Scott and Aunna Fadness are relaxed and easy going, ready to talk. Given the last 12 months of their life, that demeanor is a pleasant surprise. One year ago from September, Scott and Aunna began Scott’s campaign for mayor in the town where he has worked since 2006, Fishers. “The last 12 months have been a bit actionpacked,” Scott confessed. “The choice to run for mayor was Scott’s and we have just rolled with it,” Aunna agreed. Scott, 32, and Aunna, 31, moved to Fishers in 2007, a year after Scott began an internship and commuted from Bloomington. Scott and Aunna inevitably were drawn to call Fishers their home. The build up to the primary last spring was a crazy time, and exciting in another way. During the busiest part of the race, Aunna discovered she was expecting. The couple withheld this bit of news from the public until after the primary. To top it off, their due date is mid-November, just after the main election. Scott Fadness is a bit of a reluctant politician. Since 2006, he has held several different job titles within the town, learning as much as he can about each department along the way.

Growing up on a farm in North Dakota in a town with a population of 2,200, Scott’s parents, Deb and Bruce Fadness, were surprised that he adapted so well to bigger city living. They were not surprised, however, by Scott’s soon to be new title of mayor. Working out in the fields with his dad and grandfather, Scott learned every aspect of their farm through hands-on experience. They know this is where Scott gleaned his work ethic.
Scott is in the right place at the right time. But what if the baby decides the right time to arrive is on Election Day? “That is easy. I am with my wife and son. They are forever, the office isn’t,” says Scott. He has his priorities straight. Kara Reibel lives in the Geist area with her family. In addition to writing, she owns Geist Pilates.
Frequently on ride-alongs with Fishers police officers, or helping plow the streets in the middle of the night, Scott continues to spend time with all departments. “I love the job of town manager. This is where my passion is. When the people voted to approve Fishers becoming a city in 2011, I had not realized that it meant I would lose my job,” Fadness said. “I ultimately decided to run for office so that I wouldn’t leave the team that I have loved being a part of.” Fadness earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of North Dakota. “I thought I would be a third generation farmer,” he said. Apparently he was guided down a different path. He knew he wanted to get a master’s degree in public affairs from Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs which is at the top of the list of schools, next to Harvard. When Fadness’ parents flew down to see him in Bloomington, he drove them around to let them get a feel for the city. “When you drive in downtown Bloomington and surrounding areas, you get an immediate feel for what Bloomington is all about. That is the feel I want to create in Fishers,” said Scott of his vision for the newly found city. The move to Indiana would prove prophetic for not only his career path, but most importantly this is where he met Aunna. Aunna is from a small, unincorporated area in northwestern Indiana called Union Mills, which has a population of 2,212. She graduated from South Central High School, located in southern La Porte County. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Purdue, she earned a master’s degree in Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, as well. She works for an environmental engineering company.

Both Scott and Aunna share a passion for giving back. Scott is on the Board for the Hamilton County Humane Society. They volunteer with the American Red Cross and for Alternatives, the women’s shelter in Anderson. They are also on the committee to fund a shelter in Hamilton County. Both are young, dynamic and easy-going, which are all needed characteristics for the job at hand. Fishers has witnessed more than its fair share of growth and change in the last 25 years. Interestingly enough, a farm boy from North Dakota is leading us through the bulk of this shift. Given Scott and Aunna’s background and adaptability for change, their small town, country upbringing has perfectly prepared this couple for what lies ahead.

ndy Premier comprises of the combination of three travel programs: the Noblesville Soccer Club, the Fishers Soccer Club and the Indianapolis Premier Soccer Club.
“We merged to combine the best training experience for our players,” General Manager Jamie Wood said. This merger also opened the doors for players outside the Fishers and Noblesville areas to tryout for their teams. “We have expanded our programming and opened up the opportunity to allow players from surrounding communities to play at the various levels within our club,” Wood said. Wood, who had been the director of coaching for the Fishers Soccer Club for the past five years before stepping into the general
manager role, has seen the travel programs double in participation. Under Indy Premier, the number of travel participants has grown exponentially. “We credit our professional coaching staff and the positive experience that they give to the players,” says Wood. Wood grew up in central England and played professionally for Oldham Athletic. He played for the English Premier League club for three years before being sidelined with a spinal injury. “Today’s medicine would have probably seen me miss a season, but then it was career-ending,” Wood said. But soccer is his life, so he began coaching. “I worked to stay close to the game that I love,” he said. Indy Premier has the largest and highest licensed full-time coaching staff in the state that are dedicated to developing young players. “We have worked hard to
improve our quality of coaching and level of competition,” states Wood. Almost all of the coaching staff played soccer at the collegiate level, several having professional experience like Wood. All of the coaching staff is committed to the players, with a couple notable additions that are still players themselves. Indy Premier has recently added two new coaches from the Indy Eleven, forward Mike Ambersley and goalkeeper Kristian Nicht. Ambersley, celebrating his homecoming to Indiana, scored the first goal of the club’s inaugural season. As a standout at IU who won two national titles, he feels very much at home. “Playing at IU had a big influence on my decision to sign with Indy Eleven. I have always considered Indiana my second home and my wife, Lauren and I are really enjoying our time here as a family,” says Ambersley.

Scoring the first goal for the Indy Eleven came just a day after Ambersley’s wife and newborn son were released from the hospital. “George was born on that Tuesday leading up to the game so needless to say I did not have much sleep going into that game. It was the best distraction I have ever had! When my career is over and George is old enough to understand what I did, I can look back on that night with him and tell him that goal was for him,” Ambersley said. Goalkeeper Kristian Nicht began his professional career playing in the Bundesliga, a top-flight league in Germany. Nicht was the first player signed for the Indy Eleven squad, creating a strong defensive foundation. Nicht has been thrilled with the fan support. “The excitement for a whole new team is extraordinary here,” Nicht said. “I really like living in Indiana, it
is a very relaxed place with a very nice downtown and outskirts.” And most importantly, home to a throng of soccer fans. Both Ambersley and Nicht enjoy giving back to the game of soccer. Becoming trainers with Indy Premier was a natural fit for both professional athletes. “I have learned so much during my time at IU and playing professionally for nine years. I want to share my knowledge of the game with the youth and what better way than to coach young kids who are willing to learn,” Ambersley said. Nicht shared the sentiment, “I had some very good mentors in my youth career and now I feel it is my calling to be that mentor to young goalkeepers.” For information on Indy Premier, visit indypremiersc.org.

When you “THINK SNOW!” you should conjure up images of the Indianapolis Ski Club. While Indianapolis may not be synonymous with snow skiing, there is a group of nearly 300 snow enthusiasts who are members of the Indianapolis ski club. The club has been in existence for almost 60 years and still promotes friendships and great ski trips! Fellow skier and Lawrence resident Joan Naffziger has been a member of the club since 1992 and has been a volunteer “go-to” person on several trips. “It’s so much fun traveling with a group of fellow skiers and friends.” Naffziger said, “It makes it much more bearable when you get stuck in a blizzard in Minneapolis, too!” This year the Indianapolis Ski Club has six trips planned for the upcoming season in the western United States and Europe. In January, they kick off their line up of trips at Banff in Alberta, Canada. Trips to SteamBoat, Winter Park and Beaver Creek in Colorado are scheduled in February. Also a European trip is planned to Cortina, Italy, and Madonna di Campiglio, a popular ski resort in Northeast Italy, scheduled for March 2015. en years ago, Sue Zilisch peered out of her Broad Ripple home and thought, “This neighborhood is ripe for a home tour, one that celebrates the history of the community through the stories of its houses.” So—Sue and a small army of friends “accosted” home owners and scheduled the first “Bungalows of Broad Ripple” tour. As researchers conducted interviews and delved into abstracts of titles, city directories and genealogical sites to bring out the stories that were hidden within the walls of the tour homes, the name soon morphed into the Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour. This year’s celebratory event (Saturday, September 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.) features a home that appeared on the first tour—its claim to fame being that it was a Sears “kit home.” For many years, the Sears Roebuck Company offered floor plans and building materials to prospective home owners. Building components—from lumber to nails—were numbered and shipped to the customer, who either hired a contractor or took on the task himself. Another feature of this year’s tour is the recently opened Broad Ripple Hotel. A late 1880s brick house and an early 20th century bungalow have been tied together to form a charming boutique hotel. teve Cooke of Noblesville is one of countless Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience success stories.
The sixth annual event, sponsored by Central Indiana Ford Dealers, is Sept. 20 and 21 at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Admission is free, as are parking and all activities. Cooke attended the first event in 2009 with the goal of learning about fly-fishing. He took a brief lesson and was hooked. He followed up with professional lessons from Patti Beasley of Reel Women-Reel Men fly club in Indianapolis. He now fishes the White River in Central Indiana for panfish and Brookville Lake’s tailwaters on the Whitewater River in southeastern Indiana for trout.
Although fly-fishing is not part of this year’s event, about 50 other outdoor activities will be offered by some 120 grassroots organizations. All activities take place in the 1,700-acre state park. Activities available will range from archery to mountain biking and more.
Information on trolley routes, a listing of all events and directions to parking areas can be found at HoosierOutdoorExperience. IN.gov. While it’s not required, visitors are encouraged to register at the website before they attend. This helps in planning the event.
Trolleys from the State Fair roll through the grounds, and activities are clustered to make each stop action-packed.
The programming is essentially the same both days. Participants are welcome to come either or both days.

“Fly-fishing is my outlet,” Cooke said. “I like the serenity of being in nature.” Organized by the Department of Natural Resources and Indiana Natural Resources Foundation, this is Indiana’s largest handson outdoor recreation event. Last year a record 32,000 people participated. The idea is to get more Hoosiers interested in outdoor recreation. The concept came about because nationwide participation rates in many traditional outdoor sports have been declining. In Indiana, the number of licensed hunters and anglers has remained relatively stable over the past few decades. This sounds comforting, said Bourke Patton, director of the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation, until you consider that the number hasn’t kept pace with the state’s overall population growth. Conservationists worry that if the trend isn’t reversed, fewer Americans will care about protecting natural resources. “The whole point is to get people to embrace the outdoors,” Patton said. “It’s about taking people who have little outdoor knowledge, or even no outdoor knowledge, and showing them what’s available and how to do it.”

One survivor, Jennifer Spees, expressed her interests and passion for the event. “I will celebrate five months cancer free on Aug. 19,” Spees said. “I was 44 when diagnosed, in the best shape of my life, as I was training for my first marathon. I had no history of breast cancer, and my genetic testing was negative. I have two daughters who now know a great deal about breast cancer and are advocates for a cure. They were two of my biggest cheerleaders throughout chemo, surgery and radiation. Having cancer, I knew I had to show them that you can do anything and be strong doing it! I would love to teach the girls another life lesson, that no matter how tall or how
much hair you have, you can be a model and be proud of yourself. I would like to be considered for the Project Pink Fashion show to send a message to my girls and the world you can do anything. Changing it up from last year’s Geist route, this year’s Rollfast Gran Fondo ride will take place in Carmel on September 14. Whether a weekend enthusiast or a seasoned competitor, any cyclist who is at least 12 years old can participate in this fun, massstart ride. “Everyone rolls out together, but it’s not a race,” said event organizer Matt Tanner. He explains the ride is for Lycra- and cargo-short-wearing participants alike. “If you can ride around your neighborhood a few times, you can handle this ride.”
Choosing the VIP entry option gets you extra pampering on the day of the event. VIPs receive reserved parking, VIP tent access, and unlimited food and drinks for the day. Three top professional cyclists, George Hincapie, Christian Vande Velde, and Tom Danielson are scheduled to appear at the event.
Following the ride, cyclists and families can participate in the free festival. The Union Brewing Company is adding to the fun atmosphere by giving each participant a free beer or soft drink. For more information and entry fee schedule, go to rollfastfondo.com
The three routes start near Union Brewing Company, go past Cicero, west toward Lebanon, and south through Zionsville. Beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m., the routes are clearly marked, and course marshals are on hand to provide assistance. “We’ve provided three supported routes: the Piccolo, a 25-mile route, the Medio, which is the 65-mile route, and the Gran—the longest—at 100 miles,” said Tanner. “This year, we have more rest stops to provide support for riders,” said Tanner. “The Medio and the Gran have six stops, and the piccolo has four.” The last stop is a sweet stop five miles from the finish for an extra boost of energy to help riders cross the finish line. Cyclists can challenge themselves to complete the race in a certain amount of time. Each cyclist receives an entry number to attach to his or her handlebars. A microchip is located on the underside of the number. When the rider passes the start line, the ride time begins; when the rider crosses the finish line, it stops. Rider times are posted in real time on the event’s website. “Last year’s event drew participants from all over Indiana and neighboring states—a few came from London. We had about 300 cyclists participate last year, and we’re hoping to grow to around 500,” Tanner said.

RIVER GLEN COUNTRY CLUB FUNDRAISER BENEFITS KIDNEY CAMP Writer / Beth Taylor
On June 27, the River Glen Country Club swim team held its annual philanthropic fundraiser. This year’s event had special meaning for the swim team, because the money was raised in honor of one of its own team members. After learning about 10-year-old Emma Hubbard’s recent diagnosis of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN), an autoimmune disease that affects the kidneys, the swim team coach, Doug White, approached the Hubbard family about donating the proceeds from this year’s fundraiser to the National Kidney Foundation. During Emma’s treatment at Riley Hospital for Children, Jenny Hubbard, Emma’s mom, learned about the NKF’s Kidney Camp program. She asked White to consider channeling the fundraiser proceeds to the camp. River Glen pool manager Stephanie Thompson and the River Glen community embraced the idea that its 90-member summer swim team could help send especially deserving children to summer camp. “Our swimmers raise money per lap or by lump sum, and the fundraiser was personal this year because of Emma. We’ve
raised over $1,500 for Kidney Camp,” said Thompson. Kidney Camp takes place at Camp Tecumseh, near Brookston, Indiana. “For one week, these kids aren’t patients, they’re campers, just like any other child; they get to experience normal childhood camp activities such as swimming, rock climbing, archery, canoeing, and even zip-lining,” said Tricia Behringer, program manager for the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana. The camp is free for kids with kidney diseases, as well as for those who have received transplants. To manage their illnesses while at camp, portable dialysis machines, medications and necessary treatments are transported to the camp facility. For patients who need in-patient care, transportation is provided to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis.
The program is in its tenth year and hosts around 40 campers, ages 8-18, each summer. “Financial contributions, such as those from the River Glen fundraiser, make it possible for us to create the camp experience for these remarkable kids. We’re truly thankful!” added Behringer. The Hubbard family feels grateful for the support they have received from the River Glen community. “Emma’s condition is currently being managed with medication, and we’re so appreciative and humbled that River Glen and the swim team wanted to help provide support for Kidney Camp,” said Jenny Hubbard.
“The week of relief for the parents is also wonderful. Many of them drive from hours away and make sacrifices to come to Riley for treatment, often several times a week. To know that their kids are safe and having fun brings such peace of mind,” Behringer said. “The kids feel safe and know that they won’t be made fun of here, because all the kids are familiar with the treatments,” explained Behringer.

But what is also evident is the love she has for every one of her students. “My clients were used to sitting on my couch, chatting with each other before and after class. I didn’t want to take that feel of my business away,” Desserich said. The personal attention she pays her clients has paid off in many ways. “Many of my clients did not know each other before working out with me and now are dear friends,” she added. As a former seventh grade special education teacher, Leah Desserich put her students first. That meant she always adjusted her teaching style to each student’s special needs or concerns. This training has served her well as a Pilates instructor because each client deserves personalized care and everyone starts at different fitness levels. The former gymnast never envisioned herself as an owner of a Pilates studio and yet everything about her previous training helped make Just Breathe Pilates a successful business even before she opened the studio door in July 2014. As Desserich looked for a way to stay fit, she stumbled upon a class at the Fishers Y that introduced her to Pilates. Soon, Desserich was completing her certification and training clients in her home.
While Pilates is the main attraction, the studio offers YoPi, TRX and yoga. In addition to online scheduling, the studio offers a “scheduling app” that allows you to schedule from the convenience of your smart phone. Desserich offers a two-week unlimited trial for $30 for first time students. In addition to new instructors, the studio now offers massage therapy from licensed massage therapist and Fishers resident, Laura Graham. Graham was introduced to massage therapy in Hawaii by a Japanese holistic healer who encouraged her to continue training in massage therapy. Now certified in Swedish massage, reflexology and esthetics, Graham is offering new clients a 60-minute massage special for $45 in September and October. he St. George Festival will be held September 12-13 for the first time at the new location of St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 10748 East 116th Street in Fishers. The church sponsored the Middle Eastern Festival for 17 years at its prior location in Indianapolis, and the newly revamped festival builds on that Middle Eastern heritage, offering many popular features of previous events.
“We’re still celebrating our Middle Eastern roots, but at the same time we’re expanding the format,” explains Brad Tirey, festival director. “In the past, it’s been just food, drink and dance. We are adding other activities, demonstrations, cultural events and more attractions for youth, including hot air balloons and a carnival area.” Why change the name of the festival? Parish priest Father Nabil Hanna says, “We want to honor the various other traditions of all the people who have joined and make up St. George today. We are extremely diverse. We have people of backgrounds from many countries across the world.” What’s different about this festival? “Two things,” says Fr. Nabil. “One is that it’s at our new location on 116th Street with a new
Byzantine temple and beautiful iconography. The Indianapolis Star called it ‘the number one thing to see or do in Fishers this summer.’ We are inviting everybody to come and celebrate with us.” Tours will explain the church’s unique architecture, as well as iconography that was recently installed by renowned iconographer Dr. George Kordis of the University of Athens, Greece. “Secondly, we are trying to make the festival a little more interactive; not to just come, buy food and sit down with music playing in the background. You are able to move around, see different things, different demonstrations—try out different things while you are here,” explains Fr. Nabil. What’s going to be the same as previous festivals? “Fantastic food, live entertainment and all of the welcoming people of St. George who want our guests to see what we’re about,” says Brad Tirey. “We hope to continue the spirit of hospitality for which we have become known.” Festival hours are 5-11 p.m. on Friday, September 12 and from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday, September 13. Free admission. Offsite parking is available for $5 at Fall Creek Community Church, 10401 East 116th Street (within walking distance). Shuttle buses will run throughout the festival. Due to festival activities, parking at the St. George lot will not be available.
About St. George Orthodox Christian Church St. George Orthodox Church was established in 1926 and ministers to Orthodox Christians of a great diversity of backgrounds. It is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. After worshipping together for more than 50 years at its prior location on Sherman Drive, the parish purchased land in Fishers and built a new Byzantine-style church building. ou know her from her smiling face on the evening news on Fox 59. Fanchon Stinger co-anchors at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., delivering the news with plenty of ease and in a straightforward, no-nonsense, relaxed style.
Don’t let that laid back demeanor fool you, our northern neighbor is a 13-time Emmy award-winning anchor/journalist, who has forged a career centered on making a difference in community around her. Stinger sees her television news job as a way to give back. She enjoys contributing to the positive growth of the community with the emphasis on the success of central Indiana young people.
“I kept seeing the ‘317’ area code pop up on my phone,” Fanchon said. “I said who could that be? I don’t know anyone in that area code.” It was Fox 59 calling, and the rest is history. Fanchon and her husband lived on Geist for a couple of years where they enjoyed boating. “Water centers me,” Fanchon said. “Maybe it’s my Michigan background, but I love the water.” Today the couple resides in the Westfield area to be closer to the Fox 59 studios. Fanchon enjoys spending time with her husband and puppy “Arie,” an adorable beagle mix that she posts photos of on Facebook.
Stinger works with several anti-bullying initiatives in Central Indiana aimed at encouraging positive self-esteem and character enforcement in and outside of the classroom.
“Someone stopped me the other day and instead of saying, “Are you Fanchon Stinger? they said, ‘are you Arie’s mom?’” she said with a laugh.
She also spends a lot of her free time mentoring young people through their academic years and professionally.
For now, Arie is the couple’s only child, but they do hope to have children someday, as well.
A goal of hers is to spend time with homeless teenagers in our city.
In the meantime, Fanchon will be anchoring another new newscast on Fox 59 this fall and as always, she seems to take it all in stride.
Fanchon, which is French for “freedom,” was born and raised in Detroit. Her parents were educators who sent her and her sister to private schools growing up and always taught them they have gifts to give back. She attended the University of Michigan and became interested in television news. She was a natural in the newsroom— moving up from a paid intern position to a reporter, then to an anchor job.
“It’s all about time management and prioritizing,” she says with a smile. “God comes first, then family, then business.” Watch for Fanchon Stinger on the new 7 p.m. newscast in late September and learn more at Fox59.com.
