AGENDA: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 7 – 8 a.m. Registration & Networking
Application of SharePoint Workflows to Common Accounting Challenges Daniel Petersen, Director of Business Intelligence, Applied Tech
8 – 8:15 a.m. Welcome & Opening Remarks Jean M. Hansen, CPA, MBA, CGMA, WICPA Board Chair and Vice President of Finance, Manitowoc Tool & Machining LLC Katherine Hauser, CPA, CGMA, Controller, Price Engineering Company
8:15 – 9:30 a.m. GENERAL SESSION Market Perspectives: Global Market & Economic Review Sandy Lincoln, Chief Market Strategist, BMO Asset Management U.S. This opening session will provide insights on key economic and market indicators and activities that may affect your overall financial strategy.
9:30 – 9:50 a.m. Networking Break 9:50 – 10:50 a.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS Employee Benefit Trends & Strategies Post-Health Care Reform Scott K. Fuller, RHU, Senior Vice President, Benefits Practice Group Leader, Associated Financial Group Now that most of the major health care reform implementation dates have begun, this is a good time to sit back and think about other creative opportunities that may help cut costs and improve employees’ health and wellbeing. During this session we’ll discuss several ideas that may enhance your benefits strategy.
Motivating Millennials at Work Ward Alles, President, Core Creative, Inc. Join internal branding consultant Ward Alles in an entertaining and interactive discussion about working with that oh-so-mysteriousand-large people group: Generation Y aka Millennials. Discussion will include stereotypes about Millennials and whether they are true or just myths, comparisons of Millennials to other generations in the workforce and ways to inspire employees of ALL ages to focus on what they each have in common.
Across your business, teams use Microsoft SharePoint sites to collaborate on documents and share information. You want to build SharePoint solutions that improve the productivity and efficiency of your organization, but you don’t want to write code. Where do you start? With Microsoft SharePoint, you can design nocode workflow solutions that manage simple to more complex business processes in an organization. Workflows add logic to both system and human processes. Workflows for system processes might update one data source when another data source changes. Workflows for human processes might send a document, such as an expense report, to an employee’s manager for approval and, if approved, on to the accounting department for processing.
Taking Excel to the Next Level John H. Higgins, CPA, CITP, Strategic Technology Advisor, CPA Crossings, LLC This session will feature a lightning-round review and demonstration of various tips, tricks and techniques for building your spreadsheets faster, better and more accurately. Some of the topics to be covered include defined names, error checking tools, data validation, advanced formulas and more. Every Excel user is sure to leave this session with some new Excel skills.
10:50 – 11:10 a.m. Networking Break 11:10 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS So, What’s the FASB up to Now? Joann Noe Cross, Ph.D., CPA, CMA, CGFM, CGMA, Professor, UW-Oshkosh This session will focus on significant “big ticket” items that may need to be implemented within the next year or two. These include revenue recognition, leases and consolidated entities. Along the way, we will talk about the structure of financial reporting in this country focusing on how the FASB, the SEC and the PCAOB link and interact.
Life After the Cyberattack or Embezzlement: What to Expect When Working With Law Enforcement Daniel J. Vaccaro, J.D., Chair, Legislation Practice Group, Michael Best & Friedrich, LLP Denise Greathouse, J.D., Attorney, Michael Best & Friedrich, LLP Increasingly, businesses have been victimized by external hackers or an internal “bad apple.” In this session, presented by two former prosecutors, you will be provided with an overview of issues to consider when such unfortunate events occur, including: D o we have a duty to contact law enforcement? What are the pros and cons of working with law enforcement? How can insurance help? How will it affect civil litigation?
File Sharing via the Cloud John H. Higgins, CPA, CITP, Strategic Technology Advisor, CPA Crossings, LLC One of the greatest features of the cloud is the ability to leverage it for collaboration. This session will feature a clear and concise review of how you can use the cloud to collaborate with internal and external users in your organization by sharing access to download and/or edit files. We will review some of the top selling cloud storage solutions, including Microsoft OneDrive, Box, DropBox and Google Drive. You will have a solid understanding of how to leverage this technology after attending this session.
12:10 – 1 p.m. Networking Lunch 1 – 2 p.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS While You Were Out: Recent Developments in Employment Law Bret McKitrick, J.D., Vice President, HR Consultant, Associated Financial Group, LLC Not only are laws impacting the workplace constantly changing, but trends in the courtroom and major enforcement initiatives launched by regulatory agencies can create new compliance concerns under pre-existing laws. Yet despite this state of flux, employers are required to be in full compliance almost as soon as the new laws or trends come into being. Fortunately, attending this session will give you the information you need to understand the recent developments that may profoundly impact your organization.
Retirement Plan Fees: Are You Getting the Best Deal? Greg Garvan, AIF, Senior Plan Consultant, Strategic Retirement Partners Jeff Cullen, AIF, MBA, Managing Partner, Strategic Retirement Partners We will discuss why you and your clients should care about 401(k) plan fees by covering the fiduciary responsibilities associated with understanding and monitoring plan fees, reviewing the new disclosure regulations that went into place last year and go over some recent fee litigation cases that resulted in rulings against plan sponsors. We will walk you through a process that will help you gain a better understanding of all the components that go into determining the cost of a plan, and the flexibility it provides a plan sponsor to structure payment for the costs of these services. We will help answer the question of how to determine what is “reasonable” when it comes to cost by outlining the process the DOL has established to help protect a plan sponsor’s fiduciary exposure. Finally, we’ll set out the process for conducting a Fee and Investment Benchmarking and finish up by taking you through a sample case study.
Structuring Workbooks Daniel Petersen, Director of Business Intelligence, Applied Tech Microsoft’s addition of PowerBI and true business intelligence capabilities in Excel 2013 has changed the game for on-demand, self-service analytics. Dashboards, PivotTables, Slicers, PowerView and PowerMaps have added the ability to create interactive reporting solutions without the need for complex formulas and coding. Before you can take advantage of these tools, however, it’s important that workbook data is structured properly, external data connections are defined and relationships between the different data sets are drawn out properly. This session will cover formatting Excel data into tables, using PowerPivot to connect to external data, transforming data using PowerQuery and presenting the data in a format that’s easy for end-users to understand and work with.
Workflow & Document Management: Practical Tools & Techniques John H. Higgins, CPA, CITP, Strategic Technology Advisor, CPA Crossings, LLC Workflow automation is one of today’s hottest technology trends. The central idea is to digitize your transaction data and then use software to automate the business process. Attend this session to learn how to put these highly productive tools to work in your organization and discover the fundamentals of document management systems and workflow software. You’ll also see how you can integrate them into your processes and find out how Microsoft SharePoint can increase your efficiency.
2 – 2:20 p.m.
What’s Coming Next in Office 365?
Networking Break
Daniel Petersen, Director of Business Intelligence, Applied Tech
2:20 – 3:20 p.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS Background Checks: Pros & Cons of Doing Something (or Nothing) Jason Kunschke, J.D., Attorney, Michael Best & Friedrich LLP Many employers conduct background checks— including checks on criminal records and credit history—on applicants and current employees when making hiring, promotion or retention decisions. Along with ensuring job qualifications, the use of background checks can help protect an employer against liability for negligent hiring, supervision or retention. However, background check policies, practices and procedures may also expose an employer to liability. This can happen if the use of the background check results in a disparate impact upon identifiable groups of applicants or employees or if the employer fails to comply with the technical requirements of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). This session will explore: The current status of the law regarding negligent hiring and supervision, background checks and liability based upon disparate impact upon particular groups T he Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s stated interest in heightened enforcement in this area
Be first to learn what’s next for Office 365! As you may already know, Microsoft is continually coming out with new features in Office 365 that are designed to improve the usability, flow and functionality. In this session, we will cover what’s expected in the near future. We will explore everything from SharePoint, OneNote, Skype and Exchange.
Lessons Learned From Recent Acquisitions Peter Floyrance, CPA, Director of Finance, Shiloh Industries, Inc. Moats, J.D., Senior Counsel, Foley & Lardner LLP Moderator: Brenen Sieber, CPA, Partner and Managing Director, Baker Tilly Capital, LLC Is your company looking at a potential acquisition?
