GETTING THE JOB DONE SHADY CREEK HARDWARE FINDS SUCCESS THROUGH DISTINCTIVE BUSINESS MODEL

Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

Owner Joe Fry knows Shady Creek Hardware in Wolcottville is not a typical hardware store, and that is fine by him. It’s a small operation, but one that serves his community and his customers, and offers several benefits not often found in other retail stores these days. A typical hardware store sells products

used for home improvement or home repairs.

via phone. Almost all sales are shipped free of charge.

Often these stores have paint, gardening supplies, some appliances, lighting, flooring and other products. Customers can come into these typical stores, shop around, make their purchases and leave. Shady Creek is different in that it specializes in specific product areas, and the staff prefers to engage with customers

Shady Creek started out offering construction supplies and power tools. Fry then added woodworking supplies such as router bits, saw blades, wood glue and other needs - supplies and tools that local wood shops and woodworkers need. Woodworking is simply the craft of making items from wood. It includes

cabinet and furniture making, wood carving, joinery, carpentry and woodturning. Some woodworkers rely on power tools, others prefer hand tools, and others use a combination. “We stock woodworking and construction supplies, and prefer to ship all of our sales,” Fry says. “Our customers just call us after 1 p.m. and tell us what they want, and we ship it.” Cordless, handheld power tools are some of the main retail items at Shady Creek Hardware. Fry handles most major brands such as Makita, Milwaukee and DEWALT. These tools, in particular, have a three-year warranty. Fry opened the store about a year and a half ago. “People in this area needed a hardware store,” Fry says. Wolcottville straddles the county line between Noble and LaGrange counties. Established in 1849, the population is currently about 1,000 people. Much of TownePost.com / AUGUST 2022 / THE LAKES / 7

the area is rural, with a mix of farms and lake cottages for a seasonal population. A former factory worker, Fry was looking for an opportunity to allow him to work from home, as well as a place he could work alongside family. He had no previous experience in running a hardware store, but he has welcomed the opportunities it continues to provide. It was a way to meet his own needs and provide a service to his community. “It is a family operation and we intend to keep it that way,” Fry says. Many of his customers are from Amish communities in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, but all potential customers are welcome. Business is conducted via phone in most cases. Because of the focus on phone orders and the small staff, new customers should call first to find out if the store stocks what they are looking for. He is sure that construction

SERVING OUR SENIORS CARE FOR THE ELDERLY IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND KOSCIUSKO COMMUNITY SENIOR SERVICES

Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

In these present times, perhaps more so than ever before, people are compelled to look out for one another. Yet even in the best of circumstances, when intentions are honorable and compassion is flowing, the voices of those most in need can seem faint and fleeting.

However, the folks who have formed a veritable alliance of benevolence at Kosciusko Community Senior Services (KCSS) are deeply committed to becoming a faithful presence in the lives of senior citizens, helping to form a devoted network of community and care. David Neff currently serves as the executive director for the Warsaw-based facility. He

has only the highest regards and fondest accolades for the staff and volunteers who are invested in the senior residents of the region. The past two years of trying to maintain a sense of normalcy during a global pandemic have presented new and sometimes confounding challenges. But Neff reflects proudly on the fact that although some elements of assistance had to be revamped, the services continued to

flow on and reach those who were most profoundly affected. The KCSS team offers three main points of focus for their clients, one of which is the delivery of meals to area homes. A team of volunteers takes on various routes, bringing hot and cold meal items during weekdays and frozen food selections on the weekends. Neff says they typically distribute approximately 80 meals per day. Those who bring the meals to seniors are not only wellversed on the needs of the residents they visit, but they also make it a priority to visit with the folks for a while, which is helpful in preventing precarious health hazards and other concerns that could arise. Highly Rated by Our Customers!

“The beauty of this program is developing that camaraderie and also the wellness check,” Neff says. “Our volunteers will take some time to chat with them, and once in a while we’re able to assist a senior in distress.” Neff notes that even during the height of COVID-19, the organization never once missed a meal. The volunteers simply adapted by using a stop-and-drop method, waiting and watching for the individuals to collect their food, and making sure they were well and safe.

Another critical amenity that the KCSS facility provides is transportation - a tremendous asset for those who are no longer able to drive. With three buses and three vehicles outfitted for those with medical equipment such as wheelchairs, drivers are available to pick residents up directly at their doorsteps and chauffeur them to appointments that emphasize medical, nutritional and recreational needs. The goodwill of the drivers extends beyond

simply maneuvering the steering wheel, as they will go the distance to carry groceries, open doors, and help to ensure safe movement for patients who have mobility issues. Neff says that safety protocols have been, and remain, enforced with regard to masking and social distancing. He notes that the center recently received grant funds from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, which were used to help install plastic barrier screens between the front and rear seats. Presently, the policies for face coverings have been rendered optional, and the site follows the same protocols as those set forth by the Warsaw Parks and Recreation Department. The one feature of KCSS that was most affected throughout the past two years was the popular activity center. Neff still remembers the exact date when he learned that the much-loved center would be forced to close as COVID-19 cases surged across

the state. It was March 12, 2020, Neff recalls, when Teresa Reed paid a visit from the Health Department, bringing the sad news that the activity center would have to close immediately. Neff is very grateful to Reed for providing much-needed guidance and updates, even coming to talk with the clients and staff, sharing a willingness to inform and answer questions in light of rapidly changing data. “Whenever possible, she stayed there right on-site,” Neff says. “She was crucial and instrumental on deciding when and how to reopen. I confidently told our board of directors that I had the utmost faith in her.” The staff of KCSS was overjoyed to be able to reopen the activity center to clients, welcoming them all with open arms as the nation slowly emerged from a dark spell. “It gives them a chance to mingle again and to spend time with their peers,” Neff says. Many guests come by to play

cards, board games or bingo, or to simply engage in conversation. “Isolation definitely contributes to feelings of depression and despair,” Neff says, noting that their visitors are optimistic and happy to be back in the social circles. Lunches are also served in the activity center once per day, with Thursday being the most popular day. Neff says that particular day is special, as a number of

local businesses pitch in through their sponsorships to provide special meals, which gives the diners a chance to sample local cuisine. Kosciusko Community Senior Services is located at 800 North Park Avenue in Warsaw. They can be reached by calling 574-267-2012, or by visiting their website at kosciuskoseniorservices.org.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are picnics at the lake with family and friends. We enjoyed Italian submarine sandwiches from our local Italian deli, homemade macaroni salad my dad made, and my mom’s famous brownies with rich chocolate frosting. We enjoyed our meal and then took turns sailing around the lake in my family’s sailboat. You don’t need fancy food to have a picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Play to your strengths. You do need a little bit of planning, good food, and friends and family. Here are five tips for enjoying the perfect picnic.

1. MAKE A MENU AND INVITE YOUR GUESTS My parents owned a restaurant and catering company, so I believe it’s important to eat good, high-quality food at your picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Don’t overdo it. Set a budget. I prefer to provide the food for my guests instead of a pitchin/potluck. It makes things easier for everyone and you won’t have duplicate items. Also, guests won’t feel added pressure of what to bring and they can enjoy themselves. Who knows - maybe your guests will reciprocate and invite you to the next picnic or party. Set a budget and think of your signature dishes (what you make best), and work from there. I like to serve either fried chicken or sandwiches at a picnic. I like to buy fried chicken from a local restaurant or grocery, or make good sandwiches (ham and cheese on French bread, or BLTs on French bread). For the sides and dessert,

I like to serve fruit (cut-up pineapple, strawberries and watermelon), homemade pasta salad (with a vinaigrette or salad dressing), lemon bars, brownies and cookies. You can purchase the desserts from your favorite bakery. I like to have plenty of water and canned drinks on hand with slices of lime and lemon. I prefer to keep the number of guests at the picnic to 10 or fewer. It’s a nice number of guests and allows everyone to hear each other talk, and it won’t break your budget. Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack some snacks. Hungry guests will appreciate some snacks at the picnic before you eat the main meal. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget salt and pepper, mayo, mustard and other condiments. I like to use packets so each

guest can take a few packets if they need to. 2. MAKE A LIST OF PICNIC SUPPLIES I don’t want to waste money buying what I already have on hand. Make sure you have enough extra cups, plates, silverware and napkins. Make a list of what you may need to buy, such as disposable tablecloths. Picnic Pro Tip: Try to use plastic plates and cups if possible. Plastic plates are sturdier than paper plates. If you do use paper, this is the time to splurge on thick paper plates and cups. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Keep picnic supplies in one location. I keep plastic cups, plates, silverware, napkins and tablecloths on a separate shelf in the pantry. I’m always ready to plan a picnic. If you don’t have these supplies, it’s an inexpensive

investment for cute, plastic picnic supplies. 3. PLAN WHERE YOU PICNIC Look at your favorite city or local park and reserve a covered table or two. If you’re not able to reserve a table, you can always find empty picnic tables and/or a large area of grass to put down extra tablecloths. If kids will be at your picnic, try to find a park with a playground or spray pad so the kids will have something to do after eating.

YOU DREAM IT. WE BUILD IT. IT’S THAT SIMPLE. Fine Custom Cabinetry for Your Kitchen, Bath or Office

Picnic Pro Tip: Try to find a local park where you can park your vehicle close to the picnic area. This will make it easier to unload and load up picnic supplies. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Look at your local weather forecast and try to plan your picnic on a dry day that’s not too hot. Plan your gathering early in the day or late in the day for optimal weather conditions. 4.PACK AHEAD I like to pack a supply bag (cups, plates, silverware, napkins, paper towels for any messes, wet wipes, garbage bags and tablecloths) in advance. Keep all the drinks and food in the fridge until shortly before leaving to guarantee they will be cold. I pack the food and drinks in two soft cooler bags with ice packs. Pack some bubbles, Frisbees, hula hoops and other toys for the kids. I also like to bring a wireless speaker to play music during the picnic. Picnic Pro Tip: Allow yourself an extra 30 minutes before you leave, and double check your picnic list to make sure you have everything packed and ready to go. Try to keep everything in a few large, soft cooler bags or coolers so you don’t have a lot of

small bags to carry. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Pack a few foldable chairs just in case someone might want to sit in a chair. Pack a couple of spray water bottles with fans. I have a few of these on hand and they are a perfect way to cool off on a hot day. They are usually under $10 at most stores. These are good to have on hand for concerts, sporting events and other outdoor activities.

Let the kids play with bubbles, hula hoops, Frisbees and other toys.

Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Once you get home, relax and congratulate yourself on a fantastic picnic.

5. HAVE FUN Don’t stress about your picnic. This is the time to ask any guests who arrive early to help unpack the car, and carry the bags and coolers to the picnic table and set up. Take a break and pour drinks for guests, and turn on the music while setting up the meal. You spent a lot of time planning and now it’s time to have fun, enjoy the food and spend time with your guests. The extra planning makes for a successful picnic party. Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget the games.

Structural Integrity HERITAGE BACKYARDS BRINGS UNWAVERING QUALITY TO THE SHED BUSINESS Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

People accumulate stuff. That is a fact, and often there is a need to find more places to store stuff that has accumulated over time. If this scenario sounds familiar, buying a quality, locally built storage shed from Heritage Backyards of Plymouth is the solution. The storage sheds built by Heritage Backyards are designed to each customer’s specifications, according to Owner Calvin Schlabach. Having previously worked in the recreational vehicle industry, he started the business in 2017. He became acquainted with someone else offering similar buildings, and that person served as a mentor and helped get the business started locally.

“The highest percentage of our customers simply need more storage space,” Schlabach says. “Some people use our sheds for a garage, a she-shed, or an out-of-the-house office space.”

be insulated and paneled. The exterior design is also open to the customer’s design tastes. The customer chooses the roof type, building dimensions and personalized features.

The Heritage Backyards website also suggests other uses for storage sheds. These buildings can be used as art or craft studios, hangouts for pets, children’s playhouses or even chicken coops.

Customers also have the choice of more than 25 paint colors and two colors of stain for the shed siding, as well as 12 colors of vinyl siding and five colors of metal siding. Shingles for the roof come in eight different colors, and there are 12 color choices for a metal roof.

There are many additional possible uses for sheds like these, Schlabach says. The potential is only limited by the customer’s imagination and needs. Every storage shed can be customized if needed. For example, a shed intended for anything other than storage may need to THE LAKES MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com

ability to match the paint color of the shed to other buildings on the site. Matching the paint color of the new shed to the existing exterior paint on other buildings is a frequent request, Schlabach says. Heritage Backyards uses SherwinWilliams paints and can color-match to most finishes. A new, designer metal siding style has been added to the many options customers have. This style mimics wood but is manufactured out of steel, making it maintenance-free. It has four stock colors and comes with sevenlayer protection. Other choices that make each shed unique to each customer involve the type of windows, overhead door, and door design. Upgraded features include an interior wall on the cottage design option, interior and exterior lights, a porch and railing, a work bench, shelves, a workplace heater, or air

conditioning. People can be creative with their choices, adding various upgrades to the building including a loft. Each shed, however, comes with the assurance that top-of-the-line materials are offered, such as seamless, triple-layered rubber flooring, a radiant heat barrier to keep the interior of the shed cool, and the use of spruce framing lumber instead of pine in the construction. Heritage Backyard provides enhanced construction practices for each shed it constructs. For example, the floor joists used in their buildings are double the industry standard, resulting in the company claim that these floors are the stiffest in the industry. Wall studs, floor joists and roof rafters are set at every 16” instead of the typical 24” with the addition of hurricane ties securing the walls and roof together. Close attention to the details means adding a Heritage Backyard storage shed can enhance a property, according to Schlabach.

He says Heritage Backyards is not a company to cut corners. “The quality of the materials used, and how it is put together, is what we focus on,” he says. “We like to build a building that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and is sturdy construction.” Each shed is built at the company’s Ligonier location, which ensures that each build meets the quality standards in place. It also means the wait time between the custom order and finished shed is minimal, and that any customizations can be efficiently implemented. Storage sheds can be custom built at Heritage Backyards or on-site. Currently, there is a four-week wait on custom orders. Customers can also visit the retail location and purchase a shed already completed from the lot.

Schlabach says services offered with each shed include free delivery and site setup. When a shed is delivered, the site is prepared using a multistep process. This includes leveling the site, adding a gravel or concrete pad, and even trimming the landscaping to fit the shed into the desired location. Heritage Backyards serves customers within a 50-mile radius of Plymouth. Customers typically do some preparation for the shed’s arrival, Schlabach says. This includes making sure there is a place to unload the shed and clearing a path to get it to the desired location. Any permits to comply with codes and regulations should be in place. Those who are looking for a storage shed and want to find out more can call and request a quote, or stop by the retail lot at 12131 U.S. Highway 6 in Plymouth. A quote can also be requested online. magine the somewhat unlikely odds of crossing paths with someone who can say that they’ve traveled halfway around the world to pursue a dream.

There is such a person ensconced in the midst of Elkhart County - a business owner who spent years perfecting his trade. Adeeb Kupty, an entrepreneur and owner of an established business based in Goshen, has come a very long way to create the gilded reputation that has established the foundation of Pro Paint & Finish. Pro Paint & Finish has been a mainstay of local commerce for more than 20 years, specializing in a broad range of painting and drywall contracting. The employees are prepared to handle projects ranging from a modest home painting job all the way up to large-scale construction work. They are fully equipped to work in new or existing construction, from residential to commercial.

While sitting down for a chat with Kupty, it becomes very evident that his expertise is not only highly reputable, but also very much in demand. His cell phone is just within reach, and consistently hums and pings with activity. Even while he’s home, grabbing a quick meal at his kitchen table, he is never quite off the clock. This fact makes the rise of Pro Paint & Finish all the more fascinating. Kupty arrived in America back in 1998, with a goal of continuing higher education immersed in biblical studies. However, he was aware of the practicality of finding employment. Emboldened by a sense of responsibility, Kupty sought to raise his profile in the community by making connections, scoping out potential job opportunities and building his resume. “I was a company of one,” Kupty says of his early days starting the business. “My first paint sprayer was a rental, and I was using my personal vehicle to take on side jobs.” As

his singular workforce became stronger, his confidence propelled him into visiting more sites and stores. Slowly, Kupty was tasked with larger projects, such as multifamily housing. He began to appreciate that this vision was transforming itself into a means to support his family, and he was willing to go the distance. Kupty decided to enroll in a series of business courses to continue building on his proficiency in painting. “I began painting as a way to support my family,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help us financially, and to build a life for ourselves.” Word of Kupty’s talents and work ethic took hold quickly, and a full-fledged business venture was born. In addition to providing a full spectrum of painting and drywalling options, Pro Paint & Finish has added other services along the way including power washing, home remodel accents, exterior house painting, wallpaper removal and application, color consultation, intumescent

Proper use of these items can take your cooking up into the stratosphere. Plus, most herbs and spices are nutritional powerhouses. Take black pepper, Most of you probably use it daily. Did you know that it has been deemed the king of spices? It has been used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years due to its high concentration of potent, beneficial plant compounds. To get the most out of pepper, you should buy whole peppercorns and grind it fresh as needed. Here at New Kitchen Store, we carry a variety of fresh peppercorns that you probably won’t find in your local grocery store.

Peppercorns are high in antioxidants. Black pepper is rich in a potent antioxidant called piperine that may help prevent free-radical damage to your cells. Piperine may also effectively fight inflammation in your body. Chronic inflammation is an underlying factor in many conditions including

arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Black pepper may also improve blood-sugar control, lower cholesterol levels, contain cancer-fighting properties, promote gut health and help reduce appetite. It may also help you increase absorption of essential

GOLD STANDARD IT’S A LABOR OF LOVE FOR OWNER OF ARTISTRY IN GOLD & LADIES APPAREL

Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Christine Allen-Hackworth, owner of Artistry in Gold & Ladies Apparel in North Webster, says she’s never minded going to work because she loves what she does. “I’m very fortunate because I’m able to enjoy what I do,” Allen-Hackworth says. “I come in to my shop and I’m ready to help

people. I love my customers and it’s fun to make their day better. I get a big kick out of what I do. It’s a great feeling to be able to feel like you can put a smile on someone else’s face too. People are happy when they come in here. They can see that I enjoy what I’m doing.” She has adopted that work philosophy for a long time.

“Before I started this business I worked at Chapman Jewelers in Warsaw, Indiana, and Duckweed’s Ladies Apparel in North Webster,” she says. “I was able to learn a lot about how to work with customers and what they are specifically looking for. I also was able to learn a lot about jewelry. I enjoyed getting to know what tastes my customers have, and what kind of jewelry and clothes they like.” Allen-Hackworth took everything she learned through the years and decided to strike out on her own. In 1997 she opened Artistry in Gold & Ladies Apparel. “I’m looking forward to having some kind of anniversary celebration to share with my

customers,” she says. “I think it will be a lot of fun. I’ve had a lot of great times here and I know my customers have too. Our main business is a jewelry store, but we also offer a lot of other great women’s apparel and other items.”

Allen-Hackworth says her business is a fullservice jewelry store. “We have diamonds, and precious and semiprecious gems,” she says. “We also have a selection of gold and silver jewelry that a lot of our customers really like. We can help

Allen-Hackworth believes she has had a lot of repeat business because customers have been extremely satisfied. “I have a lot of come-back customers, and that’s what you want when you are running a business,” she says. “I love seeing the smiles on my customers’ faces. I have really been able to get to know quite a few of them over the years, and I know just what they like and what they are looking for when they come in. I also like seeing a lot of new faces that come through my door, and getting to know them and what they like.” Allen-Hackworth was happy with the jewelry side of the business so she decided to offer a boutique with upscale ladies apparel. “A lot of the items we have are unique and special,” she says. “We offer a lot of pieces that are hard to find in other stores and places. STEADY GROWTH HORN OF PLENTY IS A TRUE COMMUNITY UNDERTAKING Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photography Provided

One of the very first things that commands notice in rural areas of north-central Indiana is the abundance of lush farmland. Almost as far as the eyes can see, acres of soil serve as the fertile grounds through which an abundance of crops are grown. It is an example of nature at its finest, a creation born of necessity. To see these practices and principles being faithfully executed, so to speak, consider a visit to Horn of Plenty in rural Middlebury.

they’re getting the finest product available while supporting local, small businesses. The Horn of Plenty idea was conceived more than a decade ago when a group of farmers convened to discuss ways that they could exercise some control over how and where their crops would go, in a manner

Retail Store Now Open Wednesday and Saturday 9 AM- 4 PM

Located among a quaint and quiet farmstead owned by Noah and Rebecca Miller, it is a business venture that encompasses far more than a simple warehouse storefront. It is a true community endeavor. Horn of Plenty is a name that represents an ever-blossoming agricultural cooperative - one that is fueled entirely by the efforts of local farmers. The co-op membership consists of more than 50 farming families, all of whom contribute homegrown meats, eggs and produce for retail sale. By weaving together this communal enterprise, the partnerships are most beneficial to everyone involved. It is a means of income for the growers and their families, and the consumers come away with the reassurance that

that would be most advantageous to both the sellers and the buyers. “The main drive was to let the farmers decide,” recalls David Yoder, who currently oversees the sales aspect of Horn of Plenty. Among the families who contribute to the collaborative cycle, there are those who supply food on a full-time basis, while others flow with the seasons. In order to join, there is a series of guidelines that must be stringently followed, including a commitment to chemical-free production. There are no enhancements, no GMOs and no shortcuts, and only organic methods for disease suppression and pest control are used. The items must also be meticulously cleaned and packaged according to the bylaws. Presently, Horn of Plenty sells beef, chicken, pork, turkey, duck, lamb and fresh brown eggs. Produce varies with the calendar, but typically includes tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, berries, melons and sweet corn, to name a few. Peak strawberry season has passed, the men advise, but just around the bend there will be sweet corn, melons and blueberries some of the best flavors of summer. Because of this natural approach to raising food, Horn of Plenty is actually a year-round operation in which everyone is mindful of even the smallest details, such as planning the planting,

soil conditions and weather. As is generally the case with Midwestern climate conditions, things can and do change rapidly. Miller and Yoder both share insights on what a typical year can look like when preparing for a growing season. The farmers involved in the co-op design their crops through planting specifications, followed later by the delivery of their items to the main Middlebury site. There is a commission percentage off the overhead costs, and new members experience this after they receive their first payout. The items are marketed for various outlets including wholesale and retail. The loyalty to their customers is also evident in that they are able to keep folks apprised on what types of produce are available, what their peak seasons are and what awaits on the horizon. Occasionally some of the crops are sold at nearby auctions. At all times, in all ways, “we only sell what we grow,” Yoder says. After 12 years, Horn of Plenty has solidified itself as a rural institution with a professional pedigree. Yet there is more to accomplish in the future according to Miller. “The growth curve has been so steep and we’ve been so busy trying to keep up with the growth,” he says. Because of the success they have achieved thus far, the investors were able to finance the construction of a main warehouse in Middlebury back in 2019. Miller hopes to

CURTAIN UP CREATIVITY REIGNS AT ART HOUSE IN GOSHEN

Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Adrienne Nesbitt with Goshen-based Art House says the theater program has been around for a quarter of a century. “Art House originally began as New World Players around 25 years ago,” Nesbitt says.

“The focus was mostly on live theater. About new location we’ll be producing theater, eight years ago we added an indie film house music, comedy, spoken-word and art events, to keep expanding our offerings.” as well as screening films.” The film house was met with an enthusiastic response from the community. “As of February 2022 we moved to a new location at the Goshen Theater, at 216 South Main Street,” Nesbitt says. “At this

Art House has given the community many valuable entertainment options. Patrons have thoroughly enjoyed the film projects. Art House’s cinema hosts independent film titles that fall under several different genres according to Nesbitt. She says filmgoers of all ages have enjoyed the films,

and encourage their families and friends to attend screenings. Jenny Ransom of Indianapolis says she enjoys independent films because they give her a different viewing experience than many big-budget films.

“I’ve been really touched and moved by some of the high-quality films they have had at Goshen Art House,” Ransom says. “I get tired of a lot of the comic book, action blockbusters at the concrete bunker movie theaters, and this gives me something different to enjoy.”

Nesbitt says Art House also supports local filmmakers. “We have done some projects in-house, but mostly we exist to support local filmmakers by providing a venue to screen in,” Nesbitt says. “We are also partners in the River Bend Film Festival, the region’s premier independent film festival.” The Art House theater program is also popular. “We have produced everything from avantgarde and quirky theater to some beloved classics,” Nesbitt says. “Yearly, we produce a 24/7 play festival, which involves the writing, directing and performance of seven short plays in 24 hours.” Comedy fans can find something to laugh about at the facility. “We focus on highlighting local talent,” Nesbitt says. “On July 9 we will be hosting a

It’s that time of year again. School is starting and families are slowing getting back to new routines. There is a lot to do in a short period of time and it can be stressful. Believe me, it doesn’t have to be. Here are seven tips to help parents get ready for a new school year. You can do it! We’ve got this!

Who doesn’t love a closet purge? Yes, it can take some time, but it can be refreshing to get rid of things and organize. I always feel better with less stuff around the house. Schedule a day at least a few weeks before school starts to go through your kids’ closets. Take everything out of closets, dressers and storage so you can see what there is to sort through. Ask your kids to help by taking time to try on clothes, shoes and other accessories. Decide what to keep, repair, and give away to friends and family or donate. When you’re finished, organize clothes, shoes and accessories you plan to keep for each kid. Enlist your kids’ help to reorganize their closets. Reward your kids with a movie night or other special treat for their help in this process.

I’ve always loved to shop for school supplies. I admit I tend to buy way too much or repurchase what I already have on hand. In order to save time and money, gather and organize school supplies. Check to see if your kids have any unused supplies from last year that can be used this school year. See what needs to be kept, tossed or donated. Ask your kids to help you.

MAKE A MASTER LIST AND GO SHOPPING Keep a list of what you need to buy for each kid. I have a friend who separates the list by kid and what each kid needs.

Plan to set a certain amount to spend per kid. My friend also lets her kids buy something on their wish list (a pair of shoes or an item of clothing) at their favorite store. This is an extra-special reward for help with organizing closets.

It’s also a good time to make haircut appointments. A new haircut, even it’s a trim, is a fun experience and a way to boost a kid’s self-confidence.

COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR KIDS ABOUT THE NEW SCHEDULE

You can also save time and money by purchasing what you can online. When you go shopping at a store, try to go in the morning or early evening, when the stores are less crowded.

Hold a family meeting and go over the kids’ new schedules for transportation such as bus and school pickup and drop-off, and carpools. Talk with your kids about your expectations for what you would like them to do to get ready for school each day. Think about what each kid is able to do and what is ageappropriate. You might ask your kids to prepare their own lunches and snacks, and lay out clothes and backpacks, the night before. Discuss what will work best for each kid and your family.

SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS Set aside time to schedule dentist and doctor appointments. It is important to make sure physicals and immunizations are updated for each kid. If your kids are playing sports this school year, make sure to bring sports physical forms to the doctor appointment so they can be completed at the office.

A friend of mine uses a family chore chart and reward system displayed in the kitchen with assigned tasks so each kid knows what is expected. This system may not work for everyone, and that’s OK. You will find what works best through trial and error.

If your kids have phones, set up a group text so the family can easily communicate and is aware of changing schedules. Make sure all family numbers and emergency numbers are set up in each kid’s phone. A family I know also recommends sharing a family calendar on Google or another application.

CELEBRATE THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR A new school year is a reason for celebration. Have a dinner at home or at a restaurant to celebrate with the entire family. Congratulate your kids on their hard work getting ready for school and

thank them for all of their help. Discuss what everyone in the family is looking forward to, and try to ease any nerves your kids might have about a new school year. It is a time to be positive and help to encourage your kids for a successful school year. Think positive.

DON’T STRESS I tend to overthink and worry about what I did not get completed. I try and remind myself that not everything will get done, and that’s OK. No one is perfect. Focus on what absolutely has to be done before school starts. If you do need some help, don’t be afraid to ask friends or family members to pitch in when they can.

YELLOWSTONE TRAIL FEST HAMLET FESTIVAL PLANNED FOR AUGUST Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

the volunteer Yellowstone Trail Fest board of directors.

What happens when you take history, and add small-town atmosphere and community pride? You get the Yellowstone Trail Fest in Hamlet.

“It brings the community together and offers a fun way to educate the younger generation on the history of the trail,” says board member Juanita Ketcham, acting as spokesperson for the festival board.

Hamlet has the historic distinction of being the only town in Starke County through which the historic Yellowstone Trail directly led. The population of Hamlet is estimated at about 800 people, but every summer that population expands thanks to the efforts of

The Yellowstone Trail was constructed in 1912 as one of the first transcontinental roadways in the United States. The destination of the road was the newly organized Yellowstone National Park. The

impetus for the trail was the desire by South Dakota businessmen to bring people to the park from the east, especially through Ipswich, South Dakota. Planning that direct route brought it through northern Indiana and right through the center of Hamlet. It

remained a direct route until the 1930s. According to the festival’s history as provided by the board, the current festival is the second festival to celebrate the town’s heritage and community. The first one

the festival in 2008. A committee was formed and organized as a nonprofit in 2015. Partnering with the annual Hamlet Rendezvous organized by Hester’s Farm, a living history event that has been ongoing for 35 years, the Yellowstone Trail Fest continues to bring in locals and out-oftown visitors for some hometown fun. The rendezvous area was one of the designated campsites along the original Yellowstone Trail, according to the Indiana Bicentennial Commission website. The original version of the Yellowstone Trail Fest “was mostly an opportunity for the rendezvous to gather and vendors to sell items,” Ketcham says. “It only took up about a tenth of the size of the current layout.” Today visitors to the festival can enjoy a parade, a huge car show organized by Dave Pearson, a repurposed metal sculpture contest, and a skillet toss, in addition to music and vendors. The Oregon-Davis girls golf team organizes an escape-room

experience each year too. It wouldn’t be the same without the fireworks display sponsored by Larry Jernas, the Town of Hamlet and business supporters, Ketcham adds. This year’s theme is “Back to the Future,” with the festival incorporating as much as possible from the movie. Thanks to the support of the business community, Ketcham says all events are free. “We will have a DeLorean there, hopefully with the flux time machine,” Ketcham says. “A huge clock will be put up on a peak, and skits using a combination of a scene from one of the movies and some history of the trail thrown in there are planned.” Plans continue to develop ahead of the August 20 and 21 event dates. The festival will be held at the fairgrounds, located about two blocks off of the historic trail. New additions this year are TV game shows, Whip Guy demonstrations and laser tag, which will replace the inflatables. Cooling stations will also be added to the grounds this year. The festival is more than just a fun summertime community activity. It is also used as a fundraiser for local organizations

such as Bikes for Kids, the Oregon-Davis FFA group, and local small businesses that exhibit and sell their wares that weekend. Ketcham explains what to expect for first-time attendees. “The size is perfect,” she says. “It is very family oriented with lots of personal touches and real bathrooms,” she says. Follow the bright yellow Yellowstone Trail Fest signs to find the way to the fairgrounds. The Hamlet organization offers trail marker signs for the Indiana counties through which the trail originally crossed, with the hopes that the signs can help travelers find their way along that original route. A map is available at yellowstonetrail.org.

Quality Construction at an Affordable Price

Volunteers are always appreciated during the festival and throughout the year. Festival T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies are also offered this year to make up for some loss of funding from the cancellation of annual fundraising activities due to COVID. Ketcham says an order form is available on the festival’s Facebook page or at Back to Basics Organics in the Knox mall.
