Prior to being featured on the Food Network, chef Keith Brooks of The Ville Restaurant was a former chef at both Purgatory and Prairie View Golf Courses and even interned under Emeril Lagasse at the Commander’s Palace in New Orleans. 4 / NOBLESVILLE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JANUARY 2015 / atNoblesville.com
So what did they learn from the show?
Writer / Janet Gilray Photographer / Brian Brosmer
After being chosen for a feature by the Food Network on first time restaurant owners, Raquel and Keith Brooks would have enjoyed almost twice that — if not for the commercials in the half hour show.
“I learned that a whole week’s worth of filming can be condensed into a little more than 15 minutes!” said Raquel, the founder and managing partner of the Ville’s parent company, Special Occasions Catering, LLC. “The footage the producers used was actually just 20-30 minutes counting the commercials. Seriously though, we learned so much from our host [Keith Simpson], and most importantly, it confirmed Noblesville is a great place to open a business!”
And while the fame didn’t quite reach around the world, it did stretch well beyond Noblesville’s courthouse square.
Raquel’s partner and husband, Keith, is a classically trained chef. Known by many as the former chef at both Purgatory and
In a 1968 exhibition of his work in Stockholm, Sweden, artist Andy Warhol commented that in the future, everyone would be world-famous— for 15 minutes.
Prairie View Golf Courses, Keith has a lifetime in catering and even interned under Emeril Lagasse at the Commander’s Palace in New Orleans. “At the heart of the matter, both Raquel and I have discovered that national recognition will never, ever come close to the daily pleasure of making new friends and seeing old friends from over the years come to The Ville, so we can serve them food we love to prepare,” Keith said. Though the owners weren’t paid to be on the show, they consider the national exposure for the historical, vibrant Central Square to be priceless; not only

for the restaurant but for the overall business community. They hope viewers who saw the show will come see the completed remodel of their 10th and Logan Street location that was going on as the show was being filmed. “We invite the community to come see our beautiful new interior,” Raquel said. “We are in a glorious, historical building, one block from the town square. This corner has long enjoyed being home to a restaurant. We know, many miss the retired owner,
but times do move on. Please come see our renovated space and make new memories with us.” Since the Food Network aired the feature on The Ville, a grand opening was held in late autumn, after which Raquel and Keith have continued to focus on growing their business, market the mezzanine private event space, broaden community awareness and support local artists with dedicated gallery space. The main dining room features paintings by
Gabriel Lehman. The mezzanine features artwork by students of Noble Crossing Elementary. Plans are in the making for musical entertainment on the lines of an open mic night, perhaps in early 2015. The Ville has an American themed menu which also includes New Orleans cuisine and specially created vegetarian dishes. Open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch buffet, telephone and website reservations are accepted.

FEDERAL HILL PROJECT GETS GREEN LIGHT Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear has been advocating the Federal Hill Project since 2007. Writer / Allie Nash Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Western banks of the White River in downtown Noblesville will soon be overflowing, not with flood waters but with crowds, retail and outdoor activities. The Noblesville City Common Council approved a $6 million project to make the vacant area just north of Riverview Hospital a place of gathering and events. There will be an amphitheater, bathrooms and art displays at the new Federal Hill project. “We thought ‘What do we call this area?’” said Deputy Mayor Michael Hendricks. “I had one list of all the potential names. The second list was why it should be called that. When I first saw this, I thought this [Federal Hill] doesn’t make sense. But at Lakeview and Logan, that building was formerly the Federal Hill School. Now everyone will have the ability to have that knowledge of the area.” Set to start in the spring of 2015, the project will be funded through the Logan Street TIF fund, which means there will be no money used from a general tax fund. “A TIF district is a way to finance new
projects and actually means Tax Increment Financing,” said Mayor John Ditslear. “As an example, this ground (pointing to the land covered in trees and brush) is useless and has nothing on it. Let’s say a bank comes and builds, which increases the value of the property. We get to capture the difference in the increment that the developer made.” But during the process to approve the project, some were worried about the price tag. “Well, I agree $6 million is a lot of money,” said Hendricks. “I think if we want to see that side of the river grow and clean up, we have to do something to do that. It is a huge beautification project.” But Hendricks also said that other groups have expressed their excitement for how they can use the new and improved space. The Main Street Farmers’ Market might call that space home and Shakespeare in the Park will move its performances to the new amphitheater. “I am hopeful that this project might be home to our Farmers’ Market in the coming years,” said Noblesville Main Street Executive Director Chris Owens. “The plan
for the space naturally lends itself to the event and may even hold possibilities for other Main Street programs as well.” Another part of the project is the story wall that will be along a sidewalk that connects Federal Hill to the town square. The wall will feature concrete panels that depict the history of Noblesville. The idea to incorporate history into the project came from the public saying that it was important to them. “We are very deep rooted and we are very proud of where we have been,” said Hendricks. “We are the county seat and having one place that shows our history is exciting. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I think the story wall will be amazing.” The project was a long time coming, being first considered in 2007. But after the economic downturn, it was put on hold. Using the studies and public input, the project was picked back up. “We started the process of looking at that property back in ’07. There was a large study done for our downtown and meetings,” said Hendricks. “And what came out was the barrier of the river. How do we make it
atNoblesville.com / JANUARY 2015 / NOBLESVILLE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 7
part of our downtown because downtown does not end at the river.”
“I see the Federal Hill project as a great catalyst for economic development in Noblesville,” said Owens. “This space will The area is in a flood plain so development allow the city to better brand and identify the there was out of the question due to the high western gateway to downtown as well as use cost of filling in the ground. But with Federal the White River as a point of connection and Hill, the hope is that development will happen hopefully further development.” around the district.

ndianapolis metro communities are flled with history and historic buildings. In downtown Franklin, there is a building dating back to 1915 when it was an auto dealership. Afer time it fell into complete disrepair, but afer much work, the building received a national award for its restoration. In 2012, resident Cori Brown wanted to start a business and saw the old building, close to the courthouse, as an ideal location and an opportunity to breathe new life into the Johnson County seat. It took Cori and her husband Scot – owner of the Brown Remodeling Company – a year to bring the building back to life. Teir work received national recognition in November when Window & Door magazine, the authority on the most innovative and trending window and door products on the market, named Franklin Window & Door “2014 Dealer of the Year: Excellence in Showroom Design.” As a highlight of the downtown revitalization efort, Franklin Window and Door is a warm, welcoming and elegant space. “Restoring the building was no simple task,” Cori says. Reconstruction included raising the southwest corner of the building four inches. Te original pressed metal ceiling was uncovered and restored. Te interior restoration includes wooden beams from a local 1800s era barn and the entire front façade was rebricked. Window & Door quotes Krista Linke, the director of community development for the city of Franklin as saying, “What [Cori Brown] did with that building was just amazing. It was one of our worst buildings downtown. Tey basically rebuilt it and made it historically appropriate. It’s a great example of the kind of work we want to see take place.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE TOWNEPOST NETWORK Writer / Tom Britt
It’s hard to believe that just over 11 years ago, my daughter, Tory and I were stufng mailboxes in our neighborhood announcing the launch of atGeist.com. About eight months later, we mailed our frst Geist Community Newsleter to just over 2,500 homes. Today, our TownePost Network has expanded to nine hyper-local monthly newsleters and just over 130,000 homes in Central Indiana. Much of that growth has happened in the past three years and we’re poised to grow even more in 2015 as we start to franchise our concept.

f you’ve ever been to Pinheads Recreational Center in the past, then you probably recall how this bowling paradise catered mainly to kids, but not anymore. This new establishment focuses on “family” and “Mom and Dad” with its new agenda such as swapping the kids play area for a multipurpose banquet facility and introducing a “casual-upscale” wine and dine restaurant. Instead of primary colors, visitors will admire the cozy and rustic charm of the new décor. Although families may visit Pinheads to bowl a game or two, with all the changes of the current remodel, Mom and Dad may opt to get a babysitter to escape. They can now enjoy a relaxing dinner together or a splendid food tasting event paired with wine at Pinheads. Not a big wine drinker? Pinheads also supports local Indiana breweries with their craft beer selection.
“We pride ourselves in giving topnotch service to all of our customers,” says Kevin Walter, the chief operating officer of Pinheads. “When compared to similar facilities in greater Indianapolis, we’re No. 1 in customer service reviews. Out of over 700 Groupon reviews, we average 97 percent in customer satisfaction.” Pinheads doesn’t stop their service at games. They offer food made from scratch with two certified chefs onsite to oversee the kitchen. And don’t expect the typical nachos from a concession stand. Pinheads offers upscale pub food including fresh appetizers, hand-patted burgers and hand-stretched dough for pizza. The large facility features 32 bowling lanes and two private suites that have their own lanes. And kids will love the updated game area, which features new prizes. PETS HEALING VETS
Writer / Kathi Moore
The statistics are alarming – 620,000 American veterans are reportedly suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). Veterans are two times more likely to commit suicide than civilians, with an estimated 18 veterans taking their lives every 24 hours. But there is help for these troubled men and women. In fact, Indiana is home to a unique program for these veterans, which is the only one of its kind in the country. Pets Healing Vets, a program of the Humane Society of Hamilton County (HSHC), serves vets throughout the state of Indiana. Qualifying vets can receive a free pet adoption of a carefully selected dog or cat based on their individual needs, including free training and follow-up care.
Justin & Megan Morseth
“Pets connect, protect, console, forgive and unconditionally love us,” explained Rebecca Stevens, HSHC Executive Director. “These animals can break through and help calm a vet with anxiety or social issues and provide security just by being there.” The healing power of pets is undeniable. Research shows that companion animals have had a significant effect on individuals suffering from PTSD and TBI. Greg Sexton, a vet with PTSD and owner of Patton, a black lab mix, says the dog brought him out of his shell. “She’s there for me 100 percent of the time,” he says. The HSHC has a special fund for the Pets Healing Vets program. Most of the vets involved are referred by the Counseling Department of the Veteran’s Administration (VA). But these same men and women are often financially or otherwise incapable of caring for a pet. The HSHC works closely with each vet to follow up on any financial and/or medical concerns with the pet. The pet adoption is free, often monthly food is free, and veterinarian care is subsidized— for the life of the pet. It is truly a mission
Justin and his late dog, Samson.
which the HSHC believes changes and even saves lives on both sides of the leash. Justin & Megan Morseth understand the great need for vets and were the catalyst for the program two years ago. What should atNoblesville.com / JANUARY 2015 / NOBLESVILLE / 21
have been a joyous time in their lives, the birth of their baby, triggered severe PTSD depression in Justin that had him in his basement, about to end his own life. Their Siberian Husky, Samson, followed him downstairs and calmly laid his head

on Justin’s lap. The dog stayed with him, calming him, and likely saving his life. Megan later contacted more than 50 shelters in Indiana to work on a program for vets. Only the HSHC got back with her and thus the program was born. A small grant from the Tony Stewart Foundation got them started with a website and brochures for the VA’s use. The rest of the program, including
“We’re a unique organization,” said Stevens. “We serve Hamilton County as both Animal Control AND Humane Society. We are one of the few shelters in the U.S. that are both open admission [must take in every animal] and no kill. No animal is euthanized with a treatable medical condition or behavioral issue that can be rehabilitated. The county covers the first seven days an animal is held at our facility (approximately 27 percent of annual operating budget). However ,HSHC covers 100 percent of an animal’s medical care for illness or injury from the moment they arrive and the cost of all care after seven days.” Donations fund 100 percent of the care and feeding of all the animals, as well as three restricted funds. Pets Healing Vets is one such fund. The other two are the Building Fund – the center was already too small the day they moved in years ago – and
the Survivor Program, a medical fund for incoming catastrophic cases such as a dog who has been hit by a car. The HSHC is passionate about its unique Pets Healing Vets program. Stevens’ parents were both military so she feels a kinship with these men and women who continue to struggle with the after-effects of their service. “They say you’re saving an animal,” said one vet in the program. “But they’re saving veterans too.” To learn more or to donate, visit PetsHealingVets. com. Qualifying vets with PTSD or TBI must be referred by their VA physician.
