About Me

I am currently studying Design for Industry at Northumbria University in my third year. Being creative has been a passion of mine since I was younger and since GCSE I have always wanted a career in the design world. I am always looking for oppurtunities to utilise my skills in design and solve problems. I enjoy using illustrator in my work as I feel I have picked this software up quite quickly and easily compared to other computer applications and have lots of experience using it on my second year design placement. Outside of university I run my own small business selling acrylic stick on nails, at first it was something just to do in my spare time but it has recently really started to take off and I now have my own facebook page and website where I regularly sell these (search “Toni’s Tips” on facebook).

Senses

Lexus design competition based around the senses. The idea created was an art installation involving memory pods which produced different sounds, smells and noises to help recall significant memories.

Seven Stories

Seven Stories is a book shop in Newcastle that stages creative events and exhibitions. Through a live brief at university as a group we worked with them to help create an idea to get more visitors into the shop.

2

Collect leaflet from a stand at one of the Newcastle Gateshead Cultural Venues.

3

After collecting the leaflet the family would then head to Seven Stories to start “Once Upon a Tyne”.

4

They would then start the “story” by taking a picture in the first stand in reception.

16

journey

The stands would be on every floor of the building each with a different part of the story.

5

6

Each of the boards around the building would include different interactions to make them more playful and interesting.

When leaving Seven Stories they would notice a poster in the cafe which would reinforce the message to enter the competition at home.

7

8

At home they can then use the images that they collected that day to create a custom story on the Seven Stories website.

This story would then be submitted to a competition which they could have the potential to win a meeting with an Author in Seven Stories.

Skills Throughout the next few pages I have shown some projects where I have focused on specific skills such as sketching, model making and solid works.

19

This 2nd year assignment was intended to develop our sketching, model making and development skills purely from our own creativity. I was asked to design a ‘non literal’ product as in a product that has no prescribed function, but which consciously manipulates how an electronic, personal domestic or business product can be perceived.

This lego man was a model making project from my first year of university, After creating an orthographic drawing I then then modelled the lego man using a ratio of 1:3. The materials used were MDF, jelutong and pink foam.

Placement

At the end of my second year I went on a design placement with a company called Visual Architects in Stockport for 3 months. They are a stage events and designs company and I designed graphic work to physical stage pieces for them. You can view my whole placement diary at - http://issuu.com/tonivaleriepilling/docs/placement_diary

As my placement was a graphic design internship I was doing a lot of design work for social media and advertising, these examples shown here are just a few things I did using photoshop, illustrator and indesign.

The main project that I was involved in was the design of 4 16ft pyramids and then 16 others in smaller sizes. The designs to the left are a selection that I created on illustrator. These were then cut out on a CNC router using MDF. We then as a team painted and built up the pyramids over 2 weeks. They have been used at several festivals over summer including an Illuminaughty party in Manchester, Frenchtek in France and Boomtown in Hampshire.

Another installation I designed whilst on placement was a light up board for on the front of the DJ booth at an event called Cirque Du Soul. This event happens several times up and down the country at nightclubs and my work was used for these events in 2015.

Don’t waste, RE-USE!

Waste Not Want Not For the RSA 2015-16 competition I focused on the Waste Not Want Not brief. This was all about how to reduce food waste and so through research, testing and idea generating I came up with a campaign all about re-using food before throwing it away.

33

Insight & Opportunity: 2.8 MT of food is wasted due to being “unavoidable” or possibly avoidable. A lot of these types of food can actually be re-used for other purposes and most people are unaware of this

83%

of people didn’t know they could re-use certain foods

Banana peel shoe polish

34

Watermelon rind candy

64%

of people didn’t know that banana peel can be re-used as shoe polish

Orange peel face mask

Potato peel crisps

83%

of people didn’t know that onion skin can be used as dye

Egg shell chalk

Onion skin dye

4

Solution: Create an ad campaign to bring awareness to the public about how to re-use wasted food

1 They notice packaging on food in Waitrose advertising the re-use waste campaign

4

They get handed a flyer on the way out with more information on

The message of the campaign gets reinforced on the way home

When at home, they create an online account on the Waitrose re-use food page

With the online account they can then do a number of things...

Recieve weekly newsletters with suggested tutorials and food waste news

Watch and try out other users online tutorials then rate and review them

Upload their own tutorials onto their account

Share the results of tutorials on social media using #reusefood
