Skilled trade careers offer steady work because people will always need plumbing, heating and cooling in their homes and offices. In addition, many people love to work with their hands. The team at Peterman Brothers recognizes this, and in October of 2020 they began Top Tech Academy, their own internal trade school that offers both HVAC and plumbing courses. MOTW COFFEE & PASTRIES CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING IN FISHERS

Writer / Kylee White Photographer / Sam Zachrich

Social media is at the hands of everyone these days. Some people are able to use it to create a life for themselves. For Sajjad Shah, owner of Instagram page Muslims of the World (MOTW), this was the case. “Our mission is to bring people together,” Shah says. “Even helping people and doing the charity work that we do is under our goal of bringing people together because it all falls under that concept.”

“I was one of the only few Muslims at HSE and I fit in, but I never really felt that I completely fit in,” Shah says. “I started an Instagram story highlighting Muslim stories and people who had Muslim faith and their everyday stories.” Suddenly, Shah’s page started going viral, as more and more people began listening to the stories he shared. “These stories resonated with people who were not Muslim and people with other faiths,” Shah says. “All of a sudden, the page just went viral.”

Shah created an Instagram profile to showcase Muslim voices while he was in Muslims Of The World (MOTW)’s high school. Years later, Shah was able to Instagram now has close to 700,000 grow his business to include MOTW Coffee followers, and continues to grow. The and Pastries.

organization has been able to do a lot of work in being able to bring people together, despite their faith or differences. “Of course, the next big thing we decided was, ‘well what is another thing that brings people together?’ And we thought coffee,” Shah adds. Shah opened MOTW Coffee & Pastries in Indianapolis close to 11 months ago and just recently opened the newest location in Fishers. “I’ve been in Fishers for the past 20 years and thought that we definitely needed a specialty coffee shop here,” he says. MOTW Coffee & Pastries had a soft

opening in mid-March, and the business has already been blooming. Even though the location hasn’t been open for too long, Shah says the response that the shop has gotten so far is just what they were hoping for.

in here and supporting us.”

“The response has been absolutely amazing,” Shah adds. “When we have customers come in the one thing that people are always saying is that we need more coffee shops and more safe places. I think we are a perfect fit for Fishers, and the city is reacting the way we hoped they would, which is coming

“We definitely want to have more locations,” he says. “We haven’t done any marketing here in Fishers yet, and the reason why is because we don’t want to overwhelm our team and staff. We’re just trying to take it slowly. Once we feel like we’re in a good spot then we’ll open up another location.

Shah has plans to continue growing in the future as well but not until their Fishers location of MOTW has a solid foundation.

TownePost.com / MAY 2022 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11

That’s how we did it with our first location. It took us about seven months to feel like we were comfortable before we started working on this shop.” Shah wants the coffee shop to be focused on bringing people together in the community, as well as being a helping hand to those in need. With their Indianapolis location, MOTW Coffee and Pastries worked to build care packages for the homeless this past winter and hope to do more acts like that for Fishers.

“The community in Indianapolis and the community in Fishers is very different,” Shah says. “You don’t see things in Fishers that you might in Indianapolis. But there are people in need everywhere you go, you just have to find them and look a bit harder when you come to cities like Fishers. What we’re trying to do in Fishers is determine what a potential need is and try to mend that.” Shah is proud of the progress that the business had made so far. He is excited to see what MOTW can do for the city of Fishers and is happy to see so many different people come to the new shop.

“As I look around the room I see people that are white, black, brown, people with different faiths, and I know that Fishers wasn’t always like that,” he says. “That’s something that will end up leading to a lot of different great things as well.”

CHEF’S SPECIAL

MASTERCHEF WINNER KELSEY MURPHY OPENS INSPO AT FISHERS TEST KITCHEN Writer / Megan Arszman Photographer / Travis Hinkle

Watching television cooking shows tend to give the everyday American inspiration, whether it’s inspiration to travel, cook or eat whatever food they’re seeing. But very rarely does having Food Network perpetually on television during your college years push

one to change career paths. For Kelsey Murphy, it did all that and more. Originally from Chicago, Murphy met her husband, Brandon, while attending Indiana University (and binging Food Network). The two both graduated with degrees in physical therapy, and Murphy would come

home from work every day and cook to unwind. “I became a food television junkie and just absorbed everything I could from watching Food Network,” she says. “When I’d come home from work, all I wanted to do was be in the kitchen. That was my way of relaxing.” Murphy and her family became devoted fans of Fox’s MasterChef reality competition show where amateur chefs compete in a series of cooking challenges, surviving eliminations and learning under a panel of esteemed chefs. After the tenth season completed, Murphy saw a call-out for the show and she was encouraged by her family to apply. What was initially thought as silly turned into a long, intense process that included numerous interviews, questionnaires and background checks. Murphy headed west to start taping the show in February 2020, where the cast cooked and competed until March 17, when taping (and the entire world) shut down for the global pandemic. Murphy and the others were sent home with instructions

14 / MAY 2022 / TownePost.com

to keep quiet about the show and follow along with the show’s culinary team as they worked to continue fine-tuning their skills in their home kitchens. Seven months later, the cast and Murphy returned to finish taping. “By the time we went back to taping, I was 25 weeks pregnant, and it was by far my hardest pregnancy,” says Murphy. She competed with her own sous chef along for the ride. When the finale was being taped, Murphy had to serve a four-course dinner. By the final course, she knew that if she could just plate the dessert, she would have the win in the bag. “That dish was something that I had worked very hard on, and it was very touch-n-go if I was even going to be able to accomplish it,” she says. “When they announced I was the winner, it was more of a sense of relief because of the amount of stress I had put

on myself, as well as my family to be able to go out and do this. It was a relief that I had actually gone out and accomplished something for not only me, but for my family.” Now the mother to three boys (5-year-old Aniston, 3-year-old Maddox and 1-yearold Lucas) is not only a MasterChef, but a restauranteur. Murphy has spent the time since her win to focus on how she wanted to share her love of cooking with the Fishers community. “The win inspired me to really pursue cooking as a career,” she says. “It was an opportunity you can’t pass up — I felt like I could at least just try because I had a wonderful physical therapy career to fall back on, but hopefully not.” Murphy did research as to what direction she wanted to go in for her restaurant, who to work with and what to not do. She knew that since she didn’t have any real “street

TownePost.com / MAY 2022 / 15

cred” in the culinary world, besides as a competition show winner, she needed to do things right. Recently she opened her restaurant, suitably named “Inspo” as part of the Fishers Test Kitchen. “I wanted the restaurant to really represent the things that I love and the things that have inspired me on my journey to where I am now,” she says. “For example, there’s ceviche on the menu, I feel like that was one moment when I was traveling and I had my first taste of that and it was like ‘Wow.’ Just the taste of it was something I could eat all the time. So, I thought if I was going to have my own restaurant why not put in on the menu because it’s something I love and could eat all the time and, two, I think it’s something other people will love and you can’t find it often.” Murphy is grateful for the group at the Fishers Test Kitchen for helping her

learn the ropes to being not only in the restaurant business but working and leading a restaurant. She hopes to use this time at the test kitchen to expand her knowledge and continue to bring her inspiration to the community. “I’m really trying to bring elevated food to Fishers,” Murphy says. “I want to give people more diverse options, more options that are brought from local entrepreneurs. I want to get people into the elevated food scene but while teaching people that food doesn’t have to be weird or stuffy to be elevated. I really want to step people into that genre, and I think there’s such a market here and there are so many transplants from across the country now moving to Fishers, but I think people are very ready and willing to step into that scene. I’m hoping to be the start of that movement, and I hope to put Fishers on the map in terms of the culinary world. I feel like we’ve grown so much to be a desirable city for families and young people, and I think with that we have to build the food scene.” To dive into Chef Murphy’s inspirational food, stop by the Fishers Test Kitchen, located at the Fishers District at 9713 District North Drive. You can also view selections online at fisherstestkitchen.com/the-food.

hen most people think about the progression of a successful business, they might think about expansion. It’s pretty common for a growing business to desire more space, more employees, more services but for this local business, their perspective of success is more about the quality of what happens within their space over the size of the space itself. Sometimes, less truly is more. Radiate 60 Hair Collective was established in 2016 from the desire to bring a positive change to the beauty industry, not only for clients but also for stylists as well. Owners Krystal Brown and Carly Rush wanted to create an environment that focused more on igniting beauty and life within a person rather than just transforming the outside. “There are enough things in our world that only touch the surface level of our lives,” Brown says. “We knew God was calling us to create a space where we could go to deeper levels of relationship with our guests and where it was part of the culture to build each other up with love and encouragement.”

The salon started out at the Edge building in the heart of downtown Fishers and, over the last five years, they were able to grow and establish the foundation of who they were as a business. The model of the salon is a booth-rent environment that allows independent stylists to grow in their personal business while still working alongside a motivated team of likeminded stylists. “It’s been so fun to look back over the years and see how our business has changed and evolved,” Rush says. “When COVID hit, we used that time to really ask God for direction

for the future, and we both felt as if He was calling us to simplify our space so that we can narrow in on the important details that would help take our salon to the next level. That’s when we decided that a smaller space would allow us to grow with more intention.”

The new space is located off the roundabout on 106th and Lantern Road in Fishers (right around the corner from I Tre Mori). This change of scenery has provided better visibility for those driving by and the access to storefront parking has been a major perk for all.

“We have 10 amazing stylists that are so committed to our team and the vision,” Rush adds. “They know what Radiate 60 stands for and they invest in our space daily to ensure that a life-giving culture is prioritized. We are so thankful for them.”

The outpouring of positive reactions and support from guests has really confirmed that this move was the right next step for Radiate 60.

The salon has a comforting feel from the moment you walk through the doors. Radiate 60 is a full-service hair salon that offers custom color, haircuts, blow-outs, hair extensions and special event styles, including weddings. CREATING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT MIKE JOHNSON NAMED DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL SAFETY FOR HSE SCHOOLS

Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Travis Hinkle

Department, so the timing to apply was right for me.”

The safety of students is paramount at Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools. In creating a safe learning environment, HSE school leaders recently appointed Mike Johnson as director of school safety. The school board recently decided to make the position a full-time role.

Johnson spent 29 years with Fishers Police Department in various roles. He spent 21 years working with the D.A.R.E. education program, gaining in-school experience in the process. He was embedded within the school system from the beginning of his law enforcement career.

“Most recently, school safety fell under the director of staff and student services,” Johnson says. “When Ryan Taylor retired, the superintendent and the school board decided to create a full-time safety position. I had recently retired from Fishers Police

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the program,” Johnson says. “It was a great opportunity to work with kids of all ages. I also provided some conflict resolution with students and families. I also got to be a mentor for kids. I was fully immersed in the TownePost.com / MAY 2022 / 25

school culture in my life as a police officer.” Johnson was also heavily involved with the Indiana School Resource Officers Association, where he was trained on best practices for school policing across different spectrums. While his current role does not directly involve supervising school resource officers, he works in conjunction with them. “They have their own supervisor with the police department, but they have me as a liaison to anything school-related,” Johnson says. “We talk through a variety of issues as they come up. It might be something as minor as an elementary-aged student needs a positive role model, to something heavier

such as how we can respond to students with suicidal ideations.” Johnson is excited to be able to make the position his own by deciding what he wants to focus on in the upcoming years. “This concept of school safety isn’t new, but having someone dedicated to it full time is,” Johnson says. “There are really great people at HSE Schools, and it’s just a blessing to take this role and make it my own.”

Johnson knows physical safety is important, but wants to focus on emotional safety as well. He also wants to expand upon the Parent Safety Academy to showcase what HSE school leaders do to protect students and staff. He would also like to work on transparency efforts through social media. “I want to look at the things we do well and expand upon those, and look at the areas where we may see some gaps so we can improve on those,” Johnson says. “The

beauty of this now being a full-time position is that I won’t be pulled away due to other responsibilities or duties.” Johnson is also a trainer with the National Association of School Resource Officers, teaching their adolescent mental-health class and school resource officer course. FISHERS BOASTS TWO OF INDIANA’S PREMIER HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VOLLEYBALL PROGRAMS Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photography Provided

Men’s volleyball is one of the fastestgrowing sports in the United States at the youth, high school and collegiate levels. Fishers is home to two of the premier high school boys volleyball programs in the state of Indiana. Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School. Fishers High School Boys Volleyball head coach Carlos Capo grew up playing volleyball in Puerto Rico, where the game has long been popular. “It’s kind of like basketball in Indiana,” he says. “If you’re an athlete, you play sports. You usually play a little bit of volleyball in Puerto Rico.”

Capo says he’s always been interested in coaching, but when his kids were younger they practiced immediately after school and his job prevented him from helping out as much as he wanted to. When Capo and his family moved to Indiana in 2007, his kids enrolled in St. Pious, which practiced later in the day, allowing Capo to help out. Fishers High School initially organized a volleyball program in 1994, but the program quickly dissolved. With his son set to attend the school, but with no team to play for, Capo and two others took in upon themselves to restart the program in 2015.

At the time of press, FHS Boys Volleyball sat at a record of 16-8 on the season. The Tigers face a fresh challenge in their quest to win another state championship, Capo’s team is only returning one player from last year’s team, Zach Lewis, who is currently out with an injury. Capo says the season is playing out the way he expected it would.

“I expected that the team would be more of a second-half team for the season just because of all the new starting players that I have,” he says. “I need the team to really kind of find their groove and play more as Fishers High School won the two most a team, but you can tell they’re still getting recent Boys Volleyball State Championships used to each other. A lot of these kids have — the first in 2019 and the second in 2021. not played together before, so they just need more reps together.” The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Volleyball assistant coach Wes Marchione also grew up around volleyball. He’s the son of a girls volleyball coach. His high school in Ohio didn’t offer men’s volleyball, so he played for club teams. Eventually, a group of four fathers got together to start a program at the high school, Marchione joined the team and went on to win two state championships his junior and senior year. Marchione attended Ball State University. Upon learning their volleyball team didn’t take walk-ons, he continued playing for club teams. It’s also where he started coaching a girls team for 17 and 18-year-olds. Marchione continued to play and coach

volleyball. He formed a team with players who had played at IU and Purdue, they traveled the country and played nationals. During this time, Marchione met current HSE Boys Volleyball Head Coach Jon Harmon. Years later, when Marchione moved to Fishers with his family, he got into contact with Harmon. “I knew Coach Harmon was still trying to build the program at HSE,” Marchione says. “So, I just reached out to him and said, ‘Hey, I’ve got an eighth-grade son and he’s playing. I’d like to help out and try to build the program with you. And if you have an opening, I’d be willing to step in and help out.’ ”

Marchione uses to pitch volleyball to potential student-athletes who grew up playing more traditional sports. He says volleyball is another potential avenue for students who hope to play sports in college. “There’s a lot that volleyball could do for you, not only personally, but also athletically, if you’d like to pursue that in college as well,” he says.

Despite the growth of the sport and the increase of interest at all levels, Boys Volleyball is still not an IHSAA sanctioned sport. That means that boys volleyball teams don’t receive the same financial support as sanctioned sports like basketball, football and girls volleyball. Both Capo and That was four years ago. Harmon Marchione say they’ve received support announced that this will be his final year from their respective athletic directors, but coaching the team. Marchione will take over they acknowledge men’s volleyball’s status the role of head coach next season. as a club sport presents challenges. At press time, the Royals are 20-3. Marchione says last year’s team was young and raw but with only a handful of seniors graduated, this year’s team features veterans with experience playing together and more room to grow. Marchione believes his team can make a deep run in this year’s tournament.

Not all schools support their programs equally and that can make it difficult to field new teams. Practice time in the gym, time in the weight room, and transportation to matches all cost money and can be difficult for teams to secure.

“We feel that ceiling is still very high for us,” he says. “So I think this is going to be one of our best seasons ever.”

That may soon change. In February, a proposal was submitted for men’s volleyball to join the IHSAA’s new emerging sports division. The vote takes place on May 2. Capo hopes the vote passes.

Men’s volleyball is growing at the collegiate level as well, which is one of the facts

“I believe that’s what is going to make it really exponentially grow,” he says.

PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS HAS YOUR EQUIPMENT NEEDS COVERED Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photographer / Robby Berry

Play It Again Sports is a sporting goods store that specializes in new as well as used sports and fitness equipment. There are about 300 Play It Again Sports locations throughout the United States and 50 in Canada, but the stores are locally owned and operated. Dan Gilchrist, owner of the Carmel and Fishers Play It Again Sports locations, started working at the Carmel store when he moved to Carmel during his junior year of high school. When Gilchrist moved to Bloomington to attend Indiana University, he worked part time at the Bloomington location. Gilchrist graduated in 2003

and moved home to Carmel. He and his dad decided to buy a franchise themselves and reopened the Carmel store that year. Eventually the demand for business became so great, Gilchrist and his father decided to open a second store. The Fishers Play It Again Sports team opened their doors in 2011. “We pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service every day, and we have a good selection of major brands of products and the new selection that’s in our stores,” Gilchrist says. He says Play It Again Sports sales are roughly a 50-50 split between new and used products, which he believes may surprise people. “Most people don’t know that we have new stuff, but we’re constantly competing with Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s and any other retailer that sells new products,” he says. “We have the buying power of large group stores, and that’s why we bought into the franchise versus opening a store with their

own name or something on it.” Play It Again Sports offers a wide variety of sporting equipment to the public including gear for baseball, football, soccer, hockey, golf, lacrosse, water sports and winter sports. Gilchrist says the winter months see an increase in the sale of indoor gym and fitness equipment like treadmills and stationary bikes. Play It Again Sports also offers service for equipment that needs servicing. Gilchrist says the community response to the Fishers location has been great, and the store’s reach continues to grow. Gilchrist and his wife moved to Fishers 10 years ago and currently have two young children involved in Fishers sports. Gilchrist and the Play It Again Sports staff work with local youth sports and school programs. Providing quality service to the local community is important to him.

DAMN GOOD TACOS

TEXAS CHAIN TORCHY’S TACOS OPENS FISHERS LOCATION Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Torchy’s Tacos

Whether it’s a signature taco or one of their fresh margaritas, Torchy’s Tacos is ready to bring an exceptional dining experience to customers in Hamilton County. “We want to be known as the best damn taco place out there,” says Torchy’s Tacos Market Partner Joe Kopke. “Everywhere we go, that’s our mission, while providing jobs and a great work culture.” Torchy’s Tacos in Fishers marks the chain’s first location in central Indiana. Since the restaurant’s grand opening on March 14, hungry Hamilton County patrons have flocked to the beloved taco shop, getting a true taste of the Torchy’s Tacos hype for

freshness of their food and drinks.

The origin of Torchy’s Tacos dates back to 2006, when Founder Mike Rypka first started selling freshly made tacos out of a food trailer he hooked up to his red Vespa.

“Everything is made from scratch,” he says. “I think a lot of brands say that, but our food really is made from scratch. People can’t receive their food in just two minutes because we do make everything from scratch. It makes the fast-casual, or what we call ‘craft casual,’ an elevated experience where you might have to wait a little bit longer, which is why we have bars with scratch-made cocktails and margaritas.”

“Mike just really wanted to get tacos in people’s hands,” Kopke says. “He got on his Vespa, would hand out free chips, salsa and queso, and the lines started to form in 2006. People used to say that the tacos were damn good, and that became our mission statement as we are today.” Now with more than 100 locations across several states, the Torchy’s Tacos brand has become a favorite to many across America. According to Kopke, one thing that sets Torchy’s apart from other taco spots is the 36 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2022 / TownePost.com

“We are working our tails off in the back to make everything recipe-right and to perfection,” Kopke continues. “That way, when you do get your food, you do say, ‘Man, that’s damn good.’ It’s a different experience from the typical fast-casual, where everything’s in front of you and

already made. They say fresh, but how fresh is that?” When it comes to customer favorites, Kopke says you can’t go wrong with the Trailer Park taco, which features fried chicken, green chiles, lettuce, pico de gallo and cheddar jack cheese with poblano sauce on a flour tortilla. “You can get that trashy, which is with our award-winning queso layered over the top,” he says. “It’s named after Mike starting the business out in a trailer park. I think that’s one of the very best and most unique tacos that we offer.” Other unique taco offerings include the Brushfire (featuring Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled jalapeños, mango, sour cream and cilantro, with diablo sauce), the Republican (featuring jalapeño cheddar sausage, pico de gallo, cheddar jack cheese and poblano sauce), and the restaurant’s array saw an interest in the area, which has been of breakfast tacos, which are served all day. further validated by area customers. While munching on a taco or two, be sure to explore the Torchy’s drink menu as well. “Any time we look at location, we look for demand and people who want to see “The margarita is a staple, whether it’s Torchy’s brought to their community,” frozen or on the rocks,” Kopke says. “Then Kopke says. “I think we had a lot of good you’ve got the Torchy’s Tini, which is a feedback from people who lived in that area. classic martini with a twist.
