COUNTER-BALANCING AND WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE IT A TRY I get this question a lot; why don’t you talk about counter-balancing? Actually, I do talk about counterbalancing in my videos. In fact, I also demonstrate it in my New Ride Like a Pro video. What I don’t do is include counter-balancing in the three techniques, which of course are, the proper use of your head and eyes, the friction zone and the rear brake. It’s been my experience that once a rider gets comfortable with the three techniques, counter-balancing will come about naturally or instinctively. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term “counter-balancing”, it simply means shifting your weight to the high side of the motorcycle when the bike is leaning. Shifting your weight to the high side gives your bike a little more lean angle before scraping the pegs or the floorboards. For most situations while maneuvering the bike at low speeds, to counter-balance, all you need do is shift your shoulders to the high side while letting the bike lean under you. For extremely tight turns, as in police style motorcycle rodeos or when practicing 18’ turns on a heavyweight bike, you’ll find it helpful to actually shift your butt off the seat to the high side. You can practice this technique of shifting to the extreme, even if you’re not leaning the bike to its lean limits. All you need to do is make some big figure 8’s at 10 or 15 mph and shift your butt off the seat to the right when turning left and quickly to the left side when turning to the right. The most important thing is to TURN YOUR HEAD AND EYES to the extreme at the same time you’re shifting your weight. The tighter the turn you are trying to make, the faster and further you’ll want to turn your head and eyes. Remember, at high speeds it’s the opposite. About 30 mph or higher, you’ll want to lean with the bike. At the same time, you must keep your head and eyes level with the horizon. If you lean your head with the bike, you’ll find yourself getting vertigo and that will cause you to quickly lose control. If you’ve ever watched motorcycle racing, you’ve seen the riders leaning so low off the bike their knees are scraping the ground. If you’re trying to do that on a heavyweight motorcycle, you’re on the wrong bike. In closing, give counter-balancing a try. It’s fun and it will help improve your low speed skills. Till next month, get out there and practice. Jerry “Motorman” Palladino

Yeah yeah yeah, you’ve all heard me say this before. Thankfully I really am becoming more aware of how, when, and who I ride with. As part of the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) group at USF along with the FDOT and Ride Smart Florida organization I and others are also looking at why people crash, and could those crashes have been prevented or lessened in anyway. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. We all know what can happen if we lose focus for a moment or two while we are riding. The potential for devastating consequences happens fast and be can horrific. It can happen to new riders as well as old time riders with hundreds of thousands of miles under their belts. Crashes can also be result of someone being collected in someone else’s stupidity through no fault of your own. Case in point, my youngest daughter Nikki has been riding for about 7 years now. She started off in Sport Bikes and has graduated to Cruisers. She has had 2 horrific potentially life ending motorcycle crashes thru absolutely no fault of her own. First one she was a passenger on a sport bike whose rider was going too fast for conditions causing a single vehicle motorcycle crash where she was thrown off the bike she was on, the second crash she was stopped in front of her house waiting to turn left into her driveway when a vehicle with a distracted driver ran into her from behind at a very high rate of speed vaulting her up and over the car he was in and totaling her HD sportster. Both times she was unfortunately collected up in someone else’s mistakes. It happens, but the question has been asked could anything have been done to change the outcome of either of these incidents? Probably not. When looking at data gathered in in fatal motorcycle crashes by the Florida Department of Transportation some of the big items looked at are who was at fault, how many vehicles were involved, where did it happen, and was weather and or alcohol a factor? As we all ride around Florida each and every day, we see examples of three of the biggest kinds of crashes studied by various groups looking to see if they can determine what happened, why, and how can we change the outcomes in the future. They big three are, Left – Turn crashes, this is where you are riding along and someone makes a left-hand turn in front of the motorcycle and bam someone is impacting the vehicle as it crosses their path. The second one is Rear-End Crashes; you are riding along, and someone slams into the back of you. Mostly this happens when something happens in front of you, you see it and react to it and the person behind you doesn’t. Somewhat surprisingly is the large number of these accidents where the rider is struck from behind by a fellow rider who did not react quickly enough, correctly or you the rider lose focus for a moment and crash into the rider or vehicle in front of you. And the third one of these is single vehicle crash on a curve. The first two examples are us the riders being collected up by someone else’s mistakes as was the case with my daughter Nikki. This one is all on us, this is what I was talking about when I said we lose focus for one split second and it could have devastating consequences. Usually it is a result of carrying too much speed into a corner resulting in the rider and the bike leaving the road surface and end up off the road.
36
Now the big question, can any of these incidents be avoided or lessened, and if so, how? There is no simple answer to this, but as riders there are a few things we can do to help mitigate situations. One of the simplest things we as riders can do is we have to get out of the habit of wearing all dark clothing, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. I myself understand this and like the look of dark clothing, it looks cool, it doesn’t show dirt, its leather. BUT if we want to help ourselves stay alive, we need to get into the habit of wearing bright reflective clothing when we ride. We need to do whatever we can to make ourselves visible to other vehicles. The second and possibly more important thing is continued training. Not just the basic riding course we all have to take to get a new rider’s endorsement, but an advanced riders’ course by a certified riding school. These schools and advanced riders’ courses are invaluable. They will not only help you make the right decision; they will also help you more importantly execute the right decision the correct way helping to keep you safe. Here is an example of what I am saying, a rider sees a vehicle is about to turn left and potentially cross their path in front of them. You the rider recognize that there is sufficient distance to slow down and avoid hitting the vehicle and decide it that split decision to apply the brakes, which is the correct decision for the situation, however you in that split second fail to brake properly, lose control of the bike and crash. That is where that advanced rider course can be a big help in helping you make not only the correct decision but how to execute that correct decision properly. The course will teach you to search for these threats to your safety, how to not only choose the correct escape path but teach you how to be aware and always have an escape path, how to ride in control of not only your bike but also the situation you are riding in. As someone who has been riding for more years than I care to state with hundreds of thousands of miles under my belt, I thought I knew all there was to know about riding. This thought process put me into the same category as most experienced riders. My confidence in my ability was way overstated as I found out by taking my advanced riders’ course. From basic skills to learning how to handle debris on the roadway in a turn, to proper decision making and execution. I learned not only how to keep myself, but my passenger, and those riding with me safe by deciding to take that advanced rider’s course. I cannot stress how important these classes can be to help keeping you alive. In an effort to help you take an advanced rider course the FDOT, and the Motorcycle Safety Coalition will be offering to help offset the cost of an advanced riders course for those riders who reside in the top 10 counties with the highest amount of fatal crashes. This will be offered during Motorcycle Safety Month in May. We will also be talking about the new Riders Safety Course going to be offered by the Tampa Police Department. We will have all the details available in Full Throttle Magazine in the April addition. For now, Ride Safe.

Greeting to all. As we embark on another year of family, life, and riding I cannot help but think of all of the brave men and women in uniform that are supporting and defending our rights and freedoms each and every day. As a retired veteran I often reflect on the life that I once lived, day after day waking up, shaving my face, putting my uniform on, and kissing my family goodbye. It is these days that I miss more often than not. For those of you who have walked in those shoes you understand what it is to do those things, over and over again with pride, dignity, and loyalty to our great nation. There are not many more things in life that I can say have given me more pleasure than that. To wake up every day knowing that what I, along with every one of my fellow military members are doing to provide a stable and peaceful environment for our country, is so absolutely rewarding. So, to those of you who today carry on that great tradition I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Let us never forget the sacrifices that these men and women do on a daily basis so we can sleep soundly at night. I challenge each and every one of you out there to thank a service member and veteran. This is not a requirement by any means, but a way to simply say thank you for allowing me the ability to live my life freely, openly, and without fear each and every day.
I have thought of how we can pay it forward in 2020 and have come up with a few suggestions. What I would like to see as a challenge within our motorcycle community is to pay forward in one of the following ways:
• Buy a military members meal when they are in uniform. • Purchase some food, clothing, or essentials and donate them to a veteran organization (homeless or not). • Go to a senior center and simply share stories with a veteran. • Visit the children’s hospital and bring a toy, a game, a book to read a story, etc... • Participate in events such as Big Brother / Big Sister organizations. • Find a personal way to share your time and make a memory with children and veterans. If each and every one of us within our community could make one child, one service member, or one veterans day better, then we all prosper, we all win. Our motorcycle community is strong in numbers, strong in giving, and most importantly strong in care for others. We show up to a poker run/gathering for someone we never have even met just to donate our time, our money, to support those individuals. For this I thank you all, and look forward to you continued support in 2020. I am proud to be a member of this great community, as well should you. Thank you, David Moss, for sharing this great event with us. It was great to see so many of our friends out at Gibtown Bikefest enjoying the great food, vendors, and music. Bike nights have been a little scarce these past couple of months, so we are working to bring them back in full. Keep your eyes open on our Facebook page “Florida Full Throttle Magazine” for updates as events are added. Lastly, make sure that you take time this month to share your love with your significant others as we celebrate Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 14th. Erock out!!
