Partnership Falmouth Key to Falmouth’s growing success is a series of partnerships in place to ensure operations within the town are smoothly run and constantly evolving. All striving and working closely together to make Falmouth a better place for both its residents and visitors, the dynamic partnership scheme comprises of a number of networks whose sole aim is to support the local economy, people and culture, helping them to continually flourish. The Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) is a not-for-profit company responsible for delivering a number of innovative projects that aim to improve the trading environment of Falmouth. It is business-led - with over 400 businesses involved, who constantly deliver initiatives such as destination marketing, new events and festivals, PR campaigns, public realm improvements and business training programmes. Established in 1866, The Port of Falmouth Chamber of Commerce is a group of local business people from a range of sectors whose aim is to promote the port and town for the benefit of the members and wider community. The Falmouth Town Forum is an ideas and consultation group whose purpose is to assist the Town Council and other agencies in developing Falmouth for the benefit of its residents, students and businesses. The apolitical Forum unites representatives of a variety of groups and organisations in the town from the commercial, charitable and statutory sectors. Recent work includes the long-term development of Falmouth, the Falmouth and Penryn Community Plan, greater waterside access,traffic management, tourism development, the Business Improvement District and youth issues. Formed in 1974, Falmouth Town Council currently comprises sixteen elected Councillors to help undertake a variety of local services from planning and highways to shopmobility, parks and gardens, Community Grant Awards and Christmas lighting. Involved in a mass of projects, see page 98 for more info. Fal River Cornwall is a destination marketing partnership with over 100 members, it promotes the Fal River as Cornwall’s most popular visitor destination with Falmouth and its ferry hub at the heart of the area. to give ‘hands on’ leadership to help make Falmouth a cleaner, safer, more prosperous and happier town. Working closely with local partners to ensure the town has a vibrant and sustainable economy. Alongside the usual town management functions of business and resident support and communication it leads many of the key events in the Falmouth calendar such as, Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival and the Christmas Events, as well as supporting one off’ independent festivals and leading the way with planning for events of significant importance, such as the Olympic Torch relay event through Falmouth in 2012. Spirit of the Sea Falmouth is synonymous with the sea. A centre of enterprise and communication, its historical roots are bound to its magnificent harbour and maritime culture. More than a mere fishing port, Falmouth boasts the third largest natural deepwater harbour in the world. It is flanked by Pendennis & St Mawes Castles, King Henry VIII’ s impenetrable forts built to protect the harbour from French and Spanish fleets. With a history of traders from Greece, Rome and Gaul visiting over 2,000 years ago, Falmouth has continued to capitalise on its trading town status throughout every historical age. Charles II’s royal charter in 1661 made Falmouth an official town, while in 1688 - with Sir Water Raleigh’s vision combined with the sponsorship of the Killigrew family - Falmouth’s port was born. It became the Royal Mail’s Packet Station where Custom House Quay dispatched dozens of packet ships, rapidly expanding its destinations to include the West Indies and North and South America which, in

turn, surpassed London’s shipping activity in tonnage terms. Diversifying its workforce and expertise across all sectors - from boat building to fishing - the inception of the Falmouth Docks and railway dramatically increased the town’s burgeoning prosperity and reputation. With transport came tourism, as visitors began to admire the area’s distinct and diverse offerings and spectacular scenery. Today, modern developments see Falmouth as a University town with a vibrant student population, a commercial port and industrial entity, popular holiday destination and internationally renowned cultural and artistic centre. A place of poise, Falmouth’s relationship with the ocean and its people continues to strike a balance between industrial innovation and the surrounding natural environment. Relax and enjoy Falmouth’s world-class beaches and experience the pull of the ocean. With beachside dining, picnics on the sands, activities on and in the water, Falmouth has it all.

Walking in and around Falmouth allows you to follow some beautiful paths and breathtaking trails as well as unrivalled access to some incredible places.

Gyllyngvase Beach proudly boasts Blue Flag status, which means that clean, lifeguard-patrolled waters can be found alongside an array of facilities such as cafés and toilets, with watersports hire further adding to the allure of Falmouth’s most popular beach. Castle Beach makes an ideal spot for snorkelling and rock pooling, providing a quiet and sheltered stretch of sand that also features a café. Tunnel Beach is sheltered by a high sea wall and provides a safe yet rocky stretch of sand that connects to Castle Beach on a low tide. Swanpool Beach includes a café, crazy golf and children’s play area, watersports centre and kayak hire - ideal for families and those seeking something more energetic. Maenporth Beach is flat and safe, providing seasonal lifeguards and a café. It is also home to award-winning restaurant, The Cove. To discover more of the area’s breathtaking beaches and unspoilt sands, hop on to the St Mawes Ferry over to the Roseland Peninsula and on to St Anthony Head. Gyllyngvase Beach

If you’re short on time a walk around Pendennis Headland is perfect. The easy route takes in the scenic sights of Falmouth Docks and Pendennis Castle. This 2.5-mile walk starts at Custom House Quay before winding past the docks toward Pendennis Point, with stunning views along the way. Coastal walks are a great way to blow away the cobwebs and take in some refreshing sea air. Take your pick from the local coastal footpaths or for a real treat venture further afield and explore the many miles of river and coastal trails around the Roseland, St Mawes, Trelissick, Helford and Fal River, where you’ll find paths and places to suit every ability. One to try is the world famous South West Coast Path which runs across the entrance to the Fal River and is enjoyed by thousands of walkers every year. The path follows a cliffpath route and enjoys some stunning views accross the bay, river and surrounding coastlines. Home to a stunning array of parks and gardens, Falmouth’s prime south coast position perfectly supports a variety of sub-tropical plant species. Warmed by the Gulf Stream and enjoying a mild maritime climate, its award-winning gardens combine artistically landscaped sites with natural open spaces for an inspiring experience.

Trebah is renowned for its colourful display of tropical blooms that spill down towards their private beach on the Helford River: glorious gardens that are a definite must-see. Gyllyngdune Gardens were formerly part of the Gyllyngdune Manor and feature a period Victorian bandstand encircled by hanging baskets, flower towers, beautiful bedding plants and grotto walkway.

Our Mission: to educate the general public on the various challenges facing our marine environment both now and in the future.

We are your window to the wonders of the ocean. The Falmouth Aquarium is a new three storey facility in the heart of Falmouth. Visitors enter the realm of coral reefs, where we put people eye-to-eye with a host of creatures including seahorses, eels and frogfish. Come and meet the star of Finding Nemo in his natural environment in our clownfish and anemone tank! Marine life closer to home is the highlight of the aquarium’s first floor exhibits. Here, visitors can explore Cornish habitats including under the pier, the rocky shore and the Helford River. Our second floor is dedicated to educating the public on a range of issues facing our oceans and the wildlife that inhabit them. Come and learn about work being undertaken in Cornwall to monitor the mighty but peaceful basking shark, or learn about the future of our fisheries if unsustainable fishing practices continue to prevail. Treasure Trails Three great fun ways to explore the river, the trails take from two hours to a full day. Solve the clues, follow the Trail and find the pirate treasure. Roseland Ranger This is the shortest Trail and is split into two parts, one explores St Mawes and the other St Anthony Head, both on the beautiful Roseland Peninsula. Both parts can be completed individually or together. Catch a ferry to St Mawes to start the Trail from Falmouth, Trelissick, Truro or Tolverne. In St Mawes you can complete part one before taking the Place Ferry to St Anthony Head to complete part two. Both trails involve a walk, 1 mile for part one and 4.5 miles for part two. Smugglers Trail This medium length Trail has it all and takes you around the steep sided Fal River. Along wooded trails, across ferries and to Smugglers Cottage with its secret treasure chest. Ideally started from Falmouth, Truro or St Mawes. Catch the ferry to Trelissick where you start the Trail. Our most popular Trail, located in a very beautiful part of the river with loads of great interactive clues.

Pendennis Castle - English Heritage

Cornwall’s Greatest Fortress For a great day out, take a trip to Pendennis Castle, one of the finest of the fortresses built by Henry VIII.

The new blockbuster Search & Rescue exhibition invites you to enter the world of the maritime rescue services where ordinary people lead extraordinary lives, risking their lives to save yours. Experience the drama of a rescue, climb aboard a Sea King helicopter, meet the crews, explore a lifeboat, hit the ‘beach’ on a quad bike, revisit rescues from the past and discover what it takes to bring you home safely when the worst happens at sea and around our coast.

Descend to the underground magazines during an air raid on a guided tour, whilst in the Battery Observation Post experience what happens as the alert sounds warning of an impending enemy attack. Besides this there is the 16th Century keep to explore with its lofty battlements and mighty Tudor gun-deck . National Maritime Museum Cornwall Celebrating the sea, boats and Cornwall, this multi award winning Museum not only has 15 galleries, over five floors beautifully illustrating the past, present and future of this island nation but also offers a number of stunning exhibitions.

The castle has since seen action in many conflicts. A Discovery Centre with hands-on activities allows visitors of all ages to really get to grips with history. Explore the restored Victorian and WWII defences complete with sounds and smells! The everyday life of the garrison at Pendennis is brought to life in the War Shelter and the 20th century Barracks has an interactive exhibition for children and families to get hands-on with the story of the castle.

Trebah Garden Sub-tropical ravine garden on the Helford River

St Mawes Ferry

Trebah is a garden of international renown and one of the region’s most highly regarded tourist attractions. It is an inclusive garden genuinely family and dog-friendly with a dramatic coastal setting on the Helford Estuary (one of Cornwall’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The St Mawes Ferry connects the charming fishing village of St Mawes with the bustling port of Falmouth. The ferry provides an all year round service to over 162,000 visitors a year and is an absolute must for anyone visiting Cornwall. Passing the impressive castles of St Mawes & Pendennis, the ferry route takes you on a magical journey across the Carrick Roads. As well as the castles you will see many large ships, the working docks of Falmouth, Black Rock (a local isolated shipping hazard) and, if you’re lucky, some of the dolphins and basking sharks that regularly visit the harbour.
