Why does June always seem like the best time of year? For me, it’s probably because that’s when grade school would let out for the summer (10+ years ago), and the possibilities of what the forthcoming months could bring seemed endless. Swimming pools, ice cream and summer trips. As an adult, residual feelings of what June has to bring seem to linger, and the possibilities haven’t changed. I still want to swim, eat ice cream, and take a summer vacation! VAGRANT’s summer issue captures the essence of youth and more importantly, touches on ways to preserve it. This month you will find an interview with the owner of Dtox, a juice bar in midtown, that goes in depth on the importance of juicing and cleanses. We also get to hear from our favorite beauty expert, Khalua Croft, on the importance of facial masks in this increasingly warm climate. And to top it all off, be sure to check out our cover editorial that features the designs of a rising local designer, Sharufa Walker, and her womenswear line, Jinaki. hen it comes to summer heat in Atlanta, the dog days are just beginning. Smoothie establishments are a dime a dozen and incredibly enticing on a warm day, but it’s not very often that you find places that specialize in juices. Dtox is an organic juice bar located in Midtown Atlanta that has been open since November 2011. After having recently watched the documentary “Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead” on Hulu (and learning that you don’t have to be fat, sick, or nearly dying to benefit from juicing), hearing about Dtox immediately sparked my curiosity. I got a chance to chat up the owner, Shannon Sliger to find out how Dtox got started, and what it’s all about. What is Dtox? Dtox is an organic juice bar focusing on 3-21 day cleanses. We are located in Midtown Atlanta with a new location opening in Buckhead in June. What made you want to open a juice bar? I am a yoga instructor, so health and wellness are important to me obviously. I have over the years dissected my own diet and rid myself of allergies, migraines and anxiety by simply removing certain foods from my diet. Food can make you sick. Food can heal you. I want to share what I’ve learned and educate people about food. Just because something’s edible doesn’t mean you should 10


eat it. My dad died tragically in a rehab facility in 2009 as he detoxed from prescription pills for you name it. That has been a big factor in my wanting to educate people about what they eat and how it makes them feel. Do a cleanse, then do an elimination diet to figure it all out. Don’t head to the doctor for a pill first. It’s a vicious cycle that can hardly be broken. One pill causes something else that makes another necessary and before you know it, the pills you take actually cause the symptoms they are supposed to alleviate. Terrible. When all along, it was probably something you were eating that was making you have headaches, feel sluggish, gain weight, get depressed, anxious and panicked. What makes Dtox different from other local juice, or even smoothie bars? We are all organic. When juice cleansing, toxins are being

pulled from the cells and tissues for elimination. If your juices are full of pesticides and toxins, it’s counter intuitive. Our juices are also raw, unpasteurized, leaving the nutrient content intact. Our cleanses flood your system with every vitamin, protein and mineral you can think of. It isn’t restrictive or damaging. How did you come up with your base menu? I came up with the base menu, red, green and milk after researching cleanses and ingredients that facilitate the detoxification process. Our green and red have 8 different vegetables each. A strange one for some, dandelion is a great liver and lymph cleanser. The use of ginger and lemon, beyond their medicinal benefits, also increases the juice shelf life as they are natural preservatives. We’ve worked with ingredients and adjusted amounts to find something that also tastes good.

Some of the ingredients in your juices look... intimidating. What is your advice for people newbies who are interested in juicing & it’s many great benefits, but may not have the most advanced palate yet? If you find the ingredients intimidating, my suggestion is just do it. Best ad campaign of all time. Just try it. Newbies all do the same thing when sampling. Grimace, sip, soften and say “It’s not bad. It’s actually good.” That’s what everyone says. And I’ve done a lot of demos. You all do more than just juices right? Can you elaborate on some of the other things on the menu?` Our aloe elixir with the wheatgrass elixir keep you looking youthful and radiant. designer proFIle: Sharufa Walker is one of those rare gems who can actually say that she is a true Atlanta native. This uber-talented designer, who’s designs are featured in our cover editorial, gave us a one-on-one about her line Jinaki, what influenced her current collection, and what we can expect from her in the future. What made you want to become a designer? Designing has been in my blood from birth! Growing up my mother sewed many of my clothes and she actually used to aspire to become a designer herself. Creativity and artistry flows through me! I have always had a love for fashion, but it wasn’t until I started to create my owns designs that I knew I wanted to be a full time designer! Where did you learn and how have you developed your craft? I lived in Nice, France for a while and there I was able to find inspiration to start designing my own clothes. I attended classes to help me with my sewing skills and I began to develop niche for my design aesthetic.

What does Jinaki mean? It means self-confident in Kiswahili.


Tell us about this current collection. Color, color, color!! This collection is all about taking vibrant textiles indigenous to various countries in Africa and interpreting them for the modern woman with a vintage flair! What’s next for Jinaki? Masked Maven

While most people are aware of how valuable it is to cleanse and exfoliate your skin regularly, another important problemsolving step in your skin care regime should be a weekly facial mask. A facial mask is usually used at night (i.e., right before bedtime), once or twice a week. Facial masks can draw out excess oil, improve radiance and hydrate, or exfoliate your skin. Masks are great for enhancing skin, so all skin types can gain some benefit from the right mask. The blend of ingredients in each mask is designed to target a specific skin care need, and the retail brands of masks available vary widely in their compositions. There are so many masks to choose from that it is essential for you to recognize your skin type, and buy accordingly. One must be sure to know what skin care issue is being targeted by the ingredients of the mask your using. For example: • Oily/Acne-prone skin does better with a clay mask. Clay draws excess oil from pores, extracts comedones (i.e., blackheads), and detoxifies the skin. My skin tends to get a little oily, and my fave clay mask is Aveda Deep Cleaning Herbal Clay Masque ($20). It leaves your skin clarified, conditioned and refined. 34


• Dry/Dehydrated skin needs a mask that works entirely differently than one for oily skin, since dry skin requires the mask to put more moisture into the skin. A great option for a hydrating mask is Aveda Intensive Hydrating Masque ($20). It cools and rehydrates with a surge of moisturizing aloe, kelp and lavender. • Sensitive skin needs a soothing gel mask with fragrance of verbena and chamomile. These help sooth and calm delicate, red and dry skin. Matis Reponse Delicate Face Care Mask ($50) is just the mask for even the most sensitive skin. If your skin has a combination of problems, such as being both sensitive and acne-prone, then Lush Catastrophe Cosmetics ($10) is for you. It deep cleans but is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

A good mask for hyperpigmentation is Decleor Aroma White Brightening Purifying Mask ($50). It is the perfect skincare product for revealing a lighter, more even complexion and purified, deep-cleansed skin within minutes. Since some masks can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you should always make sure to apply sunscreen during the daytime. Remember that when applying a mask, to always follow the directions. A mask can damage your skin if not used properly, so don’t over do it: using it more frequently will not yield better results, a dime size amount means a dime size amount, and 15 to 20 minutes is not overnight. Summer weather can be very strenuous on all skin types, and a good mask is just the thing that can put your skin on the path to balance.
