Story of Shanghai

Industry Layout of Shanghai

In 1990s, a large amount of industry distrcts sprouted up around inner ring of Shanghai. Twenty years have passed , now the metropolita n Shanghai undergoing a new round of regeneration. These were-industry-areas which near to the center of city are half-abandoned, waiting for chances to be reconstructed.

Industry area have been move from nowadays center area to suburb, with that process, abandoned area would be used to housing, with the vanish of railways.

02

Urban Agriculture on the bare gournd nearby recidence and illegal huts, people grow vegetations. They treat this form of agriculture as a significant part of their life, which feed back them in recreation in spirit and harvest in crops.

About the Site

SHIBEI’s Story

Various usage of land conpress in this around 5 ha wedge shape site, which surrounded by residential and industry aeras. Inner the site situation is chaotic. Two railways and blocked roads divde the site into cracked pieces.

SHIBEI was one of industry cores of Shanghai, which mainly in cable and textile. With the development of Shanghai, factories gradually moved far away from center area. SHIBEI district is gradually transform into residential area. What on the site now only is the remnant of construction, polluted land and semlly river. Thus, regeneration is inevitably took in to account to retrigger this area.

Natural Vegetation Area After being surrounded by barbed wire, this area triggered the ecological succession from the start point of abandoned bare area. Now what grow in this area almost all native planting. And, there is semi-natural ecosystem operating.

Recident

For serving nearby textile facotry, a school had been built to train and deliver workers to it. While what we have know only is the relic of half-devastated school building.

Soil Polluted Area

There are three old apartments and a number of illegal huts on site. People who live there, trouble by the circumstance settlement, desire to relocate in a better place.

To TA OP U

Between two railways was a paper factory, roughly ten years ago, the main building of the facotry have been pulled down. Now this triangular area is siege in barbed wire and occupied by confiscatory motorcycles. Contaminated chemically and materially make this area unavailable in vegetation. Thus, soil purification strategy should be put on the schedule. 03

Soil Improvement

What would happen in 20 years Planting rape to abosorb the soil polluted by alkali and heavy metal. Wetland raised by preservation of orignal vegetation and growing particular species with water purification ability. Ecological strategy are being used to deal with land and water.

After 10 years, some light-polluted area could be used for planting. Education center is built for people from community to know about the ecological strategy being used in park and learn the skill of horticulture and agriculture. Wetland grows bigger and bigger.

20 years of soil improvement process provides more avaliable lands. Glass houses are putted in flower field for recreation. Practice of horticulture in pollution free land. In wetland, an integrated and reliable water purify system is built. A resevior supply by purification of the water from river, to feed the need of landscape, agriculture and entertainment.

Polluted materials like alkalis and heavy metal elements are absorb from the root of vegetation. Then these enrichment materials are transported to recycle industry. Time pass by and the pollution situation become better. After this, land could be used for new founction like horticulutre.

For preservation of water resource, the design of park aim to supply its need on water by purification. Water is pumped from polluted river, flow through the wetland and go through the purification process of sedimentaion, aeration and plant absorption, eventually flow into the resevior. People could use the clear water from resevior for agriculture, horticulture and recreation activities. At the same time, the process show in wetland is a good teaching case for ecology education.

When they go into the Garden and follow the corridor, the zigzag and elevation change with steps provide them special space experience.

WATER BUILDING

NATURE Garden Scene Four elements, building, rockery, water and nature interact with each other in the surround of walls, form typical traditional chinese garden space.

Spatial Analysis The space of human and nature have the tendency to interact with each other. The zigzag corridor comebine with rockery, plants and windows give vistor various ways to see the landscape and more abundent space experience.

Drawbacks

Without design, the pedestrain routes seperate the empty into pieces. Noise and exhaust from avenue make the plaza uncomfortable for the user. Some people assmeble in certain area for a short time, then the group vanishes soon.

Master Plan

Different elevation of conrners form various spatial experience.

The strategy of design is dividing the plaza into two parts. To negotiate with city and the site’s location, deprive the space of pedestrian route from inner plaza. Elevates the corners to form different spactial expericen which aim to appeal citiens to the plaza and provide ‘incidents’ for people to meet and communicate with each other. At the same time, it blocks the drawbacks of main urban road. The object of design is to light the plaza, make it a friendly space to slow down people’s hectic life and let them enjoy the life of society.
