NOBLESVILLE NATIVE CORY HAFFNER FINDS HIS STRIDE AS SKY ZONE OWNER that he struck with owning his own company and being able to make his own schedule and have time for family rubbed Even as a youngster, Noblesville native Cory off on me,” Haffner says. “I consider myself Haffner had an inkling as to what kind of kind of a serial entrepreneur, and I think he career path he wanted to embark on. inspired me to take that approach.” Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Observing the career progression of his father, who owned Haffner X-Ray Company (HXR), a medical sales, equipment and installation firm, Haffner appreciated the flexibility and allowance for family time that his position afforded. “He always had time to coach my sports teams growing up, and I think the balance

After finishing high school, Haffner went on to play basketball for Danville Area Community College in Illinois before finishing a management and marketing degree at Purdue. Haffner isn’t the only athletic member of his family – his dad played ball at Butler, and his brother Scott played for two years in the NBA after a celebrated college career at the University

of Evansville in the late 1980s. Scott broke UE’s single-game scoring record in 1989 when he dropped 65 points against Dayton – a record that still stands almost 30 years later. “I’m probably the worst player in my family, but in my case that’s still not that bad,” Haffner says with a laugh. “Pretty soon after playing a little in college I knew that entrepreneurship was more my calling.” Haffner joined HXR in a sales capacity after graduating in 1995, and bought the company from his father not long after. For the next eight years he ran HXR while

garnering further entrepreneurial experience through co-ownership of several businesses including pest control and air freshener companies, and was voted into the Indianapolis Business Journal’s top “Forty Under Forty” in 2010. In 2012 Haffner sold HXR to a national firm and found himself with the capital and desire to begin a new professional challenge. A fateful round of golf with a friend set him on a course that would combine his entrepreneurial passion and fondness for athletics. “This friend of mine had gotten involved with Sky Zone pretty early on, and he knew I was selling my business,” Haffner says. “We were talking casually on the golf course, and he suggested I might want to take a look at it.” Before long Haffner had done some exhaustive research on Sky Zone, a worldwide indoor family entertainment chain with connected trampolines and various activities like dodgeball and basketball, and he and a business partner decided to purchase the company’s Fishers location in early 2013. “It’s been fun, and we’re constantly trying to find ways to improve our operation,” says Haffner, adding that the Fishers Sky Zone received the National Sky Zone WOW Award in 2015 for best overall location in America.

Haffner was voted into the Indianapolis Business Journal’s top “Forty Under Forty” in 2010.

Haffner was confident enough in the Sky Zone business model to build a new location in Schererville just one year after acquiring the Fishers business, and last year he applied a few upgrades to both spots including a Warrior Course, which takes a cue from the popular “American Ninja Warrior” television show, a Warped Wall with platforms of varying heights, and Sky Joust, which takes place on pedestals over a foam pit. His locations now also feature lounges with wifi and additional rooms for private functions. “We’re wanting to age up our 6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atNoblesville.com

demographic a little bit to where we’ve got more than just younger kids and teens,” Haffner says. “You’ve got the 20-somethings and 30-somethings and even the parents of the kids wanting to participate now. We do corporate team-building events and sometimes they need a lot of space, so the additions will help with that.”

sports you can likely find him rooting on Purdue or Butler’s basketball squads. “The Sky Zone allows me to make my own schedule, and I’m usually busy coaching whatever sport my daughters throw at me,” he says. “My dad coached all my stuff, and I enjoy doing a lot of that for my kids now too.”

Still a big sports fan, Haffner spends much of his non-work time coaching his daughters’ sports teams (Lydia, 12, Vivian, 11, and Isla, 7), and if he’s not coaching

Haffner and his wife Mandi relocated to Zionsville in 2015 after spending several years in his hometown of Noblesville, and the couple has come to appreciate the sense

of community that pervades much of Indy’s north side. “I loved growing up in Noblesville, and I’m thankful I was raised in that small-town community type of setting,” he says. “I like the fact that Zionsville reminds me a lot of where I grew up. In many ways Noblesville will always feel like home to me.” Sky Zone in Fishers is located at 10080 E 121st. St #182. Visit them on Facebook or give them a call at 317-572-2999.

CLANCY’S INC. 120 Carey Dr. Noblesville, IN 46060 (317) 773-3284 clancysinc.com

Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Jamie Sangar

When you find a great local hangout that serves great food in a family-friendly atmosphere, you want it to stay around forever. For more than 50 years, Clancy’s restaurants of Noblesville have been that good ole’ go-to standard. It all started when Indiana Restaurant Hall of Fame member, Carl Fogelsong, opened Clancy’s Hamburgers in Noblesville in 1965. He chose Clancy the Keystone Cop as the mascot for his classic all-American style and friendly, hospitable demeanor. Since then, the Fogelsongs (Carl, his son Perry, daughters Annette and Becky, and Perry’s son Blake) have been giving the public a place to eat that they can count on. Blake Fogelsong is the Director of Operations for Clancy’s Inc.

Rivaling McDonald’s at a time when the chain didn’t establish itself in small towns, Clancy’s offered 100 percent pure beef hamburgers, the finest potatoes for French fries, and quality aged cheddar cheese. The restaurant earned a reputation not only for delivering top quality food at a reasonable price, but for having the best French Fries in town. Even more impressive, Clancy’s Hamburgers had the first double-drive thru in the Midwest and a 35-seat dining room. “Those were two innovations that were not generally incorporated by fast food operations until later years,” says Blake Fogelsong, Director of Operations for Clancy’s Inc. “Clancy’s also offered a wide variety in its sandwich offerings right from the beginning; another first in

the industry.” Only one original Clancy’s Hamburgers remains in Sidney, Ohio. Clancy’s Inc. continued to evolve, and in 1982, the next in its group of restaurants opened, Grindstone Charley’s, in Noblesville. The name was a nod to Grindstone City, Michigan, where they visited, and Charley for Carl Fogelsong’s best friend. Blake Fogelsong describes Grindstone’s as an American restaurant and bar serving scratch made quality food and drinks. “We cook from scratch and purchase products you don’t find in most casual restaurants due to higher quality and cost,” he says. “We’re still able to offer amazing value due to our size and volume. Our

pricing tends to compete with more casual restaurants, while our vibe and food quality is what you’d expect from classier joints.” Grindstone Charley’s features steaks, chicken, hand-crafted burgers, artisan salads and sandwiches, scratch made soups, along with a unique wine & cocktail selection. Grindstone Charley’s has four locations in Indiana (Speedway, Rockville Road, Kokomo and Lafayette), and another is on the way. The newest location will be in Westfield, at US 31 and State Road 32. It will serve as the anchor to the new Hampton Inn and is set to open November 2018. “We couldn’t be more excited about

10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atNoblesville.com

bringing Grindstone Charley’s back to Hamilton County and Westfield,” says Perry Fogelsong. Clancy’s Inc. will also be opening an expansion of Grindstone’s called Grindstone Public House. Located right in the heart of historic downtown Noblesville, the restaurant will feature favorites from Grindstone Charley’s, using ingredients from local farms and producers. Look for “The Topper” on the menu, a Clancy’s Hamburgers favorite. “With such a unique location in a historic building, we really have a chance to reinvent ourselves,” Blake says. For those with a little mangia on your minds, Clancy’s Inc. opened Michaelangelo’s Italian Bistro in the early 1990s. Michaelangelo’s serves a wide range of authentic Italian favorites from Italian subs to pasta dishes like spaghetti, lasagna, fettuccine and build your own pizzas. After 25 years, Michaelangelo’s Italian Bistro just underwent a complete re-design.

The Fogelsong’s passion and commitment “The modern new design and ultrachic aesthetic work perfectly for the space,” Blake to their restaurants extends to the Noblesville community as well. Not only Fogelsong says. do they source their food locally, Clancy’s The menu also got a makeover and features Inc. is a proud participant in Noblesville’s festivals and community events like the what Blake describes as “High energy and Noblesville Street Dance. carefully curated food and beverages.” Operating three vastly different brands of restaurants can be very challenging, but Clancy’s Inc. has mastered the art smoothly and successfully for more than 50 years. “Doing three different genres keeps things fun and exciting,” Blake says. “I get to do something new every day.” No matter how new each day is for Clancy’s Inc., the Fogelsongs still believe in Carl Fogelsong’s original secret to success. “To stay competitive, it takes great food, excellent hospitality and unique design.” It’s a secret that’s helped Clancy’s Inc. increase their sales by more than 10 percent each year.

Make Grindstone Charley’s, Michaelangelo’s or Clancy’s Hamburgers your favorite hangout. Grindstone Charley’s is located at 5383 West Rockville Rd Indianapolis, Indiana, 5822 Crawfordsville Rd, Speedway, Indiana, 3830 S LaFountain St in Kokomo, Indiana, and 3443 South St. in Lafayette, Indiana. The new Grindstone Charley’s will be located at 17470 Wheeler Road, Westfield, Indiana, and the Grindstone Public House will be located at 101 N. 10th Street,in Noblesville. Michaelangelo’s Italian Bistro is located at 550 Westfield Road in Noblesville, Indiana. If you’re in Ohio, stop in to the one remaining Clancy’s Hamburgers at 1250 Wapakoneta Ave Sidney, Ohio. Be a fan of Clancy’s Inc., and go on their Facebook page facebook.com/clancysinc/.

February is American Heart Month, but more commonly, the focus is on chocolate hearts instead of the hearts inside our bodies. Your significant other might hold the key to your heart this Valentine’s Day, but take a minute to ensure your actual heart will remain healthy for many Valentine’s Days to come. HOW CAN YOU DO THAT?

The simplest way is by talking with your doctor about a heart scan. WHAT IS A HEART SCAN?

“A heart scan gives doctors a picture of the heart’s arteries,” explains Dr. Sami Aasar, cardiologist at Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital. “A heart scan is used to detect calcium levels. The amount of calcium helps doctors determine the level of cholesterol buildup in the arteries, and that tells us if a person is at risk of having a heart attack.” Calcium buildup in the coronary arteries is an early sign of coronary heart disease (CHD). CHD is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. Over time, plaque can harden or rupture, leading to serious heart conditions like chronic chest pain, heart attack, heart failure and arrhythmias.

WHO SHOULD GET A HEART SCAN?

Heart scans are generally suggested by your physician based on factors that may put you at an increased risk for heart problems, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high body mass index, diabetes, smoking or a family history of aneurysm or heart disease. “Not everyone needs a heart scan,” Dr. Aasar says. “Generally speaking, if you are under 40 years of age, active and able to exercise without limitations, your risk for having heart disease is low.” WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A HEART SCAN?

All together—checking in, registering and getting the heart scan—the process usually takes less than 45 minutes. During the test, patients are hooked up to small electrodes and scanned using a computed tomography (CT) scanner. Once the heart scan is complete, your physician or cardiologist will recommend an appropriate plan of action to help reduce any risks you may have. Most plans include a diet and exercise program. Heart scans are typically conducted every five to 10 years on individuals ages 40+ with known risk factors.

However, anyone can request to have a heart scan. To learn more, talk with your doctor, or visit iuhealth.org/ heart-scan.

A HEART SCAN IS CONVENIENT, SIMPLE AND IT MIGHT CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

“Folks are often surprised to learn that 3,000 people walk through the doors of Prevail every year,” Ferguson says. Roughly

are more likely to be victims or perpetuators themselves, so we want to stop that cycle of abuse before it starts by showing them what a healthy relationship is.”

Kelly Growden, Primary Prevention Specialist at Prevail, regularly visits middle schools in the area to teach the “Safe Dates” program, a curriculum that discusses red flags of an unhealthy relationship, as well as boundary setting. “Teens need to make decisions about what’s okay and what’s not because when people don’t honor your boundaries, that can quickly turn dangerous,” Ferguson says. This is true of sexual and other boundaries. “Even deciding how much time you’re going to spend with someone or how quickly you’re expected to reply to a text message is important because when one person in the relationship thinks that the other person

owes them their time, it can get ugly. Plus, as you begin neglecting other relationships, it becomes isolating,” she says. Prevail staff are proactive in establishing a community that will not tolerate violent behavior. “We want to create safe, stable, nurturing environments for kids so that as they grow up, they don’t feel a need to exert power and control in their relationships,” Ferguson adds. Since February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month, several schools are planning an “Orange Out” during sporting events (orange is the color that symbolizes teen violence awareness). Noblesville High students are creating fleece tie blankets for those who participate in Prevail’s support groups. HSE students are producing a video project to spread the word about Prevail. Westfield is coordinating a Parent Night to encourage parents to initiate conversations with their teens about such difficult topics. Growden says that parents are a big factor in preventing dating violence. “They can learn the warning signs, talk early and often, and stay engaged,” says Growden, noting that 45 percent of parents have not discussed teen dating violence with their children in the last 12 months because they think their kids are too young to explore dating, they don’t know what to say, or they assume their children will learn about it through experience. “There are lots of great conversation guides available from groups like Love Is Respect, Break the Cycle and Futures Without Violence.” Ferguson, who has been a domestic violence advocate for 12 years, insists that Prevail is all about empowerment. “By shining a light on this topic, we give an opportunity for those to seek help instead of suffering through it,” she says. “We’re helping people find their power because everyone deserves a safe place.” For more information, visit prevailinc.com. Prevail is located at 1100 South 9th Street, Suite 100, Noblesville or give them a call at 317-773-6942.

Winter is still far from over. You may be considering your local sledding hill as a means to keep you occupied, but after a few climbs, you might be ready to call it quits. Fortunately, a new tubing experience in Hamilton County offers not just a thrilling ride down the slope but also a lift up the hill. The Koteewi Run Seasonal Slopes is located at Strawtown Koteewi Park in Noblesville. The 750 acre park is home to miles of

walking and biking trails, wetlands, prairies, an Equestrian Center and a large 40-foot hill, which now houses Hamilton County’s newest winter adventure: tubing slopes. Brian Cooley, owner of Outdoor Excursions Incorporated and White River Canoe Company, heard the park was looking for someone to create this winter tubing experience. “We have a lot of experience in cycling people through outdoor recreational events,” he says.

After agreeing to the project, Cooley hired a consultant from Perfect North Slopes and a service company to provide staff to work the slopes. He even hired a contractor to groom the snow each evening after guests leave. But what if Central Indiana encounters a dry spell in these winter months? Fortunately, when Hamilton County Parks and Recreation created the park’s hill, it designed pipes to carry water from the lake to the hill. Koteewi Run is capable of producing 12-18 inches of snow per hour, allowing for plenty of fresh snow

on the slopes. If snow begins to thaw, a contractor reforms the snow to keep the slopes smooth. “If you’ve been to Paoli Peaks, the tubing hill itself is very similar but not two hours away from home,” says Cooley, who hopes to keep the slopes open into March. Depending on the day, riders can purchase passes for different amounts of time and for different rates. The slopes are open long past dark, even until midnight on Saturdays. Koteewi Run’s website allows guests to purchase passes as well as print off waiver forms. The experience is in high demand, so Brian recommends visiting at opening or at dinner time. Koteewi Run is a great experience for a local winter adventure. After buying tickets, staff helps riders sit on their tubes and hook to the tow line, which pulls tubes to the top of the 40-foot hill. If there is a long wait line, riders can easily walk up the hill. Riders can slide down the slopes for as many times as they wish and even stop at the concession stand for snacks and hot chocolate. The slopes are open to anyone who can handle their own tubes — from the young to the elderly. In fact, the slopes recently welcomed a local retirement home and one very special rider — a 101-year-old woman — who took a ride not just once but nearly a dozen times. And how fast do the tubes go? Well, Cooley estimates between 35-50 milesper-hour. “All you need to do is stand out there and listen to first-time riders screaming and the laughing,” he says. “You’re pretty much at the mercy of gravity and the shape of the lanes. If people come out and see it, they’ll find it remarkable that this exists so close to home.” To purchase tickets, print and sign waver forms and check opening and closing times, visit koteewi-adventures.com. Koteewi Run is located at 11800 Koteewi Drive in Noblesville. 22 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atNoblesville.com
