FISHERS WELCOMES THE NICKEL PLATE PLAYERS Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The Nickel Plate District Amphitheater will see something new this summer: a musical! Fishers Arts Council member Ashton Wolf proposed bringing theater to Fishers, and this summer will see an exciting show added to the calendar of civic activities: Beehive will debut July 19. “Where there’s culture, there’s commerce, and where you have that, a city will thrive,” states Wolf, a dynamic performer who has performed all over the country and on Royal Caribbean cruises. He moved to Fishers several years ago with his family. He performs all over the world, writes music and has written original musical scores, as well. As a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC, Wolf states that his “first love is theater.” He is sharing this love of theater with Fishers this summer. The initial support for this new venture, which has been overwhelmingly positive, is a clear indication of future success. Fishers Parks and Recreation is really excited with the development of the Nickel Plate Players. “The Nickel Plate Amphitheater opened in fall of 2012 with hopes of groups forming that would call it home,” says Parks Director Tony Elliot, “and we hope that this first theatrical performance is just the beginning of something big for the Nickel

Plate Players.” Fishers has been thrilled with the initial success of other groups such as Fishers Music Works.

summer. An accomplished, self-taught pianist and composer, Wolf has written the arrangements for the musical score.

The enthusiasm is palpable. Fishers Arts Council President Jocelyn Vare is thrilled to have the FAC be a key sponsor for the Nickel Plate Players. “This is an exciting development for our community,” says Vare.

Cast member Alicia Hamaker, who was on hand for some photos and is looking forward to the production, states, “We are having a blast in rehearsal. This will be a fun show!” Other cast members include Becky Lee Macy, Carrie Barnthouse, Kelli McCrary, Tiffanie Bridges, Tracy Friddle, Lori Vella Hayes and Jocelyn Vare. Choreography is provided by Barbara F. Cullen. WISH-TV 8 morning anchor Lauren Lowry will make a special guest appearance in Beehive.

Echoing the theme of enthusiasm is the master of ceremonies, Onis Dean. Dean lends his voice to open Beehive with a couple of hit songs and is excited about working with the Nickel Plate Players. “It’s a wonderful honor to be included in a new and growing group,” he says. Ashton Wolf and his wife, co-producer Sandy Thorne, held auditions seeking triple-threat performers—ones who can sing, dance, and act. Beehive is an all-female cast, aside from the master of ceremonies, featuring some top local talent. “We are utilizing the Nickel Plate Amphitheater to its fullest potential in hopes that the musical will be well-received,” says Wolf. Recently finishing an original musical, Ten Pin Alli, which he co-wrote with Daina De Prez and co-produced with his wife, Wolf shares his talent and experience with the Nickel Plate Players. “Starting the Nickel Plate Players is an exciting venture to a growing city like Fishers,” states Wolf, who hopes to expand for next

Beehive is a high-voltage, fast-paced, lighthearted look back at the girl groups of the ‘60s, featuring hit songs like “Proud Mary”, “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.”, “Where the Boys Are,” “Natural Woman”, and many more. Providing the musical accompaniment are musicians from Fishers Music Works, including pianist Nancy Matt. “This is an exciting production to bring to our local stage,” says Matt. The generous sponsors of the Nickel Plate Players include: Fishers Parks & Recreation, Fishers Arts Council, Fishers Music Works, The Ambassador House and Nickel Plate Arts. Beehive is a free show for the entire family, so mark your calendars now for this fun event on July 19!

2MARINES LAWN & LANDSCAPE

Writer / Danie Leever Photographer / Brian Brosmer

When you call 2Marines Lawn and Landscape, you’re greeted like a longtime friend. Owner Julian Hodges, SGT. USMC (Ret.), has all of his clients saved in his phone just as his inner circle of friends would be, and you’re treated as such from the moment you become a valued client. “I’m a stickler for quality control; the work has to be meticulous,” he said of his Angie’s List Super Service Award–winning company. Fewer than 5 percent of all companies meet the strict eligibility requirements to be considered for the prestigious award, which has been presented to the local business for five years in a row.

2Marines, an American owned and operated company based in Fishers, Indiana and in business since 2009, prides itself on being an “all-American company” employing veterans of the armed forces and hard working citizens to install breathtaking landscapes and deliver top-notch commercial and residential property management. From lawn mowing and fertilization, to the most intricate of landscapes, 2Marines has you covered! Julian continues his endless pursuit of greater expertise through Purdue University, which helps keep him fluent in all things related to his profession. With nearly two decades of experience in landscape and property management, his broad knowledge rivals that of his

passion for the community and unwavering dedication to his country. Julian proudly served nearly seven years in the United States Marine Corps as a machine gunner, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He is honored and humbled to have taken part in America’s Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). In 2006 his unit received orders to deploy to Iraq, where they fought daily for seven and a half months, consequently taking heavy casualties while reclaiming the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, Iraq. In 2010 he was medically retired. “I am proud and blessed to have served with some of the most heroic, brave and patriotic men America has to offer— truly our nation’s finest,” said Hodges.

“Keep America Green…Hire a Marine!” The hardworking veteran comes from a long line of military servicemen including his grandfather, father and brother, Christopher Hodges, who is also a decorated United States Marine combat infantryman. Julian truly recognizes the many sacrifices our military, police, firefighters and their families make daily to keep us safe. 2Marines doesn’t just say they are grateful, they continue to show their gratitude by offering a 10% discount on all services to active military personnel, veterans and first responders. They also offer a 5% senior citizen discount.

The veteran says staying heavily involved in day-to-day operations helps keep his small business at a level of service above and beyond a large corporation. “Being so involved keeps me accountable to my customers.” Knowing the clients well, having pride in a job well done and a desire to retain clients year after year makes 2Marines a business that stays competitive against larger landscaping corporations that may not have the ability to maintain such a high “inspection-ready” type of quality control. Fishers residents have many landscaping businesses to choose from, but Julian is confident that people are willing to pay for a high level of integrity and service. “We bring so much more than just landscaping to the table. Our traditional, all-American values are what really set us apart from the competition.” Whether it’s a large landscape project to help beautify an otherwise drab yard, weekly lawn maintenance or managing a sprawling commercial property, 2Marines Lawn & Landscape, LLC is a local business that will work hard to make you proud. “Keep America Green… Hire a Marine!”

Prom season is behind us for this year, but next year, is right around the corner. The Fishers Police Department and Fishers Fire Department work together every year to show the students at HSE & FHS a brief yet valuable peek at the end results of choosing to drink and drive. The student actors who participate in this reenactment play the roles of the victims of a drunk driver car accident. Creating a realistic scene of a car crash on prom night is an event that the Fishers Police Department and Fishers Fire Department put on for the safety of the youth here in Fishers. With the help of IU Hospital, school administrators, and members of the community, the fire and police departments have one goal in mind: “to deter students from making bad decisions. Whether attending a prom or a regular party, please drive safely, make wise decisions, and never drink and drive!

The goals of this master plan are to create and improve connectivity of trails and paths from neighborhoods to key destinations. David George, Fishers Town Council member, spoke to me about his mission to make Fishers a “rideable community. In the plans is a path/trail that creates a 3- to 3.5-mile loop around downtown Fishers. From this loop, the plan is to add on nearby neighborhoods so families can ride their bikes down to watch a free concert at the Nickel Plate Amphitheater or just go out for a family bike ride for some fresh air and exercise. Big plans such as this one require planners. This is where Rundell Ernstberger Associates, LLC and Toole Design Group come into the picture to share their expertise and lend a hand to the Town of Fishers. She has gathered a talented group of planners, engineers and landscape architects to assist her vision of providing creative and realistic solutions to communities. A fun fact about Toole Design Group is that more than 80 percent of their staff bike, walk or use public transit to get to work every day. The Town of Fishers has two employees heavily involved in this project: Sue Harrison and Corey Pressler. Sue works for the planning department and is drafting the Master Plan. Corey is with the Engineering Department and is involved in the design and construction of all trails. SUMMER CONCERT LINEUP PREVIEW Writer / Christy Watson

Will it be cowboy hats and boots, black T-shirts and jeans, or coconut bras and leis that don your arrival at Klipsch Music Center this summer? Are camping for Dave Matthews and date night for ZBB (Zac Brown Band) or Luke Bryan marked on your calendar, as well? The 2014 concert season is underway for yet another spectacular and diverse lineup that gets many area residents’ heart rates aflutter this time of year. Having just celebrated 25 years as a successful and nationally recognized “Best Music Venue,” the changes just don’t stop when it comes to improving the concert experience at KMC. Going head to head with mother nature during the off season, construction of a new bar in the venue’s south plaza and a new program that provides guests the opportunity to purchase a table for individual shows are just an example of the first class service this venue strives to give its guests. “The concept is that guests can experience wait-free service throughout their visit,

and their own reserved table. The bar will be in a great location so it’s close to just about everything,” says Andrew Newport, the GM for North American Concerts and Live Nation, who is celebrating his own 15-year milestone, working at the venue. “Healthier food options and locally grown produce and meat from responsibly raised animals is another very cool program being offered that allows us to support the community while offering better products to the fans,” offers Newport. The variety of talent this year is unsurpassed, with some rock ‘n’ roll heavy-hitters headed this way, from seasoned acts like Journey/Steve Miller, to Kiss and Def Leppard, to the farewell tour of Motley Crüe and Alice Cooper. Everybody’s favorite Caribbean crooner, Jimmy Buffett, returns June 26 while his Parrothead fans are busy preparing for their extravagant tailgate parties. Country music has made its way into the hearts of many and the evolution of the Country Mega Ticket has made it easier for patrons to catch the boot-

stomping, hip-shaking talent of acts like Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and Lady A, to name a few. Camping at Klipsch will be offered for the two-day Luke Bryan event in late August. The season will round out in September with Toby Keith and the resonant sound of Dierks Bentley. Never to deny the showcase of newer talent and tastes, Klipsch excitedly will welcome OneRepublic/The Script, Wiz Khalifa’s Under the Influence of Music Tour, and Kings of Leon. With nearly all of the venue’s boxes sold out for the season, a great way to see the shows is through the VIP program that allows purchasers to take advantage of a private parking lot, access to the VIP Club and Lounge, as well as access to exclusive seats. Season seat and series seat packages are also still available. Whatever your tastes in music, be sure not to let those summer nights slip by without a visit to Klipsch Music Center, and meet up with about 23,999 of your soon-to-be closest friends.

ABA AUTISM SERVICES BY DAMAR 9905 Fall Creek Road DamarAba.org / 317-813-4690

‘WHATEVER IT TAKES’ & A HALF-CENTURY OF EXPERTISE While it might seem like a new ABA clinic opens every day in the Indianapolis area, ABA Autism Services by Damar stands out from the crowd. It’s the only one that can back up its ABA services with decades of experience meeting the needs of people with autism in Central Indiana. And it’s the only one that can draw from a full spectrum of professional services – from in-home support to residential care – to assist families. Most telling, perhaps, it’s also the only ABA clinic that carries the Damar name, a name nationally associated with leadership in helping people dealing with autism and other developmental challenges. Established on Indianapolis’ southwest side in 1967, Damar has helped thousands of Central Indiana children and adults confront and overcome issues associated with autism. After nearly five decades of pioneering treatment, in 2013, Damar opened its ABA services location on Indianapolis’ northeast side. ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is recognized as the bestpractice treatment for children with autism, helping them address challenges with communication, social interaction, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Damar matches this proven approach with a “whatever it takes” promise and a focus on putting the family’s needs first. And, as a nonprofit organization that accepts Medicaid and private insurance, Damar serves families that otherwise might not have access to ABA services. “We work through barriers to make sure families get the services they need,” said Kristin McCoy, Director of ABA Autism Services by Damar. “If it’s a transportation problem, we work through that. If it’s a funding or scheduling problem, we work through that. And if a child needs something different, we have access to everything Damar offers.” In other words, even if ABA services are not what a child needs, Damar can help a family access the appropriate services – and back those with a half-century of expertise. atFishers.com / JUNE 2014 / FISHERS / 21

2014 FISHERS FREEDOM FESTIVAL OFFERS SOMETHING FUN FOR EVERYONE Writer / Janet C. Striebel

The 26th annual Fishers Freedom Festival will be held at Roy G. Holland Park (One Park Drive) on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29. This year’s events include a fun-filled agenda packed with traditional and new attractions that are sure to please all ages. This festival with over 50,000 attendees from all over the U.S. will host live music, fireworks, a 5K event, UFO Major Run Disc Dog Tournament, children/teen tents, dunk tank, water balloon launch, climbing wall, two parades, teen dance, street dance, and more. Plus, there will be arts & crafts sites, business booths, free game booths and food vendors. A wide range of activities will occur throughout the entire weekend and most events are held rain or shine. New this year are a zip line and photo booth, available

from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The zip line is 220′ long and 30′ tall. Participants will be asked to make a donation for this exciting experience. The viral photo booth allows patrons to immediately post their photos onto Facebook. “We need a lot of volunteers to make this event successful,” says Jennifer Kehl, Executive Director of Fishers Freedom Festival. “We especially need adult volunteers for the regional Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge. There are five obstacles highlighting basic skills and talents of firefighters. At any given regional competition, 75 to 175 competitors will participate in this challenge and spectator attendance is likely to reach 5,000 to 10,000 people throughout the competition. Without volunteers, this event would not be possible.”

The Fishers Parade and Festival, Inc., doing business as Fishers Freedom Festival, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that is independent from the Town of Fishers and the Fishers Chamber of Commerce. Kehl adds, “We hope to recruit more volunteers, sponsors and advertisers. The Town of Fishers supports this event with manpower and a generous donation.” The Business Tent offers free games for kids on Sunday. Arts & crafts vendors will be available with many hands-on activities such as face painting, crafts, and sand art. There will be food vendors on both days. On Saturday, the Entertainment Tent will host the Fishers Police Department and Hamilton County Law Enforcement K-9 demonstration at noon, Indiana Starfire Cloggers at 2 p.m. and Bullet Proof SoulBand at 3:45 p.m. The annual cook-off theme is fruit pies and all are welcome to

Back in 1989, the founders of the Fishers Parade and Festival decided to have a community gathering to celebrate Independence Day. With the help of volunteers, the event originated as a one-day community picnic, parade, and a few games for the children. Due to the overwhelming participation by the public, this event grew to a two-day event. The mission of the Fishers Freedom Festival is to encourage fellowship through civic partnerships and citizen involvement by creating a safe environment, developing needed community services, promoting family integrity and striving to improve the quality of life for every resident by investing in human potential. Jennifer Kehl says, “We welcome festival patrons to come enjoy a family-friendly environment. The Fishers Freedom Festival committee and I delight in planning and have a passion for this event in order to showcase our community spirit.”

compete. On Sunday, the Entertainment Tent will feature Chad Mills and The Upright Willies Band at noon, the Mudsock Jazz and Dixieland Band at 1 p.m. and G. Scotten Talent at 2:30 p.m. Limited parking is available at Holland Park for $5.00 per vehicle. Fishers Freedom Festival is offering

complimentary shuttle service to and from Holland Park and these areas: Fishers Municipal Complex, the grass area at the Alhuda Foundation at Lantern Road, Sunblest Blvd. and New Britton Elementary. Although the festival is dogfriendly, dogs are not permitted on shuttle buses or underneath any of the tents, and they must be on leashes.

Go to fishersfreedomfestival.org to see a more comprehensive schedule of this year’s events. For more information on volunteering or about the festival, please email info@fishersfreedomfestival.org, visit 8591 East 116th Street in Fishers or call 317-595-3195. elebrating their 33rd summer on the Prairie, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has created a dynamite line-up of weekend events. Since its inception, “Marsh Symphony on the Prairie” has been a smashing success according to patrons and musicians alike. With a portable art form like all major city orchestras, community outreach is important. The setting at Conner Prairie Interactive History Park provides the ideal summer venue for the ISO. Ellen Rosenthal, President and CEO of Conner Prairie, explains that the special relationship shared between the ISO and Conner Prairie has been “a successful, well-orchestrated partnership.” Conner Prairie is delighted to share its grounds with the ISO. Over the years, Symphony on the Prairie has become an intrinsic part of the summer schedule at Conner Prairie. Another essential element of this formula has been the consistently generous support of Marsh Supermarkets, which has sponsored the Symphony on the Prairie from the beginning. The 1982 inaugural summer concert series featured guest violinist Joshua Bell, then age 14. The Bloomington prodigy proudly began his long relationship with the ISO with that performance, which was his debut with a major symphony. Four thousand people were in attendance to listen to him accompany Tchaikovsky’s concerto.

Bell, always a popular featured violinist, is performing this summer with the ISO a couple weeks before the Prairie season begins. The first concerts of Marsh Symphony on the Prairie featured the ISO performing from inside a large tent. The clamshell amphitheater was added in the early ’90s. The addition of the Conner Prairie 1859 Balloon Voyage provides an exciting option for the concert enthusiast. Where else can you have the optional experience of listening to a musical performance from a tethered balloon high up in the air? Aside from the amphitheater and the Balloon Voyage, not much has changed since 1982 aside from the fashions. The sun still sets over the prairie, providing a relaxing backdrop to the melodious notes from the clamshell. “The Symphony on the Prairie is a classic picnic version of ‘glamping’ and is always in vogue with wines, cheeses, and assorted hors d’oeuvres enjoyed by patrons,” says Lisa Vielee, ISO marketing representative. Musicians appreciate their summers on the Prairie—especially John Wetherill, Principal Bassoonist and Fishers resident. “I certainly enjoy the commute,” says Wetherill. “Conner Prairie is a perfect setting for concerts. Kids get to run around while parents have the pleasure of enjoying a glass of wine.” And the symphony gets to wear khakis. The audience and musicians get to enjoy the casual

ambiance, which is romantic and relaxing. Both ISO musicians and other bands who take center stage for the summer nights love the setting. “It’s peaceful, it’s outdoors, and even though the weather may not always cooperate, it’s a lovely venue to perform in,” says Wetherill. The sentiment is echoed by the popular bands that make it an annual event.

The ISO then gets back to its roots with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, which features the dynamic Time for Three who have a new CD being released soon, as well as an international tour starting. Time for Three has gained international fame for their energetic, innovative interpretations. The popular string trio will exceed expectations with their version of Symphony No. 7.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS SEASON

Education will be celebrated during the Classic FM: Radio Hits of the Decades weekend with “College and Alumni Night.” Conductor Jack Everly, an IU alum, will be wearing his school colors, but which school? He also received an honorary doctorate from Franklin College, so he will have some wardrobe decisions to make—as will all the musicians celebrating the richness of musical education.

This is just the beginning of an exciting lineup that includes a fun weekend featuring the mastery of Brent Havens. Havens will conduct the Music of the Eagles and the Music of Led Zeppelin. He is known for his symphonic arrangements of the music of Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson and the Rolling Stones, to name a few. He has a talent for bringing out the best in the instruments and musicians through his unique musical scores. Brent Havens is also the mastermind behind the creation of a symphonic prairie mosh pit. No doubt the Eagles and Led Zeppelin arrangements will be met with fan approval.

This season celebrates the 7th year for Classical Mystery Tour. This Beatles cover band is one of the most popular cover bands. Not to be outdone, Swedish tribute band Waterloo will cover the best of ABBA. The John Denver Songbook and WWII veteran and popular musician Glenn Miller will be celebrated. A special concert weekend will bring the legendary band The Beach Boys to Conner Prairie’s stage. The Hit Men, which includes former members of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band wrap up the series.

The ISO kicks off the 33rd Annual Marsh Symphony on the Prairie June 20 with Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” That Saturday night will honor the Boy Scouts of America, who have tirelessly pulled wagons of picnic paraphernalia for patrons through the years.

This lineup offers an endless summer of amazing entertainment on the A perennial favorite, Star Spangled Symphony over the July 4th Prairie. With gratitude as the theme for their 33rd year, it seems, given holiday will be amped this season with special tributes honoring the this incredible schedule, we should be saying THANK YOU! men and women who have served our country. If you have served and are attending, wear your colors proudly!

GABBI SCHNAITER ON FIRE FOR THE TIGERS Google the name “Gabbi Schnaiter” and three pages of results apply to the Fishers High School Softball pitcher. Results with phrases like, “On Fire”; “Big arm swing and can really bring it”; and “Scoreless Innings” follow or include her name. And rightfully so. Gabbi gave up only three hits out of 33 batters for the highly combustible and competitive Fishers win over HSE at the May 9 Mudscock game.

to travel softball, and she is now a varsity stand-out at FHS—as a sophomore— already being recruited by Division 1 schools. She is as humble and grounded a kid as you will ever meet. And not just a one-sport wonder either; she continues to play travel softball at a collegiate showcase level, played club volleyball for Team Indiana for four years, and is also a member of the Lady Tiger JV Volleyball team.

Obviously the girl can throw the ball. After all, she says pitching is in her blood and as early as 9 months old was toted out to Arizona to watch her own dad pitch and catch in the men’s Senior League Baseball World Series. Yes, the girl can hit the ball, too, drawing spectators to watch her developing skills when she was as young as 8 years old. But it is her tenacious spirit and drive, sportsmanship and dedication to her sport and her family that single her out as one of the next big things to come out of the Fishers community.

“Gabbi is the real deal,” offers FHS Softball Coach Lauren Glaso. “She works just as hard on the off-season playing travel ball and lifting weights. She is buying into the process of knowing what it takes to make a good team great. She is selfless,” says Glasco. And apparently focused, as well, doing whatever it takes to juggle the lessons, practices and tournaments that encompass a minimum of 15-20 hours a week. Not to mention the homework this honor roll student often completes during drive time while also embracing her family responsibilities.

Gabbi traveled up through the ranks beginning with T-ball at age 4 to HSE S.P.O.R.T.S. and the natural progression

huge supporters, parents Sean and Raina Schnaiter. Sean was a collegiate pitcher and coach and is helping her navigate the waters of the opportunities that are being presented to her. Sean admits to being impressed with her maturity on the mound, while Raina gushes about the palpable unconditional love she shows to her three siblings, the youngest of whom is recovering from complications of autism. “She is truly their biggest fan and always wants to go to their games and be involved in the therapies and their lives. We are so happy for her and excited to be along for the ride on her amazing journey.” With the Lady Tigers’ record at 14-4 and the season in full swing, much is to be revealed, both for this team and for the future of #23, Gabbi Schnaiter. But this much is certain: her moral compass is set in the right direction. Hard work, time management, family values, good friends and an occasional stop at her favorite sushi joint make for a well-rounded daughter, student, and sister, and most remarkable softball sensation.

PROVIDING HEARING LOSS SOLUTIONS THAT IMPROVE DAILY LIVING Writer / LeeAnn Teagno Photos / Melissa Lawson, Bizzzeybee Photography

Marty Wood has a passion for clear, crisp hearing. The owner of Zounds of Fishers, a hearing center that opened this past June in Fishers, Wood knows personally of the struggles that hearing loss can cause. Wood, who started his profession in engineering and construction 38 years ago, decided it was time for something different. He wanted to help others hear better and he couldn’t be happier — not only with his career move, but also because he’s a satisfied Zounds customer. “I worked in construction, rode motorcycles, enjoyed woodworking and any number of other loud activities,” says Wood. “It had taken a toll on my hearing.” Wood got his hearing tested after he noticed that people often had to repeat things to him and that he had to keep turning up his TV’s volume. Years of being around heavy machinery and loud noises led to his hearing loss. Of his new Zounds hearing aids, he joked, “It’s great! My wife stopped yelling at me! I can hear her and the TV much better than I used to. The aids have also reduced my tinnitus.” Wood advised that, while he understands hearing aids are often viewed as something only used by senior citizens, everyone over age 25 should have their hearing tested once every five years at the very least — and more often for those who are seniors. “With all the technology out there — cellphones, ear buds and all the devices we place close to our ears — hearing loss is reaching epic proportions, even in younger 34 / FISHERS / JUNE 2014 / atFishers.com

of all, they’re rechargeable. The aids can run 18 or more hours on a charge, so there’s no inconvenient changing of batteries. They also have a convenient remote control so the user doesn’t need to touch the aids to adjust them. Of course, the price tag — $2,000 to $3,000 — is attractive too, as comparable aids sell for between $5,000 and $8,000.

folks,” he explained. “If someone has hearing loss, it’s best to know it and address it early for two reasons. First, the younger you are, the more readily you tend to adapt to something new like the use of a hearing aid, and second, so that any hearing loss can be addressed before it has been damaged so severely that they cannot be properly helped.” Wood said his customers have had nothing but praise for the innovative hearing aids. “They come in because they’re tired of changing batteries and experiencing problems with their traditional hearing aids. Once they try our aids, they’re sold. They love the convenience of them and the fact that they just work better in general.” So what makes the hearing aids that Zounds offers different from others? First

The hearing aids also address mild to severe hearing loss. They don’t just make things louder but rather focus on where the customer needs them most, whether high-, middle- or low-frequency ranges. They work so efficiently that many of Wood’s customers say they hear sounds they forgot even existed. “I had a customer tell me he thought his car had a problem when he heard the turn signal for the first time in years,” says Wood. “People forget what things sound like, and when they hear them again, they’re amazed.” Wood says that to have their hearing tested, customers typically make an appointment. Zounds offers free and comprehensive hearing consultations, which take about an hour to complete. Once complete, the customer’s audiogram, which is a graphical readout that explains what they hear and how well they hear it, is thoroughly reviewed. If the audiogram results warrant hearing help, a certified hearing specialist explains the available options in hearing

aids, taking as much time as customers need to understand how to use hearing aids and answering any questions they might have. Wood says it’s that personal touch that really sets Zounds apart on a customer service level. “We know that when our customers need a hearing aid, it needs to meet or exceed their needs. The only way we can do that is through an in-depth assessment of each customer’s lifestyle. It’s not just about hearing — it’s about hearing right,” says Wood. “Typically, a very active person needs different care than a person who’s not so active, so we work to really get to know our customers because we want them to be completely satisfied.” Wood added that customers get their hearing aids on the day they come in for their hearing evaluation, if they should need them. The aids are stocked in the office. Even those who don’t need hearing aids should protect their hearing, says Wood. He recommends hearing protection whenever you’re exposed to loud noise or extreme low or high frequencies. “Of course, preventing hearing loss is ideal,” he explained. “But when a hearing aid is needed, our clients really enjoy the ease of use and efficiency of the hearing aids at Zounds.”

The first morning, I woke up feeling like I was in a war zone! There was shouting everywhere and the rumble of Humvees rolling by. The faint light poured into our tent with a blurry figure yelling at us: “You’ve got 10 seconds: get your clothes and shoes on and get out. Wait for me at the field near the flagpole. Go! Go! I expect you to move fast, Troop 199.” I wiped my eyes and ran out the door to see the same thing left and right for other troops. It’s PT (or physical training); all the cadets were yelling, “What’s the best part about PT?” Our response was “It’s free!”

52nd ANNUAL WEST POINT CAMPOREE 2014 Writer / Turner Edwards Photographers / Mr. Heindricks & Mr. Studer

Last month I went to the West Point National Camporee, which is held every year in late April to early May. It is an invitational Camporee attended by Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other youth groups. For the past two years Troop 199 (my troop) has been the only Indiana troop to attend. We were invited because of Daniel Sprouse, a former member and Eagle Scout of Troop 199. He was also a student at Fishers High School. He was the commander this year, running and organizing the Camporee and

attendees. He is graduating soon from West Point as a second lieutenant. West Point is the U.S. Military Academy originally built as a revolutionary fort to defend New York and the Hudson Bay from invasion by British ships. The defenses included cannons and a 150-ton iron chain that could be raised across the river to stop ships from passing. It is the single longest operational military facility in the country. Graduates from West Point include Dwight D. Eisenhower, General George Patton and Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur also served as superintendent of the academy and presided over the movement to require better physical strength in cadets.

After a grueling PT, we headed out to the field to see a mock battle. There were airborne troops and ground troops fighting it out with blanks. It was really exciting! After that we set out for a day of adventure. We started at the first aid station and waited in line forever but when we got to the front it was awesome—it was like a real battle! We headed out as a squad. I led the group as commander and we used an arrowhead formation. However, the flaw was that we had no rear cover and one of our medics got shot. We tried to lay down and cover fire but it turned out we had a rogue sniper shooting backwards and got another man shot in the arm. I took the quick lead, like Rambo, with dual assault rifles and got the squad and the injured out. We applied tourniquets to the wounded and escaped danger. We continued through the day with many more exciting moments like eating MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) and coming a few seconds shy of the fire building at top speed contest. To sum this weekend up, it was an amazing weekend and our troop took home first place for the zodiac challenge. I highly recommend this trip as an activity for all troops!

“ We wanted to give something extra. It’s nice to write a check, but sometimes that doesn’t get to the root of the problem.” —Terrance Smith Jr.

B

ringing beer products to market for Hoosiers has been the family business for the past four generations of the Smith family—and Terrance Smith Jr. said that’s a nice legacy to be part of.

“As my father would say, it’s challenging but it’s also a blessing,” he said. “I’ve been very lucky and fortunate to have a mentor like him.” The “him” is Terrance Smith Sr., who purchased a Budweiser operation in 1980 that’s now known as Terrance A. Smith Distributing Inc. The Anderson-based company serves much of northeast Indiana, including Hartford City, Richmond, Anderson, Muncie and Hamilton County. Smith Sr. said his family has been distributing beer pretty much since coming to America. “I’m a third-generation beer wholesaler,” he said. “My granddad immigrated from Germany at the turn of the century, and he was kind of a local entrepreneur from Alexandria, Indiana.” Smith is not exactly a common German name, and family lore has it the name change came when their grandfather was navigating the immigration process. “He said, ‘That was the name of the guy in front of me and the name in front of him and the name in front of him,’ so that’s how the name came about,” said Smith Sr. Smith Sr.’s father started his own distributing business after graduating from Notre Dame, carrying a variety of beers until 1996. Smith Jr., who is sales manager for Hamilton County, got his start in the family business at age 14, scrubbing floors and painting the warehouse. “I had this little 6-inch-by-4-inch brush, and I got painting,” Smith Jr. said with a smile. Explaining the key to longevity in the distributing business, Smith Sr. said it’s important to have good relationships with retailers. He credited Budweiser with launching a variety of promotions that help with brand identification, while also launching new products that retailers are looking for. “Right now it’s kind of in vogue: What’s new?” said Smith Sr. “So from a legacy brand like Bud Light, we kind of continually have to re-invent the ‘what’s new’ piece of it.” Whether it’s new Budweiser flavors or craft beers, Smith Sr. said sampling events are an important part of promotions. “It’s all getting the consumer to have a taste experience and also have a connectivity with the marketing,” he said.

Geist Cleanup Day, gathering and bagging several hundred pounds of trash. Smith Jr. said the rubbish included everything from toilet seats to fishing lures. That kind of personal involvement is important, he adds. “We wanted to give something extra,” he said. “It’s nice to write a check, but sometimes that doesn’t get to the root of the problem.”

The company supports several community causes. One is the Folds of Honor scholarship program, which provides scholarships for families of soldiers killed or disabled during war. Smith Distributing connected with the program three years ago and has been supporting it since, most recently with a $5,000 donation toward a scholarship for a local family.

You will also see the Smiths at the Geist Lake Coalition’s Fourth of July “Blast on the Bridge” celebration near the Budweiser Build a Bar. Not only do they bring their massive mobile bar to the center of the bridge for the fireworks show, they donate $10,000 to the cause as well. More than 20 percent of the company employees recently took to the streets for

Looking ahead, Smith Jr. is optimistic he’ll still be working with his dad 20 years from now. The area is growing, he said, and they want to be a part of that. “I think we’ll be in Hamilton County, continuing to give back to our retailers and our communities and consumers,” he said. “I don’t see any drastic changes at this point, but you never know from day to day,” he added.

FISHERS ON TAP- SUMMER 2014 JUNE 14 / FISHERS OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATER / 5 P.M.–8 P.M. / VIP HOUR 4 P.M.–5 P.M. Writer / Clark Edwards

I recently sat down with Bill Jerrow and Michele Whelchel, the co-chairs for the Fishers on Tap – Summer fundraiser, the all-Indiana craft beer tasting event, and discovered that the event is much more than an excuse to try some great local craft beers. On June 14 (Father’s Day weekend), there will be beer samples from 16 local Indiana craft breweries along with pork sliders provided by Dick’s Bodacious Bar-B-Q for all attendees. There will also be live music and golf games from Golf 365 to satisfy those with a competitive spirit.

The VIP hour from 4 to 5 will feature special brews from the same 16 breweries and food samples from local restaurants like Peterson’s, Eddie Merlot’s, Ruth’s Chris, Simeri’s, Rockstone, and Red Sake.

Unique to this year is the addition of a “Wine Ticket” for those who prefer grapes to hops. It provides entrance to the event and the BBQ sliders, and wine is available for purchase, provided by Chateau Thomas Winery.

Fishers on Tap – Summer is not your typical beer tasting event, and it is sought after by the breweries for the quality time and conversations they are able to have with local craft beer enthusiasts. But the real winners from this event will be the local charities serving children and youth that will be the beneficiaries. All proceeds are donated to help those in need in our communities.

Fishers on Tap – Summer is brought to you by the Rotary Club of Fishers, which comprises 121 men and women who believe in service above self, and giving back. Since the inception of the club in 1992 they have donated more than $685,000 to over 87 non-profit organizations and given untold volunteer man hours of service.

FISHERS ROTARY PROJECTS HAVE INCLUDED: • Kids’ Voice – Serving at-risk children • Pink Ribbon Connection – Breast cancer support • Promising Futures – Anger management for youth • Girls on the Run – Adolescent girls’ self-image • Hear Indiana – Hearing-challenged resources • Youth Mentoring Initiative – One-on-one help • Nigerian Water Project • Fishers Liberty Plaza – Celebrating our veterans • Prevail – Victims of crime and domestic abuse • Fishers Fire Department • Brooke’s Place – Grief counseling for youth • Ambassador House – Local historical residence • College Scholarships – HSE and Fishers High Schools • Shelter Box – Disaster relief shelters • Water Is Life – Water well drilling in Africa • Fresh Starts – Domestic violence survivors • Partners in Housing Development • Servants at Work – Wheelchair ramp building • Alzheimer’s Association

HSE 21 INITIATIVE Writer / Beth Niedermeyer, PhD, Assistant Superintendent Hamilton Southeastern Schools

These are exciting times at Hamilton Southeastern Schools. The HSE21 initiative that has been in development since 2011 has finally reached its implementation phase. In the fall, 5th and 6th grade students (intermediate) will each have an iPad as an instructional tool to support their learning in preparation for the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century global economy. The planning process has included students, parents, teachers and community partners. Here is a summary of how we are laying the groundwork:

STUDENTS

address digital literacy, student engagement and classroom management with electronic tools. Plus, teachers and students will benefit from community partnerships with the Hamilton East Public Library and Launch Fishers for resource sharing and career exploration.

PARENTS

HSE staff has held three initial parent meetings to offer an overview of the implementation plan and to answer questions. The screencast of these meetings along with a list of Q and A’s are posted on the HSE website to support parents. Future sessions will include Internet safety and awareness classes (in collaboration with the Fishers Police Department) and tips on monitoring their child’s accounts and activities.

First 20 days of school videos Our intermediate students will watch and discuss staff-created video clips that define student expectations, discuss rules regarding Distribution dates for parents opting to appropriate usage and teach Internet safety. rent an iPad for their child are August 5, 6, 7. More information will be sent out in the TEACHERS summer for those families. In the summer months, teachers will enhance their curricula by developing units and adding digital resources that integrate 21st century concepts and skills. Teacher training will emphasize a blended instructional approach that combines both digital and printed resources with best instructional practices. Teachers also will have opportunities to grow professionally and expand their expertise through free in-house and statewide conferences that

While we have tried to gather input and anticipate all possible concerns and challenges implementation might bring, we know issues will arise that may require us to make adjustments. Through this process, we will continue to provide information and updates as needed. hse.k12.in.us/ADM/academics/hse21/

INDY IS HAPPY Writer / Marcia Vigren

With Indianapolis being hit with one of the hardest winters in a long time, you would think that our fine residents would have fallen into a depression as deep as the snow (or as low as the plummeted mercury). Instead, MediaFuel Digital Creative Agency, a local Fishers company, set out to prove that we still have a lot to be happy about. On Wednesday, April 2nd, MediaFuel’s video entitled: Indy is Happy, went live … and viral. Within the first five hours of being tweeted out, the video received 3,000 views and, within one day, had 15,000 views. After two weeks, it was watched 50,000 times! Channel 6 called within a couple hours of its release and aired the story, that night, on the 11:00 news. The next day, MediaFuel and the video were on WZPL, Channels 8, 13, and Fox 59. The video has been seen by all 50 states and many countries. Principal of MediaFuel, Jeff Kivett is a local guy, himself, graduating from Lawrence Central High School and then Ball State. He explained that the inspiration for the video came from a campaign started by Pharrell

Williams entitled: Twenty-Four Hours of Happiness. “I went to the team and said, ‘Hey guys, are you ready for the next Harlem Shake?’ The video guy came down and said, ‘I think we should do one for Indianapolis.’ We reached out to all our contacts in Indianapolis, anyone from the Colts to the Indians to showcase our businesses and our people to show we have pride in our city.” The challenge was to turn it around quickly, before someone else beat them to the punch, and boy, did they ever. “We turned it around in about a week,” says Jeff.

and live. What’s funny is those thoughts carried over into the news media because that’s actually the message they used, without us saying that. With all the negativity, with all the homicides, [their message was]: here’s the positive story of the day. It is still a great city to live in. There is still a reason to smile at the end of the day.”

Jay Sheets can take the credit for all the filming and editing of the video. Most of the people he filmed dancing were pre-arranged contacts, but some were individuals in the right place at the right time. When asked to In case you haven’t seen it, Indy is Happy is participate, the businesses quickly responded “yes!” “Everybody got excited really quickly a video featuring Blue from the Colts, local about it,” says Kivett. People are asking when businesses, the Indians, Indy Car driver Josef Newgarden and even some of DeVeau’s there will be a second version. MediaFuel isn’t planning one, at this time, but receiving Gymnasts. Why don’t you give it a try and If they are not making money from it, why do the video? Kivett explains: “Our intention watch it for yourself. Visit IndyisHappy. com, #indyishappy, or just search it. The was: we’re coming out of this hard winter Indy happiness is everywhere!! … let’s do something great to showcase the local businesses and people here and let’s just remind people this is a great place to work atFishers.com / JUNE 2014 / FISHERS / 53

LYME DISEASE:

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY attached 24-36 hours to transmit infection. However, Dr. Willy Burgdorfer, PhD, discoverer of Lyme, found that 5-10 percent of Lyme-carrying ticks have bacteria in their saliva and can transmit the infection as soon as they bite. Not all deer ticks carry the Lyme bacterium and the percentage of carriers varies according to geography. In the last couple years, Indiana has been added to the list as a “high risk” state and Lyme disease cases have now been reported in all 50 states. In 2013, the CDC reported they believe the disease is grossly under-reported and that it is likely there are 300,000 annual cases in the U.S. Put into perspective, that is roughly equal to the same number of new breast cancer cases diagnosed each year. When not treated properly, Lyme disease can be disabling and can cause death.

Pictured Tracey (R) and her family Writer / Tracey Bobek

May was Lyme Disease Awareness Month and having Lyme disease myself, I would like to share some lesser-known facts about Lyme disease and other tickborne infections. Ticks are active longer than just during the summer months. Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is usually transmitted by the deer tick, or “black-legged” tick. While these ticks are more active in warmer months, they have a 2-year lifespan and are active anytime the temperature is above 40-45 degrees.

Many people are unaware they have been bitten by a tick. Deer ticks are very, very tiny, and they excrete a natural anesthetic when they bite. In their larval stage, when they feed on mice and can contract the Lyme bacterium, they are the size of a period on this paper. In the nymph stage, the size of a poppy seed, they can begin transmitting diseases to a larger host, such as a human. They’re easiest to spot as adults, but are still only the size of a sesame seed. Larva and nymph forms peak in Indiana in July/August and adults in June and September/October. Usually a tick carrying Lyme must remain

Many people assume if they are bitten by a different tick species, there is no risk for infection. Deer ticks as well as many other tick species can carry several other infections besides Lyme, including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia. All are very serious; some can be disabling, and even cause death. I was also infected with Anaplasmosis and possibly Bartonella when I was infected with Lyme. Lyme treatment can be tricky and requires a knowledgeable doctor. Testing is unreliable at all stages of the disease, and therefore, Lyme should be a clinical diagnosis. Most patients recover completely if Lyme is caught early (within 30-60 days) and treated completely (4-6 weeks of properly dosed antibiotics). However, the current average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is 1.7-2.0 years. If the disease goes undiagnosed for long periods, therapy can be long and intensive. I’ve struggled with Lyme for 17 years, with a diagnosis delay of ~14 months after my “flu and rash” first appeared. Not everyone progresses

through the disease similarly, especially since symptoms change over time. Initial flu symptoms disappear and the bacteria invade organs, collagen, joints, and the nervous system, wreaking havoc for years when undiagnosed. They change shapes to avoid destruction by the immune system and antibiotics, and even go dormant for periods of time. Lyme is often misdiagnosed as Chronic Fatigue, Colitis, Crohn’s, Early ALS, Early Alzheimer’s, Encephalitis, Fibromyalgia, GERD, Arthritis (RA , Osteo, Reactive, Psoriatic and Juvenile), Interstitial Cystitis, IBS, Lupus, Ménières, MS, Prostatitis, Psychiatric disorders, Raynaud’s, Scleroderma, Sjogren’s, Sleep or Thyroid disorders.

If you find a tick embedded in your skin, remove it with a pair of tweezers as close as possible to the mouth parts and lift up gently. NEVER use a flame, polish remover or any other means to remove a tick. It can scare them and cause them to “vomit” their stomach contents into your system

and potentially infect you. Clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol to help prevent infection. Save the tick in a sealed plastic Ziploc bag: it may prove useful for later testing if you develop symptoms. References can be seen on AtFishers.com

What can you do to protect yourself? When in wooded or tall grassy areas, cover all exposed skin, and check your entire body afterwards. Use repellents. Please do your own research to make the best choices for your family. DEET repels ticks and 20%-30% DEET is recommended. Do NOT apply DEET to children under 2 months. A note to fishermen: DEET repels fish, so take care not to contaminate your lures. Permethrin is derived from the chrysanthemum family of plants and actually kills ticks but should ONLY be applied to clothing where it can last for several weeks once applied. It is very toxic to cats. Essential Oils: Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lemon Leaves, Peppermint, Lavender, Cedar, Canola, Rosemary, Pennyroyal, and Cajeput have been found to be effective in repelling ticks, but the effects only last 30-60 minutes, so frequent reapplication is essential. The CDC recommends only one research-approved essential oil, lemon eucalyptus, which can be found in products such as Repel and Off !
