INSPIRING YOUNG CODERS

A CODERDOJO WITH SENSEI JAVERIA MASOOD believes we can improve the future. The popularity of these coding clubs is catching fire. CoderDojos are popping up all over the country, and thanks to a grant from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Eleven Fifty Academy implemented a statewide outreach program. “By the end of this year, Indiana will have more CoderDojos than any other state,” says Stephanie Castleman, Director of Outreach for Eleven Fifty Academy. “Throughout this year, we are holding Cool Coding Awareness Weeks in under-served communities in Indiana. A CoderDojo remains in place after the Cool Coding Awareness Week, enabling the spark to grow.” The success of these coding clubs for kids depends on the volunteers, all of which are like Masood is one way: they share a passion for programming. It was through studying Information Science and Technology that Masood knew she had found her calling. Being the lead volunteer for the CoderDojo at Launch Fishers is her way of giving back and inspiring others to find their passion. “My two favorite quotes are: ‘Learn, Reflect, Grow and Repeat…always!’ and ‘Be brave and passionate!’” shares Masood. “These two ideals have helped me greatly in life. If you met me a few years ago, you would not recognize me as the same person.”

Writer & Photographer / Kara Kavensky Reibel

Javeria Masood draws from her passion of sharing technology with children and young adults by facilitating an exciting, interactive coding education program. Masood is the lead volunteer for the CoderDojo held monthly at Launch Fishers. CoderDojo Indiana oversees this and many other coding clubs across the state. CoderDojo Director Courtney Lambert, with her office inside TechPoint Foundation for Youth and sponsored by Eleven Fifty Academy, seeks volunteers like Masood to lead the local CoderDojos. Currently there are 15 CoderDojos in Indiana with an anticipated 35 by the end of this year. Like the Launch Fishers CoderDojo, most CoderDojos meet monthly. There is a lot of fun mixed into the coding lessons, which provides kids hands-on learning. Through efforts like CoderDojos, Masood, along with CoderDojo Indiana, firmly

Masood shares that it took a lot of effort to become brave and overcome her fears. By discovering her passion, she now resonates confidence. “Passion can create so many opportunities for anyone! If you have passion, you have persistence and the motivation to keep moving forward. I always keep Steve Jobs’ words in mind, ‘You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.’” She adds, “Kids are capable of a lot more than we think. In some parts of the world, 8-year-olds are supporting their families. Their intellect and drive can be astounding. They are the future! When all the states decided to move to online standardized testing and started distributing devices in schools, I decided to help them use those devices to be even more productive. Hopscotch is one of the programs we use for the CoderDojos. Hopscotch even provided me their official curriculum and letter of support when I detailed my plan to them.” Kids gain confidence through coding. This positively impacts public speaking skills and self-confidence, and according to

atFishers.com / AUGUST 2016 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 15

Masood, the kids all leave the CoderDojo sessions with smiles on their faces. One key element is that guest speakers who hold jobs in the tech sector speak to the kids about what they do. “To me, the most exciting opportunity for kids who attend a CoderDojo is the chance to work alongside coding professionals on hands-on projects. One of the most common reasons students cite for not going into computer science fields is that they don’t know anyone who works in those fields, and they don’t know what those people do,” states Lambert. “At CoderDojo, students are given a space to build relationships with active computer science professionals and to explore their interest in coding with the full support of these industry volunteers.” In a few short months, the CoderDojo led by Masood has close to 40 kids in attendance, ranging in ages from 7 to 17. A mom of a student coder recently tweeted: “Javeria, I wanted to thank you for introducing Hopscotch to my 8-year-old. He is hooked and even coded a ‘scene’ for his teacher for Teacher Appreciation Week! This is the first coding program that he really gets and likes!” Masood is an IT Consultant for netlogx. She volunteers her time to inspire these young aspiring coders. Parents can register kids at zen.coderdojo.com/register or bit.ly/fisherscode.

IT’S A NEW DAY AT

DIRECTBUY

8450 Westfield Blvd #100 Indianapolis, IN 46240 317-472-9800 Indianapolis.DirectBuy.com

MEMBERSHIP IS NOW AFFORDABLE FOR EVERYONE What if you could shop directly from over 700 of the world’s best brand name manufacturers with a savings guarantee? What if someone made these great prices and this vast selection of products incredibly convenient? It would sound too good to be true. That and much more is what DirectBuy has offered its clients for years. However, recently they made this all available at a remarkably affordable price. For those not familiar with DirectBuy, it’s a savings club that utilizes the buying power of its members to negotiate with manufacturers great prices on top brands for your home and lifestyle. DirectBuy, originally known as United Consumers Club, started in Merrillville, Indiana, in 1971 by James Gagan. From its inception, DirectBuy provided great savings to its members. The problem for many was that until recently, a DirectBuy

membership required a significant upfront membership fee of a few thousand dollars. Unless you were undertaking a large project or had the foresight to look at purchases over a period of time the significant upfront fee was a deterrent to many consumers becoming members. The great news is that DirectBuy has transitioned from a membership program to a subscription model. You can now subscribe to the service for a nominal initial fee and a monthly subscription as low as $39.95. Needless to say, access to the great prices and unmatched selection offered by DirectBuy just became affordable to nearly everyone. Recently, we met Jack Powell and his wife Genta, the owners of DirectBuy of Indianapolis. Jack and Genta have a lifetime of experience with DirectBuy. Jack’s involvement

in DirectBuy began when he and his brother were caddying at a golf club where Gagan played. The brothers went from caddying to working for DirectBuy part-time in high school and college. Starting full time in 1978, Jack has now owned two franchise locations and was a Field Sales Director for the corporate office where he met his wife Genta, who held a position as a Field Service Director. In explaining what makes DirectBuy’s pricing policy different, Jack stated, “Most people, if you asked them, think they are a good shopper and that they get the best price. But what they are doing is comparing one retail price with another retail price. When they come into DirectBuy, they see the dealer price sheet. They see what we buy it for, and they see what any retailer buys it for. They know exactly what the true cost is on whatever they buy.”

"THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT DIRECTBUY HAS TRANSITIONED FROM A MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM TO A SUBSCRIPTION MODEL." Owners Jack and Genta Powell with daughter, Miah. INDY METRO / AUGUST 2016 / TownePost.com

When you walk in to the local DirectBuy showroom located at 8450 Westfield Blvd., you will immediately see a vast number of manufacturers’ product displays as well as bookshelves lined with hundreds of manufacturers’ catalogs. You are welcome to stop by the showroom to see the vast selection and confidential pricing available through DirectBuy. Genta and her staff will be happy to provide any help you may need to find the products you are looking for.

In addition to the showroom, DirectBuy also makes shopping incredibly convenient online. The My DirectBuy website allows you to shop how you want, where you want and whenever you want. They also offer an app that has an amazing feature called “I Want That.” If you are out and see something you want, simply take a picture of it and upload it to the app. DirectBuy’s Concierge Shopping experts will investigate your request and provide you with matching or similar products along with pricing. If you are shopping online and a question arises, you can call the Concierge Shopping experts 7 days a week to help answer any questions or plan a project. DirectBuy even offers a custom in-home designer service where someone will come to your home to help with your project.

Big box stores pick and choose the items they offer for sale from a manufacturer’s line based on what their buyers think you want and which ones will be most profitable for them to carry. At DirectBuy, they simply provide you with the manufacturers’ catalog and let you decide which products you want to buy, and that typically includes their entire line.

INDY THE ™

At DirectBuy you will find a full complement of suppliers that represent quality products from entry level to high end. Many members find they can upgrade quality through DirectBuy since they avoid the hidden retail markup. Last but not least, DirectBuy now offers a travel service, which has great savings on vacation packages all over the world. DirectBuy is a Premium Sponsor of MIBOR and is now working with realtors in the area to help new homeowners furnish, decorate and remodel their homes. DirectBuy of Indianapolis has been named multiple times as the best in the category of Kitchen and Bath Cabinetry by Indy’s A List, including 2016. Additionally the Corporate Enterprise offering enables local business owners to provide the DirectBuy subscription as a company perk. If you, like most, are looking for a place to shop with unmatched savings, selection and convenience with award winning service, stop by or call Jack and Genta at DirectBuy. This remarkable shopping experience has never been more affordable. TownePost.com / AUGUST 2016 / INDY METRO

If you are planning a larger home improvement project, the showroom is a convenient place to meet your contractor and/or designer where you can do a onestop shop and order everything you may need to complete the project, knowing that you are getting the best pricing without having to run all over town.

As mentioned earlier, DirectBuy’s selection is enormous. It includes the products of over 700 name brand manufacturers, which translates into over 1,000,000 SKUs. A partial list of the products offered includes home improvement categories like carpeting, hardwood flooring, windows, plumbing fixtures, furniture and major appliances along with lifestyle products like sunglasses, golf clubs, exercise equipment, televisions, jewelry and apparel.

In addition to providing this valuable pricing information to their clients, DirectBuy also backs this up with an actual savings guarantee. According to Jack, “One of the most significant things we have done recently is we now have a savings guarantee. When a person buys something [at DirectBuy], they are absolutely guaranteed the lowest prices in the marketplace.” You can actually see the savings guarantee spelled out in the DirectBuy catalog and on their website.

WINE, ART, MUSIC AND MICROBREWS Many Indianapolis metro residents are familiar with Taxman Brewing and Mallow Run Winery. However, the wines and microbrews of Johnson County extend well beyond those two. The county is home to more than five microbreweries including Oaken Barrel, one of the original brewers in the state. Nearly 20 brewers and wineries from around Indiana will come together to celebrate Indiana’s wine, art, music and microbrews at WAMMfest at Craig Park in Greenwood Saturday, August 20. This year, WAMMfest features 10 breweries, nine wineries, a large number of restaurants, food trucks, live music and more than 70 artist booths in a juried art

fair. The juried art fair ensures that only Indiana’s finest artist and craftspeople will fill Artists Alley featuring jewelry, painting, sculptures, baskets, clothing and more. Live music includes acoustic acts, a string quartet, jazz and a selection of retro and contemporary bands. In its first seven years, WAMMfest has become a wonderful way to spend a Saturday, attacking more than 6,000 people annually from all around the metro area. The event, organized by the Sertoma Club of Greenwood, has resulted in $450,000 being donated by Sertoma for local causes and charities. Wineries at the event include Buck Creek, Cedar Creek, Chateau Thomas, Harmony,

Breweries include 450 North, Cedar Creek Winery & Brew Co., Flat 12 Bierwerks, Mashcraft, Oaken Barrel, Planetary, Quaff On, Sun King, Taxman and Tow Yard. Early bird general admission tickets are $10 for ages 7 and older. They can be purchased online at WAMMfest.com or at any Ray Skillman Auto Group Dealership, the Greenwood Public Library, Greenwood Community Center and Greenwood-area Horizon bank locations. Early bird ticket sales end at 11:59 p.m. on August 19. Tickets are also available at the gate for $15.

CARMEL'S CELEBRATION OF THE ART IN AUTOMOTIVE

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

Each year, this unique event features a distinct gathering of recognized artists, collector cars and automotive enthusiasts, showcased on the streets of the Carmel Arts & Design District. With more than 400 enthusiast and collector cars on the streets of Carmel, the Artomobilia boasts one of the most eclectic gatherings of original, period-correct cars, including Supercar, Exotic, Sports Car, Classics, Racers, Historically Preserved, Indiana Built and Sedan/Coupe, and will be featuring two new classes, Antique Trucks and Restomods. Each year, the Artomobilia highlights a selection of automotive anomalies that are as interesting as they are distinct. In past years, this event has featured 50 Years of Mustang, Porsche, series-winning racecars and more. Enthusiast and collector cars come in all shapes and sizes, and our car corrals feature brand-specific examples across 25 or more different corrals. While these are not formally judged, they represent the best examples of what is going on in national and local car clubs and provide a great opportunity to see firsthand how you can participate in the car hobby.

The Artomobilia continues to grow year over year, attracting over 15,000 automotive enthusiasts of all ages to stroll among collector cars, event sponsors and the Arts & Design District’s restaurants, boutiques and storefront retailers.

This year, the organizers are increasing the diversity of the show’s classes and will introduce two new classes, Antique Trucks and Restomods.

Don’t let another Beat the Fallwithout Rush summer pass & Make your Backyard your dream backyard!

Artomobilia’s Founder John Leonard spoke about what’s new this year for enthusiasts to enjoy while attending this spectacular event.

Dreams a Reality

“Artomobilia is a crazy group of cars, but everyone who participates has the same love of automobiles,” Leonard enthused. “At this show, you’ll see a guy who came with his Ferrari, and he’s down checking out the Chevy Corvair that reminds him of the one he owned when he was 26 years old. “Artomobilia is a great event with a great audience and a great market. The audience appreciates great customer service, high touch and all of the things that our audience and sponsors have come to expect. This year, we’ll have a lot of the same car classes that we’ve traditionally had, but we’ve added Antique Trucks due to the call that we’ve received from owners of these trucks who want to show them. “We’ve also added a Restomod class. Restomods are where you take a Corvette, for example, and install a modern drive train, suspension and brakes. It looks similar to the original stock but has customized features. It has the same shape as the original, but all of the underpinnings are completely different and modernized. They are drivable and enjoyable cars. We want to present cars in groups that people don’t normally see.”

She has recently published her first children’s book titled Scooter and His Scoot Scoot. It is a heartwarming story about a joyful dog named Scooter. Scooter was born different, but with the aid of his Scoot Scoot, he does not let anything slow him down. Scooter and his friends help teach us that everyone is different, and it is what’s in our hearts that truly matters. Annie has been wheelchair-bound since she had a diving accident in May of 2005. Scooter’s endearing story stems from Annie’s own experiences of navigating through life in a wheelchair. She has spoken to many groups about her accident, adapting to life in a wheelchair, and overcoming obstacles. Annie’s true passion is for working with children and being an advocate for those with disabilities! She plans on being able to use Scooter’s story as another way to reach out and educate children on the importance of acceptance, and being able to see past outward appearances and differences.

ADVENTURE IN THE TREES CONNER PRAIRIE OPENS OUTPOST TREETOP Writer & Photographer / Demi Lawrence

On July 1, Conner Prairie introduced their newest and most exciting exhibit yet: Outpost Treetop. This permanent exhibit features a four-story treehouse with a suspension bridge and walkways around it, as well as activities around the premises such as music making and digging in an archeology site. Surrounding the massive structure are also several hiking trails through the forest, which allow families, specifically the children, to adventure the world around them and appreciate the beautiful nature that Indiana has to offer. The treehouse itself towers over its guests at a whopping 45 ft. tall and offers 6,000 sq. ft. of fun and exploration. Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Cathy Ferree said that one of the main purposes of the Outpost Treetop was to shape kids into lifelong learners. The activities surrounding the treehouse allow kids to learn about Indiana’s past without even realizing it, and Conner Prairie hopes that in this learning, kids will ask their parents questions and ultimately learn even more. Another purpose of this exhibit is to get kids engaged in nature and in the outdoors, something that some kids lack today. Outpost Treetop is now open to the public and ready to give your family a great day full of exploration and learning, so come over to Conner Prairie and give it a go!

THINKING "OUTSIDE THE BOX" FOR SPECIAL NEEDS Writer / Kara Kavensky Reibel Photography provided

"It's a whirlwind all the time," says Kelly Hartman, President and CEO of Insight Consulting, of her life. She is also founder of Outside The Box (OTB), which offers day program supports to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve their best possible lives. The Founders and staff of OTB created an amazing example of what's possible for the special needs community. This is accomplished through three areas: day services, employment services, and their art program, Studio OTB.

continues to grow and do more with less which is amazing to me. A need was seen and completely filled!” Recently, at a fundraiser held at the Lucas Oil Estate, Kelly Hartman addressed the crowd of 500+ and said that Outside The Box is about "empowering people to live their best lives", and after meeting many of the staff who work at OTB, it is clear that she is speaking of both the participants as well as the staff. The fundraiser at the Lucas Estate featured local food and beverage vendors, including FoxGardin Kitchen & Ale Chef/Owner Jeff Burgess, who shares, “We had an incredible time! The night had a vibe in the air that was felt by all. It was an honor to be a small part of such a great cause. We can't wait till next year!”

“I first met Kelly Hartman and Outside The Box when OTB applied for an Impact 100 grant,” states Barbara A. Fleming, President of BAF Corp, and OTB board member. “I've never met a more energetic and dedicated Outside the Box was inspired by the person or organization. Outside The Box supports Hartman and her team at Insights

Consulting, provide, which is behavioral and residential programming for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Stakeholders suggested that they start day programming. “There was a need for ‘outside the box’ thinking to creatively meet a need in our community, so we started the not for profit, and Outside the Box, was born,” says Hartman. “When we started this, I had no idea it would become what it is today.” From inception in 2008, Outside The Box has had a wait-list for participants. They rapidly outgrew the 400 sq ft borrowed conference room in the back of the Insight Consulting offices. Today, OTB services more than three hundred and fifty participants and are at maximum capacity in their 15,000 sq ft building. One of the first significant grants that gave us (OTB) a huge boost was the Impact 100 grant,” says Kelly, who is now on

the Board for Impact 100, “Impact 100 gives grass roots initiatives much needed infusion and it transformed everything for us at Outside The Box.” “We knew what we were doing was right for people (with special needs). Outside The Box is just the most amazing thing,” says Kelly with tears in her eyes. “It’s not easy working with a Medicaid-funded

program, which is why we rely so heavily upon generous donations, and thanks to wonderful people like Forrest and Charlotte Lucas, who help us with our annual fundraiser, we are able to keep our doors open.” A recent addition to the Outside The Box programming is an after school program supporting special needs students within

Hamilton Southeastern Schools, ages 13-22 held at Christ the Savior Lutheran. This enables families to continue their normal work day and know that their child is with a supportive peer group. This specialized after school program did not previously exist. One of the facilitators of the program is a former participant with Outside The Box. Outside The Box is based upon a foundation of collaboration, not competition. There is such a demand for their curriculum, OTB is considering starting consulting services to help other programs build their organization based upon the Outside The Box model. “People are successful at Outside The Box who have been kicked out of other programs around the city,” shares Kelly. “More individuals need to experience the type of programs we offer.”

Government funding, even when supplemented with fundraising, does not adequately support OTB to continue to grow to other facilities, but the curriculum based program, could help others to flourish and improve their lives. “Our future expansion will absolutely be dictated by the needs of the people we serve,” says Katy Bird, Executive Director. “As with any human services organization, there are sometimes regulatory and funding barriers to doing the right thing for people, which is why we have to think “Outside the Box, ” she continued. “We are privileged to work with such amazing, talented, and dedicated participants,” says Kelly. “OTB’s success is measured by the success of our participants!" Outside The Box is committed to promoting a culture built upon a foundation that promotes capabilities, self-advocacy, innovation, integrity, collaboration, professionalism and acceptance. for more information, visit OTBonilne.org.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH 15176 Blessed Mother Blvd. Fishers, IN 317-485-0150 sjvfishers.com

10 YEARS IN FAITH ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH CELEBRATES THEIR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Just off of the Hamilton Town Center roundabout on Southeastern Parkway lies a small, but vibrant Catholic parish by the name of St. John Vianney. St. John Vianney started with little, in-home Masses, but quickly grew into the 370 family parish it is today. Fast forward a decade and three different locations later, the church is still thriving and becoming more vast than ever before.

school.” Business Manager Larry Kunkel explained. “So in that, it will give us flexibility to have about 50% more worship space, and potentially allow us to have a Kindergarten-8th grade interim school.” He stressed that these plans will not be the final ones, that it’s just the beginning, and that the Church has even bigger dreams for the future.

“We are very excited, proud and most of all grateful for our 10 year anniversary.” parishioner Tiffany Chester said. To celebrate their anniversary, the Church is hosting many events that are not only for church members, but for the public as well. On July 15, they hosted a summer concert, chaired by Chester, with fireworks and food trucks, and on August 7 they will celebrate their Feast Day. Feast Day is open to the public, and consists of a Pitch-In Picnic, a 50/50 raffle, kid’s games and many more family friendly activities.

St. John Vianney’s priest, is Father Brian Dudzinski. The first and so far only Pastor to the church, he is very humble about how far the church has come under his guiding hand.

To coincide with the anniversary, the Church is planning big things for the future. One of the major projects St. John Vianney will be undertaking is expanding the Church into something greater. “Our next building that we build will be a parish life center, which will be used for a Church, offices, meeting space and possibly a

“It’s good to see the growth of the church, though obviously we’d like to see it grow more. We’ve been pretty blessed to have the opportunities we’ve had to expand to different locations.” Father Dudzinski said. “People always tell me I should be proud of myself for all that I’ve done, but until it’s actually built and really done, I don’t think I’ll see it as an accomplishment.” St. John Vianney hosts daily Masses during the week as well as multiple weekend Masses. To find dates and times for masses, as well as any additional information on the Church and their upcoming events, you can visit www.sjvfishers.com.
