Course Description The New Graduate Student Seminar for International Students (SAHS-GE.2003) is a required, non-credit seminar that meets once a week for ten weeks, and follows a syllabus with the following goals: To explore the facilities, services, and resources at New York University and in NYU Steinhardt; To introduce strategies for understanding and adapting to graduate study; To ease transition to the U.S. by providing a space to explore the U.S. higher education system and U.S. culture, values, customs, and traditions; To foster a community that shares cultures, values, customs, traditions, new experiences, and discoveries; To foster a community that discusses questions, problems, issues, and concerns.

Course Objectives

After completing the seminar, students will be able to: 1) Identify relevant academic policies, processes, and procedures related to graduate study; 2) Identify and apply strategies for academic success; 3) Identify appropriate campus resources and opportunities that contribute to the academic experience, goals, and campus engagement; 4) Describe and demonstrate an understanding of the principles of academic integrity and responsible citizenship within and beyond the campus community; 5) Articulate differences and similarities between previously experienced education system(s) and the U.S. higher education system. 6) Present a critical self-reflection of personal, academic, and social experiences related to the transition to New York City and NYU Steinhardt.


Course Information

1. Email Account: Email is the official form of communication at New York University. Members of the NYU community (staff, faculty, your instructors, etc.) will send messages to your NYU email address. Set up your NYU email account (at home.nyu.edu) and use it in all NYU-related correspondence. It is advised to check the email account on a daily basis. 2. Grading: Pass/Fail. Students are expected to complete assignments, attend classes, and actively participate in class discussions and activities in order to earn a passing grade.

Course Requirements 1. Required Attendance: Contact your instructor(s) in advance to make other arrangements if you are unable to attend a class. More than two absences will result in a failing grade. 2. Participation in Campus Events: During the ten weeks of seminar, attend at least two campus events and write a brief (250 words) reflection on each of those events; email your reflections to your Instructor(s). Reflections, are your personal responses to an experience, reading, and/or issue. Questions to keep in mind when writing your reflections include: What details did I notice? What emotions did I feel? How has/does this experience, affected me? Events may be hosted by your department, Steinhardt Student Affairs, or an NYU Office such as the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP), the Center for Spiritual Life, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Student Center, the Wasserman for Career Development. 3. Academic Integrity Quiz: All new international graduate students must complete the NYU Academic Integrity Tutorial and Quiz. 4. Office of Global Services Workshops: Students must attend in person or view online workshops on work authorization and travel as related to their visa status presented by the Office of Global Services. 5. Class Presentation: Students will complete an end of session project and present to the class on their most impactful experience during their first semester at NYU Steinhardt. 6. Other Assignments: Students are responsible for all assignments as outlined by instructors. Academic accommodations are available for students with documented disabilities.
