Stop using the rear brake? If you want to get really good at low speed maneuvers, as I’ve said many times, you must become proficient with using the friction zone of the clutch. That of course is the gray area between where power begins to be transferred to the rear wheel, and when the clutch is fully engaged or released. At low speeds, you must use that gray area known as slipping the clutch. The point is to coordinate the clutch and throttle so that only the amount of power needed is transferred to the rear wheel. Having the ability to use the friction zone skillfully gives you precise control of your bike even at a slow walking pace. Combining a little pressure on the rear brake while in the friction zone make low speed handling on even the biggest, heaviest, motorcycle a breeze. Throw in head and eyes, i.e., looking only where you want to go, and you’re riding like a PRO. How much pressure do you need on the rear brake? Well, there are too many variables to give a definitive answer to that question. But, there is a way to find out exactly how much rear brake you need and that is, no brake at all. Start by doing the slow race in a straight line as slow as possible using just the friction zone. Next, try weaving back and forth at 8 to 10 mph while turning the bars aggressively so the bike almost hits the pegs or floor boards as the bike dips from side to side. If you set up five or six cones in a straight line at 12’ apart, simply weave through them using just the friction zone at 8 to 10 mph. Keep your foot poised over the rear brake so it’s there if you need it. Next, try some U-turns in three parking spaces with no rear brake and friction zone only. Eventually, you should be able to U-turn in two parking spaces without using the rear brake. When you can do that, you have really mastered the clutch and throttle and you’ll know how little rear brake you need to be and expert at low speeds. You’ll never again have to duckwalk or drag your feet like some sort of doofus. Jerry “Motorman” Palladino www.ridelikeapro.com

I thought it would be great to use a live example of someone we have helped over the years. The following story really touches my heart with a client and fellow rider I met about a year ago. I have changed his name and some of the numbers of the principal to protect our client but it is a very real client and I see this over and over again. John came in to my office and I spoke with him about a year ago. After our meeting I asked John to go home and gather anything that related to his financial situation and we would look at it on our next meeting. At the very minimum I would help him understand what risk he might be facing including not earning anything on his money or outliving what he had. John told meat our next meeting, that he had inherited some money and they were still in the accounts he had inherited from his family and was living alone with his children and grandchildren living all over the country but not here. He was living only on his social security and was barely getting by. When he did need money he took some from one of the accounts he inherited. He had not brought stacks of statements to me that he did not understand nor did he want to. He was retired and wanted to be riding his motorcycle or kayaking at the beach. John was very young for a 70 year old. He was kayaking every day, riding his motorcycle and venturing out to meet all his friends whenever he could afford to. I looked at John’s accounts that he thought he had about $350,000.00 in and quickly realized he had about $850,000.00 at the current market value of his investments. Most of his parent’s money had been invested in the stock and bond markets and over the years had grown significantly. He was not aware as most people are not as to how to read and value the information and it was at many different firms and banks. The other thing that jumped off the page was the risk he was taking in the type of investments they were in and like most the interest was accumulating in an account that was not giving him any interest. He also did not have a will, power of attorney or health care power of attor-

30

ney so his family would have had a very difficult time in helping him if he needed it or if something happened to him I also knew that we were in a cycle of the markets that would probably create a great loss for him in the types of accounts he was holding if we had a downturn in the economy The other thing that jumped completely off the page during my review was the enormous loss of income this man was losing. So I sat John down and we discussed his affairs and I explained in detail what he currently owned and how it worked. He had 10 different accounts. Last, I explained to John he would have only one account and that account would give him an income of over 5% for the rest of his life and pass directly to his beneficiaries at his death. I also explained he could decide how he could also name some of his beloved charities he wanted to receive monies at the end of his life. We also sent him to an attorney to have his will made and a power of attorney drafted in the event he needed it and guided him on how to make those decisions John was so very happy. After about a month, I called John back in to my office. I explained to John that he no longer had to worry about the markets or money He was so very happy. He had one account, one person to call with questions and never dreamed that he could get that much income. All of his affairs were in order and he now has a will, a power of attorney and peace of mind. I continue to get phone calls emails and little visits from John saying he was enjoying life so much more now. He would tell me of visits he could now take to visit his grandchildren and that when his daughter came to visit he took them all to Disneyworld or that he could go buy the seafood he loved or go out to eat whenever he wanted with his friends. This is what makes everything I do and all 30 + years in this business worthwhile.. Thank you John for also giving me the gift of knowing we changed a wonderful person’s life and touched your family in so very many ways. One Year Anniversary - June is here and so is my one year Anniversary at Full Throttle Magazine., and I have to say I really had no idea what I was thinking when I approached the owner (Tony Cianci, who I have now nicknamed Bossman!) and said I would like to do some pics for the magazine. Pictures were definitely all I had in mind but he came back at me and said "Sell some ads and we will take it from there". Tony was and is very approachable so it was easy to agree to this. And as the months started to pass and the events started popping up, I agreed to go part-time and help out wherever I could. But this 36 yr old guy whose ideas pop up like a Florida storm had other ideas. He was planning some pretty big events and wanted me to hop on board full time. All I kept saying to myself was, "I'm retired. I'm retired", And I told Tony that over and over, But his ideas and his ambition were hard to ignore. I was very hesitant but so many people along the way encouraged me to do this, so I hopped on board

and here I am. What a year it has been, Bike nights, bike week, benefits, food drives, you name it Full Throttle is there. I don't think I would have joined this team if it weren't for all the good things I see that come from this magazine. And the people you meet along the way, Priceless is the only word I can think of. Celebrities, Rock Stars, Custom designers, and the countless faces I now

call friends and family. This has been a job that is exciting, exhausting, busy and on the few days that we might have a little boredom, there's always THE NERF GUN FIGHTS!!! I will say I do have them all beat on the target shooting LOL.. But in the end it's very rewarding. These coming months will prove to be very exciting with some of the things we are planning. So I just want to give a big shout out to my Full Throttle Team and say Thank You, I'm looking forward to the next year with everyone. And a big Thanks to all my friends and family who have encouraged me along the way, you all know who you are, BIG HUGS Love yas all.... CONNIE, KEEP LIVIN LIFE FULL THROTTLE!!!!!!!! 33

WOW, what a month this has been! We have been wide open here at Full Throttle. With so many events and things to do. We had a bike day at Get Hooked Bar and Grill with Midget wrestling and a bike show. What a good time. Last month we went to a party for Burt’s Barracuda in Leesburg and seen the most awesome band ever. We met all them and hit it off right away. We endorsed and sponsored them as our Full Throttle Band. They Are Straitjacket Smile and they will blow the roof off anywhere they are. There is an updated list of their tour dates in this month’s magazine. The bike nights have been off the chart and the party has been rolling on. Thank you to everyone that comes out and supports Full Throttle and all of our Endeavors. I would like to change gears a bit and let everyone know about Pinellas Hope. It is a homeless shelter started by Catholic Charities off 126th Ave. north not too far behind Quaker Steak and Lube. Long story short. I had stopped in a station to get a soda off 4th and Gandy. There is where I saw a sign on the counter about this place and helping them

40

out. That's when I was l lead to Krystal Vanarsdale. Krystal is a special lady. She had taken on an astronomical task herself to help out the center. After talking to her a little bit, I knew right away we needed to get involved and help her out. I set up a meeting at the center and they gave me a tour. Let me tell you. It really makes you appreciate what you got. There is over 180 people at the center at any given time just trying to put their lives back together. So many of us come to Quaker on Wednesday and don't even know the center is right there and what these people go through. We have put together a benefit for the Center on July the 22nd at Quaker Steak and Lube. From 12:00 to close. We are going on a nice ride down to Burt's Barracuda HarleyDavidson and then out to Clearwater Beach and back to Quaker. We are taking donations for a live auction and having great music the rest of the day into the evening. Come on out and have some fun and let's help them out. They are in need of a little bit of everything. The benefit add is on the next page. Put it in your calendar. Once again thank you all for supporting us. Till next time, be free and ride safe.

Welcome to a hot Back Yard. Summer is here and bikes are out in force here in Florida. Loads of bike night all thru the Central Florida area so get out there and ride. May was a busy month here in the back yard. Hell, I didn’t even have time to mow the yard. The month started off in Panama City Beach FL with the annual Thunder Beach Spring Rally. Again, I was honored to host Boardwalk Beach Resort. We rocked the House with bands such as Southern Rocks Finest, Judas Maiden, and Highway to Hell. Thursday was a little ruff as mother nature came a calling but after that the sun came out and it was a great weekend. Be sure and make your plans to join 44

me for the Thunder Beach Fall Rally at Boardwalk Beach Resort this coming October. Make your reservations today. Then it was off to Myrtle Beach and my first trip the Myrtle Beach Bike Week. We started off all set up at Suck Bang Blow but then I spent rest of the rally visiting all the great bike venues and taking in the great things to do in Myrtle Beach. Thank you to everyone that came out for both these great events. Well, ride safe everyone. Look twice, Bikes are everywhere. And remember Always keep your stick on the ice. MONGO

Looking forward to the tons of events we have on the schedule for June! Tony and I will be heading down to Miami for the 3rd Annual Bikes on the Beach, then heading north to St. Augustine for the 20th Annual Soaked and Sore Ass Ride, all of this in addition to our numerous bike night events throughout the area. My wife and I recently made a quick weekend trip down to Key West, promoting our Peterson’s Poker Run Event Guide, it has been well received, and gave us an opportunity to meet some great local people and find some new local businesses along the route. For more information on the Event Guide or how to have your business featured in it, please visit the FT website or call us here at the office. I’d like to say “congrats” to my two kids on finishing the school year, in addition to Krysie graduating High School, a Happy Birthday to Ash, and wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s in my life! In a city park stood two statues, one female and the other male. These two statues faced each other for many years. Early one morning, an angel appeared before the statues and said, “Since the two of you have been exemplary statues and have brought enjoyment to many people, I am giving you your greatest wish. I hereby give you the gift of life. You have 30 minutes to do whatever you desire.” And with that command, the statues came to life, smiled at each other, ran toward some nearby woods and dove behind a couple of bushes. The angel smiled to himself as he listened to the two statues giggling, bushes rustling and twigs snapping. After 15 minutes, the two statues emerged from the bushes, smiling. Puzzled, the angel looked at his watch and asked the statues, “You still have 15 minutes. Would you like to continue?” The male statue looked at the female and asked, “Do you want to do it again?” Smiling, the female statue said, “Sure. But This time you hold the pigeon down and I’ll poop on it’s head!” ********************* Guy walks into a bar, notices a very large jar on the counter, and sees it's filled with $10 bills. He guesses there must be thousands of dollars in it. He approaches the bartender, "What's up with the jar?" The bartender replies "Well, you pay $10 and if you pass three tests, you get the money in the jar" The man certainly isn't going to pass this up. "What are the three tests?" "Pay first, thats the rule." says the bartender. So the guy gives $10 to the barkeep who puts it in the jar "OK," the bartender says. "Here's what you need to do: First, You have to drink that entire gallon of pepper tequila, the whole thing, all at once... and you can't make a face while doing it. Second, there's a pit bull chained-up out back with a sore tooth. Remove the tooth with your bare hands. Third. There's a 90-year old woman

50

upstairs who has never reached orgasm during intercourse. You've gotta make things right for her." The man is stunned. "I know I paid my $10, but I'm not an idiot, I won't do it! You have to be nuts to drink a gallon of pepper tequila, and then do those other things". "Your call," says the bartender, "but your money stays where it is." As the night drags on the man has a few drinks, then a few more. Finally he asks, "Wherez zat tequila?" He grabs the gallon with both hands and downs it with a giant slurp. Tears are streaming down both cheeks, but he doesn't make a face. Next, he staggers out back where the pit bull is chained-up and soon the people inside the bar hear a huge, noisy, scuffle. They hear the pit bull barking, the guy screaming, the pit bull yelping and then silence. Just when they think the man is surely dead, he staggers back into the bar, with his shirt ripped and large bloody scratches all over his body. "Now," he says. "Where's the old woman with the sore tooth?" **************** A big Texan stopped at a local restaurant following a day roaming around in Spain. While sipping his wine, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful. He asked the waiter, 'What is that you just served? They look like Spanish oysters!' The waiter replied, 'Senor, you have excellent taste! Those are not oysters... they are called Cojones de Toro, bull's testicles from the bull fight this morning. A rare delicacy!' The cowboy said, 'What the heck, bring me an order.' The waiter replied, 'I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bull fight each morning. Tomorrow, if you come early and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy.' The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed his order, and that evening was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, inspecting his platter, he called to the waiter and said, 'These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday.' The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, 'Si, Senor. Sometimes the bull wins and the man loses !' *****************

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper of 20 years, Guido, has cheated him out of $10 million. Guido is deaf which is why he got the job in the first place. The Godfather assumed that since Guido could not hear anything, he could never testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $10 million, he takes along his personal lawyer because he knows sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where the money is!" The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, "Where's the money?" Guido signs back, "I don't know what you are talking about." The lawyer tells the Godfather, "He says he doesn't know what you are talking about." The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido's head and says, "Ask him again or I'll kill him!" The lawyer signs to Guido, "He'll kill you if you don't tell him." Guido trembles and signs back, "OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno's house." The Godfather asks the lawyer, "What did he say?" The lawyer replies, "He says you don't have the balls to pull the trigger." ***************** A woman decided to have a face lift for her birthday. She spent $5000 and felt really good about the results. On her way home she stopped at a dress shop to look around. As she was leaving, she said to the sales clerk, "I hope you don't mind me asking, but how old do you think I am?" "About 35," was the reply. "I'm actually 47," the woman said, feeling really happy. After that she went into McDonalds for lunch and asked the order taker the same question. He replied, "Oh, you look about 29." "I am actually 47!" she said, feeling really good. While standing at the bus stop she asked an old man the same question. He replied, "I am 85 years old and my eyesight is going. But when I was young there was a sure way of telling a woman's age. If I put my hand up your skirt I will be able to tell your exact age." There was no one around, so the woman said, "What the hell?" and let him slip his hand up her skirt. After feeling around for a while, the old man said, "OK, You are 47." Stunned, the woman said, "That was brilliant! How did you do that?" The old man replied, "I was behind you in line at McDonalds."

The Death of HB 6009……Maybe, Maybe Not The email from the Florida Senate bill tracker web site simply said” HB 6009 Motorcycle Safety HOUSE-Indefinitely postponed and withdrawn from consideration “. Truth of the matter is this bill died after discussion in committee of what constitutes a legal helmet in the State of Florida. This bill in one form or another may come back again unless we the riding public come up with better ideas to keep riders safe, then convince our legislators they are better than a helmet law at reducing motorcycle fatalities. For now, we have been spared the Florida Legislatures poor attempt to help reduce the alarming increase of motorcycle deaths in the state. First off let’s make something clear. I am not against wearing a helmet. My youngest daughter is alive today only by the grace of God and the fact she was wearing not only a full faced helmet, but as equally important to her crash scenario full riding gear when she had a horrific crash a few years ago. What I and a lot of my fellow riders are against is the State of Florida trying to take away our right to choose if we will wear a helmet or not. Simple as that, they are trying to take away our freedom to choose. I have been riding motorcycles in one form or another for over 40 years. I have ridden 100s of thousands of miles in all riding conditions. What I have gained over those years and countless miles is a prospective both through my own eyes and those of my fellow riders on why we are dying in ever increasing numbers and what might be done to change that. Here are a few of those thoughts. Right now, the biggest danger out there is a danger to not only motorcyclists but also to pedestrians, someone walking or standing on a

sidewalk, or anyone in a car. That danger is distracted drivers, and the biggest contributing factor to those drivers are cell phones. Why is the state of Florida dragging its feet making someone talking or texting on a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle a primary offense? Give our law enforcement officers the ammunition they need to do something about this issues that effects ever man, woman, and child in the State of Florida. I feel that that this alone will do more for the reduction in motorcycle fatalities then a helmet law in any form. The next thought is why do we make some who is incased in thousands of pounds of metal on four wheels who has had to do real time learning experience on real roadways have a probationary period with restrictions, and yet someone on two wheels, no cage around them who may have 0 hours of actual riding experience on a real roadway is turned loose without any restrictions if they are over 21 years of age? Crazy, right? Here are some ideas on that subject. Why not make anyone attempting to obtaining a new motorcycle endorsement go thru a 6-month minimum probationary period that has a few restrictions, i.e., you have a probationary plate on your bike or scooters that identifies you to law enforcement that you are a probationary rider. You are not allowed to have any passengers during this probationary period. You MUST wear a helmet during your probationary period. You may not operate a motorcycle after a set night time period between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am. Violation of these restrictions during your probationary period may result in either loss of ability to obtain a motorcycle endorsement or an extension of the probationary period. Last but not least you must take a road test similar to an automobile road test before you are allowed to obtain a regular motorcycle plate and endorsement. You must prove that in that probationary

period you have become a competent rider less likely to injure yourself, your passenger, or your fellow riders. Funding for this program can be generated in a number of ways. First the cost of the probationary operator’s plate and permit. Second, let’s see the development of a motorcycle vanity plate for our automobiles touting motorcycle safety. Something on the order of “Look twice save a life” with a motorcycle motif. Funds generated from the sale of this plate could help offset the cost of setting up road test testing stations. Certainly, these ideas would help reduce not only heart ache we suffer when a loved one goes down and is injured or killed in a riding accident, but also the enormous costs incurred by local municipalities, insurance companies and the riders themselves on accident investigations and recovery involving motorcycle accidents and investigations. These ideas will make a real impact on rider education as well as overall motorcycle safety. In the area of cell phones and distracted drivers this would make a very real and significant reduction in overall traffic injuries and fatalities across the State of Florida. Last thought of the day, become involved, contact your local legislators, talk to them about what you think motorcycle safety should be like in the State of Florida, join an MRO (Motorcycle Rights Organization) such as Suncoast Brotherhood or any of the other MROs across the state fighting to make riding safer and enjoyable for all riders. “GREGG BILLINGS BAND” TOGETHER WE GOT SOUL LAURIE JO HIGGINS WITH GREGG BILLINGS Gregg Billings one of the Icons of Rock and Roll and to Florida a regular at many Bike nights/events, took the time to sit down and do a rare interview. He is a very friendly polite man, but on the private side. I had a hard time finding anything on the web, I like to google before an interview. (usually that stuff is wrong, The personal facts but gives me somewhere to start). He is working on a story with Hardrockdaddy. com that will take you from age 6 to his present. Look forward to reading it soon on their site or FB page. I was honored to be able to interview him for our readers , who are big fans I know. Gregg was born and raised in Winston-Salem NC until moving to Florida in 1979. His southern drawl not that apparent in his music, comes out when speaking with him, every question I asked was followed by a Yes ma’am. He was born the son of a Navy man, didn’t get to settle down in their first home until age 12 when his father retired from the Navy after 21 years of service. I asked about their relationship, he told me his father was his biggest critic which pushed him to try harder to succeed.” He was a good guy” Gregg told me. His Mother died young at age 66, Mother’s Day is still rough, she was a special lady, very special he said. She bought him his first guitar, arranged lessons and encouraged him. She had a love for playing piano which inspired him and was a big part of getting into in music. He is playing her favorite song at a an upcoming show, opening for “Sister Hazel” called “Kiss and Angel Good Morning” by Charlie Pride. He said “it may bomb with the crowd, but it won’t bomb for me, that’s how special she was to me” . He is most known for his time with the band “Stranger” who just celebrated 35 years with a reunion concert at Capital Theater. It was recorded live and a new album is in the finishing stages of editing, look for a release hopefully by July. Can’t wait! He plays currently with his band “The Gregg Billings Band” he formed after stranger, stays busy with his song writing, performances and many charity events. I see him at a lot of our Biker events, and asked if he rode, his answer “My wife said “absolutely not,” and plus I don’t think I am big enough to ride the Bike I would want to get!” He is so familiar and loved by the Biker community due to playing at one of the original Bike nights around way back then, called Gasoline Alley. It was during that time he played with “Damn the Torpedo’s” one of only three bands he has played in to date. He loves the Bikers and is sponsored by Fran Haasch whom we all know at the “Biker Attorney” ,Law Fran. In his off time he likes to cook, is the selfstated “chef of the house” loves eating healthy but can’t help himself when it comes to macaroni and cheese! Google has showed me so many variations , I love it he said. He works out 5 days a week, does a body pump class and has made a few friends there who hold him accountable when he misses,

62

I need a few of those friends I told him ! He is an avid golfer, all his life. I asked if he was any good, he said he carries a handicap of 11, “in other wards I am a little better than average.” He told me he does many charity Gold tournaments a year as well. I asked about other volunteer work, he said he plays numerous gigs for charity, but his favorite event has nothing to do with music, it is the “Fran Haasch food drive” each November where it is hard labor packing boxes and very rewarding to him. I asked about children, as again there is no interviews to draw from. He has a son named Austin, 27 who is in the medical filed he is very proud of. He adores his family, his beautiful wife “Tish” is the one he said.” It is his second and last marriage he told me. “She is it. It’s been 21 years with the right woman” he said. They share their home with their dog Betty Jo, and have always had a dog or a cat. They love animals. He is an avid Cubs fan, and loves baseball. During his years of touring with “Stranger” he told me every hotel had WGN and that’s all they watched. His wife Tish is a Chicago native and encouraged his favorite team, I liked them anyways as I played in Chicago many times, but she was passionate enough about the Cubs to make them my favorite too he told me. When asked about his bucket list, he laughed and said right now it is just to finish the new album. He has already done much in his 60 years. I asked him where he saw himself in 5 years, he said hopefully playing more acoustic only gigs, “that is something that is hard for me given my experience with Rock ad Roll, but I love it” as he strummed his guitar. He spends a lot of his time writing songs, instead of constant rehearsals, they are more songwriting sessions with his band. He would love to do more in the acoustic format in smaller venues. I asked what venue he has not played on his list, he has not played the Mid Florida Amphitheater and thinks that one would be very cool. No long bucket list, he is already living life the way he wants to. I asked him his music inspiration, he told me” J Giles Band”, Peter Wolfe gets me off my seat in particular. His favorite song if he had to pick on is “Good Loving Gone Bad” by Bad Company. He is partial to playing his song with Brian Johnson of AC/DC “Old friends don’t come easy, sometimes they don’t come at all”. He says the lyrics are symbolic of experiences he has had. The last question I asked was what was the funniest thing that has happened during your years of performing…he laughed and said Once he was playing a show in Gainesville FL and Tom Petty got up on stage and asked to Jam with him, Tom asked him to light his cigarette and he had to tell him it was backwards! He said there was no moments for me when my pants fell down or split, just once in great while I forgot the words to a song. He clearly has kept an even keel during his life, not succumbed to the lifestyle so many other musicians have. I think we can thank his Mama for that, she raised a true southern gentleman. Gregg has MANY upcoming shows in Florida, see his FB or web site for a long list “Gregg Billings Band” and look for him June 8th at New Port Richey Harley Davidson if your nearby . Thank you for sharing with myself and our readers Gregg!
