W
hile sub – Saharan Africa would consider itself ‘churched’ (e.g. 80% of Kenyans would mark ‘Christian’ on a census form), the reality however is that for most, this a cultural And with a huge majority of the population in the youth bracket, most churches are not adequately equipped to reach this critical demographic. We believe that through engaging in relevant outreach and an intentional and simple discipleship process, the church can have a major ‘leavening’ effect on our world as they are rached, equipped and released to impact all sectors of society - including the media, arts, politics, governance, education, family, business, health and environment. For far too long, the church has been relegated to the sidelines, seen as irrelevant both in transforming the larger society and addressing the needs of the next genera-
tion. Yet the fact is that within every church lies a potent force that our cities so desperately need. The question is how do we unlock this power? At Fearless, we believe it is time for the church of Jesus to wake up to the fact that it has the awesome mandate to change the world! The next 3 days are an engagement towards releasing God’s people for the transformation of our society - or as we say in Mavuno, encers of society.’ We shall be learning from Christian leaders who are fearlessly making a difference in their cities and sectors of society.

s we at Mavuno Church grappled with these questions, God led us through a season that resulted in the development of a simple discipleship process now fondly referred to as the Marathon. The Marathon pre-supposes that discipleship is not a one-time event or class but a life process along a series of observable transitions or rites of passage. Through the Marathon, ordinary people from the society are drawn through outreach into the church, where a process of life-transformation begins. The end result is a radically transformed people who are released back to the society to exert kingdom impact. You will earn more about the Marathon at the Fearless Summit, but here is a graphic representation of it..

SOCIETY

STAGE ONE
...................................................
...................................................................................................... We realized that un-churched people are not looking for a church, but solutions to practical needs. And so, right from the start, we offered a variety of solutions including entertaining musical and artistic events as well as life-stage classes e.g. parenting and marriage preparation. These have served as effective outreach ministries that draw people into our services. We design our services to inspire, engage and provide practical solutions to today’s generation.

2 ......................................................................................................................................................... There is no doubt Kenya is a religious country. National statistics puts it at 80%. And yet among all Kenyans, Christians and non-Christians, there is a sense of uneasiness with this claim to be a Christian nation. Like many nations of the world, public ethics are a far cry from Biblical ethics. Corruption thrives in the public and private sector. Joblessness, rising crime, and endemic poverty are still the staple of evening news on national TV. Perhaps as a pastor, you have wondered where the problem is. Are those who claim to be Christians lying? Or is the problem in the way people understand the gospel? What are we doing right as churches? How do we help Kenyans connect their public confessions with their private conduct? In short, how do we change our nation? As we have wrestled with these questions, we have been drawn back to the basic command of Christ to the church: to make disciples of all nations. Perhaps a large part of the problem is that the church has not focused on its core objective? How can we disciple a rapidly secularizing and godless population? How can we turn self-centered citizens into caring, concerned kingdom agents who offer real solutions to their society, just like

In our services we also talk a lot about our next step, MIZIZI, which is a ten-week transformational experience that helps you connect with God, with people and with your purpose. Many have given their lives to Christ, or experienced renewal in their faith through the ten weeks.
....................................................................................................... Once a Mizizi class ends, the graduates naturally transitions into tightly bonded small groups that we refer to as Life-Groups. In Life Groups, our members not only receive pastoral care they also

discipleship church, as we only do those ministries that support this process of transformation. If it doesn’t support the Marathon, then we don’t do it! Our prayer is to see a generation of people with real issues, coming to Jesus, having their lives transformed and becoming a fearless army of change agents, actively transforming society in whatever sector God has place them. We believe that the solutions to Africa’s problems will not come from the government, the IMF or the World Bank, but from God’s people transformed and released to change their world!

One day, one of the bebas was struggling to raise money to discharge his pregnant wife from hospital, and even after a grueling fundraising effort, he could barely raise the Ksh. 10,000 (USD 110) required. On his way to see his wife and child, the man bought hot water in a plastic bag; water that Mercy would later learn was for washing the newborn baby. This broke her heart and galvanized her into action.

Mercy started by paying off the hospital balance. Since then she has made it her life’s mission to ensure that society’s underprivileged would not suffer such indignity and be kept from healthcare services due to poverty and ignorance. and was very busy doing everything she could to build her thriving career. She was the proverbial ‘top of her class’, and was constantly receiving plaudits for surpassing her huge sales and marketing targets. She had it made. But behind the thin veneer of success was a world crumbling under the weight of her own endeavors. As she attempted to balance between her thriving career and her responsibilities as a mum and a wife, she ladder she climbed, the more distant her daughters became. The turning point came when she noticed that not only were her daughters way more comfortable with the nanny than they were with her, they actually began to refer to her as ‘mummy’. That jolted her, and her world went into a tailspin. At Mavuno she signed up for LEA (Swahili for Parenting), a ten-week experience on intentional parenting. Ashley, her eldest daughter, initially thought her mum enrolling in a parenting class was, in her words, ‘a big joke’. She did the unthinkable and resigned from

Rose eventually signed up to serve as an understudy within the LEA team, and has over the years grown to be not - only a LEA facilitator and parenting coach, she is also a well respected speaker and columnist, lending her voice to numerous television and radio shows, writing a column in a popular lifestyle magazine and speaking and sharing her learnings at various local and - international conferences.

Most of the traders at the market earn a comfortable income, but there are also many others, including the ‘bebas’ (load-boys who carry around the bales) who make as little as Ksh. 50 (USD 0.5) per load.
