Message from the Dean Professor Alec Tzannes Dean UNSW Built Environment I congratulate all the students who have completed their degree at UNSW Built Environment and now become our alumni. This catalogue conveys through selected study themes and projects from our final year studios something about the unique student experience at UNSW Built Environment along with the outstanding skills of our students and academic staff. UNSW Built Environment is a knowledge leader in the design, delivery and management of the C21st city and its elements. Our research is directly relevant to the development of knowledge within built environment professions and underpins our curriculum. Embedded in the curriculum are core values centered on the thinking and practices required to deliver sustainable urban environments of deep cultural value. Design education in all of its forms, including evidence-based design processes is at the centre of our degrees. This is complemented by the development of discipline knowledge with interdisciplinary design and research orientated projects.

These projects align with advanced contemporary practices in industry, ensuring that as graduating students you are at the forefront of the built environment professions as innovators and leaders. This year celebrated the establishment of our new school structure comprising ASA+D, the Australian School of Architecture and Design, and AGSU, the Australian Graduate School of Urbanism. ASA+D is the most comprehensive built environment school in Australia with a complete range of undergraduate and postgraduate professional degrees. ASA+D’s sister school, AGSU, is tailored to post-professional study. AGSU is the research engine of the Faculty and was created to fill the gap in the number of leading thinkers on urban issues. This is an exciting time to be part of the UNSW Built Environment community. I wish every graduate a successful and satisfying career. In many respects, our relationship is just beginning. As you travel the world through your work you will meet many alumni and make special bonds of lasting value. Message from the Program Director Stephen Ward

This 2013 collection of final year Bachelor of Industrial Design (BID) student projects illustrates some of the many ways in which design can make a contribution to people in all kinds of circumstances. Projects chosen by students this year have produced designs that meet practical needs, provide new insights and improve well-being for individuals and the community. It is particularly pleasing to see the interest taken in design projects that recognise emerging opportunities due to demographic change and innovative application of technologies. The final year of the four-year BID at UNSW gives students a true Honours level study experience. In both the research phase and the design development, students must undertake independent exploration in a largely self-directed project. There is an expectation that the skills, knowledge and spirit of

inquiry cultivated throughout the whole of the BID program will be evident in the final design and supporting rationale. This exhibition is about the students’ ideas and sheer hard work in bringing a substantial project to completion but it is also appropriate here to acknowledge the role of those who taught, supervised and guided along the way. The relatively few full-time staff members in the industrial design program are supported in this effort by a larger number of sessional staff who bring experience and skills from their roles in industry. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the organisations that have engaged with us to offer valuable learning experiences such as design competitions, factory visits and guest speakers. It has been a privilege to have been on the journey with the students now finishing - to see them make discoveries, extend their capabilities and sometimes teach their teachers a thing or two. The students have completed a four year program that integrates design process with learning in diverse areas such as marketing, engineering, manufacturing, history and design theory. They have skills for creative work and a framework for making innovative, appropriate and responsible choices. The students now presenting their work are ready to take up positions where they will make a valuable contribution to industry and society. On behalf of the team of full time and sessional staff, I congratulate them and wish them well in their further endeavours.

Message from the Course Convenor Andrew Fowkes

Each cohort has a unique dynamic with a broad range of personalities, all striving to achieve the highest standards of design during their academic career. The students and the projects they choose are the key elements that makes teaching ever changing and forever challenging, and ultimately rewarding. Year four is considered to be the bridging year whereby the career direction and anticipated step into the ‘real world’ can be shaped by a chosen project topic. The student is required to focus on a project territory that becomes the basis of their final major project, their portfolio piece. The research topics range from Metropolitan, Domestic, Office, Medical, and Transportation through to Sport. Within these fields the student must identify an unmet need that can be addresses with design intervention.

As they leave the security and protective environment of academia and move into the professional workplace a student’s commitment, passion and expertise must be self evident in their design portfolio. I feel my studio support Craig Burke, Greg Marten and myself encourage our students to grow and show their true talents. I always see this particular teaching opportunity as an honor. To play the final role in assisting these students make the life-changing leap into industry after four years of commitment is a privilege. The success of this working partnership is self evident in the number of design awards given to the students. I wish my final year students every success in whichever direction life takes them.

All final projects are anticipated to be inherently well rounded, visceral and present a solution that suit the everchanging sophistication of the users needs and aspirations. All of the skills and abilities mastered in previous years teaching are delivered to a professional standard that assists the young graduate in achieving a transition towards their chosen design careers.

SENS - Warning system for stroke during the night Stroke is the second leading cause of death in Australia. Not only is it a traumatic experience for everyone involved but it is even worse when stroke strikes twice. People who have experienced a stroke are at higher risk of a stroke occurring again. If a stroke occurs during the night, the time of attack is unknown which means they are excluded from the treatment of tPA as it needs to be administered within 4.5 hrs of onset. In order to address this problem, SENS is a system that provides ease of mind whilst sleeping at night. It comes with a head sensor and a bedside device which talk together via blue tooth.

The forehead sensor will detect if oxygen levels reach a critical level. When this occurs, the bedside device will set off an alarm to warn the surrounding people to seek immediate medical attention. SENS will note the time of onset so the option of tPA treatment is still available. Blood pressure is the number one modifiable risk factor for stroke. This is why SENS is equipped with a means for measuring and monitoring blood pressure easily. By resting your hand onto the device, SENS can measure your blood pressure through the arteries in your wrist.

bikeboot bikeboot is a secure trunk for a bicycle. bikeboot locks to the bicycle providing secure storage space. It easily detaches and can be wheeled (like an airline bag) to carry shopping, a laptop, paperwork or to store a helmet. bikeboot has been designed to enhance cycler safety. Many cycling accidents are due to car drivers not seeing the rider, so bikeboot features rear and side lighting to ensure high visibility.

Alpine Armour – LiteGUARD Alpine Armour’s LiteGuard vest is a snow-safety vest featuring several unique and innovative design components. It reduces the risk and impact severity of potential hazards. Primary components include electroluminescent lights and reflector tape, a combined visco-elastic polymer and polycarbonate padding, and a unique high-impact co-polymer emergency shovel. The LiteGuard vest makes it easier to find workers and sports-enthusiasts in dangerous snow and

night time conditions while also protecting them from the weather and some impacts. Softshell technology provides the LiteGuard with a wind and water resistant outer layer. The adjustable elastic straps and accessible pockets makes LiteGuard both practical and non-restrictive to wear. Cash-in-transit Safety ST-M is a new security trolley to provide better protection against Cash-in-Transit robberies during the pavement walk between the armoured vehicle and a client’s location. The GPS tracking system accurately determines the trolley location and checks that it is on the set path to the client. If the tracking system detects ST-M goes off the path by just 10 metres, an inflation pack beneath the trolley will eject and inflate. This lifts the whole trolley off the ground, making it very difficult to move. Would-be robbers cannot easily move it from the robbery site. If further movement is detected, a dye bomb inside the case activates, making the cash unusable. The tracking system also alerts the police and provides a precise location.

The trolley is made of heavy duty steel to give further protection against attacks and to add weight so it is more difficult to move when the inflation pack is activated. To further increase security, the client is given a smart access card. The trolley can only be opened with this smart card; it cannot be opened by the guards.

REACH – Portable Emergency Focused Ultrasound Reach is a revolutionary ultrasound system that enables paramedics and emergency doctors the ability to diagnose and control internal bleeding. It operates on a dual system utilizing Pulse Doppler ultrasound and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HiFU for short) to do so. HiFU ultrasound allows an effective and noninvasive method to cauterize internal bleeding within a patient. This technology has been developed by DARPA in order to provide a quick and effective method of non-invasively stopping blood loss within a wounded person. Internal bleeding is one of the leading causes of deaths worldwide, with current methods of control being extremely invasive and heavily

reliant on pharmaceutical intervention. The mechanics that drive internal bleeding form a closed loop once set into motion; with the lose of blood driving causing hyperthermia, directly affecting the heart’s ability to pump blood at an optimal rate; leading to less air being delivered to the organs, which only further encourages the worsening biological conditions of the patient. Therefore it is imperative that emergency medical response teams have access to a quick, effective and non-invasive method to stem internal bleeding – with REACH virtually allowing them to “reach” in and stop the source.

Sanctuaire Sanctuaire is a wall-mounted daytime sleeping aid designed for people who work night shifts, and for other daytime sleepers. The name reflects its purpose - to shelter users from factors that prevent/disturb their sleep and to provide healing through light therapy. Sanctuaire tackles the 2 main issues associated with daytime sleep; light and sound. The canopy darkens the area in the user’s line of sight. Its height can be adjusted by voice-control. Builtin stereo speakers with Bluetooth technology enable users to mask disruptive external noise with music or white noise from their smartphone.

The dawn simulation feature, combined with an alarm function, results in a more refreshing sleep. Inside the cover are LED lights which can be adjusted for brightness - from dim to 470 nm. Sanctuaire provides light therapy to assist nightshift workers’ adjust their body clock or to help people with winter blues (SAD). A touchscreen interface on the inside cover allows users to set up and customise all functions. X-tend X-tend is a stability support designed for sailors with disabilities. With one hand user can extend and hook the device on to wires or pad eyes around the boat. Depending on individual’s need, one or two units can be fitted onto a standard belt or harness. Pushing down the single button opens the gate and air valve which enables attachment plus the telescopic cylinders to extend. Once attached X-tend absorbs both pushing as well as pulling motions with or without the user holding it. In an environment with insufficient handholds the ergonomic handle offers users a safe hold at any given time without otherwise being in the way.

On a rocking, heeling and constantly moving boat balance can be a struggle for anybody and with a disability the difficulties can be multiplied. With the provided stability full focus can be on the work at hand. X-tend enable users with amputations, paraplegia, Cerebral palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, brain injuries as well as able-bodied to use their strengths and extend their abilities.

Re.source Re.source is a complete disposal system for household organic waste. Household waste that is currently disposed in the sewer can now be put to use as garden compost. Re.source is a filtration system that attaches to an existing kitchen food waste processor. This system includes paper pods which are used for the insertion of waste into a garden. Water from a food waste processor unit passes through a filter screen. The leftover waste product is collected in a chamber and once it is filled an alarm sounds. The waste is then ready to be transferred into a removal tray.

A hole is prepared in a garden to receive the paper pods. The tray from the main unit is pulled out of its housing and its contents are poured into the buried paper pods. Over time both the paper pod and the waste material will degrade and fertilize the ground. This system will reduce the impact of household waste on the environment by preventing waste from going to ocean outfalls and by using this waste as compost.

AAR AAR (Agricultural Aerial Reconnaissance) is a data gathering aerial vehicle system that can be used to better manage farms. With a global strain on primary resources, efficient farming guided by intelligent systems can improve farm productivity and sustainability. The system consists of a docking station and quad copter, controlled using a smartphone, tablet or computer. The farmer can customise GPS guided flight paths or flight mission types from a range of pre-programmed functions. The copter unit records data using an on-board multi-spectral camera and an automated Global Positioning System. The copter intelligently flies

back to the docking station when batteries are low and to upload the reconnaissance data via wifi. The data can be collected daily, giving farmers and agronomists a dynamic view of the farm. Data provided includes soil type, soil maturity, fertiliser success rate, moisture retention, vegetation cover and water quality. This data is crucial in developing focussed and intelligent farming practices, and in achieving higher yields.

Spark Alert - Preventing Electrical Shock Spark Alert is an electric field meter sensor that can be worn by construction workers. The sensor warns the worker when they get too close to a dangerous electrical environment, such as a broken electrical cord or a overhead powerline. One sensor is attached to the worker’s helmet, and two others can be worn on the wrist or attached to tools. The sensors are connected by ‘Bluetooth’.

The sensors detect a dangerous electric field, for instance, a broken cord is nearby the worker. If the worker enters a dangerous area, the helmet sensor vibrates, and the wrist and tool sensors vibrate and flash an LED light, warning the worker of the danger.

Ranger Ranger is a revolutionary, portable public barbecue system which is set to change the way Australians socialise throughout parks and public spaces. Ranger allows users to have more freedom over where, when and how they barbecue. A high temperature resistant plastic outer casing allows the unit to be lightweight enough to be carried through parks to one of many docking stations. The docking stations are part of the wider Ranger system, offering shelters and tables to dock the barbecue onto. Having defined docking stations prevents users barbecuing in a high risk area, reducing the risk of fire damage to a park and the wider environment.

A LED light around the start button flashes when the hotplate reaches a food safe temperature. The underside of the barbecue lid is equipped with a hygienic stainless steel food preparation bench. When a user finishes barbecuing, they simply carry the Ranger barbecue back to the vending station where it docks, refills with gas and is steam cleaned ready for the next user. Ranger barbecue system also reduces day to day maintenance costs to councils and park managers.

Consequently the Atlas brace is designed with empathy for patients’ emotional, psychological and medical needs. These needs include comfort, dignity, self-esteem, social connection and acceptance. The lightweight Atlas brace features a clean aesthetic composed of low profile, organic curves and streamlined forms. Incorporation of the upper torso attains greater stability. All head components are positioned outside the patient’s line of vision. The design of the cut out pattern is highlighted against the contrasting blue of the Sorbatex™ foam padding. Cut

The washable padding evenly distributes pressure, wicks moisture away from the skin and is luxuriously soft to touch. Tritenous Tritenous is a knee pad for treating patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee), by using three polyurethane rods to imitate the movement of knee tendons, reducing the force received by the user‘s knee while doing frequent jumping activities. The polyurethane rods are separated by 30 degrees to give a full coverage of user’s tendon, while the EVA rod holds against user’s tendon to reduce force. Sports such as basketball and volleyball are at high risk of jumper’s knee, Tritenous can reduce the force received by user’s tendon, and it also improves the jumping ability by adjusting the

pulling strength and applying different grades of rod. Tritenous also allows people with knee injury to resume their everyday activities, by reducing the force to the user’s injured tendon during movements, hence a faster recovery time. While Tritenous focus on treating jumper’s knee, it also protect users from external impacts, when user receives impact from incidents such as accidently landing on the knee, force are absorbed in the EVA foam to minimise impact to the user.

Remote Rural Recovery ResQ is a personal alert and emergency locator beacon for people working in remote areas of Australia’s rural environment where communications are hindered and response times can be increased. ResQ uses GPS technology in conjunction with two-way satellite communications for improved communication with rescuers, thereby reducing time to receive aeromedical support. In an emergency ResQ can be activated manually or, if the user is

not moving, can send a distress signal automatically after allowing an opportunity for the user to cancel a false alarm. For everyday use, ResQ also allows workers to use the communication system to aid non-emergency recovery with local assistance. Alerts are segregated into three different levels of response to ensure the most efficient and relevant form of recovery assistance is called.

nocturn The ‘nocturn’ kit is designed for children and provides an alternative to an overnight sleep-study at a hospital. Currently an overnight sleep-study requires a child to be attached to a large bedside machine with a vast number of wires and electrodes. It is a tedious process and requires much time, patience and resources. It also requires a parent/guardian to remain overnight.

With ‘nocturn’, hospitals can provide a kit to families for a convenient sleep-study in the comfort of their home. Comprised of a shirt, cap and socks, it features a number of sensors that can accurately diagnose a wide range of sleep disorders. ‘nocturn’ has all the necessary parts built into the garment to allow for a wireless and hassle-free experience.

SteriSafe SteriSafe is a holistic hand hygiene system designed for use within large-scale food processing plants. The SteriSafe system comprises of an automated hand washer, a zone sensor, a wearable unit and a charging dock. The automated hand washer uses highpressure jets of an antimicrobial solution to rid hands of Noroviruses and bacteria. Zone sensors communicate to the wearable unit as well as the automated hand washer.

Saturn’s Rings Saturn’s Rings it is new form of flexible lighting. The main principles involved in designing of it are flexibility, comfort, environmental issues, and the newest technology. It is remote controlled; therefore, it is easily to operate. Saturn’s Rings has three independent rings, each ring is independently controlled by remote control and it involves ring rotation along it axial and light switch on and off. This functionality allows setup light direction towards any corner of the room. Additionally, user can change mood of the light by redirecting each ring in various direction. The two main setups are light down and light up. When light is directed towards floor the

light is strongest, thus, user can easily write, read and do other tasks required right light. When the direction of the light is directed towards celling the light in room is ambient, therefore, user can watch TV or comfortably rest. The strength of the light can be adjusted by switching off separate rings. Saturn’s Rings are made from three major materials: transparent acrylic rings (mould injection), aluminium causing of rings (press drawing), aluminium rods (bended), top cover are made from black ABS plastic (mould injected) and aluminium rotor (machined) and electronic components. Model dimensions are 460mm at the base and 330mm height.

Thomas Marlay BIndDes (2006) Design Development & Special Projects Manager Botton+Gardiner “UNSW appealed to me partly because of its reputation and also its ability to offer industrial design in a faculty that brought together all disciplines of the built environment. I was attracted to the course because it provided me with the foundations to pursue a career continuing to do what I already enjoyed doing. “The lecturers at BE are from a broad range of industries, careers and experiences. The group based nature of industrial design study helped me to nurture teamwork and communications skills, attributes that are vital to the application of design method and success within the industry.

“My degree has helped me to develop an analytical approach when undertaking the development of designs within my current role. It has given me a solid understanding of the factors and processes that can control, direct and influence the design of products and their relevance within our society. I particularly enjoyed taking part in the Cormack packaging design competition as well as my final year project, these briefs allowed me to bring together all aspects of the industrial program into one consolidated proposal. “My advice to anyone considering the course would be to look at all aspects of the program and think of how they may relate to your reasons for choosing Industrial Design. Every part of the program has an influence and relevance in successful product design”.
