Young Life Area Director Ryan Ahlwardt returns to his roots, sharing and inspiring others.

Class of ’99 HSE grad Ryan Ahlwardt attended IU where he earned a marketing degree from the Kelley School of Business. Notably, he was a part of the a cappella group Straight No Chaser during his years in Bloomington and also after he graduated when he received a call that would quickly change his life for five years. The ‘band’ was getting back together after the Chairman of Atlantic Records viewed a viral YouTube video of the classic Straight No Chaser performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” As Ahlwardt tells the story, it took him all of seven seconds to say “Yes!" over the phone requesting his service. Mid-way into his fifth year of singing on Atlantic Records with Straight No Chaser, Ahlwardt overheard a conversation while getting his hair cut at Wild Horses Salon in Fishers. The discussion was about the global, non-denominational Christian outreach ministry for adolescents called Young Life. After being defunct for five years, the ministry was blooming once more, and a full-time staff position was opening up in Fishers. He instinctively knew this would be his next act.
The value Young Life offers to our community is impossible to quantify. The students who belong come from a vast array of backgrounds with an even more diverse range of interests. Athletes, artists, extroverts, introverts and everyone in between make up the members of Young Life. Any student (grades 7-12) is welcome to become a member of the Young Life community in Fishers. “I don’t think it could be any more of a judgment-free zone here at Young Life,” says HSE sophomore Lukas DeVoe, a member of the school’s lacrosse team. “I feel truly loved when I’m here.” “It’s our diversity of students that makes Young Life amazing,” says Ahlwardt. “Everyone is welcome, from the young woman with Down Syndrome who sees life as a reason to throw a spontaneous dance party where everyone is invited and no one cares if you know the moves, to the young man who is taking six AP courses, playing two sports, holding down a part-time job, stressing to stay above a 4.0 GPA, applying for five different colleges, doing his best to maintain a semblance of a social life and dying inside to realize who he truly is and what really matters in life.”

teachers, accountants, baristas, business owners, you name it – who love to serve the young people of our community and point them to something bigger than themselves. They’re my heroes.” Jackie Renick, a sixth grade teacher at Fall Creek Intermediate School, has enjoyed serving as a Young Life leader in Fishers for a year and a half. “I love being a Young Life leader because it allows me to connect with kids, to be a resource for them and to help them grow in their relationship with Christ," Renick says. "The kids teach me something new every time I’m with them, and I feel so blessed and honored that the Lord placed Young Life in my life.” Kathy Craig, a former teacher in the HSE school district, spearheads the efforts of WyldLife in Fishers as the ministry’s director of junior high operations. “I think junior high school is one of the most insecure points of an adolescent’s life,” Craig says. “Kids are searching for identity, worth and belonging. We in Young Life and WyldLife offer them a community where everyone belongs because everyone is loved. We laugh and play games with kids, we make them the heroes and we get real as we go through life together with them.” That sense of community has been evident in the ministry’s rapid growth over the past three years. “Since 2012, Young Life has experienced considerable growth,” Ahlwardt says. “Six schools in our community are represented at our weekly events, our volunteers have quadrupled in number, eight local church congregations are represented on our leadership team, nearly 600 kids and leaders have gone to Young Life camp over the summer and over $500,000 has been generously donated by businesses and families who want to keep Young Life thriving in our community for years to come.”

HAMILTON COUNTY KIDS COATS COMES TO FISHERS Writer / Laurie Quinn
Hamilton County Kids Coats is a not-forprofit organization that started with three women from Carmel United Methodist Church in 2004. Funded by the church and the Good Samaritan Network, they gave away over 400 coats that year. Throughout the years, the need of coats has grown, and new locations have been added. This year, there are five locations for Hamilton County including a Fishers location* for the first time. Linda Withrow, Executive Director

“I am excited that Fishers has truly embraced this mission and welcomed Hamilton County Kids Coats into the community,” says Linda Withrow, Executive Director for the organization. Laurie Quinn, Commons Manager for Crosspoint Church and the Fishers Director for Hamilton County Kids Coats, has two team members, Mary Hinkebein and Paolina Anthony from St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church. Together, these ladies and other local businesses and organizations are teaming up to provide warm winter wear for families in Hamilton County at the Fishers location. There are donation sites all over Fishers to drop off clean, gently used or new coats to help fuel the mission of Hamilton County Kids Coats such as at Crosspoint Church and St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church. There are also some at New Hope Presbyterian Church, Delaware Township building and at the Fall Creek Township building. The mission of the organization is to “serve those in our county in need of warm winter wear and connect them with resources and churches, so they may grow in the warmth of Christ’s love,” states Withrow. this is where the families that Hamilton County Kids Coats serves often shop, so it is important to leave that winter inventory intact. On Saturday, November 14, the Royals Varsity Club (RVC) will be hosting their annual fundraiser, the Black and Blue Bash. Featuring a live auction, dinner, dancing and Royal pride, the Black and Blue Bash will raise funds for the Hamilton Southeastern High School Athletic Department. The fundraiser will take place at the Wellington Fishers Banquet and Conference Center from 6:30-11 p.m. There will be updates from the RVC as well as the athletic department, so this is an event that you won’t want to miss.
Some of the items that will be featured at the live auction include a weekend trip to St. Louis, Disney World hotel and admission tickets, a photo session with Studio 116, numerous gift cards to local businesses and many more. This is the primary fundraiser for the RVC with all proceeds going toward the athletic program. Some of the recent purchases and contributions from the RVC include portable AEDs, updated cardio and training rooms, scholarships for HSE Senior athletes and providing funds for each of the 22 athletic teams at HSE. This year, the RVC hopes to raise at least $25,000 for the school.

The Michael Treinen Foundation 8th Annual Turkey Trot will take place Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26 at 9 a.m. This special holiday tradition held at Noblesville Downtown Square will include a 5K Run/Walk and 3K Family Walk. Why not have fun burning calories in the morning before you feast later that day? The top 10 men and women of the 5K will each win a pie to take home to share with their Thanksgiving table! Registering for the Turkey Trot is a great way to start the spirit of the holiday season. It’s rewarding to know that you supported the community as 100 percent of the proceeds will go towards various philanthropies such as Riley Hospital for Children and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Go to TheMichaelTreinenFoundation.org to sign up. “The Turkey Trot is a timed event to meet the needs of the competitive runner and yet is also casual if you prefer to stroll through the park,” says Kelly Treinen, mother of Michael who lost his battle with cancer in 2008 at 19 years old, just six days prior to his 20th birthday. “Michael was very energetic, athletic and a people-person," she says. “He was a giver who cared about others.” She reflects back to when he once drew a picture for a little girl named Taylor at Riley where he also was a patient at the time. He traced a turkey with his hand using his thumb as the head and his fingers as the feathers. He wrote “Happy Thanksgiving” and signed his name before presenting it to her. She never forgot this simple act of kindness, and neither did her parents. After Michael passed, Taylor’s parents gave the picture to Kelly reminding her of his compassion that lives on in everyone’s hearts who were lucky enough to know him. This

same picture is displayed every year on the race day T-shirts. “Since he was so into fitness and played three sports in high school, Michael found mental and physical strength by continuing to work out whenever he could during his chemotherapy treatments,” says Kelly. “Michael wanted to make a difference, so he started the Moving Through Treatment campaign where his focus was to purchase exercise equipment for the teenage patients at Riley that could be used in the Physical Therapy room or in the patient’s rooms. Several exercise bikes were purchased and can be seen throughout the fifth floor at Riley.” The impact Michael has made on his community should come as no surprise since his mother is exceptionally driven to help others when she can. Kelly works as a Principal of Promise Road Elementary in Noblesville. During my interview with her one day after school, I learned she was scheduled to give blood immediately following our conversation. Moreover, Kelly was recently awarded the 2015 Indianapolis LLS Woman of the Year, raising a little over $87,000 in just 10 weeks. “I had such a strong team,” she says humbly. “This was such a rewarding experience made up of family and friends. My neighbor and friend Chris Yeakey promoted this and convinced me to run. He and the other people on my team are the true reason I won.” In 2008, Yeakey also persuaded Kelly to start the first Turkey Trot. “The Turkey Trot wasn’t my idea," she says. "It was actually Chris who thought of it. He saw how my daughter, Meredith, was involved with her Team in Training program [LLS Fundraiser] in memory of her brother.” Yeakey suggested that they host a 5K event on Thanksgiving Day in their neighborhood. This event was successful with about 50 people attending and $800 raised for LLS. The next year, the race grew to about 300 runners. By the third year, the race was moved to Noblesville Square with close to 1,500 people.

“We do not just raise money for LLS,” says Kelly. “The Turkey Trot also benefits the Sparrow Club of Indiana, the Michael Treinen Foundation and the Doll Program to Riley Hospital for Children. It provides direct support to families and has supported the Angel of Hope [a memorial for children that have passed away].” The Doll Program involves giving American Girl Dolls and outfits to Riley patients. Kelly hopes to add a “boy component” this year by giving Legos to patients.

“All of the board members represent key people in Michael’s life and help make the race a festive event,” says Kelly. “Each year, we have a balloon display that portrays the theme of the race T-shirts. One year, it was a red truck because Michael used to drive one. The balloon sculpture is placed at the cemetery which is along the route on Monument and 17th Street.” Kelly is gracious for how the Noblesville community has stepped up to help her family in so many ways. The Turkey Trot is about new tradition for our community in memory of a young man who lost his battle with cancer but brought a community together for a common cause. The first ever Bridal Venue Crawl is coming to Central Indiana with a stop planned right here in the Geist/Fishers area! The “Crawl” is a team effort between IndyBride2B and the TownePost Network. It’s a fun, creative way for brides-to-be to tour area venues. The initiation of wedding planning is to book that PERFECT venue, and this Crawl will help Indy brides do just that. Heartland Distillers was founded by Stuart Hobson, Master Distiller and Owner of the only vodka producer in Fishers and one of only three produced in our state. Officially opening up production in 2008, Heartland Distillers can be found just about everywhere that sells spirits in the state of Indiana. “I was interested in producing my own spirits for sale and discovered a small distillery in northern Michigan was exactly what I wanted to do,” shares Hobson, who did a lot of research into producing alcohol for distribution. Hobson had owned a chain of liquor stores in Fishers and decided to produce his own. “By law, you cannot own a liquor store and be a producer, so I sold my stores and started distilling my own vodka,” says Hobson. Heartland distributes through Glazers Distributors throughout Indiana with expansion to other Midwest markets in the works. “We are a moderately priced vodka,” says Hobson, whose vodka retails for $20, compared to $30 or $10 per bottle of other brands. Vodka is not the only product for Heartland Distillers. Starting in January, they will have their own branded gin, Heartland Distillers American Gin, with more spirits planned. “We’ve made bourbon too, but we are sold out at the moment,” shares Hobson. In 2010, Heartland Distillers Vodka won a gold medal at the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco, the largest competition in the country. Heartland was only one of a handful to win a gold medal for vodka. Also in 2010, their vodka was awarded Best Buy by the Beverage Testing Institute. Designated as an Indiana Artisan by the Indiana Department of Commerce, Heartland Distillers plans to keep operations in Fishers as they expand their offerings. “We are named Heartland Distillers because that is where we are,” says Hobson. Mama Bear’s Bakery & Café is quickly becoming more than just a popular coffee shop in Geist. It’s a place for community events and meetings, and now the cozy coffee shop at 10110 Brooks School Rd. is becoming a place to showcase local talent with an open mic night for teens! “It was more about offering something for the kids than just business,” says Owner Christy Watkins who passed out flyers and posted the open mic night on Facebook for high school singers and musicians. “Not all kids go to football games and school events,” says Christy. “This gives them a place to go that’s safe, and they can play their music.” By 7 p.m. on this Friday night September 25, the place was packed, and a band called “Dirty Jerry” was taking the stage. “I feel like I’m in an episode of ‘Friends!’” laughs Christy. Singer/ songwriter Megan Ledford was waiting outside with family and friends strumming her guitar and waiting her turn. “This is so nice,” says Megan with a smile. “There’s really no place like this where we can go and perform and talk with the audience about your music!” The HSE senior – who says she always look for opportunities to perform – has auditioned for the television music competition shows “The X Factor” ands “The “Voice” and plans to audition again in the spring. When it was Megan’s turn on stage, she played a song she wrote called “Summertime Rain” which the crowd seemed to enjoy. “Some sing one or two songs, or they can sing a 30 minute set if they want to,” says Christy who was inspired to do open mic nights from her days at HSE where she and her friends were always looking for fun things to do. Christy says she plans to have more open mic nights in the future “as long as they want to come sing,” and she adds that adults have been asking if she would consider getting a liquor license and holding adult music nights. “I have thought about that too,“ laughs Christy. ”But this place is kind of adult day every day, so I really wanted to do something for the kids first!” Interested musicians should check Mama Bear’s at Geist on Facebook for future open mic nights. The Dolphin Tank event held at the Indiana Conference for Women addresses the disparity of funding that women-owned businesses receive compared to maleowned. But thanks to events such as the Dolphin Tank, the tide is turning. Organizers Polina Feldman, a Spin Up Associate at IU Research and Technology Corporation, and Kristen Cooper, VP of Corp. Development and Operations for Sticksnleaves, have coordinated this year’s panel of judges and vetted the applicants.
“Participating in the Dolphin Tank will be a chance to encourage, connect and network with female business owners who may be interested in what we do, and I may learn about a business idea or two that will help us as we head into year two of The Launch Ladies networking group, lead by teaching code.” Cooper, held two Startup Study Hall events specifically to coach for a compelling pitch. This Christmas, shoppers will find more than just bargains and festive lights as they wind their way through Castleton Square and Greenwood Park malls. A very special Christmas tree will also appear at each location, one that eschews shiny ornaments and tinsel for hundreds of simple paper angels with names like “Maddy,” “Anthony” and “Kayla.” The Salvation Army is partnering with CBS4 to launch a new program in Central Indiana called Angel Tree. It’s their hope that shoppers will “adopt” over 3,000 children, or “Angels,” this Christmas. Each paper angel represents one real child, a boy or girl whose name, age, wishes and needs are printed right on the angel. Sponsoring an Angel is easy. Shoppers simply choose a name from the tree and pledge to help The Salvation Army bring the joy of Christmas to this special child in need. Then they hit the stores, armed with their Angel’s description and an empty bag waiting to be filled with wants, like a special toy or game, and needs, like a warm coat or a pair of shoes.
Once the bag is filled, shoppers return it to the Angel Tree volunteers, and The Salvation Army stores it until parents collect the gifts just before Christmas. The Angel Tree program started 35 years ago at a Salvation Army in Lynchburg, Virginia. It proved to be such an effective way to directly connect donors with children in need that it grew over time into a nationwide program currently helping more than one million children across the United States. Thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate donors, Angel Tree helps to make the holidays more joyful for families facing significant financial struggles and hardships. Major Bob Webster, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Indiana, has experienced first-hand the impact Angel Tree has on a community. “There’s not a single Salvation Army program that touches the lives of families like our Angel Tree program does,” he explains. “It not only meets the needs of area children, but it grants their wishes and brings the spirit of Christmas to

With thousands of Angels available for adoption, The Salvation Army is also counting on significant support from local businesses and groups looking for a way to give back this holiday season. While serving in the Pacific, Rearick and his fellow crew members earned the Distinguished Flying Medal for Mission 13 over Kawasaki, Japan, on April 13, 1945. “It was a rough night mission,” recalls Rearick. “We went in low, around 6,000-7,000 feet. It’s a miracle we weren’t shot down since every gun in that town turns on you when the search lights find you.” Rearick recalls that with the artillery being aimed at them, it sounded like bricks were being thrown at the plane. Their tail gunner was injured during that mission, and a night fighter almost collided with them. When they returned to base, the chief mechanic looked at their plane and said, “You know, these things cost $600,000 a piece, and you ought to take better care of it.” Rearick and his crew agreed with him. “That night, I thought I had five seconds to live,” says Rearick.

HOME-A-RAMA TRENDS
This year’s Home-A-Rama, held September 17 to October 4, featured five fully decorated and landscaped homes in the Sagamore subdivision of Noblesville. The homes this year were a little smaller than in the years past, including two ranch style homes with empty nesters in mind. If you didn’t get a chance to visit the show, here are a few trends to take away from this year’s event.

Most of the lower levels of the homes were set up for entertaining with a bar, pool table, shuffle boards and big screen TVs, but there was a noticeable shift to more open casual viewing areas in place of the more formal theater rooms. As one visitor said after touring the homes, “10 years ago, it was all about the theatre room. Now you have to be able to live outdoors!” There was also a second home show held downtown this year, Oct. 15-18 and 22-25.

Local restauranteurs Henri and Shelley Najem bring their flare to Flamme, a new “fresh casual” gourmet burger concept located at The Depot in downtown Fishers. Celebrating 25 years of restaurant ownership, Henri and Shelley Najem opened their latest endeavor to bring their exceptionally high quality tastes and ingredients to casual dining. The Najems are redefining the burger joint.

Henri’s mom, Joanne, who is of Italian heritage, wanted an Italian restaurant to continue the tradition of her late brother, Joe. Joanne partnered with Henri and Shelley with Pisano’s, which was located off 71st Street and Binford. Wishing to open a location closer to their Geist home, they sold Pisano’s and opened Bella Vita.
The Najems are known for their decor and attention to detail, and Flamme is Flamme is an open concept restaurant no exception. “The concept of ‘fire’ is a serving up uniquely blended burgers and fun one to play with for interior design,” other fresh accoutrements with casual shares Shelley. “The interior is simple and seating. “If I am going to do something, I want it to be the best,” says Henri. “The wood burning grill was key. I didn’t want a flattop cooking surface, but I didn’t want dried out burgers either. The open flame was the only way to accomplish the consistency, and with the angled channeling removing the grease, we don’t have the grease dripping into the wood.” The grill is wood-burning only. The cooking grid has v-channels, and the surface angle is at a slight decline, so that grease drains off and not into the flames below. The woodfired grill takes about 20 minutes to heat up to a very high heat. Flamme burns only oak along with apple chips to add flavor. The body of the grill is like a fireplace made with a steel structure.

For the month of November, Flamme is offering 10 percent off for winter clothing item donations to Third Phase. The design of The Depot is to encourage foot traffic. Free parking is available in the parking garage and also along Municipal Drive. Fishers is the first of many locations for Flamme. Plans are now underway to open a second location at Grand Park in the Greenwalt development near the Cambria Suites hotel. Additional locations are in negotiations. The Najems do not disappoint. Sparks events aren’t your average boring networking event. When you come to Sparks, you get a show! This lively event is truly a first-class production and is centered around three short, TED style talks that are meant to provide inspiration and challenge attendees to see things a new way. This gets conversations rolling as people continue to build connections after the talks wrap up for the night. Sparks’ tagline encourages members to “Mingle. Be Inspired. Share.” The mingling is easily accomplished with the help of delicious food and cocktails that kick off each Sparks event. Listening to the fascinating and thought-provoking talks makes being inspired a given. And discussing your take on the talks and adding to the conversation has the sharing part covered. The format works and members are able to connect in deep, meaningful and productive ways as a result. Chris Reed, who founded Sparks in 2012, explains the Sparks concept this way: “Sparks is a monthly event platform that delivers a common shared experience creating an environment for real connections between real people.”
Who attends Sparks events? The audience, which averages well over 100 people at any given event, is comprised of local entrepreneurs and business owners, community leaders, business development professionals and anyone who is genuinely interested in continuing to learn and connect.
Sparks events are held the second Tuesday of each month at Morty’s Comedy Joint at 3625 E. 96th St. in Indianapolis. Sparks members enjoy early entry to the venue at 4:45 p.m. for the “Member Mingle,” and doors open to non-members at 5:15 p.m. for mingling prior to the 6 p.m. show time.
When asked why someone should attend a Sparks event, Reed is often heard sharing his personal philosophy: “What got me to where I am today isn’t necessarily what is going to get me to where I want to be tomorrow. Keep learning!”
The show includes two four-minute talks followed by the 10-minute headliner talk. The show comes in right at 35 minutes from start to finish. Guests are welcome and encouraged to stick around and share their thoughts on the talks and enjoy cocktails until the event wraps up at 8 p.m.
Sparks events also offer a professional production with state-of-the-art technology to showcase top-tier professionals as speakers on the Sparks stage. Former Sparks speaker and Executive Director of BNI Central Indiana Travis Sims encourages professionals to share their insights with the Sparks audience. “Sparks is a platform that, as a speaker, you can reach a wide audience all at once with multiple Chamber of Commerce, Rainmakers and BNI all feeding into one event," said Sims. "The timed format, big LCD screens, lights, cameras and energy from over 100 people in an audience make this an exciting stage to be on.”
