Pre-flight Info: PREFACE Welcome to the Life Group Welcome to this exciting part of our journey of faith. We believe that your Life Group experience will become a vital part of your life where you will be transformed so that your will become the Fearless influencer God created you to be. Life groups: WHAT The church is God’s idea. It is the central piece in His plan to pour His blessings on His people and enable them to fulfil their destiny. The word “church” refers to His people in general, those we call Christians. It also refers to His people who gather weekly as a local congregation. The word also refers to people gathered in little functional, interactive, relational groups of impact that we like to refer to as Life Groups. Our Life Groups are small groups of 4 to 12 who meet weekly at someone’s home, in an office or some other place where there is space enough to meet and talk. They go through material like this one. Life Groups: WHY There is nothing God would like more than to see you live life and achieve your full potential in your life; faith, relationships and career (John 10:10b). He would love to see you leave a positive mark in our world. (Matt 5:16). In fact He specifically wants you to be transformed to be better able to make a difference in our world. (Romans 12:2). Here are some markers of someone who makes a difference in our world God’s way: Such a person interacts with and learns from God’s word; is committed to prayer and worship; is excited about and faithfully serves their church community; can’t keep all this goodness to themselves but invites others to their church and Life Group to come and see; finally such a person is a godly citizen of distinction, excelling and making an impact in their relationships, career, neighbourhood and so on. The Life Group is the small group of friends with whom you will be transformed together as you – bond together, learn from God’s Word, apply what you’ve heard at church, care for one another, keep each other accountable and celebrate life together. At the end of each Life Group season you will be that much closer to who God wants you to be. Life Groups: HOW Each Life Group meeting will have some time of informal interaction to know where each member is at. It will also have a discussion time where together you will apply God’s Word to issues in your daily circumstances and keep each other accountable to what this Word says. From time to time there will be other activities for the group to bond, to touch the lives of the less fortunate, as well as times to impact the world around them. There will be opportunities for you to build closer friendships within the group to check on and encourage each other on phone, sms, Whatsapp or other means. There will also be opportunities to invite your friends, colleagues, family members or even casual acquaintances to come and have an experience of your life group or even church. After faithfully attending a couple of Life Group seasons you will be ready ‘giveback’ by joining one of the teams which serve at church or even help your Life Group leader facilitate your Life Group. Don’t be surprised when many people join your Life Group and it becomes a little crowded! That often happens when people are growing, interacting, impacting and having fun! Just remember that when your Life Group does grow to more than 12 people it will be ready to multiply into two so that you can create room for more people to benefit from what you are receiving!

Week 1 Flight Prep: Introduction
Consider this excerpt from a newspaper in a Kenyan newspaper in 2018. Talking about the Chief Justice in Kenya, it says Most Kenyans are Christians “only by profession”, the Chief Justice has said, noting authenticity is required for the state of affairs to change. Maraga said that this change will take place only if people practice true Christianity. “It is sad that a country boasts of 80 per cent of its population being christian yet it is common knowledge that corruption is a pandemic,” he said. “Public resources are shamelessly being plundered by leaders without as much as giving thought to the poor who are in dire need of them. As a result, hundreds of thousands are dying of hunger ... hundreds of thousands are dying of diseases that are not only preventable but also curable.” Maraga acknowledged that human beings are not naturally honest but noted that leadership based on integrity cannot come from the prowess of a mere mortal. “In my humble view, such leadership can only come from one, whatever his religion, in the innermost of whom is the fear of God; one who constantly seeks to do the will of God in the discharge of his or her mandate.” Compare this with a comment made in a missions report by a foreigner about committed Christians in Kenya 58 years before that. He wrote about these followers of Christ, “Their standard of behaviour differs greatly form that of other Christians, in honesty, sexual morality. They are filled with joy and free from fear.”
Runway: Before digging in
In what ways have you experienced the Chief Justices frustrations in your place of work? What frustrates you most about the quality of Christianity in the sector of society you are engaged in? Describe an example of a christian you met recently in your sector who would fit the description given of the committed Christian? Explanation:

The Passage: Background: This passage is taken out of the book of John, one of the four accounts of the life of
Jesus. These particular verses form a part of the last conversation Jesus had before he was crucified. John 15 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch 7 l Flight Manual
that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
People & Places: Who is a part of this conversation in these verses? What gathering was it and what had happened just before this in the verses immediately before?
The Issues: What is Jesus saying about the kind of followers that he would like to see? How do you think society will be affected by these kind of followers?
Closer look: “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must
remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” What does this particular verse mean to you? What makes it difficult for you to be connected to Jesus.
Working on it: What is one step you will take this week to become a fruit bearing follower of Christ in your sector of society?
Memorize this:
John 15:4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. On WhatsApp with your prayer partner this week: Share one way you have tried to remain connected to Jesus to become an effective Christian in your sector of society. Check each other on the scripture memory.

Week 2
Purpose Statement: Church and Mission: The Body of Christ should serve all humanity presenting Christ.
Flight Prep: Introduction For discussion: There are many stories about the church speaking into society. Many say that the
church has lost its ability to speak into the ills that we see in politics, morality, media, the economy and many other areas. Others suggest that the church should focus on preaching the Word because this is the foundation upon which all other issues rest. Can the church have a voice? If the church itself has issues can it say anything, should it say anything? Who really is the church?
Runway: Before digging in
In what ways do you feel the silence of the people of God on societal issues?
Take off: Dig in
Background: Paul is speaking to Christians in Corinth, a cosmopolitan fairly prosperous commercial city.
The passage:
1 Cor 9:19-23 19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
People & Places: What kind of audience do you think Paul would have been talking to? What
would have been the differences between Jews living in Corinth and non-Jews? What kind of standards would the different sets of people have?
The Issues: What is Paul saying about the role of the Christian in society? What does being “all things to all people” mean to you in Christian living in a broken world?
Closer look: Does being like the Gentiles mean adopting their practices? How do you think the Church can be salt and light in a lawless world full of impugnity? Working on it: What is my role as a follower of Christ in speaking into issues? What platforms do I have to exercise my convictions wherever I am?
Memorize this:
1 Cor 9:22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

Week 3 Purpose Statement: Arts and Entertainment: The creative space requires bold and strategic agenda setters because it isn’t a neutral space.
Flight Prep: Introduction Scenario: You walk into your house and find the househelp watching TV and your 6 year old and 9
year old dancing to the lewd music videos on show. What would you do – switch of the TV, get rid of the TV, allow only the househelp, talk to the children, fire the househelp, or discipline the children?

The passage: Read Matthew 10:1-42 People & Places: Look at Matt 10:16. In what ways does this passage relate to Jesus sending
Christians into our world today? What do you think the picture of sheep among wolves mean? Why would Jesus use the shrewdness of snakes as an example? How do shrewdness and innocence go together?
The Issues: How can we be shrewd when it comes to media and entertainment? What would innocence look like in our households and workplaces in the area of media engagement?
Closer look: What are the qualities that Jesus is pointing to when he refers to snakes and doves?
How do these apply in the area of media and entertainment?
Working on it: What is one area you feel you have been unwise with regard to engaging media in your life? In what ways have you lacked the innocence of a dove in this discussion?
Memorize this:
Matt 10:16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”

Week 4 Purpose Statement: Family and Education: The future of the nation is secured by an intentional engagement.
Flight Prep: Introduction Story: “The traditional idea of family is changing. This will affect the next generation in profound
ways.” In addition to traditional and single parent families we now have other types of relationships fronted as legitimate families. These include gay families and civil unions, open marriages, trial marriages and various combinations of the above.
Runway: Before digging in
Discuss the positive and negative ways in which the changes in family structures are affecting our children today? What do you think will be the impact of this in the future?
Take off: Dig in
Background: The passage is a part of Moses’ last communication to Israel about securing their
future with God on their side. He wrote the book of Deuteronomy like an agreement between God and his people.
The passage: Deutronomy 11:16-21 16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. 17 Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you. 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth. People & Places: Who do you think this passage was written for within the Israelite community? What assumptions does the passage seem to make about family? What are the implications of this passage on the transfer of knowledge [education] to the next generation?
The Issues: Family and education lie at the core of the progress of any society. In what ways can the values and ideas of this passage be passed on in a secular society like ours today? Closer look: In this passage, what was Moses saying about the connection between family and education? How does this apply today? Week 5 Purpose Statement: Politics and Governance/Justice: Seek the well-being of the society and release.
Flight Prep: Introduction Story: Who is your ward representative? What do you know about him or her? Where are their offices? Is this information freely available to you say online?
Runway: Before digging in
The problems in our society have political roots. For good or ill, governance in the nation has been devolved to very small units that are empowered to make financial and infrastructure decisions at the lowest level. What are some of the issues in your estate that would benefit from more engagement with good leaders in your ward?

Background: This passage is a part of a speech and some prayers that Jeremiah gave to God’s
people who were going to go into exile. It was a time of great uncertainty these are the words the Prophet had for them.
The passage: Jer.29:7-12 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” 8 Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. 9 They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the Lord. 10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. People & Places: What are God’s expectations of his people in the society they live in? What is God’s promise to them?
The Issues: Jeremiah wrote these words to you today, adding proper names of places and people; what would he have substituted for the words “city”, “exile”, “prophets and diviners”, “dreams”, “Babylon”? With the new words, what do you feel the passage is saying to you?
Closer look: What does prosperity for the city you live in look like? What kinds of deception are found in the sector of politics and governance? Flight Prep: Introduction Story: David has been struggling in his contractor business in the last two years. This week an
opportunity came up for him to supply some materials for a big construction site. David wants it but suspects that he needs to give some non-receipted commission cash. He lets his friend James know about the deal. James has no issues doing what is needful to get his friend the deal.

Background: Parables are ‘teaching stories’ which Jesus used to pass on knowledge to his disciples. This passage is one such teaching story.
The passage: Lk.12:42-8 42 The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour, he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. 47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. People & Places: Parables are ‘teaching stories’ which Jesus used to pass on knowledge to his
disciples. Who is the master? Who is the servant? What is the big idea that Jesus is teaching his disciples in this parable? How can this idea be applied in the area of business in the work we do?
The Issues: What in this passage guides the ethics we use in the work that we do? If the ‘master’ in the passage represents God, what is God’s expectation of his people and what they do?

Week 7 Purpose Statement: Health and Environment: God’s fullness and well-being on personal and environmental health is our extended responsibility.
Flight Prep: Introduction Story: The compound cleaner where you live came to work yesterday but left early before he fin-
ished work. The reason is that he had a massive asthma attack because of garbage being burned in the neighbouring compound. This is a routine exercise that happens every week in that compound to get rid of their waste. The cleaner also could not find a hospital he could afford near the estate because all of them are private and cost more than he can pay. As a result, he didn’t come to work today.

Background: This passage is the opening letter of a letter which Paul wrote to the Christians in
a cosmopolitan city of Colossae. The letter teaches the audience to be faithful, practical Christians who have an effect on each other and in the environment they work.
The passage: Col 1:15-20 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. People & Places: Who are the characters mentioned in this passage? How do they relate with each other? Who and how does God reconcile the world back to himself?

Background: Jesus often used word pictures to illustrate a point. Sometimes he used more than one-word picture to emphasize a particular lesson for his listeners. This is one such triad of word pictures.
The passage: Matt 5:13-16 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. People & Places: What is the function of salt in food? What do you think Jesus means when he
calls his people salt of the earth? What is the function of light? Jesus refers to a town on a hill. What is he trying to tell us?

Appendix 1 FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS Communion notes Holy Communion is a special symbolic meal we share as Christians to celebrate our faith and to affirm our commitment to Jesus Christ at the centre of all we believe. The actual Communion event is a short service we have just before the Life group discussion of the day. The communion day meeting needs to be held in someone’s home or any quiet place where you can do this without interruptions.
