DANIEL S. MARTIN ORTHODONTICS
Writer / Amy Skirvin
Photography Provided
Franklin has had a local orthodontist since 2005.
Dr. Daniel S. Martin and Practice Manager Becky Hunter, originally from Franklin, recognized the growing town needed a local orthodontist. In 2005 they opened Daniel S. Martin Orthodontics, and started providing orthodontic care to patients out of the building that is currently owned by Dr. Adam Richardson.
Through the trust and referrals from many patients and dentists, Dr. Martin and his team had outgrown their original location. In 2010 Dr. Martin was able to provide a larger office to share with his patients and their families at 1000 West Jefferson Street. The office was built to be warm and inviting, and include all of the newest technology available. They even have a game center and a coffee bar!
This approach to orthodontic care has been very successful in Franklin.
In 2022 the practice welcomed a second Orthodontist, Dr. David Comstock. He has known Dr. Martin from his early days at Franklin College. His interest in orthodontics grew during that time because he was able to shadow Dr. Martin as part of his education. He knew orthodontics was his passion and he wanted to come back to his hometown to give care to the people in his community.
You will likely see Dr. Martin with his wife and four children at many of the local downtown events. Likewise, Dr. Comstock and his wife enjoy riding around town on their motorcycle or walking their two corgis.
Dr. Martin and Dr. Comstock have other similarities besides their patient approach. They are also both fans of Indiana University and the Indianapolis Colts. They enjoy joking with patients about the rivalry between IU and Purdue!
Patients of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment. Whether a patient is 7 or 97, they can expect to feel welcome at Daniel S. Martin Orthodontics. They will receive top-notch care that gives them the smile they have always wanted, and when they return to the office years later for a visit or bring in one of their kids for care, they will be shocked when the team at Daniel S. Martin Orthodontics remembers them by name.
Dr. Martin and his team are honest, caring and compassionate. While they take the orthodontic needs of their patients in Franklin very seriously, they make it a fun and enjoyable experience for kids and parents with lots of banter, jokes and even cool contests! When you walk into their beautiful office on West Jefferson Street, you are greeted by smiling, friendly individuals. The office always has decorations that complement current office contests.
The fun atmosphere isn’t the only thing that sets Daniel S. Martin Orthodontics apart. Dr. Martin’s approach to care is also unique to his field. “I believe that there are lifelong benefits to having a beautiful and healthy smile,” he says. “Using state-of-the-art technology, methodology and equipment, I can provide quality treatment to people of all ages. In my practice, I emphasize proper tooth and jaw development, avoiding extraction of teeth whenever possible to give patients the healthy, happy smiles they deserve.”
Patients and parents are never made to feel forced into a treatment or a high payment plan to fix an orthodontic issue. Dr. Martin makes getting orthodontic care at his office affordable and accessible, and Treatment Coordinator Haley Lane takes time with each patient and their parents to clearly communicate the suggested plan of care, as well as the payment plan. She ensures every question is answered and everyone feels comfortable before moving forward with treatment.
If you need orthodontic care including metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign or expanders, call Daniel S. Martin Orthodontics at 317736-0607 to schedule an appointment. For more information about the team and their services, visit www.martinorthosmiles.com. Be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
If you are already a patient of Dr. Martin or Dr. Comstock, be sure to enter the summer contest. All the details are on their Facebook page. Scan the QR code to enter the contest by sharing a video, or visit the office and fill out an entry. Good luck, and the team at Daniel S. Martin Orthodontics encourages you to keep smiling, Franklin!

REMARKABLE RESTORATION
LOCAL COUPLE BRINGS PERSONAL TOUCHES AND A LITTLE TLC TO HISTORIC HOME RENOVATION
Writer / John Wales Photographer / Christina Cochran
“Who would buy that?” was all James Biggerman could say as he stared at the blue tarp adorning the roof of the run-down house nestled on Jefferson Street. The structure wore what appeared to be decades of neglect, as did the lot it resided in.
Turns out, the answer to his question was he and his wife, Jessie. James saw the amount of work and money the house needed. However, Jessie saw the potential and envisioned the Queen Anne home returned to its majestic roots, so a deal was made and their grand adventure began.
Tracking the history of this stately home has been difficult, as the home wasn’t built in the traditional way. The earliest construction was the back of the home, while the front was built later, including the wraparound front porch so well-known for the architectural style. The home was certainly constructed in the late 1800s, but the records have been difficult to track down.
What is known, however, is that the house was built by attorney William Feathergill, who would later die peacefully in his sleep in the home as reported in the Franklin Evening Star on September 22, 1934. Not much else is known about the property until the Franklin Development Corporation took ownership from the city in 2018 and began the search for a new owner interested in preserving the home. Local contractor Jon Conner took on the task.
Conner found the house to be in horrible shape and worthy of demolition, yet the striking image of that wraparound front porch persuaded him to tackle the renovation. The oldest part of the home could not be saved and was torn down completely, and rebuilt in the same footprint and in the same structural styling. It was during this phase that Jessie saw the house and asked James to take a look at it. The home was not yet on the market as it was still uninhabitable.
James’ initial concerns about the condition were tamed by Jessie’s vision, and the quality of the workmanship Conner had
8 | June 2024 | TownePost.com
already brought to bear. The timing was perfect, they were able to strike a deal to purchase the home, and Conner agreed to finish the home in Jessie’s vision. This included sourcing period-correct materials to complete the new construction, to return the home to its original appearance. Beautiful hardwood flooring was used that perfectly matched the original area of the home, as modern laminate would just not do.
A butler’s pantry was recreated and interior doors had glass windows above them, allowing light to easily pass from room to room. The house is rumored to be the first home in Franklin to have electrical lighting installed.
While it was important to preserve the home to its original appearance, it was to be the Biggermans’ home, so it needed modern comforts as well. The kitchen was remodeled with all new appliances,
countertops and and island, but it still gives the vibe of a stately manor from the 1800s. The first floor has a parlor, living room and family room, making it a perfect place to entertain guests. The spacious master bedroom also occupies the first level of the home with a completely modern master bathroom attached. Up the grand hardwood staircase, additional bedrooms can be found, making it a four-bedroom, two-and-one-half-bath home.
Jessie is from an artistic family, and the walls of the home are adorned with paintings created by family members, including a watercolor painting by her mother. While she claims to have no training in interior decoration, the home she designed is inviting, as she used neutral colors on the walls - but colorful accents exist wherever you look.
Perhaps the most stunning feature is that gorgeous wraparound porch. Even when
TownePost.com | June 2024 | 9
the home was in shambles, that porch made the house stand out as special - not only beautiful, but spacious as well, and the Biggermans can often be found sitting on the porch smiling and waving to neighbors.
While initially hesitant, James is happy they took this journey. The quality restoration brought the home back to its original glory, and Jessie’s vision brought the house to life. The process wasn’t complete without a few bumps in the road, but in the end it was all worth it.
One such bump was the original carriage house. Unfortunately decades of rot made it impossible to repair. The Biggermans’ desire to preserve any usable materials meant taking the building down instead of bulldozing it. During this delicate process a beam was removed and the structure unexpectedly collapsed into the alley. Fortunately no workers were injured, but someone did call 911 about a building collapse downtown. The carriage house
is now replaced with a detached garage, built to complement the home nicely. The collapse has become a fun story to share with guests while touring the incredible landscaping and rear patio. Thanks to the work from Holeman Landscape and E&M Land Services, the entire property mirrors the beauty of the home.
James and Jessie’s determination to preserve this unique and beautiful home adds to the incredible transformation of the Franklin downtown. As visitors to our city enter on Jefferson Street from U.S. Highway 31, they will surely be welcomed downtown with a wave and smiles from the couple sitting on that incredible Franklin front porch.

THE BLESSED BUTTERFLY
Writer / Katie Hosea
Photographer / Emily Stewart
The doors to the Blessed Butterfly opened in February 2024 as a passion project full of girly, pink comfort by the owner, Brilynn York.
The Blessed Butterfly offers classic, hybrid, soft-volume and volume lash extensions and fills, as well as eyelash lifts and tints, eyebrow wax, lamination, eyebrow microblading, and lip waxing. Whether you are looking for a full-volume lash or a bit of tint, York has the service for you, with a goal of enhancing your natural beauty.
York began her lash and brow business as an ode to her daughter, Bethany, and her “butterfly kisses.” At a young age Bethany was diagnosed with autism, and her sweet butterfly kisses were her way of communicating with York. Following
Bethany’s diagnosis, and with a focus on her growing family with husband, Jeremy, York was looking for a way to get back into the beauty industry while also providing for her family. As her business grew, she wanted a name that supported that growth, which is how it expanded to the Blessed Butterfly.
Brilynn also has sons, Samuel, Daniel and Ezra. She states how important the support of others has been for her business. When talking of her husband, parents and nanny, she says “it takes a village to help with our children.” As new homeowners in the downtown area, the Yorks and their children are enjoying all that Franklin has to offer. They love to walk and explore downtown. On warm days her kids love to be on the splash pad at Young’s Creek Park and eat ice cream at Millie’s Ice Cream Co. on Jefferson Street.
York also emphasizes the importance of the support she has received from other women. When discussing the start of the Blessed Butterfly and what helped her through the daily challenges, she stresses the importance of “other women encouraging me to follow my dreams.”
Now when one of her clients comes into the studio feeling a little down, she gives them the encouragement they need. York wants everyone to get up from her chair feeling relaxed, confident and ready to take on whatever the rest of the day brings. York’s faith in God has also been a source of strength and comfort when something happens with her family or business. Her life motto is, “I will praise you anyways.”
When visiting York at The Blessed Butterfly, you’re not only getting an experienced, well-trained professional, you’re also getting a new friend who will make sure you leave totally satisfied. To book an appointment or ask a question about services, text York at 317-494-1483. STORM WARRIOR ROOFING
RESTORATION MAKES THINGS NEW AGAIN
Writer / Katie Hosea Photographer / Emily Stewart
Jared Helvie, an Indiana University Kelley School of Business alum with a dual major in business management and supply chain management and operations, loves the history and pride of Franklin. He started Storm Warrior Roofing & Restoration in 2021 during the height of COVID-19, with a plan to help his community in a big way.
Storm Warrior is a full-service exterior remodeling company that takes on a range of projects, from repairing gutters or updating exterior paint to installing new roofs. Franklin is Helvie’s hometown, but the company also serves Johnson County and a 100-mile radius from their office. Helvie and his team of nine employees specialize in repairing, replacing and restoring roofs, siding, gutters, windows and doors for their residential and commercial customers. They do many restoration projects following damaging storms, and are educated in working alongside insurance companies and homeowners.
For Storm Warrior, communication is a top value. Each customer has a company representative that oversees the project from start to finish. “They make sure to keep up with each and every customer they’re assigned to,” Helvie says.
Helvie, influenced by his grandfather’s projectdriven spirit and his parents’ generosity, has ingrained going above and beyond into the company culture. His father, a physician, spent summers in Haiti volunteering his time treating patients and performing surgeries for those in need during Helvie’s childhood. This give-back attitude trickled down to Helvie, who spent his high school summers building homes in Juarez, Mexico.
Helvie now prides his own business on giving back. “Any of my guys will drop what they’re doing to help somebody if they need it,” he says.
Within the same day, his team was out alongside the Red Cross and National Guard helping residents of Winchester following a tornado that destroyed over 40 structures and injured 38 people in March 2024. Sarah Bain, Storm Warrior’s office manager and Helvie’s partner, says Helvie’s urgency to help sets him apart from others. He and
his team even packed up a resident’s home that was destroyed and provided him with transportation from the hospital.
Storm Warrior is there to help customers through every step of their project. After an initial phone call, they typically have someone out within 24 hours to document and measure. They also provide an estimate within 24 to 48 hours.
When working with the company representative, software can be used to create a rendering of the project so customers can get
an idea of the work before restoration begins. Helvie and his team love being a part of the revitalization of Franklin.
Helvie and his team do many restoration projects funded by insurance companies, but they also work with customers via private pay, and financing options are available. With communication and customer support at the forefront of their business, a company representative will be there for each step, and having someone on-site to talk to is an important component of each project. Helvie also provides frequent check-ins with customers to ensure a positive experience.
As an employer, Helvie focuses on being family oriented. He is the bonus father of Bain’s three children. Their youngest, 11-yearold Ellie, loves pets, and after catching a snake, compromised with her parents to let it go if she could get a lizard. She now has a leopard gecko. Helvie is a motorcycle enthusiast, and in her infrequent free time, Bain loves to line dance, but if you ask them what they do in their free time, they’re usually chasing Elle around with all of her extracurricular activities. They love Enedina’s Taco Truck and Richard’s Brick Oven Pizza. They also volunteer their time, and Storm Warrior Roofing & Restoration is a sponsor of the Boys & Girls Club, Franklin football, and events in Hope, Indiana, where their children attend school.
Those looking for a supportive business that will help them through each step of the process can visit stormwarriorroof.com or call the office at 463-219-1703. The website includes info on services, pictures of past projects and details on available financing options.

THE GREAT LOOP
FRANKLIN RESIDENTS EMBARK ON THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME
Writer / Christina Cochran
Photography Provided
The Great Loop is a journey that many boaters dream of taking at some point in their lives. It is an adventure like no other, offering a unique opportunity to explore the diverse waterways of the eastern U.S. and part of Canada. Rob and Doris Morris, Franklin residents and owners of Sunny Lawn Farms, embarked on this epic voyage.
Their journey began on their boat, Livin’ Life, aka Liv, at Kentucky Dam Marina on the north end of Kentucky Lake in late September. From there, they navigated through a series of waterways including the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and the Great Lakes. They spent 45 days in Canada, and experienced the inland rivers and the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way they encountered a total of 141 locks, and traveled a total of 6,835 miles over the course of 391 days.
The trip was carefully planned to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. They aimed to reach the Gulf of Mexico after hurricane season, and followed a counterclockwise route to take advantage of the inland river current and seasonal weather patterns. This allowed them to travel through Florida and the Gulf during the winter months, and the Great Lakes in the summer.
When asked about what inspired them to take on this adventure, the
Morrises mentioned Rob’s previous experience working with boat builders and customers using Cummins engines. Over time the Great Loop had been added to their bucket list, and they decided to make it a reality by planning and working towards their goal.
Rob and Doris had always dreamed of embarking on a long boat trip, exploring new places and experiencing different adventures. When the opportunity finally presented itself, they eagerly set off on their one-plus year journey. Little did they know that they would encounter one particularly scary situation that would test their courage and resilience.
The couple left Atlantic City, New Jersey, on their way to New York City, a big travel day for them as it was a longer distance than they were used to. As they headed out into the open Atlantic Ocean, the weather forecast seemed favorable with gentle winds and small waves. However, as they sailed further the waves began to grow in size, with swells reaching 5 to 6 feet by late morning.
The boat was tossed around violently, with waves crashing over the bow. Rob and Doris found themselves on a nerve-wracking roller coaster ride that lasted for eight long hours. Everything in the boat was
18 | June 2024 | TownePost.com
thrown around, and the rough seas made it a challenging and frightening experience.
Despite the terrifying ordeal, the couple also had many incredible moments during their adventure. They visited charming towns, witnessed stunning scenery and interacted with friendly locals. The sight of dolphins swimming alongside their boat, stingrays, turtles, eagles and even alligators added to the magic of their journey.
As the couple continued their journey along the Gulf of Mexico, they encountered many more funny and memorable moments. One day as they were passing through a narrow channel, a group of dolphins decided to swim alongside their boat, jumping and playing in the wake. It was a memorable sight to behold.
Another time they stopped at a small marina to restock supplies. As they were walking along the dock, a pelican swooped down and stole a sandwich right out of a close friend’s hand. They couldn’t
help but laugh at the audacity of the bird as it flew away with its prize!
One evening they had anchored near a small island and decided to go for a swim. As they were splashing around in the water, a curious manatee popped its head up right next to them, causing them to squeal in delight. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be so close to such a sweet and gentle giant.
The couple also recalled when they set out on their journey from Carrabelle, Florida, towards Clearwater Beach. They found themselves in the company of a dozen other boats, all waiting for the perfect weather window to cross the Gulf of Mexico. When the foggy conditions finally lifted after two days of thick mist, they were thrilled to have the opportunity to experience the open waters without any land in sight.
With the fog behind them, they ventured further offshore, reveling
TownePost.com | June 2024 | 19
in the vast expanse of the Gulf surrounding them. The sun began to set, casting a mesmerizing glow over the horizon, while the night sky sparkled with the brilliance of countless stars. It was a moment of pure magic, and they decided to drop anchor and savor the tranquility of the moment.
Just as they were basking in the beauty of the night, a bright spotlight suddenly illuminated their boat, accompanied by the authoritative voice of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent, requesting permission to board. Startled but compliant, they welcomed the masked officials onto their vessel as officers conducted a routine check to ensure their safety and legitimacy in the open waters.
Despite the initial shock of the unexpected visit, they soon realized the importance of their presence in the Gulf, where smuggling and human trafficking are prevalent concerns. The officers were professional and courteous, putting the adventurers’ minds at ease and reminding them of the realities of the maritime world.
In the end, the funny moments and unexpected encounters were what made their trip truly unforgettable. The Great Loop may not be for the faint of heart, but for those willing to take on the challenge, the rewards are endless.

KEEPING OUT PESKY PESTS THIS SUMMER SEASON
Writer / Amy Skirvin
Photography Provided
During this time of year the world comes alive again, and that means one thing - BUGS!
the existing ants and then keep them out with a prevention plan.
IS THE TREATMENT SAFE FOR OUR KIDS AND PETS?
Kevin Burchett and Josh Lewis, owners of Irish Brothers Pest Control, are here to help us fight the critters wanting to take up residence in Franklin homes. We asked them questions to help homeowners keep the pests out this summer.
WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON PEST IN FRANKLIN?
Ants! They are the odorous house ants mostly, not carpenter ants.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO KEEP ANTS OUT OF OUR HOMES?
We use integrated pest management, which means we find out why they are there and we help you eliminate the source of the problem. Most pests are on your property because of too much moisture. We do a treatment to get rid of
Yes. We use it in our homes with our kids and pets. After the treatment is done, kids and pets will only need to be kept out of the area for 30 minutes.
HOW CAN WE KEEP FLEAS OFF OUR PETS?
Keeping your yard well-maintained and keeping the pet feces picked up will help a lot.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO KEEP MOSQUITOES AWAY?
Make sure you get rid of all stagnant water around your home. One area people forget is the water stuck in your gutters. Make sure to keep them clean to keep mosquitoes from multiplying.
HOW DO WE KEEP TERMITES FROM DESTROYING OUR HOMES?
Again, it is important to keep water directed away from your home. Termites love moisture, so be sure to shoot the water away from your foundation.
HOW CAN WE PREVENT BEDBUGS FROM GETTING INTO OUR HOMES?
Bedbugs are everywhere unfortunately, and they have nothing to do with a home being dirty. If you are out in public at a movie theater, have gone on vacation, or are anywhere you worry might have them, take off your clothing as soon as you get home and put it in the dryer on hot for at least 5 minutes. This will kill the bugs and eggs.
DO YOU TAKE CARE OF ANY CREATURES OTHER THAN INSECTS?

Cruisin’ Franklin
In 1964 Pontiac rolled out the GTO, designed by John DeLorean, and the muscle car was born. This era saw a focus on affordable, performance-oriented cars from American manufacturers, all of whom made significant contributions to the muscle-car legend.
The Chrysler Corporation, often referred to as Mopar, had several brands including Plymouth, which was first introduced in 1928 as a lowpriced competitor to Chevrolet and Ford. Plymouth gained a reputation of creating lowfrills automobiles that had style even at lower
price points. When Pontiac unveiled the GTO, the race was on among the Big Three (GM, Ford and Chrysler) and Plymouth emerged as a leader in performance engineering.
Muscle cars appealed to the youth of the ’60s, and Plymouth became a master of marketing to the Baby Boom generation. In 1968 they set the performance market on fire with the Plymouth Road Runner. They paid Warner Brothers $50,000 for the use of the name and likeness of their popular cartoon character, the Road Runner. The Road Runner character was
known for his speed and ability to evade Wile E. Coyote, and its namesake car lived up to that reputation.
While the Road Runner was built for performance with the big-block engine standard, it was sparse in creature comforts, offering basic vinyl seating and few options. One defining, standard feature of the car, however, was a costly one - its distinctive “beep beep” horn, modeled from the cartoon character. Plymouth spent $10,000 to develop the horn, which equates to about $90,000

in 2024 dollars. This single feature became iconic to car enthusiasts. The Road Runner quickly became one of the top-selling muscle cars of the day.
In 1970, the third year of the model, sales were still high, but they declined by a whopping 50% as insurance companies began adding surcharges to these high-powered beasts, so in 1971 the Road Runner was completely redesigned. It sported a more rounded body, deeply raked windshield and modern styling accents. The changes made the car more aerodynamic, but the engines (both small and big blocks) were slightly detuned to receive a standard insurance rating, and could now operate using regular gas instead of premium.
Franklin resident Steve McGeary has always loved the Plymouth Road Runner. In fact, he drove a 1971 model while in high school. Like most gear heads, McGeary has owned many cool cars and trucks in his lifetime, but he couldn’t get his high school ride out of
his head. He knew he had to own one again, so the search was on. He found this 1971 True Blue Iridescent (B5) Road Runner in Wisconsin and brought it home, where it can be seen cruising downtown Franklin and The Suds in Greenwood on nice summer weekends.
McGeary’s beauty sports the factory black strobe stripe over the roof, all-original Road Runner emblems, blue vinyl interior, and that distinctive “beep beep” horn. It retained its original 383 big block and remains virtually
stock with the exception of a wheel upgrade, now donning Mopar Magnum 500 chrome wheels on raised-white-letter tires.
Road Runners remain very popular at car shows, and McGeary won the People’s Choice award at the 2022 annual Cruisin’ the Amp car show in Franklin. Expect to see it at the 2024 show on June 7 at the Franklin amphitheater.
Until then…keep cruisin’.

ETHOS CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS
SUPPORT ARTISTS OF DIFFERENT STRIPES AT DAY-LONG EXTRAVAGANZA
Writer & Photographer / Taylor Tyndall
If you’ve ever walked around downtown Franklin, you’ve probably seen the whimsical mural featuring sloths in floral shirts, or the mural featuring raccoons paddling a canoe.
Once a year you can buy paintings from the artist who created those fun murals, as well as wacky lamps, beautiful blown glass and other amazing art from dozens of great artists, all in one spot.
Ethos Celebration of the Arts will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, on north Main Street in Franklin.
“I like Ethos because it gets people here and inspired, engages the community, and it’s a good opportunity to have people figure out how to get involved,” said Greg Potter, the creator of the humanlike animals that appear in downtown Franklin murals.
He and artist Gordon Strain painted a mural featuring sloths and other colorful animals on the side of Middle Davids Artisan Candles in 2017. In 2023 he transformed Kuji Alley with his art, including a bright-blue pond of smaller fish in the middle of the alley. Also in 2023, Potter adorned the side of the Pet Elves building with animals dressed up in a canoe saving other animals.
“There’s a lot of disagreement in this world, but everyone can agree that a raccoon should be painted as a pirate,” Potter said about his Pet Elves mural.
He said museums often provoke emotion, but not a chuckle, and he hopes to do both with his humorous and surrealist approach to his artwork.
Before moving to Franklin more than 10 years ago, Potter served in the military for more than 20 years, deployed to the Middle East

four different times. After his retirement, he pursued his love of art, attending painting classes at Franklin College, where he found his passion for painting and creating.
In addition to showcasing artists like Potter, Ethos Celebration of the Arts offers many chances throughout the weekend to celebrate art, starting with a battle of competitors creating art in 20 minutes right in front of you, during Canvas Clash on June 21.
On June 22, in addition to the juried art show and sale, people are invited to create chalk art on the street for the chance to win cash prizes. Generation Art and Frame will also have an art show and will have artist Luke Buck painting live. Ethos also features live music, vendors, arts programming, beer and wine, and other entertainment for the celebration of the arts.

FRANKLIN JEWELERS
SEARCHING FOR CHEESEBURGERS IN PARADISE DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN WITH OFFICIAL FOODIE KATHY JONES
Writer / Kathy Jones

Summer is on the horizon, and my search for food this month was inspired by one of my favorite artists and people, Jimmy Buffett. So we are trying the cheeseburgers in paradise, so to speak.
This was one of the best “crawls” that I have been on in a long time. Moving from restaurant to restaurant on a
beautiful early May day and seeing all the lunchtime activity in our community was awesome.
The first stop was Ann’s Restaurant. It was an early lunch rush there. Every table was packed by 11 a.m. Gill was our server, and a fantastic one. I asked him to bring me his favorite burger, the way that he enjoys eating it - Double Cheeseburger with shredded lettuce, tomato, pickle,
red onion and mayo. The burger was accompanied by fresh-cut potato chips and house-made ranch dressing. Wow, the burger was seasoned perfectly and was so fresh. The bun was cornmeal dusted, and held up great to the juicy burger. Everything was perfectly balanced and it was easy to tell that the ground beef was fresh and made in to patties daily in-house. Diana, the owner of Ann’s, confirmed this theory for me. It was fun

talking with Wilson and learning the history of this family restaurant.
Next stop on our crawl was the Willard. We grabbed a table outside. Dana Cutshaw was our server and we took her recommendation for the burger. A cold Summer Shandy cold draft was the perfect beverage for some great conversation while awaiting our food. The burger arrived with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, ketchup and mustard. It was a half-pound burger. The first bite did not disappoint. Fresh toppings and the bacon added awesome flavor to the perfectly medium-cooked burger. Crispy onion rings were a great side.
Off to the Grill Bar for the third burger of the day. We arrived around 1:15 p.m. or so and grabbed a booth. The place was packed and the vibe was awesome. Bonnie Daniels was tending bar and was also our server. Just like our first two stops, we asked Daniels to bring us her favorite burger. As we waited for our food, this seemed like

the place to be in Franklin on a Friday afternoon. Everyone knew everyone and there were lots of friendly smiles all around.
Our burger arrived and it was the deluxe with cheese, lettuce, onion, pickle and mayo. It was awesome - the perfect pub burger! I really enjoyed this sandwich, which was seasoned just right, juicy, a bit messy, and went perfect with an ice-cold beer. It is perfect for lunch, dinner and that late-evening fourth meal.
As Jimmy Buffet once said, “Fun is about as good a habit as there is,” and what a fun time we had on our burger journey. I had a blast learning about each restaurant, and the great people that pour the love into their jobs that keep the food coming and serve up great hospitality. The search for cheeseburgers in paradise was a success.

FOLKS OF FRANKLIN
Q&A WITH ASHLEY NEITZEL
Writer & Photographer / Christina Cochran
Where do you live in Franklin? I live in the downtown area.
Do you work in Franklin?
Yes, I am a bartender/manager at The Willard. I’ve worked there with some of the best people I’ve ever met for over a decade. I enjoy doing it and love having the company of our great patrons. I make really good martinis and love putting a twist on the classic cocktails. My current favorite thing to make and indulge in is a Blackberry Kentucky Mule. It’s made with muddled basil and lemon, Blackberry Crown Royal (if in stock) and ginger beer. It has a really nice, herbal feel to it. Another favorite is an Absolut Limeade. It’s made with Absolut Lime, lime juice, watermelon liqueur and soda water. At home I like to add a little fresh rosemary to it. It’s very refreshing.
What is your first memory of being in Franklin?
I was born here. As a child I always looked forward to summer break. I went to Kickapoo Kids Camp. At that time it was at the Boys & Girls Club. My friends and I were a little mischievous. We always had a good time walking to the pool and going on trips.
Where do you like to shop in Franklin and why?
Toodleydoo toys - there’s always something for all my kids there. They have a very polite staff. I really miss shopping at the record store. Hopefully, one day Franklin will acquire another one.
Where do you like to eat in Franklin, and what do you order?
I love the new menu at The Mint. They have a really good smash burger. I love their tequila Old Fashioned. 1823 Bakehouse has such an amazing variety of teas. I also love their quiche. Millie’s Ice Cream Co. has these delicious mini pancakes my kids love. Try the Honey Bear option! Last but not least, The Willard. The rib eye steak salad, breaded tenderloin, margherita pizza and chicken wings have always been gotos for me.
What is your favorite thing to do for fun in Franklin?
For family fun, we take advantage of the city’s great parks, especially the splash pad. The ideal date night would be to grab a cocktail and go see a movie on 35-millimeter film at The Artcraft.
What makes Franklin special to you?
Our community makes me happy to live here and to raise my four children.
