What was that? What happened, friends? What did you see as the Book of Wisdom unleashed the unfathomable depths of its knowledge upon you? What events unfolded yesterday, as you forayed into the history of Tomorrow again? You met your peers, you danced; you fluttered from stage to stage, you smiled; you went bumbling into the night, tracing the tales of the Book with your steps. Along the way, you called stories into existence. Before long, there’ll be a million of them, millions even, keeping track of every interaction, every meeting, every friend made over this weekend. They’ll all be kept in the
library known to you as the Mainstage. Don’t be dizzied by the magnitude of this Wisdom, though; instead, contribute. Take your last day in these lands of letters as an opportunity to trump everything that was revealed to you, and make sure that this year’s collected story is the greatest yet. Roam the grounds from end to end, pause to enjoy a culinary treat, touch one another, take your partner by the hand and show them a place they’ve never seen before. By your collective effort, all of you will be as one, friends, and write a legend the likes of which the world has never seen.

A VOICE FROM THE PAST
’m sure I heard it right. Where did that come from? A fleeting sound, crowds cheering for something spectacular; an age-old, appealing chorus. There it is again – hard to pinpoint, but I believe it’s coming from above. Luckily, we keep a ladder handy to reach the upper shelves. As I climb the rungs past row upon row of ancient, amply decorated tomes, I am reminded of my childhood. I used to visit the circus then, and the crowd would roar at the performers just like this. The sound grows louder as I reach
the top, and I know I’m in the right place. Instinctively, my hand is guided towards a thick and heavy codex. The voice… I hear a distant voice now. Is there someone behind me? As I look away, I see no one. Yet I can feel a breath – not a hard breath, but more of a quiet exhalation. It’s as if this presence is elated for me to be drawn to the book. Instead of frightening me, it gives me a certain kind of calmness. But what am I getting myself into? I wipe away the dust from the cover, and the voice suddenly explodes into a thunderous roar. “Go on, friend!” it bellows. “Let me introduce you to the Amicorum Spectaculum!” Having regained my grip on the ladder, I start to turn the pages, and my eyes fall upon a statuesque
painting of an acrobat. He starts to climb up on a trapeze. Am I dreaming that this portrait is moving? “Welcome,” the voice once again booms, “to the greatest show on Earth. When we unite, the whole world comes down to watch!” Suddenly, my mind overflows with memories: I remember now! The roaming band of entertainers, the best performers in the world, come together for a once-in-a-lifetime extravaganza honouring Tomorrow… If there ever was a story about the awesome power of togetherness and unity, this was it. May the Amicorum Spectaculum live on forever!

NEVER A DULL MOMENT AT
DREAMVILLE Good morning, amigos! As the sky starts to lighten up on this dreary morning, we sneak onto the campsite to look for those innocent but inspiring morning rituals. The sun is slowly climbing the heavens, the music starts playing and the people of DreamVille start showing their most natural side. It’s like bird-spotting in a lively forest at dawn: no filters, no preparations, just the real faces of the People of Tomorrow. Some are already waiting for the Recovery Area to open (totally understandable – have you seen those instructors?), while others cannot wait for a big old cappuccino and fancy toast at the Farmhouse, preferring to kick this day off the lazier way. Not such a bad idea, perhaps, after the amount of partying you might have done the night before. Once again, this surely wasn’t a dull morning at DreamVille.
Mira (23), Fanny and Maria (both 22) from Finland are just done doing their groceries. “We like to start our day with a fresh breakfast, so we got fruits and some plant-based yoghurts,” Mira says.
These true Jedis named Ali (29) and Michel (30), from the Netherlands, started their day with a baguette duel. Well, what can we say – a man is only as powerful as his imagination, and always be the person Obi-Wan Kenobi wants you to be!
Catarina (20) from Norway likes to “get up, wake up and make up.” Fortunately, the people at the make-up stand on the Marketplace has you covered, girl!

COME TO
MY CASA Not far from the Montagoe chill-out area, we find five friends from Denmark relaxing at full throttle. Mads, Thomas, Kasper, Steffan and Jacob are slowly starting their day, grabbing a couple of chairs to wake up on their porch. “We sleep spread out over two DreamLodge tents. But when we wake up, we like to hang out together. And because of the accomodation we chose, it’s possible to do right here on our porch.” The friends indeed find themselves in a spacious, luxurious tent with a cozy bed, and a personal terrace with comfortable chairs and a table. Squad member Thomas likes to take the ‘blame’ for putting his friends here. “Everything you need to enjoy your weekend is included. We have our own locker, USB outlets, lighting, storage space… In this way, we can enjoy Tomorrowland even more. Partying to music from artists like Brennan Heart and Partyraiser, you do need a lot of energy.”
RESPECT YOUR HOME These green fields you’ve been able to reside on over the course of the weekend are home to a wide range of animals during the rest of the year, and the faster and smoother we can restore their habitat, the better. After all, it’s their world as much as it is ours; it is up to us to respect one another and respect nature, so don’t forget to leave your camping spot just as fresh and clean as you found it when you arrived. Please sort your waste properly by using the Recycling Kits that have been handed out. Let’s go green, together.
TENTS Taking your tent home when you leave DreamVille helps the environment as well as your wallet, so we highly recommend it. If there is a reason you really can’t take it home, please pack it up and hand it in at the collection point at your District House, and it will be made available for other people to reuse.
RUBBISH / TRASH Full rubbish bags can be left at the dedicated Recycle Points. Full and properly sorted PMD bags can be handed to the Recycle Teams, so the material will not end up at a landfill site but will used again.
7
GAS TANKS Please take gas tanks you used for cooking home if you can. If that’s no option (you can’t take them on a flight), then drop them off at a District House. Do not throw them in the regular rubbish – they can cause explosions at the recycling centre!

TOMORROW’S
BUBBLY BEVERAGES
GENERATION
Every once in a while, you should allow yourself to take a step back from the Madness and treat yourself to an ice-cold serving of bubbles. In front of the road to DreamVille, Vallformosa Cava host their Fountain Bar. Here is where you have the opportunity to relax, sipping on a glass of their sparkling liquid gold. The lovely hostesses smile as they top off your drink with fresh raspberries, just to go the extra mile. The bar has a floral vibe to it, with colourful plants and slight touches of pink. At the counter, we find a beautiful young lady leisurely enjoying a cava. “I chose this drink because it’s light and bubbly; perfect for a day out on the fields,” says Aichner Karin, who is from Italy. “I’m also going to be very honest now,” she giggles. “I am kind of a fitness fanatic, and a good cava has half the calories of a glass of beer. Therefore, it’s always an appropriate time for a sparkle. Oh, and it looks good on social media – not unimportant, either.”
INTO THE WOODS
Have you noticed the two new inhabitants of De Schorre hanging out on the slope of the hill beside the Mainstage? The pair is part of a bigger art concept introduced by Tomorrowland as a thank-you to the park, De Schorre, and the neighbours. No less than nine trolls were built, but only this couple is visible during Tomorrowland. The rest of the family are having their Summer sleep in the woods behind the scenes. The trolls were designed and built by Danish artist Thomas Dambo and his team, mere weeks before the festival started. They’re made of recycled wood and trash, elements that are always key to Dambo’s art. If you ever get the chance to visit De Schorre during the year, make sure to go on an adventure in the woods and discover the story of the Trolls and the Little People – a modern fairytale about creating consciousness in handling our trash.
LIKE A FAMILY
Ever heard the saying ‘It’s the crew life, you wouldn’t understand?’ Well, perhaps we can change that and help you, in fact, understand. And who could be a better help than an actual bartender from bar 48, right in front of the Mainstage? Meet Lindsay, who is just starting her shift. “I started my day at 1 p.m.,” she says. “That sounds pretty late for a kick-off, but we keep going until 2 in the morning. I’m very happy to work in front of the Mainstage again, I appreciate the view and I just love the vibe. Everybody’s really thankful for the work the crew does, and no one minds if they have to wait for a bit when it’s very busy.” Serving a fresh beer to a guest, her colleague Sofie agrees: “It sounds like a cliché, but it feels like one big family here.” Backstage, in the pantry, we meet Bram. “I found this spot through NOWJOBS, and when they told me I had the opportunity of being a bartender here, I didn’t have to think twice. Besides the fun work, it’s also a chance to practice your languages and interact with different cultures.”
CHOOSE TO REUSE
The Recycle Club is one of the branches of the Love Tomorrow program, wherein the People of Tomorrow are encouraged to become more conscious about how we’re treating the mighty beautiful Earth we all live on. At their Recycle Clubhouse, there is a 3D printer that uses recycled materials to make actual furniture, and enthusiastic crewmembers will tell you all here is to know about Tomorrowland’s place on Earth. You can actually watch live recycling in process if you take a sneak peek through the windows, and there’s a swing in front of the Clubhouse with an Instagram wall. You can pick up new Recycle Kits to keep your own camping spot nice and tidy, too. If we all work together we can keep DreamVille, and thus nature, clean and green and keep coming back here for many years to come. Isn’t that just the way we like it? 9
Ever seen a school on wheels? Chances are you’ll encounter one today, as the Mobile School will be rolling around DreamVille and the Holy Grounds. With the motto of education being the key to unlocking the world, the organization behind it – supported by the Tomorrowland Foundation – has the main aim to give these children a passport to freedom. “Thanks to the support of the People of Tomorrow, we can construct five new Mobile Schools in Haiti, Kenya, Poland, Togo and Lithuania. That’s why we are here, to promote what we are doing, raise awareness and get people to support this project,” crew member Bruce says. “I’m happy to see that a lot of people are donating Pearls to our foundation and buying Tomorrowland flags, because for every flag sold, 5 euros go to the Foundation.” His colleague Ophélie agrees: “Education is the investment our generation makes in the future, that’s why it’s so important for us.” Interested in more info about the Mobile School? You can find the team at the One World Bridge from 13h00 to 18h00 on Sunday.

GANACCI Some people are born for stardom. Salvatore Ganacci is not one of them. Salvatore Ganacci had to work hard in order to become the superstar he is today. It took blood, sweat, tears and tracksuits to get here. Ever since Tomorrowland 2018, however, he’s arguably one of the biggest and most-watched artists out there. With an outrageous performance that went well and truly viral and has been streamed millions of times, he claimed his seat in the pantheon of dance music history right next to Tomorrowland’s other Mainstage regulars. He’s the Freddie Mercury of electronic music, effortlessly combining showmanship with musicianship as if it were second nature. Anxious to wrestle the secret of his creativity from his usually tightly sealed lips - the maestro never explains his jokes - we invited him to explain a series of images from the Ganacci universe. Join us, then, as we dive deep into the wonderful mind of the great Salvatore Ganacci.

Rorschach test “It’s a horse. It’s obviously an American Stallion and you can clearly see that it has been eating something funny. It could also be a moth, though. Like, from the Richard Gere movie ‘Mothman’. But that’s not for me to decide. It can be whatever it wants to be.”
Tomorrowland 2019 “I’m going to be serious now: Tomorrowland is the greatest festival in the world and it just keeps getting better. But I also notice my animals on the photo. I would love to do a set for strictly animals. Maybe they would be scared, but it would be cool. They don’t even need to dance, they just need to be there.”
Tomorrowland Today “I intended to read the Tomorrowland Today newspaper during my set, but ended up only looking at my picture. It was a good picture. In fact, it was by far the best one of them all.”
Silly walks “This is genius. There’s nothing else but Monthy Python, is there? It’s smart humour, but stupid.”
Chicken or egg “Someone had to have sex first in order for it to be a chicken. Richard Gere had sex with a chicken and then the egg came out.”
Happy and smiling face “Sometimes you’re happy, sometimes you’re sad. The game rules, but if you can’t take it, then quit playing the game.”
Horse “Richard Gere. Or better: Keanu Reaves, with a sore jaw.”
Water fowl “I like swimming. Where we come from, when you’re one year old they throw you in the water and you have to learn to swim by yourself. At that age you’re still wearing speedos, and you grow into swimming shorts later. If I could choose I would wear speedos all year, but nowadays when you wear one people are like: ‘are you from the eighties or something?’” 11
Shoe “That’s a fake Gucci, I can see that immediately. I would prefer that type of shoe over my Nikes any day of the week. Not these, though, I want real Guccis. You see, the more pointy they are the more masculine you are. So when you get more money and fans, your point gets bigger.”

A TASTE OF BELGIAN HISTORY Leffe Blond 7,0% ABV Style: Belgian Blond
Pauwel Kwak 8,4% ABV Style: Belgian Pale Ale
Leffe Blond is a pale traditional Belgian abbey beer with a sunny golden colour. It has a smooth and full-bodied taste and a rich, creamy head. This is the perfect introduction to the traditional Belgian beer styles.
Created by the Bosteels family brewery, this beer was originally crafted to keep coach drivers warm on their long journeys. That’s why it’s served in that odd glass in a wooden support: it would be held exactly that way on a horse-drawn carriage! Pauwel Kwak is the perfect exemplar of a Belgian Pale Ale.
Organic Beer A number of the beers on offer at the bar proudly call themselves organic. But what is that, exactly? To be recognised as ‘organic’, beer needs to have at least 95% of its ingredients organically produced, meaning no GMOs, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. This is an important step to take in a world that is increasingly at risk from mass agriculture and uncontrolled use of pesticides, and of course, makes the final product healthier for you.
What’s a day in paradise without a drink? If you want to quench your thirst in local style, the Belgian Beer Bar behind the Mainstage is where you go. The history of Belgian beer takes us back to the 12th century, the country being known for its complex, powerful and well-crafted styles of beer, which was traditionally produced at abbeys. Presently, from Trappist monks to giant corporations, the country has more than 200 active breweries, producing around 1600 different beers. At the Belgian Beer Bar, visitors can choose between nine varieties of beers served on draught and from bottles – complete with their own proper glasses – in an elevated beer garden with a view across the food court. Below are a few of the offerings, but if you’re unsure what to order, be sure to talk to the bar staff for one that suits your taste. They’ll be very happy to match the right patch of Belgian history to your particular palate!
Ginette Lager (on tap) 4,5% ABV Style: Lager
Tripel Karmeliet (on tap) 8,4% ABV Style: Tripel
Hoegaarden Rosé 3,0% ABV Style: Fruit Wheat Beer
The Ginette Organic Lager has a fantastic golden colour with a firm and fizzy white head. Lovely aromas of biscuits and lemon zest and a very well-balanced contrast between sweetness and hoppy bitterness make this beer a perfect starter for a hot day.
Tripel Karmeliet is a classic example of a Belgian tripel-style beer, made with 3 types of grains: wheat, oats and barley. This complex beer has aromas of vanilla mixed with citrus. The high alcohol content creates a perfect harmony with the sweetness of the fermented grains.
The tradition of mixing fruits in beer is part of Belgian history. The elegant Hoegaarden Rosé adds raspberry to the classic wheat beer recipe, creating a sweet pink-coloured beer that will delight everyone who loves red fruits.

G ROWI NG U P WITH TOMOR ROW LAND
Fifteen years of Tomorrowland, what a milestone it is. From a festival with a predominantly Belgian, Dutch, French and German crowd, it developed into a truly global event and has now become the most incredible and international electronic music experience in the world. How did Tomorrowland and its musical heartbeat, EDM, become so popular? We spoke to the ‘grandfather’ of EDM, David Guetta, whose relationship to Tomorrowland goes way back, right to when it first started. His collaborative projects with pop and urban artists such as Kelly Rowland and The Black Eyed Peas were seen as bold and revolutionary when they first emerged around 2009, and they opened up the world of electronic music to a new crowd, unfamiliar yet with European rave culture. In effect, the travels of EDM into unknown geographical territories turned out to be one of the core mechanisms behind the People of Tomorrow growing from a local to a truly global tribe – and Guetta was one of the main forces behind this worldwide explosion in popularity.
“I hope to be the one to lead the next revolution in dance music.” A little over ten years ago, dance music, including house, rave and techno, was seen as the opposite of urban music,” says Guetta, speaking just before he will take his spot in the booth at the Mainstage. “In the US, where the market for urban music was big, the amazing underground raves that happened didn’t receive any support from music media, let alone more mainstream outlets. Playing house on the radio just wasn’t something you’d do. That all changed – completely by coincidence – when Kelly Rowland was out dancing in a club and heard a beat of mine played out by a DJ. She found out how to contact me and then suggested we record a song together. The result of our session was ‘When Love Takes Over’, which became a huge hit. The very same programmers at the radio stations, who wouldn’t think to playlist house earlier, decided to give it a go now. Unlike before, a big name they were familiar with was linked to a house beat. My approach to making house music was new back then, because whenever I used vocals there were real people singing original lyrics. It was something different from the sampled sections of obscure disco records that were used by producers around that time.” Guetta’s success was the work of a pioneer, but other artists started to work on creations in similar directions, in the sense that they dedicated themselves to producing house music accessible to a larger audience. Artists like Guetta’s friends Axwell, Ingrosso and Steve Angello – the Swedish House Mafia – and Calvin Harris 14

“The art is no longer to play records t h a t p e op l e don ’ t k n o w, b u t t o p l a y 1 0 0 % u n i qu e e di t s of t h i n g s t hey do k now. ” were the EDM virtuosos who, all of a sudden, became more visible and received a level of airplay they didn’t get before. A few years later, around 2012, Tomorrowland’s magical aftermovies started to gain more traction globally. More and more people discovered EDM and shortly afterwards, they would find out about Tomorrowland. It became very clear to an evergrowing tribe of electronic music fans that to enjoy their favourite sounds in a grandiose, unique way, the magical setting of Tomorrowland was where they needed to go. David Guetta prides himself on being one of the few artists with a Tomorrowland connection that dates to the very start of the festival. “I think I’m the only DJ who was present at every single edition, so I almost feel like it’s a family affair. We can be proud of each other. In the beginning, Tomorrowland was a small festival and I was a small DJ. Now we’re both big, and that gives us a special relationship. Out of all the memories I have of Tomorrowland, I think my very favourite is a quite a childish one. I really felt like a kid in a candy store when we started to ask the audience to move from the left to the right. That was just so much fun. I still like the idea that we’re kids in the bodies of adults.” With the process of EDM replacing house and techno as the most popular genre at major festivals including Tomorrowland, the trade of DJ’ing has changed a lot. “When Tomorrowland first started, the art of DJ’ing was
primarily about finding records nobody else would have. You’d have to get your hands on obscure American dance music and make sure nobody found out what you were playing. Now all of it is accessible, and the art is no longer to play records that people don’t know, but to play tracks they do know – you just have to make sure you have 100% unique edits of them. So I spend a lot of time in my studio editing tracks, rather than hours in the shops crate digging, hoping to find that one special record.” Dance music has known many revolutions including the arrival of house, jungle and dubstep, and also the dance/urban crossover format pioneered by Guetta. “The last revolution now happened a while ago,” Guetta sighs, “and we need a new one really bad. DJs who play stages the size of Tomorrowland’s Mainstage face the challenge of needing to sound fresh and new, so you can’t play too much EDM anymore. You can’t really play underground club music either, though, as it doesn’t have the same energy. But you know what, I hope to be the one to lead yet another revolution in dance music. I’m very excited about a few new tracks I have made in a new style, where I’ve injected rave music with a level of sexiness it didn’t have before. I have a bunch of tunes in that style and the one that’s out already is one I made with Morten, featuring Aloe Blacc on vocals, called ‘Never Be Alone’. I think it’s a revolutionary sound and I hope others will join the movement.”

Food, music and unity: the recipe of MESA is as simple as it is thought through. This is the one restaurant that captures the spirit of Tomorrowland in its purest form, as the kitchen and cocktails of MESA are inspired by Tastes of the World, bringing flavours from all over the globe together as one. Chefs Michiel de Bruyn and Laurens Sijssens have created a menu to match the People of Tomorrow’s own diversity and enthusiasm. With two seats and an hour of culinary ecstasy to spare, MESA allowed us a peek into their world, and had us make a bunch of new friends along the way.Â
18
TOMORROWLAND TODAY
The whole idea of MESA is to combine the key ingredients that form the backbone of Tomorrowland: good music, great food and drinks, and unity. As soon as we step onto the terrace in front of the restaurant, we are welcomed with a warm, big smile by the hosts. Immediately put at ease and feeling at home, we handle the practicalities of checking our name off the list – dining at MESA is only on reservation – and are handed our very first cocktail, based on ginger and vodka. The cocktails are designed and handcrafted by Atelier Paul Morel. A master mixologist, Morel is one of the most famous in the trade, having earned his stripes in restaurants like The Jane and Pure C. Nowadays, he is in charge of the cocktails and beverages at Tomorrowland’s very own MESA restaurant in Antwerp, from which the restaurant at the festival is obviously derived. With cocktail in hand, we’re invited by a host to come closer as he guides us towards a group of people we’ve never met. “Folks, welcome to MESA,” he starts his introduction. “What you are about to experience is Tomorrowland on a plate. And in our experience, food tastes even better when it’s being enjoyed with friends. Look around: these are your new friends.” We see a couple from Germany, a number of guys from Mexico, a group from Spain, a man from Bolivia and one from Austria. And then there’s the two of us, coming from Belgium and Holland. “You’ll be sharing a table,” the host continues. “There’s 18 of you and you’ll sit next to each other. What we do here at MESA is based on sharing. We’ll put big plates of food on the table that you will have to share with each other. We wouldn’t want to make things awkward, so we suggest you take the next five minutes to get to know each other before we direct you to your seats.” After a couple of nervous little smiles, the ice breaks and we dive in with a little round of ‘where are you from?’ and ‘is this your first time at Tomorrowland?’. It turns out

we’re all at Tomorrowland for similar reasons, and we all booked our table at MESA because we love good food, so forget awkwardness – this is fun! Just as promised, the host comes back to pick us up and guides us inside the restaurant, which is housed in a marvellous art nouveau-styled greenhouse brightly lit through ample glass. We’re seated at a huge wooden family table with 16 people we only met five minutes ago, and yet it feels natural to have ended up here together. The brief introductory conversations from outside are continued at the table on a more profound level. The first course is served quickly: sashimi, infused watermelon, mjadra and a taco al pastor. A barrage of explosive tastes, but we extinguish the fire of spices soon enough with a cocktail based on tequila and pineapple juice. The food and the drinks help loosen our tongues even more and the conversations shift towards our experiences of the last few days. What and where should we eat, other than MESA, what stage or scenery should we check out, and which artists mustn't we miss? Time flies by, and all of a sudden the main course comes up. A mighty fine piece of meat peeps out from a stone pot: a juicy côte a l’os accompanied by green asparagus, barbecued artichoke, bomba rice and compote with broad beans. If Heaven exists, then surely, we are taking part in it with this dinner. All too soon, the main course is finished, and our time here is almost at an end. But as a parting gift, MESA have cooked up the perfect moment of closure to this whole experience. The end was not in any way a bitter, but very sweet indeed: a little dark chocolate taco with caramel, milk chocolate mousse and peanuts on top. We bid goodbye, but not farewell, to our new friends – and to MESA, which is surely worth a return visit.
WHERE TO FIND MESA MESA’s Antwerp restaurant is opened year-round and located at Kloosterstraat 99, 2000 Antwerpen. Make your reservation through mesa.world.

TOMORROWLAND TODAY
THE AMBASSADOR OF CHINESE DJ CULTURE Electronic music and DJ culture are on the rise in China; so much so, that Tencent Video, a Chinese platform similar to YouTube, recently launched ‘Rave’, a DJ competition which became a huge hit among the country’s music-loving internet users. The show is basically a DJ version of American Idol where viewers vote for their favourite participating disc jockey. No less than 60 million viewers watched the first few episodes of Rave, while a staggering 100 million witnessed 39-year-old electronic/dub DJ/producer Jiang Liang, better known by his stage name Jiang Liang Soundsystem (JLS), win the final last February. The prize package included a performance at what may very well be the world’s most prestigious platform; Tomorrowland’s magical Mainstage. We caught Liang minutes after this performance, one of his first outside China. 20

“It was amazing to see so many Chinese fans in the audience, dancing and waving their flags,” says Jiang. “I wasn’t surprised to see there were many of them, as most people under 40 in China are interested in DJ culture, and some middle-aged people are too. What’s refreshing about playing here in Boom, though, is that people seem to understand my music better than back home. They know how to dance to it.” “Even though interest in DJing is on the rise in China, Tencent and Rave have played a massive role in making our trade more popular,” according to Jiang. Rave as a series aims to increase people’s knowledge of electronic music. “When people started watching the show I’d say they were probably mostly entry-level fans, while many who followed the whole series now have a much wider knowledge of the scene. I like to compare it with a tutorial, as Rave introduces people to all substyles of electronic music.” As is the case here at Tomorrowland, the overwhelming plethora of styles within the electronic music scene were all represented on Rave. “Most of my competitors on the show were younger than myself and played more popular styles of electronic music than I do, such as bass and EDM. I think the reason that I beat the others is that I blend various styles of music such as traditional Chinese songs with electronic reggae and dub, afrobeat and baile funk. I think it’s that variation, and also the fact that I play a lot of my own music, that people like about my performances,” says Jiang.

career behind the decks. But Jiang chose a slightly different path, going back and forth between periods of DJing a lot and periods of focusing mostly on the production of his own work. “I usually start DJing again after a long period of producing, as for me DJing is a vehicle to promote my own music; it’s something I do when I’ve got a lot of fresh material to present to my crowds. Besides DJing, I also play a lot of live shows, with actual live instrumentation. For every booking request that comes in, I make a separate decision as to whether I’ll DJ or perform a live show.” Months went by between the Rave finals and Jiang’s performance today at the Mainstage. “It was a very exciting day, playing to such a large crowd, and something that I’d been looking forward to for a while. I wasn’t nervous, as I’m used to playing to large audiences, although in my country festival capacity is always limited to a maximum of ten thousand people. I don’t think much will change for me personally after this. Everything I do in my life happens with one goal in mind: I want to be able to continue my career in music, and continue making new tracks is exactly what I’ll do when I get back from this trip.”
You’d say that a DJ capable of winning such a big competition would spend a lot of time building a
“The audience here understands my music very well, they know how to dance to it.”
Xin and her friends are enjoying JLS’ set at the Mainstage. “I think Jiang impresses a lot of people because he is very humble,” Xin says. “And even if you haven’t met him, you can see in an instant that he’s a very clever guy who makes brilliant music. The mix between traditional Asian music and Western EDM is really engaging. He’s also kind of cute,” she giggles.
“We are really proud of Jiang,” Yanan tells us. “He mixes different Asian styles of music with EDM and reggae. It’s very unique.” Her friends Tong, Jiny and Hanyichen agree. “We actually know him from Rave, the talent show. We truly believe that this can be a sound that would be appealing to the entire world. It’s also good to showcase Chinese music in a way that’s really universal.” 21
LIVE FROM TOMORROWLAND Besides hosting Rave, Tencent also brings electronic music to China by broadcasting live from Tomorrowland. But they’re far from the only one to do so. People of Tomorrow all over the world are able to enjoy the sounds of Tomorrowland through various channels. Across both weekends, Tomorrowland was covered by: • Tomorrowland – One World Radio (Online, Worldwide) • Studio Brussel (Radio, Belgium) • Radio Contact (Belgium) • Plug RTL – (TV, Belgium) • Proximus TV (Livestream, Belgium) • MTV (Worldwide) • Radio 538 (The Netherlands) • Fun Radio (France) • BIG FM (Germany) • RAI 4 (TV, Italy) • Virgin Radio (Romania & Switzerland) • Capital FM (Russia) • Dance FM (Dubai) • Tencent (Online, China)

MADNESS ON AIR
Tomorrowland’s very own 24/7-in-the-mix radio station goes by the name of Tomorrowland – One World Radio, and they’ve been broadcasting non-stop ever since the kick-off in February. Since then they’ve been at Tomorrowland Winter, made worldwide headlines with the infamous Tomorrowland Top 1000, broadcasted live from a boat in Ibiza, and hosted weekly shows by Armin van Buuren and NERVO. Tomorrowland – One World Radio is set to keep on bringing you the freshest tracks, classic sets from Tomorrowland’s history and all kinds of news coming out of the worldwide dance music scene. This weekend, however, they’re live from the grounds of Tomorrowland non-stop as they bring you the best DJ sets and welcome a huge number of artists to their studio. Only yesterday, they had Shapov, Patrice Bäumel, Adriatique and many more coming in. Magnificence got the studio with Adam K too, and talked about their first Tomorrowland: “We’re still adapting to our success. It was a really sick show. Even though it was raining, people went crazy as soon as we got behind the decks.” And then there was Kris Kross Amsterdam presenting their brand-new latest record: “We just flew in from Ibiza, so we’re totally ready for Tomorrowland.”
WAVE YOUR FLAG
In order to celebrate Tomorrowland’s 15th birthday, a Limited Edition Gold 15 Years Tomorrowland Flag has been designed. Good news: TML by Tomorrowland is going to reward five very lucky People of Tomorrow with this exclusive collector’s item. Want in? Here’s what you need to do: take a picture of you and your Official Tomorrowland Flag (that’s the regular flag!) at a unique location that means something special to you. Upload your photo to Instagram or Facebook, follow @TMLbyTomorrowland and use the hashtag #TomorrowlandFlag. Five people will be selected by random pick and receive a Limited Edition Gold Flag. Their names will be announced on the TML by Tomorrowland social media pages and they will be contacted personally on Facebook or Instagram on Friday, August 30, 2019. All images will be displayed on flag.tomorrowland.com so that everyone can share in the love.
UNITE: IN SYNC WITH THE WORLD
Togetherness is one of the most profound feelings to be had in the humble life we human beings lead. With music being the international language that defies every border, creed and origin, Tomorrowland set to work building a connection with ravers all over the world through UNITE. The message is as easy as it is pure: no matter where you’re from in the world, everybody can be one of the People of Tomorrow. Yesterday the official UNITE With Tomorrowland moment took place. Going live from the Belgian Holy Grounds, friends at the four UNITE With Tomorrowland gatherings in Athens, Barcelona, Malta and Porto got to share the magic of the Mainstage, with a lot of people following the livestream at home in the meantime too. Each of the UNITE countries put their individual touch to the magic that is unity, but the initial spark of enchanted togetherness was nevertheless ignited right here under our feet. During Vini Vici’s set at the Mainstage, the UNITE connection was made and kept on going all the way through David Guetta and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s performances, while MC Stretch kept everybody from Boom to the rest of the world on their toes. 23

FOCUS ON THE MUSIC
What’s the red line running through the wisest story ever told on Earth? That’s right – music. From the tentative first sounds of the day at the smaller stages to the thunderous roar of thousands singing along by the Mainstage, there is never a quiet page in the Book of Wisdom. On the following pages, you can learn all there is to know about the sounds that you will hear during your last day at Tomorrowland. You’ll find artist interviews, biographies of acts that you don’t want to miss, the full timetable for all stages, and a daily Daybreak Sessions feature. Read on, and enjoy the music!
FOOTWORXX

LOTUS
In Belgium, if you want to move your feet to 180+ BPM beats, Footworxx is where you turn. Hardcore/gabber as a genre may have its origins in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, but Belgium wasn’t far away, so the genre soon gained popularity in the nineties. The music spun at Footworxx events is the modern cousin of that oldschool sound: not for the faint of heart, and therefore suitable for a smaller, dimly lit space such as the Cage. Whatever happens in the Cage stays in the Cage, or so they say, and we’re not allowed to reveal too much, but we will say that you can expect DJ sets at mind-boggling speeds by experienced hardcore DJs such as D-Fence, Sandy Warez, Mad Dog, Lady Dammage and others.
Trance is in a continuous state of evolution and – what’s a in a name! – Armin van Buuren’s very own A State of Trance imprint very much reflects the vibe of the current scene. ASOT is the world’s leading radio show in the genre, and also hosts regular events at massive venues around the world. At this year’s ‘Lifting You Higher’ show at the Freedom stage, you’ll find German duo Cosmic Gate, relative newcomer Andrew Rayel from Moldova, W&W’s euphoric alter ego NWYR, brilliant German veteran of the genre Markus Schulz, prize-winning trance producer Gareth Emery and, of course, Mr. Van Buuren himself.
The brothers Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike have been an essential part of Tomorrowland for about a decade now. It should come as no surprise, then, that their stage hosting will be outstanding today. The artists featured at Smash the House are a crossover between EDM and modern urban sounds. A taste? There’s iconic cake-thrower Steve Aoki; J Balvin, who is arguably Latin music’s biggest star; and one of the most prominent Dutch-language rappers of the moment, Lil Kleine – all in one day, all on one stage. As if that weren’t enough, Smash the House is also offering a place to the Symphony of Unity today, bringing EDM to life with a reallife orchestra. Go check out the amazing variety of artists here!

Early afternoons at Tomorrowland are the perfect moments to ease into yet another festival day in Boom’s beautiful surroundings. Tomorrowland helps you a little, as they’ve programmed unusual early DJ sets by some of the world’s biggest DJs. They’ll play sets they don’t get to play a lot, ones that allow you to eat a croissant and drink a cafe au lait while you dance. Today’s Daybreaker is Belgium’s rave don Yves Deruyter, whose name will forever be connected to the legendary early rave music of Bonzai Records. Impressively, there doesn’t seem to be a single influential Belgian club where Yves hasn’t been a resident DJ. Globe, Barocci, Cherrymoon, Extreme, Carat and La Rocca are just a few places where the living legend used to play his mesmerizing sets on the regular. Deruyter’s sound is usually very ‘nineties’ and uptempo, but who knows what the selector comes up with this time? His decade of choice was also known for the abundance of chillout rooms at raves. We’re thinking Yves may play you some gently bouncing ambient house tunes, but will he actually? It is the final day of Tomorrowland, of course, so there’s also a slight chance that Mr. Deruyter will think to himself, “to hell with it, I’ll start off with some banging early rave and breakbeat tunes by The Prodigy, SL2, Joey Beltram and Speedy J.” And then top it off with his own newly written ninetiesinspired material. There’s only one way to find out this afternoon, and you know it!

CHARLY LOWNOISE & MENTAL THEO FOCUS ON GLORIOUS SUNDAY Q-DANCE | 22h00 – 23h00
Tamagotchis, Tetris and a Walkman... yes, that’s the ‘90s we’re talking about. En masse, the Netherlands hummed along to a track made by some new kids on the block. “I found the love but it didn't last, wonderful days belong to the past;” these were the wonderful days of Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo. This year, they celebrate their 25th anniversary as a DJ duo. Add to that Tomorrowland’s 15th birthday, and you’ll understand the duo’s closing set at I Love the ‘90s will take you to higher dimensions. But before it’s time to pull out all the stops, let’s go back on a hardcore trip down memory lane with these two Dutch veterans. Your track ‘Wonderful Days’ went viral back in the early ‘90s. You became stars practically overnight. What did an average weekend for you look like back then? Mental Theo: “Flights, hangovers, traveling, parties, hotels, bars, shopping malls, girls, parties, restaurants, flights, flights, and occasionally a studio.” Charly Lownoise: “It started on Monday, ended on Sunday and started again on Monday. We flew all over the world. In the exceptional case when I was home, I just ate a sandwich in my little garden near the Dutch sea.” What do you miss most from those days? Theo: “Performing at illegal underground raves.” Charly: “Britney Spears, Blümchen and The Backstreet Boys. Man, the times we had with those guys. Throwing cakes through a tv-show at Nick’s birthday party...”
Do you have nicknames for each other? Charly: “I usually just say ‘Heey áwwe’!” (That’s ‘Hey mate’ in Charly’s local Dutch dialect – eds.) Theo: “Sketpaal.” (As to this word, we have no clue what it means whatsoever – eds.)
Any bad habits? Theo: “About myself? Do we have time for that?!” Charly: “I still pick my nose and shoot away what comes out. Oh, and besides that, I should also stand up more for myself and say what I want.”
OK, áwwes. Now that we’re talking nostalgia anyways - what were your most memorable performances? Theo: “The first Love Parades and our performance at Cleveland’s Metropolis Nightclub. Tommie Sunshine came by to see us as that night and told us how big we were in the underground scene in America in the ‘90s. And our first time at Tomorrowland, of course. We wanted to play here so, so badly.” Charly: “I’ll never forget our performance on Independence Day in the middle of the Australian Outback. We shared a stage with Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier. As soon as we started playing, the sun came up! Another one I’ll never forget is one of the first Love Parades, when 180,000 people sang along to ‘Wonderful Days’.”
Theo, your son’s DJ’ing as well. As alcohol, sex and fast cars popped up frequently on your own path, what advice would you give him? Theo: “Don’t be as naughty as your father, haha!”
How did you raise each other over the last 25 years? Theo: “Totally wrong, haha. We were each other’s bad examples. But ultimately this resulted in wise life lessons.” Charly: “I’ve always seen Theo as my mentor in the artist business. I paid close attention to how he deals with the world. The things that suited me, I’ve adopted.”

Charly, you transformed yourself into a Zen meditation teacher on the side. How does this affect your performances? Charly: “On stage I’m the tough DJ. But besides all the roles I play and masks I wear, I’m also fragile, and have a subtle energy, just like every other human being. If you look into the eyes of a child, an old person or a dog you’ll see that energy. Meditation helps me connect to that. On and off stage.” So, back to 2019. What can we expect of you this weekend? Theo: “We’re going wild. It’ll be a tsunami of great memories from the past 25 years. The best of happy hardcore mixed with some old-school hits.” Charly: “People will go on an unforgettable trip down memory lane. Later that night, when they’ll be lying in their tents, you’ll still hear them singing. We’re going to do exactly what we do best: making happy music! There’s enough war in the world already.”

RENAAT VANDEPAPELIERE Ellum (Core) | 14h30 – 16h30
He’s the man that has made countless dreams come true through his label, R&S Records, which he started all the way back in 1984. Few labels in the dance scene have been as important as his. He’s also the man that at 60 years of age has no desire to retire early. Thankfully so, as Renaat Vandepapeliere is cherished and welcomed gratefully by many. To see someone with his legacy is to see history in its most magical form. He sees himself more as a selector rather than a DJ, playing only the finest and most unexpected sounds, things you’d not soon hear anywhere else. Let Renaat give you a dance music history lesson!
THESE ARE THE WRITERS OF THE BOOK OF WISDOM
NERVO
Mainstage | 18h20 – 19h20
In a world predominantly controlled by men, Olivia and Miriam Nervo have irrevocably changed the industry to what it is today, and paved the way for many female DJs ever since the start of their DJ career in 2005. Which means that it’s not just Tomorrowland celebrating its 15th anniversary this year! ‘Lightning Strikes’, ‘You’re Gonna Love Again’ and ‘Reason’ are just some of the pearls NERVO have created over those years, and that’s not even mentioning the songs they co-wrote, such as the Grammy award-winning ‘When Love Takes Over’ for David Guetta. Always brightly dressed, they bring colour into the lives of the people that come and watch them and spread happiness around like confetti; their energy is infectious and their smile everlasting. Last week, Tomorrowland saw the fierce twins host their own NERVO Nation stage for the second year in a row and today, on this fine Sunday, they’ll take over the Mainstage. Witness how they’ll be adding their own chapter to the Book of Wisdom just before it closes; it’ll make an impression that will stay with you for many years to come.
COSMIC GATE A State of Trance (Freedom)
LOST FREQUENCIES
18h00 – 19h00
21h20 - 22h20
They’re among the longest-standing trance acts in the scene: Claus Terhoeven (aka Nic Chagall) and Stefan Bossems (aka Bossi), better known together as Cosmic Gate. They formed the project when they met by chance through mutual friends during a studio session – they weren’t even friends back then. The first songs released by the duo fell into the then popular hard trance genre, but as trance evolved, so did the duo’s sound. Their more melodic and contemporary strand of dance music earned them a Grammy nomination and eventually led them to where they are now: a solid act performing on Tomorrowland’s Freedom stage.
Still very young, Felix de Laet aka Lost Frequencies can already pride himself on a fanatic global following. His is a diverse discography of ecstatic, melodic tracks with a tropical twang. His biggest hits ‘Are You With Me’ and ‘Reality’ are definitely the ones which skyrocketed his career, but he’s since worked with an impressive bunch of artists to build on these foundations. His collaborators include James Blunt, Netsky and Zonderling, and he’s done remixes for the biggest pop stars on the planet including Major Lazer and Justin Bieber. Lost Frequencies’ melodies are best enjoyed with friends; so bring a big bunch of them and fill that Mainstage vallet.

RICHIE HAWTIN
MK
Drumcode (Atmosphere) | 20h30 - 22h00
Potion (Kara Savi)
The career history of Canadian producer Richie Hawtin has been vast and tumultuous. Hailing from Windsor, a Canadian suburb of Detroit, Richie – being a white kid – initially had a hard time being accepted in a scene which was predominantly black at the time. But Rich persisted, setting up his label Plus 8, where he released his own music alongside work by Kenny Larkin and Speedy J. Eventually Detroit hotshots started digging his music as well - hearing Jeff Mills play one of his tracks was a major milestone in Richie’s early career. Head to Atmosphere today for a special set of strong-headed minimal techno by this true master.
Detroit’s Mark Kinchen, better known by his initials MK, is one of the more underrated and mysterious, yet very high-profile artists of the dance music scene, and he’s held this position for decades. Part of his strength is in the fact that unlike his Motor City pals and techno pioneers Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, Kinchen used his musical talents across a wide range of electronic genres including house, techno, R&B and pop. In more recent years, MK has even worked with chart-topping artists including Pitbull and Lana del Rey. Go see MK, this ultra-experienced DJ/producer knows what he’s doing.

ZOLEX
Age of Love (l’Orangerie) | 21h00 – 22h00 Zolex’s personal Book of Wisdom started 30 years ago, playing student bars 7 days a week. Dedication, passion and a true understanding of what makes people tick brought him to some of Belgium’s finest clubs, such as The Globe and Carat, where he secured residencies, playing sets up to 12 hours long. With all those hours of dance floor experience under his belt, Zolex started producing his own music, scoring a massive club hit with ‘Time Modulator’ in 1993. Today, he is set to play a live performance, recreating the classics of those days with the original analogue machines.

techno weren’t as easily separable as they are today. What is for sure is that it’s progressive, melodic and trippy, with an edge of darkness to it: imagine a big kettle with breakbeat, techno and house thrown in, stirred twice and finished off with some fresh spices Zolex only discovered the day before. Frank Zolex is a storyteller at heart, always weaving a red thread through his sets; go to Age of Love to contribute to his chapter in the Book of Wisdom.
You blinked and it happened: over the course of just a few years, Netsky grew out to be one of the biggest names in drum & bass. One of the key strengths of the Belgian producer turned out to be his faith in his own productions. The title of his 2010 song ‘Memory Lane’ happened to be visionary; it is now one of the key hits of the genre, one that people keep on going back to when they wish to go on a trip down - yes memory lane! Netsky will be rocking the Mainstage today, so if you like his sound, grab all your friends and make his set one for the books.

Drumcode Records head honcho Adam Beyer is not your typical techno DJ. Sure, he plays raves and festivals across the globe and has done so for as long as some of us have been alive. Yet he is also a father and husband – Adam manages to combine his wild side with suburban life. It may well be the key to his success, and the reason for his endurance in this challenging scene. Musically, there’s much to get excited about today – expect a set of full of pounding, bass-heavy techno with a touch of psychedelic acid here and there. An experience for the mind, the body and the soul, in other words!
