MUDD MOM KNOWS BEST! Writer / Christy Watson
It’s the first day of summer break and the migration of kids on bikes to swim practice has begun. Wearing damp suits with goggles looped around their necks, this is an all too familiar ritual for Windemere Assistant Swim Coach Courtney Mudd, who at age 20 still embraces early morning swim practice as her normal routine. Part of the Mudd family swimming dynasty, she began her career on days just like these, swimming six and under at Legends Pool before quickly advancing to join brother Austin’s and sister Emily’s trailblazing as swimmers for Southeastern Swim Club, all while continuing the momentum for younger sibling Natalie. The entire Mudd family has had one foot in the pool for one reason or another for the past decade and they have excelled while doing it. Austin Mudd was first introduced to the sport back in 1999 “because he wasn’t good at any other sport and my mom wanted him to learn to swim,” jokes Courtney, who along with her two sisters followed in behind. “My
mom would be sitting in the stands chasing us around and thought that maybe we could ALL benefit from ALL the Mudd kids being on the team.” Mom must have known best, as Austin swam his way up the ranks to become a prestigious member of the 2007 HSE HS State Swim Team champions and went on to swim at Ohio Sate where he was a twotime Big Ten finalist and took 16th place in the World Championships in the 200-meter Individual Medley. Emily’s swimming prowess earned her 4 HSE Varsity letters and landed her a scholarship to swim at Liberty University; Courtney’s high school accolades earned her a spot as a current member of the Ball State swim team, and she’s studying exercise science. Now they are all on deck to support the youngest sibling, Natalie, who is the last Mudd on the move at HSE. She is the current school record-holder in the 100 back and a twoyear state finalist. All four Mudds are scholar athletes, both in high school and the three oldest at the collegiate level.
“It’s hard to say why I love swimming, exactly. I just know that without it I would most likely be lost because it has become a part of my everyday life and schedule,” says Courtney in between yelling out directions to the giggling 7- to 8-year-old boy swimmers at the Windemere pool. “I guess I have a passion for it because I found something that I enjoy and that I am good at, so I stuck with it.” That must be true for the entire clan: even mom Tina Mudd has developed a passion and affinity for the sport as she is the business manager of the Southeastern Swim Club. What started off as a whim for a mom trying to find a niche for her kid certainly panned out for this Fishers family. Four disciplined, intelligent, giving children emerged who all continue to be involved in the community and in the sport that made them who they are today.

THE FLATS AT FISHERS MARKETPLACE 9588 Ambleside Drive, Fishers, IN 46038 liveflatsatfishers.com / 317-567-4949
THE FLATS AT FISHERS MARKETPLACE
SERVES UP LUXURY, CONVENIENCE AND COMMUNITY It’s no secret that Fishers has been highlighted as one of the nation’s most attractive, most livable communities. With population numbers nearly doubling between 2000 and 2010, the town has welcomed young professionals, families and even retirees. Its rich culture, exceptional schools and booming economy have brought together work and play in a way that most communities only dream of. Taking those qualities into consideration, The Flats at Fishers Marketplace promises to bring everything you could possibly want into a 17.76-acre area. With a completion date set for August, the Flats will consist of four 3-story apartment buildings with 306 units and a state-of-the-art clubhouse at the heart of the Fishers Marketplace project. Located on 131st Street between Indiana 37 and Cumberland Road, the Fishers Marketplace project encompasses 105 acres of new development, including businesses such as City Barbeque, Bagger Dave’s, Which Wich, Lake City Bank, Zaxby’s, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen and Fancy Nails.
and proud to associate our business with Fishers and look forward to becoming a positive part of the community,” said Dobbs Ackermann, CEO of Ackermann Group, the property’s developer and manager. The Flats was designed with today’s renter in mind. Young professionals ages 20 to 34 are often looking for extended living space with “less commitment and more flexibility.” Ginger Collins, Vice President of Residential Services with the Ackermann Group, said, “The Flats will provide the comfort of luxurious amenities in your own back yard, from sharing a drink at the fire pit, to playing bocce ball with friends, to grilling out by the scenic pond. All of this comes with maintenance-free living, plus the conveniences of shopping, banking, dining and entertainment within walking distance.”
Apartments are ideal, but they often lack amenities such as outdoor entertaining spaces, which will be abundant at The Flats. Residents will enjoy a pool deck complete with a sound system, picnic area, bike storage and private garages. For the “Ackermann Group believes Fishers, Indiana fitness enthusiast, a fitness center with 15 pieces of equipment and a yoga studio will is one of the most exciting communities in the Midwest. Its community values, sense of be an extra perk. The Clubhouse serves balance, and leadership make it a town we up a coffee bar, game tables, double-sided want to be a part of. We feel very lucky fireplace with lounge and business center.
In addition to the luxuries offered on the grounds of the Flats, each unit boasts wellappointed, modern floor plans and amenities. The apartments feature 9-foot ceilings, deluxe kitchens with glass-top ranges, granite countertops and custom cabinetry and hardware. Floors are complete with fauxwood laminate and carpet. Bathrooms feature garden tubs, bedrooms will include walk-in closets and washer and dryer hookups are available in all units. Apartment layouts include studio-sized units starting at $763 a month up to a threebedroom, two-bathroom unit from $1,325 a month. Pets are also welcome and were included in the planning. Providing a community feel for residents is almost as equal to the Ackermann Group’s desire to become part of the Fishers community. They recently joined the Fishers Chamber of Commerce and the company is already looking for opportunities to support the community through charity events, entertainment and the arts. After all, those were the qualities that attracted Ackermann Group to Fishers in the first place.

Collins said the Ackermann Group recognized Fisher’s convenience factor. Since Interstate-69 is easy to access from The Flats, professionals who don’t work in Fishers will find their work commute easier than most. Serving more than three generations, the Ackermann Group is based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a real estate company that focuses on combining quality of lifestyle with urban revitalization through commercial and residential development, management and investment. The group has invested in properties in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio, Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky. For more information about The Flats at Fishers Marketplace, visit www.liveflatsatfishers.com. Apartments are already filling up, with 30 percent of the first building already leased. U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly meets with law enforcement, elected officials and community leaders Writer / Laurie Quinn
The Town of Fishers has a voice, and a mighty one it is! The voice rang loud enough to draw law enforcement, elected officials and community leaders from Hamilton and Boone counties together under one roof to have a roundtable discussion with U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly. What topic of discussion is strong enough to bring all of these bodies into one room? Drug abuse and rising heroin and prescription drug use in Hamilton and Boone counties. When residents of Fishers are approached about the subject of drugs, many say, “Oh well, it doesn’t happen here,” or “That isn’t a problem here.” What residents don’t realize is that according to whitehouse.gov, the number of meth lab seizure incidents in the state of Indiana increased 94 percent from 739 incidents in 2008 to 1,432 incidents in 2011. From 2009-2010, Indiana was one of the top 10 states for rates of drug abuse. “Every high school in Indiana has a drug problem,” says State Senator Jim Merritt, “and the risks of these decisions to abuse drugs just increased.” Senator Merritt authored a bill this year that increased the penalties for look-alike drugs that were previously receiving lesser sentencing. Plugging “drug abuse in Fishers” into Google produces two headlines that stand out. One is a news video about a mom who found out her son was having drugs sent to him in the mail in the packaging of a DVD case. When she opened the case, the DVD
State Senator Jim Merritt speaks up about drugs in Indiana
was in there but her son’s behavior made her look deeper. Cracking the binding of the case released crystals all over her table. She immediately called the police. The police informed her that the crystals were the drug Ecstasy. The video can be found on RTV6. com by searching the title “Fishers Teen Admits Buying Drugs on Dark Net: Hidden Online Market.” This video is barely a year old, dating back to May 3, 2013. The other headline that is an attention grabber involves a new synthetic drug called NBOMe that has tragically hit Fishers. This is a potent psychedelic drug that is perhaps the cause of the death of a local teen. Due to its potency, it can be more lethal than less potent drugs because it cannot be accurately dosed, which puts users at a higher risk of overdosing. On May 27, Senator Donnelly met with local law enforcement, elected officials and community leaders at Launch Fishers. “Some observations I heard from participants during this meeting included that as heroin use has increased, so too have related crimes, including homicides. In addition, prescription drug abuse continues to have a serious impact on communities in Hamilton and Boone counties,” Senator Donnelly stated. Meeting with participants offered some themes to keep in mind while working on dampening drug abuse locally, the first being education about the perils of prescription drug abuse. Secondly, our law enforcement and prosecutors face many challenges in
keeping the dealers and users off the streets. Lastly, using additional resources such as creating partnerships with federal law enforcement, including the DEA, and also using grants to provide financial support as law enforcement feverishly work to address this problem. While there is no single solution that will get heroin off our streets or end drug abuse altogether, Senator Donnelly wanted to emphasize “working together, there are steps we can take to make our communities safer.” One of the main, haunting questions is why is drug abuse (whether heroin, prescription, synthetic or others drugs) on the rise here? As parents, we should be asking ourselves this question to help our community make our schools and streets safer for our children. Researching this question, two reasons are repeatedly brought to light. The first is bullying and how it isn’t just at school anymore. With use of technology products in everyday life, bullying no longer stops once the child is in the safe walls of home. Being aware and involved in your child’s technology use is an important and vital role for parents today. Ask questions, get to know their friends and be there for them when they have questions or need support. The second reason that was brought up numerous times is the pressure children feel to live up to parents’ expectations. Whether it is in sports or with grades, children have an urge to impress their parents and the desire to know that their parents accept them. It can be seen at a young age by the child pleading, “Mommy, watch me do

this!” or “Daddy, did you see that goal I made?” The need for a parent’s acceptance is an important stepping stone in life. I followed up with Senator Donnelly a few weeks after the discussion here in Fishers and his response was, “Since my meeting, the Senate started working on a Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) funding bill, which allocates federal resources to keep America safe. I advocated for the bill to include a measure that would help address the alarming increase in heroin use and the ongoing prescription drug abuse epidemic through development of a comprehensive strategy focusing on stemming this crisis and am pleased to report that the legislation includes a similar initiative. The legislation would direct the Department of Justice to convene a taskforce that includes experts from law enforcement, medical, public health and education fields to devise and coordinate a response to help our communities.”
U.S. Senator Donnelly listens to community.

Our voice was loud and clear and the love of our community has shown our leaders that we want drugs off the streets here in Fishers. Fishers Police Chief George Kehl voiced, “Drug abuse negatively impacts individuals, families, businesses and government resources. I believe a combination of drug education and enforcement will help reduce the negative consequences that are associated with drug abuse. Articulating our concerns about any sort of drug abuse to our community leaders is what has led the issue into the Senator’s line of sight.” Keep up the good work, Town of Fishers!

THIS IS MY FRIEND TERRY AND I AM HIS SENSEI
I
t was a Tuesday night after a long Memorial Day weekend and I was watching television, flipping back and forth between America’s Got Talent and a baseball game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers were beating the Reds, so I spent most of my evening watching the “talent show on steroids” premier episode. That’s when a 20-something kid came out and said, “My name is Dustin’s Dojo and I’m a trained black belt and I learned to be a black belt at Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida.” He took a bow with his silent sidekick who was wearing a ski mask “This is my friend Terry and I am his sensei,” he added, followed by a roar of laughter from the audience. Over the course of the next five minutes I witnessed the funniest karate parody I’ve ever seen. Dustin’s Dojo put on a demonstration featuring the breaking of flimsy wood slats, 60 seconds of full-extension punches, and a face full of salt thrown into his eyes by Terry “when he least expected it.” Comedy genius was rewarded with a golden buzzer save by judge Howard Stern, which allowed them to go to the next round in New York this July.
I rewound the skit, watched it with my wife several times, and posted a link of the clip on my Facebook wall the following morning, noting, “This was the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time.”
Then something magical happened. One of my Facebook friends left a comment that Terry Terry was his wife’s cousin from the Indy area. These guys are locals? I had to meet them. So we headed west with a carload of people: our trusty videographer Mitch Jacki, and magazine designers and fans Alyssa Sander and Austin Vance. Our rendezvous spot was in Covington, Indiana at the famous Beef House Restaurant in their back parking lot. From there, Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry took us to two of their training locations in Fountain County: The “snake pit” and the “road that leads down to the river.” Dustin’s Dojo, donning his WWE Santino Marella t-shirt, treated us to an on-camera, in-character interview. He told us about his karate inspirations, being bullied in 3rd grade and roundhouse kicking his nemesis in the ear, the ever-presence of attackers and what they would do with the $1 million grand prize should they win America’s Got Talent. “We would build the Roger Baker Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida, Fountain County.” Off camera, Dustin Britton (Dustin’s Dojo) and Ed Kent (Terry Terry) talked about their backgrounds and the events that led up to their premier. They met through their church, where Britton is the youth minister. When they heard that America’s Got Talent
Go online to watch the full interview with Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry at TownePost.com
was doing auditions in Indianapolis, they came up with these two characters and fleshed out the skit on the drive over to the Indiana State Fairgrounds. “We were in character all day long,” said Britton. “The producers didn’t know what to think of us. At the end of the day, I broke down and laughed when he questioned my ‘world record’ for full extension punches thrown in 60 seconds. The entire room erupted.” Their act is like watching Napoleon Dynamite trying to understudy Bruce Lee. Dustin’s Dojo speaks loudly, as if you’ll believe him if he says it with pronounced authority. Terry Terry, whose name is a spoof on local horror movie host Sammy Terry, looks around aimlessly, trying to spot attackers. “Only locals would get the Sammy Terry reference,” Kent said with a laugh. With their newfound fame, Britton has created a website at DustinsDojo.com where he posts exercise videos, karate demonstrations and merchandise including a “Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida” t-shirt. As for America’s Got Talent, the two will be making their second-round appearance sometime in July. Be sure to watch on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. for their New York debut.

Face painting by Monica and Cheryl Moore was a big hit!
Jocelyn DiRienzo shows her gratitude for all of the support and love from the community.
In the face of tragedy arise the faces of strength, perseverance and love. Meet the DiRienzo family. Last summer, Anthony DiRienzo, age 21 months, was tragically killed at a Fishers licensed in-home daycare. While the void in their lives and hearts can never be filled, Danny and Jocelyn, along with their oldest son, Dominic, decided to turn their grief into an action of love. Anthony loved to play on the playground at New Hope Presbyterian Church and Preschool while waiting on Dominic to get released from class or after a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meeting held at the building. Jocelyn approached the director of the preschool, Karen Sutcliffe, saying she wanted to build a new playground for New Hope. Jocelyn, Danny and many friends set up an online donation site and took donations in hand with the original goal of $30,000. Jocelyn smiles as she recalls hoping to just be able to add a new piece of equipment to the existing playground. Little did the DiRienzo family know of the love and overwhelming generosity of the people who knew them and the kindness of strangers. Before they knew it, the DiRienzo family had raised over $46,000 to build a playground to honor Anthony—and build a playground, they did! The commercialgrade playground will supply hours of safe fun for children in Fishers.
Passersby can spot the blue playground while driving down Brooks School Road and 126th Street. The color blue was specifically chosen because of the color of Anthony’s eyes. The ribbon cutting for the playground was Saturday, June 14. The sun was shining and the support for the DiRienzo family was shining, too. Anthony’s Awesome Playground’s first project was a success! A tent was filled with donations that were gathered for a raffle for future endeavors of the project. Buffalo Wild Wings and Marco’s Pizza catered food while GiGi’s Cupcakes and Snowie vending trucks came to provide dessert for the attendees. The Pacers showed up and they played basketball with the kids. Bounce U provided two inflatable games for the kids to play. Monica and Cheryl Moore provided face painting. After a touching speech by Jocelyn, the DiRienzo family released balloons in honor of each member of their family. To know the DiRienzos is to love them. His family has shown immense strength to honor him in such a meaningful and powerful manner and to provide our community with a symbol and reminder that human kindness is overflowing in the Town of Fishers.
New Hope staff came to show support.

ishers employees have been giving back to the local community for many years. In 2007, The Town of Fishers G.I.V.E. Committee was created to unite many fundraising efforts that focused on charity-based initiatives. G.I.V.E. is an acronym for Generosity, Involvement and Volunteerism by Employees. Each year, employees hold events to give back to Fishers and surrounding communities. Annual events include a food drive benefiting Delaware Township Food Pantry and a toy drive for the Good Samaritan Network. Employees also hold bake sales and raffles, and host the popular huge inflatables booth at the Fishers Freedom Festival to collect money for a partnered organization for the year. Aimee Ector, Human Resources Assistant for Fishers, shared, “We just completed a really fun event called Pie-in-the-Face, where department heads and elected officials volunteer to get a pie-in-the-face. Town of Fishers employees buy tickets and vote for their favorite contestant. The four contestants with the most votes received a pie-in-the-face at our annual Employee Appreciation Cookout.” Aimee also noted, “Since our inception, we are proud to have
given back almost $40,000 to the local community, as well as truckloads of food and toys!” Many organizations have benefited from the generosity of Fishers Employees and their fundraising efforts. A few of the previous beneficiaries include Chaucie’s Place, Hamilton County Cancer Services, Hamilton County Healthy Families, Hoosier Burn Camp, Humane Society for Hamilton County, Janus Developmental Services, Kammy’s Kause, Prevail and TherAplay. The G.I.V.E. Committee selected Promising Futures of Central Indiana as their choice for their 2014 partnership. Promising Futures of Central Indiana, a division of Children’s Bureau, Inc., provides resources to develop healthy relationships and create positive changes for youth and families. Terri Parke, Director of Promising Futures and Community Partners for Child Safety, related the history of the organization: “In 1973, a group of concerned citizens met to discuss a lack of facilities for troubled youth in Hamilton County. They incorporated later that year as Hamilton Centers, Inc. Funding from a Lilly Endowment grant allowed the first group home to open in Arcadia in 1975. Hamilton Centers, later known as Hamilton Centers Youth Services Bureau, was
founded to provide shelter for abandoned, neglected, abused, homeless or predelinquent youth in Hamilton County. The agency has evolved in response to community needs to provide programs to meet the physical, social, emotional, educational and self-discovery needs of atrisk youth and their families in Hamilton and surrounding counties. She goes on to say, “As the needs of our young people have changed over time, so have the scope and type of services offered by Promising Futures of Central Indiana. [As of January 1, 2010, Hamilton Centers Youth Service Bureau, Inc. changed its name to Promising Futures of Central Indiana.] In December 2013, Promising Futures merged with Children’s Bureau, Inc.” The impact Promising Futures has on Hamilton County is noteworthy. The organization has provided preventive and intervention services for over 40 years. Promising Futures provides a variety of services including: Safe Sleep classes, Counseling Services, Supervised Visitation, Anger Management, and a Host Homes Program. The G.I.V.E. Committee donation for 2014 will help support the Safe Sleep Program. The goal of this program is to decrease the number of infant deaths related to unsafe sleep practices. Classes are offered once a month in Hamilton, Tipton, Madison and Hancock counties. These

classes provide education on important areas of child sleep safety including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Shaken Baby Syndrome, and safe sleep principles for newborns and infants. Participants in the Safe Sleep program are pregnant or have an infant under the age of 12 months and have been identified by a community agency or other entity as a family that would benefit from educational and/or financial resources to provide a safe sleep environment for their child. Participants will be offered guidance through materials they can take home, classes they will attend, and the Infant Survival Kit they receive that includes a Pack-n-Play, wearable blanket, pacifier, and safe sleep recommendations. The G.I.V.E. Committee donation will certainly impact the future health and wellbeing of Fishers and Hamilton County residents. Fishers employees are making a difference in the community they live

TOM ABERNETHY’S IBA
AN ACADEMY OF BASKETBALL & LIFE LESSONS Writer / Ray Compton
As he prepares for a May afternoon practice at the Indiana Basketball Academy, Eliot Burgett wears a blue jersey top No. 21, a replica of one worn by Indiana Pacers star forward David West.
IU Basketball 1976 Seniors (left to right): Bobby Wilkerson, Tom Abernethy, Scott May, Jim Crews, Quinn Buckner
It is likely, if not a certainty, that this episode of imitation will represent the closest the eight-year-old grade school student will get as a player in the National Basketball Association. Indeed, the upcoming workout is not a drill to fine-tune the skills of budding young NBA superstars. And this limited proximity to professional basketball is just fine with Josh’s mother, who has regularly made dozens of trips in the last three years from her home in northeast Fishers to the basketball/life education center in Carmel.

TOP 10 QUESTIONS FOR FORMER SOUTH BEND ST. JOSEPH PLAYER, INDIANA UNIVERSITY HOOSIER AND LOS ANGELES LAKER, GOLDEN STATE WARRIOR AND INDIANA PACER TOM ABERNETHY YOU HAD MANY THRILLS AS A BASKETBALL PLAYER. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MOMENT? “Probably when we [St. Joseph] won our sectional. We played at Notre Dame and beat [South Bend] Adams. I had something like 30 points and 20 rebounds. It was a great moment.” CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE FIRST MEETING BETWEEN INDIANA COACH BOB KNIGHT AND YOUR MOTHER? “It was in our living room and my mother grilled him. She was tough on him. They had been recruiting another player and she wanted to make sure that they wanted me. But I wanted to go to IU even if I hadn’t played basketball.” HOW DIFFICULT WAS THE 1975 NCAA TOURNAMENT LOSS (92-90) TO KENTUCKY WHEN STALWART SCOTT MAY SUFFERED A BROKEN ARM DURING THE SEASON? “We weren’t ready for the season to end. Some of us went on vacation to Florida after the season and it was a terrible week.” WHO WAS THE TOUGHEST PLAYER YOU GUARDED? “Adrian Dantley [Notre Dame]. He was a bear to guard. His body was so strong and you did everything you could to keep him off the boards.” HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING ON YOUR “SHORT” BASKETBALL SHORTS FROM YOUR INDIANA PLAYING DAYS? “No, no way. And my shirt probably wouldn’t fit much better.” WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO PLAY WITH KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR DURING YOUR TIME WITH THE LAKERS? “It was great. He was unbelievable. My locker was next to his and I was so impressed with his work ethic. And I learned how to pass him the ball.” DID YOU EVER GUARD LARRY BIRD? DID HE TRASH TALK YOU? “I guarded him a little. He never said that much.” WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN THE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE, INSIDE MOVES, WITH JOHN SAVAGE? “It was filmed when I was with Golden State and there was a scene that was to be at one of our games. They showed me dribbling the ball up court and the announcer saying my name. It was cool.” WHAT WAS YOUR ROLE IN THE MOVIE HOOSIERS? “I was asked to be a technical advisor. I helped with the players and designed a couple of plays. I didn’t design the ‘picket fence.” WHICH GAME DO YOU PREFER, COLLEGE OR NBA? “I love the NBA. The biggest change has been the athleticism of the players. You can’t imagine a 6-7 power forward.”

“We love the IBA (Indiana Basketball Academy),” said Cara Burgett. “It teaches the kids more than basketball. They train the kids hard but they also work on self-confidence and other things that kids can take away with them. It doesn’t matter how good someone is. The staff works with every kid the same way.”
Of course, there have been future basketball kingpins who polished their budding skills on the two courts at IBA or at the satellite facilities in Zionsville or Lawrence. Indiana and Park Tudor star Yogi Farrell, Butler guard Kellen Dunham, and current high school standouts Ryan Cline (Carmel) and Derrik Smits (Zionsville) have graduated from Abernethy-led classes. Additionally, numerous other area players–such as Gordon Hayward of Brownsburg–have played in games in the Carmel facility.
And those words are exactly what Tom Abernethy has hoped to hear since he opened IBA in 1995. Not all of the approximately 25,000 young players who have attended camps at IBA in the last 19 years have evolved into college or pro basketball performers, but most, if not all, have learned life lessons from Abernethy, chief aide Andrew White, and a battalion of college coaches such as Jim Crews (St. Louis, Evansville and Army) and Todd Lickliter (Marian, Butler and Iowa).
Abernethy confesses that his camps are probably more designed for the rank-and-file players than those who hope to take the AAU circuit to stardom. “AAU makes a lot of sense for some players,” Abernethy assessed, “and the popularity of AAU basketball has grown. But we are not a tournament venue and our market has expanded. We are coming off our two busiest years.”
Among those teachings is that character counts—for all camp graduates. “Every kid is valuable to us,” said Abernethy, whose basketball resume includes successful stints in high school (South Bend St. Joseph), college (Indiana University), professional (Los Angeles, Golden State and the Pacers) and overseas (Italy). “The kids know we care about them and the parents know we care about their kids. We try to help every kid and especially those who may not have a future in sports. We want to get them ready for the real world.”
One of the most hectic time frames in the gymnasiums in Carmel, Zionsville and Lawrence starts in June when summer camps begin. Abernethy and his staff will be buckling up for one-hour lunch shooting camps: “to get your shot fixed”; speed, strength and skill training sessions; shooting practices; and overall extended camp campaign sessions that stretch into three hours.

“I wasn’t that nervous about the project—because of my faith,” said Abernethy, whose wife Susie serves as the unofficial Chief Financial Officer. “Things haven’t always gone exactly perfect, but we have had success.” One of the things Abernethy teaches campers is that the challenges of life can present potential turnovers for participants. For him, those times included when his father died when he was 10. A few years later, a brother died. “Tough things happen in life,” Abernethy noted. “We tell our kids that you can’t give up.”
Not to be forgotten is the availability of a Bible Basics camp, cementing the strong Christian values that radiate from the 60-year-old Abernethy. “God has made this whole thing work for us,” said Abernethy, who left the commercial real estate world in the 1990s to build the IBA. He acknowledges it was a leap of faith–his faith in the Supreme Being–that helped him bridge this chapter of his life.

The Abernethy family learned their “never give up” mode with twins Matt and Andy. After enduring difficulties off the court in college at Pacific, the pair transferred and are now enjoying successful adult careers. And senior Abernethy’s career marched on despite disappointing basketball setbacks. After his South Bend St. Joseph team (which included another Indiana star, John Laskowski) lost in the sectional during his junior season, Abernethy and St. Joseph came back and won the sectional a March later. Following the stunning upset by Kentucky in the 1975 NCAA tournament, Abernethy and the Hoosiers beat Michigan in the NCAA championship game to wrap up an unbeaten season in 1976. Eventually, life’s journey took Abernethy to his basketball school on Bauer Drive West in Carmel. And one of his earliest challenges was when he coached a seventh and eighth grade basketball team that included his youngest son, Todd (a future player at Mississippi). Abernethy took his team to a tournament in Florida and played against a team from Ohio. On the Ohio roster was a seventh grader named LeBron James. “I had never heard of LeBron,” admitted Abernethy. “Todd scored a lot of points early, but then LeBron guarded him and shut him down.” But during the rematch the next summer, the Indiana team defeated LeBron & Company, 52-51. “That was fun coaching those kids,” recalled Abernethy. Today Abernethy enjoys that same thrill when he sees an Eliot Burgett take the court, wearing his David West jersey and learning another lesson about life on or off the basketball court.

“I always wanted to combine my gifts in basketball with a business setting,” said Abernethy, who has found that parents and their kids are frequently repeat customers. “It’s all about how the kids are treated and how they are taught. There’s no secret to it. If the parents know that their kids are being treated well, they are likely going to be repeat customers.”

INDIANA’S NEW SECOND CHANCE LAW Writer / Mario Massillamany
We all make mistakes in our youth. Sometimes even as adults. Luckily for us, the Indiana General Assembly just revised the expungement laws (Indiana Code 35-5-5.5 and 35-38-8, 9) to give Hoosiers a second chance. The Legislature understood that old arrests and convictions can prevent you from getting a job, renting an apartment, serving in the military, or participating in service groups. Known as the “Second Chance Law,” the new law allows for sealing arrest records and expunging certain convictions.
SEALING PRIOR ARRESTS
Sometimes a person will get arrested but the charges will be dismissed due to mistaken identity, not committing the crime, or lack of evidence. But those arrests still appear in that person’s record. Under the new law, if you were arrested but never convicted of the crime charged, you can have the arrest sealed one year later. This can be vital for future employment, as the arrest will not appear in a background check, nor would you need to disclose the arrest on a job application.
EXPUNGING YOUR RECORD
If you were convicted of a misdemeanor or Class D Felony that was reduced to a misdemeanor (AMS), you can petition the court for an expungement five years after the conviction. For D Felony convictions that did not result in a bodily injury, the waiting period is eight years from the date of conviction. For more serious felonies, the waiting period will be either eight or ten years and can require written consent from the

If you have multiple convictions that qualify, you must expunge them at the same time. If your convictions occurred in the same county, you can file them under one petition. If they are from multiple counties in Indiana, you must file separately in each county. There are no filing fees for sealing records but there is a $141 state civil filing fee for expunging convictions. Due to the intricacy of the law and only getting one chance at expungement in the State of Indiana, it is highly recommended that you consult an attorney. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that restores all of your civil rights, including the right to vote and the right to own firearms. Take advantage of the new law to clear those youthful (or adult) indiscretions from your record.

ifty years ago, acting on an idea to become a missionary, share his faith with others, and perhaps feed his sense of adventure, Father Phil Bowers embarked on his journey to serve God as a priest. Now, on the occasion of the Golden Anniversary of his ordination, Father Phil, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish at Geist, has announced his retirement. Parishioners knew the time was coming, and perhaps chose to forget about it; perhaps many even prayed faithfully to the Holy Father that Fr. Phil would stay the father eternally. Many would describe the distinguished pastor as the rock and glue that holds the parish together. But, after serving the parish for more than 20 years, the end of an era has arrived. We meet in Father Phil’s office to reflect on his time in the priesthood. As he ushers me in, I find it impossible to imagine a new leader. His office, adorned with a plethora of Purdue memorabilia; his persona, that of an eternal Boiler fan just as much on the altar as off. His homilies throughout the years have often been sprinkled with comments about the game, or about racing back from the game just in time to say mass. The Boilermaker banter is difficult for this Hoosier Alum and fan to hear. But I quickly remember the lesson on forgiveness and let it slide. We sit down to talk, and it seems parish life is carrying on as normal. It hits me that his days of active priesthood are waning, and I begin to feel a profound sense of loss. I lead off with a litany of pleas like, “But you’re too young,” and “It’s too soon.” True to form, Father counters with “Change is good. Without change, you don’t have growth.”
And growth is exactly what Father Phil has brought to the parish during his tenure. Upon his arrival at the parish in 1993, Fr. Phil launched his very first capital fundraising campaign. That first campaign took the parish from a few families meeting at a storefront on 96th Street to a parish of more than 8,000 families gathering in the beautiful building that now stands off Fall Creek Road. Since then, he’s overseen the construction of the education wing, the gym and parish life center, football and baseball fields, parish rectory and so much more. A monumental task for any pastor, Fr. Phil guided the parish through it with ease. Though he claims he’s not characteristically humble, he humbly says, “We got through it because we’re blessed with a tremendous amount of talent among the parishioners. They’re capable of doing everything. People were generous, and they sacrificed their time and talent to make it successful. Others handled design, colors and specs, so I was able to focus on the fundraising.” While Father Phil credits the incredibly capable, talented and generous parishioners, it’s undeniable that his fundraising efforts were so successful the parish was debt-free within two years after the church was constructed. As Father Phil continues to sing the praises of the parishioners, I smile as I remind him that tremendously capable and talented parishioners are very passionate and have very strong opinions. I add that it takes a special leader to navigate that. He nods and grins widely in agreement and says, “It all works because we’re in a faith-friendly environment. It tempers things and reminds people that the church says life is sacred and we all are called to be respectful. So that’s what happens.”

YOU CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT IT’S LIKE AND WHAT AN HONOR IT IS TO BE INVITED INTO PEOPLE’S LIVES TO SHARE IN THE MOST INTIMATE EMOTIONS, THE JOYS AND SORROWS OF THEIR LIVES IN THE MOST INTENSE FORM. TO EARN THAT KIND OF TRUST IS VERY HUMBLING.
Just like the successes of the parish came together serendipitously, it’s clear there was a path that led Father Phil to Holy Spirit Parish. Although he often delights the parish with stories about his past as pastor at Purdue’s Newman Center, most cannot remember a time when he was not part of the parish. Like Jesus’ parables, the stories seem almost mythical. Father Phil explains that his stay on campus was supposed to last just four weekends. “I was assigned to help out while two of the four priests were completing their graduate degrees. I stayed 21 years and completed my graduate degree, too.” While the students were having the time of their lives, so was Father Phil. “I wasn’t an administrator in charge of fundraisers, so I had plenty of time to be with the students and minister to them. With 5,000 students at mass every weekend, there was never a dull moment,” he says. His ministry didn’t extend just to students. He says “I got to know professors, people in the athletic department, and often got invited to events with guest speakers.” We reminisce about campus days a while longer, then he takes me back to another wonderful time in his priesthood, his time at Immaculate Conception Baganga Parish in the Philippines. “It was a wonderful time. The people were the most delightful I’d met,” he begins. He describes how the Filipino culture, being very religious and incorporating expressive devotions and processions, taught him a lot. “The Filipinos showed me how the relationship with God can be seen like God is a very good friend.” Father Phil says that although learning the Cebuan language was a challenge, everything about their kindness, welcoming nature and strong sense of family was wonderful and inspirational.
Now, after five decades filled with many exciting adventures and countless ministries, it’s time for the good shepherd to leave his flock. “I’m not leaving, I’m just moving down the street,” he reassures me. Which means, I will still pass him during my morning jog. He says he’ll stay busy filling in for other area priests, and meet new people while visiting other parishes for the weekend. The slower pace and the opportunity to get a broader vision of the whole diocese will be enjoyable, but he has a much simpler goal in mind, “I plan to make it to all the Purdue home games, tailgate, have fun and not have to race back to say mass.” As he offers his final reflections on his priesthood, Father Phil says it’s all that he thought it would be and much more. “You can’t imagine what it’s like and what an honor it is to be invited into people’s lives to share in the most intimate emotions, the joys and sorrows of their lives in the most intense form. To earn that kind of trust is very humbling.” Father Phil has surely earned that trust and more. He was chosen to serve two parishes, each for more than three times the length of a priest’s usual assignment. His absence at the parish will leave a deep void for some time to come. Though the new priest, yet unnamed, who follows him has gigantic shoes to fill (perhaps not unlike the famed red Bruno Maglis), Father Phil has some advice: “I’ll tell him he’s very lucky to have this parish. Ask what better looks like. Show them it’s time to trade up and put energy into what needs to be done.”

Sage advice indeed from the wise father, as always. No matter what, it will be a big adjustment for a large parish that is so used to his no-nonsense, straight-talking, humorous manner. His poignant “homework” assignments have never failed to keep the congregation on the right path for the week. So what is his parting homework? “You should know I am not management, I am only labor. Pay attention: This is CHRIST’S church. So make it the parish HE wants it to be.”
And so we shall, Father Phil. After all, “THE MASS NEVER ENDS. IT MUST BE LIVED. SO LET US GO FORTH IN PEACE TO LOVE AND SERVE THE LORD. THANKS BE TO GOD. ALLELUIA!”
Father Phil and Mika Shaw at her First Communion.

PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT HOSTING TWO UNIQUE JULY EVENTS
Ritchey Woods Pavillion
ROUND THE CAMPFIRE – DOG DAYS
Generally speaking, bonfires are prohibited at the local parks in Fishers. But on this particular occasion, the Department of Parks & Recreation is not only encouraging it…they are doing all the work for you. Bring your campfire favorites and spend the evening at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve around a campfire built especially for you. Enjoy roasting hot dogs or making s’mores (The Parks

and Recreation Department will provide the marshmallows) while exploring fun topics during the evening. One of the topics will cover an explanation for the expression “the dog days of summer” and talk about the canines that call Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve their home. The fee is $4 per resident or $6 per non-resident, with an adult registration required to accompany child registrations, and the event will take place on July 11 from 7 p.m.–9 p.m.
Chalk this one up to extreme creativity: The Fishers Parks & Recreation Department will host the 2nd Annual Mud Day at Cyntheanne Park on Saturday, July 12 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. They will combine 20 tons of topsoil and 20,000 gallons of water and create every 6-year-old’s fantasy and every mother’s nightmare! Parents will need to overcome their initial reservations because
this is a fun activity that had kids, parents and the Fishers Parks & Recreation staff crawling around in the mud last year. This rain or shine event is for children and adults of all ages. Parents, supervision is required and don’t forget the clean-up towels to prevent your car from becoming equally dirty. For questions, contact 317-595-3150 or see fishers.in.us.

BACKPACKS FOR KIDS Writer / Fishers Community Newsletter
Wait a minute, didn’t school just let out? Yet, here we are discussing backpacks for kids. Believe it or not, Jeff Hern, Fall Creek Township Trustee, and his team have been discussing backpacks and school supplies for the fall of 2014 for several months now. On July 30, the Fall Creek Township Office will be distributing backpacks and school supplies to families in need. “It’s important for kids to start off their school year with the supplies they need to be successful in the classroom,” said Hern. “I’ve volunteered at my son’s school and was surprised to see children without adequate
supplies. We live in a predominately affluent area, yet many families struggle in providing what some would think of as basic needs. Our hope is to help these children get started on a solid footing with tools they need to do their best in school.”
Township clients. The office will also have applications for free and reduced lunches and textbooks for Hamilton Southeastern Schools.
“This is the fourth year for this program,” said Hern. “The backpacks and supplies Clients with school-age children receiving are collected through donations and township assistance within the past six community room rental fees, thus allowing months will be sent letters inviting them to us to redistribute money back into the pick up backpacks and supplies during office community to provide additional assistance hours on July 30. We also take referrals to families in need.” from other agencies or those that know of a family in need. Backpacks and supplies are Donations are being collected until July available on a first come, first served basis 18. Items needed include: 12-count box of but we have always had an ample amount pencils, glue sticks, scissors, filler packs of and typically share overage with Delaware paper (wide ruled), one-subject notebooks 48 / FISHERS / JULY 2014 / atFishers.com

(wide ruled), red and green folders, 24box of crayons, 12-count colored pencils, 8-count classic color markers, pink erasers, highlighters, rulers and index cards. Donations can be dropped off at the Fall Creek Township Office or at any Fishers Fire Station.
This program is an excellent way to involve your children in learning about giving back to others and the community. Backpacks come in a variety of styles and patterns. Have your child pick one out next time you are shopping or perhaps grab an extra set of one of the supplies listed above. Fishers
is constantly being praised and highlighted as one of the top 10 safest, happiest or friendliest towns in the country. Let’s keep that track record up by teaching our children it takes all of us coming together and helping each other to keep Fishers great!

FISHERS TRACK CLUB IS ON FIRE! Writer / Kara Reibel
In his fifth year as head coach of the Fishers Fire Youth Track and Field, Chris Norris has seen his club take off, like a sprinter out of the blocks. Averaging 150-200 kids each year, being organized is key to their success. Fortunately, aside from Coach Norris, there are at least ten other volunteer coaches who share a passion for track and field. Norris graduated from Franklin Central HS, where he was a 1986 State Hurdle Champion, a 2-time Indiana All-State and All-American. He continued his success through his college years at Indiana State University where he earned five all-Miami Valley Conference awards. He even represented the USA in 1986, participating in the International Sports Exchange. As a USA Track and Field certified coach, Norris has coached many kids who have
gone on to perform in college. He is now bringing his coaching skill set to the kids in Fishers who also love track and field sports.
Even though most events (except relays) are based on individual efforts, Norris has created a team environment. “In addition to the coaches, we have created a mentoring system, where the older kids help out and coach the younger kids, offering a hand and encouragement,” says Coach Norris.
Track season “runs” from May through July. Having formed a conference with three other local area track clubs, meets are held weekly. The team members are in grades 1 through 8. Using Riverside as their home The track season culminates with regionals base, Fishers Fire hosts many of these meets. and the Junior Olympics. Last year Fishers Fire had 23 kids earn spots to compete The meets are held on Saturdays, typically at the Junior Olympics. Coach Norris starting at 9 a.m. and ending around 3 estimates they will have 10-15 kids qualify this year, with the meet to be held in p.m. The sports include all of the track and Humboldt, Texas, July 21-27. Best of luck field events—even the triple jump and to those who qualify and to all the runners javelin. The most popular event at every who burn up the track! meet, however, is the pee-wee run, for preschoolers. “Watching 50 preschoolers Fishers Youth Fire Track and Field may be run down the track all at once is adorable,” says Norris, “and they each earn a medal for found on Facebook or by emailing Coach Norris, chris_nrrs@yahoo.com, for more participating.” information. 50 / FISHERS / JULY 2014 / atFishers.com

MOM OF THE YEAR UPDATE Writer / Laurie Quinn
Have you seen our Mom of the Year lately? Between working and taking care of her family, she is a busy woman. Courtney Cooley revealed to me that she had always yo-yoed up and down with her weight. When her daughter was diagnosed with a health issue, Courtney fell into bad eating habits. She has seen first-hand what maintaining an unhealthy weight can do to a person. Members of her family have suffered numerous health ailments due to being overweight, and she does not want that to happen to her. As you may recall from our May issue featuring our Mom of the Year, Coach Roz Harris with Get In Shape for Women donated
a 6-week package of personal fitness to Courtney. After hearing Courtney’s story and getting to know her, Coach Roz bumped it up to an 8-week session without blinking an eye. The personal coaching session and hands-on training that Coach Roz is working on with Courtney will shape Courtney’s unhealthy lifestyle into a one that Courtney will be proud of, and that she can pass on to her girls. Courtney wants to physically be there for her children and watch them grow to become women. Continue to watch for updates of Courtney and this journey. If you would like to reach out to Coach Roz, stop in to see her at Get In Shape for Women, 11720 Olio Road (in the Kroger plaza), or call her at 317-348-8600.

FLAVA FRESH ! MULTICULTURAL ART EXHIBIT COMES TO FISHERS! by Kara Reibel
D. DelReverda-Jennings is an artist in the truest sense of the word. As a child, her grandparents identified her as an old soul, creating works of art far beyond her young years. Encouraging this wonderful means of self-expression, she was guided and supported to cultivate her artistic inclinations. A prolific, award-winning interdisciplinary artist whose visual work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Canada and the Caribbean, DelReverda-Jennings has select pieces held in a number of private and corporate collections. To give back to the arts community, DelReverda-Jennings created the Flava Fresh ! art exhibition series to celebrate newly discovered, emerging and established artists, as well as female artists who are beginning to gain a presence in the mainstream arts world.
The Fishers Arts Council is thrilled to be hosting this art series, which began over 15 years ago (originally called “Celebration of Spirit”). Other host sites include the Artsgarden and Clowes Hall. “The Flava Fresh ! Art Exhibit is an incredible collection of eclectic and exciting pieces,” says FAC Board Member Paige Hunkin. Flava Fresh ! is an annual juried, multiple exhibition series celebrating the visual arts. The multicultural exhibition experience extends over a six-month period with five separate showcases, culminating in an artists’ awards ceremony at the end of the series, held in October. “This year we are blessed to have been invited to exhibit at the beautiful Fishers Town Hall,” says DelReverda-Jennings. The series offers an opportunity to those artists whose work falls outside of the
mainstream and is seldom, if ever, found in traditional art venues. The goal is to bring awareness of these diverse artists to the public. What began for DelReverda-Jennings over 15 years ago has now become a part-time endeavor for her. Well-connected in the national arts scene, she has helped launch many artists by gaining positive exposure for their work. “It is all part of my initiative to cultivate artists and art connections, in addition to all of the annual exhibitions,” says DelReverda-Jennings, “and this validation is important to help the artists reinforce their belief in their work, creative voice, growth and career development.” Flava Fresh ! can be found on Facebook and the IndyArts website, indyarts.org. The exhibit runs from July 14–September 6. Viewing is free to the public.

Who knew Farkle could teach you math skills?
Turner Takes on Summer Math Is your child struggling with math or trying to become the best in their class? Well Mathnasium is the place for them. Mathnasium is located in Fishers at 11789 Commercial Dr. right behind Target. At Mathnasium, they have customized learning plans to meet each student’s needs. They use the Mathnasium Method™ which uses games to connect math with real life functions. They offer homework help and fill in the gaps in a student’s knowledge. The program is available for second through twelfth graders. They also use the Mathnasium hour where students will work on the math they need help in then they will do work in their workout book which is fun math. They will then play games that involve math skills. The program is not only for those who may struggle with math but also for students who want to excel in math and improve their already high grades. I interviewed two students there; Payton, who enrolled the very first day of enrollment and Kristiana who has not even been enrolled a month yet. The following is what they had to say! When I asked how much improvement they had seen so far in their math performance, Payton said she had seen a lot of improvement in the few months since she joined and Kristiana had seen a little bit of improvement after not even a month of working with the Mathnasium program. When asked how Mathnasium has helped them with math, they both said Mathnasium had made it make sense with games and fun story problems. When asked what their favorite part of the hour is, they both said playing fun games like Farkle. I then asked them how the instructors helped make the math understandable. Payton said that the instructors explained the subject thoroughly and pointed out the mistakes. Kristiana said they taught the math well and helped her when she needed help. Mathnasium was founded by a teacher out of L.A., Larry Martinek, who has worked on improving his methods with his students for
Writer / Turner Edwards
thirty years. He got the trademark protection for the phrase and called it the Mathnasium Method™. He was inspired by his son to create the method. The Fishers location currently has multiple students at the facility working one or two years ahead of their grade level. They started the business in Fishers because there isn’t anything else like it in our town. The tutoring is individualized and all the work is done at the center rather than homework to do on their own at home. All work is checked and graded so that the students can see what they did wrong. Mathnasium will also help with homework during the school year. All Mathnasium lessons are based on common core curriculum in the United States. Starting price differs by age group but ranges in the two hundreds and is like a gym membership; students can come in anytime through the week. To get started Students come in and take an oral assessment to see what they need to work on. So if you need to stretch those math muscles, Mathnasium is the right brain exercises for you. Go in and take an assessment to see how they can help you. On my visit, I sat down with owner and operator, Chris Lemieux. After our interview and after I had finished speaking with the students, Chris invited me to a game of Farkle! I had a lot of fun! They are open from three to seven Monday through Thursday and one to five on Sunday just west of target. Visit their website at mathnasium.com/fishers or call them at (317)288-4306.
Turner is a student at FCI. He is the older brother to Brewer Edwards and the son of Clark and Deidra Edwards. He loves hanging out with his friends and helping neighbors out in a pinch. If you have a story you would like Turner to write about contact him via email at turneratfishers@yahoo.com.
