Local Moms Launch Unique Business to Support Special Needs Children Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne
Through the years, Lindsay Head and her friend Julie Harrison have spent a good bit of time hugging it out and lifting each other up. As mothers to special needs children, they have been a source of support for each other during difficult and stressful times. Both of them have two boys and a girl. Lindsay has Cadence (13), Cael (10) and Lincoln (3). Julie has Connor (16), Evan (15) and Taylor (14). Evan is on the spectrum for autism, and Lincoln has a rare chromosomal deletion syndrome called DiGeorge Syndrome or 22q. Caused by a defect in chromosome 22, it results in the poor development of several body systems. “Basically, anything midline can become an issue,” Head says. “He’s had a lot of cardiac issues. He’s considered globally delayed, so everything from fine motor to developmental to speech is behind.”
Evan, though considered high-functioning, has a hard time connecting socially, making friends and maintaining eye contact. “Julie and I were talking one day and commented how great it would be to start a business that our special needs children could help run,” Head says. The women were also lamenting that when it comes to shopping for boys, options are scarce. “From toddler to teenager, there is nothing out there for boys — not for clothing or bath & body care or even fun shoelaces,” Harrison says. The friends saw an opportunity to fill the gap.
They launched Lucky Linc, inspiration derived from Lindsay’s son’s nickname. “At 3 and a half years old, Lincoln has gone through more than most 90-year-olds in terms of procedures, therapies, surgeries and hospital stays,” Head says. “We call him our Lucky Linc.” Lindsay and Julie put together boxes every month, donating 10 percent of their profits to foundations near and dear to their hearts. Five percent goes to The 22q Family Foundation and five percent to Autism Speaks. Each themed box, which may be purchased one time or subscribed in monthly increments, includes apparel and cool, new products. For instance, the outdoor campingthemed box includes throwable paintballs and a shampoo bar that smells like a campfire and is shaped like a bar of soap.
“We decided since we’re moms of boys that this could be our focus, though we purposefully made it gender neutral because “We include fun but practical items,” some girls like boys’ stuff,” Head says. Harrison says. 4 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / WestfieldMag.com
The apparel consists of sensory-friendly ultrasoft cotton with no tags in the merchandise. In addition, they sell “addon” items such as t-shirts that say “Mom of Boys” or “Amazingly Awesome.” Lindsay’s husband Adam and Julie’s husband Steve have been incredibly supportive of the business. In fact, Steve even converted his man-cave into a workroom, complete with shelving, desk, mail station and an area devoted to screen printing. “All three of my kids help with the business, working in their capacities,” Harrison says. The hope is that one day Evan and Lincoln can run the business. “We’re realistic,” Head says. “The concept of managing money is very hard for them so they will need some help, but if we can give them something that they can put their name on, they will feel empowered. These

kids have had to work so hard to achieve the goals of typical kids. “They just want to belong,” Harrison says. “That’s it.” The women hope that this business will shine some light on what’s possible for those with special needs, despite the various challenges. It all starts with educating the general public. Head was recently talking to a group of parents who shared how prior to having children with disabilities, they were clueless about how to behave around those with special needs. One mom confided, “I was fearful of how to act and what to say so I did and said nothing.” “We want people to know that it’s okay to approach our kids and ask questions,” Head says. “These are capable individuals who just need a little assistance here and there.” For more information, visit luckylincadventures.com.

PASTO ITALIANO CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING IN WESTFIELD Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ryan Woodall
Kent and Patsy McNall, co-owners of Pasto Italiano, 3150 East State Road 32, Westfield, have already had several repeat customers since they opened their doors in November. “We have had some guests who have visited us five times between the day we
opened through December,” Kent says. “We have really received an enthusiastic response and been thrilled with all of the positive feedback.”
is made fresh,” Patsy says. “Our chef, Tim Brater, does an excellent job, and so has Deb Alexander, our general manager. Our guests have been very pleased.”
Patsy believes the delicious food has been one of the main reasons people keep coming back.
Kent noted that theIr delicious Spaghetti and Meatballs have been a big draw. Patsy’s hand-crafted meatballs and marinara sauce over spaghetti are outstanding.
“We make our own sauces and everything

“People love them,” Kent says. “They also enjoy our Gnocchi, a house made ricotta gnocchi in a truffle cream sauce with mushrooms and green beans.” The Shrimp and Risotto, a grilled shrimp on a bed of sweet pea and Parmesan risotto with lemon butter, is also a big seller. Patsy says the Grilled Salmon Romesco, with sweet pea and Parmesan risotto, and spinach with house-made romesco, has also been popular as well. “Our Manhattan Strip Steak has also been getting people to come back, too,” Patsy adds. “It’s delicious. Our guests also enjoy our Lasagna, Linguine Alfredo and Tuscan Vegetarian Pasta.” Pasto Italiano also offers Antipasta dishes including Calamari, Bruschetta, and Clams, among other choices. Kent and Patsy have turned their strong previous restaurant experience into a positive environment at Pasto Italiano. “We both worked at a very successful restaurant in Fort Meyers, Florida, called CIBO,” Kent says, “It was voted as one of the top five restaurants out of 738 restaurants. They had a chef there, Sean Decker, who was extremely helpful to us in getting Pasto Italiano started. He helped us a lot with the menu.” The McNalls are in the same spot that J.Razzo’s 2 previously occupied. “The owner closed last September,” Kent says. “We went through two months of renovations to get everything ready.” Pasto Italiano has an intimate setting, comfortable tables and an eight-seat bar. The elegant tables and environment are perfect for a relaxing and cozy dinner date. “I think there is a strong need for a restaurant like this in the area,” Kent says. “Westfield is great. I think we are in a perfect location. We are so close to Noblesville and Carmel, so we expect to get a lot of business from there. We have already filled the bar area on Fridays.” Patsy adds that it is a good idea to make reservations for a table.
“It really helps, especially for the weekend,” Patsy says. “We have open tables, but guests can call us during business hours or leave a message to make a reservation. We have popular specials of the day, such as a halfprice bottle of wine on Wednesdays and pasta specials on Sundays where you can get two dinners for $25. We have the Spaghetti and Meatballs or the Spaghetti Bolognese, each with a house salad.” The McNalls are looking forward to having outdoor dining in the warm weather months. “We really have been so pleased with all of the great things everyone has had to say about the food and the new renovations,” Kent says. “We couldn’t be happier.” Pasto Italiano is located at 3150 East State Road 32 in Westfield. The clubhouse has two restaurants: Chats on the Hill and Hamilton’s Bar & Grill. Chats on the Hill boasts yummy AM offerings such as made-to-order omelets, avocado toast, Chorizo breakfast burritos, fresh fruit and granola. “It’s got a coffee-house feel with quick service,” Benish says. Lunch and dinner items include burgers, nachos, wings, wraps and fresh salads.
Hamilton’s Bar & Grill, an upscale sports bar, offers Chilean sea bass, ribeye, pastas and vegan options. They also have a great wine list and a number of local draft beers. They work with local purveyors to serve the freshest food possible. Hamilton’s also has two private dining rooms — one of which can seat up to 16 and the other 44 — ideal for rehearsal dinners, special parties and work functions. For larger events like weddings, luncheons and proms, the Sky Ballroom, with an incredible view of the Chatham Valley, can seat up to 225 people without a dance floor or 200 with a dance floor. Guests can relax beside the gas fireplace and enjoy hot cocoa or hot toddies.
And here’s a fun fact: The Clubhouse sells Chatham honey that comes from the two beehives by hole 12.

Pastors, Matt Gaylor and Brad Ruggles
Better Together has become increasingly polarized, we choose to be known more for what we’re for than what we’re against.”
Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ryan Woodall
NSPIRE Church in Westfield has its doors open wide to welcome new faces. “We like to say that NSPIRE is the perfect church for imperfect people,” says Brad Ruggles, formation pastor for NSPIRE Church. “We’re all just every day broken people trying to figure out our faith journey together. One of our volunteers recently painted a large mural in our lobby with wording that has become a mantra for us here: ‘You belong here.’ Everyone is welcome at NSPIRE, no matter who they are, or what their church background is.” Engagement Pastor Matt Gaylor agrees with Ruggles. “We like to say that you can belong before you believe,” Gaylor says. “In a world that
Ruggles noted that they chose the name NSPIRE because it fits their mission.
Gaylor and Ruggles knew each other from working alongside one another in Westfield. The two churches shared a similar mission for actively serving in the community.
“What started out as a joint Christmas service in 2015 turned into combined series “The word comes from the Latin inspirare, in the summer of 2016, until both churches which means ‘to breathe into,’” Ruggles says. realized that things were just clicking,” Ruggles says. “We exist to breathe life into our city. We do that through fun community events like the Westfield Easter Egg Drop (now in its Gaylor saw the same positive path. eighth year), or Movies In the Park, which we put on every summer in partnership with “We believed two things: we were better the City of Westfield.” together than we were on our own and we could go further faster,” Gaylor says. “Both NSPIRE has a unique backstory. of those things have proven to be true.” “The church that exists today started out as two Westfield church plants — Imagine Church and CitySpring Church, both of whom were portable for more than six years,” Ruggles says.
Both churches voted to merge together and on August 28 formed what is now known as NSPIRE Church. Ruggles and Gaylor became co-pastors, equally sharing the vision and weekly messages, but both with

individual areas of oversight. Ruggles says that he is the Engagement Pastor, and “helps people get plugged in through volunteering and challenges our church to remain engaged in the community through service projects. Brad is the Formation Pastor and oversees groups and practices to help people grow on their faith journey.” NSPIRE got its start as a portable church meeting in Oak Trace Elementary and other schools in Westfield. “Every week, we rolled everything out of a trailer and set up what we needed for service only to pack it back in the trailer when we were done,” Ruggles says. “So can you imagine how excited we are to finally have our very own building.”
NSPIRE’s dedicated volunteers renovated an abandoned lumber yard over the course of 11 months. “To say it was rough would be an understatement,” Ruggles says. “The building had no plumbing or heat and next to no electrical wiring. It was also home to a family of raccoons (that were lovingly relocated) and had holes in the walls.” NSPIRE members worked hard to make everything a reality. “Our people rallied behind the idea that, in keeping with our name, we could breathe new life into this dead space,” Ruggles says. “Other than the commercial elements like electrical and HVAC, everything else was renovated with volunteer labor. Thanks to the thousands of hours of work by our
dedicated volunteers and through donated items like commercial doors or windows, we were able to transform this derelict lumber yard into a functional space for our church.” New possibilities for the church have also became a reality. “We are trying to rethink what a church can do in a community,” Ruggles says. “We consider every resource that we possess as an opportunity to make a positive impact in our community. This is how things like the Easter Egg Drop and Westfield Movies in the Park were born.” Some of the things NSPIRE does aren’t typical church events. “We have a unique men’s group called ‘Brew Theology,’where guys get together once a
month to brew craft beer with our resident brewmaster,” Ruggles says. “While the beer is brewing, we engage in lively discussions about God, faith and life. Jesus turned water into wine. We add grain and yeast and turn ours into craft beer.” Ruggles adds that “though we have only been in our new space for a few months, we are already dreaming of ways to leverage it to make a big difference in our city. We think the best is yet to come.” Gaylor agrees. “This fall has been a blast as we’ve seen many young families come through our doors and connect with us,” Gaylor says. “Our building helps us communicate what we are trying to do with everything we have been blessed with at NSPIRE.” NSPIRE Church is located at 18097 Sun Park Drive in Westfield. You can also visit them online at nspire.church.

came as no surprise that when it was time to choose some of his elective courses, the Westfield High School student sought out classes that played to those interests.
“I took the Ivy Tech Construction class last year as a junior and this year, I’m taking the Automotive Technology Course,” he says. “Not only are they the kinds of classes that might benefit me in my future career, but they are the kinds of everyday life skills that everyone can use.” Chandler is the first Westfield High School student to participate in both programs, which are housed in the old Noblesville High School Building and according to his instructor, it’s an opportunity that the senior has not taken for granted. “These are real college courses with
“Once I started trying to narrow down my dream job, I knew I did not want to be a veterinarian, but that is about all I could figure out. I hope one day I can figure out what career I want, but for now, I know it must be working with animals.” Eggleston noted that Westfield has some of the best teachers. “Almost every single teacher I have had since first grade I have really liked. With Westfield teachers you can tell they want every single one of their students to succeed, and they try to make that happen. I have had so many teachers inspire me, and make me want to be a better person and student.” Eggleston has a favorite teacher. “One teacher that will forever have a place in my heart and will forever be my absolute

for graduation along with a 2.5 GPA – the same as any other Ivy Tech student. “I really enjoyed seeing what the college atmosphere was like,” Chandler says. “I got to know what the workload was like and meet kids who go to other schools so my friendships were broadened out a bit. I also enjoyed having Mr. Huettl as an instructor. He’s a very smart man who operates his automotive tech class like a science lab. There’s not a lot of homework, but there is a lot of practical application.” Chandler’s passion for hands-on learning was inspired in part by his father Michael who taught him the importance of selfreliance. He says he watched his dad work on his 1973 Plymouth Duster and realized there was a lot of pride in doing something yourself rather than paying someone else to do it for you.
After graduation, Chandler will attend Western Kentucky University where he plans to major in construction management. While he won’t design the buildings he helps create the way architects do, he will be responsible for making sure the crews are organized, that best practices are followed and that the end result is completed on time and on budget. “It’s the best of both worlds,” he says. “It’s not manual labor but a management job that requires you to understand the practical aspects of the construction industry.” Chandler says he hopes other Westfield students consider participating in Ivy Tech’s partnership programs, but make no mistake, they are no easy A. “Dual credit courses are AP courses and they are a lot harder than you think,” he says. “Still the stuff you learn can be really beneficial to your future so they are definitely worth it.”
“There’s a lot of trial and error to it, but in the end, it’s worth the effort,” he says.

Parenting is hard enough without having the entire world able to judge us with a quick text, picture, video or message. How much harder is it for our children? Do we know the most recent social media craze? How do we know what’s safe and what is not? How do we talk to our children about technology we weren’t raised with and are just now experiencing ourselves? Let’s get together for a guided, open conversation to figure this out together. Feel free to participate as little or as much as you want in the conversation. All are welcome, refreshments provided. Washington Woods Elementary School 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
