YEARS 1918-2018

The Road to Perfection HOW THE CATHEDRAL BASEBALL TEAM FACED ADVERSITY TO WIN IT ALL Writer & Photographer / Lynda Hedberg Thies

The Cathedral Irish baseball team accomplished what only three other teams in the state of Indiana have accomplished — a perfect season. With a 29-0 record, they became the first Cathedral baseball team to go undefeated and win the state championship. A remarkable accomplishment for the Irish, who had the odds stacked against them and found a way to not only win but achieve perfection for a season.

The Irish faced a level of adversity that would make most programs justify that it was a rebuilding year, especially since they were not mentioned in any preseason polls. Big deal right? But this team had only three returning starters, they lost the only coach they knew, and they lost the only field they knew when Lawrence Township did not renew the school’s contract for Hair Field. That meant these boys played every single game on the road all season. This was a big deal. Yes, it is easy to be joyful when you are winning, but when you are not expected to win, the season can take on a whole new purpose. atGeist.com / AUGUST 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9

Sometimes a team strategy happens completely by default, as was the case when a few of the seniors got the idea to grow out their mustaches during the team’s first week of baseball during spring break. Just some boys and Hair Club for Men for facial hair. What could go wrong? They planned to have them during the break because of the school’s no facial hair policy. But when the team won every game, the boys were too superstitious to shave them off because of a policy. So, they reached out to Cathedral President

Rob Bridges to ask permission to keep them. Bridges agreed but requested that they would shave them off when they lost. The boys took on the challenge and #SaveTheStache was born. Win after win they maintained them even when it wasn’t convenient, which meant they would go to prom and graduation with them. Although their dates and moms were not so thrilled, there was no turning back. Eventually the coaching staff got in on the fun, too. It was easy to get behind this team because they had overcome so much adversity, but along the way the team’s bond strengthened and the energy and momentum continued to swing in their favor. It was obvious this was a united team having the time of their lives, playing the game they loved.

deeply for each other, for the game of baseball and how much this perfect season truly meant to them.

How will you remember this season and this team?

What were your favorite memories of this season?

Tommy Kafka: “I will remember the season and the state championship by the bonds my teammates and I made and by the medal we won.”

Nick Eaton & Tommy Kafka: “When we all dog-piled on Victory Field after winning the state championship!” Jared Poland: “Overcoming sectionals for the first time in three years.” Charlie Gomez: “Golf after practice tradition.” Evan Thies: “The first practice of the year, snow on the ground and 30 degrees and Ross Kirkpatrick is wearing a t-shirt.”

A Look Back

Best part of the season?

So much has been written already about this team, but with the season just barely in the rear-view mirror, we invited five players on Cathedral, senior IU Commit and lead pitcher, Nick Eaton, second baseman and closing pitcher Tommy Kafka, 4-year starting catcher, senior Charlie Gomez, Louisville commit shortstop and junior, Jared Poland, and utility player, senior Evan Thies, to reflect and share their favorite memories, how they will remember this season and what lessons they learned that they will take with them in the future. Their responses show that this was special and cared

Tommy Kafka: “Being doubted the entire season and finishing undefeated.”

Jared Poland: “I will remember our practices being fun and relaxed before games. I will also remember the chemistry we had all year and how we all enjoyed every day of preparation for trying to win the state championship. I will also remember how relaxed we stayed for each game and that we treated every game as just another game, which ultimately helped us stay loose to win games. I will always remember the tough state game where we battled the whole time, and the home run Evan Uhland hit for the winning run.” Nick Eaton: “Playing baseball the way it should be played — loose and fun.” Charlie Gomez: “Like a movie. It doesn’t feel real yet.”

Nick Eaton: “Messing around at practice and playing baseball like a bunch of little kids.” Evan Thies: “I will always remember it as a group of guys that were as close and united Jared Poland: “The celebrations on the bus as I've ever had the privilege of being on a after sectional, regional, semi-state and state team with.” championships.” Charlie Gomez: “Eating cereal at the after party.” Evan Thies: “Spring Break games and the beginning of the mustaches.” 10 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017 / atGeist.com

What lessons did you learn that you will take with you going forward? Tommy Kafka: “A lesson I learned from this season is to always stick together because many people working together will take you

much further than just one.” Jared Poland: “I learned that talent doesn't win championships. Good team chemistry and a strong desire to win is what we had. That is how we finished undefeated and won state. We didn't have the most talented team in the state, but we had a very solid one and the best team chemistry. We all got along and each game was fun because of the energy Ross Kirkpatrick brought and that was a major key to winning.” Nick Eaton: “I learned to cherish every moment possible with your teammates.” Charlie Gomez: “I learned how having fun and enjoying every moment of life is more important than you may think.” Evan Thies: “Everyone was playing for each other, and not for themselves as individuals. We all had a bigger goal in mind that trumped whatever personal gain could have been accomplished.”

Briezy’s Bunch

LO CAL NONPROFIT SEEKS TO ASSIST THOSE DEALING WITH EPILEPSY-RELATED ISSUES

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Many people are familiar with the frustration that can result from an insurance provider’s refusal to cover certain medical services, devices or medications. In the case of April and Justin Krowel’s two-yearold daughter Aubrie, who suffers from an extremely rare, lifelong form of epilepsy known as Dravet syndrome, such refusals can be life threatening. In February of 2016, Aubrie had her first seizure at just eight months old, alerting the Geist-based Krowels to her condition, which can manifest in the form of febrile and non-febrile seizures and include developmental problems. During the ensuing months, April spent hour after hour on the phone figuring out what her insurance plan would cover, and learning the reasoning – or lack thereof – behind many of her policy details. “There’s a really large gap between what insurance will typically cover and what a neurologist or other medical professional will say that you need,” April says. “It’s something that I never thought of before, and that realization was a big shocker for me.” According to statistics posted on the American Epilepsy Society’s official website, one in 26 people will develop a form of epilepsy or recurring seizures at some point in their lifetime. After joining an online support group for families and individuals dealing with epilepsy and its attendant insurance challenges, the Krowels realized the scope of the problem and felt compelled to form a nonprofit business that could financially assist families in their shoes.

– we’re both veterans, so we wanted to do a nonprofit for veterans for a long time, then this happened with our daughter and we realized that this is our mission now.”

“I read a posting by a father who had a daughter having really awful seizures and a medication issue with his insurance, and, following an insurance decision, she ended up in the hospital in a coma,” says April, who completed her Ph.D. in counseling psychology at Ball State University in July. “That was the last straw for me. I said to my husband, ‘We’re doing this now.’ We’ve always wanted to do some sort of non-profit

The result is Briezy’s Bunch, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization the Krowels named in honor of Aubrie’s nickname, and through which they plan to offer donationbased financial support for epilepsy-related treatments, services and equipment not covered through insurance plans. In May, the Krowels launched the Briezy’s Bunch official website, which includes information about how to volunteer with 14 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017 / atGeist.com

the organization, a donation page and an online store. “If there’s a teenager who has seizures that have been catastrophic, and now they’re developmentally delayed and they have gait problems, then perhaps they need an adaptive stroller but insurance won’t cover it because it’s not a wheelchair,” April says. “Those can be $1,500 to $2,000 for a decent one. So, for a family that doesn’t have the means, and insurance won’t cover it but the neurologist is saying it would be helpful, we want to swoop in and pay that for them and help them out.”

"We’ve always wanted to do some sort of non-profit – we’re both veterans, so we wanted to do a nonprofit for veterans for a long time, then this happened with our daughter and we realized that this is our mission now.”

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

The Briezy’s Bunch website includes an Assistance page with an email address where those interested in receiving financial help can reach out to Krowel and her staff to receive an application. Required materials include a signed application, a liability waiver, documentation of an insurance denial and a letter from a neurologist or other medical professional recommending the service or device needed for the patient. “You can donate directly on the site, and the P.O. Box address is on the site too to donate that way,” April says. ”We also have a GoFundMe site where there are tiered gifts for donations.” Learn more about Briezy’s Bunch, including details on how to apply for financial assistance and how to donate, at briezysbunch.com and gofundme.com/briezysbunchstartup.

A house isn’t a home until its owners make it their own. This is what John and Kara Gurchiek have done with their Geist estate. Since it was built in 1990, their estate has experienced additions and changes, only to fall into severe disrepair over the last decade. With buying the property as an investment, the Gurchiek’s decided to place extensive TLC into the estate, creating a warm, family-focused home for themselves and their children in the process.

a repair list nearly as long as the driveway, created expertly from pavers, the Gurchiek’s took on the task to create a livable home for themselves and three young children. “Many of the repairs were needed due to deterioration from vacancy and lack of care,” John says.

It is now on the market and the virtual tour video has gone viral, with the number of views matching its asking price.

The main residence has square footage of 14,480 square feet, with the additional garage space of 11,593, making it one of the largest properties in the area.

The home is nearly unrecognizable with the improvements. With

treatments as well as many of the special luxury design elements inside the home, such as the Venetian plaster in the great room. “Sean is an amazing artist. We commissioned him to do high end finishes throughout the home,” John says. The updates were not limited to the interior of the home, with much of the budgeting applied to exterior treatments. “The landscaping was a disaster,” John says. “We updated the grounds around the home, including extensive masonry repair and replacing the entire brick wall bordering the pool.”

“More than 80 windows were repaired, brickwork and masonry redone, complete cedar shake roof repair and restoration, foundational corrections, landscaping, interior updating and repair. The list of what has been done to this home over the last few years is astonishing,” says realtor Allen Williams. “There is not a room in the home that’s not been redone or touched.” The luxury estate is experiencing a renaissance after prior owners created notoriety. With room for a large family to experience livable luxury, an entertaining area to enjoy with large groups and 4.9 acres of privacy on Geist, the $3.495 million-dollar price tag is a bargain.

AMERICA’S MOST NOTORIOUS PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR, STEVE CARMAN, LAUNCHES NEW CRIME RADIO SHOW

Writer / Jon Shoulders Phographer / Jamie Sangar

Crime aficionados in the greater Indianapolis area can now learn neverbefore-heard details on some of the country’s most famous criminal cases by tuning in to “America’s Most Notorious”, which launched in June on Freedom 95 Radio. Host Steve Carman, a west-side Indy native and Geist resident, doesn’t rely on secondhand accounts – he speaks with investigators, victims and criminals directly, offering them the chance to speak on the air, unfiltered and at great length, about their experiences. And if you’re wondering how Carman is able to track down his guests and persuade them to come on his show, the fact that he’s a licensed private investigator with three decades of experience certainly doesn’t hurt. Carman worked in law enforcement as a deputy sheriff after graduating with a degree in political science from Indiana University in 1989 and has since worked arson and insurance investigations, missing person inquiries, financial fraud and even murder cases. Earlier this year he launched SIU Resource Group, his own private investigative firm.

“I happened to make some contacts with Freedom Radio 95.9, and someone there eventually suggested a show,” Carman says. “The station started asking me what my experiences are and who I’ve had interactions with. When I told them they said it would make for a great show, talking to all different kinds of people – victims and criminals. I’m having a great time with it. BOILERMAKERS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK NEW PURDUE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH JEFF BROHM TALKS UPCOMING SEASON Writer / Matt Roberts Photography provided by Purdue University Athletics

Over the last 10 seasons, Purdue football has won 35 games and made two bowl appearances (both losses). In the last four years, the team has scraped together an average of two victories. Maybe most disturbing, Purdue hasn’t beaten arch-rival Indiana since 2012. Several pre-season polls anticipate more of the same, projecting only a couple of wins for the Boilermakers in 2017.

New Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm isn’t promising any miracles, but optimism is again stirring in West Lafayette.

Brohm played college football at Louisville, where he was a three-year starter at quarterback. After graduation, he spent seven seasons in the NFL with stints at Cleveland, “We want to field a team that’s competitive Denver, Tampa, San Francisco, Washington and fights to win every game,” Brohm says. and San Diego. When his playing days “Purdue is a place with great academics, ended, Brohm served as an assistant coach and West Lafayette is a great college town. at Louisville, Florida Atlantic, Illinois, UAB People are starving for success, and they and Western Kentucky before his selection as want to see the football program step up and head coach at Western. do well. scoring at over 45 points per game while Purdue was averaging under 25. The “Cradle of Quarterbacks” may see a return to lofty scoring levels at some point, but for now the coach sees his defense as being a bit ahead of the offense. “Our running backs and tight ends are probably going to be our strengths on offense,” he says. “We have to continue to get better on the offensive line and build some depth. At quarterback, we must be more consistent.

“I’m probably a little more optimistic on defense. But once we get past the first team, we’re not where I’d like to be depth-wise.” Brohm has been busily recruiting freshmen, but he’s also added immediate help with some graduate transfers. Josh Okonye is a versatile defensive back from Wake Forest, and wide receiver Corey Holmes will have two seasons of eligibility after graduating from Notre Dame. Despite the recent seasons of futility, Brohm believes Purdue can attract high-level student-athletes. “We have a lot to offer at Purdue,” he says. “The academic reputation, the Big Ten conference and the opportunity to play against the best teams in the country. And, to be honest, playing time. We don’t have the depth we’d like, so a guy can come in and be a difference-maker. “I think we’re making strides,” he adds. “It’s just going to be a matter of getting out there and competing, keeping guys healthy, getting a little momentum and maybe winning a game we’re not supposed to.”

Indiana University Head Football Coach Tom Allen didn’t come to his job in the usual way. He joined the IU staff in 2016 as defensive coordinator after serving in the same role at South Florida. Within days of the end of the 2016 season - and only weeks before IU was to appear in the Foster Farms Bowl - he was selected to replace Kevin Wilson. “When you take a job you’re not usually trying to get ready for a bowl game in the next month,” Tom Allen says. “Even though there was a lot of uncertainty, guys locked arms and stepped up.”

The Indiana native not only had to coach his team through a bowl game, but try to hold on to the recruits who had already committed to IU and assemble a staff of assistant coaches. “Right after that, recruiting became the focus, and during the same time, we were putting together a staff,” Allen says. “It really did (turn out well). I think it helped that I was here before. We only lost one player who had committed. You never know how that’s going to work out.” The IU defense made huge strides in 2016, reducing the number of points yielded per game by over 27 percent. Allen believes his defense still has room to improve.

“We really did have dramatic improvement (last year), but I want to be a top 25 defense this year,” he says. “We just have to build on that momentum. Red zone defense is an area we have to focus on. We forced field goals, but we didn’t block many, and last year we didn’t finish (games) as well as I’d like to.” The coach was heavily involved in recruiting last year, but one newcomer is especially familiar. Freshman linebacker Thomas Allen from Tampa Plant High School signed with his father’s team last summer. The younger Allen reportedly received offers from Rutgers, South Florida and other Division I schools, and was listed in the top 100 linebackers nationally. Coach Allen admits that it’s sometimes a struggle not to blur the lines between coach and father. “It can be hard to separate,” he says. “I mean, he’s still your son, and you find your eyes going to him. So, that’s something you just have to focus on.” Both Allens will be trying to raise the bar for Indiana University football in 2017. The program has frequently slipped into the shadow cast by men’s basketball, but Coach Allen means to change that. “Our objective is to contend for a Big Ten championship,” he says. “We don’t have a strong history. We haven’t won a bowl game since before our players were born. We have to start winning them.” TownePost.com / AUGUST 2017 / INDY METRO

DAUGHTER RUNS FREE TO BREATHE 5K IN SUPPORT OF HER FATHER AND LUNG CANCER RESEARCH

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

Tom Bowers had always been an active, healthy guy, so he was frustrated last fall when he developed a cough he couldn’t shake. Suspecting pneumonia, he went to the doctor, only to learn that there was a spot on one of his lungs. He was prescribed an antibiotic and sent on his way. A month later, a CT scan revealed the spot was still there. Tom’s daughter, Kathy Oneacre of Lawrence, was visiting her parents near Cincinnati, Ohio, over the Thanksgiving

holiday. While at a Christmas tree farm searching for just the right Fraser Fir, Kathy’s mom dropped a bomb on her. “Your dad’s getting a PET scan tomorrow because a CT scan showed something that could be cancer,” she said. Being a principal medical writer with iVentiv Health Clinical, Kathy knew how to read the CT report. The results made her stomach churn. “It was clear that the PET scan was for confirmation,” Kathy says. “Dad had cancer. TownePost.com / AUGUST 2017 / INDY METRO

Still, I was optimistic, thinking that since it was only in one lobe, he could have the lower lobe removed and carry on with his life.” But then doctors found another spot on the opposite rib, which they biopsied, and just before Christmas Tom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. It was shocking because though he had once been a smoker, he had quit 35 years ago. Starting in January, Tom had three rounds of chemo, a CT scan, another round of chemo and a PET scan. Both showed that

the tumor had shrunk. After a three-week break, he endured another series of chemo treatments, and a CT scan detected that the tumor was even smaller. He’s now on a three-month break and will resume chemotherapy in September, which happens to be the same month as the 5th Annual Indianapolis Free to Breathe Run/ Walk 5K. Following her dad’s diagnosis, Kathy, a lifetime runner, did a search to see if there were any races near her that supported lung cancer research. She found one in Fort Harrison State Park on September 24 and sent an email to the event coordinator letting her know that she was interested in volunteering. “I thought maybe I could help out at the water station or something,” says Kathy, who promptly received a response to her email, asking if she would be willing to chair the entire event.

Although she felt a little overwhelmed and underprepared, she agreed because she was passionate about doing something to honor her father and others who suffer from lung cancer. She immediately began brainstorming ways to increase registration. One way she thought she might draw more runners is by adding timing of the 5K for those who want it. She also plans to invite an oncologist to speak to the crowd and hold a one-mile “kids dash” for aspiring younger athletes.

took pulmonary tests to determine if his lungs were strong enough to endure the treatments. He passed with flying colors. Not that this remotely surprised Kathy. “When he had a port put in his shoulder last spring, his first question was, ‘Can I still play golf?’” she recalls. “He goes about his day the way he always did. He’s still got the

Because this marks the event’s 5-year anniversary, Kathy hopes to see registration at or above 500. She knows the camaraderie that exists in the running community because she’s been a part of that community for so long. Years ago, she and her dad ran together in road races in Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee (where her parents once lived). “We used to do a lot of Turkey Trots and Jingle Bell Runs — things like that,” Kathy says. “We’re a sports family.” Kathy and her husband, Todd, their daughters Savannah (21) and Katie (18), and son Colm (12) are all super active, taking part in soccer and gymnastics mostly, though she says her youngest is the real runner in the family. Last year Colm ran Indy’s Mini Marathon in an impressive 1:43. On September 24, Tom plans to walk the Free to Breathe 5K and Savannah will travel home from college to walk beside her grandfather, who, at 77, has yet to slow down. Three mornings a week he rises at the crack of dawn and heads to the gym. He also mows the lawn, works in his backyard and even volunteers to help with construction projects for Habitat for Humanity. DOWN BUT NOT OUT Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

Erika Mulroney had just finished facilitating a class at her church on the evening of June 2, 2016, when she turned down a back hallway of the church, blacked out, and collapsed, face-first, on the floor. Because of the layout of the building, her body was out of the line of sight for most anyone who happened by. Thankfully, a security guard (a person there to lock up) used the restroom near that hallway. When he saw Erika, he immediately rushed to her side, checked for a pulse and panicked. Unable to detect a heartbeat, he ran to find help. “Come quick!” he gasped. “I think Erika may be gone!” “What do you mean gone?” someone asked. “I found her passed out and she’s not breathing!” he said. “I’m not sure if she’s alive.” As it turned out, several of the members who had just taken the evening class had not yet left the building. Two of them were nurses and one was a firefighter. They, along with Erika’s husband, Kirk, raced to perform CPR and administered the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). “They shocked me with the AED equipment once prior to the fire department arriving and again right after they got there,” says Erika, 36. “I was told that several times I flatlined and they lost me — once in the church and again in the ambulance. But both times they got me back.” Ultimately, Erika was transferred to St. Francis Hospital for care where physicians cooled her body to 93 degrees in an effort to preserve her organs and brain for a period of time before bringing her back to normal temperature. Thankfully, Erika handled that

procedure well and didn’t sustain any seizures. She was in ICU and on a respirator for 10 days. On day 17, she had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator put in, and on day 19, she was released to go home. “The astounding thing is that I have minimal, if any, residual damage to my mind,” Erika says. “I have a few memory issues and that frustrates me because I used to be great with people’s names and phone numbers. But I can’t complain. For all intents and purposes, I’m whole and healed.” Her family learned, through results from a blood draw, that Erika had suffered sudden cardiac arrest caused by a small microvascular clot. Beyond that, they really have no answers as to why this incident occurred. All she knows for certain is how grateful she is to be alive, to still be a wife to Kirk and a mother to their 5-year-old son, Brooks. Though he is too young to really understand what happened to his mom a year ago, whenever they drive by St. Francis, he points to the building and says, “That’s Mama’s hospital!” With no heart disease in the family, it really does seem a fluke that Erika would suffer cardiac arrest. Though she, herself, has no way of knowing how long she was unconscious, church surveillance tapes reveal that Mulroney was passed out for 5-7 minutes before anyone noticed her. Her friends, husband and emergency workers then proceeded to work on her for 20 minutes before being loaded in the ambulance. So, the fact that she didn’t suffer brain damage is nothing short of a miracle. “We definitely feel like my survival was a miracle,” Erika says. “God saved my life, and I’m really glad to be here. To say that I am lucky to have survived is an understatement. The fact that I suffered very few mental and physical disabilities after the event is astonishing. I definitely think I am the luckiest Hoosier alive!”

Dimes, Healthy Baby Campaign.

I stoop impatiently by the book-signing table. Waiting my turn. Loaded-down with ever possible book of ‘hers’ I owned. It felt surreal. I had devoured every magazine Martha Stewart had ever published, and now I was going to meet her! This was so very long ago, but it feels like yesterday, that a woman from Connecticut would instill a deep love in me for everything gardening and entertaining.

She said, “Yes!” We raised well over a $125,000 that year for babies in Indiana. I was the Managing Editor for Indianapolis Woman Magazine, we were the title sponsors, and this was my introduction into philanthropy. I was eight months pregnant with Reily, our first, a working Mom and Chris and I were building our first home. Life was busy, and I didn't even have a garden yet.

After that day in Louisville, Kentucky at her lecture and book signing, I contacted her people in New York to ask if Martha would come to Indianapolis and do a fundraiser luncheon for the March of

Our farmer’s markets are full, our days are long and we still have summer nights for entertaining outdoors. Martha Stewart’s book, Entertaining with Martha, is a great reference book for setting a beautiful table outdoors and using what you have growing in the garden for a tremendous dinner party! Hosting a well-put together dinner party is something everyone should do once. Not only did Martha’s books teach me the art of growing fine herbs, making

MUSIC TO REMODELING OUR EARS. ESSENTIALS KITCHEN AND BATH SEMINAR

I, like Martha, believe growing food and sharing it around the family table is a part good living. Sharing our homes with friends, a good meal, freshly baked homemade bread…yes, it is an effort. But oh so worth it! In August my Basil is rampant, a pasta dish with homemade Pesto may be a good call. Or grilling organically raised chicken breast on the grill and topping with homemade herb butter is a perfect accompaniment to a farm fresh salad with Indiana tomatoes. There are tons of Parsley to harvest for topping any dish, and the thyme is flowering now and looks lovely in a fresh fish dish. This is not only the month for our Indiana State Fair participants to show off their homespun magic, but it is a good month for us to gather together and give some serious thanks for this great State of ours. Indiana is abundantly producing some of the best produce in the Nation, get out there and enjoy it!

8 BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIPS FOR PARENTS 4. Set up a bedtime routine which is best for you and your child. Make certain that your child gets plenty of sleep. 5. Don’t forget that all kids need down time just like adults do. So, free play in the evening or after school is essential. 6. Bed time should be set and not open for discussion. Start your child getting ready for bed in plenty of time so that they have time to take a relaxing bath or shower, brush teeth, cuddle and read aloud stories in bed. Having a regular routine, consistent bedtimes and preparing for the next school day helps your child get ready and have less anxiety, 7. Reading aloud to your children is one of the best gifts that you stress and worry. It helps set your child up for success in school by can provide. Being a first and second grade teacher for many years, a parent, and now a pre-school teacher, owner and Director of Education, I have seen firsthand how important it is to provide a consistent, organized and healthy routine for our children. Switching from summer into school schedule can be stressful for families. Although it isn’t easy to start setting the alarm and waking your children earlier than the relaxing hours of summer, we know that all children thrive on consistency.

3. Bookbags should be set by the door ready to go, along with appropriate shoes.

Keep up the hard work, parents. You can do this! You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Lead by example and, as we say at Rainbow Station, “Learn Early, Live Well, and Lead”.

THE PERFECT PITCH FISHERS-BASED BASEBALL TECH COMPANY IS CHANGING THE GAME Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The game of baseball has evolved. Gone are the days of deciding how great a player is by simply looking at their batting average, how many home runs they’ve hit or how many games a pitcher has won. Those numbers certainly still matter, but with the emergence of sabermetrics, teams are diving deeper into advanced analytics to determine the value of players and future value of prospects. With the popularity of MLB’s Statcast data, baseball teams today are much more focused on analytics like exit velocity, launch angle and spin rate. Enter Rapsodo. Rapsodo is a baseball and softball analytics technology company that offers pitch tracking tech. The company’s sales team, made up of six former high school and college ballplayers, resides in Launch Fishers. The small sales team packs a big punch wearing many hats, including extensive

product testing and customer service. The team is led by Seth Daniels, Director of Sales and Marketing for Rapsodo. “As soon as we launched our product in October of 2016, we knew we needed a salesforce support team,” Daniels says. “The entire team is support and sales, and we lead the charge. It is a total group effort. We test the product and software, too. It’s never a bad day when you get to go to the ballpark or batting cages and take hacks.” The company’s CEO, Batuhan Okur, first started Rapsodo with golf in mind. Okur lived in Silicon Valley for 10 years before landing in Singapore where he started a family and continued working on startups. Throughout golf outings and meeting with investors, Okur wanted to improve his golf game but found that the only tech available for such data was doppler radar, which could cost as much as $20,000. Okur decided he could build the same kind of tech for much cheaper, and the golf flight monitor was born. atGeist.com / AUGUST 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 45

From there, baseball was the next logical step to expand the company’s technology. Today, Singapore is home to Rapsodo’s main headquarters, housing the engineering team and actual building process of the product. Daniels, a Pendleton, Indiana native and former ballplayer at Anderson University, got word of Rapsodo in 2015 when a business associate, and investor, suggested that he apply for the sales position. “I had six midnight Skype interviews because of the time difference and a 20hour flight for my final round of interviews,” Daniels says. “That was right when they began the first product development for the alpha testing. We came in and did some of the product integration. There was a lot that we did to help with the baseball terminology and testing. We debuted in January 2016 at the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), and it was a big success. The tech that we have enables our product to be so much cheaper than what is out there. That caught people’s attention.”

Recently, Rapsodo landed a deal with Major League Baseball and USA Baseball to be the ball flight data measurement provider for every single Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) event this year. The PDP is a recent player development initiative created by the MLB commissioner to make player evaluation more inclusive and not cost prohibitive. The MLB wanted a way to standardize the data, too, and that’s where Rapsodo has stepped up to the plate. “We are very excited about this,” Daniels says. “What is really cool is it helps these ballplayers get exposure to the data. They will get a report after the showcase that shows their data and how they stack up with other players. It is a great initiative to help with the education side of things. We are going to get to expose a lot of people to this technology.”

Rapsodo is now in the process of launching its new hitting technology kit as well. The tech will be able to measure launch angle, exit velocity and spin rate giving hitters the ability to evaluate that data and change their swing based on what type of hitter they want to be. “High school kids can get in the cages now and train with our tech and see this data,” Daniels says. “That is really exciting. We use the tool from a development standpoint. The technology gives you the insight to change things. If you are a pitcher, you can change the way you throw to have a higher spin rate. You can literally create your pitches. Swing design will come that way, too. You want your leadoff guy peppering line drives,

Today, more than 20 MLB teams have utilized Rapsodo’s pitch tracking technology. The company didn’t expect to be so popular this early on with MLB teams, because most teams have similar tracking systems already in place. The difference is what they’ve had is much less mobile and portable. Rapsodo’s simple setup system and portability drew teams in quickly. Now, Daniels says, MLB teams can take their technology and software to scouting sessions for high school and college pitchers and can utilize real-time data that appears right in front of them on their iPad or computer as players throw bullpen sessions off the mound. 46 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017 / atGeist.com

not hitting 35-degree launch angles.” For now, Daniels says Fishers will continue to be home for the Rapsodo sales team. Because of all the travelling he does, Daniels says Indianapolis makes a great “central hub” to just about everywhere. As for the future, the company has its longterm goals in place. “In the next 12 months, we will have several new product releases,” Daniels says. “Baseball is just the beginning for us. We will branch out into softball and more golf, too. Things are pointing up, and we are excited about the future. Hopefully, we continue to grow and see good things happen.”

Taking the lead starting in the 2013-2014 school year, Moore has taken the middle school band program from just over 30 members to almost 90 members and led the 7th to 8th grade large ensemble band to a First Place win at the Archdiocese of Indianapolis CYO Music Contest in February.

With such success, it would seem time for Moore to celebrate.

He points out that music is the one thing that transcends all barriers and religions.

“You can go to any country and play music and everyone just gets it,” Moore adds.

offer. By eighth grade, he learned how to play the drums just so he could be in another band. His trademark, though, was the baritone sax, the “bari,” as he calls it.

Moore stood out playing the large brass A musician capable of playing nearly all instrument in an age group that mostly instruments, he shares a passion for music chose the smaller saxophones. atGeist.com / AUGUST 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 49

“Believe it or not, I was a small kid hefting this big bari. I became known as the bari player,” Moore says. Musical talent wasn’t Moore’s only takeaway from junior high band. In fact, Moore borrowed a page from Cole’s teaching songbook. “I modeled my teaching style after David Cole,” he says. “He was like a fun uncle who wants to laugh and joke with you, listen to you if you have an issue that’s bothering you and be that neutral party that’s there for guidance. He showed us that he cared about us as people, and that’s what I try to do.” Moore’s passion for music only grew deeper in High School at Ben Davis. Also a talented football player being scouted by several universities, Moore juggled marching band and football. But during his sophomore year, the school required students participating in football and marching band to make a choice of one over the other. Ultimately, marching band won. “It was an obvious choice. I just had more opportunities with marching band, whereas if I’d chosen football, my career would have likely been short lived,” he says. After high school, Moore enrolled in IUPUI to study Psychology. Moore’s father later passed away and the grief from the loss caused him to get derailed from his goals and pursuing his passion. “I was in a slump and I needed to make

changes,” Moore says. The changes materialized when a friend asked Moore if he’d like to help with the percussion section at Triton Central High School. After a year at the school, the band director urged Moore to return to college and get his degree in music education. She told Moore he was too good not to be a band director. With that, Moore enrolled in Marian University’s music program and got his groove back. After graduation, Moore began working at Lawrence North High School and Ben Davis helping with their saxophone sections. After a year, a friend called telling Moore about an opening for a middle school band teacher at St. Simon. He interviewed with then Principal Donovan Yarnall and didn’t hesitate when he got the job offer. “I’ve never worked at a job where I like and admire every single one of my colleagues,” Moore says. “It’s not work when you can say you enjoy and love what you do.”

The students admire Mr. Moore just as much. Many of his middle band students have had no previous experience with an instrument, but Moore gives the students a chance, the same chance he got in junior high. He also makes the environment fun, and the students are eager to learn quickly. In no time, Moore magically turns these novices in to a harmonious band, ready to play for a school concert. Teaching the kids to learn and appreciate music is only part of Moore’s masterpiece. “Every kid has a special place in my heart. I want to teach them how to be better people, to be disciplined and how to work with others,” he says. “I want them to be happy with themselves, proud of themselves and have a sense of purpose. If I do that, then I’ve succeeded.” To hear the magic of St. Simon Bands, visit their Facebook page at facebook.com/SSABands/.

GAME ON!

STRATAMAX GAMES FOUNDER TALKS SHIFTS IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY

Max Michael is the founder of Stratamax Games.

Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Get in to your closet and pull out your Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, Dungeons and Dragons and Battleship. “It’s the golden age of gaming,” says Max Michael of Stratamax Games. But Michael doesn’t mean video games. In a surprising twist that points to the need for more human interaction, the trend for the 20 something to 40 something age range is toward playing board games and card games. While no one is telling moms and dads globally to start expecting to see their children abandon their Xbox and online games, Michael says there is a shift in adults to go back to the bridge party style traditions of our parents’ generation. “You’re seeing it locally in places like Books and Brews, but it’s caught on globally,” Michael says. He says the trend began with a European gaming invasion about 20 years ago, similar to the British invasion of music 50 years ago.

Hardcore gaming aficionados may be familiar with the difference between American style games and European style games. Most American style games are designed for head-to-head competition with winning the game largely based on luck and chance. But European games are designed for the players to compete for resources with multiple scenarios and solutions possible to win. The European gaming invasion has been made possible largely because of a strategic difference in Europe’s gaming industry. “In Europe, their gaming houses have people who design the games, but they contract out the printing and manufacturing of the game to independent companies,” Michael says.

Michael knows a little about niche games. He started Stratamax Games in 1989, as a part-time hobby. He says he grew up playing a lot of games as a past time, and gaming has always been his hobby. But one day, several years after college graduation, Michael decided to write a book, Max’s Advanced Rules for Axis and Allies. The popular war game capitalized on two of Michael’s other hobbies, history and war. The book’s publication opened up a whole world for Michael. His book got noticed, and eventually he designed and licensed his very first game. Not surprisingly, it was a war game. Michael continued developing his company and feeding his part-time hobby while raising a family and working his full-time job with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in the Emergency Response and Preparedness team. Although he recently retired from the job, he still consults on emergencies part-time.

The business model makes it more cost effective for smaller gaming companies to get their games to market. That means you don’t have to be a giant like Milton Bradley, Through the years, Stratamax Games, has Hasbro or Mattel to get your niche game developed dozens of games including on the store shelves. Airborne Commander, Credit Mobilier and 56 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2017 / atGeist.com

the hit political game, Tammany Hall. Not only has Michael seen Stratamax’s presence in the niche market gaming industry evolve, he’s seen the Indianapolis gaming market evolve. Local shops like Game Preserve, Family Time Games and Saltier Games are all new to the Indy gaming landscape. All shops have friendly and helpful staff and are well stocked with niche market games. Saltier Games even has rooms available for gaming themed birthday parties. Good Games, Australia’s largest game store, just opened a shop downtown Indy. The gaming revolution is unmistakable at the major gaming industry trade shows like Gen Con and Spieltage in Essen, Germany. Gen Con, in Indianapolis, is the gaming industry’s first and longest running gaming convention in the world. Gen Con is so popular that tickets for a four-day pass to the August convention are completely sold out. While gaming fans take front and center at Gen Con dressed in their costumes and playing a variety of interactive games, Spieltage, coming up in October, makes the games the star of the show. The convention, which Michael calls the Oscars of the gaming industry, is a true trade show with exhibits featuring new game releases and booths with the latest in the industry. Most importantly, there are awards including best kids game, best family game and best strategy game. With the boom in the gaming industry, Michael and Stratamax have endless possibilities and opportunities in store for the future. “Playing a game is more than just having fun,” he says. “You learn how to take a turn, take a chance, think critically, use resources to your advantage, how to analyze data and plan ahead.” Catch the gaming craze. Go to stratamaxgames.com for more information about their games. atGeist.com / AUGUST 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 57
