PUBLISHER’S WELCOME all levels of Noblesville Schools, with two in Noblesville High School and one at Hinkle Creek Elementary. We have frequented many events at the Westfield schools and fields of play for a variety of sports. Needless to say we are a busy household.
As a resident of Hamilton County for more than 38 years, I have experienced the charm and witnessed the growth of Westfield as a neighboring community to my hometown. As we all celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Westfield becoming a city, we can take pride in Westfield being recognized as the Best Small City in America and the 3rd Best City to Raise a Family. As Westfield continues to grow, it is exciting to see major brands move into the city along with a host of other retailers and, most importantly, independent and local restaurants, boutiques and start-ups. My wife, Peggy and I, and our combined family of six children, currently reside in Noblesville in North Harbor, where I grew up playing golf with my father and friends at Harbor Trees Golf Club. FORMER OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATER MARIE MILLIKAN STILL FINDS FULFILLMENT IN THE SPORT SHE LOVES Marie Millikan, head skating instructor at the Carmel Ice Skadium, represented Czechoslovakia in the 1968 Olympic With the 2018 Winter Olympics upon us Winter Games in Grenoble, France, and droves of Hoosiers no doubt anxious to finishing in 21st place overall amidst a see some of the world’s most elite athletes highly competitive field that included threecompete thousands of miles away in South time world champion Peggy Fleming, who Korea, many Carmel and Westfield residents took home the only gold medal for the U.S. might not be aware that they have a former that year. recalls of her Olympic experience. “When you’re marching in for the opening ceremonies and the leader of the country you’re in is out there, it’s very, very uplifting. The Olympics are every athlete’s ultimate goal, and you know when you’re there that there are millions of athletes in the world but just a small number that get to be there.” Born in Prague in 1948, Millikan was on the ice by age four, slowly kindling a passion

for figure skating that has remained strong for more than six decades. After competing in the ’68 Olympics, as well as the 1967 and 1968 World Championships and several international competitions along the way, she traveled through Europe, Asia and South America as the principal skater with Holiday on Ice, a family-oriented ice show. In 1970, soon after retiring from professional skating, Millikan settled on the northside of Indy with her first husband, a U.S. native whom she met in Japan, and began coaching young skaters at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and the former Ice Dome near Keystone at the Crossing. By the fall of 1974 the Carmel Ice Skadium had officially opened its doors, and Millikan has instructed skaters of all ages and skill levels at the facility ever since. “When the Ice Skadium was built there was nothing around here but a dirt road and bushes,” she recalls. “When I was told where the rink was going to be built I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, nobody’s ever going to find us!’ Carmel has blossomed so much since then.” At age 69, Millikan is as busy as ever with coaching duties at the Ice Skadium, and she’s also worked for the Associated Press over the years covering eight Olympic Winter Games and several World Figure Skating Championships as an analyst and translator (if you think her skating accomplishments sound impressive, consider her linguistic expertise – she’s fluent in Czech, Slovak, Russian, French, German and English). “I’ve gotten to interview a lot of skaters and coaches and various officials, and a lot of my friends from my skating time have become coaches and judges through the years, so I had easy access to them when others didn’t,” Millikan says. “I can recall during the time of the Soviet Union, athletes there weren’t allowed to talk to anybody but they’d talk to me because the coaches and people there knew me from when we were children together.” As it happens, Millikan isn’t the only former pro athlete connected to the Carmel Ice Skadium – it’s co-owned by professional bowling hall-of-famer Mike Aulby, a southside Indy native who graduated from Franklin Central High School. Aulby is also the owner of Arctic Zone Iceplex in Westfield.
Marie Millikan represented Czechoslovakia in the 1968 Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble, France.
“MOST PEOPLE HAVE THEIR WORK AND THEY HAVE A HOBBY, BUT MY HOBBY IS MY WORK.”
Aulby joined the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) tour not long after high school, and went on to become one of bowling’s name amongst names, winning 29 titles throughout a 25-year career that landed him in the sixth spot in the PBA’s 50 Greatest Players in History list in 2009, according to the association’s official web site. His talents even landed him a few spots on “Late Night With David Letterman.” Aulby feels fortunate to have Millikan at his facility, not only as a coach but also as a role model for aspiring skaters young and old. “She’s great, and we’re lucky to have her over at the Ice Skadium,” he says. “Having been there from the beginning, she’s been a big part of our success there.” At age 69, Millikan’s passion for skating has never flagged, and she says her coaching and analyst roles have seldom felt like burdensome responsibilities throughout her lengthy career.

“Most people have their work and they have a hobby, but my hobby is my work,” she says. “I love what I am doing, and I have a variety of people I deal with from age four all the way to adult skaters. And of course as a coach you’re involved with music, choreography and costuming. It’s not just the athletic skills, it’s the performance and the artistry. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.” So how does she feel U.S. skaters will fare in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games? “The U.S. team has been going through ups and downs in the last few years –we’ve always had big stars like Brian Boitano and Michelle Kwan, but that hasn’t happened in the recent years,” she says. “Our pair teams aren’t near the top of the field, but right now I think the U.S. has a good chance in ice dancing because we have some good dance teams that have been placing in the World Championships. We’ll see.”

SUBURBAN INDY SHOWS DEBUTS SPRING SHOW AT GRAND PARK EVENTS CENTER
Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photography Provided
The second in a quartet of shows is set to debut at the Grand Park Event Center in Westfield. Suburban Indy Shows is launching the Home & Outdoor Living Spring Show February 8-11. This follows on the heels of their successful fall show last September. Owner and producer Donell Walton has been producing events for 17 years, and 2017 was the year that circumstances made it possible for her to launch her own business. She signed a five-year contract with Grand Park to produce four shows each year: • Home & Outdoor Living Spring Show • Women’s Show (March 2018) • Home & Outdoor Living Fall Show • Holiday Show (November 15-18, 2018)
LINEUP OF SPRING SHOW Walton is readying final preparations for the Spring Show. She likes to encourage attenders to “BYOD or bring your own dreams.” Her primary goal is to connect
homeowners with local businesses they can trust to help bring those dreams to reality. Here’s what to expect: Design Open House: In this area attendees can browse through and be inspired by styled rooms, outdoor living spaces, and gardens designed by some of Indy’s top suburban designers. Belgard Showcase Stage: Bring a notebook and take notes on the presentations and events offered throughout the day and evening. Exhibitors: Walton and her team have carefully screened and chosen only the best exhibitors. Neighborhood Marketplace: Suburban Indy Shows believes in supporting neighborhood small businesses. Expect to find quality products in all of the following categories and more: recycled/ upcycled products, honey and syrups, homemade bath and body products, candles, aprons, towels, kitchen gadgets, artisan chocolate, hand-painted items, stained glass, handmade furniture and other wood products, Hoosier-based
merchandise, fashion, living walls, living fences, moss walls, spices, sauces, dips, fall nursery plants and decor, storage solutions and wine.
THEME OF THE DAY Each day of the show features a different theme such as SAHM’s Day out, Date Night, Friends & Family Day and Kid’s Day (Sunday). The youngest in the crowd will enjoy magicians, princesses, story time and arts and crafts.
WHAT MAKES THE SUBURBAN INDY SHOW DIFFERENT FROM THE REST? • They have a prime location that includes free parking. • They are locally owned. • They welcome people as they enter. • They don’t allow pushy exhibitors. • They donate 10 percent to charity. • They have awesome food and drink available at the Grand Park cafeteria and bar and restaurant on the upper level catered by the Westfield Restaurant Group.

Walton also emphasizes quality over quantity when it comes to the exhibitors. “I want a nice, well put-together quality show without the annoyances of a lot of the other larger shows that you go to,” she says.
Thinking about Selling, Building or Buying this year? We helped over 50 families last year and we would love to help yours this Spring.

After the Fall Show was over, they realized they attracted a smaller but highly engaged customer base who interacted with the exhibitors and experts. In many cases customers were even able to begin discussing their projects with the business owners.
BEST TIP FOR ATTENDING Walton advices that people make a todo list of which projects they want to complete in the next six months to five years and then collect information on the design experts they’d like to work with for each project. “It’s ok to plan far out and collect information you need for future reference,” she says. She also advocates that if you feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of a project to tackle it over time. “It’s not all or none,” Walton says. “Do a bit at a time.”

February is American Heart Month, but more commonly, the focus is on chocolate hearts instead of the hearts inside our bodies. Your significant other might hold the key to your heart this Valentine’s Day, but take a minute to ensure your actual heart will remain healthy for many Valentine’s Days to come. HOW CAN YOU DO THAT?
The simplest way is by talking with your doctor about a heart scan. WHAT IS A HEART SCAN?
“A heart scan gives doctors a picture of the heart’s arteries,” explains Dr. Sami Aasar, cardiologist at Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital. “A heart scan is used to detect calcium levels. The amount of calcium helps doctors determine the level of cholesterol buildup in the arteries, and that tells us if a person is at risk of having a heart attack.” Calcium buildup in the coronary arteries is an early sign of coronary heart disease (CHD). CHD is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. Over time, plaque can harden or rupture, leading to serious heart conditions like chronic chest pain, heart attack, heart failure and arrhythmias.
WHO SHOULD GET A HEART SCAN?
Heart scans are generally suggested by your physician based on factors that may put you at an increased risk for heart problems, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high body mass index, diabetes, smoking or a family history of aneurysm or heart disease. “Not everyone needs a heart scan,” Dr. Aasar says. “Generally speaking, if you are under 40 years of age, active and able to exercise without limitations, your risk for having heart disease is low.” WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A HEART SCAN?
All together—checking in, registering and getting the heart scan—the process usually takes less than 45 minutes. During the test, patients are hooked up to small electrodes and scanned using a computed tomography (CT) scanner. Once the heart scan is complete, your physician or cardiologist will recommend an appropriate plan of action to help reduce any risks you may have. Most plans include a diet and exercise program. Heart scans are typically conducted every five to 10 years on individuals ages 40+ with known risk factors.
However, anyone can request to have a heart scan. To learn more, talk with your doctor, or visit iuhealth.org/ heart-scan.
A HEART SCAN IS CONVENIENT, SIMPLE AND IT MIGHT CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

are more likely to be victims or perpetuators themselves, so we want to stop that cycle of abuse before it starts by showing them what a healthy relationship is.”
Kelly Growden, Primary Prevention Specialist at Prevail, regularly visits middle schools in the area to teach the “Safe Dates” program, a curriculum that discusses red flags of an unhealthy relationship, as well as boundary setting. “Teens need to make decisions about what’s okay and what’s not because when people don’t honor your boundaries, that can quickly turn dangerous,” Ferguson says. This is true of sexual and other boundaries. “Even deciding how much time you’re going to spend with someone or how quickly you’re expected to reply to a text message is important because when one person in the relationship thinks that the other person

owes them their time, it can get ugly. Plus, as you begin neglecting other relationships, it becomes isolating,” she says. Prevail staff are proactive in establishing a community that will not tolerate violent behavior. “We want to create safe, stable, nurturing environments for kids so that as they grow up, they don’t feel a need to exert power and control in their relationships,” Ferguson adds. Since February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month, several schools are planning an “Orange Out” during sporting events (orange is the color that symbolizes teen violence awareness). Noblesville High students are creating fleece tie blankets for those who participate in Prevail’s support groups. HSE students are producing a video project to spread the word about Prevail. Westfield is coordinating a Parent Night to encourage parents to initiate conversations with their teens about such difficult topics. Growden says that parents are a big factor in preventing dating violence. “They can learn the warning signs, talk early and often, and stay engaged,” says Growden, noting that 45 percent of parents have not discussed teen dating violence with their children in the last 12 months because they think their kids are too young to explore dating, they don’t know what to say, or they assume their children will learn about it through experience. “There are lots of great conversation guides available from groups like Love Is Respect, Break the Cycle and Futures Without Violence.” Ferguson, who has been a domestic violence advocate for 12 years, insists that Prevail is all about empowerment. “By shining a light on this topic, we give an opportunity for those to seek help instead of suffering through it,” she says. “We’re helping people find their power because everyone deserves a safe place.” For more information, visit prevailinc.com. Prevail is located at 1100 South 9th Street, Suite 100, Noblesville or give them a call at 317-773-6942.

Eggleston plans to study zoology in college. “Ever since I can remember, my favorite thing has always been animals, particularly of the mammal species, but still animals in general,” Eggleston says. “My dream job has always been something to do with animals, whether that was a veterinarian or a zoo keeper, I did not really know, but I knew it had to be with animals. “Once I started trying to narrow down my dream job, I knew I did not want to be a veterinarian, but that is about all I could figure out. I hope one day I can figure out what career I want, but for now, I know it must be working with animals.” Eggleston noted that Westfield has some of the best teachers. “Almost every single teacher I have had since first grade I have really liked. With Westfield teachers you can tell they want every single one of their students to succeed, and they try to make that happen. I have had so many teachers inspire me, and make me want to be a better person and student.” Eggleston has a favorite teacher. “One teacher that will forever have a place in my heart and will forever be my absolute
favorite teacher, is Erin McKinney, a math teacher at Westfield High School. Not only was she an amazing teacher, and helped me find a new passion in math, but she also was, and still is, an amazing friend and mentor,” Eggleston says. “Mrs. McKinney has helped me through some of the hardest times in my life,” she adds. “To this day, I try and see her at least once a week just to say hello or have a conversation. It is not only Mrs. McKinney at Westfield, but there are so many teachers like her. I know so many students that have a relationship similar to mine with a teacher and those relationships will stick with the students for the rest of their lives.” Eggleston says Student Impact of Westfield has also helped her tremendously. “I attend Student Impact every Monday and Friday and volunteer as an intern/ student leader every Tuesday and Thursday,” Eggleston says. “I love everything about this organization. I love the people who run it and attend it, what they stand for, what they do for Westfield, and everything in between. Eggleston is proud to say she have been a
part of Student Impact since the fifth grade and will be a member until the moment she graduates high school. “I started volunteering at student impact my sophomore year, but it wasn’t until my junior year that I was volunteering on a constant basis. As of right now, I volunteer nine or more hours a week, and love every minute.” Eggleston also says she loves living in Westfield. “I have always felt safe and secure while being in Westfield,” she says. “I love the amenities and opportunities available. I love that Westfield has fun things to do with friends, and also fun things to do with family.” She believes Student Impact is a big part of that. Danyele Easterhaus, executive director of Student Impact of Westfield, says says she is thrilled Eggleston has been recognized. “Shea is just an amazing young woman,” Easterhaus says. “She leads with a quiet, yet strong sense about her, despite all the issues she faces each and every day. She puts others first and displays leadership not in
an aggressive manner, but in the normal, everyday ways of life. For more information on Student Impact of Westfield visit therockwestfield.org/ or call 317-414-6456.
