PLAY FOR ALL WESTERN PRIMARY SCHOOL’S ALL INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND, A YEAR LATER
Tricia Harlow, a physical education teacher at Western Primary School in Russiaville, is witnessing her two-year dream become a reality.
an all-inclusive playground is being constructed on the school’s grounds. Accessible to every student, the play space fills a need for special-needs children who take buses to the school through the Kokomo Area Special Education Cooperative.
time, Harlow approached her school’s leadership with the idea in 2018. Administrators told her they liked the idea but no funds were available. Undeterred, Harlow set a major fundraising campaign into motion to raise the resources required for the project.

By the summer of 2019, $72,000 had been raised through various fundraisers and contributions from community businesses. The push for funds continued and by late June of this year, enough was raised for playground construction company PlayPros to make initial preparations for the space. On July 1, Davidson Excavating broke ground. “We purchased the equipment through PlayPros, but they’re donating all of their time, labor and installation,” Harlow says. “Davidson Excavating did all of the ground work, hauling the gravel and gravel compaction, all pro bono. This was close to an $18,000 savings. All of the equipment is already in the ground and ready to go. The fence posts have to be installed first before pouring the surface.”

Janet Cline, a primary K-2 title aide at Western School Corporation, says contributions from individuals and community organizations account for 64% of the funds raised for the project. “About 27% of the money came from grants such as the Duke Foundation,” Cline says. “I would say we got over the hump with an Indiana Department of Environmental Management grant, along with contributions from Western School Corporation and Davidson Excavating, who donated their time, equipment and materials.”
THE PLAYGROUND WAS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS OF ALL ABILITIES TO ENJOY COOPERATIVE PLAY.
The playground was designed for students of all abilities to enjoy cooperative play. The area features a unique swing, where two friends can face each other and just one set of legs is needed to do the pumping. There is a “we-saw” with a ramp that allows a child in a wheelchair to enter and be strapped in. A large hill features a traditional slide with no ladder, as well as a roller slide.

LET’S MAKE AN OFFER!
“We have a jungle gym that’s just awesome,” Harlow says. “There’s a ropes course, monkey bars, fire pole, spinners, a bridge, slides, and all kinds of activity boards. We have one little guy in particular that I think will love this space. He is in a wheelchair for the most part. He’s never been able to go down a slide because of the ladder limiting him.” Harlow adds that the local community has rallied around the project. “Many people, businesses and churches supported our fundraising efforts while others created their own,” Harlow says. “Janet was a godsend. She was able to get around $67,000 in grants. Davidson Excavating along with Justin Moos and his guys from PlayPros have been amazing. We couldn’t have done it without their generosity.” To learn more, go to facebook.com/pg/PlaygroundWPS.

JOSH BROWN
I loved growing up in Kokomo. Marsh’s fresh donuts, Fred’s smooth voice, Hill’s fireworks, birthdays at Happy Joes, and the Russiaville ballpark made my childhood! I love that I graduated from the same school where I attended Kindergarten (Go Panthers!), along with about 75% of the same kids. I went to Purdue with many of these classmates and remain friends to this day. There is so much tradition in Kokomo. It’s a small enough town where people know who Hope is, but a large enough city to sustain a revitalization that now includes concerts in the park, farmer markets, bike paths, First Fridays and festivals galore! I just want to tell everyone’s story. I want Kokomo to know the people behind the businesses, in the classrooms and of the community. Kokomo Magazine was launched to remind us how and why Kokomo truly is a great city!
I’ve spent more than 35 years in the magazine business and have loved watching the industry change over the years. Back in 2004, I had this idea to do a local magazine with a website called atGeist.com for our community of Geist Reservoir. We mailed the first issue out to just over 2,600 neighbors - the response was overwhelming. As we grew, I wanted to find a way to share what my wife, Jeanne and I had built with other people like Kim Senkus, the Publisher of the Kokomo Magazine. In 2016, we converted the Towne Post Network into a franchise business and began expanding in Indiana and Kentucky. We are still very much a family business: My wife Jeanne, and I are the sole owners and our son, Robert Turk, is Associate Publisher of two magazines including the Geist Magazine where this all started. Sharing the good news in our local communities is very rewarding, and having the privilege to work with people like Kim that shares that love for Kokomo makes it even more fun.
With our team, we publish community magazines spotlighting all things local. We hope to bring a publication to your coffee table that is enjoyable to read, connects the people and the businesses in the community and is filled with positive information showcasing all that makes each community a great one. We started our business in 2004. My role in our company is financial and organizational. I am responsible for franchisee financial reporting, network accounts receivable and payable, overseeing payroll, HR, freelance vendor payment and annual corporate accounting/auditing. I have worked my entire career in accounting and in the financial side of the publishing business for almost 25 years. When I’m not working, I most love all things family - being a wife, mom, Gramma and dog mom - books, art, cooking, music, wine, travel, being outdoors and yoga.
I joined the Towne Post Network in March of 2016 after graduating from Ball State University with a degree in sales and marketing. Within the organization, my focal point is primarily sales and results driven. To get to sit down with small business owners with a sole focus of supporting local is what engages me, and to get to see foot traffic thru their door at the end of the day is more than rewarding. My wife Erin and I reside in Fishers with our yellow lab, Arthur. Our trio enjoys traveling, music, and time spent with our family and friends.
I began my career with the Towne Post Network in February of 2017 as the managing editor, overseeing editorial content and social media throughout the franchised territories in Indiana and Kentucky. Today, I serve as the Director of Digital Engagement for all magazines, helping establish a strong online and social media presence. I am an Arkansas native and hold a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Union University. I have a strong background in feature writing, copyediting, copywriting, website and social media management and more. I live in Fishers, with my wife, Krystal, our three kids, Elleigh, Millie and Nolen, and dog Dizzy.

Having spent much of my time behind the camera in Kokomo shooting sports, the idea of working with Kokomo Magazine appealed to me because it would allow me to be more engaged with those in my photographs. To see those photos in such a quality product is rewarding as well. Through the work I’ve done with the magazine, I have learned new things about the community I have called home for nearly 20 years. That’s thanks in no small part to the many interesting and dedicated individuals and businesses we have featured over the course of our first year.
I am an Indianapolis resident and have been contributing to the Towne Post Network, Inc. since December of 2016 in a freelance writing capacity, and I enjoy the diverse range of topics I get to cover and learn about each month. I also currently serve as co-editor for all Towne Post Network magazines. I am also a singer and guitarist who performs around central and northern Indiana. When I am not writing, editing or singing, I am probably spending time with my wife Kelly and our two-year-old German Shepherd, Penny, who has more energy than the both of us combined, venturing out on hikes and visiting nearby dog parks.

When I was asked to write an article for the inaugural issue of Kokomo Magazine, I was excited to be one of the writers. As a former teacher, I found the topic of an all-inclusive playground for Western Primary School interesting. A year later, it’s thrilling to write about its progress. Whether I write a feature or a business spotlight article, I am impressed by Kokomo’s community spirit. People are warm, friendly and easy to talk to. It has been a privilege to share their stories. I also write about cooking and maintain a couple food blogs: YatesYummies and OrangesAndAlmonds.
I have lived in Kokomo my entire life. I attended Boulevard Elementary, Maple Crest Middle School, and graduated from Kokomo High School in 2015. After graduating high school, I studied Communication at Indiana University Kokomo and graduated in May of 2019. Since then, I have been working in town and have been enjoying my time as a writer for the Kokomo Magazine. Through the magazine, I have been able to learn more about the local businesses and their stories. In my free time, I enjoy walking my dog Bandit around the parks and attending the fun events downtown!
I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana but was often down toward Indy practicing and competing in Figure Skating. I once even performed professionally with a traveling skating show! I’ve now lived in Noblesville for 10plus years and am married with two daughters who are my partners in crime when it comes to exploring, which you can see on my blog. I love writing for the Towne Post Network of magazines because it’s a way to feed my appetite for being creative while showing my girls you don’t have to do just one thing and being a part of such a cool team!

THE O’NEILL FAMILY COTTAGE
AT INDIANA BEACH Writer / Patrick K. Rocchio Photography Provided by Chris Beushausen and Patrick K. Rocchio
A few weeks ago during this rather dismal and self-isolating hot summer, it was announced that Indiana Beach was reopening under new ownership. The promise was to provide patrons with an immensely improved amusement and water park experience. During my teen years (class of 1965), Indiana Beach was a go-to destination for Kokomo’s youth, specifically those with either a driver’s license or a friend with a driver’s license, and, of course, a car was the required means of transportation. The main attractions were the games of chance lining the midway, the thrilling and exciting water toboggan slide, the twoperson paddle boats for excursions on the lake, a variety of tasty junk food vendors, and the spacious open-air concert or dance pavilion. The most frequently traveled routes from Kokomo to Indiana Beach for my peer group were via either highways 22 West to 29 North to 18 West, and onward through Flora and Delphi to 421 North, or by Highway 35 North to Logansport then on to 24 West to the large billboard marking the entrance for Indiana Beach near Lake Shafer and the town of Monticello.
Typically, day visits to Indiana Beach would be reserved for our weekends. The preferred venues for weekday gatherings were the water and dance hall at Seashore Pool on West Park Avenue. After the pool closed around 9:30 p.m., those living the American Graffiti lifestyle would relocate to the food service drive-ins, the most popular being the Big Boy restaurant at the southeast corner of East Markland Avenue and South Apperson Way. Hitting the jackpot for Indiana Beach was having a friend with a lakeside family cottage, a power boat with a 45-horsepower motor, and a set of adjustable water skis. In our group of friends, the unrivaled popular hostess who checked all the boxes was Maureen O’Neill and her hospitable family. Further, Reenie, as she was known by me, was an attractive girl whose presence alone served as a teen guy magnet. What’s not to like about the O’Neill family cottage on Lake Shafer? Actually, the best of the many features at the O’Neill lake cottage was the kindness of the parents. Addressed by me and my respectful friends as Mr. and Mrs. O’Neill, and absolutely never spoken to on a firstname basis, they always had a warm smile when greeting us upon our arrival at their summer cottage. We never felt out of

place or unwelcome at the rustic log cabin cottage, which had been built by Reenie’s father and grandfather with layers of family love applied to the walls. We always were invited to remain for a midday meal of hot dogs, chips and soft drinks, generously furnished by the O’Neill family. Absent any sense of social etiquette, we never considered the thought of offering to cover the expense or at least to contribute to the cost of the plentiful food and beverages. The friend who most often accompanied me to the O’Neill cottage was Gary Huls, occasionally his fraternal twin sisters Susie and Mary Jane, and Steve Black. There were others for sure, but their names cannot be listed due to a woeful lack of certainty in my memory of those days. If Indiana Beach, indeed, has reopened and remains operating this summer and for many years hereafter, both its enjoyable attractions and the adjacent water of Lake Shafer may provide a wealth of fond memories for young friends gathering at a family cottage on the lake’s shore.

Tipton’s Best Kept Secret!
It’s not your Grandma’s antique shop. This doesn’t smell like an antique shop!
MEMORY LANE ANTIQUES Tipton Vintage & Artisan Market Showcases Pieces More Than a Century Old Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
When visitors walk into Memory Lane Antiques, located at 120 North Main Street, they immediately sense the shop is different from a typical antique store. Owned by Susan DeVault and her husband Jack, the shop showcases antique pieces more than a century old as well as vintage items and hand-crafted offerings by local artisans. After being in the business for almost 30 years, the couple is still enthusiastic about the unique inventory they provide to customers.
“It’s not your Grandma’s antique shop. People say, ‘This doesn’t smell like an antique shop!’ I wash all the vintage linens and iron them. Jack washes the furniture. And we display things differently. We’ve bought some crazy stuff, had a lot of fun, and met the nicest people,” says Susie DeVault.
own business and allowed her to open a booth. Later, DeVault maintained booths in antique malls in Noblesville, Wabash and Bunker Hill.
DeVault’s interest in selling antiques began several years ago when she frequented a Tipton antique shop, Timeless Treasures, that was housed in the old J.C. Penny’s building. She would often browse there on her lunch hour. The owner encouraged her to start her
“We are a half-block north of the Court House and like where we are. There is a lot of walking traffic and other businesses around that look great,” DeVault says.

Ten years ago, she began Memory Lane Antiques in Tipton. The shop has been in its current location for the last three years.
Inside, customers find a variety of genuine antiques but also a bit of midcentury
modern nostalgic pieces along with merchandise from local makers. The furniture is all high quality and there is an impressive selection of man-cave items including military memorabilia. Pottery from the closed companies of Weller, Roseville and McCoy allow collectors to find the highly sought-after vases, plates and platters they desire.

“One unique item we found in Green Bay, Wisconsin was half of a sculling boat from England,” DeVault adds. “In fact, we have bought several parts of boats. People that live on lakes just need those. We sold the front and the back of a 1938 Thompson. The front of the boat was a light fixture and the back was a coffee table.” DeVault and her husband travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to continually add inventory to the shop. Using the town of Iron Mountain as a base, they buy objects such as oars, deer mounts, snowshoes and skis. Entering Michigan by way of Wisconsin, the couple search for items as they travel. Recently, they secured 10 sets of forest green and red Depression Ware that will be on display during the holiday season. “We work hard and the business keeps us young. We have great customers that have become friends. There is a reward to it. We know where the stuff goes and we hear how happy it makes the people who buy it,” DeVault says. Memory Lane Antiques is located at 120 North Main Street in Tipton. They are open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Monday and Tuesday by appointment. Judy and Ed Burton, and their sons Greg and Kory, founders of Apple Group, Inc. in Tipton, say local residents have helped their various family businesses succeed through the years. “The amount of community support we have received from people in Tipton and the surrounding counties for the past 48 years has been outstanding,” Judy Burton says. “In 1974, our
family and another couple bought an empty car dealership downtown, and rehabbed an empty building into the Side Street Mall. My father and uncle did all the renovating, and built all the storefronts that still look good today.” Burton says there have been other family businesses as well. “Previous to starting Apple Group, Inc., we owned B’s Boutique Children’s Shop and Shoe Store that was located in the Side Street Mall,” Burton says. Burton’s appreciation of Tipton has grown through the years.

“We grew up here and attended school here, as did our children,” she says. “We all settled here because it is home. We love our community, and all that small towns offer - schools, parks, a sense of neighborhood, and freedom for our children

We also have our community leaders that care, and the Tipton Main Street Association that has worked on improving our downtown appearance.” Burton says her family has also expanded through the years. “We have three sons and their wives, 19 grandchildren, and two greatgrandbabies that live within 20 minutes of Tipton,” she says. “We consider ourselves very fortunate to have everyone close, and can enjoy them on almost a daily basis.” The Burtons have enjoyed watching their business grow, and says it offers many services including screen printing, embroidery and advertising products. “We can do almost anything imprinted or embroidered that you might need,” she says. The company has a solid reputation with its repeat customers. “We pride ourselves on delivery on time, so just tell us when you need it, and we will deliver,” Burton says. “We have grown our customer base through the years by repeated good service, and word of mouth from our good customers. We also have a showroom with all of our samples. Our strengths are our knowledgeable, friendly sales associates, our art department, and our commitment to serving our clients the best we can, by continuing education and sourcing of the latest products available.” Burton is also proud of the work her business does during busy times. She recalls one particularly busy basketball season in the early 1990s. One week before the IHSAA Girls Basketball

State Tournament finals in March of 1993, Kokomo School Corporation (KSC) leaders ordered 1,000 cloth handkerchiefs with a special design on them for fans of the Kokomo girls basketball team. The KSC leaders also ordered 48 shirts with the same design. Burton’s son Greg handled the design, which included an outline of the state of Indiana with a basketball net in the center, and she says the design and the colors on the shirts and handkerchiefs were a big hit.

An additional 250 shirts were ordered and were to be delivered to a pep rally after the Kokomo team won. However, McCutcheon High School in Lafayette had also placed an order with Burton’s company, including 30 shirts with an additional 400 to be delivered if the school won the game. Burton says the tricky part was waiting to see who won, and then getting her orders filled in a timely manner. The Burtons watched the game on a small black-and-white television, and began completing orders accordingly when it became clear that Kokomo would be the victor. It’s a clear example of Burton’s willingness to deliver for customers no matter the circumstance. Apple Group, Inc. is located at 122 North East Street in Tipton.
