Saint Simon The Apostle Catholic Church in Indianapolis will hold its 21st annual Royal Extravaganza on November 7. Shawna O’Brien, marketing coordinator for the Extravaganza, says the event provides an opportunity for the community to come together in a festive setting to support the parish. “Royal X is one of our parish’s largest fundraisers, with money raised supporting over 30 different ministry areas including religious education, youth ministry, A-Rated Saint Simon the Apostle School, and various community outreach programs,” O’Brien says. “Friends, family and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend.” O’Brien is grateful for the large turnout of corporate sponsors. “Our parish community includes many wonderful businesses who donate to this event via corporate sponsorships,” O’Brien says. “We’re grateful for these sponsorships, and would like to acknowledge the following companies and thank them for their generous donation to The 2020 Royal Extravaganza Event: EMS Group, The Harlan Family Foundation, Marten Design, Dellen Automotive, Zink Distributing Company, Sun King Brewing, Main Event, Lenex, Children’s Dental Center, Katz, Sapper & Miller, The Liotti Family, Apex Therapy Clinic, The Basement, Bishop Chatard High School, Cathedral High School, CPM Construction Planning and Management, Guidepoint Security, Holmes Insurance Group, Prime Smile, Salvage & Company, and Sharper Surgery.”
for the event. “This was the best option to ensure a safe event for everyone.” Attendees can expect a range of fun activities. “The theme of the event prior to deciding on outdoor was ‘Homecoming,’” Simerly says. “It was working perfectly since we had been at Daniel’s Vineyard the last several years, and were coming back to Saint Simon for the event. We’ve asked people attending to dress as they remember their high school or college homecoming, with letter jackets, cheerleading uniforms and spirit wear. This year’s event will still offer a live and silent auction, and a live band.” Multiple food truck vendors will also be onsite for the event. “So much of what was traditional will be different,” Simerly says. “We are utilizing fire pit stations as our tables. Ticket prices include a folding chair with the Saint Simon logo. Ten chairs will sit around a fire pit. So many of our decisions were based on COVID restrictions, and minimizing risk as our number-one priority is to keep our community healthy.”
In response to safety concerns related to COVID-19, Saint Simon will hold a tailgatestyle fundraiser this year, in an effort to Co-chair Michael DeSanto says the fire pits bring attendees together in a safe manner. and chairs are keepsakes for attendees. “S’mores kits, and beer and seltzer stations, “We feel the Saint Simon community are also available onsite throughout the really needed to see each other and enjoy event,” he says. fellowship,” says Kelly Simerly, a co-chair

Simerly is optimistic about the Extravaganza. “We’ve been really blessed with our community,” Simerly says. “Local businesses, restaurants and services have been ready and willing to help out. The Saint Simon community is awesome about giving back and shouting out businesses that support us. We’d love to help them help us. We have an email if they have inquiries: saintsimonrx@gmail.com.” Father Doug Marcotte is also grateful. “There is no doubt that the global pandemic has made 2020 unlike any other year in the history of our parish,” Marcotte says. “Through it all, I have been greatly edified by the incredible generosity of our community, and the dedication and hard work of our parish pastoral team and school ministry team. Above all I have been pleased to see our parishioners continue to seek out and make community in creative ways. After all that is what Jesus Christ calls us to, relationship with him and relationship with one another.” Saint Simon The Apostle Catholic Church is located at 8155 Oaklandon Road in Indianapolis. Over the course of his life, Scott Burton has enjoyed several careers. He began as an attorney before transitioning to commercial real estate investment. Next, he opened a business that ran youth sports leagues and tournaments. When he retired seven years ago, only a few weeks had passed before his wife Laura lovingly told him, “You need to find something to do. You’re driving me crazy.” After contemplating what might be a good fit, the couple thought about how much they enjoyed wine tasting trips to Napa, California. “We wanted to do something fun and different,” Scott Burton says. “We thought, ‘Why not create the Napa experience back here at home?’” When they first mentioned the idea to friends, they were met with skepticism.
“A lot of people thought we were crazy, but we kind of swam upstream with the idea,” Burton recalls.
says. “That area of Fishers is so unique, full of restaurants and entertainment destinations.”
In 2015 the Burtons opened Peace Water Winery in Carmel, Indiana’s only locallyowned California winery - meaning the owners handcraft wines in Napa Valley and bring them to Indiana. They followed up on that venture by opening another location in downtown Indianapolis in 2017. Around that time a property developer approached them to ask if they would be interested in some real estate in Fishers District. The Burtons didn’t want to bite off more than they could chew so they passed at the time. They revisited the idea this year and were thrilled that there was space available.
Earlier this year the pair had been plugging along in the building process when the governor issued the lockdown order, forcing Burton to do the majority of the construction himself in order to get it done on time. Though some people may have been scared of committing to a new business venture during a pandemic, the Burtons weren’t fazed.
“It’s a perfect fit for what we do,” Burton NOVEMBER 2020
“We were committed to this,” Burton says. “Someday this pandemic will go away and we’ll get back to normal.” In the meantime, the owners are happy to see people with masks social distancing.
They held a soft opening in late June and have been pleased by turnouts. They draw people in with live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as well as partnerships with several local establishments including the HC Tavern + Kitchen, 1933 Lounge and Sangiovese Ristorante. The couple is devoted to giving back to the community, and they created a Giving Wall that highlights eight local and global charities, each selected by one of their eight grown children. They donate 50% of proceeds to these charities. When a customer buys a bottle of wine they receive a token, which they deposit next to the nonprofit of their choice. The owners purposefully designed the Giving Wall to be an interactive experience so customers can feel good about giving. Burton says many organizations do great things for charities but it’s often behind the scenes. Here, the giving is front and center. “The idea is that hopefully the giving will have a lasting effect,” he says. “If they do it at Peace Water Winery, maybe they’ll do it somewhere else down the road.” Employees at Peace Water Winery don’t accept tips, so any tips customers wish to give are also passed on to charities. In addition, since the Burtons want to help as many nonprofits as possible, they regularly host fundraisers and donate 10% of each night’s sales to a particular nonprofit. The Burtons created a monthly wine club called the Peace Posse, which has grown to 1,500 members. For a monthly fee, members get one or two bottles of wine each month. When members pick up their bottles, they can enjoy a free glass of wine or free wine tasting. In addition, when a winemaker from Napa comes to town, they do meet-and-greet nights as well as special dinners with the club. Some of the owners’ favorite gatherings center around community service. “Laura often volunteers at the soup kitchen downtown,” Burton says. NOVEMBER 2020
“Sometimes when there’s nobody to staff it, we’ll put calls out to our Peace Posse and they get to participate in those give-back opportunities.” Burton says Laura is always doing things for other people.
With a successful business, eight children, two grandchildren (and three more on the way), as well as three dogs, three horses, two cats and a cow, the couple doesn’t have a ton of free time. They often spend it practicing yoga and going to the Bridgewater Club. Mostly, they’re simply happy making people happy.
“Her philosophy on life is, ‘We’re all in this together. Let’s help each other out,’” he says.
“We didn’t open the winery with any grand ideas to become some huge, mass-

SHOP FISHERS POPULAR EVENT RETURNS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES DURING TRYING TIMES Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Kerch Creative
The City of Fishers will once again host Shop Fishers on Saturday, Nov. 28 to highlight local businesses. “Everyone knows Black Friday,” says Stephanie Perry, Assistant Director of Public Relations for the City of Fishers. “This event is a great way to get many of the same deals, but here at the local level.”
The initiative will offer discounts and promotions from more than 50 different local businesses and restaurants to promote shopping locally. “Our community has been great about supporting local businesses either through curbside pickup, carry out or online ordering,” Perry says. “I think this year it’s especially important to come together and support our local community. These business owners are our neighbors, NOVEMBER 2020
our friends and residents here in our community as well. This event is about showing them some extra support this year and shopping local as much as possible during the holiday season.” Many businesses participate year after year. Four Day Ray Brewing will offer a 15% discount on items purchased online. “This is a great way to support the local community,” says Brooke Killey, Marketing
& Events Director at Four Day Ray Brewing. “It’s a great way to not only push traffic to our business but other local businesses near us.”

“It’s our brown ale with cinnamon and nutmeg,” Killey says. “It has hints of malty sweetness, nuts, honey and biscuit. It’s like a warm hug in a glass. It’s a fan favorite we bring back each year.”
“The Fisher’s community is so entrepreneurial,” says Brooke Wyatt, CEO of Rosie Boutique. “I’m one of the younger participants so it’s very cool for me as a CEO and as an entrepreneur to look up to other business owners in the area. I’m a huge fan of the other boutiques and local businesses here. It’s an honor for me to be in the entrepreneur community and helping other people with this the support shop small.”

The Wispy Pine Boutique opened in September “We focus on making women feel confident and empowered through the clothing we sell,” says Jami Griffith, The Wispy Pine Boutique Manager. “We’re a little off the beaten path, so a lot of times people will tell us they saw our store while going to Starbucks.” Griffith is excited to participate in the event because the city has already been so supportive. Wispy Pine will offer shoppers $10 off every $50 spent in-store. “One of the wonderful things about this
community is there are so many small, local places to eat and shop,” Griffith says. “The fact that Fishers wants to showcase those places for the community is really special. Unplug Soy Candles will participate for the first time this year and will offer 20% off November 25-30. Exclusions apply. Additionally, during Shop Fishers, shoppers will receive a free Gold Tin candle with every $50 spent. “We sell candles that not only smell great but are also home decor pieces,” says Jessica Matson, Sales and Marketing Manager at Unplug Soy Candles.

10 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR HOSTING THANKSGIVING Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
Can you smell the turkey and stuffing already? Thanksgiving dinners are not something that happens without preparation and strategy. If the day doesn’t flow just right, you could be in for disaster. But here are a few helpful tips for hosting your big dinner with ease of execution.
1. BAKE DESSERTS EARLY
Or buy them pre-made. Honestly, this is one thing that you don’t NEED to worry about if you don’t want to. If there’s that one pie that you make every year, then make it, but make it early. Make it a day (or two) before and it will still taste just as good, if not better!
2. SET THE TABLE PRIOR
If you can, set the table at least the day before, do it. Gather your florals, your plates, your flatware and arrange them how you like. Not only will you be able to enjoy the table setting for a day or two longer, you will have taken one more thing off your plate for the big day and given yourself more time!
3. WRITE OUT A SCHEDULE
The key to hosting Thanksgiving like a boss is execution. So the best way to execute
flawlessly is to know how you want the day to go down. Write out a schedule showing the order you’ll be putting things in the oven and include how long and what temperature. Leave spaces in between where you can add in what you’ll be doing on the stove during those cooking times. A schedule will really help the day go much smoother and prevent forgetting things.
4. EMPTY EVERYTHING
Trashes, Dishwasher, Fridge. Lots of things are going to be happening in the kitchen and you don’t want to have the extra stress of needing to unload the dishwasher and shove things in the fridge when you should be checking the turkey. Remember, there will be LOTS of dirty dishes and LOTS of leftovers so make sure there is room for both before you even start the day. This is a perfect task to do the night before.
5. MAKE BREAKFAST EASY
This will give you a nice, quiet time before the other guests arrive.
6. DON’T DENY HELP
It can be hard to open up your kitchen and allow others in, especially when you have a plan or idea of how everything is going to go. But if you’ve written it all down, don’t deny someone asking to help. Take all the help you can get! This might even allow you to sneak in a shower which you probably haven’t taken yet. With the morning schedule being written out, others can see your plan and can help without hindering. If you don’t have it all written out, make sure when you accept the help from others that you give specific tasks so no one is feeling in the way.
7. DON’T FRET OVER THE APPETIZERS
Look, there’s going to be a lot of food, so don’t fret the small stuff. Appetizers can be kept to easy charcuterie boards, fruits and veggies. If you are famous for certain appetizers, feel free to still make them, but try to make them ahead of time so all you have to worry about on the big day is setting them out.
With all the food that’s going to be available in just a few short hours, don’t worry too much about preparing breakfast for everyone. Grab store bought muffins, donuts, or cinnamon rolls to set out early in the morning that the kids and husband can grab as they like. Or, if you have houseguests 8. MOCKTAILS & COCKTAILS who prefer a warm breakfast, have the rest Very. Important. Make sure you have of the family take them to the best local cafe. drinks available for your guests. If you don’t NOVEMBER 2020
want to have a full self-serve bar, pre-mix a seasonal drink for everyone to enjoy. Maybe keep the alcohol to the side so your guests can add if they choose. Grab juice boxes for the kids so you don’t have spills all over the place too!
9. PLAN FOR EARLY ARRIVALS
No matter what time you set the start of dinner, people will arrive earlier than you expect. Make sure you are ready. Have football on in one room and Thanksgiving parades in another. This is also where premade appetizers are perfect! Just pull them out as the doorbell rings and you are sure to be on the top hostess list.
10. EXPRESS YOUR GRATEFULNESS
No matter how you spend your day, be sure to share how grateful you are for the amazing gifts you are all sharing. Whether everyone writes something down or you go around the table and share what you are grateful for out loud, make sure you do this. It’s always great to come together and share the good things we are blessed to have. Whether it is your first time hosting or you are a seasoned pro, with all these tips, you are sure to be the hostess with the most-ess and sparkle throughout the day! Just remember not to sweat the small stuff and enjoy the little things, after all, we are celebrating all the things we are thankful for and there’s no reason to stress if something doesn’t go just the way you planned. Give yourself grace and you are sure to have the best Thanksgiving yet.

NEW LOCAL GROUP GIVES OPPORTUNITIES TO THOSE WITH DISABILITIES Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Kelli White
Fishers recently welcomed a new organization that adds to the city’s ongoing efforts to make the city accessible and inclusive for all residents. Thrive Social Club offers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) the opportunity to connect with their peers through activities and events sponsored by the city. The idea for the club was set into motion by Mari Kennedy, who has a son with IDD and is a member of the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability (FACD).
With the exception of highly structured entities such as the Special Olympics or integrated employment, adults with IDD have few opportunities for social interaction with anyone outside their family. Thrive Social Club seeks to fill that void. The goal is to facilitate positive interactions and the chance to develop friendships within the support of the club. “Since my son Ryan has Down syndrome, the idea of something like this has been mulling around in my mind for years,” Kennedy says. “I feel there is a post-high school ‘cliff ’ where after leaving school, NOVEMBER 2020
there is little opportunity to find a social group. I always knew something like this was needed. “At first I considered starting the club through my church, but then I discussed the idea with Cecilia Coble, Fishers city councilor and chairman of FACD. She said, ‘Why don’t we make it a city club under the umbrella of FACD?’ The club was launched in the last few months from there,” Kennedy says. Thrive Social Club is guided by an advisory board consisting of members with a strong interest in the club’s mission. Joining

“There is another piece to Thrive Social Club,” Kennedy adds. “We had our first meeting in October at Flat Fork Creek and participated in a park cleanup in Early on, the City of Fishers and Kennedy’s conjunction with Keep Fishers Beautiful. board conducted a survey within the I realized that there were just as many community to gauge interest in a possible caregivers there as club members. “Although the club membership is for those 18 and older, we envision the club to be focused on individuals with IDD in their 20s and 30s,” Kennedy adds. “Of course, we will follow COVID guidelines and follow social distancing procedures. Thrive Fishers provides an available and welcoming opportunity for people of all abilities to have social interaction while participating in activities connected to our city.” For more information, visit facebook.com/Thrive.FishersIN, and email ThriveFishers@gmail.com.

Paul Nurkkala clearly remembers the beginning of his drone obsession. “I got into drones starting at Christmas time of 2014,” he says. “My in-laws bought me a toy drone for Christmas. I just pulled it out, and that was the thing that I got hooked on.” Now a competitor in the internationally televised Drone Racing League, Nurkkala (also known as Nurk) has taken his fascination to magnificent heights. A resident of Castleton, Nurkkala, winner of the 2018 Drone Racing League Allianz World Championship, competes in races across the globe and in the DRL SIM, a true-to-life drone racing game on Xbox and Steam Since venturing down this path, Nurkkala has also discovered the captivating visual content drones can create, regularly producing YouTube videos of his own while also contributing to commercials, movies and more.

With a background in software engineering, Nurkkala began researching drone repair after breaking the first drone he received. Through this research, Nurkkala started down a droneracing rabbit hole. “I got a YouTube University education in drone repair, and in the process of that research I stumbled across a video of drone racing,” he says. “I found that video while I was sitting at work, and I remember sitting there and just thinking, ‘I have to do that.’” One month later, Nurkkala had built his first drone. A few months after that, he won his first competitive race. As wins began piling up, Nurkkala was eventually invited to compete in the Drone Racing League. “At the time, it was a TV show on ESPN, and now it’s a TV show on NBC,” he says. “In my second year as a part of that series, I became the 2018 Drone Racing League Allianz World Champion.” Nurkkala now professionally competes in races at various levels, with prizes that range from $5,000 to $100,000. “I’ll compete anywhere, from a little micro drone race at the Dayton Air Force Museum to local amateur series to pro-am series down in Daytona Beach - and then all the way up to globally televised Drone Racing League events,” Nurkkala says. When it comes to the Drone Racing League, Nurkkala says wins are calculated based on a points system. “For the races that are on the Drone Racing League, you have a series of heats that consist of a semifinals and a finals,” he says. “Through those heats you race all six drones at the same time, and first to the finish wins. Then, you assign points based on your finish order. You accumulate points to move on to the final round, and then the final round is the person with the most points at the end.” Due to the speed of drones, Nurkkala says crashes are likely. “These drones go 0 to 90 miles an hour in less than a second, and they top out at 90 miles an hour,” he says. “You’re trying to fly them through 34 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / atGeist.com
obstacles that are only 7 feet by 7 feet. If you map that out, it ends up that every millisecond that you’re late, you’re about 8 feet late from making a mistake. So crashes are common, but the top pilots are finishing all, if not most, heats.” Through Drone Racing League competition, Nurkkala has been able to travel all over the world, while connecting with fellow drone racers of various nationalities. “[The league] has this effect where it brings people together, because everyone’s gone through the same narrative of crashing, building, fixing and having frustrating moments,” Nurkkala says. Because of this shared narrative, I’ve been able to interact at a deeper level with people around the world - people that don’t even share the same language as me.”
Looking for a New Dentist? 150+ REVIEWS
In addition to the technical side of drone racing, Nurkkala says a high level of mental toughness is required to succeed, like any other professional sport. “The absolute most difficult part of racing is the mental side - it’s letting go,” he says. “I can practice until my fingers bleed, but if I don’t deliver on that on race day, there’s no point. So not only am I focusing on improving my skills as a pilot, but I’m trying to improve my skills as a competitor as well.” After finishing fifth in the 2019 DRL Allianz World Championship, Nurkkala will try to reclaim his title in the upcoming 2020 season, which kicked off on Wednesday, October 21 on NBCSN, Twitter and Facebook Watch. “The biggest goal is always to maintain world championship status,” Nurkkala says. “That kicks off a little bit later in the year, so nothing is getting too affected by that yet. I’ll be doubling down on training pretty soon for that.”

Hauser says. “With the help of God, we were able to turn it into a healthy, stable ministry that focused on reaching the greater Little Rock community. We launched a second site of the ministry about a year ago. Hauser appreciates the Hamilton County area. “Andrea and I are both originally from the Midwest, so it feels like we are coming home,” he says. “We also have some extended family and friends in the Fishers and Carmel area, and have always been impressed with the community.” Hauser has also been impressed with Holy Cross Lutheran School. “The school is amazing,” Hauser says. “Principal Karen Geiger has created an excellent staff, and an incredible culture in the school. Over the past nine months, COVID has made operating a school very difficult. Yet, Holy Cross has thrived. I am thrilled to have my younger four kids attend Holy Cross Lutheran School, and honored to partner with Principal Geiger to continue developing the culture.”
