FOR WOODTECH OWNER NORMAN TROYER, CRAFTSMANSHIP IS KEY
Norman Troyer, owner of WOODtech, has been doing woodworking since a young age, and has successfully earned a loyal customer base.
He meets with customers at his shop and finds out exactly what they want. Troyer’s attention to detail with woodworking has resulted in unique and high-quality items. “I’ve been doing woodworking my whole
life and I love it,” Troyer says. “It’s work that I enjoy, and I like taking on new jobs and taking the time to make an order just right for the customer.”
Troyer decided to go into woodworking full time a few years ago.
“I was working full time for my dad at Indian Trail Furniture,” Troyer says. “At the time I was also continuing to work on wood projects as a hobby. I’ve always been making furniture on the side. In
2020 I started woodworking a lot more. I thought it was time to start a business. My wife, Loretta, and I have six children, and I always wanted to give them the chance to have what I had when I started out in life. By 2022 I was woodworking full time.”
Troyer’s unique hatchback desks have been popular.
“When I started working on the hatchback desks, I didn’t want them to

Troyer uses cylinders to make the desks unique.
“I put a cylinder on the lip of the desks,” Troyer says. “I also put cylinders on the wood and played around with the design. I eventually got a better pair of cylinders and came up with a design that really looked nice.”
Customers told Troyer they were impressed with what they saw.
“I love working on the hatchback desks,” Troyer says. “I’ve been able to make them bigger and put in some different parts. I have put some magnet whiteboards on the wood and cubbyholes. For example, I put small cubbyhole drawers in the bottom right drawer of a desk, and a dry eraser in

Troyer likes to offer his customers a wide selection of items to choose from.
“The main focus of WOODtech is variety,” Troyer says. “I want people to look at what I have and tell other people about it.”
Troyer puts a lot of attention into the details of everything he does.
“I make great sewing cabinets, wine racks and some nice bookshelves,” he says.
“I also make his-and-hers light combo stands. Those have been a pleasure to make and I enjoy the time I spend working on them.”
Troyer takes time to find out exactly what his customers want.

see me,” Troyer says. “I want them to tell me their ideas. Custom furniture is a big part of my business. A lot of times people will come in and will have a picture of a specific design they like for a piece of furniture, and say they want something like what is in the picture. They come by and we sit and talk. They want something new that is also different. I take what they ask for and create something similar, but also original and unique.”
Troyer wants all his customers to be happy with his work.
“I have been very fortunate to have repeat customers who have been satisfied with what they ordered,” he says. “I know they are happy with what they got. They tell their family members and friends about the desk or bookshelf or something else I made, and I get more business. That’s a great feeling.”
When Troyer isn’t working, he loves to
spend time with his family.
“Loretta and I have been blessed with six children,” Troyer says. “We have two girls and four boys. Our oldest child is 9 years old. The children really enjoy working and playing in the shop.”
Troyer loves living in Howe and enjoys the quiet atmosphere.
“It’s also close to our families,” Troyer says. “It’s a great place to live and work.” To find out more about WOODtech, visit them at 3810 North 250 West in Howe, or call 260-562-9131.

Lavender is a popular summertime bloom with a reputation as a medicinal plant. A visit to Aroma Acres lavender and wildflower farm in New Paris is both therapeutic and energizing. It is

also a wonderful place to simply enjoy the scents, the views, and the friendly welcome from Owners Rich and Nancy Borkholder, and their daughter, Caryn Webster.
In July, the peak season for lavender, rows
and rows of purple-hued plants cover the fields at the Borkholders’ home. Other rows feature wildflowers, sunflowers and other floral blooms. Wildflowers bloom from July to October.

on-site too, in the greenhouse and fields. It’s a seasonal business, from spring and summer flowers to chrysanthemums and pumpkins in the fall. Throughout the year the community is invited to come out for artisan markets or workshops, like the lavender wreath making event held in July.
A longtime farming family who raised calves, the Borkholders switched to growing lavender about six years ago. It wasn’t easy at first. The polar vortex a couple of years ago wiped out hundreds of plants, leaving only 17 to survive.
“We both like gardening and felt this was a better use of the land,” Nancy says.
Lavender is a perennial plant that grows from one to three feet. It is considered an herb. Its blooms are small and blueishpurple in color, and grow on spike-like stems. The oils in the flowers add a distinctive, balsam-like fragrance to essential oils or recipes.

“I like the medicinal aspect of the [lavender] plants,” Webster says. Lavender is supposed to have a calming effect. It is antifungal, an antibiotic, and may help those with difficulty sleeping, Webster says. “It can be infused into oils and can reduce inflammation in the body,” she adds.
Webster also has perfected a special blend of lavender and ingredients that she serves in lavender lemonade and lavender hot chocolate. Lavender can be used in food recipes too.
Microgreens represent one of the more popular produce options raised by the Borkholders. Microgreens are considered nutritious and are available year-round.
“One serving of broccoli microgreens yields all of the vitamins you get from eating one whole head of broccoli,” Rich says.
They opened their you-pick operation to the public about three years ago. Visitors pay 50 cents per stem to harvest from the flower beds, or they can purchase previously picked flowers packaged in a bundle. Recently the Borkholders welcomed a wedding party who picked their own bouquets for the ceremony in the fields. They also hosted a group of 80 children from the Boys & Girls Club, scout troops and church groups.
The farm is also available for photo shoots.

summer and fall feature local booths selling a variety of handcrafted wares. This fall, about 40 to 50 vendors will set up shop at Aroma Acres for the fall artisan market, set for September 23 and 24.
In the marketplace barn, a variety of lavender products and farm produce is sold. Selections vary by the growing season. For example, in the fall, the pack-a-pumpkin event is a popular sale, in which shoppers fill a hollowed out pumpkin with wildflowers for $10. The pumpkin can then be used as a fall decoration.
The Borkholders encourage the picking of wildflowers. It is an important part of taking care of the crop, Rich says. “The more you cut them, they more flowers the plants produce,” he says.
There are many reasons for people to visit Aroma Acres. Guests include
lavender lovers and people who simply want to step away from busy lives.
“Some people don’t have the space to grow lavender or flowers,” Nancy says. “Some people just want to come here and sit.”
“I have to say that I did not know how
calming and peaceful it can be here,” Webster says.
Aroma Acres is located at 69590 County Road 21 in New Paris. For more information, visit aromaacresfarm.com or follow them on Facebook. Send email inquiries to aromaacresllc@gmail.com.

Eric Chupp, owner of Hardwood Hideout Taxidermy in Syracuse, says he has decided to take his talent for taxidermy and turn it into a full-time business.
“I have decided it was time to take something I know a lot about and am good at, and turn it into a business,” Chupp says. “I am officially full time this September. I’m very excited about it and I have a lot of people that will be good customers, so I’m ready to go. I thought the time was right. It just feels like it’s time to make this a full-time business.”
Chupp says he is glad he made the decision. “I have been working on different taxidermy projects for family and friends for quite a while,” he says. “I first learned how to stuff animals I had in 2008. I got into it more in 2011 and started doing taxidermy for other people. Taxidermy really is an art. Preserving an animal’s body to mount it to look good takes time and patience.”
Chupp says he learned how to specialize his taxidermy to include different animals.
“I can do head and shoulder mounts on white tail and elk, among other animals,” he says.
Chupp also offers other taxidermy to customers. “I eventually got into taxidermy for mammals including coyotes, foxes and others,” he says. “I’m

very lucky to be able to do something I enjoy. In 2020 I also started stuffing fish. I have gotten very good at that as well.”
Chupp appreciates the kind words of support and encouragement he gets from his loyal customers.
“It’s because of them that I have decided to go forward with this full time,” he says. “A lot of different people have really encouraged me to do this full time, because they have animals they want me to work on. It feels great that there are so many people who have encouraged me.”
Chupp has a solid reputation as a highquality taxidermist.
“I was able to get first place at the Association of Indiana Taxidermists (AIT),” Chupp says. “I was very proud of that. After that I just fast-forwarded everything, and kept moving forward and getting better at what I do.”

Chupp is looking forward to having more time to work on his taxidermy.
“I can have a quicker turnaround with customers,” he says of going full time. “I have another job at Helmouth Quality Coatings where I’m the general manager. It’s a great place but I’m ready to move on, to get Hardwood Hideout Taxidermy going full time. I have a backlog of work from last year I can really get to.”
Chupp notes that his children also have a flair for taxidermy.
“My son, Jamie, won first place in taxidermy in an Association of Indiana Taxidermists contest for his work on a white-tail game head,” he says. “My daughter, JoLinda, won first place in the children’s division with her taxidermy work with a mammal.”
Chupp enjoys living in Syracuse.

Chupp says he tells customers he will meet with them by appointment to take care of any taxidermy needs they have.

TRIPLE B EQUINE CONTINUES TO GROW AND THRIVE IN ELKHART COUNTY
Nestled at a crossroads within bucolic eastern Elkhart County there lies a tiny neighborhood of farms and families. The sounds of machinery and hard work rumble along and around the countryside,
interspersed with the laughter of children, kicking up little clouds of dust as they run beneath a canopy of summer sunshine. On one farmstead, there is a distinguished stallion who has proven himself to be
something of a king to the rural castle, though he is certainly unaware of his legendary status. His name is Big Bad Bently, and he is one of the many reasons that Triple B Equine has been able to

grow and thrive over the past few years. Triple B Equine is the family enterprise of Bryan and LuAnn Miller of rural Goshen. The heart of the business focuses on what Bryan Miller calls stallion management, including reproduction endeavors.
Triple B Equine was founded in 2020 and launched in Miller’s hometown of Shipshewana. The family relocated to their current homestead in January.
While navigating the intrigues and challenges of a rapidly rising business, the Millers stay busy raising their five children, Nevaeh, age nine; Blake, eight; Bryson, five; Brent, three; and Ariana, one.
Over the past three years, the business has “grown by leaps and bounds,” Miller says. His childhood fondness for horses manifested itself in a lifelong career and calling.
“I’ve always liked horses, as far back as I

Prior to that leap of faith into fulfilling
that hope of being home full-time, Miller had been working a factory job.

ENGAGING EDUCATION
ROBOTICS GROWS IN POPULARITY THROUGH E3 ROBOTICS CENTER
Located in northern Elkhart, you will find one of the most unique businesses in the area. E3 Robotics Center (E3RC) is a K-12 STEM program focused on exploration, education, and engagement. Their goal is to use a program called FIRST Robotics to teach children and young adults the value of robotics.
E3RC moved into their current building in the summer of 2019 and partnered with one of their corporate sponsors, Thermodyne1. As you enter the facility, you immediately get the feeling that this is a one-of-a-kind business. You will find tables covered in a variety of robots that students have built from scratch, all of which operate for a certain purpose. For example, students will have courses set up where they use blocks, cones, and different objects to maneuver the robot around a course. They use programs that they have developed themselves to control the robot to pick up items and drop them in a specific location, similar to other sports.
For those unfamiliar with FIRST Robotics, it can be described as the ultimate game for the mind. By following strict rules and time limits, high school students are challenged to build industrial-size robots to compete in different games against other teams. Besides learning how to physically build robots, the teams are taught a variety of life skills. This includes fundraising to meet their goals, learning how to create a team brand, and spreading the word about STEM education in the community.
There are many reasons to join the E3RC program. The name comes directly from the values they focus heavily on: exploration, education and engagement. Brian Boehler, Executive Director of E3RC, puts emphasis on creating a fun environment where people want to come learn the sport, as well as teaching them lifelong skills about business, teamwork, and how to use science as a creative outlet.
As the popularity of robotics has grown over the years, so

has the desire for people to be part of the E3RC family. Students come from all over the community to form teams.
Some of the school systems that students come from include Middlebury, Concord, Baugo, WaNee, Mishawaka, South Bend, Goshen, Elkhart, and even students who are homeschooled. Boeher explains how he encourages the STEM system to be used in the classroom using robotics. He works directly with teachers, staff, and students to teach them about STEM and robotics and help them develop their skills.
Some of the accomplishments of E3RC include qualifying and winning multiple robotics competitions at the local and state level. This is evident in the quantity of trophies and medals that line the walls of their facility. Like other sports, robotics teams have a competition season that they train for. Beyond just robotics, E3RC offers other creative outlets for students. Some of these include Lego building projects and competitive gaming. As you head to the back of the building, you will find a state-of-the-art gaming room full of computers and top of the line computers and monitors.
The team at E3RC invites anyone in the community to come take a look around the facility and see all they have to offer. Although they focus primarily on students, they are more than happy to educate individuals of all ages on STEM and robotics.

MUD LAKE SOAP SHOP SELLS HANDCRAFTED AND NATURAL PRODUCTS
Mary Beth Gast, owner of Mud Lake Soap Shop, says she creates her own recipes for her soaps, which has resulted in loyal customers looking for something unique.
“Mud Lake Soaps is a quaint little soap shop,” Gast says. “The shop offers luxurious, handcrafted soaps and many other natural products.”
Gast says the way the soaps are made makes the shop stand out.
“The shop uses the old-fashioned way of making soap, infusing botanicals in oils and using the cold-process method,” Gast says.
There are many positives to this method according to Gast. “One of the main benefits of cold-process soap making is

having complete control over the ingredients,” Gast says.
“Cold-process soap has no added detergents, which strip the skin of its natural oils. Natural and organic ingredients can be added when using the cold-process method to increase the skin-loving benefits.”
Gast adds that it is a long process. “The soaps are hand-cut and cured for four to six weeks before being sold,” Gast says.
“The shop’s focus is simple - stay environmentally aware using natural, organic and sustainable ingredients as much as possible.”
Gast’s business began as something she enjoyed doing anyway.
“I started making soap in 2018 as a hobby,” she says. “A friend asked to put my soaps in a boutique where she was working, and from there, my business took off. I now supply 12 different stores and boutiques in three different states, and I have a website and an Etsy store.”
Gast has a wide variety of products.
“Handcrafted soaps are my main focus,” she says. “I offer about 28 different soaps at this time. I also offer a natural laundry soap,

shampoo bars and hair conditioners, natural deodorants, body butters, lip balm, and body oils. I also offer a candle line using only a natural, kosher soy candle and botanicals.”
Gast also works with other businesses to promote her shop.
“I have partnered with a small shop in Nairobi, Kenya, that hand crafts all of my wood bowls for my wood-bowl candles,” Gast says. “The shop profits help to support the elderly women of their village. All of my products are hand made by me. Nothing coming out of my shop is a commercial product.”
Gast says the ingredients in the soaps have helped grow the business.
“My ingredients are what I build my mission around,” she says. “I focus to use only organic, natural and sustainable ingredients. Some of my ingredients I grow on my own property like my herbs and botanicals. I also purchase locally from friends, like my goat milk and honey that I use. My ingredients are key. I have over 60 recipes, and encourage my customers to read their labels of the products, as it will share all the wonderful elements blended to make that product.”
Gast has earned a strong following. “My business has grown,” Gast

My customer requests for more products have added to my shop.”
Customers have their personal favorites.
“Goat milk soaps are always a favorite,” Gast says. “Honey and aloe vera soaps are also popular for the benefits.”
Gast says she loves running the business. “I love that I created all my own recipes,” she says. “I hand-make all the products myself and I enjoy having my shop in my home on Mud Lake.”
Gast says there are different ways to get her soaps.
“Customers can go to my Etsy store at Mud Lake Soap Shop, and my website at mudlakesoap.com,” she says.
She says local customers can also stop in at The Bird’s Nest in Akron, Doud’s Orchard in Roann, Our Hometown Station in Silver Lake, Cottage Creations in North Manchester, Brooch Boutique locations in Rochester, Warsaw and Wabash, 50 East Garden Center & Café in Wabash, and Saving Grace Vintage in Roanoke. Gast can also make her soaps available as gifts at special events.
“I often custom order for special events, showers, weddings, open houses, realtor events, etcetera,” Gast says. “I always encourage my customers to ask or share ideas.”
Gast loves living in Akron.
“I grew up in Akron so I love bringing a business to my community and the surrounding areas,” she says. “I appreciate all the love and support I have received here.”
Gast is always looking for new customers.
“I encourage people to browse our site, find your favorite and discover the benefits of handcrafted soaps,” she says. “Mud Lake Soap Shop offers products made with all the benefits nature intended.”

JOHNNY APPLESEED
AN AUTUMN REMEMBRANCE OF AN AMERICAN LEGEND WITH HOOSIER TIES
Writer / Jeff Kenney Photography Provided
September in Lakes Magazine country brings with it the impending promise of autumn: the glories of fall colors, migrating geese on the wing, football season underway, cool tdays and nights, and, of course, apples and many things apple related. One applerelated figure, one of mythic proportions in American folklore, readers may be surprised to learn has significant regional connections.
Johnny Appleseed occupies a place in the American lexicon similar to figures like Paul Bunyan or Rip Van Winkle, but Appleseed - born John Chapman in September 1774 in Massachusetts - was a very real person who lived his latter years, died, and was buried in nearby Fort Wayne. Further, his well-marked grave, residing in an honored spot in that city today, was “rediscovered” by a man with local Lakes-area connections. More on that later.
John Chapman’s legendary apple planting was also a matter of fact, not fiction, though there are some inaccuracies in the details of some stories told of his activities.
During the years of the infancy of the U.S.
as a country, 18-year-old Chapman shared the itch many in the east had to go west, taking along with him his 11-year-old half brother, Nathanial Cooley Chapman. Many accounts say the two wandered far and wide before their father (also Nathanial Chapman) purchased a farm in Ohio in 1805, where Nathanial Jr. opted to stay.
Details of just when and where John Chapman’s “Appleseed” exploits began are sketchy, with some accounts suggesting he began gathering seeds in various parts of Pennsylvania in the 1790s and others suggesting his apple-related endeavors began in earnest after apprenticing under an orchardist named Crawford around 1805.
And contrary to some stories of Johnny Appleseed randomly planting trees and orchards wherever he journeyed, Chapman tended instead to plant nurseries - collections of apple tree seedlings intended for care and curation until ready to be moved to orchards proper. These nurseries he often left in the care of a nearby resident who sold apple trees on shares, with Chapman returning from time to time to tend the trees.

Another lesser-known attribute of Johnny Appleseed’s focus and efforts was his self-
identified role as a Christian missionary. Specifically, Chapman was passionate in spreading the ideas and writings of the New Church, which adhered to the teachings of Swedish mystic and scientist Emanuel Swedenborg. In fact, the earliest written accounts of Chapman’s exploits hail not from the U.S., but in a Church of New Jerusalem newsletter published in England in 1817, which described an itinerant missionary who traveled about, spreading the church’s word and planting apple seeds. An 1822 letter from a New Church member, in fact, was the first to dub Chapman “John Appleseed.”
What seems not to have been exaggerated about Johnny Appleseed are many of the particulars of his eclectic dress and lifestyle. Firsthand accounts of his appearance tell of the oft-depicted longish hair and rather unkempt beard, and the tendency to travel barefoot, carrying a Bible and wearing a tin “mush pot” on his head, which served
simultaneously as hat and cooking utensil. Such accounts also tell of his frequently sleeping in the woods and seeking meals in exchange for apple seeds, or for his regaling his hosts with his animated style of storytelling or Christian preaching.
By all accounts, however, his work as a nurseryman and the land he accrued in his endeavors were such that Chapman was actually quite well off, financially (he left more than 1,200 acres of valuable nursery land to his sister at his death, in fact), but he made the choice to live his simple lifestyle as he did.
Similarly eclectic at the time were Chapman’s views and practices with regards to nature and the natural world. Not only did he make it his mission to spread the growth of apple trees, enthralled with the versatility and pleasures of apples as helpful to American pioneers and citizens in

general, but many accounts point to his going far out of his way to protect wild animals or nurse them when injured. Stories abounded of his having a pet wolf as a traveling companion, and later in life his views of all living things as needing protection due to their status as God’s creatures undergirded his vegetarianism.
John Chapman owned land, including one nursery with more than 15,000 trees, in Allen County, Indiana, home of the city of Fort Wayne, the site of his death in 1845. While some dispute exists about his exact death date, the most credible accounts, derived from newspapers of the day, place it at March 18.
The Goshen Democrat newspaper at the time wrote of the death of “John Chapman, commonly known by the name of Johnny Appleseed, about 70 years of age. Many of our citizens will remember this eccentric individual, as he sauntered through town eating his dry
rusk and cold meat, and freely conversing on the mysteries of his religious faith.”
Johnny Appleseed’s legend only grew in the years following his death. From the 19th century to today, countless songs, poems and books have been written about him, and he has become the subject of everything from memorials to museums, and even an animated Disney short.
Fort Wayne’s minor league baseball team of today takes its name, the Tincaps, from the pot Appleseed wore on his head, and in 1974 that city held the first of its annual Johnny Appleseed Festivals (which still take place during the third full weekend in September) in, among other locales, Johnny Appleseed Park. The park takes its name for its proximity to Chapman’s grave, whose location has been the source of some debate. Some claim his grave resides elsewhere in the city, at the site of the cabin where he
died, though strong evidence supports Chapman having been buried in the Archer Cemetery, which would have been in proximity to today’s “official” site of the Johnny Appleseed grave.
The grave also connects Johnny

Appleseed’s story to a closer-to-home Lakes-area tale, that of the late Dr. Joseph Hafert. Hafert, who lived in Logansport much of his adult life and headed a successful dental practice until 1969 in the Lakes-area town of Fulton, grew up in the Fort Wayne area. As a Boy Scout patrol leader in 1924, Hafert and fellow Scouts were digging for sassafras roots while on a hike in what was then wilderness in the Fort Wayne area.
“About five or six of us found the gravestone hidden under all the growth and brush,” Hafert, whose family had a summer cottage on Lake Maxinkuckee for many years, told the Culver Citizen newspaper in 1976.
“The grave was on a sandy, grassy knoll overlooking the river just a few hundred feet away…surrounded by an iron fence.”
Chapman’s name and death date were still readable on the gravestone, said Hafert,
who added that he “knew the legend [of Chapman’s grave in Fort Wayne], and the following week made my discovery known.”
Once the word got out, considerable effort was made to restore the gravesite, eventually resulting in the well-kept memorial not far off busy Coliseum Boulevard in Fort Wayne today.
Hafert’s contribution to Appleseed’s legacy had been forgotten over the years until, after reading an article on Appleseed and the American Bicentennial in 1976 in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette newspaper, Hafert wrote the paper to give an eyewitness account of his rediscovery of the grave.
That same year, the committee behind the Johnny Appleseed Festival awarded Hafert the first John Chapman Pioneer Spirit Award pewter bucket for his contributions to Chapman’s legacy more
than 50 years earlier. And so, as you’re taking a bite of that autumn apple or a sip of cider this fall, take a moment to appreciate the contributions of that American legend who became a Hoosier legend, still celebrated and memorialized these many years hence.

There is something about setting foot inside a toy store that instantly puts a smile on your face. That is exactly what you will experience when you head over to Mimsy Toys.
Located in the heart of Main Street in downtown Goshen, Mimsy Toys is a oneof-a-kind shop. The business is owned and operated by a husband-and-wife
team, Megan and Tim Hochstetler. What started as a mere vision turned into a reality when they officially opened in November of 2018. The store is located in the back half of TG Music.
When you walk in, you will pass by guitars and all types of musical equipment as you make your way down the hall to Mimsy Toys. As Megan puts it, “Just
follow the monkeys.” You will be led to the cutest little toy store in the area. Once you walk into her shop, you can tell that it is not your ordinary toy store.
Megan or one of the friendly staff members will greet you with a friendly face and upbeat attitude. The store might be quaint, but it is packed full of items from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

Some of the first items you may notice are the adorable stuffed animals hanging all around the store. They range from small to large and would make great buddies for the little ones in your life.
As you continue to look around, you will find unique items such as fidget toys, games, arts, crafts and dolls - all from a variety of unique brands.
One of these brands is Playmobil. It is a top-selling brand at Mimsy Toys and features eco-friendly toys. What sets Playmobil apart from other brands is its use of recycled materials. That is a very important value to Megan and Tim, and they strive to educate their customers on how using eco-friendly materials helps set their store apart from others.
Another very popular brand is HABA. These wooden toys combine creativity, education and imagination for the whole family. They are high quality and durable, making them great items for kids to use today and tomorrow. They are the perfect addition to a toy collection that will spark excitement while discovering new skills and experiences.
Megan’s background began in childhood education. She graduated with a degree from Indiana University South Bend and originally was a preschool and elementary school teacher. She would go on to have children and saw a need for healthy toys for them. When she decided to get out of education, she used that knowledge, along with being a mother, to open her own toy store. As she saw how young children interacted with toys she realized how it

truly shapes their brains, starting at a very young age.
That is when the couple decided to bring a very special type of children’s store to the Goshen area. Megan says the toys are for babies, kids, or kids at heart. Many of the products are made from recycled milk jugs, which makes them safe for kids to play with and helps the toy industry be more green and sustainable.
Whether you are shopping for a newborn or child, or a gift for friends and family, you are sure to find something rare at Mimsy Toys. The vibe in the building is eccentric and quirky, which makes it a blast to shop around and find items you won’t find elsewhere. If you have any questions about where the products are sourced or how to use them, Megan and her team will gladly help. It is also a great place to take your kiddos if you are looking for a fun stop during your day out.
Mimsy Toys also participates in downtown

KOSCIUSKO CARES
Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photography Provided
The name of the agency tucked into a modest suite of offices is simply: Kosciusko Cares.
But, oh, what a wealth of wisdom that is encompassed by those two little words. For so many young people who are in need of guidance, outreach, and empathy, Kosciusko Cares is not only defined as a place to grow--it represents a way of being.
“The mission of the Kosciusko Cares Youth Services is to advocate, support, and promote healthy youth development,” Melanie Wilhite says, who serves as the director. “We work to prevent substance use in youth and help youth make healthy decisions through our evidence-based programs. We serve youth through schools, Baker’s Youth Club, teen court, and probation. We measure outcomes using survey instruments designed by the curriculum developers and we use outcomes measurement tools designed by the Indiana Youth Institute. All of our programs are theoretically connected to risk and protective factors in the community.”
This initiative was launched in 2012, financed through a grant funded by the Indiana Department of Mental Health and Addiction. Their operation exists under the 501(c)3 umbrella of the Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Services, Inc. Kosciusko Cares is located in the Health Services Pavilion on Provident Drive, just off of U.S. 30 in Warsaw.

The Kosciusko Cares team of leaders is bolstered by the talents of Heidi Blake, Director of Drug-Free Communities, along with Jackie Thornsbury, Program Coordinator. Together, these women have carefully cultivated a series of programs for youngsters on the best ways to navigate some of the more pressing challenges that face kids of today. Through empowerment, kids can be encouraged to make better decisions that are so detrimental to their journey as they face down the unique situations and various crossroads that have come about in merely a short stretch of years.
For example, one of the ongoing platforms that Kosciusko Cares has recently launched is “Social Norms: Positive Cultural Framework.” By reinforcing positive messages, the platform lends credence to the reality of how the majority of teens are not subjecting themselves to the harmful practices of using chemical substances. These messages are delivered in colorful, attention garnering means, like using restroom stall covers, posters, movie theater posters and billboards and social media bites. The takeaway motto is: “We do what’s right...not what’s easy.”
Another buzzy campaign that Kosciusko Cares is giving traction to is based upon the simplest of principles called: “Talk... They Hear You.” Although it sounds quite basic, the campaign stresses the importance and significance of engaging children

in conversation often and especially when they are young. Similar forms of promotional methods are being used to move this incentive forward and work to strengthen trust between parents and children.
With the rise of the Covid pandemic, combined with the technological age the current generation is evolving within, information can come at children at an intense and dizzying measure of speed. It’s an environment that makes their lives so much more complex and it can sometimes cloud their judgment—which is why,
Wilhite says, that these programs are perhaps more important today than ever before.
“Covid had a serious impact on the mental health and wellbeing of our youth and families,” she says. “Vaping has become an epidemic, and youth alcohol rates have increased. Family units have become fragmented with divorce, substance use and incarceration, with grandparents raising their grandkids.”

To that end, Kosciusko Cares has courses that are customized to the appropriate age levels and situations that face families today.
There is “Al’s Pals: Kids Making Healthy Choices,” which involves a teacher-based curriculum to help children ages three to eight practice self-control, good decision making, and working to become better problem solvers. For older children, there is Botvin Lifeskills Training, which is a more intensive program to educate on alternatives to dangerous behaviors, often utilizing frank discussions and group activities.
There is also a movement known as “W.A.I.T. What Am I Thinking,” which is modified for all ages. With books, group discussions, videos, and other facilitation items, the goal is to give children and adults a reason to pause before plunging headlong into a situation and realizing that actions have consequences. A program of a longer duration is the 14-week course for “Strengthening Families,” which includes the entire family in a deeper exploration of the dynamics that drive their daily lives and how the course of everyone’s lives can be improved upon.
And while Kosciusko Cares is emboldened by the success stories of the organization, they understand there is always work to be done.
“We are discussing parent cafes and youth brain summits with our
youth coalition,” Wilhite says. “Hosting more community events to build awareness on substance use. Continuing to collect local data through our surveys, we know what strategies and programs to implement in our community. We are planning a “Strengthening Families” program in partnership with Kosciusko County Community Corrections, and we plan to partner with the Kosciusko County Jail in 2024 with programs to help inmates successfully reenter into the community.”
The successes of one person can create a ripple effect that reaches far and wide and the folks behind Kosciusko Cares are very aware of this.
“We are blessed with a robust coalition comprised of influential community leaders who are dedicated to our mission,” Wilhite says.
“They help us to gather data and engage in community events to combat substance use. We partner together to use their individual strengths to build awareness of Kosciusko Cares and our services.”

BAKED BY VI CELEBRATES ITS ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Provided
Sometimes, in the gentle silence of the deepest nights, Viana “Vi” Miller finds herself consumed by a somewhat restless energy. It’s a feeling of profound anticipation, a sense that there are times of greatness just around the bend.
And it’s the sensation that fuels her excitement for her rapidly growing baking business, a dream that started in her own kitchen. Miller discovered that she had a very particular talent that has literally changed the lives of her customers.
“The energy is electric. I can feel it,” Miller says. “It keeps me awake at night.”
And from that energy has arisen Baked by Vi, the culmination of inspiration for Miller, who has long enjoyed the art of baking. In the fall of 2022, Miller discovered an opportunity to open her own shop in historic downtown New Paris, and business has been brisk and booming ever since.
What makes Miller’s business so distinctly unique is that she creates products that are designed for folks who have specific dietary needs. In Miller’s perspective, she wants her customers to become enlightened about what foods that they are free to enjoy, and to feel less intimidated by limitations. Baked by Vi has introduced patrons to a way of eating that they could have only ever envisioned in their minds before. In particular, Miller’s baked goods feature options that are free of gluten, dairy, eggs, and sugar, along with selections that cater to those following a keto or paleo diet, and those affected by gluten intolerance.
Miller’s penchant for baking started out as a home-based enterprise, one that she not only loved, but had a natural talent for. Eventually, her custom orders became numerous enough that they spilled over into other places in her home—Miller laughs thinking about filling up her husband’s man cave with them. So, he built Miller a bigger kitchen.
As her small business took flight, Miller also realized that she was

drawn to a lifestyle in which simple, less processed, and healthy ingredients were featured. While visiting her daughter, who lives overseas, she saw firsthand how vastly different American food has become, with an emphasis on convenience and minimal attention given to the purity of the ingredients. She was surprised to learn that certain foods, which had proven bothersome for her in America, were more palatable there, largely in part due to the freshness of their food and its components.
In 2018, Miller began selling her items at the Goshen Farmers Market, and the response was not only immediate, but immense. One very memorable day that Miller still recalls vividly was when a young boy stopped by her booth with his family, and in the ensuing conversation, it was revealed that he had never eaten a doughnut before, on account of food allergies. Miller soon realized that she had something that would be safe for him to try. Upon taking his first bite, the boy was moved to tears, as were multiple onlookers.
When Baked by Vi opened its doors at its historic New Paris location, there were other amazing stories to follow. Like the family who had not set foot in a bakery in over a decade, because they didn’t believe they’d find something that wouldn’t be a trigger. Or the customer who was tempted by the luscious selection of scones but wasn’t convinced that there were any she could have. These are just a few examples of why Miller feels blessed by what she does. “It’s just been a God thing. In my wildest imagination, I could’ve never imagined owning a specialty bakery,” Miller says.
Ensconced in her charming downtown storefront, Baked by Vi has

developed an impressive following, drawing customers from as far away as Columbia City, Chicago, West Lafayette, Aurora, Wabash, and Michigan.
“If a customer comes in here and tells me what their concerns are, I tell them that we’ll work through it,” she says. “I love to be a part of the journey.”
Miller considers herself quite fortunate in that she is surrounded by a staff that is equally passionate and committed to the cause. Her team includes Donna Yoder, who is a principal baker; Lyssa Yoder, who works with the creation of spices, mixes, and condiments; and Jen Schlorke, whose specialty is soups, sandwiches, and breakfast items.

In the meantime, stop by Baked by Vi and check out their incredible selections of pastries and other baked goods. Dine-in and carryout is available during business hours.
The store’s hours are Tuesdays through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. They are closed on Sunday and Monday.
