Tonka Raycheva
Hello, there! My name is Tonka Raycheva. I am an artist and a graphic designer. Let me share with you a bit of my world. Inspiration... One day it is here, the other it is not . Sometimes it exploads with such an impact inside of you that you feel like there is a huricane that is gonna swallow everything on its way. Like a vulcano that needs to erupt and spill with no limitations. That is how I feel sometimes in front of the white paper. According to the message in my works, it is always different, it is emotion, colours, light, vibration.. breeze... Sometimes the epistle in my art works is hidden, like a secret diary that only quite a few are given the permission to read. But what really matters is to make people feel, to donate them an emotion. The opportunity to feel is what makes us people. When the audience figures out what the encoded message in an art work is, that means they truly connect with the author and the art work is just the link between them... Design.. design is pure, design is simple

Bringing Home the Mona Lisa Movement to return painting to Florence for 100th anniversary gaining international support continued from page 1 According to the National Committee for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage, over 50,000 signatures have already been collected, with the hopes of reaching 100,000 by this coming January to ensure adequate support. In recent weeks, the possibility of temporarily returning Leonardo’s masterpiece continued to gain momentum as it was announced that a meeting will be held at the Louvre in October to discuss the means by which the painting could feasibly be transported. The president of the National Committee for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage will appear before the meeting to discuss a plan for safely trans-

For the price of a seven euro “Priority Card,” patrons wanting to see Florence’s Cathedral can skip the line without waiting. The lines, or “queues” as they are often called, to get into some of the city’s most frequented historic landmarks are notorious for providing long waits; something that can be made even more frustrating by the weather. Despite complaints from citizens that buying one’s way past the rest of the patrons is not fair, Mayor Matteo Renzi defends the decision to allow it. The card, which can be purchased from a hostess directly outside the Cathedral, was created as a program by the Opera del Duomo. Citizens were initially concerned that this increased influx of people could jeopardize the experience of the people visiting the church solely for prayer, but another entrance has been reserved for just such a purpose, although it doesn’t allow access to the majority of the complex itself. Buying the card guarantees access to the Cathedral, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistery, the crypt to Brunelleschi’s dome and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo.
Every year, U.S. Travel & Leisure magazine compiles a list of the world’s top ten cities for international tourism, and this year they ranked Florence second place behind only Bangkok, Thailand. The list uses consumer research and reviews to rank the cities every year through a partnership with ROI Research. The group did so using questionnaires filled out by readers of both the magazine and the online publication last winter. Florence’s rise to second place marks an improvement from last when it was ranked third. In 2009, the city was ranked the sixth best tourist destination. The September issue of U.S. Travel and Leisure even published a ten page story about the city, painting an intimate portrait of why it continues to be such a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. The ranking system applied by the popular magazine has been used for the last 16 years and compares not just

Florence’s ninth annual Corri La Vita was at it again this September 25th, encouraging both walkers and runners alike to show their support by helping to raise money for breast cancer awareness and care. 23,200 hundred volunteers participated, helping to raise over 300,000 euro to support the cause. Piazza della Signoria was packed with participants and spectators young and old, foreign and local, with two legs and four, before the races kicked off around 9:30 Sunday morning. Runners set out first on their 12 km route, followed by the walkers down the 5 km loop. Both laps were lined with the historical places that have made Florence worldrenowned. “The city has always been close to this event, knowing how valuable the con-
tribution is, that the end will support cancer research,” said Councilor Stefania Saccardi from the Department of Health and Social Policies. Saccardi has been working on the event with Deputy Mayor Dario Nardella and President of the Organizing Committee Bona Frescobaldi in part with LILT, the Italian League Against Cancer. “[It] is an extraordinary example of how sport can be at the service of solidarity. The goal is that this year may exceed the already extraordinary achievements of the past,” said Nardella. The past eight years have already raised over two million euro, not including this year’s contribution. This year fans had even more to cheer for because the marathon was unanimously dedicated to the celebration of

Agriculture Minister Giancarlo Galan is confident that the Mediterranean diet will be awarded United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Culural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage status at the committee conference in November. The recognition, as well as addition to the new “Intangible Heritage” list will help safeguard the WebMD endorsed healthful diet from the recent popularity of junk food and foreign Italian food imposters. “It’s a great success for our country, our culinary traditions and our culture,” Galan said. “For UNESCO, this, along with the traditional knowledge passed down from generation to generation, is something unique in the world and worth safeguarding.” The Mediterranean diet, rich in whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables and healthy monosaturated fats, is widely acknowledged for its rich flavors and health benefits. Cardiologists for WebMD promote that the diet can reduce the risks of heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, high blood
pressure and metabolic disorders. “I’m convinced that the Mediterranean diet is good for all western peoples,” Professor Pietro Antonio Migliaccio of Rome University said. He noted that traditional eastern dietary customs and genetic differences do not allow for the Mediterranean diet to thrive in the Orient. Migliaccio, also head of the Federation of Italian Nutrition Societies (FESIN), recognizes that restrictive diets can be dangerous to the dieter’s health, which is another reason why the Mediterranean diet is so beneficial; it does not exclude whole food groups like carbohydrates, and is low-fat, lowcholesterol, and high fiber, making it a better choice for those looking to lose weight. “It’s almost too good to be true -- a steaming pasta dish with tomato sauce and herbs, or a grilled piece of snapper drizzled with olive oil and fresh cracked pepper, or a great salad of greens, tomatoes, a crumble of Parmesan, and a drizzle of olive oil and lemon,” says K. Dun Gifford, Oldways
Preservation Trust president and quoted on WebMD. “Scientists report these dishes are as healthy as it gets.” It is important to remember, the site says, that the diet is a way of life and not a simple weight loss plan. Even healthy food needs to be eaten in moderation, because while the oils are good for the heart, high consumption is bad for the waistline. The lifestyle factors, like exercise and taking time to savor eating meals with friends, contribute to the advantages of the diet. Despite its health benefits, however, the popularity of the diet has declined in recent years among Italians with a rise in popularity of red meat, pastry, and processed food consumption. Traditional Mediterranean food is prepared simply, and rarely deep fried or frozen first. Gaining UNESCO World Heritage status will help combat the growing obesity problem in Italy resulting from the packaged food phenomena. With the status comes the responsibility to preserve and promote
traditional cooking methods and ingredients. Addition to UNESCO’s new “Intangible Heritage” list is not guaranteed, Sue Williams of UNESCO said. Many countries and regions have tried to get on it in the last two years. “It’s new, it’s hot and everyone wants to be on it,” Williams said. Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France, has lobbied extensively for French cuisine to be included. If the Mediteranean diet is added in November, it will be the first national or regional diet on the list. Galan clearly believes the diet should be included. Its health and cultural benefits are reason enough. “The Mediterranean diet represents a sustainable style of living based on eating local products in a convivial setting with your friends and family,” Galan said. Satisfy your taste buds and promote healthy living by embracing fully the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle.

Tips for Groceries in Florence It is always more cost-effective to shop for groceries rather than depending on cafés and restaurants for satisfactory three square meals. Supermarkets in Florence are perhaps the most closely related to the American idea of grocery shopping. Although they vary in size, one thing they all have in common is their wide variety of products. Like American standard supermarkets, they have a produce section, dairy, meat, seafood, dry goods, deli and a bakery. Fruit and vegetable stands can be also an excellent way to practice Italian. Most of these little shops are privately owned, and the owners will often speak little-to- no English. These types of stores are often small and crowded, but full of charm and represent a real way of living the city. The prices are fair
because the produce is seasonal, and this comes with the added benefit of delicious taste. Next to be explored are the specialized stores catering to specific products. These include salumerie, alimentari and gastronomie shops, gelaterie, pasticcerie, foccacerie. Once again, knowledge of at least some basic Italian is useful when shopping in these types of stores, although the chances of finding English speakers are much higher in these shops. Practically all formaggerie and salumerie will feature a lunch menu of panini and/or salads, which makes these stores also a mid - day destination for tourists. The selection at these stores is wide, and they are particularly recommended when looking for a specific product.

Erich Schrader Earlier this month, Italian police busted a ring of “tomb raiders” accused of stealing rare artifacts and ancient materials, having raided the sites of priceless treasures in southern and central Italy. The arresting officers carried out several searches all over Italy and seized over 2,000 historical treasures, including coins, metals, statues and fossils. The investigation spanned more than 20 cities and towns in search of the artifacts. According to officials, 47 people are facing charges that range from illegally obtaining objects belonging to the state to receiving stolen goods. They continued to say that the accused even managed to utilize excavation equipment to obtain the treasure on more than one occasion. As a result, this often led to damage to the artifacts as well as to the archaeological sites from which they were obtained.
Rogge has commented that Rome’s bid is under “solid leadership” with regards to Pescante and added that Mayor Gianni Alemanno is “highly motivated” to win the Games. Currently, Rome’s main competition to get the 2020 Games is Madrid, although recent reports have indicated
that both Tokyo and Istanbul are being considered as possible contenders. Durban, South Africa has also been mentioned as being poised to potentially make a bid for the Games.

Val d’Orcia demands copyright for use of its landscape The city of Val d’Orcia recently introduced a copyright on its landscape, meaning that use of the city’s image will require the permission of the local officials. The copyright, which even includes images of the city’s famous cypress trees on the hill, will cover all commercial or advertising uses of the landscape. Even postcards will be forced to respect the ordinance put forth by the city. Any use of the images of the Crown of Cypress, Vitaleta Church or even the Hills of Belvedere will first require that the producer get the “OK” from officials. According to the City Council of San Quirico, the recently introduced copyright on the Tuscan city’s image is intended to cut down on the amount of exploitation of the area’s natural beauty and unique architecture of San Quirico d’Orcia, a site that is protected by UNESCO. The city council says that the image copyright governs the use of both photos and videos. According to officials,
the goal is not simply to penalize or discourage people from using the images, rather to protect the image and integrity of a piece of historical landscape. The right to use images for commer-

Bisaro Show Anna friends and family that you can hold up a leaning tower with only one hand. Then climb to the top of that tower and see the Tuscan countryside. Eat pizza that comes in a pie that is one meter (or more) long. These adventures and many more are only an hour train ride away. Pisa, a small city in Tuscany, is most famous for its leaning tower, Torre Pendente di Pisa. Every day tourists crowd the Piazza del Duomo to marvel at the crooked tower in the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). The piazza, though outside the city center holds the city’s most famous sights, the oldest of which have been there since 1155. Construction of the bell tower began in 1173 on an unstable foundation. The tower began to lean before it was completed and attempts to correct the lean only made the problem worse. Despite all efforts to stabilize the foundation, the tower was on the verge of collapse in 1990 as it continued to sink and average 0.05 inches per year. Though it still leans, in May 2001 engineers deemed the tower safe to reopen for visitors and it has since become one of the most famous towers in all of Europe. Many tourists take the day trip to the city from Florence and only visit the Piazza del Duomo. However, the city offers a great deal more, like meter long pizzas at Le Scudiere located near the center of town. In addition, Pisa has several museums chronicling medieval history and has one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. Do not miss out on one of the oldest cities in Tuscany has to offer!

Both the Forte di Belvedere and the San Niccolò Tower were, until recently, closed to the public for various reasons. Both have since been reopened, the most recent being San Niccolò this past June after a 300,000 euro restoration project. The Forte di Belvedere was built during the late 16th century by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici and was originally designed by Bernardo Buontalenti. The structure was originally designed as a fortification for a variety of reasons, including the protection the city’s historic center and the city’s center of government, the Pitti Palace, as well as to demonstrate the power of the ruling Medici family.

the 150 years of Italian Unification. Images of Giuseppe Garibaldi, war leader of the unification represented the official Corri La Vita t-shirt. This year the proud green, white and red t-shirts were made by Salvatore Ferragamo. Participants and spectators found the 5k lined with monuments dedicated to Italy’s Unification, in addition to places of artistic importance. The list included Piazza Mentana with its monument for the fallen at the Battle of Mentana, led by Garibaldi against the Papal Army. Palazzo Pitti, location of the former residence of King Vittorio Emanuele II, can also be seen, in addition to the Piazza della Repubblica and the Palazzo Bartolommei. Spectators also had the chance to spot the coach of Italy’s national soccer team Cesare Prandelli, boxer Leonard
If all goes according to the city’s plans, projections indicate that the project could be completed by sometime in 2013 before the mayoral and administrative elections for the city. The city hopes that creating the cable way system will better facilitate tourists’ desires to visit sites in the hills outside of the city center, including attractions such as the Forte di Belvedere and the garden of the Museo Bardini. According to the city, the idea is to create a fast, convenient and environmentally friendly way both to reach the historic sites as well as to do so in a way that displays spectacular views of Florence.

the city itself, but also addresses the issues of accommodations and transportation, among others. When ranking each of the cities in contention, a specific set of criteria and parameters are weighed to accurately assess the quality of each city. Some of the different aspects that are taken into consideration include the culture, the arts, food and restaurants, the hospitality and friendliness of locals and the cost efficiency of visiting. Other cities with notable finishes include Rome (third place), New York City (fourth), Barcelona (ninth) and Paris (tenth). Another recent survey taken by the travel site skyscanner.it reported that Florence is the second most visited Italian city among British tourists. It earned 27 percent of the survey’s vote, finishing behind Venice by just one percent. According to the survey, Rome is the third most popular city for British tourists visiting Italy.

This year’s Corri La Vita marathon exceeds expectations
porting the work to Florence. Venues in Florence that are being considered to potentially host the monumental exhibit include the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Medici. The movement supporting the cause has continued to expand across the globe. While the undertaking was initially confined to Europe, it has even since spread to places in Africa. The painting, which was originally stolen from the Louvre by Vincenzo Peruggia in the early morning of August 21st, 1911, was eventually recovered two years later after being turned in to the police by an art gallery owner.
