isdom is once again pleased to present our new and recent releases to you. We know our readers turn to us for different reasons—ranging from personal edification to scholarly research—and we feel our list of titles has gems in it for you regardless of what brings you to our catalog. This is a time of great change in the publishing industry, a dynamic era presenting every publisher with a host of challenges. Amid all this, Wisdom strives to offer the best selected and edited Buddhist works with the highest production values, whatever the medium of delivery. We’ve been successful thus far, and we owe this success to our authors and to you, our readers. At the end of this catalog you’ll find a list of Wisdom titles now available as digital editions through most major digital vendors. Let us know if there are additional titles you’re particularly eager to see. And on a different note, with sadness we consider the anniversary of the passing of our friends, Geshe Tsulga and E. Gene Smith. Gene spent a handful of invaluable years with Wisdom helping to develop our editorial capacity. We benefited immensely from his vast knowledge and network of scholars and others who would come to visit Gene as if on pilgrimage. It is inspiring to see the flourishing of Gene’s legacy organization, the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center (tbrc.org). Started while he was at Wisdom, TBRC continues to fulfill its critical mission of preserving, cataloging, and disseminating original Tibetan texts online. All of us at Wisdom feel much gratitude for Gene’s life and legacy, as well as for that of Geshe Tsulga and Ribur Rinpoche (seen here during a visit in 2000).
Ribur Rinpoche, Geshe Tsulga, Tim McNeill, Gene Smith, David Kittelstrom

Cover The Könchok Chidü Treasury This nineteenth-century painting depicts a visualization from a practice discovered by the great treasure finder Yatsön Nyingpo (1585–1656). Könchok Chidü means “Embodiment of All the Jewels of Refuge,” referring here to Padmasambhava, the central figure in this anthology of practices and their ostensible author. The “jewels” are not just the outer refuge of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha but also the inner refuge—guru, deity, and dakini—and the secret refuge of the body’s subtle channels, winds, and drops. All nine are united in the form of the Guru Padmasambhava at the center of this thangka. Above him sits Yatsön Nyingpo, while the wrathful Guru Drakpo appears on the lower left with the blue Lion-Faced Dakini opposite. The Könchok Chidü gained enormous popularity not only in the Nyingma school but also among Kagyüpas and is still practiced today.

Z TIBETAN ART CALENDAR 2012
MAKES A GREAT AND TREASURED GIFT! May Kubera, the Lord of Horses This sixteenth-century thangka may have been a gift from the Ming dynasty imperial court to a visiting Tibetan dignitary. In the center, the deep blue Kubera, dressed in heavy armor, gallops with sword drawn on a white horse bedecked with a precious bridle and saddle. He grasps a mongoose, a symbol of wealth, and is surrounded by a retinue of mounted warriors as they are stormed by a band of demons. This thangka likely formed part of a series depicting the followers of Vaishravana, the god of wealth, similar to a set that hangs in Beijing’s Forbidden City. Musée Guimet, Paris
October Buddha Shakyamuni and the Miracles of Shravasti When he was fifty-six years old, the Buddha was challenged to a spiritual duel by six non-Buddhist teachers. The story of how he defeated them over the course of fifteen days is one of the most popular subjects of Buddhist narrative art. This eighteenth-century thangka shows the miracle of the tenth day, when the guardians of the four directions presented offerings to the Buddha and light from the Buddha body’s radiated to the highest peak of existence. December Vajradhara and the Lamdré Lineage
Private collection
1-800-272-4050
The Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism is renowned for its esoteric system of meditation called the Lamdré, the “path and its fruit,” and this ancient painting depicts its lineage of transmission. The Buddha in his tantric manifestation as the blue Vajradhara sits at the center, with green Vajragarbha to his right and blue Nairatmya to his left. Above Vajragarbha stands Hevajra in tantric union, and Buddha Shakyamuni sits opposite. The figures along the border progress from the Indian adepts such as Virupa, through the founders of the Sakya lineage, on up to the abbots of Ngor Monastery in the fifteenth century, when the painting was likely created.

Z PRINCIPLES OF BUDDHIST TANTRA Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoché Translated by Ian Coghlan and Voula Zarpani “Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoché was like the Kadam masters of the past in his profound renunciation. He showed not the slightest worldly activity, not a single one of the eight mundane concerns, and he had no selfcherishing thought. Everything he did, even talking, was utterly pleasing to the minds of sentient beings.” —Lama Zopa Rinpoché 9780861712977 | 496 pages | $24.95 eBook 9780861716883
Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoché (1926–2006) was a renowned teacher of Tibetan Buddhism with students worldwide. Originally delivered as a series on “Tantric Grounds and Paths” to a group of Western students in California, these teachings comment on a classic introduction to tantra by the nineteenth-century Mongolian lama Chöjé Ngawang Palden. The work, Illumination of the Tantric Tradition, is a staple even today of the curriculum for training young monastics.
