York City’s match at Barrow was played on September 30, 1963, and finished in a 2-1 win for York -- their third win in a row. This followed at bad start to the season as they had only managed two draws in the first seven matches.

They never really recovered from this and ended the season third from the bottom of Division Four and had to apply for re-election.

Because of their popularity with other clubs, due mainly to their F.A. Cup exploits over the years, they achieved re-election with the maximum 48 votes.

Due to the poor form on the pitch, the average crowd dropped to 3,937 and the attendance of 1,653 on December 21, 1963, was the then-lowest for Bootham Crescent.

At the start of the season, City had signed former Republic of Ireland international Noel Peyton from Leeds United and he made 38 League and Cup appearances scoring 5 goals. The following season he only played 2 games before leaving the club.

Another downside of this bad season was the involvement of their former captain Jackie Fountain who was found guilty and sent to prison for his part in the bribery match fixing scandal that marred the Football League.
