About this match programme
By Richard Snowball After achieving promotion the previous season from the newly formed Division Four, York played some well known teams in Division Three, notably Southampton who finished up winning the League and Norwich City who were second. They also met Bournemouth, Q.P.R., Reading and Coventry City. This programme for the match against Accrington Stanley was notable because John Edgar, a forward signed from Gillingham, scored the fastest hat-trick in York's history in just six minutes in City's 3-0 victory. The season did not end well though as they finished fourth from bottom of the League and were relegated back to Division Four. Another achievement in this season was the installation of floodlights at Bootham Crescent. The first match played under them was against Q.P.R. on 7th September, 1959, with York winning the game 2-1 in front of a crowd of 10,593. A special match to officially open the floodlights was played on the 28th October, 1959 against Newcastle United with a star studded side running out 8-2 winners.
