o hear Brian Clarke tell it, D1 Training Finch Creek is more than just another gym - it provides a results-based, customized training experience. “If you’re passionate and serious about athletic training, we’re here to help you with a customized plan in a positive, team-like setting,” says Clarke, who serves as general manager and head performance coach at the D1 Training facility, and formerly worked as head strength and conditioning coordinator at Noblesville High School. In December of last year, D1 Training leaders secured space that had been empty for several years inside Finch Creek Fieldhouse on Boden Road in Noblesville. “We start by meeting with each client and discussing their goals, but we go deeper than that and ask you what your ‘why’ is,” says Clarke, who played baseball at Butler University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and exercise science, as well as a master’s degree in school administration. “We ask what you are really trying to do here. Also, we really want a family environment, and to have a community and fellowship within our walls.” The facility welcomes kids and adults alike, and the staff continually meets with
clients every couple of weeks to revisit and analyze physical and athletic goals each one might have. “Anybody who wants to compete and be held accountable, in a team atmosphere, is welcome to come in,” Clarke says. The D1 Training Finch Creek team includes Coach Kray’Shawn Brewer, a former college football athlete and National Arena League signee, Coach Achzionna Riding, a Butler grad and Division 1 track and field athlete, and Recruiter Kiley McCollough, a Wittenberg University grad and certified personal trainer. D1 Training was founded in Nashville, Tennessee, by Will Bartholomew, a former football player for the University of Tennessee who saw a need in the Nashville area for a strength and conditioning concept akin to those found at Division 1 collegiate athletic programs. Bartholomew founded D1 Training to provide customized, sports-based training to help a wide range of ages groups achieve both sports and general fitness goals. The D1 Training gym franchise now has locations throughout the country including two in Indiana. “I was really impressed with what Will had built and their footprint,” Clarke says. “The D1 model recognizes that no matter
what your training concept is, there’s a framework you have to use to be successful - that includes things like a proper dynamic warm-up, proper movement prep, some strength component in there, lateral and athletic movements, and cool-downs. Then, how you plug that in, and with what movements, will be different for each person.” D1 Training Finch Creek offers oneon-one training as well as group fitness options, and scholastic training is typically broken down by age group - rookie (ages 7 to 11), developmental (ages 12 to 14), prep (high school ages), and overtime (student-athletes who might have specific training goals). Overtime training is
6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atNoblesville.com
typically offered in groups of three or four and is geared toward each client’s sport - even toward specific positions within a sport. Adults can take advantage of the D1 bootcamp, which Clarke says typically burns 600 to 1,000 calories. “We also have our adult strength program, for those adults who are saying, ‘I’m done running around, but I like to lift weights and I want to get some resistance training,’” Clarke says. In response to the coronavirus outbreak, D1 Training Finch Creek leaders are taking a few key safety measures, including constant sanitation of surfaces, social distancing measures, as well as an ionization unit that is integrated into the facility’s HVAC system. The system is essentially set up to deactivate harmful airborne substances including viruses, mold, allergens and bacteria. Leading up to D1 Training Finch Creek’s official August 9 opening, the staff has offered free seven-day trials for those interested. The first day of the trial includes a facility tour, discussion of fitness goals, and a basic physical assessment. D1 is also offering a money-back program, whereby members can break their contract and get refunded, as long as those members commit to eight sessions in one month. “The reason we offer the money-back piece is that we want members to give it a little time, and see the results,” Clarke says. “It’s not a cookie-cutter way of doing things here. If you go to Subway and get a sub, you get a certain amount of meatballs - but maybe you want more. That’s kind of how we look at it - we can really customize and cater to our athletes’ needs.” D1 Training Finch Creek is located at 16289 Boden Road in Noblesville. For more information including program details and a scheduling page, visit d1training.com and call 317-526-5146. atNoblesville.com / AUGUST 2020 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 7
Owner Stephen Craig
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Kerch Creative
Deep in the heart of old Noblesville, Adrienes Flowers & Gifts has delighted customers for years with its unique spin on flower arrangements. Owners Stephen and Moffett Craig strive to offer floral products that personally touch their recipients. Truly a family business, it was owned for more than a decade by Moffett’s parents and brother before being purchased by the Craigs more than 30 years ago. Stephen previously had a career raising livestock and Moffett, who is currently a part-time instructor at IUPUI, was teaching when her parents Stanley and Jessie
Robinson ran the flower shop with her brother Doug. During the 12 years that the Robinsons owned the business, the Craigs often helped out. After gradually learning and absorbing information about the floral shop, the Craigs purchased the store in 1989. “We are just getting started,” Stephen Craig says. “As for the name, Jessie wanted something that would come early in the phone book or be at the front of a listing, so she decided on Adrienes Flowers & Gifts.” Throughout the years, the Craigs and their long-time staff have worked to develop a unique approach to the flower business. Each year they attend classes to learn about
current designs and trends. They offer a “Deal of the Day” arrangement as a way to expose people to uncommon flowers. During high school prom time, the shop produces more than one hundred corsages at a time, and each one is different. “We love to find something that is close to someone’s heart and work from there,” Craig says. “We once used a trophy fish in a funeral spray, and it looked like it was swimming through water vegetation. We’ve made a blanket out of flowers to put on a racehorse, as well as an arrangement completely out of Minnesota Viking colors. The biggest change over the years is the availability of all kinds of flowers. We are able to get them very fresh from a

wholesaler in Indianapolis.” Customers can get an online look inside the shop every Tuesday when Craig hosts a Facebook Live event. Topics have included how to care for outdoor plants, as well as good-humored demonstrations on how to make your own flower arrangements at home. Any of the items inside the shop such as wind chimes, angel figurines and even quilts can be incorporated into an arrangement. “These days people seem to order flowers at the last minute,” Craig says. “Most of the time we can deliver them in the same day. We deliver all day locally and make runs into Indianapolis two times a day. Sometimes words don’t say enough flowers can do a lot of talking.” Adrienes Flowers & Gifts is located at 1249 East Conner Street in Noblesville. LOCAL NURSE RECALLS EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERING BUY PERSONAL VEHICLES IN NEW YORK CITY DURING COVID-19 OUTBREAK AT GOVERNMENT PRICING Crushed by the rejection, she walked away but the dream still simmered. Three years later she received an email stating that the Army accepts nurses until age 46, so she joined the Army Reserve at age 44. Five years later, in 2013, Petit met a Navy Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing recruiter who spotted her in her scrubs Photographer / BriAnna Seefeldt while she was getting a new identification badge, and he inquired about what she did. When Robin Petit was four years old, she When she told him she was a nurse working told her dad that when she grew up, she was in an operating room, he invited her to join going to become a nurse because she wanted the Navy. to bring babies into the world instead of watching people go out of the world. “It was like it was meant to be,” says Petit,
would be doing, exactly where she would be going or how long she’d be there. She began packing and within 48 hours, she and 200 fellow Navy volunteers were in New York City. Within 96 hours they were in area hospitals, spread out across seven of the city’s 11 public hospitals. Petit, who was stationed at the North Central Bronx Hospital, worked 12-hour shifts caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients. She and her colleagues started a prone team, for which they turned patients onto their abdomens to allow their lungs to expand, thereby improving breathing. Though she was continually caring for coronavirus patients, Petit never feared getting infected.

who immediately transferred.
Now, she works as both an OR nurse for the Navy and a nurse practitioner on the civilian side. In fact, Petit had just begun For the longest time, she had another dream working at Community Health Network - to join the Navy. When she was 41, she and Carmel Specialty Surgery Center when spoke to a recruiter who turned her away the Navy called her in early April to ask because he said she was too old. if she would be willing to volunteer to go to New York City and treat COVID-19 “I told him, ‘I’m a nurse. We work until we’re patients. Without hesitation, she agreed, dead,’” Petit says. even though she had no idea what she

“We were more concerned about going in and providing the best care we possibly could for these patients,” Petit says, her voice cracking with emotion as she recalls the experience. “I’m very proud of every single person I worked with. It was an amazing group of people.”
12 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atNoblesville.com
Though the days were exhausting, Petit found comfort in daily victories. Each time a patient was extubated, the hospital played a certain Katy Perry song, and each time someone was discharged from the hospital, the staff played Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York”. “Whenever we heard those songs, we celebrated,” Petit says. There were, of course, sad stories too. One of Petit’s vivid memories is sitting with one of her patients as his health declined. “I prayed with him and held his hand as I watched his heart rate go down, then up, then down again,” says Petit, who was with the patient when he passed. Due to its highly contagious nature, COVID-19 patients could not receive visitors, and those who were intubated couldn’t talk. Nurses facilitated video chats with families on iPads, so that loved ones
could feel connected even though they could not share the same physical space. “That was very emotional,” Petit says. “We also had a priest that was a reservist who gave last rites to a patient whose family was frantic. The fact that people couldn’t come in and say goodbye to their loved ones was so heartbreaking.” Originally Petit thought she might be in a mobile unit, traveling to various hot spots like New York City, Louisiana or California. Ultimately, she stayed put in New York City until early June. Once cases and hospitalizations began decreasing, and hospital operations were under control, she was sent home. Though Petit, a Noblesville resident since 2008, was eager to return home to her husband Van and their grandchildren, she was happy to have served. “Honestly, it was a true honor and privilege taking care of these people,” Petit says. “I’m also grateful to have had the opportunity to
serve with so many amazing people.” Should hot spots pop up again, there is always a chance that she will be asked to volunteer again. “Once you’re mobilized, you get a certain amount of time where they can’t deploy or mobilize you again unless you waive that time,” Petit says. “Given the circumstances, I think a lot of people would waive that time and volunteer again.”

It’s important to stay hydrated. When the temperature rises, our bodies sweat, and the more we sweat, the more water our bodies lose. If we don’t replenish with fluids, we can become dehydrated, which when mixed when high temperatures can cause heat exhaustion or fainting. Finally, remember to always check your backseat before getting out of the vehicle. Children and pets should never be left in an unattended car.
Be aware of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion is recognizable by heavy sweating, nausea and paleness. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, move to a shaded cool area, remove tight or heavy clothing, sip water and locate a cool cloth. Heat stroke is more dangerous and includes a high body temperature of 103° or higher, fast and strong pulse, nausea, confusion and/or loss of consciousness. Smooth Sailing LOCAL COUPLE OVERCOMES OBSTACLES AS PORTSIDE MARINE OWNERS Writer / Trisha Turner Photographer / Eli Beaverson
In May of 2019, Jarret Silagyi and his wife Lauren purchased Portside Marine Sales and Service in Cicero. Within a year, a fire had destroyed the boat dealership, the Silagyis were battling serious injuries from a boating accident, and Jarret no longer had his corporate job. That doesn’t count the pandemic that seemingly brought the world to a standstill earlier this year. However, the Silagyis’ luck finally turned when Jarret learned there might be a new
home available for Portside Marine. That home that would allow the boat dealership to join forces with similar business a few miles away. The two boat dealerships have been serving the Morse, Geist and surrounding areas for over 75 years combined.
And business is booming. As a statedesignated essential business, boat sales and service have been in high demand despite the coronavirus pandemic.
“A lot of people didn’t expect us to make it through the fire,” Jarret Silagyi says. “I look back and say, ‘Well, this wasn’t the easiest path, but here we are. And we’re happy to be here.’”
However, the future didn’t look so rosy to Silagyi as he raced up Olio Road from his home in Fishers on October 14, 2019. He was heading to a flame-engulfed Portside Marine at its prior location in Cicero. He didn’t have to guess what he might find when he arrived. The billows of smoke, visible in the sky even as he traveled from miles away, told the story.
In June of this year, Portside Marine moved to the Lakeview Marina property, and the Silagyis own the separate businesses located on North Hague Road in Noblesville.
“It’s been busier than ever,” Silagyi says.
“It was a gut-wrenching half-hour drive,

seeing smoke and knowing it was the dealership,” Silagyi says. The fire, caused by a combination of an electric spark and fuel vapors in Portside’s service area, destroyed the business. Employees were safe, and Portside never closed. Another boat dealership owner, Jeff Lingenfelter, offered any help that his business, Lakeview Marina, could provide. Lakeview assisted with getting the word out about Portside’s plans to remain open, moving boats off Portside’s damaged property, providing extra tools, and even referring customers to Portside. One year prior, Jarret had ended the limousine and bus company he’d owned while also serving as chief operating officer of a paper-shredding company. In the fall of 2019 he and Lauren were battling back after seeing their business go up in flames before their eyes, but bad luck wasn’t done with them yet. On New Year’s Eve in 2019, a boating accident in Florida left the Silagyis with serious injuries that kept them in the area recovering for two months. Then, in March of 2020 - right around the time the coronavirus pandemic kicked into high gear - the Silagyis found themselves searching for a new home for Portside, when state officials alerted them that they planned to use Portside’s property as the location for a bridge. Then Jarret’s corporate job ended. A chance conversation with a friend helped the couple turn the corner. That friend said he knew someone who might be interested in selling his business. And that someone was Lingenfelter, who’d been such a good partner following the fire at Portside. Portside had found a new home. Today Portside Marine and Lakeview Marina each remain open. They both deal in new and used boats at the same Noblesville address, but the businesses are separate. Portside sells many fiberglass 18 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atNoblesville.com

boats, and Lakeview’s offerings include pontoons and personal watercraft. “Hopefully customers will see a benefit to our being together, all on one property,” Silagyi says. While the Silagyis own both businesses, the Lingenfelter family, who opened Lakeview in 1983, remain involved. Jeff and his wife Anita are retiring in August, but there are still five Lingenfelters among the Lakeview staff.
“Both businesses are long-tenured community businesses,” Silagyi says of Portside and Lakeview. “Both names deserve to continue on.”
“My wife and I are looking forward to having one focused, family business - something we can carry on for the prior owners and carry on to our own sons,” Silagyi says.
Silagyi hopes this focus on family continues with his own twin sons, who are toddlers. After all, Jarret and Lauren both grew up in family businesses and as boating enthusiasts - Jarret in Pittsburgh and Lauren near Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Gabriella Chambers, a sophomore at Noblesville High School, enjoys the hard work and camaraderie that makes any team successful. She believes such attributes have greatly helped her school’s swim team. “On the swim team, I like all of the people, and how we connect as a team,” Chambers says. “I love how hard we work every day to improve. We push each other to be great, and support everyone equally.” Chambers, an honor student, also works hard in the classroom to achieve her academic goals. “My favorite classes are algebra, chemistry and world history,” she says. “I was in National Junior Honor Society, and I’m looking forward to National Honor Society in eleventh grade - unless the school opens it to freshman and sophomores.”
