Graduate Final Thesis ETSAM / UPM / MADRID JUL 2018 TUTORS Chema Lapuerta / Manuel Ocaña / Adelino Magalhaes Assistant tutors Pía Mendaro / Adrián Úbeda / Daniel Guerra / Miguel Molins / Vicente Monroy STATEMENT When we look at the horizon, it allows us to project our visions and ideas. During an instant in time, we can fine tune our focus and as though by magic we arrive at our purpose. In Spanish it is said that we go “De Madrid al Cielo” (“from Madrid to heaven”), but we do not know where that path ends. As a Majorcan, the sea is part of my soul and Madrid is a city that has no ocean. I do not miss the sea because of what it is, but because of the line it creates between sky and water: our clearest concept of a horizon.

BABEL is a vertical city that arises from the heart of Azca, next to Picasso square. BABEL is the expression of urbanism in heights: a structural master plan that divides the skyscraper into twelve separate and autonomous volumes constructing six steel trays to separate these spaces. This building has no permanent owners, instead the volumes are colonized temporarily by the highest bidders. These different actors, who adapt to the rules of each of the volumes, respecting that parts of the volumes have to be public space, use the legal restrictions as tools to define the different uses that grow from each section of the tower until its coronation; three hundred and fifty meters high. If we travel through the different levels of the building, we will find different atmospheres, both private and public, which will allow us, among other things, to admire the sunrise and sunset. In the end, it lets us find a public space where our economic resources do not get in the way of our contemplation of the horizon. Parks, gardens, pools, sport facilities, restaurants, theaters, museums, apartments, hotels... BABEL is an optimist view that provides sustainable solutions for the growth of the mega-cities. This proposal for both public and private uses of this structure, is an architectural experiment that explores many ways of experiencing skyscrapers without elite or socioeconomic restrictions.

07

december 2018

In Madrid, the horizon is hidden behind the surrounding outskirts, the mountains, the towering attractions in the Theme Park or behind the skyscrapers like the Bankia offices. Everywhere else, it is almost impossible to see. The city is somehow always in the way and finding a clear view within more than 2 miles is complicated. But the project BABEL is willing to give you that view.

WELCOME TO SUGARLAND XVIII Pladur Building Solutions Contest Co-Author alongside Gonzalo Rojas Finalist MAY 2018 DESCRIPTION This project was designed for the XVIII Pladur Building Solutions Contest under the slogan “Escape to Fiction”. The theme of the contest was to project an ‘Escape Room’ in the old and abandoned sugar factory of San Isidro in Granada, Spain. A challenge that would introduce the participants to an architectural reflection capable of revitalizing this Industrial Heritage.

The project seeks to apply a design method inherited from the spatial configuration of a video game called Dark Souls. It wanted to create an experimental and virtual stage built to human scale where the environments pretended to be as dramatic, stimulating and unique as possible from the player’s point of view. In this way, it was possible to avoid falling into the routine of conventional design models, thus generating a series of varied maps and environments filled with dynamic illusion. The project seeks to implement the different uses in the existing building through a simple strategy that consists of introducing autonomous architectural elements that work together as a unitary project. The main part of the project is, without a doubt, the scenario of the Escape Room. This universe of spaces, corridors, halls and staircases, all interlaced in a dynamic and random (almost chaotic) way, presents a unique game board. The numerous connections between parts, as in videogames, play an essential role in the experience. The players can try numerous shortcuts that are created as they progress. This is why the whole model is not considered as a single game space. The possibility of dividing the whole appears in different routes that could work independently or generate multiple combinations between them. So, the distributing elements or nexuses, also experiential, are essential: “Zones where everything begins, where all the roads return, and where everything ends”. Our three-dimensional proposal is materially translated into reality through a system that focuses on the use of Pladur (Drywall) catalog products. Thus, the limits that enclose the scenic space, including all its routes, are designed by using the multiple materials and formats offered by the Pladur company. The project contains a wide variety of different products that allows the formal demands that define the proposal to be possible. This skin which is composed of pieces of Pladur, is supported or suspended from a substructure that transmits the loads to a reversible system of lightweight structures. Finally, we tried to bring a digital and abstract space model into a three-dimensional real space by using a constructive method that is both accessible and practical. 19

december 2018

The proposal was born from my collaboration with Gonzalo Rojas. This project came about because of the concern both authors have in their understanding of architecture as a process of spatial experience and a dialogue with construction. Originally, the project is based on the research and development of the Graduate Final Thesis produced by Rojas. In the development of his work, Rojas created a project that wanted to extrapolate the virtues of virtual spaces in videogames. In his own words: “In the new information age, due to new technologies and their impact on our way of life, the role of being an actor has been reinforced to the detriment of the role of the spectator. We speak of experience and perception, essential concerns for videogames, whose main function is immersion. This project aims to show and validate the potential of the spatial design conceived for these environments”.

BACK TO THE O R I G I N S Final Undergraduate Researching Thesis ETSAM / UPM / MADRID JUL 2017 TUTOR Alberto Morell CO-TUTOR Alejandro Bernabeu ABSTRACT Back to the Origins is a theoretical body of work that investigates Le Cabanon, a building pertaining to the last period of Le Corbusier’s designs. Currently, there is a vast amount of information about this small house, but, from my point of view, the majority of this information has the same flaw: the work is described as an isolated construction, without any reference to the magnificent environment in which it is placed.

Finally, this work stands out as a pivotal point in the career of Le Corbusier, being the only work he constructed in wood and having very different characteristics to all the rest of the projects relevant in his illustrious architectural career. At the same time, this exercise of modesty places value in how Le Corbusier returns to the origins of creating and inhabiting, a construction which can be considered a contemporary refuge or home.

23

december 2018

Le Cabanon as an isolated entity in and of itself is a work that offers many lessons, which can be extrapolated from the design exercise. However, without a doubt, it cannot be fully comprehended without including all the surrounding environment. For this reason, in Back to the Origins, a detailed description of all these elements is made and it is depicted in an annex of graphic documentation. A data summary, a set of plans and a photographic gallery are collected in this annex. This documentation has been drawn up thanks to a prospecting trip that I made to the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris and Cabanon itself in Cap-Martin, France.

VIRTUAL CASINO Undergraduate Academic Project ETSAM / UPM / MADRID DIC 2016 TUTORS Federico Soriano / Eva Gil / Pedro Urzáiz / Ángel Verdasco Assistant tutors Agustín Ludeña / Eduardo Castillo / Agustín Martínez / Irene de Santos / Javier Estebala AWARDS Project awarded with honors by DPA / ETSAM Selected for the Spanish Pavilion / Venice Biennale of Architecture 2018 DESCRIPTION This project came about by translating and transforming a series of abstract ideas into the material field of architecture. The initial stage of the project begins with the idea of designing a building that houses a casino and an auto repair shop.

When I think about a casino, a series of images are projected in my mind. Most of these images describe players as they attempt to camouflage and control their feelings. Sometimes, these players go to extremes to hide their emotions from their opponents and this kind of behavior is very representative of poker players; they don not want their opponents to know what they think or feel, this is a huge part of the game. So, I can imagine a “non-physical boundary” between the player’s mental/ virtual space and the real physical one. The main idea of the project is to generate real physical borders between the players, in such a way that each one is literally inside a bubble that provides utmost privacy and comfort. Specifically, this is constructed with a set of capsules that are linked in a continuous indoor space. In the center of the building, an interior patio opens to the full height of the structure and the capsules are distributed from the first floor and they occupy almost the entire construction. The building from the first floor up is light in weight, and we can find EFTE facades that are treated differently depending on the direction of the sunlight. Some of them are opaque, others are translucent. These facades, together with a narrow staircase and the capsules created for the players, are an interdependent structural system that hangs from a metal truss which is located on the top floor. Every capsule is suspended by a cable that reaches the truss, and connected with the other capsules through a staircase. Therefore, non of the capsules are on top of each other, and no structural pieces interrupt the flow of the staircase, so the final spatial configuration and distribution is not random, but actually well calculated to be this way. Inside the capsules, the client will find a perfectly conditioned space with a body support, a sound system, air quality and temperature control, so that the player can feel great comfort when he or she enters a digital world using virtual reality glasses. This project was part of my academic requirements and it was meant to evolve from one thing to another during the course of the semester. It started off as the combination of an auto repair shop and casino and it ended up being a virtual game center. In the end, the vehicle that takes each user from the real and tangible world to a virtual world is a computer network supplied by a series of servers and operators that are on the top floor: a truss where the virtual game center or casino is run or operated and duly maintained. 27

december 2018

Throughout the process of ideation, some conceptual exercises were done in order to discover the key points of the project. These exercises consisted of creating dioramas and videos, and they wanted to reach my ideal concepts of architecture. Among the concepts that emerged in this phase, I must highlight the idea of virtual as predominant.

(GRAN VÍA INTERNAIONAL FILM FESTIVAL) Undergraduate Academic Project ETSAM / UPM / MADRID JUN 2016

TUTORS Chema Lapuerta / Manuel Ocaña / Nieves Mestre / Álvaro Martín Fidalgo DESCRIPTION This project intends to adapt the film script of the movie “El Secreto De Sus Ojos” by Argentine director Juan José Campanella to an urban space. The film is dissected in 42 scenes that take place in The Gran Vía, historically a very important avenue in Madrid, and an urban space with a strong cinematographic past. The project is about how the road interacts with the scenarios of the film. The idea being that the movie is filmed exclusively in this unique urban location and shot by different cameras and audiovisual components at the same time. The plot will take place inside and outside the buildings and it is conceived to be recorded in one action, which means, that the actors will play their characters without stopping the filming.

This is the plot of the film: In 1999, a retired Argentinian federal justice agent called Benjamín Espósito is writing a novel, using an old closed case as the source material. That case is the brutal rape and murder of Liliana Coloto. In addition to seeing the extreme grief of the victim’s husband Ricardo Morales, Benjamín, his assistant Pablo Sandoval, and newly hired department chief Irene Menéndez-Hastings were personally affected by the case as Benjamín and Pablo tracked the killer, hence the reason why the unsatisfactory ending to the case has always bothered him. Despite the department already having two other suspects, Benjamín and Pablo ultimately were certain that a man named Isidoro Gómez is the real killer. Although he is aware that historical accuracy is not paramount for the novel, the process of revisiting the case is more an issue of closure for him. He tries to speak to the key players in the case, most specifically Irene, who still works in the justice department and who he has always been attracted to but never pursued due to the differences in their ages and social classes. The other issue is that Gómez is still at large, no one aware if he is alive or dead. But as Pablo at the time mentioned that passion is one thing that cannot be changed in behavior, Benjamín learns now that premise still holds true.

31

december 2018

The architectural plan describes the movements of the actors, cars and cameras. All these actions are drawn in a large sheet in which The Gran Vía is projected. To make this possible, the lighting design has to be very accurate as the plot takes place in different moments of the day.

V E N D A D A CINEMATOGRAPHIC PROJECT ANTONIO NEBRIJA UNIVERSITY, MADRID APR 2016 AUTHOR OF THE SHORT FILM Cristina Bertrand DESCRIPTION Vendada is a film collaboration project developed by Cristina Bertrand. In this project, I made the design of all the scenarios that appear in the short film. The proposal aims to show, in an abstract way, the creation and the subsequent deconstruction of a home formed by a young couple. The house, like the relationship of its protagonists, is deteriorating due to a series of unpleasant events that lead to a case of gender violence. clik here to watch the short film

about cinema Undergraduate Academic Project ETSAM / UPM / MADRID MAY 2015 TUTORS Jesús Aparicio / Héctor Fernández Elorza / César Jiménez de Tejada Benavides DESCRIPTION The tools that an architect can use in order to inspire are unlimited. During a semester, the Jesús Aparicio Studio Unit gave us three films in which the projects had to be inspired by. These films and my personal proposals are: Two for the Road by Stanley Donen. Bus for architectural journeys. This project was developed by the idea of the diffuse limits of traveling. Something that gets along with the European borders, which sometimes are materialized as poor-defined limits. Thus, the bus has a diffuse limit between exterior and interior space. Also between interior and the bed cabins.

Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock. Motel. The location of the project is at the top of a hill near the national highway that connects Madrid with Salamanca, Spain. In this place, the project proposes a motel design that is solved with a tower that becomes a landscape landmark. It is composed of a core which is embraced by the circular rooms. These rooms have a a 360º-view to the landscape. This design arises to be able to control all the space that surrounds the room in order to feel safe in the middle of nowhere.

37

december 2018

Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock. Apartments building. The project seeks to give to a block patio an important role. As it is described in the film, the courtyard is an urban space that is a protagonist itself. In the design of a residential building, it is proposed to keep the plot unbuilt. This plot becomes the access of a project that colonizes the inner courtyard of a large New York block. Thus, the entire space is equipped with a vertical camping, where customers can stay in floating bungalows, or can park their van on platforms that hang from a huge truss.
