Our goal every single day is to ensure that our community is a safe, open and welcoming community - a community focused on helping out everyone who is a resident or visitor here. Last year, we launched a paramedicine program called NobleAct. This program utilizes current community, health care and public safety resources to proactively identify and assist the public with non-emergency needs, health issues, and strives to maintain a healthy community. NobleAct is a multipronged approach based on the Community Health Assessment, public safety data analysis, trending issues, stakeholder needs and citizen feedback. In addition to the people and places, Noblesville has so many amenities and reasons to make you feel at home. As mayor, I hope that you’ll take some time to explore our city and discover for yourself why Noblesville is a unique place and a growing community — one that has been nationally recognized as a great place to live, work, play and retire. Finally, we would love to hear from you! Please reach out to me or a member of my team with questions or suggestions that you may have for enhancing our city for current and future residents. Sincerely, Chris Jensen, Mayor

PEARL OF A BUSINESS

NEW OWNERS CONTINUE A TRADITION OF SUPERIOR SERVICE AT SMITH’S JEWELERS Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Amy Payne

Smith’s Jewelers, located on the downtown Square on North 9th Street, is celebrating its 75th year in downtown Noblesville. Although it recently changed ownership, its tradition of outstanding customer service continues. The new owners, father-and-son team Phil and Robby Hieser, have many years of industry experience between them, and are committed to providing a seamless transition. In 1946 Claude Shane, a member of the family that founded Shane Co., bought several jewelry stores in Indiana. He named 14 / 2021 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

each one Smith’s Jewelers, after a store he had purchased in Bedford. By 1970 he was ready to sell off his smaller stores, and O’Dell and Esther Lakes became the owners of the Noblesville shop. The Lakes owned Smith’s for nearly 50 years before O’Dell told Robby that he was retiring. “My dad, Phil, has worked in the industry for years,” Robby Hieser says. “When I was 19 and just out of high school, I got a job as a polisher. I thought it was just something temporary until I figured out what I would do, but after a year I fell in love with the job. Because I was so interested in it, I had a fast apprenticeship, and after two years I became a jeweler.”

Jewelry polishers work with various tools, both electric and handheld, bringing gemstones or precious metals such as silver, gold and platinum to their full potential. Their work includes removing scratches or dull coatings to repair and restore items. In contrast, a jeweler not only sells jewelry, but also takes the polisher’s job several steps further. “When I became a jeweler, I started providing two services to people,” Hieser says. “I began creating custom designs and doing metal fabrication. I also got the opportunity to repair broken pieces of jewelry that meant a lot to people. I went to work at Smith’s after I had been employed in corporate stores because I wanted to work in a place where the employees cared about what they were doing, and put people first before profit. Smith’s is a full-service jewelry store. Repairs, including watches, are completed on the upstairs level, and the retail area is on the street level of the building. The shop carries sought-after jewelry brands such as Simon G and JYE International. “In 2019, O’Dell told me that he planned to retire in a year and he wanted to give me plenty of time to find another job if that was what I wanted,” Hieser says. “I told him I would stay with him to the end. Then, a few months later, my dad and I found a way to buy the business.” Hieser has noticed a few recent wedding ring trends. “Yellow gold is starting to come back, while white gold has always been strong,” he says. “People are moving toward a vintage look, and we are also seeing some couples wanting minimalist settings. We use computers to design rings to any customer specifications.” Although Smith’s uses modern methods for computer-aided designs, its custom rings and other pieces of jewelry are made with the traditional lost-wax casting method. A computer-generated wax replica of a design is used to create a ceramic mold. During a heating process the wax melts away leaving a void, in which liquid metal is poured. 2021 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 15

A video, titled “The History of Smith’s Jewelers,” was recently produced to honor O’Dell and Esther Lakes, and cites the many contributions they made to the Noblesville community. It also introduces the Hiesers as new owners. It can be viewed on YouTube under the video’s title. “Our jewelers are top notch,” Hieser says. “We pride ourself on craftsmanship. We know that a ring or piece of jewelry has vows, stories and memories associated with it. With this understanding we are able to take extra care with what people give us to fix, or what we can create for them. A woman came in who had lost her husband to COVID. She wanted to turn their wedding rings into a heart to wear

over a necklace. The memories she shared about their three-week trip to Alaska gave us meaning, and enabled us to make a beautiful united heart for her.” Hieser adds that the goal of the owners is to honor the legacy of O’Dell and Esther Lakes, and offer excellent customer care. “We realize that a piece of jewelry like a ring is so much more,” he says. “It represents a lifetime of memories. We are committed to continue caring about the people we serve.” Smith’s Jewelers is located on the downtown Noblesville Square at 98 North 9th Street. FOR THE BIRDS

WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED PROVIDES PRODUCTS FOR BIRD HOBBYISTS AND ENTHUSIASTS Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Ron Wise

With spring weather approaching, opportunities for outdoor hobbies like bird watching increase. Wild Birds Unlimited offers products and advice for the novice to experienced bird watcher. Charity Rausch previously worked in retail buying, but felt the need for something different. “I was planning inventory and things like that,” Rausch says. “I worked for the Finish Line in Indianapolis’ corporate office, but ultimately left to teach at Indiana University in retail studies. I was a visiting lecturer. I was teaching buying, inventory management, visual merchandising everything retail-wise.” Rausch was commuting from Zionsville to Bloomington for work. “I had a little boy, and it just wasn’t working,” Rausch says. “The commute wasn’t working. My husband was traveling. I started looking for something a little more

local and I found the Wild Birds Unlimited corporate office.”

bought an existing store,” Rausch says.

Rausch moved the location from the Carmel-Westfield area to Noblesville.

The stores already have a loyal following, but during the pandemic, Rausch’s business has increased with new customers.

While many businesses suffered during the Rausch worked in the franchise office in Carmel pandemic, Rausch witnessed her business grow. for about four years. Ultimately, she decided to own and run her own franchise location. “I credit a large part of the growth over the last year to the pandemic,” Rausch “When I opened the first location in 2014, it says. “What I mean by that is many people are working from home, so birding, bird was a bit of a learning curve for me,” Rausch says. “I had worked in retail but never owned watching and feeding birds has increased tremendously. People are trying to find a business. Going from working in retail to hobbies while they’re stuck at home.” operating a retail business was a transition.”

“Four months after we bought the store, we moved,” Rausch says. “We just moved down the street, but it changed our address to a Noblesville address. The move gave us better visibility. We were in a perfect location, and it jumped our business forward.” Rausch opened a second location on 96th Street in Indianapolis in 2019. “We wanted to expand our business, so we 2021 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 17

“We have so many new people coming in who just got into the hobby in the last year,” Rausch says. “It’s been enjoyable for us. Not only are our regular customers home more, doing more birding, but we’ve added more new hobbyists.” Rausch had to change her business model during the shutdown to cope with her physical stores being closed.

“Our whole business changed,” Rausch says. “We launched our online store in 2020 at both locations. It helped us survive because our customers could still order online and pick up with our curbside service. It’s been so popular we’re planning to continue that service for our customers. Our clients have been so supportive.” Wild Birds offers delivery services as well. All products are pulled locally from the stores. “One thing that sets us apart is our service,” Rausch says. “Our staff is so knowledgeable on birds and the hobby of birding. They’re there to offer suggestions and advice to our customers. They’re more like experts on local birds. Guests can come in and get a lot of verbal information because they’re not just salespeople. They’re involved in the hobby as well.” During the stay-at-home orders, Rausch was able to keep any employee who wanted to work. “We did have some employees who opted not to work due to health reasons, which we understood,” Rausch says. “We were also able to keep anyone who wanted to come in busy with online orders and delivery.” Rausch stresses a few differences between her business and many big-box stores. “Our food is different than what you would get at Target, Walmart or Meijer,” Rausch says. “Bird food isn’t their main business. We get all our food from a local farmer in Ohio. There is no waste in our food. We don’t put seeds in our food that birds won’t eat. A lot of other companies add fillers to their food, like millet. It keeps their prices down, but the birds won’t eat it. People forget birds are a lot like us. If something doesn’t look good to them, they won’t eat it.” Wild Birds Unlimited is located at 14753 Hazel Dell Crossing, Suite 400 in Noblesville. HAMILTON COUNTY INDIANA

EXPLORE THESE PARKS AND TRAILS IN HAMILTON COUNTY

Photos provided by Hamilton County Tourism

Spring has sprung, and it’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. Have you explored the 60+ parks in Hamilton County, or the 600+ miles of trails? Here are a few notable parks and trails to explore in your own backyard.

CENTRAL PARK

FLAT FORK CREEK PARK

FISHERS This is the park that remains a “hidden gem” that shouldn’t be any longer. Flat Fork Creek Park opened in December 2015 and features nature trails, a boardwalk, a mountain bike course and three treehouses tucked in the woods. Climb to the top of the 60-foot sledding hill for panoramic views.

CARMEL The picturesque lagoon, boardwalk and bridge at Central Park make it a popular spot for nature photography, but it’s also a great place to get your steps in. The paved pathway loops around the water and connects to Central Park East Woods, with tree trunk carvings of forest animals hidden along the trails and access to the Monon Greenway.

WESTFIELD With four miles of wooded trails, this is a favorite for families. Explore nature on your own in the great outdoors or visit the Nature Center to learn more about Indiana’s woodlands and the importance of preserving plants and animals in their natural habitat.

NOBLESVILLE Fun fact: this is the county’s only remaining covered bridge, constructed in 1870 and later restored in 1999. Potter’s Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a centerpiece for the 66 acre park surrounding the historic icon.

RITCHEY WOODS NATURE PRESERVE

FISHERS Ritchey Woods is one of only two state designated nature preserves in Hamilton County. Visitors are welcome dawn to dusk to hike, bird watch or simply spend time in nature. Remember to stay on the trail at all times, as this land is protected.

FOREST PARK

COOL CREEK PARK & NATURE CENTER

POTTER’S BRIDGE PARK

NOBLESVILLE Chances are you’ve heard of this 150-acre park - after all, it’s one of Hamilton County’s oldest parks, dating back to 1925. There are plenty of things to do for families at Forest Park, including a miniature golf course, playground and pool.

STRAWTOWN KOTEEWI PARK

NOBLESVILLE This 750-acre park is a popular destination for endurance athletes, hikers and bikers. But, you don’t need to be training for a triathlon to enjoy the nature trails, wetlands and prairies.

TRAILS

Did you know Hamilton County has 600+ miles of trails? Each city has its own urban MACGREGOR PARK pathway, winding through downtown WESTFIELD districts and scenic spots. Check out the Tucked off of US-31 and Highway 38, Monon Greenway in Carmel, Westfield MacGregor Park offers three miles of trails and Sheridan plus the Midland Trace ideal for hiking and walking. The paths wind Trail (Westfield), White River Greenway through native prairies, open fields and (Noblesville) and the Nickel Plate Trail wetlands, making this a perfect habitat for (Fishers), coming soon. wildlife such as birds and deer. 2021 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 19

THANK YOU ESSENTIAL WORKERS March marked the one-year anniversary since The World Health Organization declared a new respiratory virus, COVID-19, a pandemic. The past 12-month period has been one of the most challenging in living history for the public, frontline healthcare/ essential workers, and society. Yet, despite the ongoing pandemic, these workers were called upon daily to meet our basic needs during the COVID-19 shutdown and helped keep the world moving forward. It is with recognition and deep appreciation that we extend a heartfelt thank you to all the essential and frontline workers that worked daily. You are the workers who represent the medical and healthcare, telecommunications, education, information technology systems, defense, food and agriculture, transportation and logistics, energy, water and wastewater, law enforcement, and public works industries. SURFACE SOLUTIONS

O’MALIA’S HARD SURFACE RESTORATION CAN HANDLE EVEN THE TOUGHEST JOBS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

John O’Malia, owner of O’Malia’s Hard Surface Restoration in Westfield, says he learned the value of high-quality customer service from his family. His uncle Joe owned the O’Malia’s grocery chain, which had several locations in Indianapolis and Carmel. His parents, Helen and Bill O’Malia, owned O’Malia’s Living in Carmel, which offers products for fireplaces and outdoor spaces. “I learned that how you treat the customer is the key to running a successful business,” O’Malia says. “It’s what the customer remembers, and it determines whether or not they want to continue doing business with you. It was ingrained in me as I was growing up.” O’Malia says it always helps to go the extra mile. “You always want to do some extra work that will make them remember you,” O’Malia says. “I’ve been doing that since we started.”

sure every customer is happy. “We really want our customers to trust that we will do a great job,” O’Malia says. “We work quickly, and we are also very affordable. We can take on any hard surface that needs cleaned. We can do outstanding work on grout, tile, brick, natural stone, concrete, stucco and travertine.”

bars and retail stores.

“For residential properties, we can do kitchen and bathroom floors, the kitchen counter tops, your hallways and your entryways,” he says. “We also do a great “We want satisfied customers to tell their job on your showers, pool decks, garage family and friends about us,” O’Malia says. floors, patios and other areas of your home. “We also like to tell people that we do a complete hard surface cleaning and restoration We can really get the tough areas like your driveways and sidewalks too.” process. We do a pre-treatment, where we apply a deep-cleaning solution that loosens up O’Malia adds that the company sees a lot of any dirt, grime, oils and bacteria that may be repeat commercial business, which includes on the surface. It’s very thorough.” tile floors, brick and stone floors, lobbies, offices and entryways. The next step is pressure cleaning. O’Malia adds that return business has been a long-term goal.

“We use contained, high-pressure water to penetrate the toughest areas, and we use up to 280 degrees of heat,” O’Malia says. “We also do a great vacuum where our process removes the soil and dirty waters off of your floors.”

O’Malia started the company in January of O’Malia says the company services homes, 2016, and says he and his staff strive to make apartments, restaurants, office buildings, 30 / 2021 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

“We recently cleaned the Chick-fil-A on U.S. 31 in Westfield, and were complimented on our work,” O’Malia says. “In our commercial work, we do hallways, restrooms, kitchens, counters and other areas of a commercial business. We use different detergents for commercial properties. We use pressure washers that are very effective.”

O’Malia is proud that the company uses a simple, nontoxic and eco-friendly cleaning solution to agitate the dirt ingrained into a floor. He says this is much more effective than simply mopping. “We have a floor-cleaning tool that applies heated water at the perfect cleaning pressure,” he says. “It keeps the floors from getting damaged. As the water is being applied to the floor, it’s also vacuum-extracted at five gallons per minute, leaving the surface almost completely dried.” Tile and grout in homes or businesses are also easily taken care of. “We take tile sealants very seriously because they really protect your floors from stains and dirt,” O’Malia says. “The sealants make your floor look great because they add color to your floors. The sealants add a nice shine and gloss to your floors. We have received some nice compliments about our work on tile and grout. We can also work on any natural stones you have. We can clean any hard surface. We clean roofs, and we can clean any natural stone.” O’Malia says grout sealants are also important. “We can apply an excellent clear sealant that doesn’t alter the appearance of your floor,” he says. “It really penetrates deep into the grout, forming a protective barrier. We also use a great color sealant on grout lines. Kitchen floors really get a lot of foot traffic, and the sealants are a solid way to make your tiles look great.” O’Malia says he is typically on job sites, doing and supervising work. “I want to ensure that our customers are very happy with the work we do so they will want to hire us again, or tell their family and friends,” O’Malia says. THE THIN LINE: SANDY BURNETTE

NOBLESVILLE SCHOOL NURSE ANSWERS THE CALL OF DUTY A concerned parent calls the Noblesville High School nurse line, unsure if their teenager’s temperature means COVID-19. A reassuring voice on the other end of the line asks questions, takes time to listen and consider, and gives the parent some comfort in her answer, even if that answer is, “He might test positive.”

Burnette, her husband Jeremy, and their four kids, Evan, Aidan, Abby and Izzy, moved to Noblesville 11 years ago. After only a year in residence, Jeremy was killed in a motorcycle accident. At the time Burnette was working as a nurse at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, but she knew she needed a job that was more conducive to being a single parent. That was when she started as Noblesville East Middle School’s nurse. After seven years at the middle school, she moved to Noblesville High School, where she has played an integral role in the school system. “I love being involved in the school system because I’m part of the community,” Burnette says. “I can make a connection with the kids on another level as a parent, because I see what they go through on a day-to-day basis inside and outside of school.” When schools shut down in March of 2020, school nurses were given the option of aiding at hospitals and clinics, or going on unpaid leave at home. “As a single mom, pay is pretty important, but I also knew I needed to do what I could to help,” Burnette says. “I jumped right in and asked what they needed.”

She was sent straight to Indianapolis’ COVID hotbed, working as After more than 12 years as a nurse, Sandy Burnette has developed a clinical helper in the COVID intensive care unit at Community a professional instinct to sense the answer to many patients’ health Hospital North. issues. Now, one year removed from the start of the pandemic in the U.S., she has developed an instinct with regard to COVID as well. “It was the worst place I could imagine going, but that’s where I went,” she says. “You get to the point where you hope you’re wrong, but you end up being right most of the time,” she says. Working there for 10 weeks not only gave Burnette insight and knowledge on the virus, but also lit a fire under her to help keep 40 / 2021 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

COVID from her school and community. She returned to the high school in July ready to work with administrators on plans for social distancing, masks, sanitizing and preparing students for some semblance of a return to school. “Prior to COVID I was 100% with the kids all the time, but this year I’ve become like a triage nurse, answering phone calls, educating parents and students, etcetera,” Burnette says. “I have two great nurses that are working with me at the high school to allow me to be in this role.” With the rollout of the vaccine, Burnette recently returned to Community North, only this time to assist with vaccinations. “I am so excited seeing everyone getting vaccinated,” she says. “Returning to the hospital with a more positive spin on things has given me a morale boost, like we are going to beat COVID.”

CARDON OFFERS COMFORT AND COMMUNITY

Story & Photos Provided

Social isolation poses serious health risks, especially for older people. It significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death and is associated with a 50% increased risk of dementia. Poor social relationships are also associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke as well as higher rates of depression, anxiety and suicide. Sometimes it’s hard to pull yourself out of the loneliness you are feeling, especially right now in a world forcing us to distance from each other. But just because we are physically distant doesn’t mean we can’t still find and feel community with others. That’s where CarDon comes in to help residents and their loved ones find meaningful connections.

From providing creative activities to coordinating family visits — yes, the community is beginning to open back up for visitation — the Copper Trace staff makes sure residents never feel neglected or alone.

FIND CAREGIVERS, NEIGHBORS, NEW FAMILY MEMBERS At Harbour Manor & The Lodge, residents receive a greeting every day from staff members, who offer a warm smile, a comforting word and a health and wellness check, both physically and mentally.

The dietary staff provides delicious — and nutritious — meals three times a day. And depending on the ever-changing regulations surrounding COVID-19, residents may be able to socially distance while eating and STAY SOCIALLY ENGAGED chatting with other residents in the dining Being part of a CarDon community like room. But even if the dining room isn’t Harbour Manor & The Lodge Family-First open, the dietary staff serves up a healthy Senior Living Community helps seniors stay meal made with pure love. socially active. This community is a collaborative environment. It’s like a big family really. Every day residents have the chance to interact with nurses, dietary associates, the life enrichment team, physical or occupational therapists and other residents.

Either way — you’ll get a hearty helping of human interaction with every meal. Community is shown when team members engage with, provide emotional support to and know each resident by name. Harbour Manor is a family to go to. To talk. To listen. To smile. To care. 42 / 2021 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

REST ASSURED Human beings were created to be in community with one another. At Harbour Manor and The Lodge, your loved one will be surrounded by neighbors as caring as family. You can rest easy knowing that residents and staff members are providing company and good cheer throughout the day. The Lodge at Harbour Manor is an ideal home for seniors, as it allows them to maintain their independence with the assurance of assistance when needed. We’re living in uncertain times, but one thing’s for certain about Harbour Manor and The Lodge — your loved one will be in good hands here. They will be cared for on a daily basis, and also when more immediate health needs arise. And they’ll have fellow residents in their support system.

STAY CAREFREE WITH COMMUNITY Through thick and thin, the staff at Harbour Manor & The Lodge will keep your loved one’s spirits high. No matter their age, ability or experience, residents are made to feel special, attended to, cared for and loved. And that is how CarDon helps each resident find community.
