OXI FRESH
EASY ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND YOUR CARPETS Writer / Neil Lucas
After working for large companies for most of his life, Dave Morgan started looking for a new challenge: running his own business. Dave looked at several different franchise opportunities, including carpet cleaning, before choosing to be an Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning franchisee. In choosing Oxi Fresh, Dave saw it as the future of carpet cleaning with its uniquely portable equipment and its solid commitment to the environment. Oxi Fresh carpet cleaning is similar to nature and many of the laundry detergents available today that use oxygen as the principle source of cleaning. The Oxi Fresh carpet cleaning process begins with a light pre-spray of oxygenating cleansers and enzymes. After about 20 minutes, there’s another application of oxygenated cleaner along with a process that encapsulates the dirt. This is followed by the Oxy Clean
twin-cylindrical cleaning machine that has counter rotating brushes that reaches deep into the carpet pile to capture the dirt and debris. The brushes lift the dirt up and out of the floor, leaving the carpet clean and standing upright.
Commercial property managers also appreciate the fact that cleaning hoses don’t have to be snaked through hallways and elevators shafts.
Another major advantage of the Oxi Fresh carpet cleaning process is that it uses significantly less water. Where old steam One of the unique things about the Oxi Fresh cleaning process is that the equipment cleaning methods use 40-60 gallons of water, Oxi Fresh uses about two gallons. is completely portable. After the town hall meeting, approximately 20 residents organized a committee to lead the appeal process and communications.
ANGER OVER BILLBOARD LEADS TO APPEAL Writer / Tom Britt
The Fall Creek Road and 79th Street intersection has been the iconic gateway to Geist Reservoir for years. Now, our gateway has a 40-foot tall billboard on the south side of the CVS Pharmacy. Residents and businesses alike are upset.
At the end of the meeting, which was streamed live on GeistTV.com and is now available on demand, residents raised the $1,650 to file an appeal with the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals in Marion County. Bob Hittle, an Admirals
Sound resident, was named as the petitioner. A hearing was slated for April 1; however, due to that week being spring break for many local schools, a continuance will most likely push the hearing back to May 8.
“It’s a little disappointing how quickly an advertising billboard gets approved for the area and not a sidewalk which is actually needed,” said Josh McNair, a Feather Cove 1 resident and organizer of the “Boycott the Billboard at 79th and Fall Creek” Facebook page which had over 1,200 likes in the first few weeks. Area residents, looking for an explanation, turned to elected officials like Indianapolis City Councilor Ginny Cain. She fielded several phone calls and complaints, and in turn hosted a town hall meeting on February 13 and invited Jeff Roeder from the City of Indianapolis to field questions about the zoning process that allowed the billboard. In attendance were over 100 angry homeowners from nearby Feather Cove I, Preserves at Fall Creek, Masthead I and Fox Chase.
Watch the town hall meeting held on February 13, visit GeistTV.com. 10 / GEIST / MARCH 2014 / atGeist.com
“It’s an eyesore,” said Hittle. “If we don’t stop this one, what’s to keep them from putting billboards all around our neighborhood?” Even Indiana State Senator Jim Merritt expressed his displeasure with the billboard through a letter he sent to the land owner, Hide Realty Associates, LLC of West Hartford, CT. In that letter, Merritt cited an earlier attempt by developers at that same intersection. “We fought and killed the construction of a Shell gas station at the same location because it sits on a water aquifer and would serve to be an eyesore as well,” said Merritt. CVS officials are not happy with the billboard, either. In a phone interview with Mike Murphy, District Manager of CVS in Indianapolis, he expressed that CVS is just as upset as the residents are that their landlord erected this billboard. Their corporate attorneys are working through the lease agreement to come to an amicable resolution.
“We want it gone, too,” said Murphy. He encouraged residents to call the CVS Customer Service line (1-800-SHOP-CVS) and lodge their complaints. Even though they are not responsible, their attorneys can use the calls as leverage with Hide Realty Associates, LLC. Jeffrey Lee, the owner of the billboard, is actively trying to sell the rotating advertising space. In the meantime, the yellow and black “Advertise Here” sign looms over the busy intersection, poking each resident in the eye that drives by every day as they go to and from the Geist area. As this continues to develop, follow the Facebook page or atGeist.com for more updates.

“If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don’t care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, in my book we’re gonna be winners.”
—Coach Norman Dale, “Hoosiers” (‘86)
L
awrence North boys basketball coach Jack Keefer is probably more Norman Dale than Vince Lombardi – you know, a “play the game the right way” kind of guy. But, winning also has its merits. Keefer recently notched his 700th varsity basketball win, and is currently sixth on Indiana’s all-time winningest coaches list. “He’s had a dynasty here,” marveled former Wildcat and Keefer protégé Eric Montross, who recently attended an LN reception honoring the coach’s long, successful career. “700 victories is an incredible milestone – it’s just remarkable.” Equally remarkable – and widely acknowledged – is the top-notch quality of play on the courts of Lawrence Township’s three high schools (LC, LN and Cathedral.) LC boasts four former boys Indiana All-Stars, and one girls All-Star. The late “Stormin’ Norman” Sloan played for Lawrence Central, was an Indiana All-Star, played at North Carolina State University, and was a successful college coach for 38 seasons including stints with Florida and NC State. LN’s Montross, Mike Conley and Greg Oden played major college basketball and in the NBA. iHigh.com reports that 12 LN players have been named to the Indiana AllStar team, including one Mr. Basketball. Three have been McDonald’s All-Americans, and 74 have played college basketball. Keefer points to a culture of hoops excellence that traces its roots to middle, even elementary schools. “We’ve got a great feeder system here. Lawrence Township is as big as Washington Township, and they only have one high school. But, we split our players,” Keefer noted. “Then you find a Montross. Well gee whiz, there’s four years of good basketball.” It also helps when you have legendary players as role models. “Oden, Connelly – the younger kids work very hard to be like them. It rubs off,” added Keefer, who has been LN’s coach for 38 seasons. While the vast majority of the township’s hardwood elite won’t make it to the pros, many do move on to play for top-flight college programs. “Those high schools are basketball factories – LN in particular. It’s a tribute to the coaches,” said Rick Bolus, who maintains the
High Potential Recruiting Service, a ranking of the nation’s best high school basketball prospects. Two current Lawrence Township cagers hold lofty positions on Bolus’ High Potential list: Lawrence North senior Daeshon Francis and Lawrence Central sophomore Kyle Guy. Four others merited a mention: Terell Davis, a 6-5 senior, Lawrence North; Antoyne Jackson, a 6-4 sophomore, Lawrence Central; Colin Barthel, a 6-7 senior, Cathedral High School; and Justin Baker, a 5-9 senior also at Cathedral. Francis is a 6-3 shooting guard who has accepted a scholarship to play for University of Wisconsin-Green Bay beginning next season. “He’s a very athletic player with the ability to score and defend, and who’s had good coaching,” said Bolus in a recent telephone interview. “I always knew that LN produced great players who went on and played at the next level,” Daeshon said. “Coach Keefer has helped me get to where I wanted to go.” Guy is an up and coming 6-2 combo guard who’s had early interest from IU, Purdue, Butler, UCLA, Ohio State, and Michigan among other blue-chip programs. “He’s already showing signs of being a D-1 player. It’s just a matter of what level. Let’s see where he is as a senior,” offered Bolus. “He’s just a good all around guard; very versatile; a good shooter.” Like Daeshon, Kyle is keenly aware of the township’s hardwood legacy. “There’s always great talent coming out of both high schools. I assume that after Daeshon and I are gone, many more players will be coming through,” he said. 14 / GEIST / MARCH 2014 / atGeist.com
Bolus ranks Indianapolis among the nation’s top five cities for high school basketball talent (Chicago ranks first because of the sheer number of schools there.) “I see basketball coast to coast, and the top state for coaching is Indiana,” Bolus said. “Indiana coaches work harder on the fundamentals. In a lot of states, schools are just happy to have a coach. In Indiana it is a different story. You gotta win,” Bolus added. Our Hoosier sensibility, however, prefers that the winning be done the right way. And Montross said look no further than Coach Keefer. “He instilled hard work in all of us, and an expectation of excellence,” said Montross, now retired after eight seasons in the NBA. “He let us know that if we were given the tools, we were expected to use them to the best of our ability. He pushed us the right way – to be better, and to learn, and to be good teammates. All of us really valued the time and instruction we had with Jack.” Keefer’s reputation as a coaching guru extends well beyond the Indiana border. “I can’t go anywhere without somebody calling me coach,” Keefer said. “They know we’re here. I had some guy in Wisconsin call who said, ‘we may be moving to Indianapolis. You coached Mike Connelly, didn’t you? I might want to bring my boy by.’” With Keefer having stalked court sidelines for 41 years, one might conclude that the wily Wildcat has had enough. One would be wrong. “I could be in Florida suckin’ some lemonade right now, but it’s fun,” said a smiling Keefer. “My son, Jake, is only a sophomore, and I wanted him to experience some of this.” Keefer, for now, is king of Lawrence Township basketball. But it’s a reasonable assumption that when coach Jack is finally sipping his Florida lemonade, the township’s hard-earned hardwood excellence will continue with a new breed of coach, player and fan.
Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing. —Vince Lombardi

“It feels pretty good,” says George Hill with a smile when asked how he feels as the announcer at the Pacers’ game refers to him as “our hometown hero, George Hill!” He should feel good and he is a hometown hero! Hill grew up in Broad Ripple, attended Broad Ripple High School where he was a standout player, then went on to play for IUPUI. Except for a brief time with the San Antonio Spurs (2008-2011), Hill spent his career in central Indiana — rare for an NBA player to stay in his hometown. Hill always wanted to stay near his ailing great-grandfather, who died shortly after Hill verbally agreed to attend IUPUI. He knew he could move on, but his greatgrandfather had always taught him to be a man of his word, and Hill stayed and went on to have a great career at IUPUI. I met up with Hill just days after he had the best game of his NBA career — scoring a career-high 37 points against the Portland Trail Blazers. Although on top of his game, so to speak, Hill is a humble guy and thankful for how far he has come from being the young boy growing up in Broad Ripple looking up to players such as Michael Jordan. “I didn’t have a lot growing up,” says Hill. I had obstacles to overcome, but I made it.” “I just feel blessed.” He was a determined boy, though, as Co-Athletic Director Jim Sherrill of St. Richard’s Episcopal School will tell you. “I would see this little boy hop the fence and shoot hoops here at St. Richard’s,” says Sherrill. “Who would have thought he would go on to be a Pacer? I knew he would be successful, but not to this level!” Today Hill has a home on the water in Geist, with his girlfriend, Samantha Garcia, and his two dogs — goldendoodles named Brodie and Bailey. He loves fishing, boating, listening to music, watching movies and the occasional glass of wine — moscato or Riesling. His dream vacation? “I want to go to Bora Bora and stay in those little gazebos out in the ocean,” laughs Hill. Hill’s fellow teammates and buddies Paul George and Luis Scola live nearby, and they are already planning some summer get-togethers on the lake. And speaking of summer, Hill will tell you he much prefers warm weather over cold. He doesn’t mind sleeping in a cool room at night, but that’s it! Talking about cold also reminds Hill of when he had to jump in the cold Geist lake to save his buddy Paul George’s dog! “The dog tried to jump on my boat but missed — I saw him, so I knew I had to go in,” laughs Hill, who says he’s still mad at his buddy George for that one. On this particular game day, Hill takes me through his typical game day routine: a couple strawberry-banana smoothies, some Boston Market chicken and maybe a nap if he’s lucky! atGeist.com / MARCH 2014 / GEIST / 23
As we were wrapping up our conversation and taking pictures, my 19-year-old daughter, Nicolette, a budding journalist, yells, “By the way George, your girlfriend is beautiful!” While some chuckled, Hill thought for a moment and then politely answered, “Why, thank you. We are very happy. I think she’s the one.”
Did my daughter just get a scoop? Could that trip to Bora Bora be a honeymoon? Well, nobody knows for sure, but we do know that we all hope that that our hometown hero, George Hill, sticks around on the court and near his home for seasons to come!

“ GARRISON HAD REVEALED TO THE JURY A MIKE TYSON WITHOUT HIS CELEBRITY STATUS, A MAN CAPABLE OF DOING WHAT WASHINGTON SAID HE DID.”
S
ometimes that life-changing event doesn’t happen because you said “yes.”
For Geist attorney-turned-radio-host Greg Garrison, it came because he didn’t say “no” quickly enough. When Marion County prosecutor Jeff Modisett approached him about acting as a special prosecutor in the rape charges against boxer Mike Tyson, Garrison said he’d do it “when donkeys fly.” Modisett took that as a “yes.” Before long, Garrison found himself immersed in a case he knew had potential to turn “very silly, very fast.” Tyson, then 25 and a former heavyweight champion, had been indicted on sexual assault and three other criminal charges. The allegations stemmed from events during the Indiana Black Expo and Miss Black America pageant in July 1991. Desiree Washington was Miss Black Rhode Island. She’d gone out with Tyson on July 19 — she’d thought they were going to a party, but then his limousine took her to his room at the Canterbury Hotel. Tyson claimed they’d had consensual sex. Washington said she’d been raped. The trial began in January and lasted for two weeks. There were experts, including a reproductive specialist who testified that Washington’s injuries were inconsistent with consensual intercourse. There were dozens of witnesses scattered across the country — most of the Miss Black America contestants were there during the rehearsal when Tyson met Washington. There were long hours and long weeks. “I lost weight, I lost sleep, I got sick,” Garrison said. At one point, a doctor examined Garrison’s eardrum hemorrhage in his cousin’s kitchen, getting the attorney well enough to begin the trial.
atGeist.com / MARCH 2014 / GEIST / 29
Ultimately, though, a lot of it came down to Washington, a slender, delicate woman whose testimony had “the kind of credibility that goes with telling the truth,” and Tyson, who blew up on the witness stand as Garrison questioned him.
“ YOU GOTTA BE THERE WHEN THE LIGHT GOES RED”
“Once we got him to show his backside,” the cross-examination ended quickly. Garrison had revealed to the jury a Mike Tyson without his celebrity status, a man capable of doing what Washington said he did. Ten hours after both sides rested their cases, the attorneys were notified that the jury had reached a verdict. When he arrived at the courtroom, Garrison found only Tyson there. As the boxer sat 30 feet away, he made eye contact with Garrison. Garrison got the sense that Tyson knew it was going to be a guilty verdict. It was. Tyson later was sentenced to six years in prison. He was released after three. The trial, and the ensuing vortex of interviews, launched Garrison’s second career. Two years after the Tyson verdict, when O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife was found brutally slain, the networks began calling him for interviews.

Following the conviction of Mike Tyson, Garrison and his colleagues received hundreds of congratulatory letters, telegrams, cards and notes.

It eventually led to a regular hour-long Friday show during Simpson’s trials, as well as morning updates the rest of the week. Garrison often recorded these from his bed. “I just didn’t want to get up that early,” he said, adding that his kids referred to them as his “tighty-whitey” interviews. Through Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVey’s trial and President Bill Clinton’s legal entanglements stemming from the scandal involving former intern Monica Lewinsky, Garrison remained a broadcasting fixture, eventually signing a contract with CBS. TAX PREP PITFALLS Writer / Debra Legg Photographer / Carly Lyon
From missed deductions to deducting the same thing twice, the course between now and the April income tax filing deadline of April 15 can be tricky to navigate. What are some of the most common pitfalls? Kim Walker, a certified public accountant and individual tax manager with Long & Associates in Fishers, talks about problems and mistakes she often sees people make when handling their own taxes.
TAKING MONEY OUT OF RETIREMENT FUNDS
MINORS AND FILING
Under federal law, people who made less than $6,100 last year — that’s the standard deduction for a single taxpayer for 2013 — don’t have to file. Most teens with summer jobs easily fall under that threshold. However, Indiana and many other states require everyone for whom taxes were withheld to file returns. Most teens should look forward to this — they’ll likely get refunds.
Where this gets complicated is only one filer — either the parent or the child — It’s nice to have the cash, but that infusion can claim the minor’s personal exemption. comes at a cost that begins with a 10 percent Walker says it’s a good idea to have the same Internal Revenue Service penalty. Next, the preparer do both returns. “I’ve amended a entire sum is taxable income. “People don’t lot of parents’ returns over the year for this realize that they can lose about 50 percent of problem.” the money,” she said.
CONFUSING TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT ASSIGNMENTS
Workers who are employed out of town temporarily can deduct expenses such as lodging and meals. The caveat: The assignment has to be short term. “You can’t do this if it’s for more than a year,” Walker said.
DOUBLING UP ON EXPENSES
Walker sees this most often with clients who use at-home tax-preparation software. Because of the way the programs ask questions, it’s easy to make mistakes. For example, TurboTax asks about health insurance payments in the section about self-employment and small businesses, then again when addressing itemized deductions. Entering the amounts in both places will land taxpayers in trouble, Walker said.

MISSED DEDUCTIONS
woman called Walker with concerns about her son’s 529 college plan withdrawals after a commercial program repeatedly seemed to point her in an illogical, possibly illegal, direction. “For $75, I will do your son’s return,” Walker told her. “Bring it in.”
Others are aware of deductions, such as those for operating a home office, but avoid them out of fear of an audit.
Tax law today is very complicated and difficult for most people to keep track of without professional help. “Unless all you have is a W-2, you’re probably going to miss out on something,” she said.
Many small-business owners don’t realize that expenses such as cell phones and home Internet service are legitimate deductions, Walker said.
Audits happen, said Walker, who emerged free and clear from an audit after her husband’s home office drew IRS interest. “People are getting audited all the time, but a lot of them are cleared.”

MISTAKES ABOUT LEGAL EXPENSES
This is another area where taxpayers often miss deductions, though it, too, is tricky. In general, legal expense due to divorce is not deductible. It might be, though, if part of it can be attributed to settling tax matters, Walker said.
RELYING ON TAX PREPARATION SOFTWARE
(317) 281-2149
Walker is not a fan of do-it-yourself tax software. “The way it asks the questions can be very confusing,” she said. One

ALL IN A DOG’S DAY OF WORK
THERAPETS OF INDIANA OFFERS COMFORT, COMPANIONSHIP AT AREA HOSPITALS Writer / Laura Isaacs
For some, working like a dog isn’t a bad thing at all. Just ask Darlene Gosnell of Fishers. She’ll tell you that working dogs can save lives. Gosnell is the executive director of TheraPets of Indiana, a nonprofit corporation that provides animal-assisted therapies to patients in all kinds of medical facilities. She’s a firm believer in the power of pets, and she’s seen a number of medical miracles in person. In fact, Gosnell gets to cuddle up with one little miracle each night — her 13-year-old cairn terrier named Molly. Gosnell, a former special education teacher, was forced to retire in 2000 after a tragic car accident. She suffered a number of traumas in the wreck, including a traumatic brain injury. During her rehabilitation, a neuropsychologist suggested a pet. Gosnell followed the doctor’s orders, and that’s when she brought home the 4-month-old pup. Molly then became an integral part of Gosnell’s recovery process. The pup’s companionship was therapeutic. Molly kept Gosnell moving, guided her and reminded her when to take her medication. “My doctors saw how Molly has helped me,” Gosnell said. “So they asked me to bring her to help others.”
And that’s how TheraPets of Indiana was formed. Under Gosnell’s lead, TheraPets has grown to include a “staff ” of 26 dogs — all cairn terriers and West Highland white terriers — and a network of volunteers all dedicated to helping people get better. TheraPets works almost exclusively with St. Vincent Health and provides therapy in all kinds of health care facilities, from emergency rooms to hospice care. “Our dogs are trained to provide assistance in therapy in all kinds of situations,” Gosnell said. “Each dog has a specialty.” That means that some dogs, like Molly, are trained to help those in intensive care situations. Others are trained to specialize in disaster response and psychiatric care, to interact with Alzheimer’s patients, and much more. Gosnell said that a few dogs are even specially trained to help with bereavement. “We don’t want anyone to die alone,” Gosnell said. A handful of TheraPets dogs and handlers are trained to offer care and companionship to those in hospice care. That’s what McIntosh, a 21-pound cairn who goes by his nickname Big Mac, does best. Gosnell said that Big Mac is content to stay with someone until the end, just letting the patient feel his heartbeat and providing comfort. Families have even requested that Big Mac and other therapy dogs stay with 34 / GEIST / MARCH 2014 / atGeist.com
their loved ones through the funeral and viewing. Molly and Big Mac are part of the original six TheraPets dogs, who were purchased from breeders. Since then, though, Gosnell and her volunteers have focused on rescuing and rehabilitating dogs before training them to become therapy pets. She now works with breed-specific rescue groups to save potential therapy dogs who might have been abandoned, abused or unwanted and have ended up in shelters across the country. Through their rescue work, Gosnell and TheraPets volunteers have helped a dog who lost an eye from a blunt-force trauma see her true purpose as a healer and even helped a three-legged dog learn to navigate the halls of a hospital. For the most part, though, Gosnell said she prefers to work with young dogs under 6 months of age. The training process begins right away and can be intense, including both obedience training and “paws on” work with a mentor dog in a hospital setting. And though the process can be taxing, it’s all worth it. Gosnell has seen hundreds of success stories over the years, but she said the most touching tale is that of a then-14year-old cheerleader from Carmel named Jessica. Gosnell said Jessica and her family have given permission to share their story.

“Jessica had been in a coma for almost five weeks and was in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit,” Gosnell said. “She had a serious respiratory illness and had even stopped breathing a few times. I took Molly in to see her and gave her the command to ‘stimulate.’ Molly began licking the left side of Jessica’s body, and all of a sudden, Jessica opened her eyes and smiled. That was in 2004. Since then, Jessica has fully recovered. She recently finished a master’s degree at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and is still a volunteer with TheraPets.” For more information about TheraPets of Indiana, including donations and volunteer information, Gosnell can be reached at therapets@sbcglobal.net or 317-417-0257.

NEW PIRO FOOTWEAR GIVEAWAY HELPS AMERICANS IN POVERTY Writer / Kurt D. Moore
Footwear designer PIRO has stepped forward to help the less fortunate by launching a footwear giveaway program. PIRO, a brand of fashion-forward footwear for women and men, committed in January to donate at least 10,000 pairs of shoes to Americans in need. Its Heart, Arts and Soles program relies on artists, athletes, celebrities and public figures to create one-of-a-kind designs that will be placed on high-quality T-shirts. It has announced its first partner, painter Nekoda Witsken. The tees will be sold online at pirohas.com. PIRO will donate a pair of shoes for U.S. residents living in poverty for each shirt sold. “The opportunity to give back to the community just makes sense to us and we are excited to roll out the HAS program,” said Peter Asquini, PIRO’s chief executive officer. “We see lots of press for those in need abroad but felt it critical to address those in crisis here in the U.S. first. Our goal to give a minimum of 10,000 pairs of shoes represents our desire to help those less fortunate.” Witsken, 21, is a modern painter born in Fishers, Ind. She’s passionate about color and hopes her vibrant palette will facilitate community outreach and spread love for all types of art. “The design was intended to reflect a universal truth that love doesn’t see in black and white, but sees the colors of your soul, which I hoped to capture in my work,” Witsken said. “The message connects with the Heart, Arts and Soles mission because you are spreading love to children nationwide regardless of who they are or what neighborhood they come from.”
PIRO, a Fishers-based footwear company, partnered with Nekoda Witsken, a 21 yearold painter also from Fishers, to create the “Heart, Arts and Soles” program. Their goal is to donate 10,000 pairs of shoes to American children in 2014.
Witsken attends Purdue University and plans to graduate with an honors history degree, an entrepreneurship and innovations certificate, and a concentration in fine arts. She plans to become a larger part of the business and artistic communities. “We are so pleased and honored to have our first design created by someone as talented and giving as Nekoda,” said Asquini. “She 38 / GEIST / MARCH 2014 / atGeist.com
truly embodies the spirit of the HAS program and we are inspired by her as a person and by her talent as an artist.” PIRO specializes in dress casual footwear and fashion sneakers. PIRO footwear uses support and comfort technology pulled from the company’s roots as a lightweight fitness brand. It combines these features with fashion to create unique and interesting footwear.
Nekoda Witsken’s public mural was selected in November 2013 for the 116th Street pocket park in downtown Fishers.

CHEF SUZANNE A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Writer / Janet C. Striebel
Chef Suzanne Rockwell is gaining renowned attention throughout Indianapolis, and she continues to grow her business. After catering for many families and corporations across Indianapolis, including famous artists and musicians at the Palladium in Carmel, she and her team are celebrating the grand opening of a new facility in the Fishers/ Geist area that will offer extensive catering, a private chef division and cooking classes for all ages. This brand new setting exudes a fresh, colorful, airy feeling and is located at 9623 Windermere Blvd., next to Beautopia Spa and Dowden Family Dentistry. “First and foremost, we are a catering kitchen,” says Suzanne Rockwell, owner and head chef of Chef Suzanne. “We’re a 95 percent scratch kitchen, which means we do all the work here. Our meal selections are never frozen, only fresh, coming straight from our kitchen, not from a can.” Chef Suzanne offers personalized catering for inbound and outbound exquisite meals that can be tailored to your individual taste, budget and style. Although this newly built facility is not an actual restaurant, it will, however, offer space to host a vast array of memorable events, such as rehearsal dinners, wedding and baby showers, corporate team-building events, club events, sport banquets, birthday parties and anniversary parties.
PRIVATE CHEF WILL FLEX FOR PERSONAL SCHEDULE AND DIETARY GUIDELINES Rockwell and her team create delicious meals at your convenience for delivery or pickup. Families can set up schedules without worrying about contracts. Plus they can start and stop at any time. MOVIN’ ON UP WITH INCREDIBLE TASTE
She may be enjoying a satisfying taste of success right now, but life for Rockwell wasn’t always so glamorous. Back in 2010, Rockwell was the general manager and executive chef at the Fox Pub & Grill when suddenly its doors closed. Recognizing that the profit margins were higher in catering versus operating a restaurant, Rockwell realized she could start her own catering business. So with the help of her fellow coworkers, she launched her catering debut at the Sterrett Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison. As the staff outgrew the kitchen, it moved to the Indian Lake Golf Club in 2012. After a year, she finally realized this wasn’t a good fit with the demands of the bureaucracy. As a result, she moved to Geist Christian Church in 2013 where she was welcomed with a kind, respectful staff. Now almost six months later, she is ready to cook and cater from her very own kitchen.
THIS IS SO REWARDING BECAUSE AFTER ALL THE HARD WORK, MOVES AND HOURS OF WORRIES, WE ARE FINALLY HOME.” “The greatest thing about our team of chefs, director of sales Jan Schmalbach and bookkeeper Brooke Reeser is that we all have a lot of fun together,” says Rockwell, who admits that her achievement is a team effort. “We work very, very hard, but we never forget to laugh with and at each other. The company would not exist without their combined talents.”
vShe graduated from Ohio State University with a business degree and enjoys giving back to the community whenever possible. In looking back on her stepping stones to success, she says, “This is so rewarding because after all the hard work, moves and hours of worries, we are finally home.”
Rockwell lives in Geist and is married to her husband, Duane. Together they have four grown children and five grandchildren.
Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She has been writing for atGeist.com for more than seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

GIRLS ABOUT TOWN GET AN ICE FISHING PRIMER
Girls About ToWn Follow us to see where we’re @ - Rachel Q. & Chalene B. -
Writers / Rachel Quade and Chalene Braun
OK. You’ve driven over the Fall Creek bridge. You’ve seen these guys. They’re the ones out celebrating the winter of our discontent. Day after day, and week after week, they are enjoying themselves. They are the few, the brave, the adventurous ice fishermen. Today your Girls About Town decided to bundle up in their Carhart jackets and bibs (OK, downy ski jackets and fluff mama boots) to see where it’s at on Geist Reservoir! Apparently this is a very popular angling activity, and these diehard fisherman are having a banner year. To those who have never tried it, like us, LOL, ice fishing can seem a little strange to the summer lovin’ folks of Geist, but for many, ice fishing is the best and only kind of fishing. After talking with these “cool” fishermen, we kinda’ agree! Once winter and cabin fever have officially set in, that would be a good time to get out on Geist and test the waters — ice. You’ll need at least 4 inches of solid ice before you begin your outdoor adventure, and you don’t need a boat to get just about anywhere on the lake. Make sure the ice really is safe enough for you to be on it. Typically the first guy on the ice is the first guy to fall through! OK, it’s probably not a bad idea to wear a life jacket on your first ice fishing trip! So, on this cold wintry Sunday afternoon, we decided to venture out on the ice and see who we could find. We didn’t have to look far — ice fishermen were everywhere. The first folks we came upon were actually hanging out under the covered docks at Geist Marina. Young Clayton Dockins, a seventh-grader from Indianapolis, looks
forward to fishing with his uncle, Jeff Dockins, every chance he gets. They’ve been fishing together for years and love it! In fact, these two only ice fish. There’s no other kind of fishing to them. Today, they reeled in a sizable amount of bluegills. Clayton was pretty proud of his catch and entertained us with how their day of fishing had gone. Both packed their own thermos of coffee, snacks, ice-fishing poles, bait and augers and trekked themselves out on the snow-covered lake using a homemade wooden contraption on sleigh runners that served as both seating and a carryall for their supplies. These experienced fishermen even had a propane lantern that served as a hand warmer. Two bags of fish and a couple of hours later they were ready to get back home and scale and fry up their fish. A short walk away we found a large blue ice shelter with a couple other fishermen. James Allen and his uncle, Ron Cochran, were fishing inside a very cozy ice shanty! Allen and Cochran are quite the experienced ice fishermen, having fished for 25-plus years each on everything from the Great Lakes to State Park 46 / GEIST / MARCH 2014 / atGeist.com
lakes like Eagle Creek and Summit Lake State Park, and today, Geist Lake. These gentlemen were well-prepared for a long day of fishing and were happy to share their tips on ice fishing. After drilling multiple holes to test the ice depth, they made their way out on the lake. Next they drilled more holes and used their Vexilar fish scout to find where the fish were gathering before setting up their shelter. These sonar units not only show the depth, they reveal if there are fish under your hole, and they show how those fish are reacting to your bait. We can certainly see why depth finders are very, very important to a successful day! These guys were well-prepared for a long day of fishing. Luckily they invited us in

the shelter and showed us a day in the life of an ice fisherman! We sat inside and chatted about the catches they’ve had, including crappie, bluegills, catfish and even wide-mouthed bass. Pretty soon we, too, were caught up in the chance to breathe in the crisp winter air in the not-so-uncomfortable shelter with its propane heater and clear the ice from the holes with the ice scoop and fish! Using mealworms as bait and a 32-inch ice-fishing rod, these guys were reeling in the fish and having a great day out on the ice. You’ve got to put some pretty significant holes in the ice. Our new friends told us 8-inch holes are the perfect size. Considering as much ice fishing as they do, they make use of a power auger to make quick and easy holes. Others, like the Dockins, prefer to keep things quiet and use a hand auger. Thanks to Allen for the power auger demo. That thing sure cut through the 13 inches of ice out on Geist quickly! We were tempted to give it a try, but the guys looked so manly with their power augers that we didn’t want to show up these burly fishermen! There’s no need to stay inside during these long winter months, waiting for the sun to come out, dreaming of open water and summer fun. Be adventurous! Bundle up, get outside and try ice fishing. You just might make some new friends and learn a new skill! P.S. You must carry your license with you when you’re fishing, summer or winter. Cheers, and catch you later!

VALERIE PILLOW VINTAGE ELEMENTS IN VOGUE Writer / Kara Reibel
Assemblage is a newer term for art, but one that is rapidly gaining popularity. Combining vintage pieces with the new, and adding years of creative exploration as well as a wicked attention to detail, and you have the new work of Valerie Pillow. “Her pieces are like shabby chic on crack!” says a client of Pillow’s. That statement is a rather accurate assessment. The pieces, however unique and timeless, present an homage to vintage artifacts with a fresh perspective. With patina elements, shimmer, rusticity, mixed textures and soft color palettes, it’s amazing when the eye realizes you are looking at materials that used to be something else entirely. A self-proclaimed “MacGyver Girl,” Pillow’s resourcefulness clearly surpasses anything that MacGyver would have possibly had to envision. Pillow’s art is whimsical and graceful. Her ability to see the beauty and possibility in a piece of a salvaged watering can is (pardon the pun) uncanny. Creativity knows no limits, and this is evident in Pillow’s workshops. She recently moved back to Indiana to be near family. Pillow’s previous career was spent in the creative division for Hallmark Cards. She worked and lived in Kansas City for 30 years. “It was time for a change,” says Pillow. A North Central High School and Purdue graduate, she was ready to move back home and begin a new venture. The process of creating a new piece begins with sketches. Then Pillow starts gathering materials from her hoard of supplies. On a tray, she displays the color palette of the small items that will be details of her creation, along with materials she has collected to form the base and spindle legs for the whimsy dancer (for lack of a better term). Her creative space overflows with material all meticulously organized.
In order to stay focused on a piece, she maintains an organizational system that would make Martha Stewart envious. “If it’s color coordinated, it can’t be considered hoarding!” defends Pillow of her amazingly organized selections of ribbons, buttons, beads, strings, earrings and metals of all atGeist.com / MARCH 2014 / GEIST / 51
shapes and sizes. This eclectic collection of items that she has spent years collecting all have an intention of purpose. “This will be an elephant,” says Pillow, as she holds up a spout severed from an old watering can. “I just need a few more parts.”
“HER CREATIVE SPACE OVERFLOWS WITH MATERIAL ALL METICULOUSLY ORGANIZED.” Her mother was an art teacher, and it is from her that Pillow gleans much of her inspiration. “My mom collected items to repurpose. I have many of the items that she had collected for the intention to use in art. I am simply finishing her work,” states Pillow. This shared love and passion for art is clearly illustrated in all that Pillow does. She shares whimsical drawings of future work, along with her work in progress. Clearly only someone with a clear and creative vision could create such amazing art from everyday objects. Pillow’s work may be viewed on her website, valeriepillow.com, as well as at the French Bleu Gallery in Carmel and at an Etsy store coming soon. halfpag_ad_REV1.pdf

IU SCHOOL OF NURSING CELEBRATES 100 YEARS IU SCHOOL OF NURSING DEAN MARION BROOME, PH.D. Writer / Kara Reibel
This June, the Indiana University School of Nursing will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The year will also mark the 10th year for Marion Broome, Ph.D., serving as the dean. An IBJ “Woman of Influence” in 2011, Dr. Broome began her nursing career in the Army, where she was stationed at Fort Gordon in Georgia. She was assigned to a pediatric unit and knew instinctively this would be her career focus. It was there that she met her husband, Capt. Carroll Broome. He was a member of the signal corps and is a Vietnam veteran.
“ Health care is shifting to the community. The shift will see growth in community care, with increases in wellness, preventive care and a stronger focus on more holistic chronic illness management.”
leader in research and education, its highly competitive programs have expanded. Student enrollment has increased by 20 to 30 percent over the last 10 years, and the numbers remain strong. The IU School of Nursing offers a full range of degree programs and has the infrastructure in place to meet the needs of the future in health care.
“Health care is shifting to the community,” indicated Dr. Broome. She further explains that hospitals will have fewer beds, with increased — Dean Marion Broome, Ph.D. capacity for intensive care, surgical care and emergency departments. Back in the 1950s, the Associate in Science “The shift will see growth in degree was created to address a nursing Dr. Broome received her master’s degree community care,” states Dr. Broome, “with shortage. The results of this study created the future trend in nursing care would involve the need for access to health care services a baccalaureate as a minimum requirement to and preventive care. This study looks closely at women returning to work and how to best handle that transition as well as sleep, stress and quality of life after chemotherapy. There are many more studies, all important and relevant, whose findings may help benefit those with diabetes, those with cancer, stroke victims and their caregivers, and teens. The reach of IU’s nursing school extends across the Atlantic to Africa. In Monrovia, Liberia, IU has partnered with the University of Liberia to establish the first public baccalaureate program in nursing and midwifery. Students currently enrolled at the Tubman National Institute for Medical Arts at JFK Medical Center will complete their degree at the University of Liberia. An IU nursing alum, Wvannie Scott-McDonald, Ph.D., who is Liberian, received her master’s degree and her doctorate at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI. It was through Dr. Scott-McDonald’s efforts and initiative that this school liaison was achieved. Dr. Scott-McDonald’s cousin is the president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize. Abroad or stateside, Dr. Broome indicates that preparing students for their careers in nursing is the single most important role of IU’s nursing school. With the dynamics in health care continually changing, creativity and flexibility of health care providers is a must. Dr. Broome, throughout her tenure, has witnessed changes in nursing care as well as foreseen changes to come, adapting as necessary to meet demands and to be ahead of the curve. Research is an important component of IU’s nursing school. IU focuses on symptom management with studies focused on helping individuals maintain or improve their quality of life. Recently in the news, attention has focused on a current study of music therapy with teens experiencing chemotherapy. In an article by the BBC News, “Making Music Videos Helps Young Cancer Patients Cope,” IU music therapist nurse researchers, led by Dr. Joan Haase and Dr. Sheri Robb, found the patients gained resilience and improved relationships with family and friends. All the patients were
undergoing high-risk stem cell transplant treatments. To produce their music videos, the young patients were asked to write song lyrics, record sounds and collect video images to create their story. In another study, the nursing school is examining the experience of diabetic teens transitioning from high school to college. Dr. Kathleen Hanna’s study of these teens may help others transition to managing their own care independently. IU’s nursing school is also studying cognitive changes in women during and after chemotherapy.
Little known fact: Audrey Geisel (widow of Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel) is a graduate of IU’s nursing school and received her honorary doctorate in 2005. Not only is June the 100th anniversary of the nursing school, but Dr. Broome and her husband, Dr. Carroll Broome, have another major event to celebrate: their daughter’s wedding. Drs. Broome have two grandsons from their son and daughter-in-law.

2014 GEIST REAL ESTATE FORECAST By Diane Harrington
atGeist.com / MARCH 2014 / GEIST / 57
AREA REALTORS SEE 2014 AS A HOME SELLER’S MARKET After some slow years in the real estate market, buying and selling picked up in 2013 (14 percent better than 2012, notes Kim Troyer of Keller Williams), and the outlook for 2014 looks positive too. Of course, you wouldn’t know it yet, thanks to the crazy winter weather. “2014 is starting off just a little softer than 2013,” says Chris Schulhof of RE/MAX Realty Services. “Based on current activity, when the weather breaks, I anticipate the spring to be very strong, as interest rates have pulled back slightly from fall levels.” “The talk among agents is the surge in business that seems to be building,” says Lee Bailey of The Pfahler Group at RE/MAX Metro. “We are all preparing for a much busier and competitive housing market in the coming year.” Julianne Deely-Frost of Prudential IN Realty Group says she’s already sold more homes at this point in 2014 than she had for the same time period in 2013. She envisions interest rates stabilizing at their current level, which is great for buyers. All types of buyers are in the market all year long, says Marie Ippolito of F.C. Tucker Co. Retirees are looking for ranches or mainlevel master suites. Growing families usually

prefer two-story homes. Single people tend to focus on townhomes or condos. Denise Silk of RE/MAX Legends notes, “Lakefront homes are always desirable and in demand, regardless of any specific neighborhood.”
“I believe the most competitive market will be in the under $350,000-priced homes,” says Patty Torr of F.C. Tucker. If you have a luxury home with a higher price than that, it may not sell as quickly or at the price you hope.
“In addition, with aging parents and postcollege-age children sometimes staying at home longer, mother-in-law suites or studio-type living areas — whether located in the basement or an over-garage apartment or pool/guest house area — are an added selling feature,” says Mary Ann Avery of F.C. Tucker Co.
While it’s a seller’s market this year, that doesn’t mean you can get top dollar without trying. “A home is worth what someone is willing to pay for it — not what the seller thinks it is worth,” Torr explains. “To sell, a home should be in good repair and be a pleasure to visit.”
Fishers, Carmel and Mt. Vernon are doing well, says Paula Smith of Leo Signature Realty, “particularly in the area of Fishers around the town center—116th and west of 69.”
IT WILL BE A SELLER’S MARKET
A tight inventory, notes Angela Duggan of F.C. Tucker Co., means 2014 is going to be a seller’s market rather than a buyer’s. Tucker colleague Laura Turner agrees: “It’s still looking like a seller’s market. Great homes, priced correctly, are selling quickly, in less A shortage of ready-to-develop lots will probably mean higher prices. If you want an upper-end than a week’s time,” she says. Incoming jobs to the area mean a crop of new residents-to-be looking for homes.

For the full year of 2013 median price was $197,000, yielding an annual increase of 11.5% in home prices from $177,000 in 2012. “The homes that are staged well and upgraded and priced well will sell very quickly,” says Deely-Frost. Avery notes that updates may not reflect a dollar-per-dollar return in the final sales price, but they can help you sell your home more quickly. Josh McNair of RE/MAX Legends Group agrees. “Many of the homes that started going up in the ‘80s around Geist are starting to show their age. So if you want your home to send out and sell quickly, make the necessary updates, declutter and clean,” he says. “ In addition, with aging parents and post-collegeage children sometimes staying at home longer, mother-in-law suites or studio-type living areas — whether located in the basement or an overgarage apartment or pool/guest house area — are an added selling feature.” —Mary Ann Avery of F.C. Patt y Torr
Troyer says that buyers will either take a pass on homes with minor cosmetic defects or will demand significant discounts for them.

ADVICE FOR BUYERS
From a buyer’s standpoint, Smith says that the homes with the best deals are likely to be those that don’t fit what “everyone” wants. “Many buyers in this area would like a three-car garage, basement and four bedrooms. If a buyer can do without one or more of those items, the value they will receive is likely to be greater,” she says.
“ If a buyer is willing to do the cosmetics or even a whole-house remodel, he can find a deal.” —Denise Silk
“Buyers might just have to pay list or just over list to get their dream home,” Turner says, because three other buyers also probably think your dream home is their dream home too.
“ A home is worth what someone is willing to pay for it — not what the seller thinks it is worth. To sell, a home should be in good repair and be a pleasure to visit.” —Patty Torr

Duggan says luxury home prices “will continue to be flat. That is where the deals are. Waterfront and bigger, older homes that need updating will be a deal too,” she says. If some extra money or elbow grease is no object, you may be able to get a good deal on a home. “If a buyer is willing to do the cosmetics or even a whole-house remodel, he can find a deal,” Silk says. “Borrowing renovation money rolled right in with your purchase price [203K Renovation Loan] is definitely gaining popularity with a whole new set of buyers,” Bailey says. “This allows the option to buy a cheaper home and make the upgrades right away.” Just be sure you know what you’re getting into. “A foreclosed/short-sale home might have the least cost per square foot, but a
smart buyer will evaluate what money will need to be put into this home to make it livable and what that will do to the overall cost per square foot compared to homes that are in move-in condition,” Ippolito says. New construction is likely to continue its upward trend in 2014, McNair says. A shortage of ready-to-develop lots will probably mean higher prices, Troyer says. If you want an upper-end home, an existing home may be a better financial bet than building your own. “This effect moderates with lower-cost homes,” she notes. Even though sellers have the upper hand now, buyers would be wise to jump into the market while interest rates are still fairly low. “ I envision interest rates stabilizing at their current level, which is great for buyers.” —Julianne Deely Frost

GEIST LANDS AN ANGLER Writer / Anne E. O’Connor Photographer / Carly Lyon
“It’s pretty rewarding, living the dream,” Todd Hollowell said. The pro angler spoke from his truck as he returned to Fishers from a week in South Carolina and Florida. Of course, he said, hauling a boat through traffic might not be one of the highlights of the trip. Hollowell spends 15 to 20 weeks a year competing in the FLW Tour. In the first event of 2014 held at Lake Okeechobee in Florida, he finished in 77th place and made some money. “Not bad. Not bad,” he said. “I got paid and I’m headed home.” Hollowell, 37, and his brother, Troy Hollowell, 31, grew up in Anderson, Ind., and fished in Geist with their dad. Troy Hollowell, who lives in Paducah, Ky., is in his first year as a pro angler. Todd Hollowell is in his third year. The two brothers meet up and travel together to the tournaments. A natural athlete, Hollowell played high school, college and even a few seasons of professional baseball before entering a fishing tournament in Nashville, Tenn., in 2002 as an amateur. He sat in the back of someone else’s boat and tried his luck. “I was just kind of hooked. I was hooked,” he said. Hollowell has connected with many mentors over the years. Unlike most professional sports, successful anglers can be any age and any ethnicity, male or female. He is paying it forward by mentoring a bass fishing team at Marian University. His television show, “Bass Dr.,” runs on the World Fishing Network and brings bass fishing to an even larger audience. It takes more than fishing skill to make it as a pro angler. Without sponsors, expenses would soon eat up any winnings. Hollowell’s first major sponsor was Red Gold Tomatoes. “They opened the avenue to me to launch my professional career,” he said. The largest privately owned tomato processor in the United States is located in Elwood, Ind., about 45 minutes down the road from Geist. The company supports amateur and professional athletes and events. “It was one of those things where it was a fit,” he said. Red Gold and his other sponsors allow the bass fisher to travel and own and maintain equipment including a boat and the truck to haul it.

Modern technology allows Hollowell to be an independent insurance agent at Ray Insurance Agency in Fishers where he lives with his wife, Rebecca, a nurse at St. Vincent Heart Center, and their two sons, Hunter, 9, and Hayden, 6. The iPhone has become his on-the-road office. Fishing provides income for Hollowell and has a positive economic impact on the area that is sometimes overlooked, the angler said. Up to 80 fishermen will come from out of town for Tuesday night tournaments. They will buy fuel and food when they are in the area. Weekends will see at least one if not two tournaments that bring in even more sportsmen. For Hollowell, the appeal of Geist is clear. “Geist, in my opinion, is one of the best — if not the best — bass fishing lakes in Indiana,” he said.
Expires April 30, 2014
Over the last five years, the habitat for the largemouth bass the reservoir is known for has improved. The water is clearer because of the zebra mussels, and the fish thrive in the weedy milfoil on the bottom. “We have some of the biggest fish in the state of Indiana on Geist Reservoir because of that,” he said.
