PILLING

I am currently studying Design for Industry at Northumbria University in my second year. Being creative has been a passion of mine since I was younger and since GCSE I have always wanted a career in the design world. I am always looking for oppurtunities to utilise my skills in design and solve problems. I enjoy using illustrator in my work as I feel I have picked this software up quite quickly and easily compared to other computer applications. However I am hoping to increase all my skills during a placement oppurtunity and work within a close design team. Outside of university I run my own small business selling acrylic stick on nails, at first it was something just to do in my spare time but it has recently really started to take off and I now have my own facebook page and website where I regularly sell these - https:// www.facebook.com/pages/Tonis-Tips/384779231705057?ref=aymt_homepage_panel

This role has helped me improve my team working skills and learn how to stick to deadlines. Having a job whilst at university has also helped me learn how to prioritise my work as I have had to balance my job and coursework

SENSES... This year Lexus held a design competition based around the theme ‘senses’. They were looking for design responses that would explore the 5 senses in pioneering ways. My final idea was an art installation consisting of 4 rounded chairs that would contain 4 different significant memories that most people around the world share. To find out popular memories I interviewed several people out in the town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne to see what they thought they could remember the most. In the end I decided to do ‘holiday’, ‘new years’, ‘christmas’ and ‘birthday’. In each of the chairs certain smells, things to touch and sounds would start to appear to help the user recall memory through their senses. This installation would be outdoors in a public place where people could go and explore these memories whilst on a walk for example.

responses from people after asking “what was one of your most significant memories?” (SMELL, TOUCH, SOUND) “One of my most significant memories is from when I was on holiday when I was younger with my family, the smell of the warm air when you first get out of the plane, the cool breeze of the beach, the smell of sea, the sounds of the waves crashing against the coast and the sounds of the seagulls” “A lot of my memories relate back to Christmas day with my family, everyone gathering round in the morning, opening presents. We have always had a real tree so whenever I smell that I get reminded of Christmas day and obviously the food! Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce!” “My most significant memory was my 10th birthday, I remember being so excited that I was in double figures, I felt so grown up. I specifically remember the smell of the icing on my cake when I went to blow out my candlesand the loud noises of everyone cheering around me, party poppers, horns being blown and of course unwrapping my presents, rustling the paper trying to rip it as quick as I could.” “Whenever I hear fireworks or smell burning that reminds me of new years eve because we always do a family display at ours.”

non-literal form... The idea of this sketching and model making project was to create a final product that is ‘non-literal’ , i.e a product that has no prescribed function however still manipulates how an electrical product can be percieved.

al fresco... The objective of this project was to design a product for eating on-the-go or outdoors. I started off with research and then moved onto some initial concepts which I have shown. My final concept consists of a lunchbox with 3 compartments. Green for fruit and veg, yellow for a sandwich and red for a snack. This is based on the traffic light system used on food packaging to indicate whats healthy and unhealthy for you. The pack comes with a spinner and a pack of stickers to make choosing lunch in the morning a game for the parent and child to create a more interactive experience around lunchtime. In the bottom of the lunchbox I have also added a gel freezer pack which is to help keep the food cold all day therefore can be used at school or at a picnic for example.

16/20 participants surveyed said they ate the same lunch everyday

Spin to choose type of food in morning Can come in larger sizes for picnics Can be stacked to carry around Collapses into itself for storage

Lunchbox is a sliding puzzle When a box is at the entrance it can be opened to eat The sugars are harder to get to To try and encourage children to eat there other foods The sugars are more of a reward

General types of lunches that are eaten : - Meal Deals - Sandwiches from home

This would be bought from a shop The consumer would not know what food is in the closhe Would come with plastic cutlery and different sections, main meal, snack and drink Encourages people to eat a variety of lunches Could be recyled OR work on a deposit system where the consumer brings the closhe back to get some money back

SOLID WORKS... For our CAD classes we got the task of creating pen in solid works from any pen that we already had. These images show my final render assembled and exploded.

Shine... One of my group projects I have done this year was about using light data technology. After extensive research into social interacting and social media we decided to try and create an installation that would bring people together as we found that most social interactions were online. Socialising face to face is becoming less and less and so our final concept using light technology encourages people to gather together. The light beams on the stairs are connected to a sensor and when the beam is broken they create different noises, people can then play together on these stairs and make music together. The light technology would also send data to the users phone so that they could connect with other people who would be at the installation, they can check in and meet people through this. There is a QR code on the final page of this section of my portfolio connecting to the link on vimeo to watch a video prototype of our concept. initial brainstorming...
