The humming bird aviary provides many academy opportunities for students, researchers, and professors. So, the strategy of space arrangement is clearly separating two different functions, education and research. However, a simple floor planning will make people who using this aviary understand where he/she is directly. So between the yellow area (education: basement and first floor) and blue area (research: first floor and second floor) is a void, which can let people from two different floors communicate any time. Above the third floor, fourth floor is a bigger open space where is covering by a translucent roof. The floor height is 48ft, so people could look out our main campus. Otherwise, there is a long viewing deck on the fourth floor. People can watch the humming birds' living environment by climbing the outdoor stairs without entering to the main building. Description: There are two main purposes in this project, Texas A&M University Humming bird research center. 1. Creating a landmark building in our Campus. The feature of Humming bird aviary is that humming bird needs a very high and tall space for flying and courtship. The height of vertical space needs 90 feet at least. In this design project, creating a tall and huge mass is an inevitable task. The ''Tower'' space could be a new symbol in College Station, even Bryan because when you walk on the University Drive or drive from Texas Avenue, you may see this tall "tower" building nearby.

So the building shape is combined by two different types of architectural language. One is solid concrete structure, and the other is look-like light envelope system covering all the structures and space.

2. Increasing human, students, and children activities in this area. Our site is close to school apartment, "the gardens" and future residential house for students. Also, there is a bus stop, 40 ft far from our location. No matter local neighbors or visitors, who are driving or walking, they can easily reach the humming bird's center. Specially, for kids from elementary schools, the building is not only an educational place but also an open public space.
