About this match programme

By Richard Snowball This programme from York City's second season in Football League Third Division (North) is a dual one from Easter 1931 for the League match against Accrington Stanley and the reserve team game against Huddersfield Town the following day. City won the League game 3-1 in front of a crowd of 4,933 and finished the season a month later in a mid table position with 42 points from 42 games scoring 85 goals and conceding 82. This aggregate of 167 goals in a season remains a Football League record for York City. In the F.A. Cup they reached the 3rd Round for the second season running drawing 1-1 with Sheffield Utd in front of 31,821 and losing the replay 2-0, attracting an all- time attendance and receipts record for Fulfordgate of 12,721 (£1,059). Jimmy Cowie, who had scored a remarkable 56 goals in 56 games in York's last season in the Midland League, played his last match for the club after scoring 5 goals in 3 matches in February 1931. Young Reg Stockill, who in the previous season scored York City's first ever Football League goal at Wigan Borough aged only 15 years 281 days, left the club after strangely only ever playing three League games. He went to Scarborough before signing two months later for Arsenal. The previous season, their first in the Football League, they finished in a very creditable 6th position and reached the 3rd Round of the F.A. Cup, losing in a replay at Fulfordgate, watched by 12,583, to First Division Newcastle Utd. 2-1 after drawing 1-1 at St. James Park in front of 38,674 spectators. This was York's first match against First Division opposition.
