Fall is definitely in the air! The humidity seems to be backing down and the nights are becoming beautiful for riding! I can’t wait for it to get colder out for that perfect riding season we have here in Florida. Be sure to be safe while riding and watch out for the snowbirds and blue hairs that will be flocking to the area the next few months. They are not use to so many motorcycles on the roads, so they do not look for us. Ride both defensively and offensively when the time is right. Don’t sit in blind spots and be sure to keep your head on a swivel! We have lost too many bikers the past few years! This month is jam packed with events! We have Cotee River Bike Fest in New Port Richey Florida where JACKYL will be rocking the stage! There are always tons of vendors, bike shows, live music and the entire downtown area gets involved and there are some great restaurants and little bars to visit so be sure to do so! Also, Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach is in October as well. We will be hosting three different bike shows in Daytona this year. The first one is Thursday night at Grandview Live! This is a very fun NIGHTIME bike night! Of course, Grandview Live is an adult establishment so no kids are allowed. We usually have bikes out-front rockin their sound systems and people dancing and having a good time! Friday is one of the largest shows in Daytona and is called the Boardwalk Bike Show and happens at the end of Main Street Down on the Daytona Boardwalk. Early registration for the show will save you $5 and is only $20 from 8am till 10am, after that registration is $25. This show usually

8

has over 100 bikes entered in it and we give out 59 trophies and best in show wins $500 also! Our Third show is at the Daytona International Speedway on Saturday. This also has a $500 prize for best in show and 10 classes with trophies for 1st and 2nd place. For info on any of our bike shows please call us at 727-935-4875 or check out the ads in this month’s magazine! The Expo is coming along nicely, and we are in the process of booking our national acts for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Florida Motorcycle Expo will be 5 days and will be back at Bert’s Barracuda Harley-Davidson’s new property across the street from Quaker Steak and Lube. The dates will be Wed Feb 5th thru Sunday Feb 9th . You may have noticed that there is an admission charge this year for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Yes, this must happen as we are bringing in national bands for you to enjoy along with the Bike Builder Invitational, $100 an hour cash give-a-way, the chance to win a custom motorcycle and much more! Our show has been free for a long time and if you want to come and not pay admission, Sunday of the Expo is a FREE ADMISSION DAY! But I promise you, when we announce the national bands, you will not want to miss that party! The band announcement should be in October as soon as we can lock them in. Stay tuned to our Facebook page as we will live stream the national band announcement very soon!!! The ticket prices will be per day or a 3-day pas (Thus – Sat) for $50 and that will include a refillable beer mug during the event and an event t-shirt while supplies last! We are also looking for vendors and sponsors for the Expo so contact us if you are interested at 727935-4875 I would like to welcome all of our new advertisers to the magazine this month, you may have noticed this month’s magazine is full of new ads and advertisers! Full Throttle does all we can to make sure the magazine is read both the printed copy and online. You can always read our magazine online for free at www.floridafullthrottle.com. I hope everyone has a great month and remember, don’t drink and ride, and I’ll see you in Daytona!

Harley’s New Hi-tech System on the 2020 Touring Bikes In case you haven’t heard, the 2020 Harley Davidson’s were released August 10th, minus the usual fan fair. I say minus the usual fan fare because usually, Harley-Davidson makes a big deal of their model releases. Generally, they do so at Sturgis or at their dealer meetings with announcements from a stage complete with fancy lighting and a dramatic ride onto the stage via some celebrity. Oddly, nothing like that happened at the Vegas dealer meeting this year. Does that mean Harley-Davidson had nothing worthwhile to brag about? Or, was it just due to cutbacks or a shift in funding to TV advertisement? I’m not sure, however, I believe Harley-Davidson does have something to brag about and this is the availability of the Reflex Defensive Rider System, or, R.D.R.S for short. This system is an option on all touring models, standard on the CVO and the Police motorcycles. What is it, and what does it do for almost a thousand extra bucks? In short, it’s a life saver. I’ll start with the cornering ABS portion of the R.D.R.S. While anti-lock brakes (ABS) have been available as an option on all Harley’s for some years, for the rider to take advantage of ABS in an emergency, the rider would have to first straighten up the motorcycle to perform maximum braking. If the rider straightened up the bike first, ABS would stop the tires from locking up and causing a loss of control. With the new system of cornering ABS, if the rider has the bike in a full lean in a curve, the rider can clamp down on both brakes and the R.D.R.S. system will prevent the tires from losing traction, locking up, and low sliding. The rider can then straighten the bike while braking with full force. This is a life saver. Especially, since failure to negotiate a curve is the most common motorcycle crash that involves just the rider. In a case where a rider is going too fast for his/her skill level, in a curve, or, if the rider is met with an obstacle while rounding a blind curve; in years past, the rider would either run off the road, or brake too hard and low side onto the ground. Cornering ABS prevents this type of crash. Of course, while ABS is extremely helpful in this situation, it can’t make up for a rider’s stupidity as in, if the rider is going so fast around a curve that the bike is leaning so much that hard parts are dragging; the tires can still be levered off the ground. Once the tires are no longer in contact with the road, no technology is going to help. You will crash. What else can R.D.R.S. do for you? Let’s say the ground is wet or you hit a patch of sand as you’re about to take off from a stop and making a turn. If you give the bike a bit too much throttle or let the clutch out a little too fast, the system prevents the rear tire from braking loose and spinning. Another nice feature of the system is if you’re stopped on a hill, you can simply apply either brake hard so the bike will not roll backwards. As soon as you feed a little throttle and begin to release the clutch, the brakes will automatically release and you’re on your way. The traction control also has a rain mode. In wet conditions, the system will give more rider assist than in dry conditions. Now, if you’re the type who likes to do burnouts, traction control can be turned off with the push of the switch. Since I have a 2020 with the R.D.R.S., I can attest that it does work as advertised. Under normal riding conditions, you won’t even notice any difference with R.D.R.S. It’s only there when you need it, and that’s as it should be. Yes, I’m aware that BMW and other manufacturers have had a similar system for a couple of years, I believe Harley is the first to offer this tech on a cruiser, touring motorcycle. Till next time, keep your head and eyes UP and the rubber side down. “Motorman”www.ridelikeapro.com

10 years ago, Tampa Bay Solar’s founder and retired Navy Seal Commander Steve Rutherford embarked on a mission. He wanted to make a positive impact in the Tampa Bay region and he’s doing that with solar panels. His mission employs over 40 individuals who not only share his vision but whom are mostly veterans themselves. Veteran craftmanship performed to Navy Seal standards is what sets T.B.S apart. To-date, T.B.S has completed over 500 residential installs and some of the largest corporate installations in the state. It’s safe to say, Tampa Bay Solar is doing exactly what Steve set out to do. But it wasn’t always tales of business success. Steve began installing Solar panels in Afghanistan. He did so, so that forward operating bases could reduce their dependency on regular deliveries of diesel fuel. This may sound environmental, but it was very personal. Convoy drivers in Afghanistan regularly found themselves on the receiving end of Improvised Explosive Devices, something that sat well with no one, especially Commander Rutherford. To reduce the need for fossil fuels by installing solar was to reduce service personnel’s exposure to road side bombs. There’s no telling how many lives were saved by Steve’s team installing over 600 Kilowatt hours of solar in an active war zone, but I imagine that, if the United States Military trusts Commander Steve Rutherford’s expertise in all things Solar, you can to. Contact me today and schedule your free estimate. 40

As I sit here on the first day of Fall the weather is beautiful. This means one thing. The license plate colors are about to change with the snowbirds on the way. From the looks of things, the cooler weather might just get here a little early this year. The riding is sure to be wonderful. We are going into season and will see a lot more motorcycles on the road. Remember to look twice people. So tired of seeing our brothers and sisters plastered all over face book in hospital beds. Another thing fall means is Biketoberfest is just around the corner. looking so forward to the bike shows and seeing all my friends from other states. If you’re in Daytona for Biketoberfest, come see us on Thursday night at Grand View Live. We will be doing a bike show out front from 7pm till midnight. If you have been to these, you know what a good time they are. Friday morning, we set up on the board walk for the big Board Walk bike show. This is the

biggest show in Daytona. If your entering a bike come early so you get a good spot. Then Saturday is off to the Track for the speedway show. This one is always good. We set up next to the stage beside the pavilion. October also brings a lot of great bike nights along with Cotee River Bike fest. This is always a good time. I look forward to seeing you all at all these great events. There is always something to do in the Full Throttle Family. Likes always. Ride Safe and be Free. The Elite Technologies (formerly Yelvington USA) reverse pulley for all Harley Touring models (2009-current) allows the rider to reverse the bike WITHOUT modification to engine or transmission. All you need to do is replace your stock pulley and axle with our mechanical reverse pulley (MRP). We also add a small air compressor module which is mounted in the right saddlebag. Here’s how it works step-by-step: 1. With the bike stopped, the rider shifts to neutral and presses the designated Harley accessory button or switch (depending on model/year). A beep sound is heard. 2. The rider shifts into first gear. 3. While controlling clutch and throttle, the rider reverses the bike. 4. After finishing reverse, rider shifts back to neutral and turns off button/switch. 5. Rider shifts into first gear and rides like normal. You might ask, “How’s this possible?” Our patented MRP works on the principle of planetary gearing. Normally, the reverse pulley is fixed and drives the bike forward, just like your stock pulley. But when the gearbox is shifted to neutral, the MRP can be “unlocked” and made to counter-rotate. This means you’ll have the same power and gear ratio you normally experience in forward used to turn the rear wheel in reverse. Seeing this demonstrated usually attracts attention, but the real innovation is how to lock or unlock the pulley. This is accomplished using a spline engagement in the pulley hub. The MRP axle has a hollow core with a spring loaded piston. When air pressure is applied from a pump, the axle piston moves a gear that unlocks the pulley, allowing it to counter-rotate. When air pressure is removed, the spring forces the piston to lock position for forward travel. There are two safety features built in to the MRP. First, the wiring harness for the air compressor connects to the neutral sender switch on the gearbox. The pump will not operate unless neutral is ON. This means the unit won’t turn on if the button is pushed accidentally while the bike is

50

in gear. The harness also has a sounder to remind the rider the designated button/switch is turned on. The MRP kit comes with everything you need except for a Harley Davidson accessory switch kit. Depending on the year and model of your touring bike, you may or may not have and accessory switch. Most newer bikes are pre-wired for accessories but have blank slots where accessory switches can be added. Most bikes 2013 and prior come with an accessory switch and plug already installed. When used in reverse, the MRP is designed to be used for slow or walking speed. It can easily handle grades, gravel or soft ground. Installation can be done by a trained mechanic or an owner with the appropriate mechanical ability and proper equipment. All air and electrical connections are waterproof and have a quick-disconnect. Installation instructions are available online along with video tutorials. Of course, we’re available to answer questions by phone. The MRP is manufactured and assembled at our facility in Clearwater, Florida. Here’s a recent review that sums it up best: I had the reverse installed in Daytona March 2018 on my 2017 Ultra Limited. No, I'm not weak legged, or feeble in any way. But this would have been a great solution for that if I was. I'm short, 5'5" tall. I can lift a rhinoceros, but I simply have no "leverage" to push a 950 pound motorcycle backwards up hills etc. I waited until now to provide a review so that I had ample time to experience the product under many different circumstances. Well... it's everything the company says it is!! It works great and is simple and easy to operate. I have used it more than I ever thought I would. I really enjoy parking where ever I want! LOL. The guys at Elite are very customer-service oriented and have answered every question I have ever had and have returned every call I made to them promptly. I recently had to replace my rear tire so I simply brought the Yelvington installation instructions with me to the Harley Davidson dealer and they had absolutely no problem figuring taking it apart and putting it back together again. In fact they were so impressed with the product that they will be offering it as an option to their customers. So if you are looking for a great reverse product that is "super discrete" (works off the accessory button on your dash) and non-mechanically invasive to your transmission or motor components, then this is it. -Mark F.

We are interested in bringing something new, different, or even nostalgic back to our community.

Dead on Red Law. Here are the facts I had the opportunity to attend the August meeting of the Motorcycle Safety Coalition held at the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) on the USF Campus in Tampa. This was a two-day meeting run by the State of Florida Department of Transportation. This group focuses on issues pertaining to Motorcycle Safety in the State of Florida and is made up of representative from Florida DOT, Law Enforcement, a Traffic Court Judge, Motorcycle Manufacture representatives, Rider Training Schools, different Rider groups such as SunCoast BrotherHood, Gold Wing Riders Association, ABATE of Florida, Traffic Engineers and Transportation planning folks. One of the discussions at this meeting was the “Dead on Red” issue of waiting at a traffic signal to make a left hand turn, and your perception that you and your bike have NOT been sensed by the traffic signal. We have all been there and have had similar experiences. We have all heard the myths of to how make it easier for your bike to be detected by the traffic systems detection unit. Fact is, 99% of what you have been told is just that, a Myth. The Florida DOT folks who were at the meeting went into great detail how the system detects your bikes presence at a traffic signal. After their explanations of how and why you are detected it makes absolute sense. When I tell you, these folks are Rocket Scientists, I am not overstating their qualifications. The detection devices that are in ground detection loops and microwave sensing devices are reliable. The Florida DOT has designed and built a test facility with actual roadways and traffic signals in Tallahassee. In addition to the actual roadways and traffic signals the systems have built in data test capability to test the functionality of the signals and software that runs the various detection and sensing systems. The biggest

60

factor of how long you will be at a signal is at what time in the traffic timing cycle you arrived at the signal. There is a complicated formula that goes into triggering the turn signal. Also factored into the equation is the number of lanes and traffic at that intersection. Based on all the data presented, waiting to get a green indication at signals may take up to 3 minutes or more depending on the size of the intersection. Detection is almost immediate after the motorcycle arrives at the intersection stop bar and close to, or on top, of the loop detector (See Diagrams). Again, it is based on your arrival at the signal, lanes of traffic, and amount of traffic at the time you arrived. A big factor that can help you be detected easier is where you stop your bike on or in the traffic detection loop. The below diagrams have been provided to me by the Florida DOT officials based on the research done at their testing facility and offer you the best and easiest chance of detection. These are the facts of how the systems work and how you and your bike are detected. I know when you’re riding and its 90 degrees out and you’re waiting for a light to change it seems like an eternity. The only 2 legal options you have to make that turn is to wait for a light to give you the right of way or flow back into traffic and make a U-TURN at the next cross over and come back to turn. If you know of a traffic signal that continues to cause issues take the time to report it to the proper agency, be it city, county or state traffic bureaus. We all want to make riding safer in the State of Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation is doing as much as they can to help with that goal. It is up to you the rider to make the smart decision as to how you ride. John Makal SunCoast Brotherhood Legislative Trustee
