MAKING STRIDES IN SOCCER HSE SENIOR ELI QUIVEY TO CONTINUE HIS SOCCER CAREER AT IUPUI Writer / Demi Lawrence
Hamilton Southeastern High School’s Boys Soccer program has been turning heads the past two years, winning their first sectional championship in nearly 20 years in 2015, only to repeat and win again in 2016. Many factors lead to these two astounding seasons for the guys, but at the heart of this team is captain and senior Eli Quivey. “[As team captain], I try to keep it positive on the field because a lot can go wrong in an 80-minute soccer game,” Eli said. “Before the game, I bring all the guys together, and I always have a new saying or new speech I give to them. At halftime, if players are down because we aren’t playing well, I go to them and tell them that it’s okay. A big thing for us is to just keep a smile on our faces, because it’s important to have fun while you play.” A senior at HSE, Eli possesses an abundant toolbelt when it comes to soccer. His freshman year, he played for the U.S. Soccer Developmental Academy, which allowed him to be exposed to college coaches and college programs early. After living what sounds like a dream, Eli decided to play for HSE’s team his sophomore year instead of going back to the Academy. “When I was in eighth grade, I was playing really well, and it was a new thing for the U14’s to play for the Developmental Academy. My parents and I decided to play there because it was a better chance for me to get recruited early for college,” Eli said. “Then my sophomore year, I had the chance to go back and play [for the Academy], and though it was an honor to be invited back, I decided by myself that I wanted to prove that you don’t have to play for that team to go play in college.” His first year as a Royal, Eli was already making significant impacts. He led the team in goals and assists and made first team All-Conference, first team All-District and Honorable Mention All-State. After being heavily recruited by many colleges, Eli verbally committed to play Division I soccer and study Sports Marketing and Management at IUPUI his junior year, making him the second ever male soccer player from HSE to go play D-I. This in itself was a huge accomplishment already, but the fact that Eli’s dad, Raymond, played on the first ever boys soccer team at IUPUI made the opportunity even more sweet. “I chose IUPUI not just because my dad went there, but because I love the campus. I love the classroom sizes, and the sports marketing and management majors there are great,” Eli said.
“It’s pretty surreal [to be playing at IUPUI]. I remember my first time going to an alumni game was when I was 9 and seeing my dad down there with all of his friends. When I was getting recruited, he said, “I don’t want you to go there because I went there. I want you to go there because you like the campus, you like that it’s close to home and they have your major.” As his senior year comes to a close, Eli hopes to leave a lasting impact on his younger teammates and future Royals players in years to come. “I just want to leave [an impact] to show kids that you don’t have to play at the Developmental Academy to be good, and hopefully kids will try and follow in my footsteps to go and play college soccer,” Eli said. “And it doesn’t even have to be Division I. It can be Division II, Division III, NAIA, whatever you want to do. Just go out and play college soccer.” Demi Lawrence is a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, as well as an editor of the school’s yearbook and newsmagazine. Demi enjoys reading, spending too much money on concerts and taking photos of her friends.

INDY PLUS REALTY GROUP

Realtors? Yes. Different? ABSOLUTELY! $250,000 returned to clients over the last 2 years. Yes, $250,000 over 2 years by a handful of agents is what the Indy Plus Realty Group has given back through their Community Contributors program. Dr. Tom Galovic (Dr. Tom has a PhD!) started the Indy Plus Realty Group in 2014 with the intention of giving back to the community in a profound way. He created his own program, Community Contributors, to honor important individuals who truly make a difference in our communities. "We know of no one else who is doing what we do to give back," says Troy Dixon, aka
NZ Troy, who is from New Zealand, and lives with his wife and two daughters in the Geist area. NZ Troy partnered with Dr. Tom in 2015 with Indy Plus Realty Group. “I was drawn to the Indy Plus Realty Group due to their sense of fun and culture, for we are truly people-centered. The Community Contributors program is a great example of that,” shares Geist Luxury Agent Drew Keller, who lives in the area with his family and was a natural fit with the group.
“As a school administrator, I developed close relationships with our first responders,” shares Dr. Tom, who is a former high school principal. “I feel our educators and first responders should have more recognition, as do our military personnel.” “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we do value our commitment to our clients. Growing up in a very small town in New Zealand, our sense of community meant everything. Everyone who volunteered with our Fire Brigade, teachers, and first responders were all valued,” shares Troy Dixon, who ran a recent campaign for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, striking a “Zoolander” pose at the Fortville Fashion Show! (Geist April issue)
The mission of the Community Contributors program is to provide financial savings to the people who provide extraordinary services to our nation and our communities every day. The Indy Plus Realty Group does this by providing a credit Dr. Tom, NZ Troy and Drew (sorry, no of their earned commission at closing for nickname yet) are seen out and about at qualified clients.

All three men started in other industries and were drawn to real estate. It’s clear that they love what they do. “This is where my passion lies,” shares Drew, who handled contracts for his business ventures and for his brother, who played in the NFL. There is a playful competitiveness among the team and all have a mutual respect for one another, firmly believing a rising tide raises all ships.

“We have fun doing this,” states Dr. Tom. "We value family and with our business, it’s the relationship piece that makes all the difference.” Dr. Tom, NZ Troy and Drew (still no nickname!) have gravitated to one another based on shared values. Giving back is important to all who are on their team. Working on a stronger community is something that every agent bought into it and are passionate about it. All have their own reasons, but common thread is their belief in giving back to those who serve.

Building A Better Life and Body HOW FAITH AND THE RIGHT SUPPORT TEAM TRANSFORMED DAN HAGAN FROM AN ALCOHOLIC TO A CHAMPION Writer / Lisa Mitchell Photography provided
the insecurity and distract him from the negative feelings he was struggling with.
“Your most significant calling is on the other side of your darkest valley.”
Although always active and focused on his time in the gym, Dan says it was more about keeping up appearances, and he used that time in the gym as a way, at least in his mind, to balance the binge drinking and abuse he was putting his body through with alcohol.
That’s a quote from Pastor Tim Dunn of Heartland Church during a recent Sunday message that really resonated with Dan Hagan, HSE grad and recently named Overall Men’s Physique Champion for the NPC Natural Indianapolis. Dunn, a mentor and friend of Dan’s, seemed to be speaking directly to him on that Sunday. Despite his recent success in his fitness pursuits, the journey to wellness and sobriety is one that has not been easy for the Hamilton County native. And it’s a struggle that few people knew about until now. Dan grew up in Fishers and graduated from HSE High School in 2002. His life looked perfect on the outside and even to those close to him, but inside, Hagan struggled with self-doubt, eventually leading to him to turn to alcohol to help him numb
“I didn’t party like everyone else,” says Hagan, “I was always on the next level with being excessive. I couldn’t keep myself under control. I thought that was just normal for me.” Dan began drinking in high school, and it became part of his normal routine. At IU, drinking in excess was just part of the program for him, and it became a lifestyle that he thought he had control over. But he didn’t. Alcohol was changing him and putting him in dangerous situations. This pattern of self-destruction continued into his postcollege years. It took a toll on his friends and family, which eventually led to them staging an intervention in March 2013. atFishers.com / NOVEMBER 2016 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11
Hagan agreed to a brief stay at Fairbanks, an addiction recovery center, and vowed to stay sober. He didn’t have ongoing support and wasn’t convinced, even at that point, that he was powerless over alcohol. He stayed sober through July 4, 2013, and then the drinking began again. The binge drinking soon followed and progressed until he hit another bottom in November 2013. One morning, after realizing he couldn’t stop drinking despite his best efforts, he called his mom, who had stood by him through all of his struggles, and asked her to take him back to Fairbanks. This time, he dedicated himself to working the program and joined a recovery community for continuing support. Dan claimed sobriety for a year and half after that point, taking tokens as if he was sober but admits to drinking twice during that timeframe. He never really felt like he was like the other people in the recovery community he attended, many of whom couldn’t function without a drink. Dan saw himself differently, still feeling like he was
choosing to drink, not that he was powerless over it. He continued to attend, although not quite as often, still feeling like he didn’t really belong with the people there. Dan says, “As I began to reach new professional heights and the monetary gains that came with that success, I started to place importance on material possessions again. My ego quickly came back. I was trying to control my life and make it look like what I wanted it to be – in a bad way.” He tried to separate himself from his addiction and hid his struggle from almost everyone. He was convinced that if he could keep up appearances and be successful at work, he could keep control over the alcohol and wouldn’t have to own his struggle to those close to him, including his girlfriend whom he was living with at the time.
He even called his mom one of those nights, from in front of the liquor store, hoping that if he heard her voice, it would make him want to not drink. It didn’t, and on Thursday of that week, Dan’s mom entered his house to find him incoherent in an alcoholinduced stupor. As horrible as that moment was and as much as he regrets the pain he brought to his family with his drinking, that turned out to be the answer to his prayers. After an initial trip to the hospital, Dan went directly to the La Verna Lodge Addiction Treatment Center for an intensive 30-day in-patient treatment program.
Dan credits his treatment at La Verna Lodge with truly saving his life. He says at that point, he finally realized that if he had to ask himself if he was alcoholic, then he was “I was more successful than ever with my indeed an alcoholic. It was the first time he career at Angie’s List. He owns his role in the recovery have nothing to numb the pain, it’s pretty process, a big part of which is him giving miserable, so you turn back to the only thing control over to a power greater than himself. that’s worked – alcohol,” Dan shares. He has recommitted his life to Christ and attends Heartland Church regularly as Dan began drinking and going out to clubs well as participating in a men’s small group again with his girlfriend and friends, and through the church. Getting grounded in the binges soon followed. He found himself his faith, spending time daily in prayer and back in the spiral, all the while keeping meditation and working to serve others are up appearances, excelling at work and the pillars of Dan’s process for staying in convincing everyone around him that he had recovery and on the sober path. it all under control and that life was good. That was far from the truth, and despite Giving back and supporting others is what having bottomed out before, the biggest Dan feels is his mission now. He goes back crash was still to come. to La Verna Lodge several nights a week to support others going through recovery and In February 2016, after losing himself in a also Fairbanks to share his story as a source week-long binge, Dan says that is when he of encouragement for others. Dan has focused his efforts on maintaining his wellness as well as his sobriety and credits weight lifting and his time in the gym with helping to save him from hitting bottom harder than he did. His sobriety ignited a new passion in him, and although Dan has always been disciplined about fitness and nutrition, he began working with a dietician, Austin Dossey, and a posing coach and mentor, IFBB Professional Ryan Stanton. The encouragement and direction that he received from Austin and Ryan, as well as his health and wellness director at the Angie’s List Fitness Center, Kelsey Taylor, prepared him for his first physique competition in just seven weeks, a feat nearly unheard of in the competition world. Dan, with the support of Austin, Kelsey, Ryan and his family, took first place in both of his classes and was named the Overall Champion in his class at his first competition August 27, the NPC Natural Indianapolis. His most recent competition was September 24 at the NPC Grand Prix. His success at his first show earned him an invitation to compete on the national stage and attempt to win his pro card, which he plans to do in 2017. Dan is looking forward to the challenge of pursuing that goal while continuing to work his recovery plan. Dan says he is certain now that his struggles with alcohol are not for nothing, that he is being prepared for a bigger purpose and to have a significant impact on others that are facing similar struggles. He doesn’t know exactly what that will end up looking like or how that will manifest in his life exactly, but he is committed to being of service to others and following the road in recovery to wherever that leads him. When asked what he hopes his legacy will be, Dan replies, “My purpose is to help others and share my message. I’m not ashamed of my story anymore. I’m proud of the fact of where I am. I pray every morning for God’s will to be done in my life and that I can be of service to others. That’s my purpose.” To keep up with Dan's journey and for daily motivation, follow him on Instagram @devoteddan or visit devoteddan.com.

The Zancanaros are all about serving both the local and international communities. As much as possible, they included other nonprofits as they built and outfitted The Well. Furniture was bought from a nonprofit that employs ex-prisoners to make the furniture. Store shelves spotlight products from other nonprofits, such as Joyn handbags which are made by outcasts in India. Like the other two Well locations (two more are under construction), the Zancanaros are establishing a “Wishing Well” board where people post their needs, and others can fulfill them. “It can be as little as ‘I need a ride to somewhere’ to we had one girl who was a second semester senior at Lipscomb and could not pay her tuition, and her tuition was paid,” Debbie said. BUY A CUP OF COFFEE, HELP BUILD A WELL Thus far, the coffeehouses combined have funded 13 wells. Once a location is decided upon, on-the-ground partners handle the legal and governmental issues. The Well works closely with Christian Relief Fund, Blood:Water, Life Water International and Mocha Club. Depending upon the site, the building process can be tricky. Droughts make for difficult drilling, and no infrastructure means wells have to be augured by hand.
FUTURE PLANS With the Fishers location off to a quick start, the Zancanaros are hoping that they will have the funds for their first well in Haiti in months. Other future goals include the following: • Taking The Well baristas to visit the wells firsthand. • Funding a well each month. • Creating a second brand of coffee named Jerry Can (a Jerry Can is a water container). Proceeds from sales would provide a dedicated water collection container to families, thereby reducing contamination issues. • Establishing relationships with the coffee farmers directly (most from Honduras) and roasting their own beans versus working with brokers, thus passing more money directly to the farmers. Ultimately, The Well has taken what is many people’s beverage of choice and turned it into a way to pay it forward. Want to help? • Buy coffee and a meal or snacks at The Well in Fishers. • Add a donation to your total at checkout. • Write a donation check and give it to the cashier. • Donate online at wellcoffeehouse.com/projects.

"I'm always having the best time of my life at these games," Allan said during a break from meeting the crowd before a recent game. "I'm blessed to be with this team, and I'm really enjoying this third season. We have the greatest fan base, and I love talking with them. There is a real party atmosphere before and during the games. There are a lot of interactive things going on such as the face painting, bidding for jerseys and hitting a tennis ball into a goal. It's a lot of fun." Allan, who is also the emcee for The Indianapolis Indians, said staying busy works for him. "It doesn't leave me with a lot of time to get into trouble," he laughed as he gave a fan a high five. NITRO IGNITES THE CROWD
I'm excited from the time the doors open until they close."
No one gets Fuel fans riled up the way Nitro, the team mascot, does. He knows how to mingle and get everyone fired up about the games.
Nitro says he doesn't have any trouble getting around the ice rink or the coliseum.
"The best part of being Nitro is being a part of the game itself," Nitro said in a recent interview. "I love the noise, the crowds, the music, the team and the whole experience.
"I just use my eyes and look for fans," he laughed. "I am pleased that everyone is happy to see me. Kids are always excited to see me and want to chase after me. That's

great because I'm like a big kid myself." Nitro likes to keep his true identity as secret as he can. He says he's like a super hero. He wants to keep people guessing. He's usually good at getting around, but he does have a mishap now and then. "I fell down behind the Zamboni machine one night, hit the wall and fell down. I had a hard time getting back up, and the audience roared with laughter. They loved it. I grabbed on to the back of the Zamboni and was dragged across the ice. They laughed even more." Nitro, who graduated from the University of Arkansas, said he hasn't seen the Netflix comedy "Mascots" yet, but he says many of his mascot buddies appear in it. "I would really love to see it," he stated. "I've heard it's very funny. I hope it shows how much fun it is to be a mascot."
PILOTING FROM WAY UP HIGH
Spencer Stevens has a bird's eye view of all the Fuel game intermissions from his post in the rafters. He watches from a lofty position as he pilots a 16-foot blimp with his remote control. "The crowd loves it, and I enjoy looking for a fan who is not paying attention, so I can land the blimp near his or her head," Stevens said. "I also fill the blimp with prizes and drop free tickets, Chickfil-A gift cards and Community Health Network information. I also chase after Nitro and hit him in the back of the head with the blimp." Stevens works at Hobby Shop RC (Radio Control), 1102 S. Franklin Rd., Suite A, Indianapolis. He pilots the blimp with his dad, Marty, and John Gaither, who also pilots a blimp at the Indianapolis Colts games.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY CREATES STEM INSPIRED HIGH SCHOOL IN INDIANAPOLIS Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies
On October 3, 2016, Purdue University announced the launch of a unique partnership between Indianapolis Public Schools and the city of Indianapolis that will result in a STEM focused charter school. Purdue Polytechnic High School which will be an IPS Innovation Network School, will open in the Fall of 2017. Purdue President Mitch Daniels said, “We thank IPS and the city for the partnership, which we hope will build a new pathway to Purdue and to successful careers for future students from downtown Indianapolis. Students enrolled in the school, which will be located in the former PR Mallory building at 3029 E. Washington Street but during renovation of that location, the inaugural class will have temporary residence nearby at 201 S. Rural Street.” Mayor Joe Hogsett is thrilled for the partnership and investment Purdue is making in the community. “When the doors to the
school open in a little more than a year, we will be doing more than merely putting Indianapolis kids in a high quality educational environment, we will be heling the Young mean and women from Englewood and other Eastside neighborhoods reach their full potential, prepared for today’s fast-moving economy.” IPS Superintendent, Lewis Ferebee is thrilled with the partnership and shared that, “it is certain to have a profound impact on IPS students, our educators and our community.” He further added, “With the expertise of Purdue’s faculty and research, we have the opportunity to inspire students and unlock their limitless potential.” The school has been in the development stage for over a year. The high school curriculum will mirror the Purdue Polytechnic Institute on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus and will serve as a pipeline to the college. Applications are available through the high schools website at https://pphsi.purdue.eud/(Https://pphsi.purdue.edu/) and are being accepted from October 3, 2016 through February 3, 2017. Students who live within IPS boundaries will have first preference for spaces.

HSE TEACHER JAMIE FOLLIS INSPIRING STUDENTS THROUGH CREATIVITY Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Demi Lawrence
His day job may be as a social studies teacher for Hamilton Southeastern High School, but like everyone else who works in the building, Jamie Follis has an array of outside interests. What’s interesting about his life outside of teaching is that he works at conventions for Lucasfilm, sculpts, has created figurines that have gone viral and has launched cosplay participants to explore a new realm of steampunk. Follis brings his creative element into his classroom by creating a course on comparative religions, inspiring learning through games and by creating a film club like no other. Follis began his teaching career at HSE in 1999. Within a couple of years, he was one of only a few teachers in the state of Indiana instructing AP World History, which began in 2001. He is the only AP European History teacher in the building. In the history courses, Follis incorporates various games based upon subject matter throughout the year. One such game was a Cold War simulation where the students were separated and could only speak through red phones. The Cold War simulation included the space race, Olympics, arms race, propaganda and spies.
Feedback from students indicated that they were exhausted from all of the paranoia, and a few had to take a nap when they got home. As the district was becoming more diverse, Follis proposed a course on comparative religions. After a lengthy approval process and not knowing how the course would be received, enough students enrolled to fill 12 sections of 30 kids each. The course is identified by the State Department and guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Follis, who is accustomed to being observed, received an email from the State Department that he would have some guests in his classroom. These guests represented the King of Morocco and were members of his entire Cabinet. This delegation had dined with the Clintons the evening before and was in Fishers, Indiana, to observe Follis’ class the next day. Other observers via the State Department include a high-ranking Muslim leader from Russia, a Chinese delegation and a Canadian Minister of Education. "Dignitaries and heads of state have visited Mr. Follis' classroom," says Phil Lederach, Director of Secondary Education for Hamilton Southeastern Schools. "Just think about that for a moment. How many high schools have had the entire Cabinet of the King of Morocco in for a classroom visit? It is an incredible accomplishment and a real atFishers.com / NOVEMBER 2016 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 25
learning experience for his students." “It felt for a while that we were one scenic tourist site to check off a list,” says Follis, who says the interesting observations happen periodically but now average once every year or two. "I made up this class to accommodate the diversity of religions and felt it was necessary. A lot of kids go off to college and feel far more accepting. Their roommate may be Zoroastrian. The students make more friends, are more tolerant and accepting. This is vital in our 21st century world.” Just as Mary Armstrong has a play and a musical each year, Follis thought, “Let’s make a movie!” What Follis has created is a Film Production Club. Follis culls the talent in the group to encourage everyone to find their niche of creativity. “The first year was a failure, but these can be the best learning opportunities,” shares Follis. “So we have worked out the kinks and have created some meaningful films. We have so many really talented kids here and so many great resources to utilize.” Students begin by writing the screenplay. The resources include the orchestra, wood shop, maker space, editing lab, sewing machines for costumes and a theater. “The seniors mentor and lead the production,”
shares Follis. “This is not ‘five friends and an iPhone;’ this is a collaboration of extremely talented kids who discover shared interests and make new friends. Some of these kids are rooming together in college, and for many, creating this film is their crowning achievement in high school.” The timeline for this production is impressive. From start to finish and given the quality and substance of the efforts involved, to complete a movie from script to screening within one school year is no small feat. Former students of Follis’ attend NYU, UCLA and USC. Many of them are majoring film. “Not many incoming college freshmen can say they worked with a 100-person crew on a full-length feature film while in high school,” states Follis. "Jamie Follis has the ability to take his eclectic personal interests and integrate them seamlessly into his classroom," says Lederach. "He is able, somehow, to share with student his love of art, filmmaking, history and comprehension of world religions in ways that engage students and deepen their experience at HSE." In his spare time, Follis is a sculptor. His pieces revolve around pop culture, including “Star Wars.” He put new spins on them, redesigning them in various ways. This has become a common thing to do in the comic and gaming industry. A breakout collection for Follis was steampunk Justice League, which earned him a great review with DC Comics. Follis started creating his figures for fun, and the work quickly gained in popularity, thanks to the Internet. He can now post a line on his website, and it just takes off from his fan base, going viral almost instantly. “I kept my sculpting private, but one day, I saw a student with a photo of a Wild West
Boba Fett I designed as his wallpaper on his laptop. I told him, ‘Hey, I did that,’ and he didn’t believe me,” shares Follis. “It was then that I realized that I should share this aspect of my life with my students and be open about it. It’s not a secret, but it was personal, and I wasn’t sure how it would be received.” Now he shares his website on day one, so there is no secrecy ... underground. Follis spoke at the Fishers Library on “Star Wars” toys. He shared a slide of himself playing with “Star Wars” toys as a kid and a photo of himself with George Lucas whom he had the privilege of meeting while he was working at one of the Lucasfilm conventions. Follis is now a staple at conventions where he is paid to present on panels. Follis became connected with Lucasfilm by helping at a convention here in Indianapolis called Celebration 2 when the new trilogy of “Star Wars: Episodes I-III,” were being released. During that show, Follis worked with Frank Diorio to help children create dioramas of scenes from a Galactic city. This is one of the few areas during a convention where there are no items for sale; it is where parents work with their children to create something. “I have had stars from the movie tell me our area at the convention is their favorite,” shares Follis who spends as much time as he can with his daughter, Katie. He even has set up a desk for her next to his own, so that they can work on creative projects side by side. During his summers off from teaching, while his wife Tammy is at work, Katie gets a lot of daddy time. This past summer, Follis turned down an offer to work in Los Angeles on the “Mystery Science Theater 3000” after his longtime collaborator comedian Patton Oswalt
26 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com
recommended him. Instead, he chose to work on a local movie production with Joe Crump. “I agreed only if my daughter could join me. Summer is our time,” shares Follis who was Art Director/Production Designer for “The Storyteller.” Follis helped create the visual imagery for the film. One prop Follis made for the film was a sculpture made from vinyl records for one of the character’s rooms. That prop now resides in Katie’s room, which she thinks is “totally cool.” “I loved working on ‘The Storyteller’ movie set this summer with my dad because I got to meet great people and have fun on a real movie set,” says 10-year-old Katie Follis, who inspires to become an Imagineer at Disney or an actor. “My dad often asked my opinion on his projects, and I give him my advice and ideas for new projects. Sometimes, he takes it, and sometimes he does not.” “After working with Follis in the film production club and alongside him on ‘The Storyteller’ this summer, it is clear where Jamie's passions lie,” shares former student Bryce Reif, a sophomore journalism major at USC who is applying for USC film school. “He loves his students and can connect with them by any means, whether it be through a shared love of ‘Star Wars’ or his appreciation for good storytelling. In film club, he sets up his students for success by creating a microcosm of the actual film industry, so they have the tangible experience of working closely with many others. Early on, that is crucial in any field a student may wish to go into. From what I understand, he aims to open minds and give people confidence going forward in whatever way that may be.” For more information on Jamie Follis’ creations, visit sillof.com. Four Day Ray owners (left to right) Brian Graham, Chris Welsh , Mitch Ackerman and Matt Troyer wanted to bring a landmark brewery to downtown Fishers.
Writer / Kara Kavensky . Photographer / Brian Brosmer 28 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com
“Four Day Ray” was a nickname given to a railroad worker who called off work one day a week. The acronym FDR also pays homage to our 32nd President who, during his first year in office, ratified the 21st Amendment and brought an end to prohibition. A new brewery in the Nickel Plate District of Fishers pays homage to both by borrowing their name and initials for a new venture centered around craft beer and a gastropub bistro.
the brewing formulas. Graham created the recipes, and the team tested their brews for over two years to create a solid, scalable product. Once confident with their results, the concept of a full production facility and complementing services were added. Troyer and Welsh bring their own acumen to the team, handling the real estate and business elements for the venture.
The founders of FDR settled upon the Nickel Plate District after extensive Four Day Ray brings together beer lovers searching for an ideal location. The team Brian Graham, Mitch Ackerman, Matt Troyer aspired to create more than a production and Chris Welsh. The idea originated with facility. Discussions with the City of Fishers Graham’s wife encouraging him to turn his began in 2014 with location and permitting 20-plus year hobby into a business venture. approved in 2015. “Over the course of a year, we dialed in our focus and expanded Graham began planning FDR in 2012. the original plan,” shares Welsh. family-friendly,” says Welsh, a father of five. In addition to filling their own taps, FDR is supplying to other restaurants and bars. They are achieving this with a 3 vessel, 15bbl brewhouse, along with 4 fermenters and 2 bright tanks which gives them a production capacity of about 2000 bbls per year. “I am excited about FDR and confident with the direction we are going,” says Ackerman. Four Day Ray may be new, but the experience is one that resonates from a seasoned, experienced team. “We make an exceptional product,” states Graham. “No cutting corners. With our technical brewing process, if the flavor is off, we make adjustments and begin again. We strive for consistency and have an exceptionally high standard of quality.”
“There’s a story behind every brew."
The attention to detail put into the Four Day Ray concept extends from the brewing process to noticeable features throughout the building. From the hooks and charging outlets under the bar to the A/V options in the meeting room on the second floor and the walkup access for patrons for growlers, the consideration for a positive customer experience is clearly a priority. The wood beams, lighting and natural accents give a feel of Old World industry. Industrial garage doors open to outdoor patio seating with heat lamps, a fire pit and retractable awnings for sunshade. Another thoughtfully planned experience is the walkup line. Customers can grab a growler or retail merchandise “to go” without disrupting the service staff in the main dining room or at the bar. Experienced Chef Andrew Miller, a graduate of the College of Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University, was
brought on to lead the scratch kitchen. “We are a world bistro, featuring globally inspired food. We will add and change items as we grow and welcome customer feedback,” shares Miller. The ciceronetrained staff is ready to match a beverage with any food item on the menu and ready to assist with the extensive craft offerings with spirits as well. Of the 18 taps to fill inside the bar, FDR has produced Track Jumper IPA, Doonright Scottish Ale, Laplander Blonde, Coffee Blonde, Brick Arch Porter, Inauguration Day Stout, Take The Day Mild, Identity Crisis, Coffee Blonde and Malty Mofo Stout so far. Guest bottles will be available. The guys warn to be careful around them, for friends and customers are fair game for inspiring a beer. “Naming the beers is part of the fun. For instance, we have had an eccentric electrician named Igor,” says Ackerman. “For winter, we are making a 30 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com
Russian Imperial Stout called Prince Igor.” Their Laplander Blonde, which inspired a mural on the side of the building that’s drawing some attention, is an early popular brew. “The Laplander is a great boat beer,” says Ackerman. “It’s malty and sweet with a fruity character. It’s a medium-to-light beer and finishes dry with hints of citrus, cedar and marmalade. It’s to be enjoyed any time of day.” “There’s a story behind every brew, and we encourage our customers to ask our staff about these,” says Graham. Troyer indicates the drink selection has a “heavy focus on craft” with Indiana artisan Cardinal Spirits, Hotel Tango and small batch wineries on their list. Non-alcoholic craft root beer and sodas are also featured.
“We are a brewery with a really great food concept. We are focused on a high level of excellence with our execution of this facility,” says Welsh. “Our focus is creating a brand with the ambition of becoming one of the best in the state,” adds Welsh. “But first, we want to make this location a great place by creating a great experience.” If you can be successful in your own backyard, global domination may happen later.
