TEAM
Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Growing up, baseball was a great part of Tony Monteleone’s youth and continued to be through college. Sharing the love of the game with his dad, both were umpires. “My first startup was an efficient online site for streamlining sports officiating,” Monteleone said. “It was a sign up and payment software helping people with game assignments and efficiency with payments for an industry lacking technology.” Do what you love and the money will follow. This rings true sometimes, as long as your passion doesn’t destroy your startup. This is a potential paradox of entrepreneurship. And this very concept is something that Launch Fishers, along with the Launch Indiana initiative, is helping their members, and those across the state, to avoid. Recently the Wall Street Journal dedicated its small business section to entrepreneurship and the pitfalls to steer clear of. So you’ve survived the shark tank, now what? “Lots of well-funded startups, not just the fledgling ones, need mentors,” says Monteleone. And this is where he steps in to help. All companies need mentoring. Even Launch, when it was getting started, paraded more than a hundred people through the basement of the Fishers’ branch library, asking, “What do you think? Is this a good idea? What else haven’t we thought of?” These are key questions to ask. Monteleone’s formal title is the entrepreneurial services director. He was a baseball player, an umpire, and now he’s a coach. Launch Indiana provides
high-level mentoring opportunities for companies across the state. The goal of Launch Indiana is to increase chances for success for innovation-driven entrepreneurs, one-on-one coaching, and high-level mentoring opportunities for startups. With the mentality that “a rising tide lifts all ships,” and under the helm of John Wechsler and other Hoosier entrepreneurs, the Launch Indiana initiative is working on keeping startups in Indiana by providing a solid foundation of support. Through the Indiana Co-Working Passport, another feature within Launch Indiana, members of Launch Fishers and others across the state may register online to use office space at 20 sites statewide for free, including Matchbox in West Lafayette. “There are facilities downtown Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Columbus, and all over the state, so any of our members or members of other co-working sites may sign up to spend a day per month at one of the other co-working sites,” states Monteleone. Cross-pollination is the goal for these co-working sites. Adds Monteleone, “Our greatest resource is our connections, and networking among these groups is a valuable commodity. The Indiana Co-Working Passport is huge for members.”
His skillset was gleaned from a variety of sources, including some large, successful tech companies. Sometimes you learn exactly what you want to do and where you want to be by being in a situation that you, quite frankly, can’t stand. There is nothing more educational than working for a stifling, non-creative company. “I want to help others be successful. I knew that I wanted my voice and ideas to be heard and listened to. I re-ignited my entrepreneurial passion by working in the antithesis of that,” Monteleone said. Now he is Launch Fishers’ latest draft pick. There are many examples where the best players don’t make the best coaches. Not to knock his playing abilities, but this is why Monteleone’s skills are focused on helping others. His specialty is taking ideas to scale. He is purpose-driven. It is time to share, to give back and help raise that tide. For further information, visit indianacoworkingpasspost.com, launchINDIANA.org and, of course, launchFISHERS.com.
But can he handle a curve ball? At the age of 14, Monteleone stood behind home plate, worked his first championship game, and tossed a coach. At age 32, a curve ball might look different, but it is still no problem. Given his experience and enthusiasm for his job, there isn’t much Monteleone can’t handle.

9 PEYTON PLAYS ON 0 Writer / Marcia Vigren
September 6 batted off the inaugural “Play for Peyton Memorial Softball Tournament” at Olio fields. Softball tournaments can be a dime a dozen, but this one was different. It was personal. It was a fun, competitive, educational, moving and possibly life-saving event that honored Peyton Riekhof. Riekhof was an athlete, 2013 HSE graduate, scholar and caring peacekeeper. She loved softball and played from 2002 to 2012 within the HSE-Fishers Youth Softball League and at HSE High School through her junior year. She earned an academic scholarship to the University of Kansas and would have attended in the fall of
2013. However, Peyton, who suffered from depression, took her own life last year.
something, and have fun. The day was a huge success.
Peyton’s parents, Mike and Mitzi Riekhof, desired to do something to honor their daughter while spreading the awareness and education about the symptoms of depression, signs of suicide and where to get help. They also wanted to raise funds to support awareness programs and for the organizations that support these causes. The Fishers-HSE Youth Softball League was very receptive to the idea of hosting a charity event and soon the Play for Peyton Memorial Softball Tournament was born.
More than 600 players, coaches and parents were informed about mental health, depression and suicide prevention and were even provided screening tools and resources, invaluable for this vulnerable age group.
Thirty-four travel softball teams of girls ages 10 to 18 came to play, learn a little
Money was raised through entrant fees, vendor sales, donations and concessions to support these causes. Many people came together to make this significant tournament a success. More than 90 volunteers put in their time and hard work, including the umpires, provided by NSA. Even Olympic gold medalist Christie Ambrosi was there
A memorial softball tournament was held at Olio Fields in Fishers to pay tribute to Peyton Reikhof who played all four years of high school softball at HSE. 10 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / OCTOBER 2014 / atFishers.com

to talk about softball as it relates to life. In the words of Peyton’s brother, Grayson: “If Peyton were here, she’d by smiling, watching this.” Organizations and health care workers including American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis, Center 4 Hope, ASPIRE and Young Life, were all present to distribute information and spread the word that it’s OK to talk about depression and mental illness. “Depression is a difficult disease to understand... especially if you don’t suffer from it,” said Mike Riekhof. “There’s still a stigma associated with depression, like it’s a sign of weakness. It’s not a sign of weakness. It’s a serious disease like cancer, heart disease or diabetes. My goal is to strike out the stigma associated with mental illnesses and suicide.”
“Peyton had everything. She was beautiful. She was smart. She was athletic. She had a heart of gold. Yet she couldn’t find happiness. I’d ask her why she was sad, and she would say, ‘I don’t know. I have everything.’” Peyton’s parents took her out of school to get help. She received counseling, took medication and went through behavior outpatient treatment, but the disease of depression was too powerful.
and would love to travel to Indiana to attend this tournament. Another coincidence? In addition, it was revealed that Christie’s team number was 11 — the same number that Peyton wore when she played ball. Spine tingling coincidence? Doubtful. Christie Ambrosi was destined to be there. She may have been playing from way out in the outfield, this time, but Peyton surely was involved in making this important event a win.
Earlier this year, after Mike decided to hold a tournament, his brother, Tom, who lives Community Resources for Mental Health: in Kansas City told his hairdresser about it. afsp.org As it turns out, his hairdresser was Christie aspireindiana.org Ambrosi who played shortstop (the position center4hope.net Peyton played) on the 2000 USA Olympic in211.dreamhosters.com Softball Team, which won the gold. Come all ye lords and ladies. ‘Tis time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Fishers Renaissance Faire as you travel back to the golden age of Queen Elizabeth I. Experience a true British historical sensation as you meet more than 250 costumed characters, watch full-contact armored jousting by the Knights of Valour, swordplay, comedy stage shows, roving comedy, fire breathing, aerial acts, juggling, knighting ceremonies, parades, and listen to live music from various entertainers. Volunteers of this theatrical production work hard nearly all year in order to capture the Elizabethan era delivering every detail with graceful eloquence. If she were here today, the Queen would highly approve of the Renaissance Faire (Renfaire) because she recognized the importance of arts. During her reign, England was granted permission to build professional theatres for the first time. No wonder some of the most influential playwrights and literary scholars originated in England such as William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Edmund Spenser and Sir Philip Sidney. “The Renfaire cast is portraying a reenactment of the Queen’s visit to Bylerica,” says Adam Fivush, Chairman of Fishers Renfaire, who has been with this organization since the planning of the very first event. He explains the setting, “The year is 1579. The season is late summer. Conditions in London are so unfavorable such as hot temperatures, rats running around, and Black Death plague that the nobles have fled to different rural areas such as Bylerica. It’s sort of like an invasion where 500-600 people arrive at the town and expect the peasants to feed them and take care of them until the end of summer when they will return to London.” Hence, Renfaire will feature the cast of characters ranging from peasants, middle-class, nobles and authentic European faerie folk. Adam’s wife, Andrea Fivush, is the cast director. Their son, Jason (12), has performed as Toby the cabin boy and will someday use his musical talent to entertain with his parents. “I’m always surprised when I speak to Fishers residents at the Renfaire who have lived in the area for years but never been to the event,” says Jessica Springman, Fishers Renfaire Marketing and PR Chair. “This is one of the biggest events in Hamilton County next to the Fishers Freedom Festival and the largest event that brings visitors to Hamilton County from out-ofstate. We’re in the process of planning our 10th Anniversary Faire which will be spectacular.” The faire will be held at Saxony on October 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. rain or shine. “We consider the Renfaire a family-friendly occasion and try to keep ticket prices at a minimum,” says Springman, who has volunteered for this event for nine years. “Many may not realize that this is a non-profit event that serves as a fundraiser for the Sister Cities Association of Fishers, Indiana (SCAFI) a non-profit organization that uses the proceeds to fund a
student-teacher exchange with our sister city of Billericay in England for both HSE and Fishers High Schools.” In addition to organizing and sponsoring the Renfaire, SCAFI also helps support Fishers Rotary Club and Fishers Kiwanis Club. When possible, SCAFI funds a scholarship program. Incidentally, SCAFI coordinated with Fishers Parks & Recreation to create Billericay Park off 116th and Promise Road, named after this sister city, which is located 60 miles east of London. To learn more about this partnership, visit sistercitiesoffishers.org.
Behind-the-Scenes Family Ingenuity
Creativity runs in the family as Springman’s family members help make this event successful. Her daughter, Madaline (17), has been a cast member for eight years, serving as a member of the Queen’s household for one year and the Fairy Guild for seven years. Her son, Stephan (13), is a general volunteer. He not only takes photographs for the event, but also helps with the set-up and with any other area he’s needed. Her mother, Chris Springman, has made the family’s costumes and participated in the event as a stained glass merchant presenting her hand-made glass beads, wind chimes and windows. She also served as artisan chairman for a few years. Jessica Springman’s three sisters have helped paint signs and backdrops with their mother throughout the last decade. Her youngest sister, Alex Segal, a graphic designer, has helped with the Faire all 10 years. “Our mom has always been artistic and we picked it up from her,” she says. “She is a wonderful seamstress. She has outfitted the family with hand-sewn costumes for everyone.” Segal met her husband, Hershel, at Renfaire. Together they perform in a pirate comedy show called Hey Nonny Nonny Players. Segal reminisces how she met her husband when he starred in this show as the Pirate Captain with the hook-hand. “I had been helping out with the Faire on the committee side and was watching the dress rehearsal one day,” Segal says. “Afterwards, my girlfriend [Andrea Fivush] invited me to play cards and board games with the crew. This is when I met Hershel.” Not long after, Segal joined the comedy show and together they wed. They now have a new addition—2and-a-half-year-old baby girl, named Alana. Although they haven’t performed for a couple years to spend quality time with her they plan to return to the show next year and hope to someday include her in the script. However, they do plan to attend the faire in costume as a family. Hershel’s clever invention of his prosthetic hook-hand has attracted many youngsters who come up to test his handshake and truly believe he’s Captain Hook.

Obviously, this close-knit group of cast members share quality time. Still today, the Fivush family hosts card and board games every Saturday night stemming from when Alex first met Hershel. Each year, after the Renfaire, Springman invites the entire cast to a bonfire at her farmhouse that was built in Noblesville around 1860. These families and characters live and breathe the truth within their roles and relationships. Their intentions reflect not only a genuine respect to the real characters with whom they represent but also a true inspiration to all members of the audience.

FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE Writer / Devon Dean
Becoming a crime statistic is one of the worst feelings imaginable. It’s like a quick punch to the gut that leaves a nasty, empty feeling behind. I’ve been there. You may have too. The morning I realized my car had been stolen, I felt unlucky and possibly cursed (the same car had been burglarized a couple months prior). At the time, I told myself I needed to take more precautions to ensure my personal safety. Fast-forward more than a decade. On the way to work several weeks ago, I saw the aftermath of a shooting at the edge of my usually quiet subdivision. It was enough to refuel my desire to be proactive. I took part in a Women’s Self Defense Seminar hosted by Fishers-based Krav Maga Indy. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, we crowded inside a hot martial arts studio to learn the basics of self-defense.
Aged 18 to retirement, we took turns hammering our fists into boxing pads and pushing our partners off of us. Some of us giggled during sparring, feeling slightly embarrassed and hoping this will ready us in case the occasion should arise. “We love the groin,” Instructor Jeff Fredericksen tells us. “It solves a lot of problems.” The women around me share looks of bewilderment and surprise. “The eyes are another point to aim for when all else fails,” he continues, putting his hand over his sparring partner’s face. He goes on to demonstrate how to effectively strike those areas of the body in a myriad of situations. Fredericksen is an expert—he’s the Head Instructor at the state’s only official Krav Maga Worldwide training center. Fredericksen opened the center in 2008 and has trained law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels. Krav Maga originated in Israel in the late 1940s/early 1950s as a means of military

training in a short span of time. It was brought to the U.S. in 1981. Fredericksen offered the class several key takeaways, rooted in common sense: 1. Awareness: People often fall prey to criminals simply because they’re not
paying attention. Fredericksen says always be looking around, especially when you’re alone in a public place like a mall parking lot. 2. Body Language: Stand tall, walk with purpose, and look confident. The less fear you show in your face and body, the less likely you are to become a target.
ITS NOT TOO LATE TO START YOUR DREAM BACKYARD PROJECT. ENJOY THIS FALL WEATHER IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR NEW OUTDOOR FIREPLACE.
3. Have An Escape Route: Know where the exits are and how fast you can get to them in your home, school, or office. 4. Tell the Story: Fredericken says if you do end up in a hostile situation, tell the story. He likened it to bathing a cat. “When you try to put your cat in the tub, it becomes very vocal,” he laughs, but he has a point. Yelling and describing what’s happening to you can be the difference between life or death. The overarching theme is simple: “Get home alive.” Krav Maga Indy will be having another, more comprehensive self-defense seminar on October 11.

WALK FOR WOMEN’S LUNG HEALTH AWARENESS Writer / Kara Reibel
On Oct. 18, the American Lung Association is holding an inaugural LUNG FORCE walk to raise awareness for women’s lung health with a focus on lung cancer. “LUNG FORCE is a new initiative to make lung cancer in women a public health priority, to drive policy change and to increase research funding,” says Sheena Lee, Special Events Manager for the American Lung Association in Indiana. Lung cancer is the most deadly form of cancer for women, and prevention is a major part of the cure, but not always. In Carrie Aloisio’s case, she acquired a rare form of lung cancer without ever lifting a cigarette to her mouth, with zero family history, and without being consciously exposed to secondhand smoke or any other known factors. “It began with a cough,” she says. “The cough progressed, and before I knew it, I was having surgery to remove the majority of my right lung.” Her final diagnosis came only after surgery: mucoepidermoid carcinoma. She was 38 years old at the time. Luckily her form of lung cancer is rare, occurring in less than 0.1 percent of all cases and does not require chemotherapy or radiation. The surgery to remove her lung occurred in May of 2013, and as soon as she could, she went back to what she loved: running. She was a runner before the diagnosis, having just started running halfmarathons like the Geist Half. Of course, after surgery, and with TOWNEPOST MEDIA NETWORK / OCTOBER 2014 / TownePost.com

adapting to having only one lung, she was learning to walk again and slowly building up her strength. Aloisio was able to run her first half-marathon 11 months later, which occurred in April of this year. “I wanted to finish a race before the one-year mark of my operation,” states Aloisio. “That was my goal and I did it!”
be a survivor to participate; you can walk/ run to show support for those who can’t be there physically. And just because they can’t throw on their athletic shoes and come out on October 18, doesn’t mean they aren’t runners.
picked the wrong diva! My one lung and I are doing just fine, because you CAN say “cancer” and “cure” in the same sentence.
Aloisio created the shirt she wore in her first half-marathon post-surgery: Lung cancer

Well said.
Diane Tetrick came from a family of smokers. Of course they smoked, with a family legacy of tobacco farmers from Kentucky. However, she has never taken a puff, but she had been exposed to secondhand smoke. Her dad died after losing a horrible battle with lung cancer. Tetrick’s sister, Barbara, died on the operating table because of lung cancer; she had been a smoker. Tetrick, now 63 years old, has been in remission for the last two years. The first symptom for Tetrick was also a cough—a nagging one that wouldn’t go away. Having a sister who had just died from lung cancer, she insisted on a CT scan. Two spots were discovered, so portions of each lung were removed, with her family by her side. Marvin, Tetrick’s husband who is retired from GM, and their kids, were there with her throughout the process. Their son, Marty, an Army warrant officer, and their daughter, Mindy, a teacher at Center Grove, are a source of pride and resilience for their parents. A spiritual woman with a strong faith and married 46 years to her high school sweetheart, Tetrick is tough and takes it as it comes—with optimism. And even though she found out that another surgery is required, she is ready. She has staying power and possesses all the signs of a positive outcome. These are only a couple examples of survivor stories. There are plenty of others who are running their own race of sorts. Tetrick has a “team” walking with her at LUNG FORCE. Aloisio does, too. For all runners and walkers, the goal is to cross the finish line. Aloisio wished to recapture that experience. She also wanted to prove to herself that she was capable of doing it with only one lung. You don’t have to

L-R: Kevin Kirkpatrick,Co-Founder of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services IN Realty Craig West, President of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Holly Martin, President of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services IN Realty John Dick, Co-Founder of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services IN Realty
Prudential Indiana Realty Group, a local force in real estate brokerage here since 1981, will become Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty this October. For nearly 35 years, Kevin Kirkpatrick and John Dick have led their real estate company with distinction, building it from a storefront enterprise in central Indianapolis in 1981 into an Indiana powerhouse with a wellearned reputation for excellence. On October 7 of this year, in a regional rollout bringing new energy and new signage to 18 offices and hundreds of yard signs, the company embarks on its next exciting phase of growth as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty. “Affiliating with Berkshire Hathaway with the full strength of Warren Buffet behind us is one more step in our proven commitment to innovation and quality service,” Kirkpatrick said. Craig West, President of the Affiliate Division, said the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices brand will resonate well with clients in all market segments and with real estate sales professionals. “Our real estate network is one of the few organizations entrusted to use the Berkshire Hathaway name,” he explained. “We believe sales professionals will be proud to represent this world renowned brand, which was named the Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year recently by Harris Poll EquiTrend.” Stephen Phillips, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices president, welcomed Kirkpatrick and his company to the brand. “We are honored to add Indiana Realty to our network ranks,” Phillips said. “Kevin is a highly respected broker who holds industry leadership roles at the local, state and national level. Indiana Realty is one of the industry’s top companies and is a generous corporate citizen with strong support for local and national charities.”
Consumers will be able to search for properties nationwide from the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices website (BerkshireHathawayHS. com) and can even provide lender grade property valuations by showing off market data like Sold and Pending information when they sign up for Inside Access, giving them far more information than available elsewhere. The information available includes not only off market data, but consumers can also research details including commute times with the INRIX Drive Time plus Walk Scores to show proximity to parks, schools, restaurants, etc. for any property, giving them a far better feel for their ideal property. BHHS Indiana Realty is a full-service agency with a 30-year reputation as a premier Indiana company. “Our dedicated agents,” Kirkpatrick said, “most of whom can boast multiple years of market experience, are doing in excess of 5,600 transactions a year, and what really sets us apart, is our seamless and customized service in all segments of the market.” Especially well known for expertise in the high-end market, the company has become the leader for relocation expertise in the state as well as for the ancillary services offered. “Just as important,” Holly Martin, President of Indy Metro Division, said, “I think we’re recognized as a caring part of the community. We have proven leaders in all of our offices with numerous marketing partners and agents that have been recognized as Realtor of the Year for their service to both our industry and our communities, as well as President of the State Association of Realtors.” Consumers can look to BHHS Indiana Realty for continued top tier expertise and service for all their real estate needs, and with the backing of Berkshire Hathaway and its $200 billion in net worth, they will know the latest tools and technology will always be there to support their agents’ success in providing that excellent service. “When people are making the decision of the magnitude of buying a house, it’s the biggest decision a great many families will ever make,” according to Warren Buffett. “I would want to be associated with somebody where the financial strength was unquestioned and where the name stood for integrity.” Look for the new Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty signs in neighborhoods all across Indiana soon.

DICK WOLFSIE RELEASES NEW BOOK
THE RIGHT FLUFF Writer / Janet C. Striebel
Dick Wolfsie, the jocular word-slinging wizard, has just released his 13th book titled, The Right Fluff: Weightless Observations About Life on Earth. In this volume of lighthearted compilations you will understand how Wolfsie received permission from his wife to join a strip club, why he has only round numbers in his checkbook, why he is listed as female with Medicare, how he stole another man’s underwear, and how he got caught pandiculating in public. “I love finding things in life that are annoying to other people but strike me as funny,” says Wolfsie who has written more than 700 humor columns within the last 15 years. “I’m always delighted when I meet people who tell me that they have read one of my columns, clipped it out from the paper and put it on their fridge because they could identify with my entertaining reasoning.” Wolfsie has had a distinguished and varied media career in Indiana. His syndicated column is published in 40 newspapers and also appears twice weekly on WFYI Radio. If you haven’t read his work or heard him on radio, then you have most likely seen him on WISH-TV where he has served as a feature reporter for 25 years. His personal stories and video essays have been syndicated nationally. Although he was a former high school and college English teacher, he eventually shared his unique brand of humor across media platforms including more than 10,000 hours of television. His contributions have earned him many honors including a regional Emmy for best host, national ACE Award, and Casper Award for five years as host/producer of AM Indiana. Wolfsie lives in Geist with his wife, Mary Ellen, and their beagle, Toby. His other popular books include Mopey Dick: Deep Thoughts From a Shallow Mind, Indiana Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities and Other Offbeat Stuff and Mornings with Barney, a true story highlighting Wolfsie’s endearing relationship with his mischievous pet beagle. Piney Acres Farm Rounding out the recommendations for a fun-filled fall day is the lesser-known option found at Piney Acres Christmas Tree Farm. Piney Acres offers both daytime activities for the entire family and haunted attractions for those looking for a thrill. The kids’ area includes a two-acre corn maze, gem mining, a new 16’ spider web rope climb, old-fashioned games, a straw mountain, cow milking and more. Gem mining is priced per bag and the kid’s area is $6 per walking child for unlimited play. Free parking is offered at Piney Acres and a free barnyard including chickens, goats, guinea pigs, and ducks is sure to please parents looking for fun and frugal options. Haunted attractions have been upgraded this year, and group discounts and combo packages are available for hayrides, corn maze, and Haunted Loft experiences. New this year, a farm fresh breakfast will be available every Saturday morning through the fall season and will feature local produce. Fewer crowds and a friendly staff make Piney Acres the perfect place to enjoy all that fall has to offer. If you miss this stop on your fall tour, pre-cut and cut-your-own Christmas trees will be waiting for you beginning Nov. 23. igerONE is a new all-sports booster club at Fishers High School (FHS) supporting all athletic teams and student athletes. Led by a group of parent-volunteers and FHS athletic directors, TigerONE is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization focused on securing tax deductible donations to benefit FHS student athletes.
“We started planning last fall behind the scenes with the athletic directors who were very supportive,” said Joe Eaton, president of TigerONE. “I met with co-athletic directors Jim Brown and Rob Seymour [Seymour replaced Jon Miles who retired in June.] Our primary goal is to raise money for all student athletes and teams. There are 20 different athletic teams comprising over 1,000 girls and boys.” The key objectives of TigerONE include the following: • Raise funds to benefit all FHS student athletes, coaches, teams and booster clubs • Provide scholarships for program support fees and graduating student athletes • Provide 501(c)(3) tax exempt status for booster clubs and/or athletic teams • Recruit volunteers to support all FHS athletic teams • Promote attendance and school spirit at all FHS sporting events Annual membership is now available on individual, family, and corporate levels. Membership information is available at hse.k12.in.us/FHS/athletics or by emailing Fhstigerone@gmail.com. TigerONE’s primary fundraising initiative for 2014-2015 school year is to raise $100,000 to purchase exercise and cardio equipment for the new 6,000 sq. foot weight room being constructed as part of the FHS Senior Academy. Thousands of students will use the new weight room every year and corporate sponsorships are available in two ways: an annual corporate membership of $1,000, or TigerONE is offering permanent naming rights on one of the 16 weight racks in the new weight room for $4,000. “Another primary goal for TigerONE is to help students with the cost of the new program support fees,” Eaton said. “Some families may have more than one student participating in sports which can be costly.” In addition to raising money for the new weight room, TigerONE is seeking corporate sponsorship of a scholarship fund to assist FHS student athletes with program support fees and related athletic fees and expenses and to eventually provide scholarship opportunities for graduating student athletes. “So far, TigerONE has been incredibly well received,” Eaton said. “It’s been great to see how this has all come together. Everybody has united to achieve this ultimate goal to help our student athletes— FHS Principal Jason Urban, the athletic department, the 20 sports teams and their coaches, and the volunteers of TigerONE.” Joe Eaton, president of TigerONE, & Rob Seymour, Co-Athletic Director atFishers.com / OCTOBER 2014 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 39

What if you were no longer able to sit at the bar of your favorite watering hole, sip a mildly hoppy craft beer on tap, and decompress with your colleagues after a long day of work? What if the law suddenly prohibited your occupation as the “corner confessional,” otherwise known as a bartender? Life suddenly becomes less tolerable in this scenario for some of you. And it was a lot less tolerable for many of our ancestors who endured Prohibition in the United States. Prohibition was a constitutional ban of the production, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages from 1920 to 1933. Spearheaded by social progressives from both the Democratic and Republican parties, Prohibition was mandated under the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It would not be repealed until December 5, 1933 with the ratification of the Twenty-First Amendment. The anti-prohibitionists, or “wets” as they were known, protested against the Prohibition as they felt that it was an intrusion on urban, immigrant and

The temperance explained. “Some people thought that the groups pushed for the passing of the Baxter root cause of the bad things that went on in Liquor Law in 1873, which required saloons their daily lives was alcohol-related. Lingering effects of the Prohibition are still evident in the daily lives of Hamilton County residents. Indiana is the only state where one cannot buy packaged beer, wine and liquor on Sundays, and it’s the only state that regulates alcohol sales based on temperature. Only licensed liquor stores can sell cold beer. Exhibiting the history of our nation’s Prohibition and ratification of the TwentyFirst Amendment are our local historical societies and Indiana State Museum. The ISM is hosting their exhibit, “American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition” now thru Feb. 15, 2015. The Indiana Historical Society has a traveling exhibit, “Hoosiers & Their Hooch: Perspectives on Prohibition.” The Carmel Clay Historical Society recently acquired this exhibit on loan and shared with local residents and visitors the era’s conflicting cultures through colorful historic figures such as Edward S. Shumaker of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, as well as the bootleggers, moonshiners and bathtub gin distillers who found their way around the law in Indiana. Visitors will also see how Prohibition played out in Hamilton County. The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 5 at the Monon Depot Museum, which is operated by the CCHS in downtown Carmel.
Honoring the history of Prohibition in Hamilton County, the CCHS proudly presents its “Flappers and Dappers” event this October 10 at the Bridgewater Club in Carmel. The speakeasy themed event is celebrating the traveling exhibit and subject of Prohibition. “It’s going to be a great time,” Dill exclaimed. “It’s a fun and exciting way to support the CCHS and a great way for us to show people that history is exciting, relevant and it’s now.”
Tickets for the 18th Carmel Clay Historical Society Holiday Home Tour this Dec. 5 and 6 will be available for purchase at the Flappers and Dappers event as well.
Guests of the Flappers and Dappers event can expect to walk in a back door kind of experience designed to make patrons feel like they are walking through the back room of a local venue to an undisclosed speakeasy. They will be offered signature drinks, cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, mock gambling and great music from Barometer Soup that will play modern dance music for non-Foxtrot types. A VIP experience will take place from 6-7 p.m. on the evening of the event. A specialty cocktail, souvenirs and special experiences that are not open to the general public will be available for the VIP ticket holders. Tickets are $60 for non-members and $50 for CCHS members. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Ticket information is available at carmelclayhistory.org.
Just the tour will begin at Coxhall at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $20. Contact the Carmel Clay Historical Society at carmelclayhistory.org for more details. The tour focuses on historic homes or homes with antiques. We provide community heritage and encourage preservation of this heritage. The old McShane house on Westfield Boulevard was slated for the wreaking ball. Carmel Clay was instrumental in saving this piece of Carmel history. The home is on this year’s tour.
This year all tours will begin at the Coxhall Mansion, 2000 W. 116th St. There is an evening tour on Friday and Saturday after an evening of heavy hors d’oeuvres and an auction beginning at 6 p.m. for $40 per ticket. A cash bar is available.
For more information on the IHS’s traveling Prohibition exhibit and the Indiana State Museum Prohibition exhibit, visit their websites: indianahistory.org and indianamuseum.org.
“This exhibit is about Prohibition in Indiana and how Hoosiers experienced it,” Dill said. “The exhibit also demonstrates how it affected things now. Indiana has the strongest anti-alcohol laws in the nation. To a degree, elements of Prohibition are still a part of Hoosier history. It’s a great tie-in with what’s going on locally with the opening and prevalence of many new local breweries, tap rooms and wineries. The after-story is that people are interested in drinking not to become intoxicated necessarily and cause havoc on the city and in their lives but as a way to relax and as a social engagement.” Prohibition was a failed political tactic that was used to deprive adult citizens of a freedom and the ability to moderate and make moral decisions for themselves.
Prohibition affected leisure time for many nationwide, including the sports industry. Submitted by the CCHS.

eamwork, dedication, focus and hard work are what drive the Fishers High School girls soccer program. However, it is their foundation of leadership that the girls are most proud of. The entire varsity team is a member of Leaders for Fishers, a club with shared values with Leaders for Life International. Many of the girls have attended the Leaders for Life summer camps, bringing back with them tools and team-building ideas to share. “It’s amazing how we have grown on and off the field,” forward Maryna Clark says. “The challenges that we have overcome have made people believe in us and given us the confidence to believe in ourselves. I wouldn’t want to be a part of any other team.” Defender and co-captain Maddie Peebles states, “We really do have a great team, but it’s not because of individual players or raw talent; it’s because we work hard for each other, we care about each other, and we know what we’re working towards.” Defender Hanna Hinshaw echoed the sentiments, “We all really get along and it shows on the soccer field. We play well together and work hard at trying to get better as a team. Our goal is to be the best that we can be.” Goalkeeper Alex Reibel adds, “At the beginning of the season, Coach Beasley told us that our number one goal is to be a great teammates, and I feel like we have really embraced that.” With a second place finish in the state final last year, the Lady Tigers are focused on a long post-season for this year as well. “I’m hoping this season will last as long as it possibly can,” Peebles says, a sentiment shared by the entire team. According to Peebles, their goals aren’t to win every game, a No. 1 ranking, or to win the state championship. Their objective is to work as hard as they possibly can, to push themselves and their teammates to the maximum, and to be great teammates on and off the field. “We have some tough competition, but we are certainly capable of great things this year,” co-captain Kylie Hohlt says. “And last season, we really enjoyed the journey as much as the result.” But now it is back to business, and with a state ranking of No. 2, the Tigers have a lot of work to do. The seniors have all loved their four years playing at FHS. “I feel so grateful and blessed to have gotten to be a part of a team like this,” Peebles says. “During the past four years the FHS soccer program stretched me and grew me and allowed me to join a family. I’m more competitive than most people, and every game I want to win so badly, but I’ve realized over these four years that it is so much more than winning and losing, and after graduation, that’s what I’ll remember.”
With only six seniors on varsity, don’t underestimate years to come. Coach Beasley is building a strong team. Depth is a term that describes the rest of the team. And in addition to the juniors and sophomores, they had 60 freshmen come to tryouts. “We have a lot of developing talent,” Beasley says. Look for the Lady Tigers to be roaring for a long time to come.

Harvest Wine by the Light of the Moon
Writer / Laurie Quinn . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
September 6 was a beautiful, clear night and romance was in the air, as the Historic Ambassador House and Heritage Gardens hosted its annual Harvest Wine Tasting. With more than 300 attendees, wonderful wines, various activities and numerous auction items to bid on, the night was set to be a success! If you have ever been to the Ambassador House, you can envision the white lights dangling from the gazebo and the stars shining through on the beautiful night. This created the perfect backdrop for Patrick Feeney, who planned to ask the love of his life, Amanda Stephens, to spend the rest of her life by his side, hand in hand in marriage. The horse-drawn carriage, which was a new addition at the event this year, came around to the front of the Ambassador House and picked the couple up just like it did other attendees of the event. Patrick and Amanda were talking casually when Patrick turned to
her and said, “I have a question I want to ask you. I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” Amanda giggles when asked how she responded. “It took me awhile to believe it was happening!” After she said yes and the ring was on her finger, she let it sink in that she was going to be a bride. Fortunately for the happy couple, one of the activities required an on-site photographer, who was able to capture the moment fresh out of the carriage! The Feeneys have started a family tradition of having the Ambassador House be a part of their lives. One of the first large weddings there was held by Patrick’s sister. Best of luck to Patrick and Amanda as they plan their wedding! If you would like more information on the Ambassador House or would like to plan an event there, contact Beth Clark, Curator and Program Coordinator, at bethm@ ambassadorhouse.org.

When Luke Andritsch was diagnosed at age 3 with leukemia, the little things in life became much more important. “We just started saving pennies. They just seemed like good luck,” said Vicky Andritsch, Luke’s mother. Today, Luke is a healthy 11-year-old boy and the inspiration behind Team Luke, a local children’s cancer charity. Recently, the pennies that the family collected were installed onto the floor of the home office by Luke and his father, Todd. More than 56,000 pennies now serve as a permanent reminder of the love, support, prayers and even luck that the Andritsch family will forever feel.
