BLUE IRIS OPTOMETRY
In the heart of Franklin there is a place where patients feel like family, and stepping in for an eye checkup is a comforting and reassuring experience. This place is none other than Blue Iris, the private practice of optometrist Amanda Dininger.
Soon celebrating five years in business, Dininger has created a warm and inviting atmosphere for her patients, where professionalism meets a down-to-earth approach that sets her apart from the rest.
One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk into Blue Iris is Boiler, the emotional support dog that accompanies Dininger in her practice. A COVID puppy, Boiler has become an integral part of the team, providing comfort and companionship to both patients and staff.
Dininger’s approach to optometry is marked by her love for
working with both the young and the elderly. After years in corporate optometry, she took a leap of faith and opened her own practice in 2018. Inspired by a book written by Joanna Gaines, she named her practice Blue Iris, symbolizing faith and confidence. She wanted her practice to feel like a home to both her staff and patients - a place where relationships are built, and genuine care is provided.
One such relationship that touched Dininger’s heart is with a patient her children now affectionally call Grandma Beth. What started as a patient-doctor relationship has blossomed into a deep bond, with Grandma Beth becoming a part of their extended family. Dininger recalls the emotional moment when Grandma Beth was

diagnosed with a detached retina, and they cried together, highlighting the connection and empathy she shares with her patients.
Born and raised in Franklin, Dininger grew up as an IndyCar and Purdue fan, evident in her dog’s name. Her love for the Indy 500 stems from working with her dad as a pit lane liaison. It also led to her meeting her husband, JD, of Janko Realty Group. A passionate Disney fan, Dininger has taken each of her three children, Mollie, Luke and Morgan, individually to Disney World for their fifth birthdays, creating cherished memories with each visit. Outside of work, Dininger enjoys rewatching “Gilmore Girls” with her daughter, and adores the show “Friends,” with Chandler as her favorite character. Traveling with her husband is another cherished pastime, allowing them to explore new places and create lasting memories together. Faith plays a significant role in her life, both at work and at home.
Be sure to visit Blue Iris Optometry on Facebook and Instagram, and go to blueirisoptometry.com for additional details about the practice.

A GLIMPSE BACK AT THE SOLAR ECLIPSE EXPERIENCE Story & Photography Provided 8 | May 2024 | TownePost.com
Thousands of visitors from 44 states and 22 countries descended upon our charming city for the April 8 solar eclipse, and the thing I’ll remember most is how many memories were made that day. There was dancing, singing and cheering at the lawn of the amphitheater. Hundreds of people walked around the beautiful streets of our downtown. The whole town was buzzing with excitement, and magic filled the air from the anticipation of what would be one of the greatest experiences of our lives. From Australia to California to Costa Rica to here, we were all together as a community.
A gentleman from Wisconsin brought his two grandchildren for
three days and two nights during the eclipse. He said they enjoyed their entire stay, and the five hours at the amphitheater on eclipse day was “the best time ever.”
The staff at Festival Country was busy taking visitors’ photos with the giant pair of eclipse glasses in front of the visitor center, while around the corner, the Lions Club had its “I survived the total solar eclipse” photo opportunity.
A visitor from Kentucky said experiencing a total eclipse is

something you will never forget, but experiencing a total eclipse from what felt like a home away from home with such a kind community is something that will be in your heart forever. These anecdotes are truly inspiring. Visitors were blown away by the warm welcome they received in Franklin. It’s amazing how a first impression can impact a person for the rest of their lives. Numerous people said they would come back and visit, and some even said that this is a place where they would love to live one day.
I think we can all agree that the eclipse will go down as one of the coolest experiences our town has ever experienced. But what if I told you that the impact our community had on all the people who came to visit was even better?
The entire day was inspiring, magical, unforgettable and special, and it will be remembered for years to come. We were in the heart of it all, and now we will forever be in the hearts of others who got to experience this oncein-a-lifetime event in our little genuine city of Franklin.

RESIDENTIAL REFRESH
LOCAL 19TH CENTURY HOME GETS A MARVELOUS MAKEOVER
Writer & Photographer / John Wales
Jane is simply stunning. A timeless beauty yet quiet and unassuming. Through the years Jane has been both loved and neglected. Majestic and understated, Jane has stood the test of time and now shines bright. However, Jane isn’t an actress from Hollywood, and in fact, downtown Franklin is where she can be found.
Jane is the name given to a home on Jefferson Street by its new owner, Sonia Quillen.
This Carpenter Gothic home is over 150
years old. Quillen fell in love with the house while visiting a friend who lived nearby. “As I walked by and saw it, I thought, ‘This is not a typical Midwest home,’” she says. “It had lots of character. It was the one.”
The home includes pointed arches and steep gables that instantly draw the eye to the more distinct features, as well as board-and-batten siding. Colorful stained glass window panes adorn an alcove, and above the main entry, a curved window reminds one of the famous “American Gothic” painting from Grant Wood.
The original owners were David and Sarah Bergen. Tax records on the home can be found dating back to 1874, where annual taxes cost the Bergens a lofty $6.01. Later the home on Jefferson Street was passed on to their son, John, who would reside there until he died in the house in 1957.
In the decades after, the home fell into disrepair. The decay mirrored that of many homes and buildings in downtown Franklin at the time, until the 2010s ushered a renaissance period for Franklin. The downtown revitalization spread and eventually reached the doorstep of Quillen’s home.
Quillen is quick to give credit for her home’s renewal to previous owners, Shari Carr and Erin Nicholas. The mother-daughter duo worked to restore the home, maintaining its history while modernizing it to make it safe for families to enjoy for centuries to come. The home required attention from the foundation to the roof. It takes a love of history and the determination to work hard to bring a 19th century home back to life. It also takes a lot of money.
Carr and Nicholas did much of the work themselves. Along the way they found many surprises. Original machine-cut nails and bottles from the early 20th century were found in the basement. Perhaps the biggest surprise was a fireplace hidden behind several layers of remodeling.
TownePost.com | May 2024 | 11
In 2021 the world was still in the grip of the COVID-19 epidemic. Building material costs sky rocketed and completion of the house was in doubt. Then, a visit to a friend once again altered the future of the house.
Quillen, a Shelbyville resident, took a stroll down Jefferson Street to enjoy the revitalized downtown area. Along the walk, she was stopped in her tracks. She found herself marveling at this house, which seemed to be calling out to her. She knew instantly that it was her home.
The house was not for sale, but she was determined to purchase this gem and finish its evolution. She found Carr on Facebook and they shared a single Facebook friend. Quillen messaged Carr about the home.
Carr contacted the mutual friend and was told that Quillen was the perfect person to complete her vision of the home. Quillen estimates the house was 80% finished. She loved the level of detail put into the house,
so a deal was made and she became the new owner in December 2022.
Quillen needed to move by February 2023, so she enlisted an army of local businesses to aid her in completion of the home.
The kitchen received a complete transformation that modernized it while preserving the historical look of the home. Woodworking by Rich, in Whiteland, was called upon to build the cabinets and kitchen island. The massive island serves as the focal point of the kitchen and is topped with a gorgeous countertop from Natural Stone Creations of Franklin.
The fireplace, now visible, needed some attention to make it functional.
Indianapolis-based Brick + Ember Outfitters fixed the existing brick and replaced damaged bricks, then installed a gas insert for instant ambience.
finished the flooring, drywall and paint. Quillen also put some sweat equity into the house. The rich wood staircase and casements, a hallmark of Carpenter Gothic homes, were refreshed to their original appearance. They were treated with linseed oil, which returned the dark finish to a luster, showcasing the wood grain as well as the subtle nicks and bruises the staircase attained over its life. The wood carvings harken to the era when craftsmanship was a standard element of construction.
Marissa Stout was called upon to oversee the exterior transformation of the property. Through the facade grant program of the Franklin Development Corporation, Quillen was able to complete the exterior projects and create tremendous curb appeal.
The repaired and painted board-and-batten siding is complemented by green window casements and black trim. Landscaping enhances the charm and welcomes visitors. Due to the home’s proximity to the Franklin amphitheater, Quillen wanted a private

outdoor entertainment space where she and her family could enjoy the music and entertainment playing nearby. She added a deck to the back of the house.
To protect the home for generations, she enlisted Franklin-based Irish Brothers Pest Control to treat the home for termites. Quillen is very happy with her finished home. “It just feels good,” she says.
She loves being in downtown Franklin, in the middle of everything. She plays pickleball nearby with friends, and walks to local establishments to enjoy coffee or a meal. Her family regularly bikes on the city trails and enjoyed last year’s Fourth of July fireworks on her back patio. She loves her new town, and she loves Jane.
“It’s been a fun adventure,” she says. It’s an adventure she plans to continue for years to come.

A MOTHER’S LOVE
THE ADALYNN MAE JESSEN STORY
Writer / Brandi Waters Photographer / Emily Stewart
It all began with an innocent conversation about a neighbor who had shaved their head amidst a cancer battle.
“Mommy, I want to shave my head,” came from the sweet and kind Adalynn Mae Jessen. A few days later she mentioned to both her parents, Kate and Zach, that she was going to die. Hearing this from their healthy 3-year-old was alarming. In hindsight, this conversation would shed light on the immense power and understanding this little girl had about her own mission during this lifetime. A few weeks later, while watching “Frozen,” Adalynn mentioned seeing two Elsas. Kate was concerned by this statement but didn’t think it was too extreme. However, the next day at the park, Adalynn struggled to walk and had difficulty judging her steps. It was then that Kate, with training in neurological
ophthalmology, knew these could be signs of something worse, and immediately called their pediatrician.
The initial diagnosis was a common ear infection, but Kate politely disagreed and noted her own concerns. Relying on her training and instincts, she sought a second opinion. This doctor, along with her nurse, promptly caught on to additional signs and promptly referred them to Riley Hospital or Children for further evaluation.
Every parent’s worst fear played out that day at Riley, as Adalynn was shuttled from one exam room to another. Despite it all, Adalynn continued to display an extraordinary understanding of the world and her role within it. Doctors and nurses remarked at her composure and abilities, as she articulated and complied with their
requests with understanding and her infectious smile.
On July 22, 2020, the doctor sat down with Adalynn, Kate and Zach, and delivered lifechanging words: “Adalynn has six months to live.” He further explained that Adalynn had a very rare brain cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). It’s a fast-growing and aggressive tumor in the brainstem’s pons area, responsible for vital functions like breathing, heart rate, balance and bladder control. The condition was 100% fatal, the doctor explained, and the family was advised to make the best of the time they had left.
Shocked and bewildered, the family returned home unsure of how to explain this to Adalynn. Realizing time was precious, Kate reached out to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, known for its expertise in childhood cancer. Upon initial discussions, Adalynn was a match for a treatment trial, and as a result they packed their bags and headed to Cincinnati.
Upon arrival they met with Adalynn’s medical team, and learned of the treatment’s potential benefits and expected side effects. Though daunting, Kate and Zach assured Adalynn they would go home if any of it was not something she wanted to do. However, Adalynn insisted she do the trials.
Adalynn’s first treatment, the Skittles study, involved practicing swallowing pills. This preparation was crucial as she would end up taking 70 to 80 pills weekly, along with her additional therapies, in an attempt to stabilize the cancer. One trial alone consisted of 30 rounds of sedated radiation in addition to her daily oral regimen.
14 | May 2024 | TownePost.com
Despite the challenges, Adalynn’s positivity and strength was unwavering. Supported by her parents, she faced each hurdle with a smile, determined to fight not just for herself, but also for others battling sickness and disease. Her resilience and infectious positivity inspired all around her.
Adalynn’s prognosis hadn’t changed significantly, but she was stable and given the all-clear to return home to Franklin. However, they would soon return to Cincinnati when Adalynn developed hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder caused by an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain. She underwent emergency surgery to place a shunt and stabilize her on December 31, 2020. Shortly after this, Adalynn would be diagnosed with a secondary cancer, leptomeningeal disease, on January 7, 2021, which had spread throughout her brain and spine. Despite being given only two weeks to live, Adalynn once again defied the odds.

Adalynn immediately began another round of sedated radiation, infusions, and compassionate chemotherapy treatments. She continued these therapies in addition to her daily oral regime until May 13, 2021, when she peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving parents.
Adalynn’s bedroom remains untouched, serving as a sacred space brimming with memories of her courage, resilience, personality and spirit. Her room is adorned with a poignant memento from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital - a collection of stringed beads representing Adalynn’s journey, symbolizing her bravery. Though Adalynn is physically gone, her spirit lives on.
Kate and Zach still feel connected to Adalynn and report that her presence is still strongly felt at the family farm. Her dolls will appear in the living room, lights will flicker on and off, and little objects she liked will move throughout the house. Their home, once vibrant with Adalynn’s energy,
now resonates with the laughter of her younger twin siblings, Wrenlee and Waylon, as they play around the gravel driveway, interact with the feral cats Adalynn adopted, and tend to chickens, goats, emus and horses.
Adalynn’s legacy extends beyond the family farm; her parents bravely chose to donate her brain to science, contributing to ongoing research on DIPG cancer. Parts of her brain remain at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, aiding researchers in trials and tests related to her own therapies, which pave the way for crucial advancements in understanding the disease. DIPG remains uniformly fatal. Fortunately, new advancements in technology have been made possible by the courageous contributions of families like the Jessens. New reports show that newly diagnosed patients have a post-diagnosis of up to five years, as opposed to the initial estimate of six months.
Kate maintains an active role on The
Cure Starts Now advisory board, funding research and grants for institutions studying DIPG and childhood cancers. Approaching the third anniversary of Adalynn’s passing in May, her legacy lives on, with the Adalynn Strong chapter raising over $170,000 to support research and resources for DIPGaffected families.

SUNNY LAWN FARMS
Sunny Lawn Farms, located just outside of downtown Franklin, is a hidden gem established in 2000 by visionary couple Rob and Doris Morris. Doris, with a background in floristry, had a dream to be the source of the beautiful cut flowers she meticulously worked with. Little did she know that her dream would lead her to transform her grandfather’s dairy farm, once owned by Ennis Reynolds, into a thriving greenhouse, bursting with colors and fragrances.
Doris’s transition from florist to greenhouse owner showcases her unwavering determination and deep love for plants and flowers. While working in floristry, she began to question the origins of the cut flowers she used daily, sparking the idea that she could grow them herself.
“I could be the one to do that,” she recalls.
Despite facing numerous challenges such as ordering supplies, dealing with unpredictable weather, the increasing need
for more space and other unexpected obstacles, Doris persevered, with the support of her husband and dedicated staff. Reflecting on her journey, she says she would encourage her younger self to believe in her ability to succeed.
In a world dominated by big-box stores, local greenhouses like Sunny Lawn Farms face numerous challenges. However, what sets them apart is their commitment to providing constant care for their plants and flowers. The Morrises and their dedicated team are not just sellers; they are enthusiasts who are knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. They go above and beyond to assist their costumers, offering valuable advice and answering any questions that come their way.
The personal touch and expertise that Sunny Lawn Farms provides makes it a haven for plant lovers and gardening enthusiasts. Customers can trust that they are not just purchasing a plant, but also getting expertise and care. Doris’s dedication to her craft is evident in the vibrant array of flowers and plants that
adorn her greenhouse, each nurtured with love and attention to detail.
Sunny Lawn Farms continues to thrive, thanks to support from dedicated customers such as local gardeners and flower lovers, Franklin Parks and Recreation, Franklin College, Compass Park, Bemis Group, and numerous locally organized fundraisers. Their commitment to quality, expertise and personalized service sets them apart in a competitive market.
One thing is obvious when visiting Sunny Lawn Farms - this isn’t just a business. It is an incredibly personal work of love for the owners and their family. As they continue to bloom and grow, Sunny Lawn Farms remains a beacon of inspiration for all who visit.

WHO’S GAME?
PICKLEBALL CATCHES FIRE IN FRANKLIN
The hottest sport in the United States is on fire in Franklin as well.
For the last three years, pickleball has been named the fastest-growing sport in America by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, and the sport has spread like wildfire here too.
Franklin Parks and Recreation Assistant Superintendent Rocky Stultz says the city was introduced to pickleball shortly before the pandemic in 2019, using tennis courts at the Boys & Girls Club. Now, Parks and Recreation boasts 14 pickleballdedicated courts, six of those brand-new at Community Park, and the remaining eight at Youngs Creek Park, which opened in 2022. Various city tennis courts have also been lined for pickleball. The gymnasium at the Recreation and Fitness Center has two temporary courts available on Tuesday and
Thursday mornings as well.
Where do die-hard players go when the weather is less than ideal for outdoor play?
Meeting the demand for indoor play inspired Jenny Deaton to open Drop Shot Pickleball, a 6,600-square-foot facility with three courts at 172 Commerce Drive, in January 2023.
“People were complaining that there was nowhere to play in the winter,” Deaton says. “I was looking for an excuse to retire, so I got the idea and it only took three to four months to come together.”
The facility, open 24/7 and 365 days a year, already has more than 1,500 members, and 300 to 400 players come through every two weeks. Deaton attributes part of that growth to Amy Fox of Franklin. Fox, who has played
for nearly two years, started organizing round-robin tournaments at Drop Shot shortly after it opened. “There were five of us who regularly played, then that turned into 14 within six months,” Fox says. Today there are six 14-player round-robins played at Drop Shot every week.
Growth of the sport in Franklin and Johnson County can also be credited to Troy Wright, USA Pickleball District Ambassador of West Central Indiana. In his volunteer position, Wright promotes the sport to the community and has helped many players learn through his clinics and workshops at Youngs Creek Park. The certified professional coach conducts clinics throughout the summer for beginners, as well as those who have some experience but want to improve their skills. Dates are posted on Franklin Indiana Pickleball Club Facebook page.

Wright and Celeste Hook, unofficially named Mr. and Mrs. Pickleball of Franklin, assist Franklin Parks and Recreation with its annual pickleball tournament at Youngs Creek Park and Community Park. This year’s tournament is June 7 through 9. Starting in 2022, this tournament has expanded to two parks and 14 courts, and has also added skill and age divisions. Those interested can register at pickleballbrackets.com.
What has made pickleball so popular? Many believe it is because of how easy it can be to learn, the diversity of the game, and the fact that there is usually little financial investment to start playing. You can even borrow paddles from the public library before investing in your own.
“People are realizing how fun it is, especially in doubles play,” Wright says. “The smaller court is easier to navigate and it is a good cardio exercise. Young people are getting into it and understand the benefits of playing.”

Deaton and Fox highlight the socialization and fellowship component of the game. “Any age, any gender can play,” Deaton says. “It is generational as well. You can make it whatever you want it to be. It can be social, a form of exercise, competitive - you name it.”
Fox has formed lifelong friendships with former strangers. She started at open play and formed a group organically of the same skill level. Now, this group vacations together several times a year - and of course packs their pickleball paddles.

ELEVATING OUTDOOR LIVING
PATIOSCAPES HELPS EACH CLIENT CREATE THEIR OWN OUTDOOR HAVEN
Writer / Amy Skirvin Photographer / Emily Stewart
For those who seek to transform their outdoor spaces into havens of tranquility and beauty, PatioScapes, owned and operated by Nick Weir, designer and hardscape specialist, offers an unparalleled blend of expertise, creativity and dedication.
PatioScapes, a family-owned business in Franklin, is more than a business to the Weir family; it is a lifestyle. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, Bridget, Nick’s wife for more than 23 years, finds solace in the sanctuary of her meticulously curated outdoor space. The space is a testament to the vision and craftsmanship of her husband. From early morning to twilight, the family’s outdoor retreat serves as a backdrop for unwinding after a long day, as well as gatherings with friends. Surrounded by the comforts of the plush outdoor furniture and the serenades of birds, Bridget is grateful for the respite Nick has created for their family.
The space also gives the couple’s teenagers, Lyla and Brac, a place to get away from daily pressures and reconnect in quiet companionship. As they lounge together, each absorbed in their own pursuits, Nick fires up the Blackstone grill and creates a hibachi-style family dinner experience. They take turns sharing the day’s triumphs and tribulations, bonding over a family meal.

“WHEN THE CUSTOMER LOVES WHAT WE CREATE, IT MAKES ME HAPPY. MANY OF MY CLIENTS HAVE BECOME FRIENDS BY THE END OF A PROJECT.”
—NICK WEIR
The Weirs personal space consists of a 16-by-20-foot upper deck connected to an 1,100-square-foot patio with partial cover, which hosts a living-room space complete with a TV, ample seating and a fire table. Additionally, they have an outdoor kitchen and hot-tub area, all designed to bring family and friends together.
“Last month we had 25 girls from Lyla’s team over,” says Nick. “They were all out here laughing, eating pizza, watching TV. We love entertaining and this space allows us to host big parties, as well as enjoy quiet, intimate moments. This is our place to just be.”
Nick’s journey into outdoor design began in 2003, after he left his corporate job to start Leaping Landscapes. “He hated wearing suits every day and the mundane office,”
says Bridget. “I told him to quit and start a lawn-care business if that’s what would make him happy.”
He ran his lawn care business successfully for five years before he sold it and began working in hardscapes. This is where he found his passion for designing and creating spaces that elevate people’s lives.
Twenty one years later, they moved from Michigan to Indiana. “We started coming to the Franklin area 20 years ago to visit family, and fell in love with the vibrant community,” says Nick. In 2015 the couple decided to make Franklin home and quickly integrated into the community.
“Franklin is such a charming town,” says Bridget. “We really have something special here.”
“I want clients to love the space so much they cry,” Nick adds with a smile. “When the customer loves what we create, it makes me happy. Many of my clients have become friends by the end of a project.”
Nick’s approach begins with a simple question to clients: “If money were no object, what would your dream space look like?” While not all features may be feasible immediately, Nick believes in phased projects to bring these dreams to life. The key to success is listening to his clients and what they truly want, whether that is a pool, a putting green, a space for children to play or expansive party areas.
Nick always starts a project walking the property with the client. He ensures he understands how the space will be used and what each family member enjoys. “My worst nightmare is creating a space that isn’t used,” he says.
Using a drone to capture aerial shots of the property and 3D technology, Nick shows on paper his vision for the project. Once a final design is agreed upon, the real fun begins. Nick utilizes a variety of styles, colors and materials in hardscaping. He leverages modern technology to create beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces. Projects typically take two to eight weeks, depending on size, and no project is too small.
Beyond mere aesthetics, Nick’s dedication to his craft extends to fostering lasting relationships with his clients. From initial consultations to the final touches, Nick and his trusted team of contractors navigate every step of each project with precision and care, so that the client’s vision is created and expectations are exceeded.
Reach out to schedule a consultation and embark on a journey to create your own slice of outdoor paradise.
For more information, call Nick Weir at 317-709-7720, or email nweir@ indypatioscapes.com. Follow PatioScapes on Facebook and Instagram.

Cruisin’ Franklin
Writer / John Wales Photography Provided
It started with my first Hot Wheels car, a lifelong addiction for which there seems to be no cure. Cars, car culture and anything automotive has been my passion, but not mine alone. Millions of people worldwide share my love for automobiles and the opportunities they have created for our livelihood.
As I grew older, my Hot Wheels changed to Revel models, and then it really began - 16 years old, a drivers license and my first car in 1986 - a black 1977 Pontiac Firebird my dad rebuilt for me. Of course it didn’t take long for me to drive my way into two speeding tickets, and dad promptly sold that beautiful car. After driving a Chevy Chevette to lessen my lead foot, I was eventually able to get back into the kind of cars I loved - fast, American muscle. Franklin was a big part of this, as downtown Franklin was the place to cruise on Friday and Saturday nights.
Back then I was known for two cars: a 1967 blue Plymouth Barracuda and a bright orange 1973 Chevy Vega with a 400
small-block engine. Eventually cruising the Johnson County Courthouse went out of favor with the city council, and cruising was halted. I remember my mother going to a council meeting to complain about the cruising ban, as she and so many other parents felt it was a safe alternative to their kids cruising the southside of Indianapolis.
Years passed and I went on to own dozens of different cars, trucks and motorcycles. Cruising and car shows became less and less of my summer routine, yet my hunger for my “hot wheels” never waned, and eventually I knew that cars were still my favorite toys, so as life allowed, I eased back into hot rods and cruising.
Fourteen years ago I was asked to take over the car cruise-ins for Discover Downtown Franklin and for the Franklin Parks and Recreation Department. We created a Facebook group called Cruising the Courthouse, and our little gathering of a dozen cars quickly grew to hundreds of cars, so much so that we routinely ran out
of space. Downtown Franklin is, to me, the most beautiful downtown in Indiana, and it looks even better when Main Street is lined with our beautiful classic cars and hot rods.
This year I decided to retire from running the cruise-ins and was fortunate to find a local car club, the Franklin Cruisers, to take over the shows for 2024 and beyond. This change gives me more time to enjoy my own hot rods and, as it turns out, to write this column. My favorite two cars have always been Barracudas and Vegas, so I came fullcircle all these decades later, as I once again own one of each. The Vega has been with me for a decade now and is well-known as the VooDoo Vega. This is no ordinary fourcylinder Vega from the Lordstown assembly plant in Ohio. It now sports a massive, supercharged big-block Chevy engine with dual carbs and nitrous. Underneath the car, the frame is highly modified and narrowed to fit massive steam-roller tires. The car is considered a pro street build, a custom car design that was huge in the 1980s and is now experiencing a resurgence, due to

Gen Xers who lusted after this style we saw on the pages of Hot Rod Magazine but couldn’t afford in our youth. The Vega was featured in the Summit Racing booth at the Indianapolis World of Wheels earlier this year, where it one first place in the Pro Street class.
This summer, with no car shows to run, I plan to spend a lot of time actually going to car shows to enjoy the time with my friends, and enjoy the beautiful cars and trucks of my car-cruising peers.
This monthly article will be used to share the hard work and dedication to the car craft by my fellow car enthusiasts. If you have a cool vehicle and a great story to share about it, I want to hear it and share it with our readers! Please send your contact information, a picture or two, and a little about your special ride, to amy@townepost. com, and maybe you will see your car in the pages of Franklin Magazine!
Until the next time…keep cruisin’.

ESTES BROTHERS PLUMBING HEATING COOLING
Writer / Katie Hosea Photography Provided
Zack Estes, the owner of Estes Brothers Plumbing Heating Cooling, began his business in January 2023. Since then he has dedicated his time to serving the community.
Quality work and care are crucial to his business model, whether he’s installing a tankless water heater, replacing a traditional water heater, checking an HVAC system, or replacing water or sewer lines. The business is licensed and insured with a home office in Simon Farms. Callers looking for help speak directly with Estes, who is there to help with projects big or small. He can even guide you over the phone on how to reduce damage and mitigate problems before his help arrives. He always prides his business on honesty.
“If we can’t get you the best solution, we’ll tell you right up front and advise the best plan of attack for your situation,” he says.
Estes is a family man and is celebrating his
15-year anniversary with his wife, Shalene. Shalene is a full-time nurse and they will soon be a family of four. Their daughter, Zahra, is patiently awaiting her baby brother’s arrival. “I can’t wait to pinch his little cheeks!” Zahra says.
Estes is also an avid Pacers fan who loves jazz music and has a great sense of humor. He loves serving the Franklin area and admires the beauty of the city. On a weekend, you may find him at Shale Creek Brewing enjoying a burger.
For many Franklin residents, a local review goes a long way. The company has all fivestar reviews on Google.
Working with Estes means supporting a family business with dreams of growth and giving back to others. As the owner, Estes hopes to grow his business, open a brickand-mortar office, and bring his brother into the business full time. He loves his work because it allows him to work with his hands and meet new people.
“I always got tired of working for bigger
companies, where sales training was more important than knowing what you’re actually doing,” Estes says.
Next time you’re in need of plumbing, heating or cooling expertise, give him a call. When the job is done and he’s earned another happy customer, be sure to leave a five-star review!

area restaurant community as an executive chef for 30 years. I was the executive chef for Iozzo’s Garden of Italy when they opened in 2009 and was with them for five years. I returned to Iozzo’s in April of 2023. During my intermission from Iozzo’s I spent three years in Sitka, Alaska, as the executive chef and food and beverage director of two hotel properties. When I returned home in 2016, I was the executive chef for Salt on Mass and then joined Second Helpings as the executive chef.
Enough about me - let’s talk about the Franklin food scene. It is going to be so fun sharing the stories of all the great food establishments in our community, getting to know the fun, dedicated and hard-working
teams that make celebrations memorable, and learning about the passion and love that goes into every bite that you take - and of course, eating the awesome food that is Franklin.
Let’s introduce Iozzo’s on Jefferson Street. The team there is excited to join this great community and help with all of your gatherings. Iozzo’s will provide an authentic menu and dining experience to the exciting culinary scene that is blooming in Franklin.

As longtime residents of Johnson County, Jess and Sandra Carrasquillo are continually inspired by all the positive growth in Franklin.
“We have watched Franklin grow over the
last several years, and yet it still remains all about community,” Jess says. “The current leadership in Franklin is amazing. We have lived in Johnson County for over 37 years. Sandra worked at the Johnson County Community Foundation for several years during its infancy and has watched it grow into the outstanding organization that it is today.”
Jess has many fond memories of hosting and attending events at the Active Adult Center, Johnson County United Way, Johnson County Senior Services, the Fairgrounds, and other great organizations in Johnson County.
Recently, Jess and Sandra attended the Franklin Magazine launch party at Garment Factory Events. They heard Amy Skirvin,
publisher of Franklin Magazine, share the story of Franklin’s rich history, and all the improvements that are happening in and around Franklin. At that point they knew they wanted to be involved. The Carrasquillos wanted to be part of this inaugural edition. Easy Street Insurance has advertised in Center Grove Magazine for years with positive results, from networking with other businesses to reaching a host of wonderful clients. For a business owner, the Towne Post Network publications are excellent community publications that have long-term impact.
Sandra and Jess started Easy Street Insurance in 1996. They specialize in Medicare products, and health and life insurance. Their team stays aware of upcoming changes and new products.

ceiling on Medicare prescription costs for Medicare beneficiaries. No one with a Medicare Part D plan will spend more than $2,000 on prescriptions in 2025. For the first time in Medicare’s history, the amount of money that beneficiaries in drug plans will have to pay for their prescriptions each year will be capped, according to the provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. “This is the biggest change that has happened since Part D plans came out in 2006,” Jess says.
Easy Street Insurance recommends that everyone who receives their medication through any Medicare plan review their options this fall. The annual election period is from October 15 through December 7, 2024, for a January 1, 2025, effective date. The insurance companies are going to make changes to their plans and it’s going to be in your best interest to review your coverage.
Enrolling in Medicare or changing your plan(s) can be an overwhelming task for some people, but it doesn’t have to be, especially when you have the right team on your side. The folks at Easy Street spend six to eight weeks each year certifying on a national level and with multiple insurance carriers. Sandra and Jess are steadfast in providing ongoing education and certifications to ensure their agents are the best in the industry. As a result, customers feel very comfortable at Easy Street Insurance because they get all their questions answered, and as their tagline says, “We make Medicare easy!”
No cost. No pressure. Just sound advice.
“We break it down in simple terms so that people can understand everything related to Medicare,” Sandra says. “Customer service is very important to us. We are truly here to help. When clients call, we have a
live person answering their questions. It is our passion and our mission to provide exceptional service to our clients. We become advocates for them. Our agents are truly outstanding and caring.”
“We love seniors,” Jess says. “It’s a ministry for us working with our clients. We know we have a huge responsibility. They are trusting us to help them make the right decision.”
