Darren Heil has served ten years as a youth minister and learned about the challenges our youth face every day. He enjoyed being a positive role model and knew in his heart that other adults would like the chance to make a difference too. So he developed YMI (Youth Mentoring Initiative) and launched it in Fishers Junior High in 2010. Read the story starting on page 24 to see the difference Heil is making in our community and how you can help!

ndiana’s generally feeble embrace of physical activity is well documented. We’ve all heard it: Get outside! Move! So, instead of beating a dead horse about exercise, the Hoosier Mountain Biking Association (HMBA) is beating the drum for its all-ages mountain biking trek at the forthcoming Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience. Produced by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Hoosier Outdoor Experience is an extravaganza of highly-participatory activities taking place September 21 and 22 at Ft. Harrison State Park in Lawrence. The free event features canoeing, riflery, horseback riding, archery,

and scores of other choices. “Forty to fifty organizations will be there to get people outdoors, and to introduce new kinds of outdoor recreation,” said Steve King, HMBA board member. “We are the biking organization and we want folks doing something they’ve never considered trying.” In recent years, HMBA carved three permanent mountain biking trails in the hills and dales of Ft. Harrison State Park including a one-mile Beginner’s Trail described as flat, tight, twisty and fun; the Lawrence Creek Trail, a fourmile excursion with topography similar to Brown County with more hills and challenges for intermediate riders; and the Schoen Creek Trail, not long, but grueling for expert riders who are looking for a serious challenge. “DNR wanted us to introduce kids to mountain biking and to show off the Ft. Harrison trails,” explained Mark Finney, Bicycle Garage Indianapolis (BGI), which is a major HMBA supporter.
At Outdoor Experience volunteers will fit kids and adults with helmets and appropriately sized bikes, and teach novices how to negotiate simple trail obstacles. Kids will ride on guided tours of the flat, one-mile Beginner’s Trail, winding through park woods with a few minor elevated grades and turns. The advice for first-timers is simple. “Keep your eyes up and pedal, other than that, you’re in good shape,” said a smiling Finney. The bikes for the event are donated along with equipment used to mark the trails. “BGI has a large fleet of mountain bikes in all sizes that we’ll add to those owned by HMBA. Do Indiana Off Road (the state’s largest promoter of mountain biking events) is generously donating trail obstacles and the snow fencing for safety barriers,” Finney noted. DNR’s overarching purpose for Outdoor Experience is to provide a free opportunity for people to

experience activities that are available at DNR facilities, and to get people into parks who don’t normally visit them. Last year, about 30,000 visitors flooded Ft. Harrison State Park for the rain-or-shine affair, and HMBA is seeking volunteers for this year’s event. “Biking experience helps, but isn’t necessary,” explained Justin Whitaker, bike event promoter. “It’s a great volunteer opportunity. Seeing a six-year-old kid on training wheels go across a log is really amazing and rewarding.”

If you’re still undecided about trying mountain biking, or are worried it’s only for the “cool kids”, well, veterans describe it as just great fun for all. “This isn’t Spandex and leg shaving. We have a blast doing it,” said an enthusiastic Finney, who jokingly said it’s okay if you want to put playing cards in your bike spokes. Some readers are old enough to understand that!
Admission is free, including parking at the Finance Center where buses will ferry visitors to the park. A state park membership pass is not required for attendance. Additional details including volunteer sign-up available at www.hmba.org.

Taking It Off & Keeping It Off | Laurie Seland Losing 75 pounds with Skinny Up has dramatically changed my life! Much of the focus in our American culture is about the “losing weight” part of our journey. It feels awesome to say, “I have lost 75 pounds!” What I have learned over the past two years is that “keeping it off” is a new journey and commitment. I’ve certainly learned a lot about myself: such as the stressors that trigger me to craving sugar or something salty, feelings about food and socialization, what going out to eat means to me, etc.
more physical activity into your week as you are ready. Getting an accountability partner to exercise with is also helpful. Building muscle reduces the fat that you have on your body and the lean muscle will burn more calories too! • Remember you are on a journey. Life is a process. Refine habits and lifestyle choices as you go. Have a bad day? That’s okay. Make better choices tomorrow. Use these ideas and tips to maintain your goal weight. By taking small steps to maintain weight loss, you can avoid ever having to go on a diet again. Make healthy choices for a lifetime – your body will thank you.
Here are some tips that have helped me maintain my weight loss: • Get a support system. Have someone to talk to and encourage you as you continue to make healthy lifestyle choices. Surround yourself with like-minded people and you will be more likely to maintain your weight loss. Or use an app like myfitnesspal. com to keep you focused or to encourage you in your new way of eating. Continue to monitor what you are eating; even try using a food journal to keep track of those extra bites that pack on calories. • Educate yourself. Learn about healthy eating. When you feed your body with good nutritious food and you feel great, it inspires you to continue treating your body well with regard to optimal health. Check out books from the library regarding clean eating or Paleo dieting. Find a website that provides healthy living ideas such as www.livestrong.com. Go to your local Whole Foods store and try eating something new. Try one new healthy recipe a week. • Weigh yourself regularly so that the weight does not creep back on, and to bring some accountability. Look at your scale as a tool, not as your enemy and make adjustments as you see your weight fluctuate. • Exercise and move. Find an activity you enjoy and do it. Add more and 10

PRO MA RT IA L A R TS ARMOR Program Helps Kids Gain Confidence
| Beth Taylor “My husband and I were looking to open a business, and we knew that we wanted to do something that gave back to the community,” said Neeta Pulliam. “The ARMOR Program sold us.” ProMartial Arts is a franchise, and the ARMOR Bullying and Predator Prevention Program is a trademarked program owned by the franchise. The Pulliams enjoy presenting the non-violent, antibullying overview program to elementary schools and youth organizations, free of charge. If kids enroll in the studio program, they practice self-defense moves and engage in conversations on various types of bullying. The ARMOR Program has two components. The program begins with 12 weekly lessons on how to prevent bullying, followed by 12 lessons on predator prevention. Presentations are tailored to two age groups — nine and under and ten and over. Lessons do repeat so that students can join at any time. The bullying prevention portion begins by providing students with skills to recognize bullies and empowers students to set personal boundaries. This part of the program utilizes martial arts defensive skills as the last resort. It also teaches students what cyber bullying is and how to avoid it. “Schools have zero contact policies. We use martial arts techniques from the Korean art of Tang Soo Do to teach how to get away,” said Pulliam, owner of the Fishers

franchise. “For example, if someone were to grab your shirt, these techniques teach you how to break the hold. The student gains confidence by learning to get away from bullies.” The predator prevention portion of the program teaches kids that the real safety concern isn’t strangers but actually strangeness, as well as the importance of listening to their instincts and why they should always tell a trusted adult if they feel they’ve been in an uncomfortable situation. Additionally, sessions emphasize online safety and the importance of good communication between children and parents. “The problem of online predators is widespread. We want to make the children aware of what can happen so they can avoid harmful situations,” said Pulliam. Both components of the ARMOR Program have been created based on research from child safety and crime prevention experts. After a child completes the program, parents can expect to see a stronger, more self-confident child. “Talk with your children at dinner or in the car about topics they’ve heard in the news (like bullying). Keep communication open,” advised Pulliam. Beth Taylor is an experienced freelance editor and writer whose work has appeared in several community magazines during her 15-year career. Crafting a freelance business has provided her the opportunity to stay at home with her two young daughters.

Making Dam Sure
How Safe Are Indiana’s Dams, Including Geist? | Neal G. Moore It is arguably the most important man-made structure in northeast Marion County. Standing 799 feet tall, the Geist Reservoir dam is impressive in scope, and yet people pass by it daily without giving the dam much thought. It’s there and the water stays where it’s supposed to. If, however, the structural integrity of Geist dam were ever seriously compromised, the result could be catastrophic. It pushes the limit of understatement to say that thousands of people, homes and businesses rely on a safe, structurally sound Geist dam. Earlier this year, a highly critical report was issued by a blue-ribbon engineering association about America’s decades-old infrastructure – including the condition of its
dams. The 2013 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure provided a sobering judgment of Indiana’s roads, bridges, dams, wastewater treatment facilities and the like. Using the familiar letter-grade system to rank the quality of each state’s infrastructure, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) slapped Indiana with a grade of D, based on physical conditions and needed fiscal investments for improvement. Hoosier dams earned the lowest of Indiana’s marks, managing only a D-. Citing Indiana data, ASCE reported that more than 50 percent of the 1,088 dams regulated by the state needed remediation, adding that, “today many dams in Indiana are deficient as a result of age, deterioration, and a lack of maintenance.” The report also noted that many of the state’s dams were built 30 or 40 years ago. The report’s troubling data prompted Townepost (publisher of atGeist and atFishers magazines) to seek a status report on the Geist dam. This is what we learned.
basis to ensure there’s no seepage,” explained Malone. A piezometer is an instrument for measuring the pressure of a fluid.
Construction on the earthen and concrete Geist dam was completed in 1943 – 70 years ago. “We would describe the Geist Reservoir dam as being in very good condition,” said Ed Malone, director of production, Citizens Energy Group, when questioned about the dam’s structural integrity. “We have no concerns related to its age. We inspect to evaluate the conditions associated with the dam, and any predictive or preventive maintenance needed.”
While there is every reason to believe the Geist dam is structurally sound, and that it is subjected to rigorous safety inspections and regular maintenance, one potential threat looms – an earthquake. The New Madrid Fault Line centered in southeast Missouri is capable of causing a significant earthquake with shock waves reaching Indiana. The New Madrid zone had four of the largest North American earthquakes in recorded history, and seismologists have long warned it is overdue for a seismic event of some consequence. New Madrid researchers say a violent shifting of its tectonic plates could potentially result in significant damage in seven states, including Indiana. The Wabash Valley fault system is also capable of wreaking seismic damage.
Geist Reservoir and the dam are privately owned assets of Citizens Energy Group (CEG). The dam is subject to regulatory oversight by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and carries a federal designation as a high-hazard dam, meaning a failure could cause loss of life, homes, buildings, utilities, etc. High hazard dams in Indiana must be inspected every two years. CEG’s Malone noted that the Geist dam receives annual inspections by a third-party engineering firm. “Typically, there may be minor issues that are fixed immediately. The dam and spillway are monitored daily [by CEG], 365 days a year. Someone is there to physically inspect it, looking at both sides (of the structure),” he explained. According to the DNR, in July of last year, Indianapolis engineering firm Cardno ATC conducted the required third-party inspection of the Geist dam, giving it an overall “fair” rating – the second-highest of five designations. “No existing dam safety concerns were recognized for normal loading [pressure] conditions,” explained Phil Bloom, DNR spokesman, who added, “Infrequent hydraulic or seismic events would probably result in dam safety deficiency” for structures with “fair” ratings. Bloom emphasized that the highest rating (“satisfactory”) is difficult to achieve, and to reach it, “The dam would have to have a safe performance under all conditions, including earthquakes,” he said.
In 2008, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake centered in Illinois struck the Midwest, shaking buildings in Chicago and Indianapolis (source: US Geological Survey report.) DNR spokesman Bloom said, “Possible damage to Geist Dam from an earthquake would depend on conditions such as the magnitude of the earthquake, the geologic condition under the dam,” and other factors. Liquefaction (shaking causing a severe loss of soil strength) is a risk associated with earthen dams. CEG‘s Malone said any such seismic activity impacting the Geist dam would be determined quickly. “We do have tremors periodically Map showing New Madrid and Wabash Valley Earthquake Zones . Source | earthquake.usgs.gov
When contacted by Townepost to discuss the Geist dam, Malone said a considerable amount of dollars are spent to ensure the longevity of each of the utility’s dams. “You’ll find we spend a considerable amount of time and effort… in assuring the reliability of this dam (Geist),” he emphasized. In 2010, CEG made improvements to the dam’s upstream slope and crest (the water side). The work included pouring concrete over steel mats to mitigate erosion; raising the vertical wall on the face of the dam by two feet; replacing security fencing and installing security cameras; and driving metal sheets into the earthen dam to inhibit seepage. “Piezometers inside the dam are monitored on a monthly 16

issue. “You do the best you can with the tools you have. It’s for others to decide when additional funding is available,” said spokesman Bloom. When asked specifically about the safety and inspection record of the Geist dam, DNR did not raise any red flags, and CEG called the dam’s condition very good. “It has been maintained, and continues to serve its purpose. We take that responsibility very seriously and are always vigilant about safety, stability and long-term reliability,” said Malone.
– two or three in the last ten years, very moderate. Also, we have cameras and can see any such seismic action because of water movement.” According to the DNR, the 2012 Geist inspection report concluded, “there is virtually no probability of liquefaction for the soil conditions at [the dam] under any reasonably anticipated ground-shaking.”
It’s worth contemplating, however, what might happen to the dam in the event of a serious earthquake – a force of nature that, as history has shown, is a legitimate threat in the Midwest. A link to ASCE’s Report Card on America’s Infrastructure is available on our website, www.atFishers.com.
Perhaps most troubling is Indiana’s anemic commitment to dam safety: just $400,000 and only five full-time employees, which equates to 217.6 dams per engineer. In 2005, Indiana ranked 25th in full-time engineers devoted to dam safety. The DNR said it is taking steps to proactively address the

Dreaming of a Basement Remodel? Fishers Area Businesses Offer Many Solutions
| Whitney Mucha It’s common when looking at buying a house to put a basement on the top of the ‘must have list’. So you built or bought a house with a basement, but it’s unfinished or not finished to suit your needs or style, now what? Keep reading and I’ll share some great tips I learned by visiting four local businesses that can solve your basement woes, and have you relaxing in your new space before the end of football season.
Show me the money
First, let’s talk about money. We’ve all been inspired by HGTV, Pintrest or even a neighbor’s house but most of those inspirations take money. I haven’t found a nursery yet in Fishers that sells the elusive ‘money tree’ so I went searching for the next best thing, a private banker. Courtney Lloyd, a private banker with STAR Financial, shared with me how she can offer homeowners solutions to their financial needs for a remodel or redesign project. The most important first step in any project is to calculate your budget. Courtney advised, “Many banks have moved away from unsecured lending so it’s important to determine what assets you have that can be used as collateral for a loan. It’s also critical to be prepared to furnish bank statements, investment account statements, mortgage statements, pay stubs, tax returns and other financial information. The more information you present the more efficient and timely a lending institution can be in providing a credit decision.” Typically, banks will use an individual’s credit score and debt-to-income ratio. “Recently, appraisal values have also played a significant role in the decisionmaking process for home improvement lending,” Courtney explained.

The benefits of working with STAR Financial for your financial needs reach beyond Courtney’s expert advice and superb customer service. She added, “At STAR, we have financed home
improvement projects through a wide variety of methods including but not limited to; home equity loans, home equity lines of credit, investment account secured loans, and in some cases unsecured loans.”
Paint the town red…or not?
A basement improvement project can take on many forms. Projects may start from scratch with concrete walls and floors and leave a blank canvas for shaping your own space. Other basements are fully finished but need a refresh or redesign to give your space an updated look. Local Sherwin Williams Store Manager Ted McLendon offered tips and tricks for selecting the best paint and color for your purpose. His store at 12680 E. 116th St., east of Brooks Sydney Brown, Management Trainee offers Dave School Rd., is Adami assistance in selecting the perfect color. always busy with contractors, designers, and homeowners in search of paint and supplies. The staff is well-prepared to assist you in finding inspiration within the store’s selection of over 1500 colors. When selecting a color for your basement remodel be mindful of the lighting in your space. Since basements generally do not have much natural light, be sure to test colors in the space you will be painting. Consider the type of mood you would like to set in your space. The Sherwin Williams ColorSnap app for smartphones is a great way to begin your exploration for color inspiration. Current color trends are rich, adventurous colors inspired by tones in nature. Heavily saturated, watery colors are big sellers. English ivy colors are also gaining popularity. Customers are also showing a lot of interest in classic grays. After you’ve selected your color, it’s time to select the sheen of paint. Ted shared his insight for selecting the right type of paint for your space. “The ‘best’ type of paint will be the one that most closely matches the subjective needs of the room being painted,” he said. “Higher sheen paints

tend to offer more durability. However, it’s important to consider that the more sheen a paint has, the more it reflects light. Reflection of light can often reveal imperfections in drywall or plaster that can be unsightly. Duller sheen paints tend to offer less durability, but diffuse light, thereby hiding imperfections and giving a softer, supple appearance to your walls,” Ted explained.
Hit the floor and give me engineered hardwood?
You’ve moved on to the flooring stage of your remodel and you are ready to wrap up the project and start enjoying your new space. Don’t rush this important stage. Todd Wentico, owner of Wentico and Company, suggests looking at flooring as a long term investment. “Select your flooring based on what you like, durability, and price. Too many people focus only on the price of a product when they are selecting flooring,” Todd explained. There are many options for basement flooring but Todd suggests choosing a good quality-engineered floor because it is more resistant to higher moisture levels found in basements in Indiana. Because basements are now becoming part of overall living space, it’s important to select flooring that you like and want to see every day. If carpet is your choice, Todd recommends a tightly bound commercial grade with a good pad. His experience with restoration after flooding leaves him leaning

uring his ten years as a youth pastor, Darren Heil learned about some of the challenges teens face when emotional support isn’t readily available at home. He enjoyed his role of being a positive adult role model and knew that other caring adults would, too. His passion became finding a way to bring the community together to make a difference for the next generation. Heil began developing the Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI). He launched his first local program at Fishers Junior High School is 2010, followed by a program at Fishers High School less than a year later. “Schools

are the ideal facility in which to provide mentoring to students because students feel that they can speak the truth,” said Heil. Fishers Fire Chief Steve Orusa is beginning his third year as a YMI mentor. After hearing Heil speak about the program at a church service, Orusa knew that he wanted to participate. He now serves on the YMI Board of Directors. Because of his work in public safety, Orusa has seen how the need for acceptance can lead kids to risky behaviors, regardless of academic performance and wealth status. “Group conformity is in, morals and accountability are out. mentees, I talk about understanding one’s own integrity and how to hold themselves accountable,” said Orusa. The YMI program succeeds because of its focus on helping kids with social challenges and confidence issues. “To be a mentor, you need to be able to provide encouragement without conditions,” Orusa explained. He has observed that after kids have a foundation of values intact, they can get through both the good and the bad things that happen. “Mentoring adults have an opportunity to make a difference in the community, and impact the future,” he said.
The participating schools provide YMI with names of students who could benefit from the program. Mentors and mentees are paired based on answers both provide on a compatible life and interest inventory. Common experiences will allow mentors and mentees to bond. Mentoring sessions are held at the school in a comfortable, private setting. Lorna Goodwin, the assistant manager at The National Bank of Indianapolis in Fishers, has always had a soft spot for kids. As the mother of three grown children, she felt that she could provide support and guidance for youth in need. september 2013

When the Fishers Chamber of Commerce reached out to business leaders to mentor for YMI, she knew that she wanted to help. Goodwin spent one semester as a mentor and looks forward to continuing with the program. “Initially, I was surprised by the need for kids to establish a big picture view,” said Goodwin. Mentors share with their mentees how they’ve dealt with a similar problem or situation in their lives, a divorce or loss of a parent, for example. “The kids who are referred to the program are often not setting goals and making good choices. They don’t see that by making choices, certain doors open and others close. Or, how passing Algebra class is the ticket to getting a diploma. They tend to exist in the moment,” said Goodwin. YMI provides training sessions and weekly discussion points. Mentors also get feedback from other mentors. Helping these kids is a positive thing for the mentors, too. “I spend an hour a week with my mentee, and the time flies by, and you do feel like you contribute,” said Goodwin. Hamilton Southeastern School Board President, Diane Eaton, is looking forward to her first session as a mentor. “I’m at a good point in my life to give back to the community,” said Eaton. She sees great value in the YMI program. “The Fishers demographic is changing, and families are changing as a result of our economic reality. Young people need our support and guidance as families deal with struggles,” said Eaton. YMI is looking for more mentors. “We want to add 25 people this semester because we’re starting a new program at the HSE Freshman Campus,” said Heil, who stressed that volunteers are not counseling professionals, just caring adults. “We are recruiting. We want more volunteers and would love to find a corporate sponsor for the organization as a whole so that
we can continue our vision with the highest level of service, integrity, encouragement and empathy,” Heil added.
October 12
On Saturday, October 12, YMI is hosting the Ultimate Dodgeball Challenge fundraiser to benefit the YMI school-based mentoring programs. “We wanted to do something fun and inclusive. Fun competition is good!” said Heil. To find out how to share your life to change a life and learn more about becoming a YMI mentor, contact Carla Hayden at Carla@ymionline.org.

Turner learning the correct way to throw a punch at Krav Maga.
turner takes on krav maga | Turner Edwards What is Krav Maga? A foreign video game? An exotic delicacy? Neither! It’s an Israeli self-defense class. Krav Maga Worldwide, 7264 Fishers Crossing Dr., teaches courtesy, perseverance, bully prevention and self-defense. While that may sound like a lot, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. The goal of Krav Maga is, “To educate and build people mentally, spiritually and physically so that in a time of need, one will be able to defend and attack with maximum speed and efficiency,” reads a promotional pamphlet. “Krav Maga is designed to establish one’s sense of self-worth, to work toward the bringing together of hearts, and ending violence around the world between all peoples, irrespective of color, race, or religion.” I asked owner Jeff Fredericksen what brought him from California to Indiana. He said Indiana was
one of two states not exposed to Krav Maga, and that he wanted to change that. To better understand Krav Maga, and to share what the experience is like, a friend and I took two Level 1 classes taught by different instructors. In these classes, I practiced punching and kicking. On the first night, we learned how to stop a choke. We were also taught the proper fighting stance: 1) Legs shoulder width apart; 2) Take a natural step with your left foot; 3) Lift your right heel. The following night we learned how to protect ourselves and how to counteract should you be knocked onto your back. This technique was very effective. My friend and I had a lot of fun practicing it. One of us would get into position and the other would attack. When executed correctly, the technique works really well. Krav Maga Worldwide offers classes at varying levels of difficulty, ranging from young children to retirees. Why is Krav Maga valuable? “It’s a lot different than traditional martial arts. We don’t have just katas and forms. It’s more of a practical and functional self-defense for all people and all walks of life,” Jeff explained. “It’s very good for discipline. We are more martial than arts.” More information about Krav Maga is available at 317-595-KRAV. Turner is a student at FCI. He is the older brother to Brewer Edwards and the son of Clark and Deidra Edwards. He loves hanging out with his friends and helping neighbors out in a pinch. If you have a story you would like Turner to write about contact him via email at turneratfishers@yahoo.com.

Fishers Mom Delivers Her Own Baby | Tom Britt . Photos | Brenda Staples Photography Imagine you are 8 1/2 months pregnant, you’ve been sent home twice already from the hospital for false labor, and your doctor is on vacation. You’ve enjoyed a typical Sunday afternoon including a trip to Costco and dinner with your parents. Now imagine delivering your baby, by yourself, just a few hours after going to bed. Meet the Hake family from Bradford
Knoll in Fishers – including its newest member! Leslie and Christopher Hake live near 106th and Cumberland Rd. in Fishers with their two year old son, Jackson. On the morning of August 5, Leslie woke up around 12:30 a.m., to some discomfort caused by the baby. This wasn’t the first time she had felt this sort of pain. Following the advice of her doctor, she took a hot shower to relax, hoping the pain would subside. As she returned to bed, Chris awoke. SEPTEMBER 2013

“What are you doing?” he asked. “I think I’m in labor,” Leslie responded. Recalling two previous false alarms, Chris jokingly told Leslie, “Well, if we leave now, we can be back home by 4:00 a.m.” Leslie’s pains became more intense and closer together. At 1:55 a.m., Leslie paged her doctor. In the 10 minutes it took for the doctor to return the call, Leslie was in full labor in her master bathroom. Chris called his mother-in-law to come take care of Jackson so he could rush Leslie to the hospital. Chris returned to check on Leslie just moments later and he could see the baby’s head.

“Call 911,” shouted Leslie to Chris, who by this point – and by his own admission – was in full panic mode. In the mere seconds that it took for Chris to give the 911 operator their home address, and the operator to sound the alarm for neighboring Fishers Fire Department Station 94, Leslie gave birth to her six lb., 10 oz. girl, Kennedy, at 2:17 a.m. First responders arrived to find Chris standing at the front door pointing to the upstairs bath. He told them, “Hurry up, she just had the baby!” Fishers Firefighters Bobby Schlageter and Will Ortiz rushed upstairs only to find Leslie peacefully holding her baby swaddled in a blanket. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Schlageter. “Most of the time we are able to get there before the baby is born and get them to the hospital in time.” Michael Snowden, executive director, Hamilton County Public Safety Communications, admitted this 911 call did not follow their normal protocols. While operators are trained how to deal with childbirth calls, Snowden conceded after listening to

any of us remember the classic ‘Olan Mills’ days of family portraits with either the plain background, the fake library or the wagon wheel. And, the gaze and hand placement had to be orchestrated with complete care. Fortunately photography has come a long way, making the ‘Olan Mills’ days a thing of the nostalgic past. Or it was until Ryan and Lauren Ahlwardt used it as inspiration for their family portrait last year, along with their cat, Rusty. “It was challenging to find a photographer that would do this – not sure they wanted their name associated with this work,” said Lauren. 36

Less than three months after their wedding, Ryan received a call that would quickly change their lives. The ’band’ was getting back together after the chairman of Atlantic Records had viewed a viral video on YouTube of a Straight No Chaser performance. That call changed the course of their lives for the next five years. As Ryan tells the story, it took him all of seven seconds to say, “Yes!” Lauren and Ryan met at Indiana University. As a freshman, Ryan began singing with Straight No Chaser (now named ‘Another Round’), and Lauren was part of ‘Ladies First’, which is the women’s a cappella group. The two met their sophomore year and were dating by junior year. Originally from Hudson, OH, Lauren chose to attend IU for theater and telecommunications, and Ryan earned a degree in marketing from the Kelley School of Business. Lauren works for the corporate office of McDonald’s in Indianapolis.
____________________________________ _______________________________________ Ryan knew that Lauren would completely support his PUBLIC OPEN TO decision to tour and perform withTHE Straight No Chaser (SNC). Performing is what they have done for the better Cost: $5 Chamber part of their lives. Both Ryan and Lauren Members have been singing longer than they can remember. As exciting, and as much $10 Non-Members fun as_______________________________________ Ryan was having with SNC, the life of a performer isn’t as glamorous as it may seem. Sleeping on buses in cramped conditions, late nights, spending extended periods Presenting Sponsor of time away from home can wear on you. Ryan and Lauren found that to be true by year five. “We started considering options and looking around for something else,” said Ryan. Mid-way into year five of SNC, Ryan overheard a conversation while getting his hair cut at Wild Horses salon. The discussion was about Young Life and the parachurch organization’s search for a new area coordinator. A full-time position was opening up, and possibilities were blooming for Ryan. He instinctively knew this is what he wanted to pursue. During his breaks from touring, Ryan would frequently find himself in the choir room at HSE high school, as a fly on the wall. He enjoyed helping out and encouraging the students, not realizing this was prepping him for working with Young Life. “Few people ever find their true calling in life, and you have found two,” said Ryan’s father-in-law about the switch from professional singer to Fishers Area Director for Young Life. Then, there was sharing his decision with the rest of the members of Straight No Chaser. Ryan, a front man for the group, was nervous. “SNC was such an amazing opportunity. I had been so blessed to be traveling with my best friends, enjoying the time spent, but yet knowing I was ready for something else,” explained Ryan. When Ryan joined SNC in college, he replaced Steve Morgan, a graduating senior at the time. Ryan called Steve to get his advice about how to break it to the guys. “Steve had been on Broadway. He is a very talented singer and holds an MBA. When the group was originally re-assembled, his timing wasn’t right and I was in – now timing was good for him. He was to replace me,” said Ryan.
on the weekends at Geist Christian Church north campus as part of the worship team.
Last October there was a charter ‘SNC Cruise’ and Ryan and Lauren decided to break the news to the group at the end of the trip. Ryan’s last performance with SNC was December 23rd, 2012, and he began his Young Life training on January 5th. “It was a fast turnaround,” said Ryan. He was ready for the next new adventure in his life.
Ryan is in a rare position to share his experience of making good decisions that impact his life in a positive way. Being a role model is a natural position for Ryan to undertake considering the life changes he’s experienced in the last couple of years.
Once you open yourself up to possibilities, things start rolling towards you – and Ryan and Lauren have been enjoying themselves and the time together. “It’s nice to have him home more – the travel was tough but we made it work,” she said. And, the couple is performing together
Ryan and Mike Luginbill (’99 HSE grad) of SNC held a fundraiser at the Hearthstone Coffeehouse to raise money for the Young Life summer camp this past spring. Thanks to social media, word spread and the event was a success. Some serious SNC fans drove down from Michigan to enjoy the intimate venue. Ryan plans to consider more performances around the area, but is happy working with Young Life. “The kids are great, and we have a very supportive group of parents. Its exciting to be experiencing such amazing growth!” said Ryan.
As for music, it is a huge part of their lives, and will continue to be (and, perhaps some day there will be three kids in the family portrait along with Rusty’s floating head.) For information about Young Life, visit HSEYL.com.

Taking Shelter in a Storm Tim Sivak and wife Bridget LeClair with son standing next to underground storm shelter in back yard | Laurie Quinn Meet Tom Sivak, executive director of Hamilton County Emergency Management. He and his wife, Bridget LeClair and their son, moved to Fishers last October after accepting the new professional position in Fishers. Tom and Bridget researched house after house when looking for a home in Fishers and fell in love with one that did not have a basement. Some people would think there is nothing to do about the situation and accept that they have no basement in the event of a dangerous storm. With Tom’s background, however, he knew that he could have the house he wanted and still provide a safe shelter for his family during storms. “When it comes to preparedness, awareness is the number one goal,” Tom stated during our interview. Being aware of what could happen will make you take the necessary precautions to be prepared. Tom was deployed to Henryville after damaging tornadoes swept through the southern Indiana town last year. The experience showed that he had to take measures to ensure his family would be safe during 40
fishers c o m m u n i t y

an emergency, and to give him peace of mind while he was out on the job. Tom began researching underground storm shelters (I see your brain envisioning a storm shelter like that in “The Wizard of Oz”, but what Tom found isn’t like that.) He found an underground shelter made of a fiberglass material that can seat five or six people. Yes, I said seat – it has benches molded into the design. There is a latch that can be locked or unlocked from both the exterior and interior of the unit. There are covered air vents so oxygen can get inside while keeping water out. The air vents also serve as a way to communicate with anyone outside of the shelter in the event someone is inside and debris has fallen on top of the unit. (I tested it and could hear the person inside talking after the lid had been closed.) So, let’s get down to the price tag of this storm shelter! I do not have a basement in my house and I know there are many homes in Fishers without basements. Is there a price that you can place on being prepared? This shelter cost Tom and his family $4,500 including installation. This is probably cheaper than a hospital bill for any
injuries should you survive a tornado. It took three weeks for the company to install. Sivak offered some pointers for consideration before installing an underground storm shelter: 1. Check with the Town of Fishers for any license or permits needed to install it. 2. Check with your homeowner association for easements and property lines before installation. 3. Check FEMA standards for safe rooms before purchasing one. 4. Research the company you plan to use before buying one. “I have hesitations referring one company over another to do the job, but just Google ‘safe rooms’ or ‘storm shelters’ and many options will show up,” Tom noted. With his storm shelter installed, Tom knows the next time he’s called out he will have peace of mind knowing he did what was necessary to keep his family safe from a dangerous storm. | Laurie Quinn You can’t tell by my vehicle (a Toyota Sequoia), but I try to live a fairly “green” life. My family eats mostly organic foods and drinks from reusable water bottles. Cleaning days mean I smell of white vinegar. So when I came across a business postcard for a company called ReStone, I read it and instantly called the number provided. I set an appointment with Gary Carpenter, landscaping architect, and Bob Mooney, the owner of ReStone. I was warmly welcomed and offered a chair next to a fascinating side table. I looked at it and noticed it was made of granite squares. Bob noticed I was checking it out and told me that ReStone made it out of reused granite. My eyes quickly started checking out the floors. 42

It was all reused granite but with a twist. The granite was turned upside down, specially washed and applied to the floor. It was then sealed to bring out the natural beauty of each piece of granite. The finished side of granite gets too slippery when wet, but ReStone learned that inverted granite can be used outside in wet conditions, as well as for interiors. This technique works great poolside as granite also resists heat, making the surface cooler for bare feet walking across it. Granite is also resistant to fading and scratches. The pavers are thin enough to be placed over an existing concrete patio but strong enough to be used on a driveway. ReStone is a locally owned and operated company with a desire to keep discarded and leftover granite material out of landfills by re-purposing it as an extremely unique and durable product. ReStone is LEED certified (Leadership and Energy Efficient Design), a designation reserved for environmentally efficient design and build processes used in the architecture and building industries. Here’s how ReStone works. Bob sets out hoppers at different construction sites. When construction workers remove granite from buildings it is placed in the hoppers. ReStone picks up the bins and takes the granite back to their shop. They run these pieces through a patented hydraulic press that cuts and shapes the granite into usable pavers.
These pavers can be used to make anything from tables to exterior walkways and patios. They can also be used inside of a building or house. Bob Mooney started the company in 2011, but as an owner of a demolition company, he has always looked for creative ways to reduce waste on job sites. He learned about ReStone from a colleague in North Carolina and spent a few days with him learning the trade and the benefits of taking on the motto of “Reduce, Reuse, Restore”. 100% of their products come from reusing what otherwise would be discarded material. As a person who is always looking for ways to make the earth a better and cleaner place for my kids and my grandkids, I love their motto and their product. As for my choice in vehicles, I am not planning on giving up my Sequoia anytime soon, but perhaps with companies out there like ReStone, I can start making “clean” decisions for my and my childrens’ future.
ReStone is located at 9715 Kincaid Drive Suite 900 Fishers, IN 46037. Bill Geer, executive clothier for Tom James, provides to your door service for your convenience.
Bring Luxury to Your Door
| Clark A. Edwards
I
f you want to bring luxury to your door, I suggest you invite Bill Geer over. Bill is an executive clothier with the Tom James Company. Bill just crossed into his 19th year providing clients with “to-your-door service” for all manner of clothing. He provides custom and ready-made suits and shirts, casual wear, and golf attire including the Fairway and Green and Zero Restriction lines. In addition, he has shoes by Allen Edmonds, Ferragamo, Cole Hahn and more, and a full catalog of accessories. Bill will come directly to your home or office and assist you with creating not only the most fashionable wardrobe you have ever had, but also the best fitting. If you’re thinking, “I can’t afford custom clothing”, think again – because you really can. Bill has custom cloth for suits that start at $599-$699 including a shirt and tie. Also if you are thinking, “is there really a difference with custom clothing”, the answer is yes. Once you have Bill make you a suit, shirt or trousers that are custom fit to your body, there is no going back. With custom clothing, not only is it tailored to your body, but it can also be tailored to your taste. If you want a single-button jacket with a peak lapel, Bill can do that. Perhaps you want a three-button jacket with flat front pants. Bill can do that. A couple of my favorite touches that Bill puts into my suits are functional buttons on my sleeves which is a true mark of a custom suit. And, the label inside my jackets reads “Turner and Brewer’s Dad”, instead of simply my name. This calls to mind one of the things that Bill has said, “Quit wearing someone else’s name inside your suit and wear your own.”

can provide, and the convenience is tremendous. Once Bill has your sizes determined, you select the fabric you like and he delivers the garments ready to wear. The selection is unparalleled. If you are accustomed to finding seven or eight suits in your size in a retail store, Bill can show you hundreds of fabrics for your garment. Think of it this way – Bill visits your spouse, partner or significant other prior to a birthday or Christmas and they pick out a fabric for a suit or sport coat. When they receive the garment as a gift, not only does it fit and is ready to wear, but your loved one has selected the fabric, so you know they like it. It is a win-win gift! If you ask Bill what the best thing has been about his years with Tom James, he will tell you it’s the relationships he’s built. Bill still has clients from when he started, and now serves the children of clients for their clothing needs. Not only has Bill made clothing for weddings and anniversary parties, he has attended those ceremonies as an honored guest. Bill currently serves between 350 and 400 clients locally, and I will tell you from experience that Bill is one of the most kind, genuine men you will ever meet. He is the epitome of sartorial elegance. I know the relationships are very important to Bill, but I’m guessing that one of his other favorite things is his wardrobe. I am always anxious to see what Bill is wearing when I see him. If you have never heard of Tom James, it doesn’t surprise me. Tom James has been around since 1966 and is the largest custom clothier in the country with annual revenue exceeding 250 million dollars. They do not advertise. Unlike the well-known design houses that spend millions on full page ads in magazines, and put up billboards

in Times Square, Tom James gains business from referrals, and puts money into the clothing not advertising. I encourage you to reach out to Bill Geer and see what he can do for you and your wardrobe. He lives in Bridgewater and will be happy to come by your home or office.
