Retail Design

****MUST COMPLY WITH ALL UP-TO-DATE ADA REQUIREMENTS**** High ceilings -minimum 14’……26’ ceilings very common and often used -Low ceilings create closed uninviting spaces -Customers psychologically like “exploring” open spaces that could be comparable to nature/outdoors No sharp edge…. people tend to avoid sharp corners and edges. -Psychologically these pose threats and will deter shoppers from going near them -Try to create soft, rounded curves and shapes throughout the space. This will make shoppers feel confortable and create better flow throughout the space Use natural building materials when possible -shoppers feel more confortable when surrounded by woods and naturally materials. -When shoppers feel more connected to nature and the outdoors they feel more confortable and will continue to shop for greater periods of time -if plastic/manufactured materials are made to look like wood correctly, they can have the same affects on shoppers for less cost

Create a “shoppers landing strip” -Shoppers need a transition zone from indoors to outdoors that slows Down their pace and allows them to become more focused on shopping

Dressing Rooms

For smaller spaces create a “power display” -A power display is a large, horizon- tall display that acts as a barrier. -The barrier is intended to slow customers down sooner and speed up the transition from being outside to being inside the store. -Slows customers down sooner gives the customer time to absorb the layout of the store and decide where to go.

Retailers need to devote enough, time, money, or space on their dress- ing rooms. Dressing rooms are the location where most apparel buying decisions are made.

Dressingrooms are a huge selling tool.

Dressing rooms need lighting that is flattering, wall hooks and hangers for customers’ clothes, and furnishings that entice their use. The mirrors should be large and first rate—“they should look like the frame for a flattering portrait” (p.172). Dressing rooms must be clearly marked so that they are easy to find. The longer the customer has to look for a dressing room, the more likely they will leave without making a purchase. Displays: Organizing shelves………place shelves on an angle different from the traditional 90 degree isles in order to optimize visual of displays Display Windows should begin at 3’ above street level --60% of horizontal wall space should be dedicated to windows
