townepost welcomes Neal moore TO TEAM | A note from the Publisher, Tom Britt

st

You’ll notice that this issue of the Geist Community Newsletter is a little bigger than normal. Actually, it’s our biggest issue yet! We have taken this idea of local journalism around the perimeter of Indianapolis with the Geist, Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, and Center Grove Newsletters under the umbrella of the TownePost network. As we grow, we want to dedicate more ink and time to our local communities. To this end, we’ve enlisted the help of veteran news guy and friend Neal Moore. He and I have been talking for the past few years about the new age of hyper local news. Who better to tell you all about the future of our newsletters, websites, apps, and video than our newest TownePost team member, Neal Moore. I’m Neal Moore, the new Local Editorial Manager for the TownePost network of community magazines and websites. I’ve spent 40 years in communications including TV news anchoring and reporting, public relations, video production, and in recent years, writing many stories for atGeist and atFishers. I’m very pleased to join Tom Britt in this new role. I’m going to ask for your involvement with TownePost as we develop new ways and opportunities to tell your stories. But first, some reflections on how we got to where we are today. I was born in 1953, and grew up in the era of three channels on the TV dial (four, if you could watch Popeye and Janie on fuzzy Ch. 4), and a handful of newspapers and radio stations providing local news and information. These media platforms enjoyed remarkable popularity and profits using a “one-to-many” business model. It was content of their making; offered on schedules of their choice; delivered on static, non-interactive devices. Such was the mid-century media landscape. Ironically, during the same years that I delivered newspapers and dreamt of being a radio disk jockey, the U.S. government and academic researchers were noodling with the first iteration of what would become today’s Internet.

You might have noticed that the Internet (and the World Wide Web that it spawned) turned the media business on its collective head. Amidst the fallout were the evolution of citizen journalism and the ability to deliver hyper-local content. Such is the media landscape today. That’s what makes TownePost tick – news, information, storytelling – all of it laser-focused on the communities, neighborhoods, even streets where we live, and much of it generated by local residents. As publisher Tom Britt puts it, “There’s no news that’s too small”, and I agree. We want to know what’s happening in your world, and to understand what your interests are. We encourage you to share your stories, photos, videos, news tips, ideas and suggestions so that we, in turn, can share them with the thousands of readers, web surfers and advertisers in Geist and Fishers. Finally, I’m looking for skilled writers to join the TownePost team. If you’re interested in researching and writing local stories, and have a flair for great storytelling, contact me by email, neal@atGeist.com. All writing styles and experience levels are welcome. Together, let’s continue sharing stories about Geist and Fishers that reflect just how terrific our communities are, and what great places they are to live.

Vicky Andritsch Celebrating the Gift of Mother’s Day | Janet C. Striebel This year, 41 magnificent moms were nominated for the 2013 Geist Mom of the Year Contest. From this pool, five finalists were chosen and featured online where viewers could vote for their favorite mom via www.atGeist.com website. Though all the contestants were worthy of winning, only one mom pulled ahead at the last moment to win this very close race—Vicky Andritsch. Vicky was nominated twice, once by Dean and Amy Hershman and also by her husband, Todd Andritsch. Together, Todd and Vicky have five children ranging from kindergarten to college age. Their eldest, Jack (18) is studying at Clemson University. Grace (15) is a freshman at HSE High School. Audrey (12) is a sixth grader at FCI. Luke (9) is in third grade at Geist Elem. Finally, Ava (who just turned 7) is a kindergartner at Geist Elem. These five siblings are known for having an unusually close relationship with each other. But then again, they do have a special mother who wraps her strength, wisdom, and love into every facet of this familial unit.

explains, “Ava is our test drive on how to handle stress. She’s truly a gift of God and has overcome so many obstacles. She managed to cross every milestone with flying colors.” One year later, during church service on Mother’s Day, Vicky was holding Ava (now 1 yr. old) in her arms reminiscing back on her first year with her, watching her defy all odds by sitting up, crawling, talking and walking. She adds, “The emotions were overwhelming thinking back of what the past year had held and all that we learned about life.” She felt so thankful for her baby’s health and developments. Yet, she felt a wrenching feeling in her stomach for her son, Luke, (3 yrs.) who didn’t attend church that day. He stayed at home with his dad. Luke had been complaining of intense ear pain the day before and was diagnosed with a double ear infection. Two days later, life would change its course forever for this close-knit family. They learned that Luke had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and that their little boy would have to undergo chemotherapy every day for the next three and one-half years. She recalls, “Luke’s days of digging in the dirt and skinning his knees came to a roaring halt.”

“Everyone has a story to tell,” says Vicky as she smiles proudly sporting her athletic apparel (she was up at dawn training for her next triathlon.) “I’m just so grateful to have this chance to tell mine.” During our interview, I learned what makes her so remarkable.

Mother’s Day Gone Awry, Two Years in a Row

When Ava, her youngest child, was just four weeks old, she was diagnosed with a level three brain hemorrhage near the core of her brain. On Mother’s Day weekend, Ava underwent surgery to have a shunt inserted which would help drain spinal fluid from the brain to the belly. The doctors warned that she may never be able to walk or talk and that they would have to wait to see the effects of her condition. Vicky

Vicky holds her youngest, Ava, who was diagnosed with a level three brain hemorrhage at four weeks of age. A friend gave Vicky the prayer stone (shown here) that she carries with her every day. MAY 2013

“Our family has been strong from the beginning,” says Vicky. “I can see how families fall apart with this kind of stress. When one member is diagnosed with cancer, it becomes a journey the entire family embarks on.” She recalls embracing her family during this time of crisis, “Guys, we have felt this devastation before with Ava. We made it through and look at her now. Luke needs us. He can’t do it alone. We have to do this together.”

Flashbacks of Comforting Love

Her head was fine but she broke her leg and had to wear a hipto-toe cast for months. Luke drew pictures for her and was so excited to be in a caretaker position for someone else for once. “There were countless times during treatment I wondered how much more could come our way. And then I would feel a sense of calm and peace. These were the moments when I knew God had this all under control and we just needed to keep pushing forward, with faith,” Vicky says, with a smile.

Turning the Curve to Make a Difference Although Luke was in remission after only five days of At the conclusion of Luke’s first year of grueling treatment, intense treatment, he endured the next three years of his life battling the effects of his chemotherapy. Rhythm Pax was created as a result of Luke’s “Ava was our sunshine who brought laughter and joy into our world. She was the bright spot in our day. Fortunately, because she was so young, she didn’t understand everything that was going on,” says Vicky. There was a period when Luke had been so sick that he hadn’t raised his head off the pillow for two weeks. Then one day, he finally lifted his head and asked to watch Veggie Tales. Ava was so thrilled to see her older brother show interest in something that she began doing her happy dance, wiggling on the bed. Suddenly, she fell off in slow motion Vicky recalls. “I was praying she wouldn’t hit her head because of her shunt, as I saw her twirling in the air.” 12

own experience of discovering happiness through playing an instrument. When Vicky introduced Luke to bongo drum lessons during his treatment, she and Todd couldn’t believe how “at peace” Luke felt at the end of each lesson. Vicky recalls a time when Luke once said to her, “’Mom, you know how lucky I was that I got cancer out in five days? I know others aren’t that lucky and I want them to feel the way I do when I play music.’” The goal for Team Luke is that every child diagnosed with cancer will receive a Rhythm Pax. Vicky is currently in the beginning stages of writing a book with her family which

Their dream has always been to share their experiences in hopes of helping others. With ongoing fundraising and awareness, they hope to make this dream a reality. In addition, Vicky is a board member for Vines for Life, an annual wine tasting event benefiting three charities. This is another avenue that focuses to raise money for Team Luke. Yet, her energy doesn’t stop here. She is a participant of the Indiana chapter of Team In Training, an organization that trains people to participate in marathons, half marathons, and triathlons to raise money for Leukemia &Lymphoma Society (LLS.) She also supports Pennies for Patients (with the help of her kids), speaks at engagements at Riley and LLS, and organizes blood drives at New Hope Church.

The Motivation behind Her Stamina “We feel passionate about helping LLS and Riley because of the way they took care of us in our darkest days,” says Vicky, who has raised over $70,000 for Team In Training so far. She has run in races across the country from Disney, in Orlando, to San Francisco. She admits, “Running became my therapy to get through the tough times. On a good day, I am able to get

my workouts done early in the morning before anyone wakes up and see some amazing sunrises while I’m at it. During Luke’s treatment, these sunrises were always reassurance to me that we were not alone in this battle.” “When I am at that tough point in a race and I start thinking, ‘what am I doing?’ I am always quick to think about all that Luke, our family and others have gone through when dealing with cancer,” says Vicky who began training one year into Luke’s treatment. She has since co-founded Triple Threat Indiana, a group that organizes endurance training for triathletes supporting LLS. “The best part of any race is the finish line when I get to see my family. I get to see those smiling faces cheering me through. The proudest of all is my husband, Todd. He is my rock.” Even though Vicky has had some unfortunate Mother’s Days in the past, she still is proud to celebrate this special day with her family. She says, “I’ve had lots of people say to me, ‘don’t you dread Mother’s Day?’ but actually I love this day. I look at all the blessings that have come to us through our trials. It will be a gift for Todd and me to watch our kids grow up. They MAY 2013

have taught me so much about being a mom. I believe these kids were meant to be mine and I am lucky to be their mom.” As we conclude our interview, I say goodbye to this strong woman who exudes an unusual energy about her as she speaks. Her bubbly, upbeat personality represents a most positive inspiration to all who are lucky enough to get to know her. What admires me most about her is that she never once talked about herself but rather her family and her goals for wanting to help ease the pain for others.

Mom of the Year Nominees Amy Coughlin Nominated by Alexis Coffer

In May 2008, my mother was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer. She faced it head on and never lost her positive spirit. The next year at the age of 23, I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. She became my rock, and the only one who truly understood what I was going through. At this time she became more than just my Mom, or my caregiver, she became my best friend. One might even call us “breast buds.” I believe she should be recognized for her achievement not only overcoming her own battle, but helping me with mine.

Angie Sutton Nominated by Sarah Gipson

Angie is a wonderful SAHM mom to her two children. In addition, she watches my daughter each day after school. She is patient, kind, and most of all, fun. She helps all three learn and have fun with their homework. She also volunteers at school. Any time I need her in a pinch, she does not hesitate to help. Angie is very deserving of “Mom of the Year”!

Chalene Braun Nominated by Kassie Braun

My mom is the best mom in the world. Everyone says that, but she really is. She has 4 kids, and one of them plays year-round lacrosse and another plays spring lacrosse. All of us go to different schools and she is constantly driving us around EVERYWHERE! My dad works out of town a lot and when he is home he is basically 22/7 working. She has 16

For all of you who nominated your mom, sister, neighbor, or friend, thank you!

to do mostly everything on her own and she is constantly dealing with us kids and all of our craziness. One of my brothers has severe mental disorders as well as me, and she puts up with it all. I can’t explain the countless hours she spends taking us all to doctors appointments, sports games, and friends’ houses. She does more for us than any other mom I know. Besides all the attention she gives us, she also has taught us all very valuable life lessons. For example, I know her whole credit card number, can pay bills, make dinner, make returns, fix things, go to the pharmacy, and the list goes on. I will be completely prepared to go out on my own in a few years because of her. She is the most outgoing mom I know and she is a social butterfly. There’s not a thing you can’t love about her. My mom is my best friend too. I can trust her with anything. She doesn’t judge or gossip about people because she is such an amazing person. Her confidence can’t be beat. My mom deserves to be the Mom of the Year. She is one of a kind and the absolute best mom anyone could ever have.

Cindy Miner Nominated by Mike Miner

Cindy is a perfect role model for moms and for myself. She is, I pray, a typical mom who goes non-stop taking care of her family, serving at her church, cultivating her friendships and making me feel so loved. True love is not boastful, but is shown by our actions. Cindy’s actions everyday, whether it is working from home with sick kids, making dinner for a hurting friend or teaching me the importance of celebrating special moments, makes her my example of what a mom should be.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR NOMINATIONS! Colleen Laughlin

Deanna Kania Totto

Let’s start by saying my mom, Colleen Laughlin, has birthed nine children. Yes, willingly and lovingly, she’s brought nine kids into this world. But this is a rare case of both quantity AND quality -- because while my mom has always had a houseful, she makes each and every one of us feel special. We’re greeted with a hug and a smile (even if she currently loves us but doesn’t like us), and she never fails to amaze us with her selflessness. Oh, and she runs her own interior decorating business… in her “spare time.” As if all this was not enough, in December of 2012, my mom became a first-time grandma. While most would scoff at helping raise yet another child, she’s looking forward to babysitting little Naomi Marie full-time while my sister works. How’s that for inspiring? Colleen Laughlin for mom of the year!

Deanna is my daughter-in-law. She is a professor of pharmacy at Purdue University in Lafayette and is a preceptor of Pharmacy at the VA Hospital. Deanna is very active in our church, Holy Spirit @ Geist. She is in the choir, head of the childrens choir, chairman of the Bible school, and Goast. She and her husband Brian have three children, Alaina (13), Alex (10) and Braede (7). Deanna always, always has time for her children no matter how busy she is. She helps them with their homework and all other activities. Deanna gives from the heart and is happy to help.

Nominated Kimberly

Danielle Palmer Nominated by Aimee Daniels-Goodwin

The “MOTY” is absolutely my sister! Danielle, is the most generous, caring and wonderful mom anyone could have! I am her younger sister by 7 years. Due to our family dynamics, she always served a big hand in being a mother as well to me. With the motherly instinct that is so innate in her, she went on to being a mother of 4 wonderful daughters, with her husband Derek. Their 4 girls ages range from 7-15 years old. They are all straight-A students, and each are excelling in extracircular activities, gymnastics, soccer, dance, theatre, piano and guitar, etc. Each of the girls has been awarded at school and in different activities for their exceptional behavior. Danielle is an amazing teacher and has a gift of patience, patience and more patience! She volunteers at each of the girl’s school, serves as treasurer at the girl’s gymnastics and is always offering to help anyone that needs it. She is the heart of our family functions, due to her planning skills and her belief in the importance of spending time with family. I strive in my own life, to be the mother and person she is. I honestly ask her what and how she does certain things with her girls, so she can teach me to be a better mother. I am nominating my sister because she takes little time, if any, to pamper herself. Her family always comes first, and she loves it that way, but she needs a much needed “thank you for all you do!” in my opinion.

Nominated by Kaye Totton

Debbie Thomas Nominated by Ali Thomas

Being the best mom means spending every minute of the day providing for your kids, making them laugh in the ER even when you find out you have to have surgery, being strong in the midst of financial difficulties, and being willing to give the clothes of your back to your children. My mom doesn’t get to spend time for herself. She is a single mom and spends most of her time working and driving kids to practices, rehearsals, and spending all day at competitions. I don’t know how she does it. She truly cares about our futures and does above and beyond to make sure we are growing up in a nurtured way. She loves us so much and works extremely hard to give us everything with what little we have. I am blessed to have a mom who does all these things and I wish she knew how much she is appreciated and how much her 5 kids love her. Also nominated by Jesse Thomas My mom is the strongest and most loving person I know. She is a single mother of 5 children whom she raised with love and discipline. She taught me everything I know about being a good person and being the person God wants me to be. She is my hero and I only hope I can grow up to be half the person that she is.

Erica Flores

Julie has taken her mission to others by caring for other familes children during the day.

Nominated by Gary Flores

Despite her full-time job as an insurance agent, Erica finds the time to take care of our 3 girls, ages 8,6 and 8 months! She is actively involved in all their after-school activities, including swimming 3 days/week, gymnastics and Girl Scouts! She is non-stop! She regularly volunteers at the girl’s schools and finds the time to join them equally for lunch. I can’t think of a better mom more suited for this title!

Julie Lantz

Nominated by Mackenzie Lantz My mom is a mother of five and she is amazing at it. It may be difficult but somehow she makes it all work. Also nominated by Mike Lantz No one has a bigger heart for kids than Julie. Julie is the mother of 5 kids, ages 13, 12, 11, 10 and 8. She is the rock of our family and is always looking for ways to develop, educate and care for our children. One of her motto’s is her desire to teach our kids how to be productive, successful contributors to society. As all of our children are in school,

Also nominated by Sara Lou Lantz Julie is a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, and friend. Mother of 5 ages 8 to 13, she is a super supportive wife to husband Mike, who works long hours and travels, and makes time for their date nights. She spends time with each of her children both as a family and one-on-one. She volunteers at their schools, supports them in their sports and activities, and sees that they’re where they need to be on time. She helps others by caring for their children during the day, being a good listener, and a great member of the family. She serves the Lord through Heartland Church and with Under the Bridge assisting the homeless. I consider Julie Lantz to be the Mom of the Year!

Kara Casavan Nominated by Jeremiah Casavan

My wife is an amazing mother. She works full time for DCS. Our son has a serious medical condition called Mitochondrial Disease. She works tirelessly making sure he has as normal a childhood as possible, which takes more than I could explain in under 100 words. She makes

it a priority to make sure our daughter doesn’t lose any opportunities due to our son’s condition. On top of all the medical stuff for our son, she still makes time to do regular mom things with both kids, reading stories, playing games, crafts, etc. She never does anything for herself.

Kim McDonald Nominated Brian McDonald

My wife is a wonderful mother for our four children. She works a full-time job and manages to keep our family organized. She also makes the time to volunteer for many of the kids’ activities. She’s a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout committee chair, Friends of Scouting chair, Read Up Tutor, and is involved with United Way, KIB, 4-H, the kids’ three schools/schoolwork, and their various sports. Everything she does in her spare time revolves around kids. She also helps care for her mother in a nursing home. She doesn’t complain about not having time for herself.

Lora Koepper Nominated by her son, Stephen Koepper At nearly 103 years old, my mother has been the best mom there is for all of my nearly 69 years. I am sure that my

older brother and sister agree, as well as her 8 grandchildren and 18 living great-grandchildren. She has been a wonderful example of Christian living for those around her--in the community and at her church. Although her advanced years have robbed her of most of her eyesight and hearing, she remains positive and is daily thankful for all of her many blessings.

Lisa Holverson Nominated by Brent Holverson

Lisa Holverson is the “Supermom” of our wonderful 5-year-old, Sierra Blu, and our newest member to the fam 4-month-old, Sage Berkeley. Not only does she have a fulltime job, but she also manages not to miss a single event for Sierra, goes on all of her field trips, gets the girls ready each morning, takes them to Learning Time daycare, cooks for all of us, cleans up after all of us, does fun playtime stuff at home, takes girls to all sports activities and on and on! She does this all with the biggest smile and most amazing attitude you can imagine! She is the most amazing mother I have ever known (and all mothers are amazing to some extent)!

Lisa Lasher

Nominated by her husband, Brian I am nominating my wife as the mom of the year for several reasons. First, she has a health issue that only affects one in a million people. This special lady in my life NEVER complains for what she does. Her attitude is that it’s a part of life - just deal with it and move on - life’s too short. Lisa just loves to take care of her family and church. Second, our two kids have health issuses that she has to deal with every day. Our daughter who is 16 has been in and out of Riley Hospital for the last couple of years at periods of time from one to two weeks. Lisa stays with her while she is in there. My wife never complains about being out there. When our son, who is 12, needs something, she always stops what she is doing to take care of him. Her father suffers from

dementia and he is gettng worse. She also is a caregiver so she goes to his apartment which is about 20 minutes away every day. While she is there, she makes him breakfast, prepares him a sandwich for lunch, makes sure he has taken his medicine, and cleans his place. She is also very active in our church. The passion and love she has for kids is awesome. She serves on our Children’s Ministries Team. She has been our VBS director for the last six summers. This summer will be her seventh summer leading us during a long, hard, awesome week. On Sunday mornings, she serves as a Sunday School teacher for the elementary kids. Then she also is the Sunday School superintendent. There are also things she does around the church to help out and does all of this without being asked. This is why I think she deserves to be Mom of the Year. I hope you agree with me.

Loralei Campbell Nominated by Alison

I am an only child and my parents and I lived in Muncie, Indiana. I moved here after college and while I was pregnant with my 4th child (my oldest then was 5!), my dad retired and my parents moved to Indy! Not only did they move here, but they moved in 5 minutes down the road! She provides me unlimited support and love. She adores her grandchildren and often times asks to watch all 4 at once. She doesn’t wan to miss a single moment of their lives! She provided me the same love and devotion growing up. I know this move wasn’t the easiest for her, but she did it without regret and with total mother sacrifice. She is the true definition of a beautiful mother on the inside and out. If my children ever say that I am just like grandma then I know I will have become a great mom!!! She is my true hero. She is my mom!

Michele Dowless Nominated by James Dowless

My wife and I opened up a restaurant in Fortville back in May of 2011. She holds a full time job at Eli Lilly and works part time at our restaurant as the Pastry Chef and part time bookkeeper. We have three children ages 14, 12 and 10. Michele works tirelessly taking care of our children as well as all her other responsibilities. She sees our children off to school in the morning before driving to work and sometimes making pitstops to Kroger for items needed at the restaurant. After work, Michele stops and shops for the restaurant Mon-Fri at the restaurant depot. Putting all items on a flat cart by herself and loading them into her vehicle to deliver them to the restaurant. The items she gets from the RD are very big, bulky and heavy. 35# containers of fry oil, cases of tomatoes for sauce, 50# bags of flour and sugar and so on. She also takes our sons to boyscouts once a week. When our sons are playing Lacrosse, she takes them to practice and waits for them to finish. She also takes our daughter to her horseback riding lesson twice a week and many more little things she does like keeping the house clean, laundry, making lunches, helping the kids with school projects as well homework. Not to mention keeping our chickens and dogs well fed and cared for. We chop firewood for our fire place as well. Michele does all these things for our children, restaurant and myself and never, ever complains about how hard the work is or how tired she is. She never really does much for herslef because she is either to tired or she is simply sacrificing for someone else. She is truly an amzing woman and my hero! Forgive my jumping around. I’m at the restaurant and I wanted to write this quickly before we get busy. Thank you for considering her for Mom of the Year!

Rebecca Perry Nominated by her daughter, Kathryn

My mom never fails to exceed my expectations and needs. I often come home from school in a bad mood and she is always there to cheer me up or put me in my place if I give her an attitude. Recently, we discovered that my mom has skin cancer, dimentia, and ADHD. Even when fighting her own battles, she puts on a strong face while she works three jobs to support our family. She acts tough for our sake but she is going through a lot. My mom should receive this award because she always puts our minor problems before her major ones and that’s hard to do when she has four children to care for.

Tammy Gilbert

I feel that my wife should be nominated as mother of the year because our 2-year-old daughter has alot of medical problems and my wife keeps this whole family and household together, even though she has to run all over to take our daughter to different specialist appts or take our 4-year-old to pre-school or speech therapy at the elementary school. She always has a smile on her face and truly dedicates her time and life to our two beautiful daughters. I am so thankful to have her as my wife and the mother to our children!

She can do anything from french braiding hair to playing a game of softball. When she’s not working, she usually spends hours outside listening to the birds while planting flowers. Thanksgiving is the time of year our whole family gets together, and my mom opens up our home to everyone. It’s perfect for gatherings because it’s an old farm house that my mom has turned into something from the colonial era. She has great style that she implements into everything, but forgets to take time for herself.

Valerie is a wonderful mother of four beautiful children, and has dedicated her life daily to make her family run successfully. She is the most understanding mother, wife, and friend. She also is active in her church, the community, and raises money for charity events. Physically she pushes herself to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where she competes in a 100 mile ride around Lake Tahoe. She is a real inspiration to me because I am expecting a child in April. I hope to be able to have the balance, patience, and courage this woman invokes in every aspect of her life.

The Garrison Law Firm brings together professionals with more than 100 years of experience in several important areas of law. In their private lives, the brothers really do share a wonderful sense of humor and strong interests in history, horses, sports, reading, and spending time together as a family. It is obvious they enjoy their time together and support each other in their individual areas of legal expertise.

The Brothers … Greg Garrison, the attorney, is indeed an experienced litigator (on both sides of the courtroom) and has prosecuted a number of high-profile criminal cases. Currently, his practice is concentrated on personal injury law, business and commercial trial work, and general litigation. It goes without saying he is also a highly recognized, long-time radio talk show host with WIBC and because of this high public profile, we sometimes forget he is a very busy and engaged successful attorney as well. Looking for YourI I t r a P Core? | Tracey Meister

Tips: • Use a mirror or a workout buddy to keep your form in check! These exercises are meant to activate and strengthen core muscles. However, using improper form can turn the most clinically proven exercise into a damaging mistake! • Keep your spine in a neutral position (natural arch – not flattened, rounded, or overly arched) while performing the exercises. As always, please consult your doctor before starting a new exercise routine, especially if you have a history of back issues.

McGill Curl Up

I have been on a mission; I’ve searched high and low to find effective and safe core strengthening exercises (safe when using the proper form and barring no major existing medical issues). Part 2 describes my findings – exercises designed by Stuart McGill, professor of spinal biomechanics at the University of Waterloo, Ontario*, to challenge the core without placing undo stress or load on the spinal cord. If you didn’t get to read “Looking for your CORE? – Part 1” in the February issue, here are the highlights: • The core complex includes most of the muscles between the chin and thighs, front and back, not just the abdominals. • The job of the core complex is to protect your spinal cord and organs, and to allow you to stand and sit upright. A strong core complex also enables you to perform daily and athletic activities with power. Imagine the energy it takes an athlete to sprint, stop, and prepare his or her body to catch or hit a speeding ball. Then, in a split second, he or she has to move that ball in a different direction requiring several core complex muscles that tighten or stiffen just before kicking or hitting a ball with a racket or bat. The core complex captures energy, then allows the power to be transferred to the object or task being performed. • One of the safest ways to increase the strength and endurance of the core muscles is to perform exercises that allow the spine to remain in a neutral position while bracing the core muscles. Bracing your core means to tighten the core complex like you are expecting to be hit in the stomach with a ball. Repeatedly flexing the spine with added load (resistance or weight) increases the potential of damage over time. Flexing the spine without load is encouraged for range of motion as demonstrated in the “Cat/Camel” movement below: 26

Geist_May_2013.indd 26

“Curl up” is a deceiving name as the back is not curling; instead, it is lifting up during this move as you brace or tighten your core abdominals and back muscles. 1. Lay on a mat with one leg straight on the ground and the other leg bent with the foot on the ground. 2. Place hands, palm-side down, under the arch of your lower back. Lock or tighten the abdominals (do not “suck in” the abs). 3. While maintaining the natural arch in your back and keeping your head and neck neutral, lift only your shoulders off the ground. More difficult: Lift your elbows off the ground at the same time as your shoulders.

Get on your hands and knees. 1. Place your hands slightly wider than your shoulders and place your knees directly under your hips or slightly wider. Don’t sit back on your hips. 2. While maintaining the natural arch in your back and keeping your head neutral, slowly straighten your arm and opposite leg making sure not to lift either one higher than your body; hold this position for 3 seconds. 3. Now sweep your hand and foot back to the floor; without resting, return to Bird Dog position while being mindful not to shift your weight or lift your hand or foot higher than your back. 4. Repeat 5–10 times, and then switch sides. More difficult: Draw a square in the air simultaneously with your lifted hand and foot, keeping your elbow and knee locked and moving only your arm and leg. Note: There is movement only in the shoulder and hip joint, not in your back or neck. I see a lot of people incorporating plank variations in their workouts. But ‘Plankers’ beware! Using improper form can lead to negative consequences. So please, please pay attention to form. Position your elbows directly under your shoulders; keep hips perpendicular to the floor and maintain a neutral curve in your lower back (not arched in either direction).

Chef Kyle prepares food donated by Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill along with donations from other Geist area restaurants to feed approximately 200 people at their monthly “Supper with a Friend”.

Eddy’s Gives Back in a Delicious Way | Pat Carlini Many of us know Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill as the laid-back neighbood hangout but, to another community, they mean a whole lot more. Each month, Eddy’s plans a feast for a couple hundred people and arranges for food and donated items to be delivered to a downtown church for a community in need. It may be one of the best-kept secrets around here, but for those at the Immanual Church of Christ on Prospect Street, it is one of the most popular events throughout the year. It is called “Supper with a Friend” night, designed to help community residents struggling to make ends meet at month’s end. Dave Stringer of Eddy’s grew up in the neighborhood and started the monthly 30

The food is prepared on site in the church kitchen and served up in a community room. “We do a lot of comfort food,” says Dave. “Something that will stay with them for a while.”

On the day I went along to visit “Supper with a Friend" night, more than 200 men, women, and children turned out for the meal. Chef Kyle of Eddy’s was on hand to cook and serve up more than 60 pounds of mashed potatoes, 40 plus pans of chicken and noodles, and even dessert of pudding and pies. It was certainly a feast enjoyed by all. On this night, Pucinni’s also pitched in, donating a giant pan of pasta. Church Pastor John Gannt was also on hand, greeting the guests as they came in. never pull up a chair for a meal at Eddy’s in Geist, but they can tell you how much they appreciate the hot meal once a month. As one gentleman told me on the way out, “It was an awful long walk here tonight, but the food is certainly worth it.” Congratulations to Eddy’s for a job well done! contributions and loss of firefighters and EMT personnel. The council’s primary responsibility is fiscal in nature. The council is ultimately responsible to pass a balanced budget that provides specific parameters on expenditures that are aligned with revenue projections. When tax revenue does not come in as projected, the administration’s role is to review any and all areas where expenses can be reduced while also looking for new sources of revenue.

Lawrence Council Update | Tom Shevlot, Council President The first quarter of 2013 has been very busy for the council. We began the year with a report from the controller that the city’s projected tax receipts were going to fall short of budgeted expectations. This is significant given that approximately 80% of Lawrence government’s expenses are primarily in public safety. Our fire and police departments have performed their duties very well in spite of reductions in their pay by way of pension

The council does have some authority with passing resolutions that can be specific to generating incremental revenue. Once such measure was to pass a resolution that diverted traffic citations away from the Indianapolis traffic court to the Beech Grove court system. Using existing data from the previous year, providing the same number of citations written in 2012 occur in 2013, this should generate over $200,000 in revenue to the city. This was passed early in the year, so the council is expecting to see revenue from this action to be reflected in our budget very soon. The 2012 budget passed in 2011 ended approximately $700,000 in the red. The city is required to pass a balanced budget; however, as a result of a shortfall in tax revenue, and expenses not being aggressively reduced, the council had limited choices in bringing the 2012 budget to balance. As a result,

the council passed a resolution moving funds from our non-reverting rainy-day fund to cover this deficit. The city is seeing some economic development growth with several new businesses opening in the first six months of 2013. The Redevelopment Commission plays a vital role in providing a climate for economic development. The RDC has several ambitious goals to improve Pendleton Pike and surrounding areas. The first was to maximize the INDOT renovation of Pendleton Pike to improve its appearance. The second goal was to develop the 92-acre vacant drive in site. The third goal was to attract investment to the redevelopment district and areas adjacent to it. The fourth goal was to decrease the number of lessthan-desirable businesses. The fifth goal was to soften Pendleton Pike by adding landscaping, art, and an entrance feature. The sixth goal was to have the district be more transit oriented. The seventh goal was to improve the connectivity of the trails and sidewalks along Pendleton Pike to the rest of Lawrence and Indianapolis. The eighth goal was to improve public safety. The common council meets on the first Monday of every month at the Lawrence Government Center. Additionally, all committee meetings are also held in the Keller Room at the Government Center. A list of council meetings and committee meetings is posted on the city’s website, www.cityoflawrence.org.

fishers hospital gets a new name | Neal Moore In 1881 the Daughters of Charity arrived in Indianapolis with hearts full for Christian service and pockets decidedly empty. The nuns’ collective “wealth” was $34.77. They had come at the request of Bishop Francis Silas Chatard to operate a Catholic hospital in Indiana. The Bishop gave them $50 more to begin their mission: converting an abandoned seminary into a hospital. Slowly, across the decades, the hospital expanded both its physical footprint and caring touch in the city. One can only imagine the wonder with which these humble servants would view today’s St.Vincent hospital system. The latest iteration is the newly-named St.Vincent Fishers Hospital, which opened full services April 8, at 13861 Olio Road. “Our name change reflects our expansion from a freestanding outpatient healthcare facility to an expanded inpatient hospital,” explained Gary Fammartino, administrator, St.Vincent Fishers Hospital. “We listened to the community, and our expansion has been guided by what families in Fishers, Noblesville and surrounding areas told us they wanted most.” The 110,000-square-foot, 50-bed hospital expansion is focused on wellness, women’s health and family health and includes: 30 medical/surgical beds, 10 labor-deliveryrecovery-post-partum beds, and 10 observation beds. The expansion complements an existing emergency department, surgery department, all-digital imaging center, primary care offices, pediatric specialists, physical therapy and an adult and pediatric sleep lab. Hospital leadership had anticipated such an expansion when St.Vincent initially located in Fishers. “We began serving this community in 2008 with the first freestanding emergency department and comprehensive outpatient services,” said 34 geist C O M M U N I T Y N E W S L E T T E R | M A Y 2 0 1 3 Geist_May_2013.indd 34

Fammartino. “Our goal back then was to eventually expand upon these services to include inpatient care when our community determined it was time.” According to information provided by the hospital, the facility offers many spa-like amenities “because that’s what today’s patients expect.” St.Vincent Fishers has applied for LEED certification (an environmental design designation) with the aim of providing patients, visitors and others with a healthier environment. Kim Nealon, chief nursing officer, noted the special attention given to St.Vincent Fishers’ labor-delivery and recovery rooms. “Included in a single room are a pull-down Murphy bed, a walk-in shower, and spa tubs that are available for labor and postpartum recovery. Our Center for Women and Infants, and medical-surgical suites are supported by in-house physicians 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Nealon said. The new facility provides 24-hour room service for patients, a cafeteria with indoor-outdoor dining, and a chapel and spiritual family waiting area that are “integral to our hospital’s faith-based values system,” explained Nealon. Fammartino emphasized that St.Vincent Fishers continues to devote a substantial portion of its budgets for charity care and community benefit locally, regionally and internationally in keeping with the tradition of St. Vincent de Paul. “Our hospital’s mission is to treat all persons with special attention to the poor and vulnerable,” said Fammartino. “Our core values of service to the poor, reverence, integrity, wisdom, creativity and dedication are the foundation of who we are and what our communities have come to know as the Spirit of Caring.” More information about St.Vincent Fishers is available online at fishers.stvincent.org.

Susan G. Komen Ambassador and breast cancer survivor Julie Hollis poses in her floral workshop with her fiance Chie Kramer.

Geist Breast Cancer Survivor Offers Hope | Pat Carlini Geist resident and breast cancer survivor, Julie Hollis, has a lot to look forward to this Spring! The small business owner (Julie’s Flowers at Geist) who handles custom flower arrangements for weddings, is now – planning a wedding of her own in June! But for this single mom of two, her future didn’t always look so bright. About a year ago, Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer after finding a lump during a self exam at the age of 38. “It was horrifying,” says Julie. “One minute you are feeling fine and the next minute, your whole world changes.” Julie’s neighbor, Chie Kramer, — who is now her fiancé — had known Julie for a short time and says the news was a lifechanging experience. 42

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_May_2013.indd 42

“We went from living life, enjoying kids, arguing about normal things – to big changes…something really important arose.” That “important something” was Stage 3 cancer in the breast, and it had spread to other parts of her body. Suddenly, there were biopsies, surgeries, and chemotherapy. She lost her hair and spent days in bed. But Julie decided to stay strong and throw herself into her flower business to keep her mind off things. Then, the outpouring of support surprised her. “People from all over came to help,” says Julie. “We handled about two dozen weddings during that time, which is just amazing!” says Julie who still gets a tear in her eye just talking about it. “They energized me and my kids. Thirteen-year-old Justin and 15-year-old Heather learned a life lesson of how people pull together in time of need. Most of Julie’s cancer was surgically removed from her body, but, there’s no guarantee it won’t come back. Julie remains positive about the future and enjoys working with flowers as well as spending time with her family and pets – especially “Jules” – her fiancé’s golden lab who kept a constant vigil by her side when she was bedridden. Julie served as the ambassador for the Susan G. Komen

walk last month and says she continues talking to groups, encouraging women to watch for changes in their bodies and know their risk factors, because early detection is so important. Today, Julie’s flower business is steadily growing as is her positive outlook for the future as a breast cancer survivor, one day at a time.

ABOUT THE RACE The Geist Half Marathon Inc. is an Indiana non-profit corporation organized to inspire health and wellness in the children surrounding Geist Reservoir in Indianapolis, Indiana. Working closely with the greater Geist community, the Geist Half Marathon raises funds to benefit physical fitness programs being jointly implemented within the schools. Last year’s race was sold out with 6,000 registered participants raising money for the Geist area schools. SCHOOL PROGRAM INFORMATION St.Vincent Geist Half Marathon is excited to have the opportunity to work with area schools again this year to promote this fun and healthy event to children. The St.Vincent Geist Half Marathon school program, and the far reaching benefits it brought to the over 1,800 youth who participated, is an aspect of last year’s event that we are most proud of. We are working to expand upon this success so as to continue to support the Foundations efforts to combat the growing problem of childhood obesity. To date, the Geist Half Marathon, Inc. has donated $236,767 to Geist area schools in just five years.

Vince Auten Geist Half Founding Board

Member Reflects on First Six Years | J. Andy Murphy Vince Auten remembers the sweet sound of the starter’s gun going off to start the first Geist Half Marathon back in 2008. It sent chills down his spine and relief to his shoulders as he watched the 4,500 runners take off. It all started one day when his wife told him about a posting in the Geist Community Newsletter regarding a meeting to start a race in the Geist area. Vince is a dedicated runner and has raced in many different marathon competitions across the country. In the back of his mind, he always carried the thought that he would love to be involved in starting a half marathon race. The next thing he knew, he was at this “gathering of thoughts” meeting at Burd Ford. Walking out of that meeting left Vince a bit dazed at all the things needed to put together such an effort.

“When I walked out of our first meeting, I had no idea I’d be involved in creating the Geist Half Marathon. Six years later, we are going strong and the race has become part of the community fabric. The first registration numbers after the initial announcement on May 1, 2007, were slow coming in. But then the spike hit; and when registrations hit 4,500 racers, the field was closed and signs of relief pumped up this team of committed volunteers. “We surprised people with our outstanding numbers for a first-time event,” Auten said. “Our race is fun, and it was apparent that there were so many runners out there who would show up to take up the challenge to run our select 5K course,” he added.

It was, indeed, a unique group of people who live in the area and individuals who put on other races similar to this half marathon, all gathered together with a commitment to make it the best half marathon ever. -Vince Auten

The first planning meetings for this wonderful family day of racing did, in fact, bring a lot of issues to the table for the group to work through: getting sponsors, developing a budget to fund all the expenses, gathering enough volunteers to help with so many assignments during the race, and a host of other issues that all needed to be covered. “The way the community stepped up to fill the many roles of sponsorship was incredible,” said Auten. “It was, indeed, a unique group of people who live in the area and individuals who put on other races similar to this half marathon, all gathered together with a commitment to make it the best half marathon ever.” The tone of the meetings also included the goal to benefit the schools and organize as a nonprofit. To date, in five years, the Geist Half Marathon has kept that goal front and center, raising over $225,000 for the Geist-area schools.

That first race also held responsibilities on additional issues such as would the buses be able to transport all the people at the pickup sites to the race on time and how to deal with any long lines that might occur due to busing so many people at once. From the outside, you don’t always see all the little things that go into the planning and set the stage for an event that is fun, challenging, and involves a wonderful charitable cause that really does benefit the community schools. “The Geist Half Marathon provides all this and then some. It’s a great family day and a challenging event for runners who love to compete. It’s unique — the running by water and the beautiful views you have on the course. The hills are a challenge, make no mistake about this, but it’s what calls out to a runner to commit every year,” Auten said, adding, “It’s not our goal to be bigger than the other races. It’s our goal to host the best community race.” Many thanks for Vince Auten and all the other board may 2013

Vince with his daughter Katie and wife Ellen. (Daughter Rachel not available for this photo) members and volunteers who have made the Geist Half Marathon such a successful race. This year, it looks as if the numbers are going to set a record again. “Who would have thought? Who would have thought?” Auten said with a big smile on his face. P.S. Thanks, Ellen Auten, for reading the first post for volunteers to start this race! Vince’s driving force and experience as a runner indeed keep the Geist Half Marathon exactly where it needs to be: a community day for runners and walkers!

y husband and I have always enjoyed a relaxing breakfast out – makes us feel like we’re on vacation, I guess, and if it’s a locally-owned place, it seems all that much better! We were delighted to discover Café Audrey tucked so close to home, just down the street from CVS in the Fort Benjamin Harrison area.

Café Audrey is located in the former mule barn at Fort Benjamin Harris.

Café Audrey opened in October, 2011, in an early 20th century military blacksmith shop, named after owner Tammy Cunningham’s mother. Exposed brick walls, wooden floors, and repurposed antique sideboards and cabinetry give it a homey feel, but the warm colors and stylish light fixtures are definitely HGTV-inspired. Local artists are featured on some walls and historic photos on others. Cunningham and her husband of 20 years both worked for the federal government, but she yearned to follow her dream of owning a restaurant. Her mother’s death in 2010 nudged her to quit her job with the tax administration and open Café Audrey. She is now assisted by her grown son, Ty, as kitchen manager. Daughter Jadah is still at Lawrence North; and between her many activities, she also occasionally assists as a server.

We enjoy the Café Audrey breakfasts, often choosing the quiche of the day (mushroom, spinach, and feta…mmmm) or homemade French toast. Huevos Rancheros and breakfast burritos are also featured on the menu, plus biscuits and sausage gravy and a breakfast hash concoction of sausage, fried potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and baby spinach. The menu is made up of family favorites and other mostlymade-from-scratch items, but doesn’t stop at breakfast. Lunchtime is when owner Tammy gets to stretch her foodie creativity, offering things like Jamaican patties, fish tacos, homemade chicken salad, Hoosier tenderloin, BBQ, plus the usual burgers, grilled sandwiches, soups, and salads.

Have a Better Spring.

With the Emmett J. Bean Finance Center a 6-minute walk away, there are hundreds of people seeking an inexpensive lunch option; Café Audrey’s entrees top out around $7.49 for the Reuben or turkey club (coupons often found online). The real advantage, however, is the $1 weekday delivery offered to area businesses and Triton Brewing when orders go over $20. So order with a group of co-workers! Now that the weather has finally warmed up, outside patio seating is available and dog friendly, so you’ll likely find us there on a Saturday morning with one or more big white dogs! (I haven’t heard if there’s a dogspecific menu!) Also, the ice cream parlor is now open until 8:00 p.m., featuring locally-made Sundaes’ ice creams.

It may be cold now, but spring will be here soon. Whether you are planning to travel, go hiking and biking, or just play with your kids this spring, do it without leg pain. Call today and get on the road to better health. We specialize in the treatment of Varicose Veins, Spider Veins and Venous Ulcers.

Paul Stoeppelwerth stands on his Flyboard, a wakeboard-type device that propels you into the air using a jet ski’s water jet.

Former Wakeboard Pro Brings Flyboarding to Geist | Tom Britt

I

f you Google the words “lake recreation,” Paul Stoeppelwerth’s photo should pop up. A 2006 Lawrence Central grad, 2008 slalom ski pro, and seasoned wakeboard instructor, Stoeppelwerth can be found somewhere on or near the water during the warm months. This summer, he’s hoping to get his newest venture off the ground and hovering above the water.

Introducing Indy Flight Academy and Watersports – Stoeppelwerth’s start-up venture that looks to put Flyboarding® and Geist Reservoir on the extreme sports map.

How does Flyboarding work? A willing participant buckles his or her feet into a wakeboard-looking device while standing on a dock. That device, called a Flyboard, is attached via a 45-foot hose to the water jet exhaust of a jet ski manned by Stoeppelwerth. The participant then gets into the lake and arches his back to keep his head above the water, while Stoeppelwerth throttles the jet ski and propels the participant to an open area. When

ready, Stoeppelwerth accelerates the jet ski, pushing more water into the hose and propelling the participant into the air above the water. “It takes you a few minutes to get the hang of it,” said Stoeppelwerth who was recently certified a Flyboard instructor in Florida. Look for these water-propelled flight enthusiasts around Cocktail Cove or at the south end of Geist Reservoir near the dam where boaters like to tie up and congregate. Like most start-ups, Stoeppelwerth is working through his pricing model to find the right amount of time for the right price. For the first 50 takers in May, Indy Flight Academy and Watersports will charge $99 for a 30-minute intro session. To reserve your session or a discounted group block of time, call 317-348-4359 or visit the Indy Flight Academy & Watersports page on Facebook. Be sure to ask how to earn FREE flight time.

Tom Williams, General Manager of Great Day Improvements

When it comes to home improvement and expansion projects, Patio Enclosures and Stanek Windows are two brands that have long been synonymous with quality and durability. Both Clevelandborn brands are now part of Great Day Improvements, LLC – a residential /commercial remodeler and manufacturer offering a portfolio of tailored home improvement solutions. “This is one of several initiatives we’ve executed to transform and expand Great Day Improvements into a one-stop home improvement company for our customers,” said Tom Williams , General Manager of Great Day Improvements in Fishers, IN. “The Stanek brand has been in existence for 60 years and in terms of quality, it is an excellent complement to our legendary Patio Enclosures brand. We are excited about the continued growth of our organization and the additional product offering we will be able to extend to our customers.” Since 1966, Patio Enclosures has custom-manufactured and installed over 250,000 sunrooms, solariums and screen rooms nationwide. And they are known for being some of the best rooms on the market. The same is true for Stanek Windows, which has been producing exquisitely crafted replacement windows, engineered to outperform both the elements and the competition, since 1953.

| Janet C. Striebel Members of the Geist/Fall Creek Watershed Alliance (GFCWA) and the Geist Lake Coalition (GLC) in partnership with the town of Fishers are very excited to announce that they have received a Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources aimed to improve water quality within Thorpe Creek, a tributary of the Geist Reservoir. The success of this project will be directly related to the involvement from local citizens, landowners, and organizations during the planning process. For this reason, the GFCWA and GLC are looking for help in identifying the water quality issues within the watershed by attending the Geist/Fall Creek Watershed Alliance-Geist Lake Coalition Stakeholder Meeting scheduled for 6:30p.m. on May 22nd at the Fishers Train Station meeting room located at 11601 Municipal Drive, Fishers, Indiana 46038. “The purpose of this stakeholder meeting is to help us gather information to utilize in the feasibility study and identify potential locations where problems exist,” says Scott Rodgers, Vice President and Board Member of Geist Lake Coalition. 66 geist c o m m u n i t y n e w s l e t t e r | m a y 2 0 1 3 Geist_May_2013.indd 66

Thorpeexcessive Creek - Geist Reservoir Watershed These problems include stream bank erosion, livestock in the stream, dumps or trash, poorly functioning septic or waste treatment facilities, lack of filter strips (areas of vegetative cover) next to the channels, gully erosion from cropland, construction sites, or neighborhoods which can send a large amount of storm water runoff into the creek. Best Management Practices (BMPs) can be implemented to help prevent sedimentation, nutrient loading, E. coli, and other pollution from entering Thorpe Creek. Furthermore, these BMPs will inevitably improve the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the drainage area resulting in cleaner water for drinking, recreation, fishing, and wildlife.

“At the stakeholder meeting we will be discussing potential issues and concerns to better identify the scope of the study,” says Rodgers, who also serves as the Steering Committee Chair for the GFCWA. After this meeting, this study will work towards identifying and designing up to five sites to implement BMPs based on all areas of concern identified. These BMPs will become blueprints for future projects that can improve the water quality in the watershed and Geist Reservoir and will help address concerns of stakeholders. Rodgers adds, “It is important to note that once these BMP sites have been identified, the GFCWA and the GLC will apply for additional grants through LARE that will provide further funding for implementation of these BMPs with minimal cost share dollars required by the landowner of the project site. We hope to get involvement from citizens, landowners, neighborhood groups, local and state agencies, and others within the watershed area.” Participation will be

highly encouraged within this open meeting and workshop format. For more information about the watershed, please visit the www.geistlake.com or www.atGeist.com/water websites. Rodgers encourages all interested parties to attend the stakeholder meeting. If you have a schedule conflict with this meeting but would like to be involved in this effort, or if you have any questions about the meeting, or would like to provide input on issues along Thorpe Creek that might be able to be addressed by BMP, contact Scott Rodgers by email: scott@scottr.com or by calling 317-826-9551. dreaming of a

Initially, Scott wasn’t thrilled with the word and shape memory exercises he was doing with his cognitive trainer. After all, it was taking away from his play time. But he soon warmed to the tasks as his processing strength and efficiency improved and the LearningRx trainers trained him how to overcome mental blocks, and how not to get frustrated and quit. “And, I learned how to count when you get mad,” said a smiling Scott. McCauley cautioned parents not to wait before taking action. “The longer a child practices bad habits, the more they become ingrained and the lost learning opportunity cost multiplies. Why not address problems early on when they are small, rather than later?” | Neal Moore

A

t age three, Scott Walker was diagnosed with epilepsy. Doctors also discovered a malformation of his brain and warned his parents, Kari and Bryan, that as Scott grew older he likely would struggle with learning disabilities. By fourth grade, Scott was falling behind his Center Grove classmates, and the Walkers began looking for tutoring. That’s when Kari discovered LearningRx. “I was searching online, found LearningRx, started reading, and was amazed at what they could do,” Kari shared. “I knew this was different than tutoring, so we scheduled an evaluation.” Kari and Bryan enrolled Scott in a cognitive (brain) training program with LearningRx, located at 9767 Fall Creek Road. “When we discussed it with his school we’d get rolled eyes and funny looks,” remembered Bryan. “They treated us like over-reacting parents.” Lynne McCauley, LearningRx director, has found it to be a common response. “Teachers will often say the child will outgrow the problem, and for some things, that’s true. Underlying information processing issues are not something kids will outgrow.,” she explained. “Much like an outdated computer, the child is not assimilating, processing, storing, combining or retrieving information accurately and efficiently. They are missing out on content and will get farther and farther behind the longer the problem persists. That leads to poor academic performance, frustration and self- esteem issues.” When Scott started the LearningRx program, it took him several hours to write each of 15 spelling words three times when doing homework. “It killed me to see him struggle,” said Kari. “I was skeptical at first - not that I thought it wouldn’t work, but that it was going to be really hard.”

Today, Scott rarely brings lesson work home. Instead, he’s now able to do most of it at school. Math problems and reading are now much easier since he learned concentration skills at LearningRx. And, Scott - who once struggled so with school is now thinking about becoming a veterinarian. His parents have also noticed a big improvement in his diving skills. “His coach is able to catch his eye on the platform, motion the changes he wants Scott to make, and he gets it. Before LearningRx, that wouldn’t have happened” says Bryan. “it’s helped him academically and athletically.” McCauley emphasized the importance of knowing why your child is struggling in school, and in picking the right solution. “If you’re not getting answers from the school, you need to investigate what’s going on. Bring your student in for a simple cognitive assessment,” she urged. “Arming yourself with the right information will allow you to make an informed decision about how to address the problem.” Neal Moore has over 30 years of media and communications experience, including TV news anchoring and reporting in Indianapolis. T

hose of us smitten by the Indy 500 have come to expect certain traditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on race day: the singing of Back Home Again in Indiana, the balloon release, and the call to Start Your Engines. There’s another, equally embedded tradition that is celebrating its golden anniversary this year – an organization that traces its roots, not surprisingly, to Tony Hulman: The Gordon Pipers. In 1962, Indianapolis veterinarian Dr. Wallace Gordon Diehl founded the Scottish-inspired parade unit after a split from the Murat Highlanders pipe band. At the time, the Highlanders required members to be male and more than six-feet-two inches in height. Desiring a more inclusive option, Diehl and four other Highlanders defected to create an opportunity for their daughters and short-of-stature sons to march in a pipe band. Casting about for a moniker, they settled on founder Doc Diehl’s middle name and became the Gordon Pipers.

Geist_May_2013.indd 73

IMS patriarch Tony Hulman saw them perform at a car show and was impressed by the crowd they’d drawn. “Everybody loved ’em!” according to Doug Hardwick, the current president of the Gordon Pipers. Hulman invited the troupe to perform at the 1963 Indy 500 and at that year’s Victory Banquet, he vowed that as long as his family owned the Speedway, the Gordon Pipers would be a featured attraction. Thus was born the Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers. A not-for-profit organization, the Gordon Pipers have a $40,000 budget funded by performance fees from patrons like IMS, the Indianapolis Colts (as the Horseshoe Pipes and Drums), numerous parades in Indiana, and beyond. “We’re ambassadors for the Indy 500 and the City of Indianapolis,” explained Hardwick. Their reach is international, too, having marched in Scotland and Canada. “Some of us are talking about traveling to Afghanistan to play for the American troops there,” shared Hardwick.

In 1968, Connie Summers began as a Gordon dancer, then added bagpipes to her repertoire the following year. Her daughter, Melissa Whybrew, began performing at age three and a half and is now the dance sergeant and a tenor drummer. “I was born into the band and grew up in it,” said Whybrew. “Now, I have a four-month-old son and he’s destined to be a Piper.” Summers, who once fell during a performance (“I’ve never forgotten that!”), noted there are several children and grandchildren of current members who are Gordon Pipers. “Doug and I grew up together,” reminisced Summers. “The band is very much a close-knit family.”

Hardwick, Tim Bastion, Sharon Hudgens and her daughters, Jessica and Laura, reside in Geist neighborhoods. “I like the opportunities that being a Gordon Piper has opened up,” said Laura Hudgins. “We just played at the Florida Indycar race, and it was fun seeing the race and being next to the drivers.” For a 50th consecutive year, you’ll see

the Bank that’s Close to home.

So you’d like to be a Gordon Piper? Well, first you’ll learn their songs by blowing into a chanter. Resembling a wooden recorder (or the Flutophone you squawked on in elementary school), the chanter has several finger holes and is used to play the melody. Next, you’ll learn to manipulate the air bag for consistent sound, followed by marching lessons. Within a year, you’ll be performing in parades. Outfitting the pipers, drummers, and dancers costs about $2,000 per person. No one is paid to perform – the reward comes with travel opportunities.

At the National Bank of Indianapolis, we’re proud to be the Indianapolis area’s largest locally owned national bank. Our private bankers, our directors, even our shareholders live and work in Greater Indianapolis. Decisions are made locally by people close to the community. So if you’re looking for professional banking service from someone who cares, call Sherry Hyska today at 261-9736.

Band members range in age from 13 to 60 years, and membership hovers around 40 people. “It’s a diverse group including doctors, a retired Marine, police officers – it’s an amazing mix of people,” marveled Hardwick. Extras are necessary because players rotate in and out as their schedules permit. “People have faith, family, and jobs,” said Hardwick, who’s always interested in new members. The band offers instructional classes every three months or so. “Potential pipers have to commit to weekly practices. We like young players, but several recent additions have been age 50 or more. A 72-year-old drummer just retired.”

She’ll make you feel right at home.

“Another Broken Egg Café” is an upscale southern–style café with simple French country décor. The Florida-based chain is known for crawfish omelettes, grits with shrimp, and spicy Bloody Marys to wash it all down. That’s right – Bloody Marys. This breakfast spot has a full bar with seating and a flat sceen TV! Just don’t get too comfortable; they’re only open daily till 2:00 p.m. On my visit to “Another Broken Egg,” the most popular appetizer to share was the “Biscuit Beignets” ($4.99) – a pan of biscuits dusted in powdered sugar and served with honey marmalade. We sampled a signature omelette called “Hey Lucy” ($10.99) which was stuffed with chorizo and cheese and the lobster and brie omelette ($14.99) which 76

geist c o m m u n i t y

was paired with jimaca slaw and black beans with feta cheese. If all this is making you raise an eyebrow, don’t worry. You have to look, but you can find scrambled eggs with bacon and potatoes. The franchisees who own the two Ruth Chris Steakhouse locations in Indianapolis brought “Another Broken Egg” to town. Kevin Armantrout, president of the Hoosier Hospitality Group, says the Meridian Street location is the first one in central Indiana, with another slated for downtown. “We are excited to bring Another Broken Egg here,” says Kevin, a Fishers resident. “A lot of people know this chain from vacationing in Florida or throughout the south, and we think they will be excited to see it here at home!” I enjoyed “Another Broken Egg,” and I was especially impressed with the effort to give this newcomer such a local feel. one wall, and quotes from Hoosier notables such as James Whitcomb Riley and Booth Tarkington are featured on another wall. They serve locally-brewed Sun King beer, Fuzzy Zoeller vodka, summer blossom honey from Huntington, and pure maple syrup from Greencastle. Even their souvenir coffee mugs sport the checkered flag on the front label. A nice local touch for the new kid in town! The café got its catchy name from the original owner who opened “The Broken Egg” and one day was simply asked, “Hey, why don’t you open ‘Another’ Broken Egg?”

hen John Dinger got a call to repair a furnace some 35 years ago, little did he know that service call would lead him not only to his future wife, but also his business partner. John and Kandie Dinger started Action Air Heating and Air Conditioning back in 1986 as a twoperson company that they operated out of their garage. Today, they are headquartered in Fishers and with 15 employees, they service Indianapolis, Fishers, Geist, Anderson, and the surrounding areas. About ten years ago, they partnered with Gary Sylvester who helped round out their team by bringing management skills and a business acumen to the company. John is involved in the technical service-call side, and Kandie handles all the office, payroll, human resources, and marketing functions. Having a hands-on woman in charge in what is typically a man’s field, she says, is rare. But she says people realize quickly that she knows her business. Action Air specializes in the service and replacement of all major brands of furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps. They also handle indoor air-quality issues such as filtration and duct cleaning. One area that they pride themselves in is their low-cost maintenance program which includes two service calls per year: one for furnaces during the heating months and the other for air conditioning during the cooling season. The Action Air Service Club can help save customers money by keeping equipment operating at peak efficiency, extending the life of the system, and troubleshooting potential problems before they happen. Kandie says that the average lifespan of a furnace or air conditioner is 12 to 15 years, and one of the biggest reasons that they don’t last longer is lack of maintenance. She stresses that unlike many other HVAC firms that are owned by large foreign companies, Action Air is truly a local mom and pop business. ”We’re a local company and live in the area. A lot of the people we do furnace and air conditioning work for are people that we are friends with.” She adds that Action Air takes full responsibility for their work; and if it doesn’t get fixed properly the first time, they will make sure the job gets done right. “We try really hard to take really good care of folks. We’re

not just going to do a drive-by, 15-minute tune-up on your air conditioner. They’re usually in your home for an hour to an hour and a half. They’re really thorough,” she says. One of the challenges to the heating and air conditioning business these days, Kandie says, is all the added regulation and new requirements. The cost of providing freon or coolant for older units is becoming prohibitive, so, as a result, it is often cheaper to replace an older unit with a more modern one. Action Air can help you choose the type of system that is best for your home should you need a new one, and financing options are available. Construction on the Brooks School and Fall Creek Roads is scheduled to be finished before the July 4th "Blast on the Bridge" this summer. Brooks School Road should be open again by May 1.

Oaklandon Road Bridge Into Admirals The wooden bridge on Oaklandon Road just north of the 86th Street intersection is going to undergo a major repaving this spring according to Steve Hardiman with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. Two years ago, this bridge was repaved only to have large chunks of asphalt come up last summer. Indianapolis sent a design consultant out to inspect the bridge and find out why it had deteriorated so quickly. “It appears that the preservative in the timber decking is causing the asphalt to lose its bond with the bridge,” said Hardiman. “Our design engineer has developed a solution for the southbound lane that will create a mechanical bond on the timber deck that will be paved over with asphalt. The repairs of this bridge should occur later this spring.” Calument Asphalt Co. has been hired to resurface the bridge. It is scheduled to be completed by May 31st.

Brooks School and Fall Creek Roundabout Town of Fishers officials are pleased with the progress of the roundabout construction at Brooks School and Fall Creek Roads. Brooks School Road should reopen May 1, weather permitting, and allow crews to construct the south half of the roundabout. All roads will remain open during the construction with the only real restrictions being the narrowing of the lanes. “We hope to have it all wrapped up by the July 4th ‘Blast on the Bridge’,” said Jeff Hill, Director of Engineering for the Town of Fishers. 80

Whether you are headed to the race, attending time trials, enjoying Carb Day, or going to one of the many parties in this town, you will need something black and white to wear! The question

is where to shop??? Your Girls About Town particularly enjoyed this month’s assignment…find some stores with great black and white apparel. While there are many places to shop, we landed at Delaney’s, the Baglady Boutique, and AH Collection. All three shops are locally owned by some of your Geist neighbors and definitely “qualify” as winners to these shoppers!

First stop: Delaney’s at Fox and Oaklandon Roads. Mary Larson’s (front) shop features several Indy 500 accessories, clothes, and home furnishings.

One clear trend we found…BLING IS IN!!! Be it on a tank top, belt, hat, sunglasses, or jeans, you will see lots of rhinestones out and about this May. It’s a fun look that we couldn’t resist! The month of May is all about fun, and what’s more fun than a little sparkle?!? You can add a little dazzle to your hair, too. All three shops had cute glitzy hair accessories, also. The first store we visited was Delaney’s at Oaklandon and Fox Roads. We were greeted by the always-friendly owners, Mary and Dan Larson. Named for their daughter, Delaney’s has been a go-to shop for Geist ladies since Second stop: Missy Card and Kevin Krauss’s Baglady Boutique. 2002. You’ll find everything from cutting edge fashions to great home accessories to the perfect hostess gift! If you need some black and white to decorate your home for the month of May, check out the many choices this store has to offer. Some of the more special accessories are the handpainted, Indy-500-inspired wine glasses that Delaney’s grandmother created for the shop. Mary also has everything you could want if you are looking to impress someone at $ a race party. Delaney’s has racks of black and white outfits – not to mention race-themed sandals, jewelry, and hair accessories. Whether, you need a dressier outfit Will be $ donated to the for a party or something more casual for race day, Delaney’s has Geist Half Marathon. you covered. Delaney’s has four locations across Indianapolis in Geist, Fishers, Noblesville, and the Fashion Mall. Next on our shopping trip was the Baglady Boutique- a quaint little shop chock full of blingy surprises in the shopping center at Fall Creek and Brooks School Road next door to Detour an American Bar and Grill. Owners Missy Card and her fiancé Kevin Krauss have done a wonderful job providing Geist-area residents with a great selection of fun, easy-breezy apparel items, blingy jewelry, purses, and accessories. Missy has been designing and manufacturing apparel for over 14 years. The Baglady Boutique celebrates her one-year anniversary this month,

Collection! Located at Hamilton Town Center next to Aveda Rain, AH Collection is co-owned by best friends Anna White and Holly Kirsch. You have to love ladies who can team together and create such a success! We noticed the special attention they give their customers. It’s really like shopping with a stylist! They can help you pick out just the right outfit for the look you want. These former makeup artists can help you with clothing, accessories, and cosmetics. The store is full of black and white this month along with their typically fun and brightly-colored offerings. They also have a second shop at Clay Terrace in Carmel. The owners have taken full advantage of the social media for marketing, too. They are on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. They have over 1000 followers on Facebook and feature a “Deal of the Day” that you might want to check out! They host Girls Night Out events, birthday celebrations, and other pampering events. They also have spa events every six weeks at both locations. If you want to WOW someone this May, let these owners who have a “passion for fashion” help you rev up your look!!
