FHS WINTER GUARD COMPETES IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Writer / Demi Lawrence

Fishers High School’s winter guard team of 22 students placed 6th out of more than 300 schools at the Winter Guard International World Championships competition in Dayton, Ohio on April 6-8.

The theme of the show this year was Where The Buffalo Roamed, and it showed the movement of the Native Americans from present day East Coast to the West. Hubbard and other directors found it difficult to choreograph and depict such a delicate topic, but despite this trial, Hubbard said that the students portrayed the perfect message.

WGI brings hundreds of students together every year from around the country, and even from around the world, to perform and compete in several minute-long shows involving a mix of choreography, flag throwing, riffle throwing and much more. This placement alone is enough to turn heads in the winter guard world, but considering that this was FHS’s first appearance at WGI, it made the honor even more exciting for students and Varsity Director Kylee Hubbard. “They went in ranked around 4th through 6th, and for their first time at WGI that is amazing,” Hubbard said. “That’s hard to do because a lot of these groups have been there for a long time, so to have Fishers come barreling through and get 6th place is great.” Originally from Georgia, Hubbard became involved in guard in high school. Previously a cheerleader, Hubbard went out on a limb and decided to try guard instead. The guard competed in the scholastic division of WGI, as well as in the open class. Out of three classes, open guard is the medium class in between A class, being the lowest, and world class, being the highest. “In open class, you have a little bit more room to grow, and you can try harder things, even if you aren’t perfect at it,” Hubbard said. “I like open class because it’s a good sweet spot that allows room for

I thought the kids, for their first year being competitive and asking them to do a show that is so sophisticated and mature, did such an amazing job.” Though winter guard season is over, Hubbard is already thinking about next season as well as summer season with marching band. During the fall, the guard plans to fine tune their techniques and plans in hopes to come out strong in the winter and be competitive at WGI World Championships once again. “It’s only up from here, and I am very excited for next year and the years to come,” Hubbard said with a smile. “They have a lot of momentum right now.” If you are interested in auditioning for fall guard or marching band at FHS, auditions are May 9, 11, 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fishers High School in the Performance LGI Room. In order to be on the winter guard team, you must start in fall guard. It is open to any seventh grader going into eight grade and all students planning to attend FHS.

Cindy Holladay, mother of three, found a church home at New Hope Presbyterian, where she serves on a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) committee.

Around this same time, one of Cindy’s good friends, Amie, was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed to have a series of radiation treatments. “She has three daughters who are all around the same age as mine,” Cindy says. “Two of them were in school, but she needed someone to watch her 3-year old on some of the days when she had treatments. So, I watched her daughter for a couple hours one day a week when she had treatment, and my daughter loved it. It was truly a blessing for us.”

Anyone who knows Cindy can’t help but see a positive spark plug who ignites the energy within others around her to make something encouraging happen. For instance, after seeing the need for water in Flint, Michigan in 2016, she started a water drive. As a result, in less than two weeks, her MOPS group raised 77 cases, 32 gallons and Another MOPS service project headed up nine liters of water. by Cindy included a donation of diapers,

wipes and feminine products to a food pantry. Her MOPS group spent service funds and donated more than 80 items to the Fishers United Methodist Church food pantry. She even organized a tour of the pantry for moms and their kids. “I want my kids to see that life is bigger than what we’re doing in just our family,” Cindy says. “I want to give my kids awareness that there’s not always food on everyone’s table and not everyone is healthy.” After her service project initiatives, Cindy was asked to become a co-coordinator for MOPS. She and her steering committee organize the meetings held twice monthly by arranging


for guest speakers, planning craft projects, taking care of correspondence, marketing and much more. In the fall of 2016, she organized a service project of collecting 30 pounds of pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, and she also collected cards for a young girl in Noblesville who had cancer. Then, she was asked by her friend, Amie, if she’d like to serve on the New Hope Day of Caring Committee. She and her husband and friends helped build a shed for a woman in New Palestine who lost her husband and needed storage space. She also organized a toy drive and DOC for Nathan’s Playroom, a non-profit in Indy that gives toys to seriously ill children and their siblings. She’s managed a DOC for the Brooks Blackmore Family from Carmel, too. Brooks had cancer and unfortunately passed last May at age 6. Cindy has also walked in the Race for the Cure, become a Dance Mom and Brownie Girl Scout Leader and volunteers as a wish granter for Make-AWish Foundation. Cindy and her husband, Aaron, have three daughters: Sophie (8), Evie (5) and Lily (3). In addition, Cindy likes to volunteer in her children’s classrooms, have lunch with them at school, plan their birthday parties, take them on MOPS playdates and, of course, tuck them in at night. “I wouldn’t be able to do any of these things if it weren’t for my husband, who is so understanding,” Cindy says. “He sacrifices a lot and supports and assists me in volunteering. “What I’ve found on my journey this past year is that kindness breeds kindness,” she adds. “What amazes me the most is how people want to help and will bend over backwards. The little boy was perhaps 3 or 4 years old. He came into the cafe holding his mom's hand. They picked the only free table, which was right next to me. When he sat down in the chair, his little legs were stretched out so you could see the bottoms of his shoes, which were nearly worn through. So worn, you could see his socks which didn't match.

His mom was thin and her face registered a pain that was easy to see. She didn't go to the register to order. Instead, she took out a coin purse and emptied it on the table, counting out the nickels and dimes — $2.41 to be exact. "Not today, but maybe tomorrow," she answered. The table on the other side of me hosted a family of three kids around 10 years old. Two boys and a girl. They were fighting with their mom about ordering them more ice cream. She was paying little attention to them, while talking on her phone. This is the time of year to plant flowers! Flowers bring extra beauty and happiness into our world, and the best kind of flowering plant is the kind that keeps coming back year after year — the perennial. Growing perennials is one of the easiest ways to garden. I have more than 40 varieties of perennials in my yard, I just love them because they give me a great ‘cutting’ selection all growing season long in which to make beautiful floral arrangements. In the summer months, entertaining and gardening life go hand in hand.

When one plant is finished blooming and the last bloom fades, I always design my gardens so that another plant begins to bloom. This keeps the garden in perpetual motion, with color consistently ever-present. It is called, succession planting. Another great tip is to design the flower garden with plants low in the front and high in the back. I also like to repeat a perennial three times in the garden plot, spaced apart from each other but in equal distances, this way there is easy rhythm in the design and the eye move freely through the plot. This is more of an English gardening technique.

DIGGING A NEW HOME

Different sizes of containers will yield more or less bloom. The bigger the plastic pot, the older the plant, thus, more blooms. Check the roots for an established root system with lots of little root ends showing. If roots have become root bound, which looks like rope wrapped around the base of the plant, choose another specimen. A root-bound plant has been there awhile, so there is more of a chance to bring home disease, too. Also, believe it or not, I often smell the soil. It should be earthy and fresh smelling, not sour or decaying in smell.

I give perennials a good watering when I get them home. Then, trim off any tired foliage or blooms. I like to plant in the lowest heat portion of the day, usually in the morning. Roll the round edges of the plastic container on the ground to loosen the soil, and then tip the pot to gently lift out the root ball into your hand. Check the root system, claw away some of the dirt so that the roots become loose and free to branch out when planted in the soil.

In addition, when picking the right plants to purchase from your local nursery, check the foliage for any disease. Look for the red spider mites or white aphids, which kind of look like cotton. If there is any indication, find another flowered friend!

Place root ball in the prepared hole. The top of the dirt from the pot should be level with the top of the hole at soil grade. Backfill the dirt into the hole and gently press to firm up the plant. This also helps remove any air pockets. Water in well.

After the last remnants of winter and early spring chill have seemed to vanish for good, it’s tempting to dash out the front door and bask in as much of the sun’s warmth as possible. Understandable, yes, but statistics show that plenty of precautions should be taken to avoid the potentially serious health consequences a few seemingly harmless rays can cause. Whether it comes from the sun or an indoor tanning bed or what have you, tan skin is damaged skin. And with the fact that everyone grows up thinking that you need to be tan to be attractive, it’s tough to go up against that when you’re trying to decrease the incidents of skin cancer.”

Outrun the Sun is now in its fourth year partnering with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and this year at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29 guests can receive free sunscreen and UV wristbands that change color when exposed to light and also view public service announcements on the IMS video boards featuring Outrun the Sun spokesperson and Verizon IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden. “It’s been a far-reaching program, and we’re thrilled to work with IMS on the initiative,” Day says. “It’s such a big event with a lot of people out in the sun all weekend, so it’s great to have some presence and keep people informed and aware of protecting themselves.” Outrun the Sun will hold its 13th annual Race Against Melanoma at Fort Harrison State Park on June 17, consisting of a five-mile competitive run, a five-kilometer run/walk and a one-mile fun walk, beginning at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit Outrun the Sun’s research and education programs. “Along with the race there’s a sunset festival and there will be music, food trucks, games and activities for all ages, and we encourage everyone to come out,” Day adds. Mayor Joe, based upon these events, concluded that he needed to be a part of the conversation. He resigned his position as U.S. Attorney and began his campaign. “Being a federal prosecutor for four years, my office was doing things to help Marion County,” Mayor Hogsett says. “We cannot arrest our way out of gun violence.”


Gun violence plagues every urban area across the country and clearly Indianapolis is not immune. Mayor Hogsett felt the need to be engaged in a deeper conversation of public safety during his race. He was motivated by the educational opportunity for community engagement into gun violence. “We have an unacceptable level of gun

violence and homicides in our city,” Hogsett says. He and the leadership of IMPD are taking a holistic approach to curbing this violence. After one of the most aggressive campaigns this state has experienced and given the dominance of social media, Mayor Joe’s ability to reach more of his constituents is unprecedented. His media team is intentional with making him more

accessible to his constituents. Their social media platforms help a great deal with this. Once he became Mayor, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 approached. “Of course, the Indy 500 has always been an important part of our city’s history,” Hogsett says. “Last year was exceptional and special, to be mayor and celebrate the 100th running.” During 2016, Hogsett hosted the national Mayor’s Conference, with 250 mayors from all over the country in attendance, indicating, “Every single one of them said, ‘When are we going to the track?’” Hogsett is pleased that the public has responded to the historical significance of the Indy 500, feeling that with the new leadership at the IMS, and given the shake up during the 90s of the CART / IRL split, the city has witnessed a recovery. “Last year, the race was televised locally for the first time,” Hogsett says. “The Indy 500 is always a great opportunity for the city to show off its international flair. We have become more cosmopolitan. We are no longer a fly-over state for many reasons, and thanks to the Indy 500 draw, we are able to prove it.” During the 90s, under Eliz Kraft Taylor’s leadership at the 500 Festival, the Mini Marathon was rerouted to loop around the track instead of going up and down Meridian Street. "At that same time, we took the mini out of race weekend and moved it to the first Saturday in May,” Taylor says. “Race weekend always exhausts our police force, and the change in the mini was greatly appreciated by both the Police Chief and the Mayor.” “The Hudnut doctrine was ‘you can’t be a suburb of nothing’, which encouraged people to invest in

downtown so the suburbs, which at that time, were the outlier townships of Marion County,” Mayor Hogsett says. Continuing along the same path, The Hogsett Corollary is “you can’t be a downtown of nothing” to which Mayor Joe explains, “Hudnut was speaking to the townships. My meaning is that we have to continue to nurture our downtown and invest in the neighborhoods and surrounding contiguous areas.” Mayor Joe closes with a story: During the early 90s, while he was Secretary of State, he realized he had not registered for the Mini, and at that time it was run on a

Friday morning. Hogsett decided to run the race as a bandit. “Of course, I fully understood the rules,” says Hogsett with a smile. He jumped into the crowd of runners a little after the start, running among those who formally registered.

As Mayor Joe ran alongside Allison’s, a group of men on break outside in the yard began chanting, “USA, USA.” He ran through a residential area approaching downtown and an elderly woman, seated in her front yard, stood up and walked toward the sidewalk and yelled as he went by, “You’re THIRD!”

This was the first year that the route looped around the track and boomeranged back to downtown. As he approached the track entrance, he was stopped by volunteers wearing yellow and flagging him down, so Joe circumvented his route to 16th street. He was running alone, but this fact did not initially register with him.

They say “third time’s a charm,” and that’s certainly the case for Jeff Hull, who has cheated death twice and now has been named May’s Luckiest Hoosier Alive by Hoosier Park Casino. It was 2014 when Hull started experiencing flu-like symptoms that wouldn’t subside. After enduring multiple digestive problems that landed him in the hospital twice, he traveled to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for further evaluation. “They tore me apart,” says Hull, noting that he had pancreas problems, an enlarged spleen and a liver that was being destroyed by cirrhosis because one of the main bile ducts was completely closed and doctors could not get it open. Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, the reason he felt so lousy was because his liver was getting bombarded by waste that his body couldn’t expel. Shortly after the diagnosis, Hull’s gastrointestinal specialist performed extra analysis when taking samples for a biopsy and found abnormal cells, indicating the early stage of cancer. “Very few people survive once cancer is in the bile ducts,” Hull says. “The prognosis wasn’t looking good.” They needed to act quickly. Metro Elevator, a 47-year old company, originally owned a fleet of orange construction elevators, until one day, when their Executive Vice President, Roger Brummett, walked by the painting crew as they were complaining about the selection and quality of the color. “Paint them whatever color you want,” he said. As he walked away, he stopped and turned abruptly and said, “What if we painted them pink?” The question opened up possibilities and led to a new philanthropic marketing campaign with the end result of painting their entire fleet of elevators pink. Rachelle Brummett, Marketing & Public Relations Manager for Metro Elevator, partners with the general contractors on their job sites to create their socially conscious event promoting breast cancer awareness. “This program makes sense to the companies for their culture and our fundraising campaigns across the country benefitting local Susan G. Komen,” says Rachelle, who has worked on all of the Komen, Metro Elevator campaigns. Both Roger and Rachelle have grandmothers who died from breast cancer. Rachelle serves on the Pink Tie Ball committee, which will be held on Sept. 16. Roger has been a Pink Tie Guy in two states: Michigan and Indiana. Once they connected with the local Susan G. Komen chapter in Central Indiana, they were generously connected with Komen nationwide for connecting locally by job site. The fundraising campaigns begin at peak of construction, with the bulk of the contractors on the site. The contractors have been engaged with a kickoff reception, which includes a ribbon cutting replete with pink hard hats and pink vests. The GCs are invited, as well as local affiliate of Komen. Survivors are invited to speak, and the campaign is open for the following 45 to 60 days, with 100 percent of the donations staying local to that area. “The money raised stays in the market where we are doing business, and this spring is the first campaign with Susan G. Komen of Central Indiana,” Roger says. There are about 30 construction elevator companies across the country that do what Metro Elevator does, which is not many for an industry of their size. Their now signature pink elevators have fundraising campaigns across the country benefiting local Susan G. Komen. At the end of the campaign period, a check is presented by the GC to the local Komen affiliate. Past or existing campaigns have included all states from Michigan to Florida and Alaska. To date, Metro Elevator’s breast cancer campaigns have raised $117,000 nationally for Komen through 12 campaigns. “When I received a call from Roger sharing that he wanted to paint some elevators pink, I was like ‘wow, cool’,” says Susan G. Komen of Central Indiana Director Natalie Sutton. “I had no idea what a construction elevator was.” Proceeds go towards Komen’s Bold Goal, which is to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths in half by 2026. Currently, 40,000 women die per year from breast cancer. “While women still need access to screenings and mammograms, our shift is on saving lives,” Natalie says. “Our focus is on patient navigation. Once someone receives their diagnosis, a navigator is someone who helps them through their recommended care.” Metro Elevator’s involvement with spreading awareness to mostly men on construction sites has made an impact with Komen. Now, a new demographic are being educated about breast cancer by being lifted in a pink elevator. “This is what is great about Metro’s pink elevators — we continually raise awareness, not just during the campaign,” Roger says. “There is a sign inside the elevator which reads, ‘Why is This Elevator Pink?’ which explains the significance.” Follow them on Facebook or visit metroelevator.com.

North side Indianapolis-based Primeline Outdoor Living underwent an ownership transition in January, and General Manager Russ Greene says several new, innovative offerings are helping to distinguish the 15-year old business as a landscaping, lawn service and outdoor living team. Prior to 2017, Primeline operated exclusively as a softscape, lawn mowing and landscaping business, and before the official ownership transition, Greene sat down with Owner Brett Bontrager and Chief Operating Officer Scott Cooley to discuss a few additional, unique services they felt would separate themselves from the competition.

“Before joining Primeline, I ran the outdoor living department for a local competitor here in the Indianapolis area and actually did a project for Brett a couple years ago,” Greene says. “After he asked me to come on board, we thought it would be fun to add some services where we design and install outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, pergolas and other outdoor living products.” Greene works with approximately 10 manufacturers to bring innovative outdoor products to Primeline’s customers including Werever Outdoor Cabinets, a line of cabinetry built for direct exposure to extreme temperatures. “They’re based out of Florida, and we’re the exclusive dealer for Werever in Indianapolis,” Greene says. “It is truly outdoor kitchen cabinetry that looks like indoor kitchen cabinetry with a

Fishers resident, Wes Shealey, wants you to help kick ALS in the cornhole. Shealey, who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2015, is promoting a fundraiser to raise awareness of ALS and funds for ALS research.

Last year’s inaugural tournament raised more than $28,000. “It will be a great time for everyone,” Shealey says. “It was a lot of fun last year. We had almost 300 people.” Shealey, a friendly announcer at all of the Fishers High School boys baseball games, says he likes to do “as much as I can for as long as I can.”

Shealey noted it took over a year to be diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, but he said he his wife, Jennifer, hasn't let it stop them from keeping things as normal as they can. “We stay very busy with family and friends,” he says. “I also do the announcing at the Fishers Boys Football and Basketball games, and I have coached a fall high school baseball league, too.” Shealey’s son, Ben, a 2015 Fishers High School graduate, played baseball at the school. Their daughter, Brittany, graduated from Fishers High School in 2009. “My family and friends have been overwhelmingly supportive during this,” Shealey says. “They have all been wonderful.” Shealey, who originally hails from Shreveport, Louisiana, is quite popular at the Fishers High School Baseball games, hosting a large number of friends in his Tigers popup tent before the games begin. Many people come up to talk baseball, find how he’s feeling or to simply give him or Jennifer a handshake or a hug. Shealey, a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church, said the church started his foundation to help raise funds for his expenses. “We are doing all we can to raise awareness and funds for ALS research and fund a cure,” Shealey says. “This is not just for me. This is also for other people long after me who suffer from this disease. The tournament is a great way to do that.” The tournament will include two-player teams with each team paying $100, which includes four drink tickets and two tickets for the drawing for either a HSE or Fishers cornhole set. It’s a double-elimination tournament and is limited to 64 teams. Cash prizes will be awarded for first and second place. A non-participant cost is $25 per person, which includes two drink tickets. Sponsorships are welcome. Marc Feeney, 40, is a Fishers resident with a passion for music. It all started when he was young, Feeney recalls dusting off a forgotten cornet hidden in his grandmother’s farmhouse attic. Intrigue set in and he tried to play the old horn. With a little determination and a lot of practice, he joined the fifth grade band at his elementary school. “I loved making music because it was a fun challenge that set off new fireworks in my head,” Feeney says. Music poured from his trumpet throughout high school. In fact, it was his life. When it came time to decide where he would go to college and what he would study, the choice was clear — music education at Ball State. He dreamed about becoming a music teacher and introducing bright young talent to the joy of music that he found so many years earlier. As his youthful optimism waned, economic reality set in. Marketing seemed like a safer

career choice. He made the decision to switch majors and his entire career path. He felt like he lost a huge part of himself but knew it was the practical thing to do. Feeney entered the workforce and placed his trumpet in a closet. Feeney spent the next few years exploring new work opportunities but never felt quite as fulfilled as when he was performing with his trumpet. One day, his daughter Kennis asked Feeney about making music. He pulled his dusty trumpet out of the closet and let Kennis experiment with it — just like he did with his Grandma’s old cornet. Kennis’s interest began to grow. After all, she was a natural.

In eight weeks, he got his playing chops back, reigniting his passion and rediscovering his talent. Feeney has performed with Fishers Music Works ever since. His daughter, Kennis, now plays trumpet in her junior high band, and Fishers Music Works has grown to nine unique performing ensembles. “A musical theatre group, a choir, a wind symphony, a jazz combo and even an opera troupe are active Fishers Music Works ensembles,” said organization president and Fishers resident, Rob Lawyer.

He connected with pastor and music professor, Dr. Keith Kunda, HSE Schools band teacher, Todd McCreary and cofounder of Fishers’ Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy, Doug Whisman. They created Fishers Music Works in 2013. Feeney is now the organization’s vicepresident and one of its strongest recruiters. “If you love to perform - no matter how long it’s been - you should join us,” Feeney says. “Don’t keep your joy of music locked away.” Today, about 250 individuals participate in Fishers Music Works ensembles as performers, backstage assistants or creative contributors. The organization continues to create new performing arts opportunities for Fishers residents to participate in and attend. The nine different Fishers Music Works ensembles reflect a spectrum of participant musical expertise. For example, the wind symphony includes local professional musicians. Meanwhile, the choir includes newbies and seasoned vocalists singing side-by-side. Fishers Music Works encourages performers of any skill level to connect and explore musical opportunities. Participants share a love of music and a special camaraderie. “I want people to stop saying that I used to play an instrument, I used to sing or I used to act,” says Feeney as he prepared for a recent performance with 40 other Fishers performers. “The joy of music and thrill of performance will always be a part of you. And, whether you are a part of the audience or take your place on stage, Fishers Music Works invites you to share in that joy again.” Fishers Music Works is planning a robust 2017 performance season.
