WELCOME TO KOKOMO “I didn’t realize what all Kokomo has to offer,” I hear this quite often from visitors. They are surprised when they see Kokomo’s strong and growing ecosystem of universities, Fortune 500 companies, and quality of place amenities that drive Kokomo to outperform most Midwestern cities. I want to personally welcome you to visit our city, to see for yourself, what Kokomo has to offer. Education & Workforce: From early childhood to post-bachelor, Kokomo has long recognized that a world-class education system is critical to developing a world-class workforce. Kokomo Schools provides instructional opportunities to all students through its Advanced Placement curriculum, International Baccalaureate Program, International School and Career Center, all of which prepare students for college or technical training. Kokomo’s post-secondary education opportunities are unmatched by any city in Indiana. The growing campuses of Indiana University – Kokomo and Ivy Tech Community College attract students from across the Midwest. In addition, Purdue 6 / 2020 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE
Polytechnic and Indiana Wesleyan’s programs have expanded to meet the workforce demands of the nation’s leading employers. Housing: In 2020, Kokomo’s housing stock was ranked #2 in the nation and #1 in the Midwest in affordability. So whether you’re in the market for a Victorian mansion in a National Register Historic District, a luxury apartment, a downtown condominium or a newly-built bungalow in an established neighborhood, Kokomo’s housing supply has something for you. Quality of Place: Companies like Fiat Chrysler, which has invested $2.5 billion in the Kokomo area, choose to expand their Kokomo facilities to take advantage of our talented workforce. It is the breadth of new amenities and vibrant community events that attracts new residents to Kokomo. The reasons are obvious: new sports stadium, new YMCA, new riverwalk, Summer Concert Series, Farmer’s Market and annual community festivals. Hope to see you in Kokomo! Tyler O. Moore, Mayor

Factor City of Firsts Adventure Park Features Revamped Facilities and New Amenities Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
City of Firsts Adventure Park is gearing up for its second season of affordable family fun. Located at 409 Arrow Street on the site of the old Kokomo Raceway, it is a destination where both residents and visitors to the area can enjoy a variety of activities for all ages. The determination and hard work of Jesse Gonzales and his parents Robyn and Danny, after they assumed ownership, breathed new life into the venue. “Our son Jesse and his family moved back to Kokomo a few years ago and felt disappointed in the absence of family things to do right here in Kokomo, specifically outdoor activities that were affordable,” Robyn says. “They lived close to the old raceway that was once a thriving place to play, and thought it was a shame it was just sitting there falling apart. After making their thoughts known
to my husband Danny, the two of them decided to see what they could do about it.” When the family bought the property in late August of 2018, they pushed hard to get the park ready to open for the 2019 season. They rebuilt areas around the mini golf courses, repaired the batting cages by adding new nets, and renovated the go-kart track. Old outside fencing was removed, and when the winter weather made it impossible to work outside they focused on the building interior, which houses an arcade and party room. “We never thought it would be easy and it wasn’t,” Robyn says. “Most people would have likely had to hire out what Danny and Jesse did on their own. There are blood, sweat and tears embedded all over the City of Firsts Adventure Park. We landscaped the whole park, thanks to David Lind. He hauled in 22 tons of river rock and lots of mulch to accomplish that 14 / 2020 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE
feat. Flowers and small trees were planted throughout. All the go-karts needed work to get them up and running.” Robyn says the family also sought to involve sponsors in the facility. “When we rebuilt the go-karts, the idea was born to ask for sponsors who would advertise by displaying their names and logos around the park with banners, go-kart wraps, stickers on batting helmets and other smaller areas around the park,” Robyn says. “Our cold calls resulted in rejections, but once the park opened I think [sponsors] could envision their names on those karts, so now we have several beautifully wrapped go-karts - thank you to Clifford Signs and our sponsors.” The arcade is a free play area - after purchasing a bracelet, visitors can play all games without coins or tokens. Six softball and baseball batting cages can be used individually, and entire teams can come out to practice and improve their skills. New features have been added to the two 18-hole, rejuvenated miniature golf courses. Each individual activity is priced around $5 to $10, and prices increase to $60 if an entire team books two batting cages. The venue’s big draw is the track, and the single and double go-karts. Go-kart options range from one-time single rides to multiple laps with two people in the cart, and prices start at $6. To ensure that all members of a family have a fun adventure, the kiddie track 2020 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 15
has been converted into a pedal kart track for smaller children. City of Firsts Adventure Park is a great place to hold celebrations. The party room can hold 12 to 15 people, and there is a sitting area in the arcade room
where customers can watch their children and enjoy a beverage. An open area has outdoor games such as cornhole, as well as a basketball court. Soda drinks, candy and snacks can be purchased onsite, and Scoops Ice Cream is located across the street.
Robyn says her family is in the planning stages for adding a pavilion, more landscaping, and additional activities for smaller kids on the kiddie track. The family also plans to eventually add more games to the arcade.

“People have asked if the park is for sale, mostly because one of our sponsors happens to be a realtor so her banner flies front and center,” Robyn says. “We have not made that move, but with Grand Park and new motels coming into Kokomo, if there’s someone out there who is able to come in and grow the park even bigger and better, we would certainly give it consideration. This has been a small family project so we are limited, but Kokomo is growing.” City of Firsts Adventure Park is located at 409 Arrow Street in Kokomo. Healthy Living Eating Seasonally & Sourcing Locally Writer / Meredith lacocca Photography Provided
When you think of your local Farmer’s Market, you probably don’t get as excited to go in the dead of winter than you would during the peak of summer. Fresh tomatoes! Sweet Corn! Peppers galore! Yes, the summer seasons of produce do provide us with some beautiful, tasty produce. But what about the rest of the year? We tend to forget that there still is delicious produce to be had all through the year. It’s easy to miss what’s close by and why it’s so important, maybe because we have the enormous privilege and ability to have almost any type of food all year round. Tropical fruit, avocados, berries, you name it. It is absolutely a privilege that not all countries have. But why does it matter to eat seasonally? It’s so much easier to just run to the store and grab what you need. Sourcing your food seasonally and locally, however, can have great nutritional and economic advantages. Let’s first take a deeper look at how your food gets from the field to your plate. If you’re buying an avocado in January in the Midwest, chances are that avocado is coming from Mexico or even south America. Picked from the trees, packed into trucks, sent to a packaging facility, then to a distributor, a retailer and finally, to you. Hundreds, probably even thousands of miles away. That’s no short trip! Now think about transportation. How many miles did that avocado really travel? What
was the carbon footprint? Trucking is the second largest carbon emitter next to air travel in regard to U.S transportation. Not to mention, the avocados must be held at specific temperatures to encourage ripening so that they don’t over-ripen before they reach the consumer. That temperature control need also uses more energy. Also, thousands of gallons taken to support the avocado orchard in the first place can drain natural resources too. Now, I’m not suggesting we boycott avocados and never eat one again, but I want you to understand how much energy is put into one little fruit that we are so used to having available everywhere. It is extremely important to be conscious of the ‘How’ and ‘Where’
Serving Central Indiana
Contrast the long and expensive journey of your avocado to food we have right in our backyard. In the Midwest, the winter is great especially for hearty root vegetables and rich greens. Often, we may feel too intimidated to buy more local produce in colder seasons because we may not know what do to with it or how to prepare it. What the heck can you do with a Rutabaga? How can turnips possibly taste yummy? Often, these nutrient-dense root vegetables can be easy replacements for more common ones like potatoes! I encourage you to simply google whatever new vegetable you want to try and you will be introduced to a slew of ideas of how to make them delicious. There are endless possibilities.

Along with trying new foods, foods that are grown in season and in healthy soil create a richer, more nutrient dense product. Often when we tune in to the seasonality of food, what is available is often exactly what we need to keep us healthy. Why do we eat soups when we’re sick? It’s been suggested the healing properties of bone broth is one of the reasons why we turn to soup. This is even more beneficial in the colder seasons when everyone around us has a cough or the flu. Eating nutrient dense foods is one of the simplest ways to boost your body’s immune system and fight off illness.
For all your Screen Printing, Custom T-Shirts and Embroidery Needs
Finally, what may be the most important aspect of eating seasonally is how much more of your money goes back into your very own community. When you shop locally, on average 48% of each purchase gets recirculated locally compared to less than 14% at a chain retailer. Dollar for dollar, your money has greater impact when it stays close to home. It may be easier or more convenient to just head to your local chain retailer for food but know that your dollars count. Your dollars impact your health, your community and the people within it. Don’t be intimidated to embrace a new vegetable, learn what your region grows and support it!

CarSnoop: New App Takes the Time & Stress Out of New Car Buying Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
Cole Keesling knew as far back as 1997 that the traditional approach to car buying could be improved upon. He was determined to establish a service that could eliminate the hassle of long waits at dealerships, and backand-forth haggling. “I knew there had to be a better way,” says Keesling, who has extensive experience as a new and used auto sales manager and finance manager. “I started out a few years
ago by talking to people needing cars and getting information on their trade-in vehicle and then talking to multiple dealers on their behalf to get offers so they wouldn’t have to have that hassle. I did about 100 deals manually without any sort of app, and now we have our app, CarSnoop, that makes the entire buying process that much easier.” Users can stay home and download the CarSnoop app on their smartphone and enter details for the vehicle they wish to lease or buy. The app finds customers a range of new car offers from CarSnoop’s 2 / 36 CARMEL / 2020MAGAZINE DIRECTORY / AND APRILRELOCATION 2020 / atCarmel.com GUIDE
exclusive network of Indiana dealers, who can then bid on the customer’s new vehicle need. It’s all 100% anonymous — dealers have no information on potential buyers beyond the city they live in, and as such, customers are not bombarded with emails and sales calls. After customers choose the right deal for them, all the necessary paperwork is prepared so that the customer only needs to sign and pick up their new car. Even those trading in their used vehicle can do so through CarSnoop’s hassle-free process,
which involves uploading photos and entering a few basic pieces of information like mileage, condition and vehicle identification number. A refundable $100 deposit is required once a customer has searched the app for their preferred vehicle attributes and is ready to view the best offers. Once the transaction is complete, the deposit is refunded. The final paperwork and delivery steps can be completed at a dealership, or the dealer can deliver the documents and car to the customer’s preferred location. “Our number-one priority is the user experience — we want the user to feel the process we’ve built makes sense, is easy to understand, and is comfortable,” says Keesling, adding that CarSnoop is a locallyowned company based in Fortville. The CarSnoop app is currently only available for Indiana customers, and Keesling says the company —which also includes Keesling’s wife Janel, who serves as brand champion, Vice President Shawn Manion, and Dealership Sales Manager Chris Evans — plans to expand into the Louisville and Cincinnati market by the summer.
“We want 100 dealers per market area of about one million people,” Keesling says. “We’re going to do about 60% of our business from the core dealers - Chevrolet, Toyota, Ford, Honda and Chrysler Dodge Jeep. We’re currently doing new cars only because we don’t want condition to be an objection at delivery. We will be moving to certified preowned options in the future as well.” Keesling says a top issue throughout the auto industry in recent years is a desire on the part identity,” he says. “On the app, you’re building of buyers for alternative methods for buying your exact car, right down to the color.” cars that reduce direct dealership involvement. The reasons Keesling wanted to launch “I think we’re ahead of the curve with the CarSnoop in the Central Indiana market way the market is going,” he says. “It’s our are simple. job to educate the buyer, and everybody is able to chat directly with us. When “I’ve spent 22 years in the car business, with customers are chatting with CarSnoop, they most of that in the Indianapolis market, and are literally speaking with me and Shawn. we’re all from here — we couldn’t think of a Also, if they want to do a test drive they can better place to start,” he says. “We wanted to do that and ask not to be entered into the get behind the Indiana tech movement. The dealership’s system. There are virtual test relationships with dealers that Shawn, Chris drives online now, too.” and I have here are great. We really believe we’re going to change the way people lease Keesling stresses that CarSnoop is a buying or buy new cars, doing it from right here in app rather than a shopping app. Indianapolis.” “We encourage the customer to do their homework on the vehicle they want to lease or buy elsewhere, and then come to CarSnoop where they can protect their atCarmel.com 2020 DIRECTORY / APRILAND 2020RELOCATION / CARMEL GUIDE MAGAZINE / 37 / 3
